REFLECTIONS Dear IHC Family — I’m writing these words months before you read them and, by the time you read them, I will have completed the first year of my two years of service as your IHC president. During this time, I hope our paths have crossed at IHC or an IHC event; if we have not yet interacted, let’s fix that — we can pray together at Shabbat services, nosh at First Sunday Bagels, deepen our understanding of Judaism in an Adult Ed class, crochet a warm hat with Mitzvah Stitchers, or pack period products with the Volunteer Circle.

You probably have your own favorite way to be Jewish at IHC; tell me about it and I’ll gladly meet you there!!

IHC is the heart of Indianapolis Judaism located in the heart of Indianapolis. You — each of you and all of you — are the heart of IHC. I repeat this at every opportunity because it is true: You sustain IHC so that IHC, through the sacred partnership of its clergy, executive staff, and lay leadership, can fulfill IHC’s mission and mitzvah to sustain you.

The pages of this annual report tell the story of how this happens. It happens when IHC congregants, staff, and clergy generously share their time, talents, and treasure. It happens when you host an Oneg Shabbat, work a shift in the Sisterhood gift shop, or raise the sukkah with Brotherhood. It happens when you receive a pastoral visit in the hospital. It happens when you make a monthly or annual financial commitment to support IHC’s budget. It happens when you walk into our well maintained and secure synagogue. And it happens when you contemplate your future and include IHC in your estate plan. As you reflect on the value IHC provides to you and your loved ones, please reflect that value back to IHC, whether through volunteer hours, sustaining commitments, or legacy giving.

SPIRITUAL LIFE Worship and community

2024 marked another year of inspiring moments together, learning, praying, and working to create a Kehillah Kedosha, a sacred community.

Our High Holy Days, Shabbat, and holiday celebrations have been more significant than ever, with full sanctuaries and new and old friends gathering together to make IHC feel like home. We also saw a rise in those comfortable using LiveStream to join us from a distance.

For those unable to get to IHC, our streaming of services, classes, and programs continues to be an important lifeline.

The variety of Adult Education offerings this year has been truly inspiring. More participants are finding IHC a home for learning than ever before.

From our extremely full Intro to Judaism classes to advanced offerings with all our clergy and program staff, there has been something for everyone at IHC. The year was also filled with joyous weddings, b’nai mitzvah, baby namings, and conversion celebrations. We have worked hard to ensure this place is a welcoming community, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Our dynamic staff and clergy team work long hours to connect with congregants, check in with those unable to travel to IHC and sit with those going through life’s most positive and negative experiences. Being a part of such a large and caring community means everything to our members, and we hear the gratitude daily.

In the coming months, look for our creative new Olam Shabbat to continue, as well as our Family and Tot programming with our ECC and Jewish Learning Program. Expect continued innovation in Shabbat and holiday programming. Expect more focus on social justice issues like food insecurity and access to reproductive health care, and expect opportunities to roll up your sleeves and take part. Watch for special guests and artists in residence and our newest opportunity to visit Israel and show your support with IHC next year. Our community continues to gain momentum and strength as we grow in numbers.

I am so humbled and excited to have continued to serve as the treasurer for IHC again this year.

This position allows me the unique opportunity to see not only the amazing things that IHC has accomplished in the past year, but, also, all of the fantastic things that we will accomplish in the future and the amazing people that bring them to reality. My previous reports have centered around the theme of transparency, with the hope that the additional insight into our finances will help our congregants understand how your incredible support is utilized, how your sustaining amount is calculated, and why our sustaining amount has increased. Financial transparency will always be the most essential item as your treasurer, and I hope this allows you to continue to INVEST in IHC. I ask that you continue to invest in IHC to not only enable IHC to remain the premier and most progressive synagogue in Indiana, but also INVEST to ensure that IHC continues to grow into the vision of what you want IHC to become.

The sustaining amount reflects the amount of support needed from each member family to give to IHC to support the day-to-day operations without the need for additional fundraising. The sustaining amount for this fiscal year is $3,600.

This amount can change yearly based on a number of factors and after intense review by staff, clergy, and the IHC Board of Directors.

Unfortunately, IHC is not immune to the economic and inflationary realities of the broader economy, and the sustaining amount for this fiscal year has increased. We appreciate your past and current support and ask that you continue to INVEST in IHC with the new sustaining amount. This sustaining amount is vital for IHC to continue operating as a vibrant and leading synagogue and fulfill our mission statement. You simply have no idea how vital your support is and how much it is appreciated by every congregant, staff, clergy, and board member.

