Welcome Dear Friends, Thank you for making the 33rd annual IPL Yuletide Celebration a part of your holiday season! I am delighted to welcome you into our home for our favorite festive traditions.

Whether this is your first time celebrating the holidays with us, or you’ve been attending Yuletide for decades, we are honored to share this experience with you today. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that music has always been my favorite part of the season. The classic recordings, the organ at my family’s church, gathering around the piano with loved ones . . . there is magic in all of the music of the holidays.

You’re in for a treat, as two of our favorite guest artists join your Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra: Angela Brown and Josh Kaufman. From Adelaide in Guys and Dolls at Crispus Attucks High School to the title role in Aida with the Metropolitan Opera and beyond, Indy’s hometown opera star has brought joy to millions around the world. Angela is a treasured member of the ISO family, and I always look forward to spending time with her at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Josh Kaufman represented Indianapolis when he won NBC’s The Voice in 2014, and has found many ways to share his incredible talent since then. He spent last Christmas at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre for his Home for the Holidays concert, and we are glad to bring him home to Indianapolis this season.

We always look forward to highlighting emerging young talent on our stage, and the amazing dancers of Expressenz wowed us on NBC’s World of Dance this summer—these young ladies are bringing a new energy to the Yuletide lineup! Our good friends from Troupe Vertigo—most recently highlighted in our stunning Cirque Goes to the Movies concerts—will astonish you once again with their strength and artistry.

Don’t forget to enjoy the holiday fun in our lobby during intermission. We have our favorite decorated cookies, hot wassail, and plenty of festive photo opportunities.

Music in My Life: Diane Evans, Harp Born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio, Diane Evans began her musical journey with the piano at the age of three. When she attended the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Mich., to study piano and art, she also signed up for a beginning harp class, having been fascinated by a harpist she’d seen on television. She fell in love with the instrument and began working with the Cleveland Orchestra’s renowned harpist, Alice Chalifoux. “I had a top-notch role model with whom I could personally interact and from whom I learned so much,” explains Evans.

“Being an orchestral harpist became my goal.” Participation in various summer music festivals—including Tanglewood—supplemented her studies at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she earned her degree in Harp Performance.

Before joining the ISO in 1981, Evans was a member of the Toledo and Omaha Symphonies. She has appeared many times as a soloist with the ISO, most recently in 2014. She has also been a soloist with the Indianapolis Philharmonic, the Springfield (Ill.) Symphony, and the Omaha Symphony, and several of her solo and chamber performances have been featured on television and radio. Evans also loves to teach music: “I feel privileged to have inspired and been inspired by many students of all ages and levels over the years.”

Who is your favorite composer and why? I cannot name a single favorite composer: I am fascinated by the spectrum of musical imagination. I enjoy thinking about the differences between various composers, relating to their cultural backgrounds and life circumstances.

Like anything else, greater knowledge about each composer leads to greater understanding.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not performing? I find that I’m most attracted to creative pursuits (thanks, Mom and Dad). I like to make art, I like to cook and garden, I enjoy my dance-based exercise classes, and my book groups and my movie group. I very much enjoy working with my wonderful, talented, and dedicated students.

What’s your favorite memory with the Symphony? There have been plenty of special performances at home and on tour, for all kinds of reasons. I’ve appeared many times as concerto soloist, which is exciting and challenging. On a different level, personal relationships with my colleagues have engendered priceless experiences and memories. When you work with the same people over the course of decades, there’s a cumulative sum that can hardly be described. Memorable tour experiences and social support during happy or tough times rival shared musical triumphs as high points over the course of my career.

Any advice for a young person considering a career in the orchestra? It isn’t easy to become an orchestral musician. The competition is fierce and to even hope for success, one must leave no stone unturned. Practice, practice, practice, but also take steps to educate yourself as broadly as possible. Learn about business, too.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know and wouldn’t expect?

I was a cheerleader in middle school. GO, SPARTANS!

The Scott Chamber players—comprising Sylvia and her husband Beverly Scott (viola), and husband-wife duo Perry Scott (cello), and Lisa Scott (violin)—played two movements of the Dvořák D Major Piano Quartet. The program also featured Butler professor pianist Kate Boyd performing a Prokofiev piano sonata.

These volunteers are responsible for providing outstanding customer service to Hilbert Circle Theatre and Kroger Symphony on the Prairie patrons. Read the experience first-hand from one of our dedicated ISO volunteers, Laura Nagle, who has contributed more than 230 hours with the ISO the past four years as a volunteer!

