It is so important that we and our younger generation make ourselves acquainted with the cultural aspect of our host country and in that direction, I am happy to announce that His Excellency Khaled Al Kamda, the Director General and his team at Community Development Authority, Government of Dubai, under whose umbrella we operate, has volunteered to extend full support to organize the Emirati Food & Cultural Festival at the Club. This will be done soon.

We shall have dances, involving gents and ladies, authentic Emirati dishes like Ghuzi and I hope all of you will take advantage of that. How funny it sounds when you go to your home country or on travel elsewhere, and you are asked about the culture of this great land to whom we are indebted for having been a host to us for such a long time, and we show ignorance !

I am excited that the recent revival of the Chairman's Trophy event after over 20 years was received with great enthusiasm and saw participation of a vast number of members of all ages. I am grateful to Mr. Kamaludheen C.P who reminded us about this activity.

We are indeed thankful to His Excellency Khaled Al Kamda for having come over with his team to give away the prizes to winners. There was positive feedback from all corners and someone suggested that we should have Kabadi game as part of the event.

Why not? We shall have it. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. Please share them with the General Manager.

We have a membership base of 2500. Over 6000 heads.

Don't we have a pool who could share the cultural side from within the Club ? Dances, dramas, comedy, other skills. Come out folks! Let us be proud of our own talent and present it to other members of the Club.

On 19th January, 25 enthusiastic ladies of theIndia Club enjoyed a full day trip to Kalba.

This year was different … there was no extra We were served with breakfast and piping hot crunch in our food like last year! (Remember? coffee and tea. We left the Club at 9.30am and Sandstorm!) If there were only 15 stalls from members, let us hope that many more members will show interest in such events. After all the management can only organize and facilitate such events for members but it is our (members’) initiative to make such events a great success!

The Annual Sports Day at the India Club turned out to be a real fun filled carnival. ‘Kebab Bistro’ – is a great place to hang out if you are a lover of Kebabs, Biryani and Chaats. The Chef’s speciality is the Fish Seekh kebab and this is perhaps the only restaurant located in Jumeirah that serves fresh sugarcane juice – Bombay sytle! Everything is prepared here fresh - only after it’s ordered, cause we believe that fresh has a succulent flavor of its own!

The club had organized a bouncy castle and other games at the tennis courts. There were many great performances throughout the evening with great DJ music. Simon Varella did a great job at compering the evening’s proceedings.

It’s a cute place with a large outdoor seating that now has a full Parsee dishes menu available all the time for dine-in and delivery. Kebab Bistro is the only place in the UAE where you can to refresh your memories of the good old times with a ‘mutton Dhansak’ and ‘prawn kawaabs’ or ‘Patra-ni-machhi’ and ‘Sali boti’

Herein, I would like to add that long ago, you had briefed me about Osaka Expo 1970.

Having followed your suggestions, Bharati and I, made it a point to see an Expo which we did in Sept 1992, at Saville, in Spain, the memory of which we cherish to date. Naturally, we will be proud to experience Expo 2020 in Dubai.

PEOPLE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE Vasu feels that larger premises would help to make India Club a more modern and consummate place for family, entertainment, community-building and sports activities. ”Today Dubai has grown by leaps and bounds but unfortunately we stand where we were. When we started, we were known as the Indian Sports Club and therefore I feel that we should have premises where we could have an 18-hole golf course, cricket, badminton, tennis, football and other sporting facilities plus a large multi-purpose hall to host varied functions.”

I remember as a kid in the mid-1970s, I used to go shopping with my mother in the Bur Dubai market, which was made up of just two lanes of shops on the Dubai side of the creek. One of the stores that we used to visit frequently was Regal Stores where one could find premium quality textiles.

There were also times when Regal used to have discount sales and women used to line up from early in the morning to pick up the best from among the lot on offer.

This first happened when Regal introduced shaded saris in the Dubai market and then in 1981 when Rekha wore plain silk saris in Silsila and this fabric sold like hot cakes with the moniker Silsila silk. Regal Traders in Dubai was founded by the family of Vasudev Shroff affectionately known as Vasu Shroff to his friends and peers. Vasu came to Dubai in 1960 and began his long and fruitful association with this emirate, which continues till date.

