COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER AND HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT DR. MICHELLE R. WEISE
This year’s commencement speaker, Dr. Michelle Weise, is the author of Long-Life Learning: Preparing for Jobs that Don’t Even Exist Yet (Wiley, 2021). Her book was awarded the 2021 Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature by UPCEA (University Professional and Continuing Education Association), recognizing the author and publisher of an outstanding work of continuing higher education literature. Thinkers50 named her one of 30 management and leadership thinkers in the world to watch in 2021.
Dr. Weise (pronounced W-ice) leads Rise & Design, an advisory service tailored for organizations seeking to design education and workforce strategies that will prepare working-age adults for the jobs of today and tomorrow. In this consulting role, she has worked with Indiana Tech’s leadership, faculty and staff over the past two years, advising their work to develop strategies and tactics for the university to develop best-in-class student support services for students of all ages.
In the past, Dr. Weise has served as Vice Chancellor of Strategy and Innovation at National University System, and Senior Advisor at Imaginable Futures, a venture of The Omidyar Group. She was also the Chief Innovation Officer of Strada Education Network as well as of Southern New Hampshire University. With Clayton Christensen, she coauthored Hire Education: Mastery,
Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution (2014) while leading the higher education practice at Christensen’s Institute for Disruptive Innovation.
Her service work includes advising BrightHive, a data collaboration platform, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), the SkillUp Coalition, Basta, Hitch, Bayes Impact, Clayton Christensen Institute Social Capital R&D Project, and World Education’s Personal and Workplace Success Skills Library. She has also served as a commissioner for then-Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s Commission on Digital Innovation and Lifelong Learning, Harvard University’s Task Force on Skills and Employability, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education.
Dr. Weise’s commentaries on redesigning higher education and developing more innovative workforce and talent pipeline strategies have been featured in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Harvard Business Review and on PBS NewsHour.
Dr. Weise is a former Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Harvard and Stanford.

THE TRADITION OF ACADEMIC COMMENCEMENT
Graduate Degree Hoods
In antiquity, the first educational degrees were probably conferred at a general gathering of the student body. As early as 500 B.C., the medical school at Athens, Greece, for example, awarded inscribed lead plates at a formal degree-granting ceremony. Parchment diplomas eventually replaced lead plates, and graduates may have received degrees written on a sheepskin parchment as early as 848 A.D.
Master’s degrees and doctoral degrees were awarded by medieval European universities. The first recorded baccalaureate degree was given by the University of Paris in the 13th century. Originally, the degree was a license to teach.
In America, the colonists used the European universities as models for the schools which they founded, and European graduation traditions were adopted. The first American college was Harvard College, founded Oct. 28, 1636. The first Bachelor of Science degree was conferred by Wesleyan University (Connecticut) in 1838; the bachelor’s degree now is the standard American degree which signifies completion of a four-year degree program.
All degree candidates, college officials, faculty and dignitaries are attired in traditional medieval cap and gown. Black is the standard gown color; however, commencement participants are entitled to wear distinctive tassels on their caps or hoods of various colors over their gowns.
The colors allocated to the various fields of learning have been largely standardized in the United States by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, and accepted by the American Council on Education in its Academic Costume Code. The codified colors associated with Indiana Tech’s different academic disciplines are:

Honor Cords
Indiana Tech recognizes three levels of outstanding academic achievement by undergraduates when a degree is earned. The level of distinction is indicated on transcripts. These students are wearing gold honor cords.

Alpha Chi Honor Society
Region V, Indiana Lambda, Chapter 279
Alpha Chi is a national coeducational academic honor society for all disciplines. Since 1922 its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors and requires confirmation by faculty. The Indiana Tech chapter began in 1986 and holds an induction ceremony for new members each fall. Honorees wear medallions with sapphire and green ribbon.

Many nationally recognized honor societies and student organizations designate academic achievement with cords, stoles, and/or medallions. For example, many international graduates are wearing stoles that represent the colors of their nation’s flag.
