Cover: Chasing the spectacular Northern Lights in Norway and other dream getaways for members followed the annual competitions, informative workshops. Christmas parties for kids and a New Year-eve bash like no other which saw the Club ring down the curtain on an eventful 2017 with promises of better things to come as refurbishments continue to enhance the experience of its members.

Dear Members,

We had 2 very successful international trips – the first Women’s only trip to Bangkok and Pattaya in November 2017 and the other one in the last week of January to Norway to check out the Northern Lights. Both were well received and we are planning many more trips this year…

Wishing you a happy and prosperous 2018. WE ARE already into the 2nd month of the New Year and with the nonstop activities happening at your Club, it’s very easy to lose track of time.

2017 ends on high note with even more exciting events planned for 2018

Equally popular was the day-long trip to Mussandam, the New Years’ Eve Gala Party and the All India Food Mela. Apart from this, we had the Annual Swimming Gala and Tennis tournaments, a number of ladies’ coffee evenings, the workshops for kids not to forget the special screening of Tiger Zinda Hai and talk on VAT for MNC members… There is more excitement in store with the 54th India Club Annual Day celebrations and the Annual MNC Gala night coming up in a few weeks’ time. Billiards is being introduced at the Club at the newly renovated Splash Bar with two tables dedicated to the sport. We also have another banquet hall next to the Splash Bar for smaller functions and events. The Coolsportz Complex is undergoing a major refurbishment which should be complete by March 2018. Also, in the pipeline is a total new look for the Club’s library. As always, the fun ‘n’ frolic continue and it’s always a pleasure to have you joining us for all the events and activities – we also constantly require your feedback to help us serve you better…

OVER TO

YOU! My getaway experience I MADE my decision to join this tour to Thailand at the last moment and I thank myself for that. Otherwise, I would have missed out on a memorable experience. It was indeed a wonderful experience being away from all the hectic day-to-day activities and enjoying oneself like a free bird with a bunch of cool ladies! I loved every moment of my trip doing various activities like parasailing, undersea walking, playing or just dancing, which, I must add, were just a few of the activities we indulged in. The mesmerizing performance at the Alcazar show is one that will linger for a long time and one that will be hard to forget. The trip offered me a chance to make new friends and I returned with loads of memories of time spent with them. I would like to thank India Club and Cox and King travels for arranging this amazing trip and I am

New Year’s eve of a very special kind BORED with the usual fireworks display on most New Year’s eve, we decided to take a chance to ring in 2018 with our home away from home “India ClubDubai”. The result was a complete fun-filled evening for my kids and the much-needed quality time with my spouse. Needless to say, the seating, F&B as well as entertainment arrangements were above our expectations. However, it was the hospital-

ity of each and every member of the India Club crew that made our evening. Not only were our children in a familiar, kid-friendly and safe environment but we also shook a leg or two with the foot-taping tunes of the DJ for the night who did a splendid job of keeping all at the event completely entertained. All is all, it was a fantastic evening with my family and a great way to bring in the New Year. Mrs S. Ferrao Membership No. 5301

Food for thought ‘Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot’ ---Clarence Thomas ALTHOUGH the term dinning generally refers to the

act of eating, over the years, it has become a means of socializing and conducting business. Your table manners can perhaps influence others’ perceptions of you. Nobody could have emphasized this better than Kaveeta of KGPiee Etiquette Enhancers. Indian Club's two-part ‘Coffee Evenings’ for us ladies on dining etiquette were enriching and informative. We were given an insight into setting the table for formal and informal meals, the tools of the table, eating tricky foods and the nuances between American and Continental styles. We were also given a brief on how eating mannerisms vary across cultures. For instance, did you know that making slurping noises is encouraged in the Chinese culture? Through attending Kaveeta’s sessions and practicing the skills that I took away, dining has now become a more delightful experience. Thank you, India Club, for organizing such an event and I look forward to attending many more! Mamta Rohra Membership No 3823

SOCIAL WHIRL

OH WHAT A NIGHT! It was an epic night. The atmosphere was buzzing with good vibes allaround and just the right amount of mayhem to bring in the New Year!

I Vasu Shroff, Sunil Pathak, Sudeep Gupta and Bharat Chachara with their lovely ladies get set to ring in the New Year at the Club.

