Welcome Dear Friends, I am honored to welcome you into our home as the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra presents our 34th annual IPL Yuletide Celebration! This is a treasured holiday tradition for our organization, and we are excited to make memories with you this festive season.

There are so many things that make this a special time of year: the food, the activities, the people we celebrate with . . . but for me, it really is the music that makes the holidays so wonderful. I have so many treasured memories associated with the music of the season, and it brings me such joy to share this time with you and our spectacular musicians.

Each year of Yuletide brings its own unique charm, and 2019 is no exception. I am delighted for you to experience host Frankie Moreno’s incredible talent as he brings his technical precision, Vegas energy, and rock ‘n’ roll style to the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Frankie has been entertaining fans since his debut on Star Search as a 10-year-old prodigy, and has consistently wowed with his songwriting, showmanship, and on-stage antics. Frankie has seen six albums hit the Billboard Top Ten including Jazz, Classical, and Classical Crossover charts. He’s brought his talented lead guitarist, Alec Zeilon, with him to Indianapolis, and I guarantee you’ll be impressed by his energy and unique style.

In addition to Frankie and our phenomenal IPL Yuletide Celebration ensemble members, we have several familiar faces being highlighted this year. ISO Principal Trumpet Conrad Jones and violinist Sherry Hong are adding their energy to our holiday tradition, and the dancers of local troupe Expressenz (spotted last year on NBC’s World of Dance) return for another festive season with us. Prepare to be wowed again by the strength and aerial artistry of Troupe Vertigo.

Music in My Life: Pedro Fernández, Percussion Pedro Fernández joined the percussion section of the Indianapolis Symphony in 2015. He spends his summers performing with the Chautauqua Symphony in upstate New York and has held positions with the Houston Ballet Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony. Pedro has also performed with the Detroit, Houston, Columbus, and Hawaii Symphonies, the Louisville Orchestra, and the Florida Grand Opera. Internationally, he has appeared with the Costa Rica National Symphony and as both soloist and percussionist/timpanist of the National Symphony of Panama.

Pedro holds degrees from University of Miami and Sam Houston State University. He also attended the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Aspen, Pacific, and Texas Music Festivals.

Pedro is an artist for Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Majestic Percussion, Freer Percussion, and Grover Pro Percussion.

Who is your favorite composer and why?

I go through phases, but it would be solid to say that Shostakovich is currently my favorite composer. Reading about all the troubles he went through in his life and listening to the way he portrays it in his music is absolutely fascinating to me.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not performing?

When I’m not performing, you’ll see me riding my bike around Indianapolis, or you can find me on a golf course.

What’s your favorite memory with the Symphony?

My favorite memory is being featured in the 2017 Yuletide Celebration. It was an amazing experience seeing how it all came together and to get a bit out of my comfort zone for it. I’ve had several memorable performances, but the one that comes to mind right now is Milhaud’s Le Création du monde in the spring of 2016.

Why were you interested in being part of an orchestra?

My first experience in an orchestra was at age 11 and I haven’t stopped since. To be surrounded by so many fantastic musicians on stage is such an amazing feeling.

Any advice for a young person considering a career in the orchestra?

To be persistent. I believe you have to dive head first into making this happen.

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

In my high school days back in Panama, I won a gold medal in the internal Math Olympics for my school. I ended up getting extra tutoring on Math and Physics in order to participate in the nationwide Olympics in both of those disciplines. I didn’t place nationally, but I learned a great deal about both subjects in preparation.

Musicians Around Town

Musicians of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will once again join the IU Medical School Orchestra for a concert of holiday music at Riley Hospital for Children in downtown Indianapolis. The concert on December 10 takes place in the lobby of the hospital and is streamed into the rooms of patients who are unable to attend. This collaboration has become a holiday tradition for the ISO musicians.

Make plans to be at Broad Ripple Brewpub on December 9 at 7 p.m. for Holiday Horns, featuring community members and several ISO horn players playing festive music for the holidays.

Join ISO Associate Concertmaster Philip Palermo, violist Michael Isaac Strauss, and pianist Kent Cook for the concert Palermo Presents at Northminster Presbyterian Church on February 9, 2020, at 6 p.m. The trio will present a concert of diverse chamber repertoire.

Jill Boaz, horn, has published three Christmas Horn Sextets with the International Horn Society.

Home for the holidays—here’s how some of our musicians plan to celebrate!

David Bellman, Principal Clarinet, and his wife, Ingrid, cello, will be traveling to Houston to attend the wedding of former ISO violist Sheldon Person.

Jen Christen, Principal Oboe, will fly to Buffalo, N.Y., to be with her 95-year-old grandma.

Robert Danforth, Principal Horn, will be preparing his annual holiday tradition of cooking Thai food for Christmas dinner.

Pedro Fernández, percussion, will visit family in Panama over the holidays.

Riley Giampaolo, bass trombone, will be preparing the Italian tradition of 7 seafoods on Christmas Eve, in addition to experiencing his first Hoosier Christmas with his girlfriend, Mallory, and her family. He also will play with the Cincinnati Symphony for New Year’s Eve.

Rick Graef, Assistant Principal Horn, will be enjoying the surf and sun in the Florida Keys with his kids and his partner, Abigail.