During this journey, apart from building, consolidating and expanding his business empire, Vasu also invested time in community building, social service and philanthropy. One such feather in his overflowing cap of achievements is his consistent and unwavering commitment to two premier Indian institutions in Dubai – the Indian High School and the India Club, both of which he has nurtured and seen evolve into prestigious organisations of learning and culture-community building respectively.

And he still wants them to grow and expand further but he feels that there are a few constraints. “Our biggest constraint at the moment is space. I remember that in 1980, the Dubai government offered us a large chunk of land near Aweer to construct new club premises but due to the circumstances, we could not avail of that opportunity and let it pass. At that time we were being given land free of cost and we did not take it. Today we wish to expand the India Club but we cannot find land in a suitable location even if we are willing to buy it at very expensive rates.”

But being a true patron of art and culture, Vasu regularly utilises the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium at the Indian High School to promote cultural activities. “Yes, since we do not have an auditorium of our own, whenever the opportunity arises, I try to utilise the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium to host cultural events. “ Vasu also feels that the India Club is a place for families to meet and relax. ”We offer good food at very reasonable prices. We do not want to encourage drinking and driving so we do not organise events that involve such practices. We are a family place where old and young members of families can come together to spend a few precious moments of life. In this respect, we have maintained an impeccable record as a family-oriented centre for cultural and social activities.”

Vasu feels that Dubai is a blessed place, ”Dubai is indeed a blessed place and has the blessings and best wishes of so many who have prospered here. I dream that one day our club would be 100 times larger than what it is. Whether this happens during my lifetime is debatable but still one lives on hope.”

Maybe the younger generation can bring in new energy into the progression and expansion of the club. “The younger generation has been initiated into the process both at the India Club as well as the Indian High School but I still feel that the older trustees have more power in attracting funds for progress than the younger lot. I have had the privilege of working closely with the past, present and future generations of trustees. For the growth and evolution of the India Club, I have worked with those who were older than me, those who are of my age and am also working with the younger generation now.

My life has come a full circle from the past to the present to the future – kal, aaj aur kal!”

The New Year’s Eve was celebrated by India Club on the 31st of December, 2012.

DJ Daenen, Winner of Wall of Fame, enthralled the audience with his groovy music and made sure that everybody got glued to the dance floor. Like every year, the event was sold out well in advance with over a 1000+ members and guests in attendance.

The lively event took place at the Club’s open auditorium which was covered with Shamiana Members were greeted with a welcome drink, which was followed by a lavish buffet comprising exotic salads, Indian and Continental cuisines…with Food Stalls dishing out fresh delicious dishes, straight off the stove.

Our members were glad that they shared this special time of the year with family and friends at India Club.

There is no sincerer love than the love of food.

- George Bernard Shaw India club organized the All India Food Mela on the 15th of February.

A fun-filled family day out, this event saw a lot of bonding and many got to whet their culinary skills. A total of 14 stalls participated, out of which there were quite a few repeats, clearly showing the keen interest of the participants.

The stalls included various cuisines like Bhatia, Maharashtrian, Goan, Keralite, Parsi, Punjabi, Bengali, Lucknowi and Gujarati.

DJ Buddha provided entertainment by playing his sizzling music.

Clowns, Stilt walkers, Face painters, Henna artistes and Bangle makers added further spice to the event.

Colours of Joy! Holi was celebrated at India Club with the lighting of the traditional Holika on Tuesday, 26th March ’13.

“Holi Ke Rang”, a Dance - Drama exhibiting the elements of Holi - like love, relationship, friendship, bonding and traditional values was performed by over 20 students of the Maayavi Dance Institute under the direction of Bhakti Harish.

DJ Music by DJ Nevz added Holi flavour to the evening.

Evergreen Holi songs were played by the DJ to the audience who were in full cheer and spirits to celebrate the festival.

India Club Annual Sports Day Champions aren't made in the gyms.

Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision.

The India Club Annual Sports Day was held on Friday, 15th March ‘13 from 10.30 am till late evening.

The events for the day included – Lemon & Spoon Race for kids, Balloon race for kids, Running race for kids, 7 Tiles for all (Team event), Basket Ball shots, Family Tie Breaker (Penalty Shots), Arm Wrestling (18 yrs to 30 yrs & above 30 yrs to 45 yrs), Table Tennis (Jumbled Doubles under 18 yrs & Jumbled Doubles for Seniors), Family Cricket (for Families), Bowling (Children under 12 yrs, 13 yrs to 16 yrs, Adults & Gents), Squash (Junior Singles & Senior Doubles), Badminton (Family Doubles & Jumbled Doubles) and Tug of War (Team event). The event also included Jumping Castle at the venue as well as Face Painters & Balloon Twisters for the kids.

