The skill of

backward recitation

ujan Gururaj, born on October 5, 2012, is an enthusiastic boy with a special interest in spoken English and vocabulary. He is a 4th grade student of Seshadripuram Primary School, Yelahanka in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He has a special talent of reverse spelling and pronouncing English words. He can also pronounce sentences backwards. He has received an appreciation from the India Book of Records for spelling and pronouncing words backwards and speaking sentences backwards. Apart from English literature, this boy’s other interests include swimming and skating. He has a very flexible body and is a quick learner with a very inquisitive mind. He has also shown exemplary performance in the English Olympiad and has won a couple of awards too. He is a child who always prefers outdoor games and fun activities. A self learner who is quick to learn any new skill, he has acquired most of the skills with minimal or no external assistance. He is a fearless child who displays difficult physical stunts effortlessly. He is from a nuclear family of four members. His father, Sachin Gururaj and Mother Sujatha Gururaj, who are working professionals, are thrilled to discover Sujan’s unique capability of speaking words and sentences backwards. They hope to encourage him and further enhance his skills by giving him adequate training. Their elder son, Samith Gururaj, also a student of Seshadripuram High School, Yelahanka, Bengaluru, encourages and motivates his younger brother. The whole family is confident that Sujan will realize his full potential and achieve greater heights, hopefully in English literature.

Sujan is very fond of video games, especially Minecraft. He is a foodie and also loves coffee. He has a huge collection of toy cars and board games and is fond of spending time with children younger to him. He is a voracious reader. He is very honest and does not shy away from accepting his mistakes. He is extremely fond of pets also. “These days he loves to watch Japanese and Korean cartoon programmes with great interest,” tells his father. Sujan’s father’s message to other parents is to encourage and motivate children with special abilities and not to give importance only to academics. He himself came to know about the special ability of Sujan, when his elder son pointed out at the dinner table that “Sujan can spell out any word backwards”. They tested this unique quality and were surprised with the outcome. Sujan got the IBR appreciation for spelling 44 words backwards; pronouncing 25 words backwards and speaking 6 sentences backwards, at the age of 9 years, 4 months and 10 days.
