FOREWORD

The art presented in Ina Lou sensitizes viewers to the experiences of Maria Madeira as she reconnects, after three decades of separation, with her homeland, Timor-Leste. Madeira’s return to Timor-Leste in 2000 continues to shape her artistic practice as she adapts and innovates with locally available painting materials. In addition to oils, acrylics and pastels, Madeira’s oevuer is created with betel-nut spittle, ground stones and riverbed ochres, human hair and the hand spun cotton threads-drawn from the local customary handwoven textiles (tais). This eclectic array of materials is employed by Madeira to create both a physically and metaphorically nuanced and textural artworks.

Many of the works exhibited in Ina Lou are layered depictions of lived and felt experiences.

‘Hau raan fakar fatin’ is Madeira’s offering to ‘the blood spilt earth – the place of my birth’– an abstracted quadriptych representation of her homeland executed in layers of ground river rock from her home area of Ermera. Layered with the local history, her nation’s history and her personal journey Hau raan fakar fatin alludes to the eternal bonds, felt by the Timorese to their natal homelands. The intensity of colour, texture and layers forges distinctive impressions of place and the ongoing process of ‘finding a place’ that informs Madeira’s experience and art practice.

Other works in Ina Lou reflect on historical events during Timor’s recent turbulent history, such as Ina Lou and The Dream Goes On and relate the grueling process of reconciling a horrific past with a hopeful future. However, Madeira’s more personal reflective impressionistic works convey something of her personal perspective as both an insider and outside of her own culture and country of origin. This position, although at times difficult to traverse, enables her art to respond to the process of forging new identity – both as a Timorese woman returning to her homeland and form the broader perspective as this young nation, Timor-Leste, seeks to assert a new identity.

Foremother’s Fingerprints references Madeira’s engagement with other Timorese women - textile weaver’s from the inland mountainous community of Bobonaro, where the weaver’s told Madeira how they identify each other’s woven cloth, by their ‘fingerprints’ left on each tais – a metaphor for stylistic and technical individuality. It seems that Madeira has now returned to her place of origin to put her definitive ‘fingerprint’ on the nascent contemporary visual art movement in Timor-Leste.

Madeira stands out singularly as the only Timorese female visual artist pursuing a dedicated visual art practice at this time – a significant position deserving of respect.

KATA PENGANTAR

Seni yang disajikan di Ina Lou menimbulkan kepekaan pecinta seni, saat menghubungkan Maria Madeira dengan Tanah Airnya Timor Leste setelah tiga dekade berpisah. Maria Madeira kembali ke Timor-Leste pada tahun 2000 terus mempertajam praktek artistiknya saat ia beradaptasi dan berinovasi dengan bahan lukisan yang tersedia secara lokal.

Seluruh hasil karya selain minyak, akrilik dan pastel, Madeira juga mengunakan ludah sirih-pinang, batu tanah ditepi sungai, rambut manusia, dan benang timbul ditenun tradisional (tais). Bermacam-macam bahan ini dipakai oleh Madeira untuk membuat suatu kreasi, baik secara fisik maupun kiasan yang bernuansa karya seni yang bertekstur.

Banyak dari karya-karya yang dipamerkan di Ina Lou adalah penggambaran berlapis pengalaman hidup yang dirasakannya. ‘Hau raan fakar fatin’ adalah suatu persembahan Madeira untuk ‘tanah tumpah darahnya’ – representasi quadriptych disarikan dari tanah airnya dibuat dalam lapisan batuan sungai dan dari tanah daerah asalnya di Ermera.

Dengan sejarah lokal yang beraneka ragam, sejarah bangsanya dan perjalanan pribadinya, Hau raan fakar fatin menyinggung tentang ikatan abadi orang Timor Leste terhadap tanah kelahirannya. Intensitas warna, tekstur dan lapisan meninbulkan kesan khas tempat dan proses yang sedang berlangsung. ‘untuk menemukan suatu tempat’ yang menginformasikan tentang pengalaman Madeira dan praktek seninya.

Karya-karya lainnya di Ina Lou merefleksikan gejolak-gejolak yang terjadi di Timor Leste barubaru ini. seperti Ina Lou dan Dream Goes On yang

berhubungan dengan proses rekonsiliasi masa lalu yang mengerikan dan masa depan yang penuh harapan. Namun, karya impresionis reflektif Madeira menyampaikan sesuatu dari perspetif pribadinya sekaligus sebagai orang dalam dan orang luar terhadap budaya dan bangsanya sendiri. Posisi ini, meskipun kadang-kadang sulit untuk melintasi, namun memungkinkan seninya untuk menjawab terhadap proses penempaan identitas baru – baik sebagai wanita Timor yang kembali ke tanah airnya dan dari perspektif yang lebih luas sebagai bangsa yang muda, Timor-Leste, berusaha untuk mencari identitas baru.

