Carina: the Keel Creative Work, Visual and Poetic Dream or Inspiration

That of a dream is all but a wonder. It is there then it is gone. If you are lucky enough to catch it you can tell the world but to what avail. It is that of a whisp of memory that floats like the leaves in an autumn breeze. A word you speak falls on deaf ears for it is nothing but a tale for them to hear. They laugh and mock a single word yet inside they know the same. Now that of a dream is all but a nightmare. For you alone can experience the wonders. That of fantastical desires and raging power. For you control the sights before you. It is the fuel for imagination. We see what we feel so the question is, what dreams will you create? It doesn't have to end with you.

To Posit Reproach from a Place of Ignorance

Behind the fake-us, behind the plastic plant that puts carbon in our lungs by its very means of production if not its idle existence, behind the thing that is the soot representation of the thing that would help us but as it stands in a shabby rattan basket, the little ripples of what I thought this would all be like still zip into and out of view. This is not what we were led to believe would happen. This is not the scene where the youth unite their powers with fabulous costume jewelry and kick some corporate suit right in the greedsack. This is not the bit where we unmask the lame old baddie who is clearly wearing a bad hood and a dollar store horror mask. This is the bit right after, where the end credit music has failed to play and the old white dude who has always been the villain just stands there and says, “yeah, fine, it was me. It is me. What you going to do about it? You want to buy in on the condos or not?”

Where is home

"Home was a coffee table pushed up against the couch with a blanket draped over it to make a secret hide away.

Home was pink lemonade, Bird watching at six in the morning, Porcelain figurines and quilted blankets.

Home was sleeping on the floor for four months. A room once filled with bright colors and childhood toys, now lies empty and barren. Home was a carpet floor and box kingdoms with swords made from paper towel rolls.

Home was a flower bed on the side of the house given to the family by my grandma before she passed away. Home was the month of December I spent laying down on the back porch looking up at the stars, Or the summer I spent every day watching the sun kiss the horizon.

Home was a pair of summer green eyes And a wicked smile.

Calloused hands that painted such beautiful lies. Home was an ocean of tears

And nights spent sleeping on the couch Or not sleeping at all.

Home was once a broken record stuck on repeat. A failed attempt at normalcy. A botched scene from "I Love Lucy".

Suddenly Home was 125miles away. Packed up, shoved in a trunk, all in one day. Home was lost, out of reach. Nothing left but a cold room in the middle of nowhere. The sunsets were lackluster. The stars weren't as bright. This wasn't home at all. This was lonely and painful. A mockery of what once was.

It was new. It meant new friends, With new memories to make And places to explore. Adventures to go on, Lessons to learn, Opportunities to grab ahold of. It was still lonely, yes, but it was the sound of laughter, Curly brown hair, Neon green with an artsy aesthetic, Magic cards, And skittles in a vending machine. This was home now.

Home is sitting on top of a Santa Fe train. Shadows of oak trees, illuminated by orange street lamps. Slight brushes of the hand, and jokes being made. Pizza hut wings and monster energy drinks. Car rides to the lake after rehearsal, And a faded blue bridge with turtles underneath.

Home, as of late, has not been as recognizable as it once was. It's difficult to see, Difficult to find my way back.

It isn't all there, it's like an unfinished puzzle that I've been slamming and gluing other random pieces that don't fit just to fill the empty space.

When I'm asked what Home is I speak of only the one 125miles away, But I know now that Home is wherever I am. It is the people I meet, The memories I make, The places I've slept, And the roads I've travelled down. Home is far away yes, But Home is also nearby. Home can be anything or anyone. Where is home for you?"

Quest for Confidence

Eli had an anxiety attack that put him in a coma. He woke up in a dark barren area. He smelled smoke and followed the smell to investigate. He saw a village on fire. Every building was up in flames, many people were running out of these burning buildings. He saw an old man and asked, “What happened here?” The old man was out of breath; he struggled to answer. Eli saw a little girl and asked her what happened. She told him that the Blue Soldier came. Eli was confused and didn’t understand what she’s talking about. The villagers sat around a fire trying to figure out who made it out. Eli was confused about where he was and why all of this happened. Suddenly, a large man with a gold cane and a large diamond handle stood up, and everyone went silent. The Villagers recognized him as the Mayor. He recognized Eli because they are inside his head. He called to him, “Eli?” Eli was confused on how the man knows him. The large man explained that the Blue Soldier that burned their village is Eli’s anxiety, and that he has become too powerful. “What do you mean too powerful?” Asked Eli. The Mayor went on to explain that Confidence, the large white lion, protects them from the soldier, but now the Blue Soldier has a large army, and now Confidence is locked away in the back of his mind. The Mayor also explained that Eli was the only one who could free the lion and defeat the Blue Army. Eli could hear his heart beating; he asked if anyone else can do this task. The Mayor, with an irritated look in his eye, banged the cane which made a loud sound. “Only you can free us of the Blue Army,” he said with frustration. He explained that this was Eli’s head; he could do anything.

