PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Over the past six months, I have been communicating to you updates regarding the Club’s Strategic Plan and where we are on our initiatives. This month I will focus on the progress we have been making on the new outdoor racquet courts, as well as, the Pavilion at the docks as part of Goal II: To ensure ICYCC has first-class, exciting facilities and amenities that enhance the quality of member experience.

First, we want to celebrate our membership being over 600 memberships for the first time in over twenty years! You, our Club members, make this happen and should be very pleased with this situation. As the Strategic Plan lays out, we need to keep our campus thriving to continue to attract new members for the sustainability of our Club.

During fiscal year 2023, which ended 3-31-23, the Club focused on capital investments in our current assets.

Examples of recent capital investments: ·~$400,000 in Green & Grounds for new equipment including a new well and pump for the irrigation system. ·$500,000 on a new HVAC system for our Clubhouse. ·$65,000 for renovation of the Men’s Locker and Rest Room and ·$36,000 for repairing the walls at Holland’s Hole.

We also began the process of prioritizing asset investment using the results of our Capital Assets Reserve Study.

During that time, we sought vendors and bids for the Outdoor Racquet as well as the Pavilion projects. These are the next pieces of the Facility Master Plan. It is important that we do not try to segregate any project into a narrow silo, but view each project as part of the larger vision for our campus. For example, we cannot expand our golf range and practice area until we move the Outdoor courts. This domino effect is further evident when the details of each plan are reviewed. For example, the earth movement that would have to happen for new courts would facilitate the range expansion and maximize investment dollars by moving earth from empty lots into where it would be needed later for the range. The board is working hard to be efficient and fiscally responsible for the long-term development of the campus.

A group of dedicated Board members and project champions have been meeting weekly to keep the emphasis on these two projects. Bids have been received for the Pavilion and the Board is interested in keeping the budget for this project at ~$200,000. This budget has required a give-and-take between a full wish list of specifications balanced by fiscal constraints. We are honing the meeting of these two conditions to provide a wonderful, larger space that takes advantage of the beautiful water view without creating another restaurant area that would necessitate restrooms and parking requirements be met.

The Pavilion is a popular screened area used most of the year and we look to enhance that experience.

Bids have been received on the Outdoor Racquet Courts for ~$750,000. These are very specific to court composition and size and fencing requirements. We would also need to clear the area to create the necessary foundation. At this point we are looking at ~$900,000 for this project. Like the Pavilion projects, the budgetary constraints narrowed the scope of the project for the original wish list.

Let me be very clear, the Board has not approved any project to date. The Club has a detailed process for analyzing bids, building a business case and formulating a return on investment. The Planning Committee and the Finance Committee review all aspects of these proposals prior to the Board receiving them. We are planning for the two committees to receive the proposals over the next few weeks. We want to be as transparent as possible with our membership so I have conveyed this information to you within weeks of getting it. Please contact me with any comments or concerns. At the Member Meeting in April, I received input and I continue to request it from you. Once a decision is made regarding these projects, we will turn our focus to the pool complex project.

Finally, as we work with the Strategic vision, we keep an eye on Business Continuity Planning, and managing risk areas with the help of the newly created Risk Management Committee. This is good business practice. The cornerstone of our campus is our beloved Clubhouse. As owners, we need to be realistic about a few facts, we have no fire suppression system, we have no elevator to the second floor, we have no additional space for administrative staff, etc. What we do have is uncertainty about the next lightning strike or hurricane that could put our Clubhouse at risk. This is just reality. For Business Continuity planning, I have asked the group of Past Presidents to think about the What If’s. They will develop scenarios hopefully that we will never need, however, we will be glad to have should a crisis arise. I hope knowing this oversight is happening will give all members a sense that your Board is looking out for your investment in our Club.

The Board and membership are saddened by the passing of ICYCC board member and green chairman, Gil Zimmerman.

SOMETIMES IT IS ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW!

By Megan Stephens, Membership Director Everyone knows the age-old saying "It's not about what you know, but who you know" and it's this time of year that phrase rings especially true. It's the time we should be thinking about those people who are not members that might benefit from joining. They may need your encouragement and "insider knowledge" of all of the great things happening around the club.

Sharing is giving a warm welcome to a new neighbor, striking up a conversation with a fellow church pew pal, waving and welcoming a new face at Tri-Star or simply sharing your story as you enjoy cocktail hour on the back porch of a friend's house - these (and many others) are all opportunities to share club life with friends. There have been many people along the way who have referenced being flattered by an invite to join the club!

