9 Golden Lessons from the 2024 IPPA Spring Summit
A QUARTERLY MAGAZINE FOR INDEPENDENT PAYROLL PROVIDERS
Nine quotes from the IPPA Spring Summit provided evergreen leadership lessons.
“A vision is a beautiful dream we have. We need to have a destination in mind.” - Horst Schulze
There was no better speaker to set the stage for what excellence looks like than Horst Schulze, co-founder of the Ritz Carlton.
This association and event was a vision realized for many of the original members It was awesome to see so many of you there to be a part of the celebration. We took time to recognize the deep history of the association while casting a vision for the future. And guess what? The future is bright.

“People thought we were crazy for going fully web-based.”Steve Sarowitz
That seems crazy to us now, right? What will seem crazy to us in ten years?
It’s like Wayne Gretzky said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” Where is the puck going? Without doing research and being open-minded, we won’t know.
LESSON: Spend time being professionally curious. Be open-minded to where the industry is going
“Coming to Vegas to network is like going to Cheesecake Factory to work out. You can do it, but you will probably be the only one.” - Matt Vaadi
People come to the IPPA Spring Summit for two primary reasonslearning and networking. The event offered these things in spades (pun intended). We had plenty of time to connect between sessions and a world-class lineup of speakers I am always amazed at how open and willing to share everyone is.

LESSON: Be intentional. If you are on a diet, there is always an option on the menu, you just have to stay disciplined
“You are in charge of your atmosphere.” - Horst Schulze
Whether it is back at yo you are at the Spring S your environment
Let’s all be intentional w and families to create a where others can thrive
LESSON: Take control environment. Don’t let or circumstances aroun your thoughts and acti

“
Don’t practice on your customers.” - Marcus Sheridan
Marcus shined a light on the very obvious thing we all do - we practice on our customers! Whether it’s sales, customer service, finance, or simply our receptionist when someone walks in the door, we could all use more practice
The most effective way to practice is to role play Teams are not doing enough role play because they find it to be uncomfortable or they “don’t have the time”.
LESSON: It takes discomfort to get comfortable. Be disciplined enough to create internal discomfort before interacting with clients and potential clients
“Hiring is the worst and most expensive way to solve a capacity problem.” - Nick Sonnenberg
Oooooh boy This one hit me right between the eyes.
When you add people, communication exponentially more complicated. You te to have large dips in productivity while everyone focuses on training and onbo the new hire It takes a long time (if eve that productivity to increase.

LESSON: Look at how you can get more efficient before looking to hire What can you automate, delegate, or delete to create more bandwidth for your team?
“People have been scared of every major technological advancement in history” - Marcus Sheridan

Whether it was fire, electricity, the car, or AI, people have always deemed technological advancements “the devil”
AI and automation are the hot things right now and there is good reason How will you adapt? Will you curse or leverage technology?
LESSON: Lean into technology. Use AI and automation as your superpower. Don’t wish you would have started sooner
“You can’t invest too much in technology and customer service.” - Steve Sarowitz
This perfectly summarizes where we are headed as an industry We must to invest in our tech stack and au but people still want to do busine people.
Don’t forget to continue to invest human relationships that make a companies special
LESSON: He nailed it. No notes.
“This steak is fantastic.” - C

I had a fantastic time surrounded by old friends and new ones I hope to see you all at the Owner’s Retreat in September or Vegas next year
LESSON: Relationships over everything Take the time to invest in them and nurture them throughout the year so when you get together you can enjoy the time.
Thank you for allowing me to serve the association.