All the right moves.... A section of the crowd dance the night away.

DJ Ash Mac spins the tables for what proved to be a night of fun and dancing.

They came with their dancing shoes to usher in the New Year and danced till the wee hours of the morning.

They all came wearing the right “hatitude”. Sunil Singh and Shubha Singh.

INDIA FEBRUARY 2018 CLUB

NDIA CLUB has always had an insatiable drive to outdo the festivities of the years past and make each party better than the previous one. This year’s New Year’s Eve party held at the club’s shamiana was no exception and the club ensured it was the most memorable yet. Members and their guests loosened their hip for the evening writhing to the beat of the popular DJ Ash Mac. The revelers had come with their dancing shoes and dance they did as they swayed on the dance floor at India Club to say goodbye to 2017 and ring in the New Year. Dubai’s popular club DJ, Ash Mac, made sure he kept the crowd rocking on the dance floor right from 9pm till the wee hours of 2018. At the stroke of midnight, the revelers surrounded with the warmth of family and friends marked the countdown to the New Year. The noise grew louder and the whistles and horns even more. A second after the clock struck 12, the New Year was brought in with a spray of snow even as confetti filled the air, balloons dropped from above and party poppers were broken. The midnight hour was a very special moment for all. As the clock approached midnight, the lights dimmed and the countdown to ring in the New Year began. For all the revelers who had gathered at the club it was a night to remember. A night that saw DJ Ash Mac keeping the crowd grooving with his never-ending, foot-tapping music. A New Year's raffle draw was held and two lucky winners walked home with the following prizes: Divya Chandani(guest) won the hotel stay (land package only) in Bangkok with a 2 nights and 3 days stay for one person. Sunita Ganwani (Membership No. 2705) won the return air ticket from Dubai-Azerbaijan-Dubai with a 3 nights and 4 days stay. Both prizes were sponsored by Cox & Kings. The event took place at the Club that was covered with a shamiyana. Special attractions of the night were the special lighting with laser effects and the décor for the new year’s celebrations. SMILING ALL THE WAY IN THE LAND OF SMILES When in Bangkok, can a massage be far behind?

P

ATTAYA is among Thailand’s top tourist destination. With its exotic sights, superb entertainment and shopping bargains, a visit to the famed beach city is hard to resist. Ans so it was that India Club organized its first ladies only trip to Pattaya and Bangkok from November 28 to December 4. Twenty three ladies signed up for the trip that proved to be a memorable one! Free of all family responsibilities meant the ladies would enjoy a carefree trip. And they did. They let themselves go and for eight days enjoyed themselves. The trip brought out the best in them and, thanks to the planning by Cox and Kings, Pattaya will forever be on their minds. When in Pattaya, the first outing was to take in the mesmerizing Alcazar Show. The show, performed by exceptionally talented artistes, is often compared to the famous Moulin Rouge show in Paris. The impressive display by the Lady Boys was mind blowing. The next day saw the group heading to Coral Island where they indulged themselves with water activities. Ladies who would have never attempted parasailing and under water activities, suddenly found the courage to do so. In fact, for some of them, it was on their bucket list! After sunset there was a gala dinner with a DJ night who belted out

Bollywood and popular Western numbers as the ladies took to the floor. On the third day, the ladies were transferred to Bangkok. A visit to the Golden Buddha and the Marble Temple was a must on the list of things to do which was followed by a tour of the city that’s known for its shopping malls, street markets, street food, temples and royal palaces The evening saw the some of the ladies opting for a massage by Lady Boys which proved to be a very unique experience. On Day 4 it was a trip to Safari World and live encounters with wild animals. During the safari the group came across rare and endangered species roaming freely in their natural habitat. And then it was entertainment all the way with the group enjoying a wide array of entertainment, such as the Dolphin Show, Sea Lion Show, Orangutan Boxing Show, Stunt Show and the Bird Show at the Marine Park. Day 5 was dedicated to what every woman loves to do: Shopping. And they shopped to Riding the waves on their heart’s content as they hopped a water scooter. from mall to mall. Every member of the travel group took back memories of fun-filled days. Such was the good times they had together that the planning for the next trip had begun even before the first trip ended!

All set for a 'wild' day at Safari World.

Nothing quite like fresh coconut water to refresh you.