We would never want a congregant’s financial ability to prevent them from participating and being an active member of our community. We appreciate every gift and every donation and want everyone to know that every donation has a HUGE impact. As your treasurer, I simply ask that you think about your investment in IHC. If you can, please consider increasing your investment to IHC and give the sustaining amount if possible. If not, please consider increasing your gift and investment, perhaps 5-10%. This slight increase makes an outsized difference to IHC. Before I became a board member, my commitment didn’t change because I simply didn’t know how much of a difference my gift made to IHC. This page outlines the fiscal year 2024 operating budget. While we often finish the year with better results than budgeted, it is important to note that we are currently facing a deficit, and inflationary pressures impact us, as well. As a result, we have drawn from our reserves to support this budget, which accounts for the increased annual request with a higher sustaining amount. *The "Staffing, Facilities and Administration" expenses include payroll and benefits, building maintenance and improvements, insurance, and utilities, among other costs. In the interest of transparency, we hope this explanation provides clarity on the resources needed to continue delivering the exceptional services and events at IHC.

Support IHC is more than just a building located at 6501 N. Meridian Street; it is a community dedicated to promoting the Jewish value of tikkun olam, or "repairing the world." The impact of our volunteers, congregants, and clergy is felt in numerous ways that are often difficult to quantify.

Below is an overview of the efforts made by various groups at IHC in 2024 and how we have positively influenced both our Jewish community and the greater Indianapolis community.

SISTERHOOD Through our extensive Social Action program, we continued to support organizations like Greenbriar Elementary, Popsie's Pantry, the Damien Center, and others.

We were fortunate to celebrate Simchat Torah at B’nai Jeshurun on Thursday night. Our students were amazed by the young crowd that packed the synagogue in order to dance and celebrate with the Torah. Central Synagogue welcomed us on Friday night for Shabbat services. Our Shabbat morning included a text study in Central Park. Throughout the trip, our students were immersed in a city where hearing Hebrew spoken in the streets, finding Jewish terminology – Yiddish and Hebrew – written on advertisements, and seeing a lot of people with Jewish stars or other marks of pride and identity are just commonplace. This was an impactful experience for our students.”

Grow As we reflect on 2024, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (IHC) continues to embody its commitment to faith, community, and social responsibility.

This year has been one of growth, engagement, and renewed dedication to our mission. Through spiritual enrichment, educational opportunities, and acts of tikkun olam, we have strengthened the bonds of our congregation and our broader Indianapolis community.

Spiritual Life and Worship Our congregation gathered in profound and meaningful ways throughout the year, embracing both tradition and innovation in worship. The High Holy Days were particularly inspiring, with our theme, "If Not Now, When?", calling us to reflect on our roles in strengthening both our faith and community. Attendance at Shabbat services remained strong, bolstered by the introduction of new music and interactive elements that engaged members of all ages. The clergy team has continued to provide pastoral care, ensuring that all members feel supported in times of joy and sorrow.

Education and Lifelong Learning Jewish learning has remained a cornerstone of IHC’s mission.

How we make sure our vision continues into the future. experienced increased enrollment, a testament to the dedication of our educators and families.

We emphasized Jewish values, ethics, and history, making learning both accessible and engaging for students of all ages.

Additionally, adult education programs flourished, with classes on Torah study, Jewish philosophy, and modern ethical dilemmas attracting enthusiastic participation. The Linda E. Cantor Leadership Fund, established this year with a generous $50,000 endowment from the Cantor family, has begun its work in strengthening leadership training for our lay leaders.

Financial Sustainability and Stewardship IHC has taken significant steps to ensure long-term financial health.

Our sustaining annual financial commitment is now at $3,600, with encouragement for members to increase their contributions by 10% if feasible. We have seen positive responses to this initiative, with many congregants stepping up to support the congregation’s future.

Additionally, our endowment and investment strategies have positioned us for continued financial stability, allowing us to expand programming and maintain our facilities.

Community Engagement and Social Action Our dedication to tikkun olam has been unwavering. Through partnerships with local organizations, IHC has provided food, shelter, and advocacy for those in need. We have actively participated in interfaith dialogues, working to promote understanding and cooperation among diverse religious communities in Indianapolis.

The Social Justice Committee has focused on pressing issues such as refugee assistance, environmental sustainability, and voter engagement.

Looking Ahead to 2025 As we move forward, our goals include enhancing youth engagement, expanding leadership development opportunities, and further solidifying our financial foundation. The upcoming budget process for fiscal year 2026 will be a key focus, ensuring that our resources align with our mission and aspirations.

With gratitude for the commitment of our clergy, staff, and congregants, we look ahead to another year of spiritual growth, learning, and impactful action. Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation remains a beacon of Jewish life in Indianapolis, guided by the values and traditions that have sustained us for generations.
