Publikasaun idane’e hetan kolaborasaun husi Timor Aid, ne’ebe hala’o servisu konaba peskiza ba Tais orijinal Bobonaro, liu husi xefe programa kultural: Rosália E. M. Soares.

A publicação do catálogo “Os Têxteis de Bobonaro” dá seguimento à iniciativa anteriormente lançada por esta Secretaria de Estado, de disponibilizar um conjunto de obras sobre a produção tradicional de têxteis dos 12 municípios e da Região Administrativa Especial de Oecusse, Ambeno (RAEOA) de Timor-Leste. Esta obra conta com a preciosa colaboração da Timor Aid, na pessoa da sua líder da equipa do programa da Cultura Rosália E. M. Soares, que coordenou o trabalho de campo, desenvolveu a pesquisa e elaborou o texto que dá corpo ao livro.

The publication of the catalogue ‘The Textiles of Bobonaro’ follows the initiative previously launched by the Secretariat of State for Arts and Culture, to provide a series of publication on the traditional textile production of the 12 municipalities and the Special Administrative Region of Oecusse Ambeno of Timor-Leste.

Atividade ida nee hola parte iha koperasaun entre Secretaria de Estado de Turismo, Artes e Cultura (SETAC) no Timor Aid. Livru ida nee maka livru dahat nebe hetan publiksaun husi koperasaun ida nee.

A Timor Aid apresenta mais uma nova publicação, desta feita sobre tais de Bobonaro. Esta atividade insere-se no quadro de cooperação entre a Secretaria de Estado de Turismo, Artes e Cultura (SETAC) e a Timor Aid, sendo este o quarto livro de uma série, já publicada, sobre os tais de Timor-Leste.

Timor Aid is pleased to once again present to the readers a new publication on the tais (textiles) of Bobonaro. This new book results from the ongoing cooperation with the State Secretariat of Tourism, Arts and Culture (SETAC) being this one the fourth of the series of publications to document the textiles of the various regions of TimorLeste. The 3 previous publications have documented the textiles of Suai in 2014, Lautem in 2015 and Baucau in 2016.

The research and publication of ‘The Textiles of Bobonaro’ were made possible due to the generous support from the Secretry of State for Tourism, Arts and Culture through its National Directotare for Arts, Culture and Cultural Creative Industries, which also participated in the field research. O Município de Bobonaro possui uma variedade de têxteis tradicionais que se distinguem pelas cores e padrões provenientes das diversas relações históricas e comerciais de Timor no passado.

The Municipality of Bobonaro has a variety of traditional textiles that are distinguished by the colours and patterns coming from Timor’s various historical and commercial relations in the past.

Localizado na região ocidental do país, junto à fronteira com Timor Ocidental, a norte é banhado pelo mar de Savu, o tasi feto, por um lado e por outro faz fronteira com o Município de Covalima, a sul, e Municípios de Ermera e Liquiça a leste. Possui vastas planícies de arrozais, no norte, e no sul é preenchido pela cordilheira montanhosa que vem de Timor Ocidental e termina na ponta leste.

Located in the western part of the country, along the border with West Timor, on one side; on the north, it is bathed by the Savu Sea, the tasi feto, and on the other borders the Covalima Municipality to the south and Ermera and Liquiça Municipalities to the east.

It has vast rice paddy plains in the north, and in the south is filled by a mountainous range that stretches from West Timor to the eastern tip of the island.

É habitado por vários grupos etnolinguísticos como os bunaks, kemaks, bekais, marae e tétum terik, sendo estes três últimos os minoritários.

Several ethnolinguistic groups such as the bunaks, kemaks, bekais, marae and tétum terik, inhabit Bobonaro, where the later three are the minorities.

Os bunaks, são uma comunidade de fortes linhagens matriarcais que valorizam mais o comércio. Ocupam a zona sudoeste do município, començando por Lolotoe e estendendo-se a leste até Zumalai, no Suai, e a oeste até Lamaknem, em Timor Ocidental.

The bunaks are a community of strong matriarchal lineages that value commerce more. They occupy the southwest part of the municipality, beginning in Lolotoe and extending eastwards to Zumalai, in Suai, and westwards to Lamaknem district in West Timor.

Os kemaks, são uma comunidade com fortes estruturas patriarcais que elevam a tradição cultural como o epicentro da vida. Ocupam a maior parte da costa norte a partir da fronteira de Batugade até Karimbala e Ermera na parte central da ilha.

