President’s Message
BY BARBARA FENTRESS
Welcome to Spring! This is the time of year that our Club kicks into high gear with the activity areas – Sock Burning to start the boating season, golf organized play beginning, and outdoor racquet courts getting maintenance for play. I want to bring to your attention two Board updates.
FABULOUS PAVILION
Visit the new Pavilion at the docks! Both the pavilion and the docks are Club-wide amenities available for all members to enjoy. The planning & construction of the pavilion each came in under their budgets of $23,800 and $216,780 respectively with actuals of + $12,975 and $207,963 Thank you to the Blue Heron society donors who contributed to this construction We are using the Sock Burning as a soft opening before a Grand Opening later in the Spring. This building is used by dinner clubs, book clubs, golf groups, Bible study groups, private parties, ICYC, visiting yacht clubs and other special events throughout the year. An ad hoc committee headed by Mary Kay Rotert, Tony Ennis, and Kim Pate championed the project over a number of years with considerable input from the House, Planning & Finance Committees. Golf, Green & Grounds, Racquet and Food & Beverage were all consulted throughout the planning process for size and location. Thank you to the many club members for making this a success. You can reserve the Pavilion for use by contacting Jennifer Mason. Look for the Grand Opening announcement. (See photos below)
OPINIONS APLENTY
The Board and committees value the input of our fellow members, hence we do many surveys. We hear YOU! As you can imagine, feedback always covers the many sides of an issue so we try to ferret out the majority views. Thank you to the numerous members who read the By-law change recommendations. Governance revised their recommendations based on received feedback. Food & Beverage shares every specific comment made from meals with the staff and committee. Golf heard the priorities reflected in the large survey a few months ago. Racquet is developing its survey and is due to send that out soon.
The feedback we hear is considered with each major decision the Board makes. It is our job to ensure the long-term viability of our Club and to do that we need everyone’s involvement Thank you for your continued input

If you live in Weems and you have not seen an invite come through by email, please let me know and we will be sure to get you on the Weems VIP list! Next up is White Stone, so if you live in White Stone, watch your email over the next two weeks for your chance to connect to club member neighbors!
This is an event for ICYCC members in various locations, but if you have an interested neighbor, please bring them along!

A Communicating Club
I recently had the opportunity to work in Indian Creek’s booth at the Richmond Boat Show. While there, a member of the Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club came up who was not a member of the Yacht Club. Upon hearing that, I grabbed a copy of the Yacht Club’s hot-off-the-press “Rock the Bay” Boating & Events Calendar for 2024. Flipping to the 2024 Events listing in the brochure, I was able to walk the member through the extensive list of Cruises (for both large & small boats), Educational Events, and Social Events which Yacht Club members gain access to for just $40 per year. As we finished, I had the feeling that the Yacht Club would soon be gaining a new member!
As I reflected on that, I realized how challen that the Yacht Club is doing on a continui and true means (such as this Commodore’s such as the Yacht Club’s venture into socia willingly agreed to head up an informal com and make sure we don’t miss any opportunit

GOLF NEWS CONTINUED
The new fiscal year is here and we are excited to announce that your monthly golf dues now include the monthly driving range, as well as, the handicap fee. If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact the golf shop.
We have launched an online page to show past events and upcoming events on our website To see these events please follow the steps below:
PRO TIP OF THE MONTH
When in the bunker most people with consitent contact. One way to work on that is through working on entry point in the sand.
Step 1: When practicing, draw a line 3 inches behind the ball
Step 2: Make a swing and see where you have entered in the sand. Most players enter too far behind the golf ball in the sand causing the club to decelerate or bounce into the golf ball!
Step 3: If you entered the sand too far behind the golf ball on swing one, try to hit the sand in front of the line to exaggerate. Adjusting weight distribution between the front and the back foot can assist in doing so. Putting more weight on your front foot can help you hit closer to the line. Make sure to continue to swing hard and through in a bunker. The club never touches the ball, its the sand that throws the ball out.
Starting in 2024, you will also see a member discount on apparel. Members will get a 10% on such apparel when purchasing in the pro shop. We have seen the arrival of the following apparel vendors to start the season, Sunice, Swannies, Adidias, SophieBella

Turf Talk

As this article is coming out, we are wrapping up the greens spring aerification and topdressing. Everything went according to plan and the weather was perfect for this procedure. The course dried out just in time for another successful VSGA tournament, the Junior Four-Ball Championship. We can begin to see the bermudagrass breaking dormancy throughout the whole course as spring is arriving and the trees are flowering and budding out. The team will be addressing the landscaping this month at the beautiful new waterfront pavilion.
The golf course and grounds team are excited to begin the season with new programs, the return of our part-time seasonal team members, plus the arrival of four new team members from Guatemala, and the team has been working together to make their time here welcoming and productive. This is an exciting venture for the Golf Course and Grounds department and the Club as it might open opportunities in other departments.
The golf survey during this past winter continues to guide our focus, as well as, the golf course budget. There have been questions about why can’t we just add sand to the bunkers to improve the playability of the bunker? This is a great question! The bunkers are a high priority for the golf course maintenance team. It is one of our goals to renovate a couple of test bunkers with new and different materials to see which one will be the best fit in the way of material, playability and cost for ICYCC. As bunkers age, they become contaminated with organic material from algae, grass clippings, tree debris and subsurface material such as silt and clay. These contaminants build a layer in the sand creating a seal that reduces and completely stops water infiltration. Many of our bunkers are getting to this stage, while some of our bunkers have a low level of sand and are contaminated with gravel from the subsurface drainage system. Adding sand to our bunkers might buy another year or maybe two, however the problem remains, the bunkers still will not drain, and the gravel will float to the top soon after the sand is added, wasting both money and time. The USGA will be here in June to evaluate the course, which includes bunker conditions, and we are looking forward to what they have to say.
The GC&G team is looking forward to another great season and to see you all out on the course and grounds.