Mike Muszynski, bassoon, and his family will cut down their own Christmas tree, and will also attend a family party in Cincinnati, where the highlight is Mike playing Christmas carols on the bassoon.

During the month of December, Roger Roe, Assistant Principal Oboe, will be helping to coordinate the Advent music at Central Christian Church in addition to organizing a Christmas caroling group that sings at Wheeler Mission Ministries homeless shelter in Indianapolis.

Inside the Usher Corps: Brenda Dinkeldein Ushers are Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra ambassadors and an integral part of our success! These volunteers are responsible for providing outstanding customer service to Hilbert Circle Theatre and Kroger Symphony on the Prairie patrons. Read the experience first-hand from one of our dedicated ISO volunteers, Brenda Dinkeldein. Brenda has been with the ISO since 2015, loves to usher on aisles 5 and 6, and has given more than 700 hours of service! She received the Volunteer of the Year award for the 2018–19 season.

Tell us about yourself.

I’ve lived in Indianapolis all of my life growing up on the west side and residing for the past 41 years on the southwest side. I am a licensed childcare provider (I detest being called a babysitter) going on my 40th year. I’m a single mom with a daughter and son and four very special grandchildren!

What motivated you to become an ISO volunteer?

Life is better with music. Yuletide has been a huge tradition with my children (and now in-laws and grandchildren), and I’ve always wished I could have attended more than once. Becoming a volunteer was just the answer. My children and I have attended every Yuletide Celebration. In elementary school, I participated in the “Music Memory Contest” for several years when Maestro Izler Solomon was the conductor of the Symphony. If I remember correctly, I received a perfect score most years.

Have you ever played an instrument?

I tried playing a flute in the 6th grade (keyword is “tried”). However, I’ve sang in church choirs for many years.

Who is your favorite composer or type of music to listen to?

My favorite composer hands down is John Williams. It was truly an honor to usher both performances he conducted with the ISO in February 2018. I love to listen to instrumental music, especially Christmas music.

What has been your favorite experience with the ISO so far?

I write in my journal every day, and the first night I ushered was a Yuletide performance. I wrote, “I’m so honored that I got to open the door for the reindeer.” Ushering at the John Williams’ concerts was another highlight. Finally, the most important experience was receiving the “Volunteer of the Year Award” in August for the 2018–19 season.

Why is volunteering for the ISO important to you?

Music, Music, Music! As well as meeting new friends and welcoming patrons who attend. This has been an amazing blessing for me.

What would you tell someone who is considering volunteering with the ISO? Don’t waste anymore time—Do It Now!

IPL Yuletide Celebration History Background

The IPL Yuletide Celebration has a rich 34year history. Prior to the existence of this beloved family tradition, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra filled its December calendar with everything from Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio to The Nutcracker with Butler University and holiday-themed pops shows.

In 1986, the ISO changed gears completely and became the first American orchestra to create an original Broadway-style holiday extravaganza with singing, dancing, Hosts Angela Brown & Josh Kaufman, puppetry, and many more theatrical Yuletide Celebration 2018 elements. The IPL Yuletide Celebration started small, with only eight performances in the first year, and it has grown to be the largest orchestra-produced holiday presentation of its kind in North America. The ISO now presents more than 30 performances attracting more than 44,000 people each December.

Host This is singer Frankie Moreno’s first time hosting the IPL Yuletide Celebration. Many noted celebrities have hosted the IPL Yuletide Celebration: veteran comedienne and star of stage, screen, and television Kaye Ballard (1991); 1981 Miss America and host of the Discovery Channel’s Home Matters Susan Powell (1993); two-time Tony Award-winning actress Judy Kaye (1994–95); longtime star as “The Phantom” in Broadway’s production of The Phantom of the Opera, Ted Keegan (1999); acclaimed singer and actress who portrayed Dr. Josie Conklin on the ABC Television’s daytime soap opera One Life To Live, Pamela Isaacs (2001); two-time Grammy Award-winning soprano Sylvia McNair (2003); legendary pop

IPL Yuletide Celebration History music icon Maureen McGovern (2009); Broadway star Ben Crawford (2012, 2014); vocal legend Sandi Patty (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2017); opera star Angela Brown (2012, 2014, 2018); and winner of The Voice Josh Kaufman (2016, 2018).

Conductors The first conductor for the IPL Yuletide Celebration was longtime Oklahoma City Philharmonic Music Director Joel Levine (1986–90). Following Maestro Levine were Indianapolis Opera Artistic Director James Caraher (1991), Boston Pops Music Director Keith Lockhart (1992–93) and current ISO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly (1994–present). Another noted member of the IPL Yuletide Celebration artistic team was Broadway choreographer Mercedes Ellington, granddaughter of famed bandleader Duke Ellington, who choreographed elaborate dance elements for the show for 10 years (1991–2000). This year’s choreographer and stage director, Jennifer Ladner, started with the show as Dance Captain, and was then promoted to Assistant Choreographer shortly after. Jennifer then moved into the role of Choreographer and eventually into Director/Choreographer, a title she holds to this day.