The kemaks are a community with strong patriarchal structures that elevate cultural tradition as the epicentre of life. They occupy most of the northern coast, from the border of Batugade to Karimbala and Ermera in the central part of the island.

Os bekais, são uma comunidade minoritária não só em Bobonaro mas em todo o Timor.

O suco de Leohitu, em Balibó, é o centro desta comunidade que ainda mantem viva as suas tradições culturais, embora viva rodeada pelos bunaks e kemaks.

The bekais are a minority community not only in Bobonaro but also throughout Timor.

Leohitu village, in Balibó, is the centre of this community, which still keeps its cultural traditions alive, although it lives surrounded by the bunaks and kemaks.

Finalmente os tétum teriks, embora minoritário nesta zona, este grupo tem fortes ligações com os tétum teriks de Suai, Covalima, e os de Malaka em Timor Ocidental 1. Todas estas comunidades possuem têxteis tradicionais com os seus estilos próprios.

Segundo os dados provenientes da SETAC, existe uma quinta comunidade, os maraes no Município de Bobonaro. Infelizmente, no processo do levantamento dos dados de tais, a equipa não conseguiu identificar a comunidade marae. Desconfia-se que esta comunidade já está em risco de desaparecimento, pois as comunidades circunvizinhas que a equipa encontrou, sabem poucos sobre a existência deste grupo linguístico.

A recolha dos dados de tais para este catálogo apenas cobriu algumas zonas domiciliárias destas comunidades devido a limitações de tempo e recursos. Seguindo as direções indicadas pelo representante da cultura do Município de Bobonaro e dos líderes locais, os dados foram recolhidos nas seguinte zonas: suco Tapo Memo em Maliana; sucos Leohitu, Balibó Vila e Cova em Balibó; suco Aidaba leten em Atabae; suco Meligo em Cailaco; Sucos Lourba, Malilait e Marobo em Bobonaro e suco Lebos em Lolotoe. (ver mapa). Uma pesquisa mais abrangente e profunda de certeza enriqueceria mais este catálogo.

O levantamento de dados para a produção desta publicação contou com várias visitas ao terreno por uma equipa da Timor Aid, acompanhada de um funcionário da Secretaria de Estado de Arte e Cultura.

Finally the tétum teriks, a group that, although a minority in the area, has strong links with the tétum teriks of Suai, Covalima, and those of Malaka in West Timor 1. All these communities have traditional textiles with their own styles.

According to data from SETAC, there is a fifth community, the maraes in the Municipality of Bobonaro. Unfortunately, in the process of collecting such data, the research team was unable to identify the marae community. It is suspected that this ethnolinguistic community group is in danger of disappearing, since the surrounding local communities met by the research team, knew very little about them.

The data collection on tais, for this catalogue, only covered a few of these communities’ domiciliary zones, due to time and resource constraints. Following directions by the culture representative of the Bobonaro Municipality and local leaders, the data was collected in the following areas: Tapo Memo village in Maliana; Leohitu, Balibó Vila and Cova villages in Balibó; Aidaba leten village in Atabae; Meligo village in Cailaco; Marobo, Lourba and Malilait villages in Bobonaro and Lebos village in Lolotoe. (see map). A more comprehensive and in-depth search would certainly enrich this catalogue.

The data collection for the production of this publication took several field visits by Timor Aid research team, accompanied by an official from the State Secretariat for Art and Culture.

Muitas pessoas identificam o tais preto com ambos os lados vermelho como o tais típico de Bobonaro, outros apontam para o tais de grandes futus coloridos. No entanto, segundo as tecedeiras locais, os tais do Município de Bobonaro apresentam, em geral, quatro modelos diferentes, alguns mais tradicionais e outros com mais influências estrangeiras. Os tais que podem ser categorizados com menos influência estrangeira são os tais dos kemaks principalmente, seguem-se depois os dos tétum teriks, e os dos bekais. Os tais bunaks são os que apresentam mais influências do exterior, que são visíveis nos padrões dos respectivos tais.

Many people identify the black tais with both sides red as the tais from Bobonaro, some other pointed to the big colourful futus one. However, according to the local weavers, the tais from this municipality generally present four different styles, some more traditional and others with more foreign influences. Those that can be categorized with less foreign influence are primarily the tais of the kemaks, followed by the tétum teriks once and then bekais.

These tais unlike the bunak tais which present more external influences which are visible in the pattern of the tais.