Ciri khas buatan tangannya sendiri menunjukan keterlibatan Madeira dengan kaumnya-penenunpenenun dari masyarakat pegunungan di Bobonaro, dimana mereka memberitahukan kepada Madeira bagaimana dapat mengetahui hasil karya tangannya masing-masing yang ditinggalkan disetiap lembar kain tenun – suatu metafora untuk gaya dan teknis individual. Tampaknya Madeira sekarang kembali ketempat asalnya untuk meletakan sidik jarinya secara difinitif dalam gerakan seni komtemporer visual yang baru lahir di Timor Leste. Madeira berdiri tunggal sebagai satu-satunya seniwati visual Timor leste yang mengejar praktek seni visual pada saat ini – suatu kedudukan yang pantas untuk dihormati.

BORROW MEMORY FROM THE EAST

I might be wondering, as to what is the form of Timor-Leste contemporary art? As a citizen of Indonesia, admittedly I did not know much about the situation of contemporary art in the country that recognized its sovereignty status on May 20, 2002. What will be discussed by Maria Madeira via her works as well as how the context of her works that can be appreciated by the art public in Jakarta?

When I first saw a glimpse of the works that Maria offered to be exhibited in Ina Lou (Dear Mother Earth), there are some impressions that I captured. First, and in my opinion the most powerful impression, is about memory. Second, is the effect of feminism, which can be clearly understood through the exhibition’s header in the Indonesian language, literally meaning Ibu Pertiwi.

The third impression was her criticism of the social and political life, which she tries to put as the ideological perspective amplifying her works.

All her works, both paintings and installations are based on these three subject matters.

A personal recollection of history becomes a very important thing to read in Maria Madeira’s exhibition process, because it is a creative resource for her work. Personally, I prefer to call it as “borrowing memories”. Maria on one hand becomes a storyteller about Timor mother earth for those uninitiated; and on the other hand, she becomes a reader or listener over the historical

development of Timorese culture. The thing that makes this issue interesting is that the history told

by Maria is a product of cultural colonialism that can still be found today. This is why, despite her extensive use of traditional symbols, the context in which they are presented remains a global issue.

Maria Madeira is in fact a woman who has experienced an exodus. A year after Indonesia’s military annexation of East Timor (later became the province of East Timor), she was evacuated

by Portuguese Air Force, before finally immigrated to Australia with her family in 1983. This background has apparently made such a strong impression on her, that we can feel and sense her longing in this exhibition. Maria tried to display and returning the memories of Timor in her work through the use of natural resources as well as traditional motifs of Timor. She, who attended the art school with Western style in Australia, is giving a strong influence in the reinterpretation of the cultural forms of Timor-Leste. For her, the use of materials of this nature is not merely an aesthetic enhancer but has also become the means to communicate back to the mother earth that she can now trace back to. Those cultural memories then became the fuel that she used in the process of creating her works.

The next thing that appears clearly as a message in this exhibition is the attempt to break down the patriarchal culture, which is still covering

tight the social life in Timor-Leste. By Ina Lou she tried to invite and recall the existence of ‘mother earth’ that has resurfaced within the culture of East Timor. These efforts are not only limited to the exhibition’s header; Maria has also made contact with the lives of women weavers of the Timor’s traditional cloth known as Tais, as an attempt to push and improve their lives.

In a private conversation when we first met to discuss the exhibition, Maria shared her doubt that most Timorese people forget, that many wounded by armed conflict in Timor-Leste were women. Through art and culture, Maria strives to encourage the spirit of East Timorese women to become more independent. In the global context, the same topic appears on Doris Salcedo, recipient of the 9th Hiroshima Art Prize. Doris who lived and grew up in Colombia, where hundreds of people died and went missing as a result of the war, borrowing a gangster recall events she experienced or from the families of the victims.

With the same perspective in Maria’s work, we can see how the memories are then processed and elaborated in such a way that has become a masterpiece, which is not only critical but also has poetic value. That is, memory-memory is not slavishly served to encourage people to become sad or excessive sympathy.

