Kabbalat Shabbat Services 6:15 p.m. Fridays

Participate in person or visit ihcindy.org/online for Zoom info.

Services, unless otherwise noted, will be live streamed at ihcindy.org/streaming.

INDIANAPOLIS HEBREW CONGREGATION

Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (IHC) is an inclusive Jewish community where all congregants matter, are inspired to action through Jewish values, and experience Judaism in a meaningful way.

Celebrating “b’tzelem Elohim” and Ga’avah

Last summer I participated in the Indy Pride Parade for the first time. Although I have wanted to walk in the Pride Parade previously, this was the first time I was able to . I was excited not only to participate in it as an individual, but also to be part of the Jewish community marching in it together.

As Rabbi Victor Appel wrote: “Reform Judaism has a long and proud history of working for the full inclusion and affirmation of LGBTQ+ people in Jewish life and for their full civil rights. As Reform Jews, we are guided by the belief that all human beings are created b’tzelem Elohim (in the Divine image). As it says in Genesis 1:27, ‘And God created humans in God’s own image, in the image of God, God created them; male and female God created them.’ Rabbi David Saperstein, director emeritus of the Religious Action Center, said: ‘Regardless of context, discrimination against any person arising from apathy, insensitivity, ignorance, fear, or hatred is inconsistent with our fundamental beliefs. We oppose discrimination against all LGBTQIA+ individuals, for the stamp of the Divine is present in each and every one of us.’”

In keeping with many years of IHC’s tradition and the ideology of the Reform Movement, I am thrilled that we will be participating in the Indy Pride Parade again. In a time that I know has been difficult for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am especially proud to be marching in it together. About IHC’s participation in the Indy Pride Parade, IHC Board Member and head of the Ga’avah (Pride) Circle, Carly Traynor said: “It means so much to see members of the IHC community who are straight and cisgender walk alongside those of us who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It creates a wonderful sense of unity and affirms that queer and trans Jews are an important part of the fabric of IHC.”

In support of the LGBTQIA+ community, IHC will feature a guest speaker during Shabbat Services on June 13. Our guest speaker will be Angie Tarr, the training and outreach manager for Indiana Youth Group (IYG). Ms. Tarr is an excellent speaker who has taught several sessions for the JLP parents. In each of Ms. Tarr’s sessions, I learned a lot from her, especially about ways to support LBGTQIA+ youth. Ms Tarr will speak about the experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community in recent months, and how to be allies to support members of this community. We will once again begin our Shabbat celebration with an opportunity to write in messages of love.

On Saturday, June 14, the IHC and Jewish community will be marching in the Indy Pride Parade. We will be publicizing details about how to sign up to march together and how to order IHC Pride t-shirts soon. I hope you will be able to join us for this special Shabbat service and/or to march in the Indy Pride Parade.

Especially in a year that has been challenging for many, I am proud of our celebration and support of the LBGTQIA+ community and Pride Shabbat. Last year the Pride Parade was filled with rainbows, joy, and love, and I hope this year it will be too. In the weeks and months ahead, I hope we all have more opportunities to celebrate love, focus on joy, and find hope together.

GA’AVAH

PRAYERS & BLESSINGS FOR PRIDE

From the book

Mishkan Ga’avah: Where Pride Dwells by

A BLESSING FOR PRIDE A PRAYER FOR STRAIGHT FAMILY AND FRIENDS ON PRIDE SHABBAT

M’kor hachayim, Source of life, You have blessed each of us with Your spirit. In Your wisdom, You have made each of us a unique treasure. Ma’yan chayeinu, Wellspring of our lives, cause us to flow with courage, strength, and compassion to live our stories openly, proudly, and joyfully.

Sh’chinah shel ahavah, Presence of love, You embrace us with Your love. May we embrace ourselves, our partners, our lovers, our friends, our children, our dear ones with the power of Your ahavah rabah, Your unending, boundless love.