Tell us about yourself and your background.

I’m originally from New York State and have lived in Indianapolis since 2013. I’m a certified translator and language instructor.

In addition to English, I speak French, Spanish, and Irish, and I’ve spent a good deal of time in Europe. After teaching for 16 years, I recently ventured out on my own as a freelancer, focusing on my translation work.

What motivated you to become an ISO volunteer?

I joined the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir as soon as I moved to Indy, and my first ISC performance was Verdi’s Requiem with the ISO. It was immediately clear to me that these two organizations share a very special partnership. Over the last few years, I’ve been consistently impressed by the quality of the orchestra and by the enthusiasm and engagement of the ISO patrons.

Have you ever played an instrument?

I was fortunate to grow up in a community with a fantastic public school music program and I played violin and viola growing up. These days, I enjoy playing ukulele, but my voice is still my best instrument!

Who is your favorite composer?

Gabriel Fauré. When I was in college, my voice teacher imposed a one-year ban on Fauré; she said I was obsessing over the lyrics, getting emotional over the melodies, and ignoring my vocal technique. (She was absolutely right.)

What has been your favorite experience with the ISO so far?

It’s always a pleasure to hear that a patron is attending their first ISO performance. On one occasion, some young students attending their first classical concert asked for help following the program; they were wondering how to tell the difference between the movements of a symphony. We wound up conducting some imaginary music together in the lobby at intermission so that they’d know what to watch for in terms of tempo and meter. I’m sure we looked ridiculous, but it was fun!

Why is volunteering for the ISO important to you?

I believe that healthy arts organizations are an essential part of any thriving city. The ISO offers a wide-range of programming that appeals to a variety of audiences, featuring outstanding artists from our community and from all over the world, and I’m proud to support it.

IPL Yuletide Celebration History Background The IPL Yuletide Celebration has a rich 33-year history. Prior to the existence of this beloved family tradition, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra filled its December calendar with everything from Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio to The Nutcracker with Butler University and holiday-themed pops shows.

In 1986, the ISO changed gears completely and became the first American orchestra to create an original Broadway-style holiday Yuletide Celebration 2017 extravaganza with singing, dancing, puppetry, and many more theatrical elements. The IPL Yuletide Celebration started small, with only eight performances in the first year, and it’s grown to be the largest orchestra-produced holiday presentation of its kind in North America. The ISO now presents more than 30 performances attracting more than 44,000 people each December.

Hosts This is opera star and Indianapolis native Angela Brown’s third time hosting the IPL Yuletide Celebration (2012, 2014), and the second time for winner of The Voice Josh Kaufman to host (2016). Many noted celebrities have hosted the IPL Yuletide Celebration: veteran comedienne and star of stage, screen, and television Kaye Ballard (1991); 1981 Miss America and host of the Discovery Channel’s Home Matters Susan Powell (1993); two-time Tony Award-winning actress Judy Kaye (1994–95); longtime star as “The Phantom” in Broadway’s production of The Phantom of the Opera, Ted Keegan (1999); acclaimed singer and actress who portrayed Dr. Josie Conklin on the ABC Television’s daytime soap opera One Life To Live, Pamela Isaacs (2001); two-time Grammy Award-winning soprano Sylvia McNair (2003); legendary pop music icon Maureen McGovern (2009); Broadway star Ben Crawford (2012, 2014); and vocal legend Sandi Patty (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2017).

IPL Yuletide Celebration History Conductors The first conductor for the IPL Yuletide Celebration was longtime Oklahoma City Philharmonic Music Director Joel Levine (1986–90). Following Maestro Levine were Indianapolis Opera Artistic Director James Caraher (1991), Boston Pops Music Director Keith Lockhart (1992–93) and current ISO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly (1994–present).

Another noted member of the IPL Yuletide Celebration artistic team was Broadway choreographer Mercedes Ellington, granddaughter of famed bandleader Duke Ellington, who choreographed elaborate dance elements for the show for 10 years (1991–2000). This year’s choreographer and stage director, Jennifer Ladner, started Yuletide Celebration 2017 with the show as Dance Captain, and was then promoted to Assistant Choreographer shortly after. Jennifer then moved into the role of Choreographer and eventually into Director/ Choreographer, a title she holds to this day.