The third is the question of social politics. Maria consciously borrows memories of socio-political tragedy in her works as an attempt to bring the

facts of what happened in Timor-Leste over the past few decades. Personally for me, this consciousness was a reverence for those who have nothing to fight for independence. In Indonesia’s own art discourse practice, it borrows memory as a resource for creative processes, which has been extensively done, as observed in artists such as FX Harsono, Tintin Wulia or Hafiz Rancajale, who often ‘borrow’ memories to be processed into critical works of art. FX Harsono for example, often share stories about the tragedy of the massacre in 1965, while Hafiz, borrowed memories from a group of community in Lambu, Bima, West Nusa Tenggara to recount the tragedy which killed three residents in 2012. In an approach that was more or less the same as Harsono and Hafiz, Maria Madeira was using her memory about Timor-Leste as a form of posturing to counter neglect attitudes of many tragedies that occurred in Timor Loro Sa’e.

Overall, this exhibition can be seen as a new way for Indonesia’s artists to get to know further what our relatives in Timor-Leste are working on.

What Maria Madeira takes from this exhibition will not only became the milestone for herself —as the first female artist of Timor-Leste to have a solo exhibition in Indonesia— but will also be an important historical resource to be appreciated by artists in Indonesia. What’s more, the theme that she brings is still relevant to our review in the context of Indonesia. Maria’s yearning to be heard in her hometown can be a representation of the

feelings of our brothers and sisters in the border areas which still lack or areas that are still prone to conflict. Through this exhibition, we can perhaps look to the East, and then borrow their memories as creative resources that can be developed together.

MEMINJAM INGATAN DARI TIMUR

Saya boleh jadi bertanya-tanya dalam hati, seperti apa bentuk seni rupa kontemporer dari Timor Leste? Sebagai warganegara Indonesia, harus diakui tidak banyak yang saya tahu tentang situasi seni kontemporer di Negara yang status kedaulatannya baru diakui pada 20 Mei 2002 tersebut. Apa yang akan dibicarakan oleh Maria Madeira lewat karya-karyanya serta bagaimana konteks karyanya dapat diapreasiasi oleh publik -di Jakarta?

Ketika pertama kali melihat secara sekilas karyakarya yang ditawarkan Maria untuk dipamerkan dalam Ina Lou (Ibu Pertiwi) ada beberapa kesan yang saya tangkap di dalamnya. Pertama dan yang menurut saya yang paling kuat adalah kesan tentang ingatan. Kedua adalah kesan feminism, yang dapat dipahami secara jelas melalui tajuk pameran yang dalam Bahasa Indonesia secara harfiah dapat diartikan sebagai Ibu Pertiwi. Kesan ketiga adalah kritiknya atas kehidupan sosial politik yang coba ia letakkan sebagai penguat perspektif ideologis kekaryaannya. Pada seluruh karyanya, baik lukisan maupun instalasi berdasar pada ketiga persoalan tersebut.

Sejarah atau ingatan personal menjadi suatu hal yang amat penting untuk dibaca dalam proses pameran Maria Madeira, karena hal tersebut merupakan sumber daya kreatif bagi karya-karyanya. Secara pribadi saya lebih suka menyebutnya dengan ‘meminjam ingatan’. Maria

di satu sisi menjadi penyaji cerita atas kenangankenangannya terhadap bumi pertiwi Timor untuk mereka yang belum mengenalnya, di sisi yang lain ia menjadi pembaca atau pendengar atas perkembangan sejarah budaya Timor. Yang menjadikan persoalan ini menarik adalah, sejarah yang diceritakan oleh Maria merupakan produk budaya kolonialisme yang masih dapat kita temui pada masa kini. Itu sebabnya, meskipun ia banyak menggunakan perlambang-perlambang tradisional, konteks yang disampaikan masih bersifat global.

Maria Madeira, sejatinya adalah seorang yang mengalami eksodus. Setahun setelah militer Indonesia melakukan aneksasi atas Timor Leste (kemudian menjadi Provinsi Timor Timur), ia diungsikan oleh Pasukan Udara Portugis, sebelum akhirnya bermigrasi ke Australia bersama keluarganya pada 1983. Latar belakang itu tampaknya membekas begitu kuat di dalam dirinya, sehingga kerinduannya menjejak pada seluruh karya yang ia tampilkan dalam pameran ini. Maria mencoba untuk menampilkan kembali ingatan-ingatan tentang Timor dalam karyanya melalui penggunaan sumber alam serta motif tradisional Timor. Sempat mengenyam pendidikan seni dengan gaya Barat di Australia, memberi pengaruh yang kuat bagi Maria dalam menginterpretasi ulang bentuk-bentuk budaya Timor. Baginya, penggunaan bahan-bahan alam ini bukan hanya sekedar penambah unsur

estetik melainkan juga menjadi sarana untuk berkomunikasi kembali dengan tanah pertiwi yang kini dapat ia jejak kembali. Ingatan-ingatannya atas budaya itu menjadi bahan bakar yang ia gunakan dalam proses penciptaan karya-karyanya.