Nothing was impossible. “Now, be off on your quest unless you want your mother to keep crying”. Suddenly, the sound of Eli’s Mom weeping over son was heard by everyone. “Alright, alright! I'll go.” He said as a pink path appeared. “This path will take you to the Lion,” the Mayor explained. Eli took a deep breath and started walking. Eli felt lonely and bored. All of a sudden, a bright light manifested next to him. This light was giving off a lot wind, enough to make Eli’s dreads shake. He stopped to see what to see what was happening. As fast as it started was

as fast as it stopped. A Pitbull with blue and green fur with white eyes came stumbling out of the light. Eli was freaked out by the strange dog that just appeared in front and began to make a face of curiosity. The dog looked at Eli and said, “What? You’ve never seen a dog before?” Eli was now surprised at the fact that this dog just came out of an orb of light was talking. “You can talk?” asked Eli. “Uhhhh, yeah. That’s what you made me to do.” “I made you?” Eli asked in confusion, “Yeah, you felt lonely, so you made me. Do you not know how your imagination works? Anyway, I’m Iris. I here to keep you company on this little quest you're on.” Eli and Iris kept following the pink trail. Iris looked at Eli and said, “Let’s get one thing straight. I may be a dog, but don’t pet me, and don’t even think about using baby talk ” Eli nodded, and they continued to walk.

They followed the pink trail until it led to a rickety bridge with a bottomless pit below it. Eli stopped and said, “I can’t do this.” Iris tilted his head and said, “What you mean you can’t do this? You’re halfway there! You're going to cross that bridge, or I’m going to start biting.” Eli, consumed in his fear of heights, tried to turn and run. Iris bit his pant leg, tripping him. Iris started dragging him across the bridge. Eli screamed trying to make him stop, but it didn’t work.

The scream Eli let out was heard by nearby Blue Soldiers. The Soldiers were on patrol and started going toward where they heard the scream. “See that wasn’t so bad?” said Iris as he released his pant leg. Then, the sound of footsteps started to surround them. “Freeze! Hands above your head!” yelled the Blue Soldiers as they pointed their blue guns with blinding flashlights and red lasers at their heads. Eli and Iris cooperated, and the Blue Soldiers put a bag on each of their heads and tied them up.

Snøw Gløbe

I nø lønger crave the beauty of snøw gløbes, før I am trapped in øne nøw.

And they are nøt beautiful. The glitter falls like daggers in my back, every unwarranted cømment, every unwanted advance, anøther stab at my safety. My wørld grøws smaller, as I hide in places I dø nøt fit. The glass walls sufføcate. They threaten tø shatter. Please leave me aløne I beg, they dø nøt listen. There is nø søund in the gløbes, ønly the søft music playing øutside, hiding my cries.

Pumpkin Muffin Recipe

Ingredients

· 2 cups/260 grams all-purpose flour

· ½ cup granulated sugar

· 1 tsp. baking powder

· ½ or less tsp. salt

· 1 cup whole milk

· 1 tsp. vanilla extract

· 1 large egg

· 4 Tbsp. melted butter (½ stick) or 4 Tbsp. coconut oil

· 12 oz of can pumpkin

Tools

·

2 mixing bowls

· 1 microwave safe bowl

· A 1 cup measuring cup and a ½ measuring cup

·

1 measuring tablespoon

· 1 measuring teaspoon

· 1 or 2 muffin pans

· 1 spoon or rubber spatula to help pour the batter and/or scoop the pumpkin

·

1 oven or mini muffin cooker

· 1 whisk

Directions

Step 1: Be sure to gather all the ingredients to be on the same kitchen counter, then thoroughly grease the muffin pan, or the mini muffin cooker if it is nonstick with butter or coconut oil.

Step 2: Preheat the oven to 400 F or plug in and turn on the mini muffin cooker.

Step 3: In one bowl, carefully combine the flour, baking powder, and salt with the whisk.

Step 4: Heat the butter or coconut oil in a microwave bowl for about 1 minute then let it cool down but not solidify.

Step 5: Beat the eggs in a separate bowl using the whisk, after that carefully mix in the sugar, milk, vanilla, and pumpkin.

Step 5: Make sure that the butter or coconut oil is warm but not hot before carefully stirring it into the egg-milkvanilla-pumpkin mixture, adding only a little bit at a time but gradually increasing the amount until it’s all in the mixture.

Step 6: Carefully stir the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients, but don’t mix the ingredients too much, about 1 minute of mixing is the most it will need.

Step 7: Carefully pour the batter into the muffin pans or the mini muffin maker.

Step 8: Cook the muffins for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Step 9: Let the muffins cool off a few minutes before serving and enjoy.

Puppis: the Deck Recent & Upcoming Events

The ICC Theatre Department is proud to announce their upcoming production, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, will go up in the William Inge Theatre on Friday, December 6th at 7:00 pm, Saturday, December 7th at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, December 8th at 2:00 pm. Regarding the production, director Paul Molnar: “The Glass Menagerie was the first play I did in college. I played the Gentleman Caller. Since then I have been always wanted to direct it. Now 25 years later I have that opportunity. The richness of Williams' language, the depth to his characters, and the human struggle they face, makes this a privilege to work on. The great works of literature young actors get to explore will craft their minds, their hearts, and their souls. I hope to produce a compelling staging of an American Classic.”
