New Year, New Opportunities!

Welcome Back Sandra Hargett Brenda Burkeholder

A new year brings with it opportunity for both new ways to enjoy the Club and a time to think of new ways we can live our brand. There have been countless memories made around the club over the years and that is us living our "where lifelong friendships begin" tagline. In 2023, let's make it our resolution to continue with this tradition and perhaps even expand our reach further. Whether it's a warm welcome to a newer member, a friendly hello to a more tenured member or an extension of an empathetic embrace in a time in need - we are here for each other in so many ways and that is just one of the things that makes our ICYCC family so special.

Over the coming months, you will be hearing how you can become more involved at the the club, learning what some of our survey takeaways were, hearing of ways to share the club with prospective members, and how to share feedback both inside and outside of the club walls

Welcome 2023 - it's going to be a great year!

TurfTalk News From On the Course

It will not be a surprise for many, but this is the time of year that I would like to remind everyone of the importance of obeying the cart ruling. Always check with the Pro Shop to find out what the ruling of the day is before going out on the course and take note of cart directional signs as you are playing. Any ruts or tire tracks made on the dormant bermudagrass will be something we will all look at for the rest of the winter, as it won’t heal until the growing season returns in May.

There are a lot of “fun facts” about what it takes to maintain a golf course, if you are looking for some winter reading, please visit the USGA website usga.org, then navigate to Advancing and click on course care to the left.

The weather continues to be great, although a little wet and chilly at times. After many months of low pond levels, our ponds are finally full and the golf course turf continues to be in good shape, setting us up for a great season next year.

The staff is busy with general course and grounds maintenance including course clean up, tree work, landscaping and winterization of irrigation systems throughout campus. This is also the time of year we prepare the 2024 Operation and Capital budget, review our Best Management Practices and Integrated Pest Management programs to coincide with the budget. All of the items being addressed over the winter are focused on bettering the course and grounds from a very successful 2023 season.

We would would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year and would like to express our gratitude for your generous gifts and support this past year.

3 ways to improve your golf game

off-season

With the winter season upon us, not everyone has the ability or desire to get outside to practice and play. And while this break may not be your first choice, there are still things you can do to improve in the off-season. Making changes in the middle of golf season can be difficult as often they are uncomfortable and can lead to some unpredictable misses. For example, if you normally slice your golf ball and you improve your grip this will likely be uncomfortable, and as you adjust you may start hitting pulls and hooks. Your instructor will likely love this because it means you’re on the right track, but for you, it is such a different miss it could be alarming So, look at the offseason as a positive. Use this time off to make some of the biggest changes so you come back ready when golf season rolls around again.

1. Improve your grip

Boring? Maybe. But it’s important. Your grip will determine not only what your clubface looks like at impact but holding your club properly in your fingers will allow you to have security without tension, which allows for speed and power. Every golfer is built differently and there is no one way to grip the club, but allowing your lead arm to relax and hang to see what position your hand naturally falls is important to knowing what your grip should look like. It also must match your hip speed and desired ball flight Stop by the golf shop and I will show you how to hold the club and find a grip that works for you.

2. Perfect your posture in the mirro

Perfect posture will put you in an athletic position to start your swing and help make it easier to consistently make contact with the golf ball. Your posture should be the same from club-to-club, bending forward from your hips so that your chest is over your toes so that your hands can hang directly below your shoulders.

All are welcome to play!

9-Hole Ladies Winter Golf Competition

November 2022 thru March 31, 2023

Entry Fee - $5 Front Nine/$5 Back Nine paid

in Pro Shop

Your posture is one of the best things you can work on in the off-season. Practice in a mirror and see what it looks like when your are balanced forward and your hands truly hang. Ask yourself: Where is your weight? How far are you from your hands to your thighs when your arms hang? Where does your glove hand line up relative to your laces on your shoes?

We all define what we see when we are set up perfectly for us, and if you can find a way to define this over time, it will be a lot easier to replicate from club to club and be a ton more consistent with contact.