Entertaining? Members do not have to feel like it's a burden to bring prospective members to try out the Club - we pick up their meal tab and if you can't be with them, we will treat them well in your absence. We simply ask that you make a note in the comment box of your reservation with their name and we'll take it from there.

We not only treat a prospective member's meal, but we'd love to arrange a round of golf or one of our racquet sports for your friend/family to allow them the full ICYCC experience. Everyone should feel good about their investment in club life!

As many know, the club is also largely dependent on the real estate market. If you were at the club this past month, you may have noticed an appreciation gathering for our real estate community. The Club and local realtors have a great relationship and we invited them out for a lunch to thank them for all they do to continue to help the club grow. This was a wonderful turnout and we can't wait to do it again next year. If you happen to see or hear of a realtor selling in your area and they need a "hook" to help sell life at the river encourage them to bring their clients to the club for lunch, we can help! The ICYCC family is welcoming and special and it might be just what they need to comfort someone on the fence.

Lastly, we want to thank the members who have stopped by our community booths at various off-site events over the past few months. We are grateful for the opportunity not only to create awareness of the club in the community but to support so many great charitable organizations.

Pool-Attended Hours Tuesdays - Sundays, 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. starting Saturday, May 27th Swimming outside of attended hours is done so at your own risk. Please be advised of any signage indicating treatment or maintenance when swimming outside of posted hours.

Food service is available during posted carryout hours. Please use your mobile app or the kiosk located at the pool to place your order. You may select "pool" as the delivery location when ordering.

Happy Campers Are Coming!

A few spaces remain for this summer's sports camp. Currently sailing camp is fully subscribed with over 60 young sailors headed out on the creek starting this month. Please wish them good luck and even give them a little wave from the shoreline!

If you are around the club campus this summer, please be mindful as you drive through the parking lot as little ones will be scurrying about.

Tournament/Clinic Schedule

The 2023 golf season at ICYCC is off to a great start, please keep an eye on the club calendar for upcoming golf tournament/golf clinic dates and signups!

Tuesday Afternoon Golf Clinics 2:15-3:15 pm Designed for those that have little or no golf experience. Our goal is to help you through the fundamentals of golf – grip, aim, stance, ball placement. We will explain the different clubs and stress the importance of practice.

5-week Sessions May 23 (Iron Play) May 30 (Driving) June 6 (Chipping, Pitching, Bunker) June 20 (Putting) June 27 (Decision Making On Course $25 per Clinic Beginning Golf Clinics 2:00-3:00 pm or 3:15-4:15 pm Designed for those that have little or no golf experience. TOURNAMENTS President’s Cup

PACE OF PLAY Pace of Play is an important aspect of the game and can make the difference between an enjoyable round and an unpleasant round.

Ideally a round for four players at our club is no more than 4 hours. Please keep this in mind as you play your round. It is important for you to know where you are in the field. Are you keeping up with the group in front of you? Is there a gap of a hole or more between you and the group ahead of you? Where is the group behind you? Are they waiting for you to move forward before they can hit?

Pace of Play is an issue at times during regular play and in some of our events and tournaments. One slow group holds up the entire field behind them. Therefore, we ask that you please keep pace and please be aware of when you need to pick up your pace and move on. During regular play, please allow faster groups to play through.

It is also important for you to know that members, who are held up, do call the Pro Shop and ask for an employee to come out and speak with the group holding up the field. If you are approached by an employee of the Pro Shop who asks your group to pick up the pace, please cooperate and do so immediately.

Let’s all be mindful of the experience all members of our club should have on our beautiful course.

Turf Talk By Pete Stephens, CGCS Happy June! The ICYCC course and grounds are improving every day as the weather progressively becomes more summer like. As you walk around campus you will notice all the flower beds neatly edged and clean with new mulch.

Many beds have newly planted annuals for Spring, Summer, and early fall colors as well as our native plant beds rich with color and relatively low maintenance.

On the course, we have expanded the use of an "N model" concept, which focuses primarily on temperatures and growing degree days as it relates to fertilizer applications. The cooler the temperature, the less nitrogen the plant can take up, so by using a program centered around the weather, we are able to apply nitrogen when the plant can more successfully use it. We have been using this model for just under three years on the greens, and the turf's health has steadily improved. This year the program was expanded to tees and fairways (see above). I have to admit, it isn't natural for superintendents to throw out more traditional calendar planning, but better use of technology and good old mother nature has proven to be better for the turf and in turn for the environment. I look forward to sharing the results as this program expands.