The Chairman’s Rolling Trophy was reintroduced for the Sports day and was bagged by Leonid & Lenin Sequeira. They emerged Winners in the maximum number of events for the day, which enabled them win the Chairman’s rolling trophy. A replica trophy was given to the Sequeira brothers for the current year 2013.

H.E. Khaled Al Kamda, Director General of the Community Development Authority was the Chief Guest for the day, while Dr. Omar Al Muttana, CEO, Social Regulatory & Licensing Sector, CDA was the Guest of Honour and Mr. Taleh Al Mazmi, Head of Licensing, Community Development Authority was among other officials who graced the prize distribution ceremony.

Dubai Junior Squash League & Dubai Junior Squash Tournament “Squash has been my life and I owe a lot to the sport.”

- Former World No. 1 professional Squash player Jahangir Khan India Club supported UAE Squash Association to host the Dubai Junior Squash League Finals on 9th February ’13 and also the Dubai Junior Squash Tournament from 21st – 23rd February 2013.

Lovely weather …blue calming sea… a visit to Kalba Lagoon was a marvellous experience, to say the least. Our Ladies had a lively Picnic at Kalba on the 19th of January.

After breakfast, our Ladies proceeded to the Museum. The exhibits at the Museum included rare antiques and ancient pieces made of bronze, steel, brass, silver and gold. The visit made them go back in time and see how residents of the past lived.

A display of old styles of houses featured along with the tools and other daily lifestyle elements used, made this an unforgettable visit. The next stop was the Fort built in 1670, which is considered to be the oldest fort in the UAE. Located on a hill at the edge of date gardens, this fort was surrounded by the remains of a few old townhouses. The stop at the Corniche was refreshing amidst the greenery and the crisp cool air. Games of housie and other party games added to the fun.

INT’L WOMEN’S DAY International Women’s Day Celebration 'The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum' India Club, in association with Filmfare ME and Salt N Pepa Magazines, celebrated the International Women’s Day on the 9th of March. The event began with a house full of women chattering, as we welcomed our Chief Guests for the evening, Prathna Adnani and Chetna Shastri. The evening had a lot in store, right from Rangoli Competition where the talented ladies displayed beautiful designs, to the Dessert Recipe Contest which had received a lot of entries, winning the best gift hampers from Chings Secret.

Dr. Nishi, our Guest speaker gave a very inspirational talk on empowerment in a small and big way. This was followed by the felicitation of five well known women.

The popular Filmfare Trivia got the ladies all excited as they were well informed on Bollywood matters, thereby winning FilmFare ME Gift Hampers. A game of tambola was followed by prize distribution. The evening ended with yummy snacks.

MIRACLE GARDEN VISIT Amazing Miracle “Earth laughs in Flowers” – Ralph Waldo Emerson India Club Ladies visited the Dubai Miracle Garden on the 2nd of March. The city’s latest outdoor recreational destination, with a riot of colours as far as the eye can see, features over 45 million flowers in stunning designs and breathtaking shapes.

The ladies had a wonderful time walking through the arc-shaped walkways, a pathway covered with colourful mini-umbrellas, 10 meter -high flower pyramids, water bodies and flower-decked vintage or designer cars. Flowers were in various impressive shapes such as hearts, stars, igloos too. The happy contented faces of our graceful ladies bloomed as if they were inspired by the flowers.

“U TURN”

It’s an award winning play revolving around the companionship shared by a man and woman and depicts as to how their relationship goes through various ups and downs.

The play revolves around two characters - a retired and divorced Major from the Indian Army and a Widow. While reflecting their different attitudes towards life, the play also questions the narrow Indian mentality regarding the concept of companionship, wherein two old people want to stay together, but their children resist.

The staff enjoyed the training and learnt a lot on various topics such as handling difficult customers, customer complaints, telephone etiquette, body language, barriers to communications, etc.

Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar Once a month, a yoga session is conducted for staff members on a regular basis, every first Sunday of the month. The yoga session is done for a batch of about 15- 20 staff members per session and is conducted by Ms. Jyoti Wagh (Yoga Instructor ).