Ru’ach hashalom, Spirit of peace and wholeness, open our eyes to the gifts and blessings we offer and receive from each other; open our hearts to welcome each other fully and truly; open our hands to embrace, to support, to lift each other, b’gilah b’rinah uv’rei’ut — with joy, with song, and with deep friendship.

Today, as we celebrate renewal, Pride, and community, let us walk together with strength, compassion, and love.

N’vareich et Ma’yan chayeinu asher t’kadesh ut’samei’ach otanu.

We bless You, Wellspring of our lives; may You fill us with joy and sanctity.

Erica Steelman, and Dr. Gloria Becker, 2019

Rock of strength, Shield of our ancestors, let us walk a path of justice and truth. We pray this day for our straight family and friends who stand with us in this struggle for love, acceptance, and equality. Let each of them be blessed with Your love and courage to face another day. Grant to our family and friends the inner fortitude to challenge homophobia and address the oppression of transgender people where they work and play. May they always be honest about our lives and their lives. Let us turn in love toward each other just as the prophet Malachi has taught, “May the hearts of the parents be turned toward the children and the children towards their parents” (3: 24). Then on that day of reconciliation, rejoicing will be heard throughout the land and Your truth, O Eternal One, in our hearts.

V’nomar: amein. And let us say: Amen.

— By Rabbi Denise L. Eger, 2006

Confirmation

In 19 century Germany, at the start of the newly created Confirmation life-cycle event in the Reform movement, the ceremony for teens was placed at the holiday of Shavuot. The holiday’s celebration of the receiving th of Torah was an appropriate connection to young people at the cusp of adulthood making their personal connection to the receiving of Torah. IHC, too, for over 100 years, has been celebrating Confirmation connected to Shavuot. However, in the past decades, scheduling has become challenging. Our students now come from different schools with different exam schedules and camps that start at different times.

As Shavuot can fluctuate between early May and mid-June, we, like many congregations in areas where public schools do not continue into June, faced challenges.

So, our clergy considered how we could make a relevant connection for the kids and still honor what Confirmation is all about. The answer was written on the walls of our sanctuary, literally. On the southern wall of our sanctuary and on the doors of the ark, we have “Kadosh” and “K’doshim T’hiyu” (“Holy” and “You shall be Holy”). This is at the core of who we are as a people and as a congregation. There is no better choice to connect our students to Torah and to our congregation than to explore “K’doshim” (the Torah portion with the Holiness Code) that is reflected in our congregation’s holy space.

Thus, this year, we began our change of focus to exploring the Holiness Code and what it means to be “holy” for each of our students. [Our Confirmation service, at IHC, will now be held on the shabbat in which we read “K’doshim.”]

We hope that you will join us on Friday, May 9, during our Shabbat evening service to celebrate our confirmation students and to hear from them about what is “kadosh” (holy). You will be able to read more about their reflections on what they believe (based on the Edward Murrow radio program on NPR in the 1950s). We have included a sentence from each of their writings below. You will also be able to walk through a display of items that are a reflection of what our students find holy in their lives. We are so proud of our student’s commitment to their Jewish education and their desire to explore who they have been as a Jew, where they are now, and where they hope they will be.

Honoring the Confirmands with the YES Fund

This year’s Confirmation class will be recognized at Shabbat services Friday, May 9. Honor their accomplishments with a contribution to the Sisterhood YES Fund. All Confirmands will receive a handwritten note acknowledging your contribution.

Make your gift online at confirmands, or download the form and send it with your check by May 5 to IHC Sisterhood YES Fund, 6501 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260. Questions? Contact Andrea Pactor, YES Fund Chair, at apactor@gmail.com

MAHJONGG MAVENS

What began as a game embraced by Jewish women in the vibrant melting pot of New York City continued to thrive in the resorts of Upstate New York, and is now flourishing within Jewish communities across the nation. Mahjongg provides an opportunity for women to come together for play, camaraderie, and joy. Although the game originated in China, Jewish women have adapted it and made it our own. The IHC Mahjongg Mavens group has been playing together for years, and new players are always welcome to join in this cherished tradition passed down through generations — a unique form of L’dor V’dor.