In addition to turf maintenance, the crew added cross-over boards to the bridges on holes #15 and #18 to help preserve the longevity of the bridges and we are getting ready to make improvements by adding Zoysia sod behind holes #7 and #8, attend to landscape beds on #16 and #15 and continue with tree maintenance.

The Course and Grounds team would like to express our gratitude to you, we are eager for this upcoming golf and grounds season and will continue to provide our members and guests with outstanding playing conditions along with aesthetic preference. We would also like to take this time and give thanks to Beth Kendrick and all the volunteers who have helped beautify the course and grounds over many seasons, without your help and support to make ICYCC special and beautiful this wouldn’t be possible.

COMMODORE'S CORNER

So, you’re a member of the Yacht Club. So, what does $40 buy nowadays? First and foremost -some terrific educational programs. We’ve run programs on outboard engines, the weather, the ICW (Intercoastal Waterway), Virginia Boating Safety, and close quarter piloting. I hope you were able to join us for some or all.

Next – FUN! We had a terrific start with our annual Spring Fling.I’m writing this aboard Bay Window awaiting the Flag Raising ceremony which traditionally launches the boating season. This year we have 90 members signed up to witness the time-honored tradition of bag pipes, cannon fires, and the raising of the Colors. Following today’s festivities , we’ll be hosting long distance cruises, creek raft-ups, an incredible land cruise to the Finger Lakes to watch the changing of the foliage in the fall, the Progressive Dinner, and other shorter events. Keep your eye on the Club’s calendar and sign up for as many as you can.

Beyond the events hosted by the Yacht Club, another terrific perk of membership is that you have access to literally hundreds of yacht clubs throughout the U.S. We have reciprocal relationships with 16 clubs on the Chesapeake.These clubs are listed on page 5 of the Yacht Club Handbook, located on the Yacht Club page of ICYCC’s website (members section). Reciprocity means that you will be treated like a “member” when visiting these clubs.You can reserve dockage, make meal reservations, enjoy golf (for those that have a course) or lounge in the pool.And the best part is you don’t need a boat to enjoy these privileges – you simply need to be a member of the Indian Creek Yacht Club. So when traveling around the Chesapeake, whether by boat or by car, take advantage of this amazing perk. Be aware that some of these clubs will want an introduction letter stating your “good standing” with us. This is easily secured from either Club Manager Brian Darlak or Membership Director Megan Stephens. And when you’re traveling farther away, you can visit any of the clubs listed in the Yachting Club of America registry. ICYC is a member, so you can log onto YCA’s website, see the clubs in the area you’re visiting, and schedule a visit for dinner, drinks, use of their facilities, etc. Again, details on how to do this are listed on page 5 of the handbook.

From our wonderful events to access to literally hundreds of amazing clubs throughout America -- $40 may be the best investment you’ve ever made!

Spring Fling Fun!

FLAG RAISING IN REWIND

The Indian Creek Yacht Club celebrated its 60th annual Flag Raising and Blessing of the Fleet on Friday, May 19th, 2023 at 1700 Hours (5:00 p.m.) at its waterfront Marina. A procession of the Bridge and Past Commodores from the Clubhouse to the waterfront was led by the Kilmarnock and District Pipe Band.

Bugler Ben Green sounded the assembly, and Commodore Brian Clarke introduced the 2023 Bridge; in addition to himself, the 2023 Bridge includes: Randy Graham, Vice Commodore and Fleet Chaplain Bob Young, Rear Commodore Steve Bowen, Fleet Captain Kathryn Wainscott, Secretary Paul Bland, Treasurer John Coyle, Port Captain Past Commodores in attendance included Terry Greene, Commodore from 1996, who is the first Centenarian Past Commodore of the Yacht Club. Other past Commodores in attendance were: Len Hoerneman Joe Sarnowski Wally Dawson Len Engstrom Bill Throckmorton Steve Lowe Jean Light Tony Ennis Bob Wayland George Fentress Following Commodore Clark’s remarks, he called for Vice Commodore Graham, Rear Commodore Young, and Fleet Captain Bowen to hoist the Colors as Bugler Green sounded To the Colors and played the National Anthem.

Vice Commodore and Fleet Chaplain Graham then led the Blessing of both the Yacht Club Fleet and the Junior Sailing Fleet. Following the Blessing, Treasurer Bland fired the cannon, and announced with gusto that the Indian Creek 2023 cruising season was officially open.