Kemudian yang tampak dengan jelas sebagai pesan dalam pameran ini adalah upaya Maria untuk mendobrak budaya patriarki yang selama ini masih tebal membungkus kehidupan sosial di Timor Leste. Lewat Ina Lou ia berusaha untuk mengajak kita mengingat kembali keberadaan ‘ibu pertiwi’ yang selama ini telah membesarkan budaya Timor. Upaya ini tidak terbatas pada tajuk pameran saja, Maria juga melakukan kontak dengan kehidupan wanita-wanita penenun Tais, kain tradisional Timor sebagai upayanya untuk mendorong kehidupan wanita Timor ke arah yang lebih baik. Dalam perbincangan pribadi ketika pertama kali bertemu untuk membicarakan pameran ini, Maria berbagi kerisauannya bahwa sebagian orang lupa, bahwa yang paling terluka akibat konflik bersenjata di Timor adalah para wanita. Mereka harus merelakan suami dan anak mereka pergi bertempur atau hilang diculik.

Lewat seni dan budaya, Maria berupaya untuk mendorong semangat wanita-wanita Timor untuk menjadi lebih mandiri. Dalam konteks global, hal yang sama muncul pada diri Doris Salcedo, penerima Hiroshima Art Prize ke-9. Doris yang hidup dan besar di Kolombia, dimana ratusan orang tewas dan hilang akibat perang gangster,

meminjam ingatan akan peristiwa yang ia alami sendiri ataupun dari keluarga para korban.

Dengan perspektif yang sama dalam karya Maria, kita dapat menyaksikan bagaimana ingataningatan tersebut kemudian diolah dan dielaborasi sedemikian rupa sehingga ia menjadi sebuah karya yang bukan saja bersifat kritis namun juga memiliki nilai puitis di dalamnya. Artinya, ingataningatan tersebut tidak disajikan mentah-mentah untuk kemudian mendorong orang menjadi iba atau terenyuh secara berlebihan.

Yang ketiga adalah persoalan sosial politik. Maria dengan sadar meminjam ingatan-ingatan atas tragedi sosial politik di dalam karya-karyanya sebagai upaya untuk menghadirkan fakta atas apa yang terjadi di Timor Leste selama beberapa tahun belakangan. Namun bagi saya pribadi, kesadarannya ini menjadi sebuah bentuk penghormatan atas mereka yang telah tiada demi memperjuangkan kemerdekaan. Dalam wacana seni rupa Indonesia sendiri praktek meminjam ingatan sebagai sumber daya proses kreatif juga sudah banyak dilakukan, kita dapat menyebut nama FX Harsono, Tintin Wulia, atau Hafiz Rancajale sebagai perupa yang kerap ‘meminjam ingatan’ untuk diolah menjadi karya-karya seni yang berdifat kritis. FX Harsono misalnya kerap berbagi kisah tentang tragedi pembantaian pada 1965, sementara Hafiz meminjam ingatan sekelompok masyarakat di daerah Lambu, Bima, Nusa Tenggara Barat untuk menceritakan tragedi

yang menewaskan tiga orang warga pada 2012.

Dalam pendekatan yang kurang lebih sama seperti Harsono dan Hafiz, Maria Madeira pun menggunakan ingatannya akan bumi Timor Leste ini sebagai sebuah bentuk sikap untuk melawan sikap abai atas berbagai tragedi yang terjadi di bumi Lorosae.

Secara keseluruhan, pameran ini dapat menjadi awal baru bagi perupa Indonesia untuk mengenal lebih jauh apa yang sedang dikerjakan oleh saudara di Timor Leste. Apa yang dibawa oleh Maria Madeira dalam pameran ini bukan hanya menjadi batu penjuru bagi dirinya sendiri— seniman perempuan pertama Timor Leste yang berpameran di Indonesia—namun juga akan menjadi sumber daya sejarah yang penting untuk diapresisasi oleh perupa Indonesia. Terlebih lagi, tema yang ia bawakan masih relevan untuk kita telaah dalam konteks Indonesia. Kerinduan Maria akan kampung halamannya bisa jadi merupakan representasi perasaan dari saudara-saudara kita di daerah perbatasan yang masih kekurangan ataupun daerah yang masih rawan konflik. Lewat pameran ini mungkin kita dapat kemudian menengok ke Timur, untuk kemudian meminjam ingatan-ingatan mereka sebagai sebagai sumber daya kreatif yang dapat dikembangkan bersama.
