2024 REFLECTIONS

I’mwritingthesewordsmonthsbeforeyouread themand,bythetimeyoureadthem,Iwillhave completedthefirstyearofmytwoyearsof serviceasyourIHCpresident.Duringthistime, IhopeourpathshavecrossedatIHCoranIHC event;ifwehavenotyetinteracted,let’sfixthat —wecanpraytogetheratShabbatservices, noshatFirstSundayBagels,deepenour understandingofJudaisminanAdultEdclass, crochetawarmhatwithMitzvahStitchers,or packperiodproductswiththeVolunteerCircle. Youprobablyhaveyourownfavoritewaytobe JewishatIHC;tellmeaboutitandI’llgladlymeet youthere!!

IHCistheheartofIndianapolisJudaismlocated intheheartofIndianapolis.You—eachofyou andallofyou—aretheheartofIHC.Irepeatthis ateveryopportunitybecauseitistrue:You sustainIHCsothatIHC,throughthesacred partnershipofitsclergy,executivestaff,andlay leadership,canfulfillIHC’smissionandmitzva h tosustainyou.

SPIRITUAL LIFE Worshipand community

2024markedanotheryearofinspiringmoments together,learning,praying,andworkingtocreate a KehillahKedosha,asacredcommunity. OurHighHolyDays,Shabbat,andholiday celebrationshavebeenmoresignificantthan ever,withfullsanctuariesandnewandold friendsgatheringtogethertomakeIHCfeellike home.Wealsosawariseinthosecomfortable usingLiveStreamtojoinusfromadistance. ForthoseunabletogettoIHC,ourstreaming ofservices,classes,and programscontinues tobeanimportantlifeline.

ThevarietyofAdultEducationofferingsthisyear hasbeentrulyinspiring.Moreparticipantsare findingIHCahomeforlearningthaneverbefore. FromourextremelyfullIntrotoJudaismclasses toadvancedofferingswithallourclergyand programstaff,therehasbeensomethingfor everyoneatIHC.

Theyearwasalsofilledwithjoyousweddings, b’naimitzvah,babynamings,andconversion celebrations.Wehaveworkedhardtoensure thisplaceisawelcomingcommunity,andthe feedbackhasbeenoverwhelminglypositive.

Ourdynamicstaffandclergyteamworklong hourstoconnectwithcongregants,checkinwith thoseunabletotraveltoIHCandsitwiththose goingthroughlife’smostpositiveandnegative experiences.Beingapartofsuchalargeand caringcommunitymeanseverythingtoour members,andwehearthegratitudedaily.

Inthecomingmonths,lookforourcreativenew OlamShabbattocontinue,aswellasourFamily andTotprogrammingwithourECCandJewish LearningProgram.Expectcontinuedinnovation inShabbatandholidayprogramming.Expect morefocusonsocialjusticeissueslikefood insecurityandaccesstoreproductivehealth care,andexpectopportunitiestorollupyour sleevesandtakepart.Watchforspecialguests andartistsinresidenceandournewest opportunitytovisitIsraelandshowyoursupport withIHCnextyear.Ourcommunity continues togainmomentumandstrengthaswegrow innumbers.

Thispositionallowsmetheuniqueopportunity toseenotonlytheamazingthingsthatIHChas accomplishedinthepastyear,but,also,allof thefantasticthingsthatwewillaccomplishin thefutureandtheamazingpeoplethatbring themtoreality.Mypreviousreportshave centeredaroundthethemeoftransparency, withthehopethattheadditionalinsightintoour financeswillhelpourcongregantsunderstand howyourincrediblesupportisutilized,howyour sustainingamountiscalculated,andwhyour sustainingamounthasincreased.Financial transparencywillalwaysbethemostessential itemasyourtreasurer,andIhopethisallows youtocontinueto INVEST inIHC.Iaskthatyou continuetoinvestinIHCtonotonlyenableIHC toremainthepremierandmostprogressive synagogueinIndiana,butalso INVEST toensure thatIHC continuestogrowintothevision ofwhatyouwantIHCtobecome.

Thesustainingamountreflectstheamount ofsupportneededfromeachmemberfamilyto givetoIHCtosupporttheday-to-dayoperations withouttheneedforadditionalfundraising.The sustainingamountforthisfiscalyearis$3,600. Thisamountcanchangeyearlybasedona numberoffactorsandafterintensereview bystaff,clergy,andtheIHCBoardofDirectors.

Unfortunately,IHCisnotimmunetothe economicandinflationaryrealitiesofthe broadereconomy,andthesustainingamount forthisfiscalyearhasincreased.Weappreciate yourpastandcurrentsupportandaskthatyou continuetoINVESTinIHCwiththenew sustainingamount.Thissustainingamountis vitalforIHCtocontinueoperatingasavibrant andleadingsynagogueandfulfillourmission statement.Yousimplyhavenoideahow vitalyoursupportisandhowmuchitis appreciatedbyeverycongregant,staff, clergy,andboardmember.

Wewouldneverwantacongregant’sfinancial abilitytopreventthemfromparticipatingand beinganactivememberofourcommunity.We appreciateeverygiftandeverydonationand wanteveryonetoknowthateverydonationhas aHUGEimpact.Asyourtreasurer,Isimplyask thatyouthinkaboutyourinvestmentinIHC. Ifyoucan,pleaseconsiderincreasingyour investmenttoIHCandgivethesustaining amountifpossible.Ifnot,pleaseconsider increasingyourgiftandinvestment,perhaps 5-10%.Thisslightincreasemakesanoutsized differencetoIHC.BeforeIbecameaboard member,mycommitmentdidn’tchangebecause Isimplydidn’tknowhowmuchofadifference mygiftmadetoIHC.

Thispageoutlinesthefiscalyear2024operatingbudget.Whileweoftenfinishtheyearwithbetterresults thanbudgeted,itisimportanttonotethatwearecurrentlyfacingadeficit,andinflationarypressures impactus,aswell.Asaresult,wehavedrawnfromourreservestosupportthisbudget,whichaccounts fortheincreasedannualrequestwithahighersustainingamount.

Additionally,adulteducation programsflourished,withclasses onTorahstudy,Jewish philosophy,andmodernethical dilemmasattractingenthusiastic participation.TheLindaE.Cantor LeadershipFund,established thisyearwithagenerous$50,000 endowmentfromtheCantor family,hasbegunitsworkin strengtheningleadershiptraining forourlayleaders.

IHChastakensignificantstepsto ensurelong-termfinancialhealth. Oursustainingannualfinancial commitmentisnowat$3,600, withencouragementformembers toincreasetheircontributions by10%iffeasible.Wehaveseen positiveresponsestothis initiative,withmanycongregants steppinguptosupportthe congregation’sfuture. Additionally,ourendowment andinvestmentstrategieshave positionedusforcontinued financialstability,allowingus toexpandprogrammingand maintainourfacilities.

CommunityEngagement andSocialAction

Ourdedicationto tikkunolam hasbeenunwavering.Through partnershipswithlocal organizations,IHChasprovided food,shelter,andadvocacyfor thoseinneed.Wehaveactively participatedininterfaith dialogues,workingtopromote understandingandcooperation amongdiversereligious communitiesinIndianapolis. TheSocialJusticeCommitteehas focusedonpressingissuessuch asrefugeeassistance, environmentalsustainability, andvoterengagement.