IPL Yuletide Celebration by the Numbers There’s a lot that goes into the show! The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s holiday production of the IPL Yuletide Celebration includes: 61 vocalists, dancers, actors, and specialized 350+ costumes and 120 props performers in the company­ 96 microphones 12 tons of scenery and light grids More than 2,600 batteries to power the 3,500 different points of light within artists’ microphones during the course the scenery via fiber-optic lighting of the 30-performance run 310 theatrical lighting fixtures, 12 snow machines 43 computer-controlled moving lights, 200 cups of decorated hot chocolate used and 60 color-changing lights on stage for The Polar Express!

Jack Everly, Conductor Jack Everly is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Indianapolis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). He has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the San Francisco Symphony, the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, and the Seattle Symphony. Everly will conduct more than 90 performances in more than 22 North American cities this season.

As Music Director of the National Memorial Day Concert and A Capitol Fourth on PBS, Everly proudly leads the National Symphony Orchestra in these patriotic celebrations on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. These concerts attract hundreds of thousands of attendees on the lawn and the broadcasts reach millions of viewers, making them some of the highest-rated programs on PBS.

Everly is also the Music Director of the IPL Yuletide Celebration, now a 34-year tradition.

He led the ISO in its first Pops recording, Yuletide Celebration, Volume One. Some of his other recordings include In The Presence featuring the Czech Philharmonic and Daniel Rodriguez; Sandi Patty’s Broadway Stories; the soundtrack to Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame; and Everything’s Coming Up Roses: The Overtures of Jule Styne.

Originally appointed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, Everly was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, where he served as Music Director. In addition to his ABT tenure, he teamed with Marvin Hamlisch on Broadway shows that Hamlisch scored. He conducted Carol Channing hundreds of times in Hello, Dolly! in two separate Broadway productions.

Everly, a graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, is a recipient of the 2015 Indiana Historical Society Living Legends Award and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Franklin College in his home state of Indiana. He has been a proud resident of the Indianapolis community for more than 18 years and would like to thank his colleagues of ISO musicians for their continued commitment to excellence and for filling our community with music all year long.

Frankie Moreno, Host With five Top Ten Albums, an Emmy Nomination, and being named Las Vegas’ “Headliner of The Year” four times running, Frankie Moreno is wowing audiences from coast to coast with his own brand of musical genre-blurring rock ‘n’ roll.

As a child prodigy on the piano and a gifted multi-instrumentalist, Frankie was first introduced to American audiences at the age of 10 with his debut on CBS’s Star Search. His performance on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars brought him into America’s living rooms again, performing his self-penned hit “Tangerine Honey.” He continues with television appearances, magazine covers, and sold-out concerts including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Hollywood Bowl.

Reaching over one million record sales worldwide, Frankie is writing and recording new music constantly. In April 2019, he made music history by being the only artist to have four albums reach the Top Ten on the Billboard Charts in less than one year. In that same year, he broke his own record with a fifth album reaching a Top Ten spot.

Frankie’s collaboration for Sony Records with world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell, At Home With Friends, reached Billboard’s number one spot in both Classical and Classical Crossover. Other artists included on this album were Sting, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, Kristin Chenoweth, and Regina Spektor.

Together they filmed “Great Performances: Live at Lincoln Center” for PBS. Their follow up album, Musical Gifts, debuted at number eight, featuring Placido Domingo, Gloria Estefan, Allison Krauss, and Chick Corea.

Frankie toured the U.S. with Grammy-nominated artists Billy Currington and Sugarland.

He also joined multi-platinum artists Air Supply for their world tour as musical director, and wrote five songs on their album Mumbo Jumbo, including their radio hit single “Dance with Me,” reaching Billboard’s Top 40 charts. In addition to his high-energy rock ‘n’ roll shows, Frankie also performs his original works with America’s premier orchestras for his “Roll Over Beethoven” symphony shows.

Frankie Moreno commands audiences around the world with his highly contagious music and playful stage antics. His songs are cleverly crafted and his musicianship is virtuoso. He is unquestionably a unique artist and an allaround talent who puts his heart and soul into his music.

Expressenz Expressenz Dance Center was founded in September 2008 by Director/Owner Karla Curatolo.

Our mission since has been to enhance the love of dance for all individuals, regardless of ability, while providing quality training, structure, and cultivating expression to all who desire excellence in dance. Alumni from our program can be found in university dance programs across the country and dancing professionally in both company and commercial work. IPL Yuletide Celebration Cast Donata Cucinotta is thrilled to be returning for her fourth Yuletide!

She was most recently a featured artist in Vienna to Broadway with the ISO and can be seen on Encore! Pippin on Disney+. An Indiana local, Donata performed last season with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. She sang Musetta in La Bohème with Indianapolis Opera and is looking forward to returning this spring as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. She maintains a voice studio in Seymour, Indiana, where she lives with her family. @SopranoDonata DonataCucinotta.com

Conrad Jones was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 2016. Prior to this position, he served as Principal Trumpet of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. During the summer season, he is Principal Trumpet of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, Ore., and also performs at the Mainly Mozart, Strings, and Grand Tetons Music Festivals. A native of Long Island, N.Y., Jones received his bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music before continuing onto the Professional Studies program at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, Calif. Outside of Indianapolis, Jones has performed as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Chicago Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, and CityMusic Cleveland. He was Acting Second Trumpet with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra during the 2015–16 season.

