LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

We Made It Through Year-End Once Again!!

The increased intensity around selling, the thousands of hours implementing new clients, the setup of benefits packages to prepare for online open enrollment and the millions of client communications from our service teams have all been completed.

I have said this consistently, but the work we do isn’t always visible or the most hyped in the marketplace. However, these services we provide are crucial to the clients that put their trust in us; and I want to congratulate all of you that have grown and evolved to meet these changing needs.

We offer a serious foundational element to every organization we support and even the government agencies rely on us more than ever!

Spring Summit

Over 400 of the leading experts in the Payroll Industry will be attending the Spring Summit in Las Vegas, NV, March 13th – 15th. The Planning Committee, led this year by Matt Vaadi with guHRoo, has done a fantastic job of having multiple learning tracks and hiring world renowned keynote speakers, including legendary renowned hotelier, known for some of the best-known service in the world, former President of Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, Horst Schulz and Marcus Sheridan the creator of “They Ask You Answer” will return to conduct sessions.

Government Affairs

We continue to engage in Government Affairs with an intensity not seen before in IPPA’s history and together with our friends at TPG have created a joint task force to create an even greater impact. We are getting better and better each day at how we can monitor, provide feedback and influence legislation that is affecting our industry. We have learned that early action is key to engagement, and we are blessed as an association to have Bridget Escobar and Lori Brown who continue to invest their time and resources to focus on this key area for all of us. Please extend a personal thank-you for me when you interact with them and be sure to tune into our updates on relevant topics.

In Closing

I continue to be grateful to IPPA’s Founders for building an organization that provides knowledge and the financial strength to help advance our great industry. It is so awesome to see the maturing of our members Leadership teams, Sales & Marketing engines, Professional Services and Operations teams. So much growth and so much enterprise value is being created by this association and our members.

This is being noticed and we have seen an influx of new members as a result. People want to be like us. They want to learn and they want to grow.

Thank-you for all you do to make IPPA great and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Spring

Greetings,

Membership Update

JD Mulliken, Paytime Harrisburg

What can I say, this past year-end has been a whirlwind and now that the holidays are behind us, we’re gearing up for our biggest event of the year, the Spring Summit. This event is taking place at Ceasars Palace in fabulous Las Vegas, March 13-15. Our theme for this conference is “The Gold Standard” as we truly believe this conference is the benchmark in our industry. It seems that with changing legislation there is never ending compliance requirements that we need to keep up with. I have noticed over the last couple of years that with the growing complexities of running a payroll company the M&A activity as well as the need to outsource components of our business change.

This year’s webinar series started strong and we expect to continue this trend throughout the year. We’re going to try something new and make a few of the webinars we host available publicly - advertising them on our socials for those not already part of our great organization. This is to show the value of IPPA; and when these are published, we will ask that you share with your

colleagues that are not currently part of IPPA. We want to continue to provide educational webinars for our members and are always looking for interesting content and speakers. We still have some spots available for webinars this year, if you have any suggestions, please email ippa@dcikansascity.com.

In the coming weeks we will be sunsetting, IPPA’s Connected Community platform (HigherLogic), and introducing a listserv that will be formed around the same groups we have established. We hope that this drives engagement and interaction within our IPPA community by easy-to-use access to interact with your peers on a regular basis. More information to come about the launch at a later date.

Being an IPPA member brings many benefits to you and your organization. For starters our organization represents over $200 billion in wages processed annually from companies at all different stages of their business. We offer inperson conferences and networking events, webinars and provide other resources throughout the year. Since

we are all in the payroll industry and must adhere to the same set of federal and state tax rules and regulations, the IPPA commits a portion of your membership dollars to reviewing and staying current on the latest government affairs; and allocating those resources to represent our organization and its members at the highest level.

If you have any suggestions or would like to submit topics or articles for future editions, please email ippa@ dci-kansascity.com. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Vegas!!

Allied Partner Update

JD

Paytime Harrisburg

To our Allied Members,

This year’s Spring Summit looks like it’s going to be great. We are sold out of booths in the exhibit hall with a record 70 sponsor companies attending! We are excited to see all of our vendor partners and are extremely grateful for your support. One of the highlights of our inperson events, for me, is walking around the vendor hall and learning about our vendor members and what makes their company unique.

As IPPA continues to grow, we appreciate all our vendor partners who have been with us for many years. This past year we have seen continued growth within our organization and I want to thank our 25 new members for choosing to be

part of the IPPA. You can find the list of IPPA Vendor Members on ippa.net by clicking here. I’m looking forward to connecting with you all in Vegas!