A técnica mais utilizada para criar os padrões nestes tais são maioritariamente a técnica de tingimento de teia única, o futus 2. Tem também vindo a crescer, o uso da técnica de teia flutuante, o foit. Existem ainda mais duas, o pa’a e o litan. Estas duas técnicas são empregadas geralmente para enfeitar as pontas dos tais. O pa’a para o tecido feminino ou tais feto e o litan para o tecido masculino ou tais mane. O litan também tem a função de assegurar que os fios da trama não desfiem.

Todo este processo é realizado manualmente num tear de cintura muito simples conhecido com o nome de atis (T) (fig 5).

Este tear, permite que a tecedeira execute têxteis com a largura máxima correspondente à amplitude dos seus braços. Para fazer um tais mane, a tecedeira costuma juntar longitudinalmente dois painéis idênticos, nian (k), e para os tais feto, entre dois a quatro painéis costurados horizontalmente dependendo do estilo do tecido. Apenas o selendang é feito com um painel singular.

The technique most used to create the patterns in these tais is the single warp resist-dye technique, the futus 2. Following by the floating warp technique, the foit (TT), used, has also been increasing. There are another two the pa’a and the litan. These two techniques are used to adorn the ends of the tais. The pa’a for tais feto and litan for the tais mane. The litan has another function which is to ensure that the weft threads are frayed.

This whole process is performed manually on a very simple backstrap loom known as the atis (T) (fig 5).

This loom allows the weaver to produce textiles with a maximum width corresponding to the width of her arms. To make a man’s textile, tais mane, the weaver usually joins two identical panels, nian (k), lengthwise; and for the women’s textile, tais feto, between two to four panels sewn horizontally, depending on the style of the textile. The selendang is made only with a single panel.

Este conhecimento secular foi herdado dos antepassados e não sofreu transformações significativas com o desenvolvimento actual.

O mesmo acontece com o processo da transmissão deste conhecimento. O início da aprendizagem é feito num tear de brincar, o te’u (K) (fig 6), para meninas dos 3 aos 6 anos, que é feito de palitos e folhas de palmeira ou casca da bananeira. Este brinquedo serve para introduzir o conceito do fio par e ímpar, como colocar a espada, nolu (B), entre os fios na urdidura e o uso da lançadeira. Na segunda fase passa-se ao atis normal, em que a menina começa a tecer o tecido liso feito de fios naturais sem tingimento nenhum. Depois seguese um painel riscado do tamanho de um selendang. Estas etapas de transmissão do conhecimento da tecelagem é comum em todo o município.

Quando se chega à parte de ensinar o processo da criação dos padrões às novas tecedeiras existem diferenças entre os bunaks e as restantes comunidades, kemaks, bekais e tétum teriks. Para os bunaks este processo começa com a introdução da técnica de teia flutuante, o foit, também conhecido em bunak com o nome de nanun oen ou gaun oen (uma trama). Depois de dominarem a primeira vão para a segunda o nanun hiliol ou gaun hiliol (duas ou mais tramas). Para os kemaks, bekais e tétum teriks o mesmo processo começa com a técnica da teia única de cores resistentes, o futus, tecendo um salendang com pequenos futus. Segundo as tecedeiras locais, esta diferença existe pelo facto de, na comunidade bunak, tradicionalmente não ser permitido às pessoas comuns usarem tais de futus, já que esse era um privilégio dos liurais (os chefes da comunidade).

When the time comes to teach new weavers on the process of creating patterns, there are differences between the bunaks and the remaining kemak, bekais and tetum terik communities. For the bunaks, this process begins with the introduction of the floating warp technique, the foit, also known in bunak as the nanun oen or gaun oen (one weft) and followed after by nanun hiliol or gaun hiliol (two or more wefts) after dominating the previous one. For the kemaks, bekais and tétum teriks, this same process begins with the single warp resist-dye technique, the futus, by weaving a salendang with small futus. According the local weavers, this difference exists because traditionally, in the bunak community, ordinary people were not allowed to use tais futus, a privilege reserved to the liurais (the heads of the community).

This secular knowledge was inherited from their ancestors and did not suffer significant transformations with the current development. The same happens with the process of transmitting this knowledge.

The beginning of the learning process is done on a toy loom, te’u (K) (fig 6), for girls from 3 to 6 years old, made out of sticks and palm leaves or bark from the banana tree. This toy is meant to introduce the concept of even and odd threads, placing the sword, nolu (B) between the threads in the warp and the use of shuttle. In the second phase the new weaver move on to the normal atis (T), where the girl begins to weave the plain textile made out of undyed natural threads. Once finish, she will move on weaving a stripe panel with the size of a scarf or selendang. These stages of weaving knowledge transfer are common throughout the municipality.