Sherry Hong, praised for her “silken tone” by the Chicago Tribune, has been a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra first violin section since 2007. In addition to collaborating on numerous chamber music outreach programs, Hong has also served the organization off-stage in various leadership and education settings. Prior to her appointment in Indianapolis, Hong served as concertmaster of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and was a member of the Grant Park Orchestra. She also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their contemporary music series, MusicNOW. Hong’s performances as a recitalist, orchestral musician, and in chamber music have taken her to stages across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. She was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in the Chicago area, where she began playing the violin at age 3. She studied at the University of Michigan and La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, and performs on a violin crafted by Camillo de Camille in 1734.

IPL Yuletide Celebration Cast Aaron Fuksa is thrilled to return to Yuletide as a writer and performer.

Aaron was last seen as the Male Authority Figure with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Hairspray in Concert. Other performances include B-Side Productions’ A Man of No Importance, Indianapolis, Seattle and Oregon Symphonies Yuletide Celebration as Santa, The Karaoke Show (NY/Scotland), and the National Tours of Jesus Christ Superstar and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Aaron is one half of the comedy duo 2Scoops that regularly performs at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater with his writing partner Adam Enright. www.aaronfuksa.com

Getting his start at 17 with Frankie Moreno, Alec Zeilon has been professionally touring the U.S. and around the world for more than five years, performing in venues such as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Kensington Palace. Playing lead guitar in a band as diverse as Frankie’s has made his style intrinsically unique, fusing the styles of early blues, country, rock, and funk, to even more modern styles in R&B and pop. Genre-meshing has been the foundation of Alec’s playing style and he continues to grow as the world of music continues to move forward and change.

Collett “Coco” Adler is thrilled to be performing in her second Yuletide Celebration. She is a joyful 6-year-old and lives in Brownsburg with her Dad, Mom, big brother Beckett, and big sister Scarlett. She is in kindergarten at St. Malachy Catholic School and her favorite part of the day is lunch. She has been a dancer at Premier Academy of the Performing Arts since she could walk, and has been on their competition team for 3 seasons. She loves jazz, hip hop, and making up her own moves. Coco also enjoys playing soccer, baseball, and thoroughly loving every moment life gives her. Coco wants to thank all her friends and family for supporting and loving her!

Dan Allis is pleased to return for his 31st season with IPL Yuletide Celebration. Dan continues to enjoy spending quality time with the reindeer, especially Dasher, Dancer, and Rudolph. Having an interest in puppetry from a young age, he served for 20 years as a puppeteer on Time for Timothy, a children’s TV show in puppet drama format, which aired locally from 1957 to 1999. A native of Indianapolis, Dan is a member of the management team at Fairway Village, a local nursing home specializing in memory care.

Eric Best is very excited to be back with his Yuletide family again for a third year. He’s enjoyed many roles in multiple theatre shows here in Indianapolis with one being the recent Beef and Boards production of Hairspray. Eric has been accepted on full scholarships to Dance Intensives in New York, Houston, and LA. He’s undecided as to which discipline he will pursue, but is extremely excited to see what the future holds. Eric would like to thank his many supporters for all of the love shown to him over the years.

Ian Black is thrilled to be a part of Yuletide Celebration for the second year. Recent credits include A Grand Night for Singing (ATI), A Beef and Boards Christmas (16–17), “Tommy Djilas” in The Music Man, and “Von Hussler” in Mary Poppins (Booth Tarkington). He is a member of the Indianapolis-based trio, iambic, known for its popular covers in three-part harmony. He’d like to thank his friends/family for their support, give a shout out to Eagle Church where he is on the pastoral staff, and offer special thanks to everyone involved with Yuletide. While a member of the New York City Opera company, Scott Hogsed sang many roles, including Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd. While a graduate student at Indiana University, he was heard in the roles of Ford in Falstaff, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Germont in La traviata, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, and Signor Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza. Recently, he was Javert in Les Misérables in Bloomington, Ind. This year marks his seventh season with Yuletide. Equity credits include a tour with the Theater of the Star’s production of Camelot as Lancelot opposite Robert Goulet’s King Arthur and Curly in Oklahoma!

Michael Humphrey is a professional dancer/choreographer. He was a dance major at Ball State University. In college, Michael joined the Ball State Dance Theatre, which he was a member of for five years, and he also was part of the Ball State University Code Red Dance Team. Since college,

IPL Yuletide Celebration Cast Michael has worked in Los Angeles as a dancer for Snoop Dogg/Carl Thomas video, as well as playing an intern on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. He also works with Indiana Pacemates in appearance performances as well as with the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders.

Doug King is an Indianapolis local director, choreographer, and equity actor. On stage, Doug primarily works with Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre having been in over a hundred productions.

Some include Will Parker, Oklahoma; The Scarecrow, Wizard of Oz; Frank Shultz, Showboat; Cosmo Brown, Singin’ in the Rain; and Joy, Cinderella. Doug was on the first national tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and has directed nearly a dozen productions of the show at various theatres and schools. This is Doug’s fourth year dancing with Yuletide Celebration as well as a few Broadway and New Years Eve shows. He is on the dance faculty at Anderson University teaching tap, jazz, and musical theatre, and he works with numerous high schools and universities with their choral and theatre departments.