INDIA FEBRUARY 2018 CLUB

T WAS a magical, unforgettable getaway from the bright city lights of Dubai to the Northern Lights of Norway and exploring the history and culture of the country’s two cities, Tromso and Oslo. It was a dream five-day vacation (from January 25 to January 29) for 50 India Club members, many of who had listed the Northern Lights and the country on their bucket list. To see their dream come true was beyond their wildest imagination. The group not only chased the spectacular Northern Lights despite the biting cold, but also took in the sights in cities of Tromsø and Oslo. Some of the activities that they indulged in was planned in advance and mapped out. Planning a trip is a surefire strategy that allows you to get the best of the places you are visiting. Tromso, the largest city of Northern Norway, is famed for being the best viewing point for the dazzling and colourful Northern Lights that ripple across the sky and light up the nighttime sky. It is also a major cultural hub with an ideal mix of

modern activities, a vibrant nightlife and any number of places that offer a taste of the local food. The 5-strong group had a whale of a time indulging in a number of activities including a snowmobile safari, an artic cruise during which time they witnessed the spectacular Northern Lights dancing above the city. Braving the chill, the group lost themselves watching this miracle of nature and made their trip worthwhile. Next stop was Oslo, the capital and the most populous city of Norway with a rich history that dates back to over 1,000 years. According to Lonely Planet Oslo is “surrounded by mountains and the sea.” And “this compact, cultured, caring and fun city is Europe's fastestgrowing capital, with a palpable sense of reinvention.” It is here that the group got a guided tour of the city, drinking in the sights and its rich cultural heritage. It was an incredible escape for the India Club family and one that they will remember for a very long time. www.indiaclubdubai.com

HE clear waters, a spectacular coastline with the towering mountain ranges as the backdrop is what makes Musandam Dibba one of the region’s most beautiful places to visit. On November 24, 47 members of the India club, along with their family and friends, set out for a fun-filled day-longpicnic to Musandam organized by the club. The group travelled by bus in air-conditioned comfort and on arriving in Dibba boarded a wooden dhow for a cruise down the jagged coastline. As they drank in the sights during the 90-minutes cruise, the group was treated every kind of refreshments, including water, tea, soft drinks and coffee with a variety of fruits for the asking. On their return, it was time to take the speed boats and head for the beach. Along the way they could see the famous Hajjar mountains, the stone house and the Fisherman’s Village. Such was the draw of the speed boat and banana boat rides, that many opted to for more than one trip. A delicious buffet lunch with Indian dishes was then served before the group boarded the dhow for their return home. Enroute they stopped to visit the lime stone (White Rock) coral area with its awesome caves. It was a cruise to remember as the group soaked up the stunning views of hidden bays, caves and mountains.

Philip Cernik is given a warm welcome to the Club prior to his talk on why expats here should draw up a Will.

WHY YOU SHOULD WRITE A WILL. NOW.

Y

OU MAY be young, healthy, hard-working and perhaps you have managed to save prudentially as well, investing all your financial resources wisely with a high-level approach towards a happy retirement. But no one knows what tomorrow holds. Which is why the immediate drawing up of your Will according to your wishes cannot be emphasized enough. To many, a last Will and testament, is the last thing on their mind and a decision to get one done is constantly being put off. But do remember, you risk everything if you do not have a Will in place, especially for non-Muslim expats in the UAE. India Club, in association with Friends Provident International, organized a talk on will planning, titled “A Matter of Life and Death And Will Planning on November 11. Given the importance of the talk it was natural that the turnout was big. Over 175 people turned up to

listen to the guest speaker Philip Cernik, CMO of Friends Provident International speak on the subject. With over 32 years of experience in the insurance and financial services industries, Philip has worked in roles across the UK, Europe and the Middle East and in international markets including Asia, Latin America, Middle East, Europe and the Far East. He has worked for international insurance life companies, brokers, fund managers and he has also run his own consulting business. Philips highlighted the importance of Will planning, why it should be done and its implications in the absence of one. Having a Will in place no matter what your age will give you peace mind knowing that your hard-earned money and other assets will go the people you love the most. To not do so would mean not only losing everything you have but also leaving behind a worried family with all your assets tangled up in probate.

The turnout for the talk on why one should draw up a Will was huge with over 175 people turning up.