Os fios industriais sem cor são usados para o processo dos futus e os coloridos nas teias e também na trama. Ainda se encontram algumas tecedeiras a usarem fios de algodão fiado nas áreas remotas devido à falta de acesso ao fio industrial. Mas não muitas, já que a maioria das tecedeiras preferem usar o fio industrial, por facilitar o trabalho. Os fios industriais sem cor devem ser de algodão para poderem absorver as tintas no processo do tingimento natural dos padrões.

Os motivos ou padrões constituem as partes mais delicadas dos tais. No passado eram símbolos que representavam as várias classes sociais deste município. Para os bunaks, quanto maior e colorido for o padrão em futus, mais elevada é classe a

industrial thread is used for the futus process and the coloured once in warps and wefts. Some weavers in remote areas are still using hand spun cotton threads because access to industrial threads is difficult.

However they are few, since most weavers prefer to use industrial threads because it simplifies their work. Industrial uncoloured threads must be made of cotton so as to absorb the dye during the natural dyeing process of the patterns.

The motifs or patterns constitute the most delicate parts of the tais. In the past they were symbols that represented the various social classes of this municipality. For the bunaks, the bigger and more colourful the futus pattern the higher the class of its owner, or in other words, the liurais. For

Os tais dos bunaks e bekais actualmente possuem mais variações de padrões em comparação aos dos kemaks e tétum teriks.

A maioria dos padrões já apresentam motivos com influência estrangeira como por exemplo o dragão, os anjos, emblemas, os pássaros, etc... Os tais com padrões locais são quase todos dos kemaks e tétum teriks.

Os tais com futus tradicionais usam-se mais nas cerimónias e rituais culturais sagrados, pois estes exigem critérios específicos para os tais. Nas outras cerimónias usam-se tais com padrões modernos de futus ou foit.

Em relação à forma de trajar, o homem usa o tais enrolado e preso à cintura com um cinto ou, mais tradicionalmente, por uma longa tira de pano branco, heti knotak (TT), e que pode medir entre quatro a seis metros. O traje fica completo com um outro pendurado no ombro esquerdo.

A mulher traja o tais de duas formas: No modo tradicional, veste-o como se fosse um vestido, fixando-o na zona do peito com uma pequena dobra e colocando um segundo dobrado longitudinalmente no ombro esquerdo. A outra forma, por influência do exterior, consiste em dobrá-lo o suficiente para assim formar uma saia alta que é fixa à cintura usando-se para cobrir o peito e os ombros uma kabaya 3 e, às vezes, sobrepondo-se um selendang ao ombro. O uso dos tais é idêntico a outros municípios com poucas diferenças entre as comunidades matriarcais.

Nowadays, the bunak and bekais tais present more pattern variations than those of the kemaks and tetum terik once. Most of the patterns already present foreign influence such as the dragon, the angels, emblems, the birds, etc... Tais with local patterns are almost all from kemak and tetum terik.

Tais with traditional futus are more frequently used in ceremonies and sacred cultural rituals, as these require specific criteria for the tais. In other ceremonies, there is more flexibility in the use of tais it can be with modern futus patterns or foit.

Regarding the form of attire, the man wears the tais coiled and tied at the waist with a belt or, more traditionally, with a long strip of white cloth, heti knotak (TT), which can measure between four to six meters. The costume is completed with an additional tais hanging over the left shoulder. The woman wears the tais in two ways: in the traditional way, she wears it as if it were a dress, fastened to the chest area with a small fold and placing a second tais folded lengthwise over the left shoulder. An alternative way, of foreign influence, consists of bending the tais sufficiently to form a tall skirt that is held to the waist, using a kabaya to cover the chest and shoulders and, sometimes, overlapping a selendang over the shoulder.

The use of the tais is identical to that of other municipalities, with few differences between matriarchal communities.

São compostos por grandes futus feitos de fio de algodão de várias cores vivas, com as extremidades enfeitadas por barras de litan (K) e pa’a (K), feitos com fio suplementar também de várias cores. Há ainda alguns tais que em vez de futus usam o foit, a técnica com o fio da teia em relevo, para desenhar os padrões.