Emilie Kouatchou is thrilled to be making her debut with the IPL Yuletide Celebration. She is an Illinois native and a recent graduate of the University of Michigan’s musical theatre program (Go Blue!). Credits include Oklahoma (Laurent), Merrily We Roll Along (Beth), Passing Strange (Mother), Sweeney Todd (Johanna), Me & My Girl (Duchess), Little Shop of Horrors (Crystal), Carousel (Carrie), Violet (Ensemble), and A Man of No Importance (Adele). She also recently performed selections from West Side Story with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under the conduction of Leonard Slatkin. She would like to thank her family and friends for their constant love and support!

Robin Leigh Massie has established herself as a versatile artist in opera, concert, and musical theatre. She made her New York City Opera debut as Flora in The Turn of The Screw. She has also performed with the Tulsa, Kentucky, Glimmerglass, and Princeton Opera companies. She has sung with several playhouses, done musical theatre, and toured South America singing in The Phantom of the Opera. In musical theatre, she performed the role of Jellylorum in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS in Hamburg, Germany. Massie has performed eleven times in Yuletide Celebration and also with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Susquehanna Valley Chorale, The Bucks County Choral Society, and The New York City Ballet. Recent performances include Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah, and Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915. Massie is the Chair of Vocal Studies and Director of Opera Theater at Cairn University and a Priority Adjunct Assistant Professor of Voice at Westminster Choir College. Soli Deo Gloria!

Amanda McCarthy is excited to be performing her fifth year of Yuletide! Favorite credits include: Peter Pan, Snow White, South Pacific, Carousel, The Mikado, Junie B. Jones, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. She graduated in 2014 from Indiana Wesleyan with a degree in Voice Performance and since moving to Indianapolis, she has been recording demos for print music publishing. She resides in Indianapolis with her husband, baby Arlo, and their two doggies.

Charlie Metzger is thrilled to be a part of his fifth IPL Yuletide Celebration! In the past year he has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony as a vocalist in the world premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Live Soundtrack, a Parisian chorus member in A Night in Paris, and at Conner Prairie as a supporting vocalist for Besty Wolfe, Jim Hogan, and Richard Todd Adams in a production of Broadway Hits! Pierre Perez is back for a second year with Yuletide! An alumnus of Indiana University, he studied for several years at the Jacobs School of Music. Pierre has remained an active singer in the Indianapolis community as a member of the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus.

During the day he helps companies Do Better Work with Lessonly, a growing software company in Indianapolis.

Joseph Perkins, Jr. Truly, it’s “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!” Joseph is returning for his ninth year with IPL Yuletide Celebration. Natalie Renee is excited to be returning to the ISO for a fourth year with Yuletide! What’s more, she gets to share the stage with her cousin again! She has performed with several symphonies around the country, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in their productions of Hairspray, In Concert! with John Waters and in select postshow concerts with Divas of Song. She was recently seen as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act (Arts Center of Coastal Carolina) and as Annie Shepard in It Shoulda Been You (Mason Street Warehouse). Other credits include Hairspray (Cindy, Pearl, Dynamite) and Rent (Seasons of Love Soloist) National and International tours, and The Drowsy Chaperone as Trix (St. Michael’s and Gateway Playhouses). Ella Reese Smith is a second grader at Mill Creek West Elementary School. She is full of life and is an absolute joy to everyone around her. She loves to dance and sing, especially to anything Johnny Cash! Ella is a great student and is academically thriving, having already been placed in highability classes. Ella is the middle child of five and enjoys it mostly, but “sometimes not so much.”

Ella is so excited to be in Yuletide Celebration this year after coming to see the show ever since she was big enough to see over the chair in front of her. This is her second year in the performance and she is even more excited than last year!

Joe Veale is a NYC-based actor with a fondness for dogs, bourbon, and four-leaf clovers. He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Nerve Project Theatre Co (@nerveprojecttheatrecompany), a nonprofit company dedicated to awakening bravery through evocative theatrical experiences.

Before moving to NYC, he worked extensively regionally as a member of the Resident Acting Company at the Historic Barter Theatre. Recent Off-Broadway credits include Enter Laughing (Marvin, U.S David, and Dance Captain-York Theatre), Great Expectations (Pip-Hudson Guild Theatre), and The Wrong Box (Wickham-Theatre for a New City). IPL Yuletide Celebration Cast Spotlight: Jerry Hacker Cast member Jerry Hacker started attending Yuletide Celebration in 1988 and hasn’t stopped. In 1989, he joined the cast and has performed in all but one production of Yuletide Celebration, most notably as the Papa in ’Twas the Night Before Christmas for most of those years. Jerry is retiring from Yuletide after this season, but he’s not leaving without plenty of magical memories.

What is your favorite part about being the Papa in ’Twas the Night Before Christmas?

My favorite part is watching the reaction of the audience to everything that is happening on stage.

Additionally, sharing this moment with my wife Kathy (who played the mom) and my children (nestled in the bed) made this very special for many years.

Do you have a favorite year of Yuletide?

It is difficult to pick a favorite. The year the ISO hosted the African Children’s Choir, with Sandi Patty as the host, was one of the most touching years for my wife and me. Sharing the joy with those children was unforgettable. Every year has been great!

What will you miss most about not being in Yuletide?