IPL Yuletide Celebration by the Numbers The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s holiday production of the IPL Yuletide Celebration includes: 61 vocalists, dancers, actors, and specialized performers in the company­ 12 tons of scenery and light grids 3,500 different points of light within the scenery via fiber-optic lighting 310 theatrical lighting fixtures, 43 computer-controlled moving lights, and 60 color-changing lights 350+ costumes and 120 props 96 microphones More than 2,600 batteries to power the artists’ microphones during the course of the 31-performance run 12 snow machines

Jack Everly, Conductor Jack Everly is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Indianapolis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). He has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, and appears regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. Everly will conduct more than 90 performances in more than 22 North American cities this season.

Everly is also the Music Director of the IPL Yuletide Celebration, now a 33-year tradition. He led the ISO in its first Pops recording, Yuletide Celebration, Volume One. Some of his other recordings include In The Presence featuring the Czech Philharmonic and Daniel Rodriguez; Sandi Patty’s Broadway Stories; the soundtrack to Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame; and Everything’s Coming Up Roses: The Overtures of Jule Styne.

As Music Director of the National Memorial Day Concert and A Capitol Fourth on PBS, Everly proudly leads the National Symphony Orchestra in these patriotic celebrations on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. These concerts attract hundreds of thousands of attendees on the lawn and the broadcasts reach millions of viewers, making them some of the highest-rated programs on PBS.

Everly, a graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, is a recipient of the 2015 Indiana Historical Society Living Legends Award and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Franklin College in his home state of Indiana. He has been a proud resident of the Indianapolis community for more than 17 years, and when not on the podium, you can find him at home with his family, which includes Max the wonder dog.

Originally appointed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, Everly was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, where he served as Music Director. In addition to his ABT tenure, he teamed with Marvin Hamlisch on Broadway shows that Hamlisch scored.

He conducted Carol Channing hundreds of times in Hello, Dolly! in two separate Broadway productions.

Angela Brown, Host Angela Brown personifies the ideal soprano: sheer vocal power, luxurious finesse, and shimmering, high pianissimos.

With a charming personality larger than life, she unites opera, pops, and gospel in one sensational voice. A featured artist on the two-time Grammy Award®-winning recording “Ask Your Mama,” Brown’s international reputation continues to grow.

Her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in the title role of Aida captured instant attention from international print and broadcast media and catapulted Brown onto the world’s prestigious opera and symphonic stages. The success of her show inspired Brown to establish a not for profit foundation, Morning Brown, Inc., with the mission of providing musical outreach and awareness to underserved audiences and communities.

She is a frequent featured artist on national television and radio broadcasts and has served as a representative of the United States at home and abroad. Brown was presented in Shanghai at the World Expo 2010 as a guest of USA Pavilion and the United States Consulate. She opened the One Nation Working Together Rally in Washington, D.C., by singing the National Anthem on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. She also sang at the National Cathedral at the personal request of President Bush for the national memorial service for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout her career, Brown has joined forces with symphonic pops legends Marvin Hamlisch, Jack Everly, and Erich Kunzel while traveling the world for classical performances. She always welcomes a return home for appearances with the Indianapolis Symphony or to sing the National Anthem for the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, and Indy Eleven. Josh Kaufman, Host For most of his life, Josh Kaufman has used his smooth, masterful vocals to uplift and inspire. As winner of the sixth season of The Voice, the Indianapolisbased singer/ songwriter proved himself possessed of a stunning range and singular power to capture pure emotion. Also a longtime guitarist and piano player, Kaufman is now gearing up to release a debut album that channels his rich vocal work into a gracefully catchy blend of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and classic pop.

Growing up in a musical family, the Florida-born Kaufman got his start singing in church when he was just four years old. In addition to performing in choirs throughout his childhood, he further honed his vocal skills in part by closely studying the layered harmonies of gospel music. While attending high school in Blacksburg, Virginia, Kaufman began playing in bands and writing his own songs, mining much inspiration from the soulful yet fiery and guitar-fueled sound of

Lenny Kravitz. Kaufman kept up with his music throughout college, and some years after earning his degree in philosophy went on to become a staple of the Indianapolis music scene as a solo artist and frontman for local soul band, The New Etiquette.

Along with setting to work on his debut album, Kaufman’s kept busy over the past few years by sitting in with The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, headlining the Indy Jazz Fest, and making his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning Pippin (for which he played the lead and title role).

Naming soul legends like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and introspective singer/ songwriters like Jeff Buckley and Paul Simon among his favorite artists, Kaufman says one of his main goals for his debut is to make music infused with a powerful intimacy.