Our webinar series is off to a great start this year. Some of our webinars will be made public to attract new members and showcase just one of the many benefits of IPPA. We are always looking for ways to provide additional value to our members. If you have ideas for webinar topics, would like to be included in a webinar series, or have topic ideas for our quarterly magazine Payroll News please reach out to ippa@ dci-kansascity.com and we would be happy to connect with you.

Community Connections Fuel Central Texas Member’s Growth for Nearly 30 Years

TheBaese family has deep roots in the Hill Country of Central Texas. Arlon Baese started his payroll company, Hill Country Payroll (HCP), in New Braunfels in 1995, concentrating mainly in the surrounding San Antonio market. Fast forward nearly 30 years later and Arlon’s sons, Writ, Coby and Cale, continue the legacy as second generation payroll owners. Hill Country Payroll may have widened its geography some since then, but the next gen owners still place the highest priority on community service to support those they serve.

“All three of us are very active in the communities we live and work in,” said owner Writ Baese. “Our best marketing tool is being involved in community organizations and supporting local causes. That’s how most of our referrals come about. We enjoy giving back and it’s a win-win for the business and everyone else involved.”

Writ was the first sibling to join his father in his payroll company in 2006, after spending 16 years in the Telecom industry upon graduation from the University of Texas at Austin.

“It was an opportunity for us to work together.”

Writ had remained in the Austin area after college and instead of moving back to his hometown and company headquarters in New Braunfels, he chose to grow the business from a new location in Round Rock. “Round Rock is a northern suburb of Austin and it gave us a presence and office there.” Writ is the only employee located in Round Rock and focuses on sales and marketing efforts.

When Arlon retired in 2010, Coby and Cale Baese joined Hill Country Payroll as owners. Coby lives in the New Braunfels area and Cale lives just south of Austin in Buda. They both work out of the New Braunfels office with the company’s 10 other employees.

Coby serves as HCP’s operations leader. His background in telecom operations is a perfect match for managing the evolving technology of the HCM industry. He also graduated from the University of Texas.

8

Cale, a graduate of Texas A&M, is an experienced IT and finance leader and is well-versed in solving complex client issues, developing custom reporting, and taking an active role in HCP’s sales and operations efforts.

Johnida Kiel serves as the company’s Payroll Manager. Caitlyn Runge leads new client set up and training as the Implementation Manager, and Amanda Shipp is Tax Manager. Out of the company’s new office, the HCP team assists approximately 800 customers in a wide array of industries with a full suite of HCM services. Clients range from 1 to 600 employees in size.

After almost 30 years of leasing office space, Hill Country Payroll purchased its own building 15 months ago in New Braunfels. “That was a big investment in the community and we are proud of our commitment to our team and customers,” Writ stated. “It is a new space designed specifically for our needs and a nice place employees can come to work and feel comfortable in every day.”

The Baeses are active members of the Austin, Round Rock, New Braunfels and Kyle Area Chambers

of Commerce. They also have served on many boards and commissions within their communities.

“We’ve noticed over the years that our competitors come to these local groups for a while but don’t stay,” Writ continued. “We’re still here, actively participating for the long game to build long term relationships within our communities.”

With Coby and Cale heavily involved in the IT and operations of the business, Writ is more often the face of HCP in industry and community relations as HCP’s client development lead. Interestingly, he served as City of Round Rock Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem from 2015-2021. Most recently, Writ received the Citizen of the Year award from the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce in 2023. The Chamber also honored Hill Country Payroll as Small Business of the Year in 2017.

Writ, Coby and Cale also support their industry communities, including local HR associations. HCP is also a member of The Payroll Group where Writ currently serves on the Board of Directors.

A new member of IPPA, Hill Country Payroll joined in July 2023 and attended the Owner’s Conference with plans to attend the upcoming Spring Summit in March in Las Vegas.

“We already knew lots of folks in IPPA and look forward to making many new contacts,” Writ said. “We are excited to be members of IPPA. There are so many incredible companies involved in the organization and we look forward to learning and contributing.”

When we talked with Writ, HCP had just come out of its busiest time of the year and the owners were planning a team event to thank staff for their hard work at year-end and throughout January.

“During the month of January, we held fun gatherings to keep up morale called Winter Daze,” he explained. “It is something we started a few years back after stealing the idea from a friend in the business. Winter Daze is just a way to try to enjoy a minute during a super busy time.” Some Winter Daze events this year included bringing coffee or lunch into the office, playing gift card bingo, and treating the team to a clean car from a mobile detailer.

If he had to end with one thing about the business he appreciates most, Writ said he enjoys watching the evolution of technology and software development. “Although our core is still payroll and tax, there is such a stark comparison in what we can offer a client today as compared to 12 – 15 years ago. HR features and technology that was only available to the largest clients are now accessible for businesses with just a few employees.”