I’ll miss the Yuletide family. I have been blessed! Singing with the ISO has been such a gift and I do not take that for granted. Nor do I take for granted singing for Maestro Jack Everly. When you are part of a team that works together for 6 to 8 weeks to create a show, you have each other’s back. I have been part of the most wonderful Christmas show, with one of the finest orchestras in the country, and the best support staff, stagehands, costumers, and cast. The cast creates a bond throughout the month and when the last curtain falls on the last show, there is a mental adjustment required to “get back to it.” I will miss that also!

What are you looking forward to in retirement?

I will get to experience the month of December in a very different way. I will be retiring from Allison Transmission after 36 years sometime next year. 2020 will be brand new in many ways and I am really looking forward to what my new routines will bring.

Any advice for the new Papa in ’Twas the Night Before Christmas who will follow in your footsteps?

Enjoy the view from the stage and always remember that many children are listening to every word you say and sing during ’Twas. It is part of the Magic of Christmas for young and for old!

IPL Yuletide Celebration Staff Spotlight: Jennifer Ladner, Director & Choreographer Director and Choreographer Jennifer Ladner is always thinking about dance. When she walks down the street, she watches how people move. When she takes or teaches a dance class, she files away ideas in her head for future choreography.

Sometimes inspiration comes from a movie or where she least expects it. But after being a part of Yuletide Celebration for the past 30 years, she has plenty of experience and knowledge to rely on.

Jennifer joined Yuletide in 1989 as a dancer, but quickly became more involved, first as a Dance Captain, then as Assistant Choreographer, then a few more iterations before becoming the Choreographer and Stage Director. Her job is no easy task, making more than 50 dancers and singers on the stage flow seamlessly around props, people, and a full orchestra, all while making it look effortless. But this is a job she relishes. “Doing a brand new show every year is challenging,” Jennifer explains. “There are so many variables, and it’s such a huge show with high production values, but we all come together to do this magical show.”

Jennifer’s creative process is different every time, but it starts with listening to the music. A lot.

Meetings about the upcoming Yuletide start in January, right after the previous Yuletide wraps up. Jennifer starts to graph out her choreography in the late spring, but doesn’t get to see it in action until rehearsals start. “It’s interesting putting things together because it may look great on paper, but until you have a room full of dancers and singers and musicians, you just don’t know if it’s going to work,” she says. “It usually turns out great, but if not, we go back to the drawing board and workshop it some more.”

When rehearsals do start, the Production Team has a nightly meeting after each rehearsal that can easily last two or three hours. “Ty Johnson and Jack Everly have a brilliant eye for what the final product should look like, and as a team, we all work together wonderfully,” Jennifer says.

Jennifer’s lifelong career with dance companies across the country has also helped her to hone her choreography and stage directing skills. In addition to working with IPL Yuletide Celebration, Jennifer has choreographed and directed dozens of theatrical and symphonic concerts.

She toured North America in the cast of Sophisticated Ellington and Pops Goes 48

Vegas. She also danced in the companies of the Arizona Ballet Theatre and Dance Kaleidoscope. Jennifer has performed at Carnegie Hall and created staging for premiere events in New York and other major U.S. cities. In midwinter and early spring, Jennifer spends much of her time traveling the country as a guest judge and emcee for major dance competitions. Locally, her work has been seen at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Company, Phoenix Theatre, and the IRT. Jennifer also spent 25 years as part of the faculty at Butler University.

As she was preparing for this year’s IPL Yuletide Celebration, she was excited to be working with Frankie Moreno as he hosts for the first time.

“Frankie is so charismatic and fun,” she says, “and it’s been a blast building the show around him.”

The Polar Express sequence is definitely a highlight for her, as well as the new elements of Holly Jolly Dollies. “Watch for some big scenic elements in the show this year,” she says. “It’ll be exciting! Plus the costumes are just breathtaking.

This show is a true blessing for me and I hope the community feels the same way. We have a gem in Yuletide Celebration and it sets the gold standard for what a Christmas show should be.”

Ty A. Johnson, Executive Producer, is proud to be producing IPL Yuletide Celebration for its 34th year of bringing great holiday music and performances to the Indianapolis community. Ty is the producer of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Printing Partner’s Pops Series. He is also the producer of the ISO Film Series, including brokering the deals with studios to successfully present the Harry Potter: In Concert series, the Star Wars trilogy, and the world premiere of An American in Paris, among many others. His many theatrical concert productions can be seen all over North America. To answer the question he is most often asked, “No, I never tire of hearing Christmas music even though I work with it year round.” Offstage, he is a bona fide sci-fi geek, wine enthusiast, fitness and hot yoga buff, and dog lover. Ty would like to thank all the remarkable ISO musicians, production staff, stage crew, and dressers who make the IPL Yuletide Celebration so magical year after year.