3. Get flexible

When a student arrives for a golf lesson, I have to work with what they have as far as strength and flexibility. Improving flexibility takes a bit of time and effort which makes it a great thing to work on in the off-season Flexibility allows for a better range of motion as well as your ability to turn athletically.Another important part of necessary flexibility for golf is that your hamstrings are flexible enough to allow you to get into good posture. Just simply bending from your hips and allowing your arms to hang toward the floor can help to loosen your hamstrings which allows you to to bend properly from your hips and get into an athletic golf posture.

See you on the course!

TOURNAMENT RESULTS ARE IN!

Men’s Doubles Champion:

1 Bob Gillispie and Jeff Duffy 30 points

2.Mark Allen and Norm Faulkner 21 points

3.Stewart Hargrove and Doug Cash 19 points

4.Bill Elliot and Mike Antonio 17 points

Bob Gillispie and Jeff Duffy won the ICYCC Doubles Event by winning big in their first two matches 10-1 and 10-1. The last match they played was against Stewart Hargrove and Doug Cash and were tied at 8-all and won the last two games to clinch the championship 10-8, they accumulated 30 points. Three years in a row Bob and Jeff have won the men’s doubles championship. Great job guys!

The men’s doubles tournament showcased some new players. Mike Antonio, who has just got back into the game after a few years off, really showed some great shot making and super athletic ability running shots down Doug Cash who hasn’t played competitive tennis in 20 or more years, really impressed me. Doug’s technique was very nice, you could tell Doug had been trained by a good technical pro, and his strokes were a thing of beauty.

Mark Allen and Norm Faulkner made for an interesting team. Mark and Norm are true counter punchers with the ability to attack when you least expect it. Mark and Norm battle you for each point you must play an extra ball or two with these too

Bill Elliot and Mike Antonio played well together; Bill Elliot was a lastminute replacement for Rob Hodder who injured his arm. Bill’s slice backhand return is a true weapon, and his volley game is just so good. Mike Antonio plays a couple of styles of tennis, chip and charge and rip and go. Mike is always coming forward. They both have a great volley game and are very tough at the net.

Bob Gillispie and Jeff Duffy just dominated the first two matches, they’re like a dance team, they move well together and have a great feel for what the other person is doing Jeff Duffy’s return from the Ad court is very strong, Jeff punishes returns with his backhand and Bob Gillispie puts it away at the net. Bob Gillispie’s return from the deuce court is accurate and puts opponents on the defense right away, with Jeff Duffy’s athleticism at the net, it’s TOUGH! They have a real advantage especially returning. They both serve well and just make a great doubles team! That’s why they are now the Three Peat Champions.

Mixed Doubles Champion:

Stewart Hargrove and Ruth Simpson 24 points

Rob Hodder and Linda Fothe 19 points

Norm Faulkner and Gail Kenna 12 points

Trip Bugg and Adrianne Bugg 2 points

Stewart Hargrove and Ruth Simpson won the ICYCC Mixed Doubles Event by winning all three matches and accumulating 24 points.

Tripp Bugg and Adrianne Bugg player their first ever tennis tournament, takes allot of courage to step into the fire. The two of them have been playing tennis for about 6 months and growing their game. It’s nice to see them play and hope they continue to grow their game.

Norm Faulkner and Gail Kenna played well together, both hit a great ball and play solid doubles. Norm and Gail played a tough match against Linda Fothe and Rob Hodder, most of the games went to deuce, but Linda and Rob won that match 8-4.

Linda Fothe and Rob Hodder teamed up for the first time, and played extremely well together, they lost a close match to the eventual champions 8-3, Stewart Hargrove and Ruth Simpson.

Ruth Simpson and Stewart Hargrove playing for the second year in a row, showed up this weekend. They both played well, with Stewart crushing returns and Ruth putting volleys away. A great one two punch.

The Ladies' Doubles Championship will be played in January, due to illness and holidays. We expect to have a good draw!