In a glance, the bunak textile presents characteristics similar to those of the Baiqueno communities in pantai Makasar, Oecusse. They are composed of large futus made out of various bright coloured cotton threads, with its extremities adorned with litan (K) and pa’a (K) bars, made with additional threads of various colours.

There are still some textiles that, instead of a futus, use the foit, a technique with a floating warp thread, to form the patterns.

Segundo as tecedeiras entrevistadas, como a Sra. Ana Flora Lesu Ferreira, nos tempos dos seus avós, na era da ocupação portuguesa, estes tipos de tais de grandes futus, tais uthus (B), eram destinadas só à classe dos liurais. Os desenhos dos padrões pertenciam às mulheres dos liurais e eram dados às tecedeiras mestras encarregadas de tecerem os tais para as famílias dos liurais. A restante população usava tais de tiras simples ou tais com padrões de menor dimensão e não muito coloridos, feitos de foit, que na língua bunak é conhecido tais gapal.

According to a weaver interviewed, Mrs Ana Flora Lesu Ferreira, in the time of her grandparents, during the Portuguese occupation era, these types of textile with big futus, the tais uthus (B) were designed strictly for the noble class. The pattern design belonged to the nobles’ spouses, which were given to the master weavers in charge of weaving tais for the nobles’ families. The remaining population wore simple stripe textiles or tais with smaller and not too colourful patterns, made of foit, which in the bunak language is known as tais gapal.

Ao tecerem os tais, as tecedeiras mestras tinham de o fazer dentro de casa para que as outras tecedeiras não copiassem os padrões destinados aos liurais. Pois, era proibido a uma pessoa comum vestir um tais com o padrão destinado aos liurais.

Hoje em dia qualquer cidadão tem a liberdade de vestir o tais que quiser, no entanto, a prática de tecer dentro de casa foi sendo mantida ao longo dos anos e é considerada lulik nas zonas dos bunaks.

While weaving the tais, the master weavers had to do it inside the house, so that the other weavers could not copy the patterns intended for the nobility, given it was forbidden for an ordinary person to wear a textile with a pattern meant for nobles.

Nowadays, every citizen can wear the tais she/he desire, however, the practice of performing the weaving inside the house has been maintained over the years and considered as sacred in the bunak communities.

Atualmente os tais bunaks são maioritariamente tecidos pelas noras e mulheres kemaks, bem como os seus descendentes, residentes nas zonas dos bunaks. As tecedeiras que hoje em dia residem em Tapo Memo são descendentes do posto administrativo de Bobonaro.

Os seus antepassados migraram para lá através de casamentos cruzados.

Como tradicionalmente os bunaks são de comunidades matriarcais, as mulheres têm poder de decisão no seio familiar. O tais não é exigido no barlake (dote), pois no sistema dos bunaks não há retorno, ou seja, os pais da noiva recebem o dote e não têm de devolver nada ou dar tais em retorno aos pais do noivo.

Embora segundo o uso e costume seja proebido as mulheres bunaks tecerem fora da casa, algumas tecedeiras já o fazem pelas seguintes razões: dentro de casa faz demasiado calor e a claridade faz falta para melhor executar a tarefa. As tecedeiras preferem tecer os seus tais para consumo próprio. Como por exemplo o tais só é usado nos funerais e na multa de ofensas, “fo sala”.

Nestas situações, os tais podem ser de qualquer origem (bunak ou kemak) o essencial é que sejam tais de futus ou thais uthus (B).

Nowadays, the already small number of bunak weavers is at risk of disappearing because the activity is considered lulik, which led bunak women to opt for another means of survival, such as trade.

The actual bunak tais are mostly woven by the daughters-in-law and kemak women and their descendants, living among the bunaks’ community. Weavers who reside in Tapo Memo today are descendants of the Bobonaro administrative post. Their ancestors migrated there through mixed marriages.

Since the bunaks traditionally belong to matriarchal communities, women have decision making power within the family.

The tais is not required in the barlake (dowry), because in the bunak system there is no return, that is, the bride’s parents receive the dowry but do not have to give tais or anything in return to the groom’s parents.

Though base on the tradition it is forbidden for bunaks’ women to weave outside the door, however several weavers are now weaving out of the houses for the following reason: to weave inside the house it is hot and not enough light to support the weaving process and the weavers prefers to weave their own tais for personal used.

