In my first months as Chief Executive Officer of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work alongside our conductors, musicians, administrative staff, board members, and volunteers. Together, we aspire to serve our community by offering musical and educational encounters that inspire and entertain. I was drawn to the ISO not only by the artistic quality of the orchestra and strength of our leadership, but because of our organization’s demonstrated commitment to providing our patrons a superior experience however and wherever they enjoy the ISO. There are many successes to celebrate from the last fiscal year: the ISO was one of only four orchestras chosen for the Kennedy Center’s SHIFT Festival of American Orchestras; Maestro John Williams was gracious enough to lead our musicians in two unforgettable performances; and we crowned the Lilly Classical Series with a celebration of Mozart’s final year, including a dynamic staging of the composer’s The Magic Flute. Ticket sales and fee income grew 7.8% over FY17 – reaching an all-time high and surpassing $11 million. The efforts of our Development team and Board of Directors to cultivate contributions resulted in gifts of $8.72 million to our Annual Fund. The popularity of our diverse programming, including the new Bank of America Film Series and IPL Yuletide Celebration, brought nearly 10,000 new households to the Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Even though we had many positive artistic and financial highlights, the ISO’s fiscal year closed with a general operating loss. The overall cost of our performances increased – both through concert production expenses and musician salaries – while our revenue sources did not grow enough to offset the rise in expenditures. When it became evident during the latter months of the fiscal year that a deficit was likely, the ISO’s Senior Management Team and the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee took action, implementing aggressive measures to produce a different outcome in the next fiscal year.

I am proud of the work our leadership has completed to nurture a sound financial future for the ISO. Overly optimistic sales and fundraising goals in recent years were based on unsustainable year-over-year growth; the current year’s goals in these areas are more realistic. We analyzed projects that were contributing to the deficit, and made strategic changes to eliminate programs deemed to be an unacceptable drain on resources. The FY19 budget has been moderated in many areas to reduce risk. Where we have made projections to increase revenue, such as our forthcoming plans to expand the 2019 Kroger Symphony on the Prairie season, we have devoted significant time and resources to give our strategies every chance of success. We are optimistic that these changes will result in reports of a general operating budget surplus when we meet at this time next year.

Our orchestra is a treasured pillar of the community, and I am honored to be a part of the ISO family. The passion and drive of our conductors and musicians – qualities I witnessed in every concert I experienced these past months – are traits shared by our talented staff and volunteer leaders. I look forward to collaborating with all these gifted individuals to bring our patrons a year filled with excitement and incredible music!