“I’m a pretty reserved and introverted person by nature, and singing has always been a way to express the things that I might not express otherwise,” Kaufman notes. “At its best, music creates this deep emotional connection that transcends explanation,” he continues, “and that, I think, is what keeps me making music.”

Troupe Vertigo Working in collaboration with national symphonies, Troupe Vertigo’s high-caliber cirque acts are seamlessly woven together with each symphony’s unique music selections— creating an evening of stunning physical feats choreographed into works of art.

Los Angeles-based Troupe Vertigo was founded in 2009 by wife and husband team Aloysia Gavre and Rex Camphuis. With an eclectic mix of circus, dance, and theater, Troupe Vertigo shows ignite the imagination in mentally and physically spellbinding ways.

IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION CAST Collett “Coco” Adler is thrilled to be performing in her very first Yuletide Celebration.

She is 5 years old and lives in Brownsburg with her Dad, Mom, big brother, Beckett, and big sister, Scarlett. She attends preschool and her favorite thing about it is seeing her friends. She has been a dancer at Premier Academy of the Performing Arts since she could walk, and has been on their competition team for 2 seasons. She loves jazz because she gets to dance with Kendall, Faith, Sophia, and Maysie. Coco also enjoys playing soccer and baseball and thoroughly enjoying every moment life gives her. Coco wants to thanks Miss Meaghan, Miss Dionne, and all her friends and family for supporting and loving her!

Dan Allis is pleased to return for his 30th season with IPL Yuletide Celebration. Through the years, Dan has developed a deep and meaningful relationship with the reindeer, especially Dasher, Dancer, and Rudolph. Having an interest in puppetry from a young age, he served for 20 years as a puppeteer on Time for Timothy, a children’s TV show in puppet drama format that aired locally from 1957 to 1999. A native of Indianapolis, Dan is a member of the management team at Fairway Village, a local nursing home specializing in memory care.

Kari Baker is excited to make her debut with Yuletide Celebration! Credits include: national tours of Beauty and the Beast (Ensemble/ u/s Belle); cruise ships including Norwegian Cruise Line (Singer/Dancer); regional theatre including Anything Goes (Hope), Anything Goes (Virtue), Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, The Producers, The Wizard of Oz, and Front Page Flo. IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION CAST Donata Cucinotta is thrilled to be returning for her 3rd Yuletide! Since relocating to Indiana, she has appeared with Indianapolis Opera in Mansfield Park and this fall was hailed by Tom Alvarez as a “knockout performer” and by Dan Grossman of Nuvo for her “exceptionally strong vocal and acting performance” as Musetta in La Boheme. She headlined the Columbus Ind., Philharmonic’s recent performance Honoring Veterans, which was also presented with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. She maintains a voice studio in Seymour, Ind., where she lives with her family. @SopranoDonata DonataCucinotta.com Vandi Enzor performs opera, musicals, theater, film, chamber music, sacred works, piano, and voiceover/audiobooks, in addition to modeling. Jerry Hacker has performed for the past 29 years with the IPL Yuletide Celebration and was a featured vocalist with the ISO at Symphony on the Prairie for Broadway’s Standing Ovations. He has performed in On the Air! with the Detroit, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh symphonies and in the ISO’s concert production of Hello, Dolly! He has also sung in Sandi Patty’s Broadway with the Kansas, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati orchestras. Jerry has sung with Indianapolis Opera and was the Bishop/Grantaire in Beef and Boards’ production of Les Misérables. He is the husband of Kathleen and the father of Madeleine and Olivia and thanks the Lord above for all of the blessings in his life.

While a member of the New York City Opera company, Scott Hogsed sang many roles, including Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd. While a graduate student at Indiana University, he was heard in the roles of Ford in Falstaff, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Germont in La traviata, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, and Signor Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza. Recently, he was Javert in Les Misérables in Bloomington, Ind. This year marks his sixth season with Yuletide. Equity credits include a tour with the Theater of the Star’s production of Camelot as Lancelot opposite Robert Goulet’s King Arthur and Curly in Oklahoma!

IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION CAST Robin Leigh Massie has established herself as a versatile artist in opera, concert, and musical theatre. She made her New York City Opera debut as Flora in The Turn of The Screw. She has also performed with the Tulsa, Kentucky, Glimmerglass, and Princeton Opera companies. She has sung with several playhouses, done musical theatre, and toured South America singing in The Phantom of the Opera. In musical theatre, she performed the role of Jellylorum in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s CATS in Hamburg, Germany. Massie has performed eleven times in Yuletide Celebration and also with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Susquehanna Valley Chorale, The Bucks County Choral Society, and The New York City Ballet. Recent performances include Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, and Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915. Massie is the Chair of Vocal Studies and Director of Opera Theater at Cairn University and a Priority Adjunct Assistant Professor of Voice at Westminster Choir College. Soli Deo Gloria!

Amanda McCarthy is excited to be performing her fourth year of Yuletide! Favorite credits include: Peter Pan, Snow White, South Pacific, Carousel, The Mikado, Junie B. Jones, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. She graduated in 2014 from Indiana Wesleyan with a degree in voice performance and since moving to Indianapolis, has been recording demos for print music publishing. She resides in Indianapolis with her husband, Sean, and their two perfect doggies.

Charlie Metzger is thrilled to be a part of his fourth IPL Yuletide Celebration! In the past year, he has played the role of Tommy Albright in Brigadoon, Footlite Musicals; Professor Bhaer in Little Women The Musical at Hendricks Civic Theater; and Indy Fringe performances of Queen Day! Christina Nicastro is a native of Dunellen, N.J. She recently completed her master’s studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where she sang the role of Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes. Betsy Norton is thrilled to be joining the IPL Yuletide Celebration! She has been singing and acting on stages around Indianapolis since she was just a girl. Recent performances include Margo in Bright Star (Phoenix Theatre), Dyanne in Million Dollar Quartet (Actors Theatre of Indiana), Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls and a featured singer for the past three years in A Beef and Boards Christmas (both at Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre), and Janet in The Rocky Horror Show (Zach Rosing Productions). Amy Owens has been part of the national tour for Monty Python’s Spamalot and for Jubilee! in Las Vegas. Regional productions include: Cats, Cabaret, Chicago, Joseph, Sister Act, South Pacific, Dreamgirls, and The Addams Family. Amy has performed in numerous Pops concerts with the Indianapolis, Baltimore, Jacksonville, and Raleigh Symphony Orchestras. Amy spent five wonderful holiday seasons as a Rockette in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and is also the former Face of MyINDY-TV (2013–15). Joseph Perkins, Jr. Truly, it’s “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!” Joseph is returning for his eighth year in IPL’s Yuletide Celebration. Other symphonic credits include Ashley Brown’s Broadway, world premieres of Hello Dolly! in Concert, On Broadway with Kander & Ebb, Anything Goes, and Hairspray in Concert! with both the Indianapolis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. As a featured vocalist and dancer, Joseph has also performed with the Fort Worth and Dallas Symphonies, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. An Indianapolis native, Joseph can also be seen on stage at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre and with the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus. He is a frequent guest artist with symphonies throughout North America and is a sought-after performer on the high seas, having visited over 70 countries while performing on board the Silver Spirit and the Regent Voyager as their production singer. He has appeared in numerous regional theater productions and toured the U.S. with Kiss Me, Kate. His debut CD, Broadway Classics, is available on iTunes.

Natalie Renee is excited to be returning to ISO for a third year with Yuletide! She has performed with several symphonies around the country, including the the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in their productions of Hairspray, In Concert! with John Waters and in select post-show concerts with Divas of Song.

She was recently seen as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act (Arts Center of Coastal Carolina) and as Annie Shepard in It Shoulda Been You (Mason Street Warehouse). Natalie continues to travel and perform with the USO Show Troupe for our military forces and veterans. Other credits include Hairspray (Cindy, Pearl, Dynamite) and Rent (“Seasons of Love” soloist) national and international tours, and The Drowsy Chaperone as Trix (St. Michael’s and Gateway Playhouses).

Additionally, Natalie chaplains at NYU and writes and lectures on Christianity. She is now recording an EP of her original music that uses The Odes of Solomon as text: available in the spring. IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Clare Henkel, Costume Designer As the costume designer for Yuletide, I am responsible for choosing and sourcing every item of clothing that each performer puts on his or her body. Every item! This includes wigs, hats, shoes, tights, and specialty makeup, as well as all of those sparkly gowns and tuxedos. The number of pieces is in the thousands. It’s a lot to keep track of! 2018 is my fifteenth year designing the costumes for Yuletide. Since I began, the show has gotten larger and larger. And, I’d like to think, the costumes have grown along with the show. I know that I have certainly grown as a designer.