Katie Angel, Production Stage Manager, is thrilled to be returning for Yuletide Celebration! Katie is a graduate of Butler University and has stage managed for Phoenix Rising Dance, Dance Kaleidoscope, Indianapolis Civic Theatre, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, Indiana Ballet Conservatory, Indiana City Ballet, the Country Music Expo, Know No Stranger, Cirque Indy, Circle City Aerodrome, and the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame. She is the founder and CEO of Angel Burlesque, voted Indianapolis’ “Best Burlesque Troupe.” Additionally, she has been honored with the title of “Best Burlesque Performer.” Her signature Klingon number was featured at the inaugural “Nerdlesque Festival” in New York City and the Emerald City ComiCon in Seattle. Katie is also the “Friendly Witch” at Pumpkin Town at the Indianapolis Zoo during ZooBoo! Anne Nicole Beck, Assistant Choreographer, directs, teaches, judges, and choreographs locally and globally. Performance credits with the ISO include Hairspray (John Waters/Micky Dolenz), Hello, Dolly! (Gary Beach/Sandi Patty), Guys and Dolls (Hal Linden), On Broadway (Beth Leavel), Anything Goes (Rachel York /Judy Kaye), and many of their touring Pops productions. This marks Anne’s 13th Yuletide Celebration as a performer and her fifth as assistant choreographer. Broadway/ National credits include Saturday Night Fever (Original Broadway Cast), The Who’s Tommy (Sally Simpson), Cats (Bombalurina), A Chorus Line (Cassie), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Barbara Eden), and West Side Story (Anita). Presently, she is choreographing at Zionsville High School and Center Grove High School, as well as directing and choreographing at The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre under Executive Director Michael Lasley. She is on faculty at Ball State University in Theatre and Dance. She feels blessed to do what she loves, is grateful for family who support her, and is thankful for audiences who support the arts.

IPL Yuletide Celebration Production Staff Lina Benich, Stage Manager, is excited to return for her third Yuletide Celebration! Hailing from Chicago, Lina has worked with Drury Lane Theatre (Mamma Mia!, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, And Then There Were None), Steppenwolf Theatre Company (The Burials, The Christians, Linda Vista), Chicago Shakespeare Theatre (The Taming of the Shrew), First Folio Theatre (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, Shrew’d!), Kokandy Productions (Grand Hotel), and A Crew of Patches. She is a proud graduate of the Steppenwolf Professional Leadership Program and Emerson College. Thanks to the ISO and her supportive family.

Stuart Duke, Lighting Designer, has been a member of the Yuletide creative team for more than three decades. Recent designs include Orwell in America Off-Broadway, La Traviata for Palm Beach Opera, Fun Home at Weston Playhouse, and Matilda at Walnut Street Theatre. In New York, Stuart has designed lighting for The Rothschilds, Cast of Characters, Home Games, The Matchmaker, Broadway Jukebox, Frankie (directed by George Abbott) and jon & jen. His regional credits include the world premiere of The Night Seasons, written and directed by Horton Foote, Kathleen Battle, and Grover Washington Jr. in concert at Carnegie Hall, a revival of Rags for the Paper Mill Playhouse, and Christopher Lloyd in Death of a Salesman. He has designed for Indianapolis Opera, Huntington Theatre, Portland Stage, McCarter Theatre, Indiana Repertory, Goodspeed Musicals, Folger Shakespeare Theatre, North Shore Music Theatre, Studio Theatre, and Opera Company of Philadelphia. Stuart has been nominated three times for the Helen Hayes Award and received Indy’s Corbin Patrick Award for Lighting Design.

Clare Henkel, Costume Designer, has designed the costumes for the IPL Yuletide Celebration for the past 15 years. She also designed the Symphonic Pops Consortium’s Cirque Goes to the Movies, Broadway Cirque, Classic FM, Broadway Divas, Anything Goes In Concert, On Broadway with Kander & Ebb, Hairspray In Concert, Irving Berlin: From Rags to Ritzes (Carnegie Hall), Ashley Brown’s Broadway, Pops Goes Vegas!, Disco Days and Boogie Nights, Guys and Dolls In Concert, and Sandi Patty’s Broadway. She has designed costumes for theatres across the country, including the Denver Center Theatre Company, San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, the Arvada Center, La Jolla Playhouse, Arizona Theatre Company, Geva Theatre, Dallas Theatre Center, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Sacramento Theatre Company, North Shore Music Theatre, Aurora Theatre, and Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska. Clare has also designed extensively for Shakespeare at the Colorado, Lake Tahoe, Idaho, and San Francisco Shakespeare Festivals. Her work for dance includes 3rd Law Dance, Frequent Flyers Productions, and Isaacs McCaleb and Dancers, among others. She has been on the faculty at UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and CU Boulder. Clare is part of an ongoing cultural exchange with the Maxim Gorky Theatre in Vladivostok Russia. Matt has also played many of the world’s greatest venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Hampton Court Palace, Olympia in Paris, Sydney Opera House, Monte Carlo Sporting Club, and Vienna State Opera House. He won an Emmy for his work on Disney’s Broadway Hits at Royal Albert Hall.

She has performed with Symphony Orchestras across North America in Sophisticated Ellington Symphony and Swing, and Pops Goes Vegas. She was a guest artist in Symphonic Pops Concerts at Carnegie Hall with the Cincinnati Pops and the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, in addition to working with the Detroit, Alabama, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Seattle, Portland, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. Credits include Starlight Musical’s Wizard of Oz, more than 30 productions at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, and being on faculty at Butler University for more than 25 years. She is the National Emcee/Judge for CRU Dance Competitions and the United States Tournament of Dance. She is the Assistant Director for Tradition—Gala for the Dancers Fund at Lincoln Center. Travis McHale, Associate Lighting Designer, is excited for his sixth Yuletide. Based in New York City, Travis has been the associate designer on Broadway’s Something Rotten!, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Thérèse Raquin, The Heiress, The Lyons, The Winslow Boy, and the revival of Sunset Blvd.

Travis’ award-winning designs have been seen Off-Broadway, at major regional theatres across the country including the world premiere of Terrance McNally’s Mothers & Sons, at Carnegie Hall, on TV for Great Performances on PBS, and on tour with Chita Rivera: A Legendary Celebration. Travis is a proud member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.

Ken Saltzman, Production Stage Manager, is excited to be celebrating his 20th Yuletide Celebration!

Most recently, he stage-managed Michael Fabiano and ABT in Concert, as well as Don Giovanni and Sweeney Todd for Michigan Opera Theatre. Upcoming engagements include Gianni Schicchi/ Buoso’s Ghost, Champion, and Pagliacci for MOT. Ken and his husband, Duane Prill, make their home on Lamoka Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

Greg Sanders, Vocal Director, finished his Master’s Degree in Conducting in May 2011, where he studied with Dr. Eric Stark and Mr. Henry Leck. He serves as the Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus and the Director of Music at All Souls Unitarian Church. He is also on the staff of the Center Grove High School Choral Department. Aside from his choral work, Greg is a pianist, vocal coach, and chamber musician, performing extensively for piano recitals, festivals, and conferences in Indianapolis and regionally. He returns to the ISO Production Team after serving as the Vocal Director for many Printing Partner Pops Series productions, including the IPL Yuletide Celebration.

IPL Yuletide Celebration All-Stars

Over its 34-year history, Yuletide Celebration has featured many established stars such as Angela Brown, Sandi Patty, Josh Kaufman, Maureen McGovern, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Liz Callaway, but here are some other stars from Yuletide Celebration that you may have missed!

Legendary actress, singer, and comedienne Kaye Ballard hosted Yuletide Celebration in 1991.

She played tuba and sang with the Spike Jones Orchestra.

She appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Muppet Show.

Ballard worked with George Clooney.

She passed away this year at the age of 93.

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo was a featured artist in the 1997 Yuletide Celebration.

He had his Yuletide debut when he was just 15.

Costanzo has appeared in opera, concert, recital, film, and on Broadway.

His debut album, ARC, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award.

He was recently named Musical America’s 2019 vocalist of the year.

Ben Crawford served as the co-host of Yuletide Celebration in 2012 and 2014.

He was part of the Yuletide Celebration Ensemble in 2010 and 2011.

Crawford is currently performing as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.

Crawford also appeared in the Broadway productions of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Shrek the Musical, Big Fish, and On the Twentieth Century.

He has been featured on many soundtracks, including Disney’s Frozen.

IPL Yuletide Celebration All-Stars Jarrett Johnson was part of the Yuletide Celebration Ensemble from 2011 to 2015.

He is a Grammy Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, and producer.

Johnson is a featured vocalist with groups like Take 6, m-pact, and Naturally 7.

He can be heard in the background vocals on albums with Michael Bublé, Ariana Grande, and Childish Gambino.

He is currently on tour with Michael Bublé.

Judy Kaye hosted Yuletide Celebration in 1994 and 1995.

She appeared on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime, Mamma Mia!, and Nice Work If You Can Get It. She received a Tony Award in 1988 for The Phantom of the Opera and one in 2014 for Nice Work if You Can Get It. She was a Tony Award nominee in 2002 for Mamma Mia! and in 2006 for Souvenir.

Kaye has appeared in many Broadway productions, including recent productions of Wicked and Anastasia between 2016 and 2019.

Ted Keegan was the host of Yuletide Celebration in 1999.

He has been the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and with the National Tour.

Keegan has performed the role of Phantom in over 24 states across the country.

He made his Broadway debut in the revival of Sweeney Todd.

Keegan also sang the music of Gershwin with Audra McDonald.

Daniel Okulitch was in the Yuletide Celebration Ensemble in 2006 and was a featured artist in 2008.

He has an international career with opera companies and orchestras and has had numerous world premieres, including roles in JFK, The Golden Ticket, Brokeback Mountain, and The Fly, which was conducted by Placido Domingo.

He garnered national attention for his role of Schaunard in the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of La bohème and is known for his interpretation of Mozart roles in opera.

Betsy Wolfe was a featured artist in Yuletide Celebration and an Ensemble member in 2004.

She recently starred as Jenna in the Tony nominated musical Waitress.

She played Cordelia in the Broadway revival of Falsettos.

She is known for her performance as Cathy in the Off-Broadway revival of The Last Five Years.

She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Die Fledermaus.

Arts in Indy Indianapolis Symphonic Choir The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir’s annual Festival of Carols returns to the Warren Performing Arts Center and the Palladium this December! We are thrilled to announce our guest artist lineup, which includes the return of acclaimed Phantom of the Opera star Michele McConnell, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the choral students of Mt. Vernon High School and Herron High School. A very special addition to this year’s show will include a Christmas Gospel Celebration featuring nationally recognized Gospel recording artist Rodnie Bryant and friends. Join the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra for A Baroque Christmas, December 15, at 3 p.m. New to ICO audiences this year, the timeless Bach Christmas Oratorio will feature Cantatas Number 1 and 3. Always a seasonal favorite, the ICO also will perform the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah with choir and soloists. On December 16 at 7:30 p.m., you become part of the artistry along with choir and soloists, performing choruses from Handel’s Messiah.