My background was mostly in regional theatre, designing Shakespeare, an occasional musical, and a lot of what are called straight plays, meaning without music. My, what a different world this is! Ty Johnson—the Executive Producer for Yuletide, the ISO’s Pops shows, and theatrical concerts—works very closely with me to determine the look and feel of each number. It took awhile for me to up my game to the level that was needed for Yuletide. With a gorgeous Symphony hall, a huge set, and the entire, fabulous Indianapolis Symphony onstage, every color choice, every sequin, every crystal mattered for the very talented cast of singers and dancers that is assembled each November for the show.

My process starts early—as soon as I find out the host or hostess for the next year. I start to source his or her costumes, using the resources I have online, and with talented people I know. Many of the gowns are custom built for each hostess as well as for specialty numbers. We have a warehouse full of gowns, jackets, specialty costumes, shoes, jewelry, etc. that I do go back to and pull things from. Numbers like “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and “Santa Tap” are considered almost sacred, and only get minor tweaks from year to year. You don’t mess with perfection! Other numbers get re-imagined and updated. And each year, there are new, exciting numbers that we create from scratch.

I work on Yuletide almost year-round, in addition to and between all of the other shows I design each year. I am surrounded by two wonderful assistants, drapers, wigmasters and milliners as well as the fantastic Wardrobe Union here at the ISO. I couldn’t do this without them, and I feel extremely lucky to be able to help create the magic that is Yuletide!

IPL YULETIDE CELEBRATION Production Staff Ty A. Johnson, Executive Producer, is proud to be producing IPL Yuletide Celebration for its 33rd year of bringing great holiday music and performances to the Indianapolis community. Ty is the producer of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Printing Partner’s Pops Series. He is also the producer of the ISO Film Series, including brokering the deals with studios to successfully present the Harry Potter: In Concert series, the Star Wars trilogy, and the world premiere of An American in Paris, among many others. His many theatrical concert productions can be seen all over North America. To answer the question he is most often asked, “No, I never tire of hearing Christmas music even though I work with it year round.” Offstage, he is a bona fide sci-fi geek, wine enthusiast, fitness and hot yoga buff, and dog lover. Ty would like to thank all the remarkable ISO musicians, production staff, stage crew, and dressers who make the IPL Yuletide Celebration so magical year after year.

Katie Angel, Stage Manager, is thrilled to be returning for Yuletide Celebration! Katie is a graduate of Butler University and has stage managed for Phoenix Rising Dance, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, Indiana Ballet Conservatory, Indiana City Ballet, the Country Music Expo, Know No Stranger, Cirque Indy, Circle City Aerodrome, and the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame. Ken Saltzman, Production Stage Manager, happily returns for his 19th Yuletide Celebration.

Recently, he stage managed Renée Fleming in Concert, Eugene Onegin, and Barber of Seville for Michigan Opera Theatre and the ISO’s Magic Flute. Upcoming engagements include Candide, Hansel & Gretel, and Grapes of Wrath for MOT. Ken and his husband, Duane Prill, make their home on Lamoka Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Greg Sanders, Vocal Director, finished his master’s degree in conducting in May 2011, where he studied with Dr. Eric Stark and Mr. Henry Leck. He serves as the Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus and the Director of Music at All Souls Unitarian Church. He is also on the staff of the Center Grove High School Choral Department. Aside from his choral work, Greg is a pianist, vocal coach, and chamber musician, performing extensively for piano recitals, festivals, and conferences in Indianapolis and regionally. He has held staff and faculty choral and piano positions at Butler University and Franklin College, where he taught choral ensembles, studio piano, accompanying, and chamber music as well as coached and performed with instrumentalists and singers. He returns to the ISO production team after serving as the vocal director for many ISO Printing Partner Pops Series productions, including the IPL Yuletide Celebration.

Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra Under the direction of maestro Matthew Kraemer, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra performs music composed for the small orchestra—from classical masterworks to music from the theater and silent film genres. Attend The J. K. Family Foundation Words on Music one hour before every Lilly Classical Series concert in the theatre to hear from classical music experts. Before and after the concert, enjoy a drink and mingle with friends in the Encore Lounge.

Parking EZ Park Garage is open on the west side of Pennsylvania Street between Market and Washington Streets. A canopy connects the garage to the Hilbert Circle Theatre lobby, giving you a close and convenient parking option. For evening concerts, pay on your way in to save the time and trouble of waiting in line to pay after the concert.