O thais uthus é considerado, não só em Bobonaro como em todas as regiões de Timor, como o tais mais apropriado para as cerimónias rituais por serem feitos com a técnica de tecelagem mais original da zona e também pelo uso de motivos locais. As famílias timorenses, sobretudo das áreas rurais, que ainda praticam muito a tradição cultural, reservam sempre um ou mais pares de tais futus para casos de urgência, como um funeral ou outras cerimónias rituais, pois nestas ocasiões o tais é um elemento indispensável.

Os lia-nains (donos da palavra), tanto dos bunaks, como dos kemaks e dos bekais, costumam oferecer o tais preto de origem kemak nas cerimónias tradicionais formais tanto regionais como nacionais. Sendo os representadores do Município de Bobonaro, os lia-nains bunaks da casa lulik “Tama-op”, (a uma lulik que representa toda a zona de Bobonaro: as zonas montanhosas dos kemaks e as zonas de planície dos bunaks, bekais, tétum terik e marae), desempenham o papel de representar os Bobonaros nas cerimónias culturais nacionais. Nestas cerimónias, estes lia-nains também carregam sobre eles os tais kemak, pois segundo eles, os tais bunaks de hoje em dia já são muito modernos.

Atualmente veem-se muitas tecedeiras a tecerem os tais modernos, ainda que mantenham um ou mais tais mane metana tradicionais guardado para fins culturais.

Esta tendência é praticada devido ao fácil acesso aos fios industriais à venda nos mercados e também devido as exigências dos consumidores de tais que os usam para coserem roupas e mais outros acessórios.

Os tipos de tais mais tecidos são os tais mane e os tais feto de grandes motivos.

Todos estes tais podem ter motivos de futus e foits dependendo a quem o tais

The thais uthus is considered as the most suitable tais for ritual ceremonies, not only in Bobonaro but in all regions of Timor, because they are made with the most original weaving technique of the region and use local motifs. Timorese families who still practice the cultural tradition, especially from rural areas, always reserve one or more pairs of tais futus for urgent cases, such as a funeral or other ritual ceremonies, since on such occasions the tais is an indispensable element.

The lia-nains (owner and Lord of the word) of the bunaks and the kemaks and bekais, usually offer the black tais of kemak origin, in formal traditional ceremonies regionally and nationally. As the representative of the municipality of Bobonaro, the bunak lia-nain of the sacred house ‘Tama-op’, (the uma lulik representing the entire area of Bobonaro: the mountainous areas of the kemaks and the bunak, bekais, tetum terik and marae plains) play the role of representing the Bobonaros in national cultural ceremonies. In these ceremonies, these lia-nains also wear the kemak tais.

Nowadays many weavers are seen weaving the modern tais, even though they keep one or more tais mane metamá for cultural purposes. This trend has become a practice due to easy access to industrial threads sold on the market as well as the demands of actual tais costumers which used tais for fashion cloth and accessories.

The type of tais most woven are the tais mane and the tais feto. All these tais may have futus and foits motifs, depending on 25

Fortunately, nowadays this division is no longer practiced and therefore weavers can now weave outside the house and also choose patterns and techniques according to their tastes. The patterns found are mostly of foreign influence, drawn from embroidery and cross stitch samples books and magazines they found around them.

e trepadeiras e também símbolos cristãos ou nacionalistas como o garuda 4 (I). Há uma singularidade nos selendangs (I) bunaks, tecidos por algumas tecedeiras em Lourba. Estes selendangs são decoradas por grandes motivos de futus e barras de litans no intervalo de cada motivo.

Actualmente já é raro encontrar tais bunaks com padrões tradicionais e feitos de algodão fiado à mão. Este tipo de tais constituem uma parte das relíquias dos antepassados e são guardadas e repassadas de geração para geração, juntamente com as amostras antigas (fig 7 e fig 18), o equipamento de preparação e fiação do algodão, bem como os conhecimentos relacionados com a tecelagem.

As técnicas da tecelagem são transmitidas maioritariamente de mães para filhas. O primeiro tais que elas aprendiam a fazer era o tais salis belis (B), com o tamanho de um cachecol, de cor branca lisa, feito de fio de algodão fiado e sem riscas nem motivos.

Depois de dominarem bem a técnica começam a tecer o tais salis belis kesh (B), às riscas pretas e brancas, também do tamanho de um cachecol. Como as pessoas comuns dos bunak estavam proibidas de usar thai uthus (B), então a fase seguinte consistia em aprender a fazer tais salis gaun wen (B) e gaun hilion (B), a técnica de tecelagem com o fio da trama em relevo, conhecido também por foit. A última fase da aprendizagem é a introdução do futus.

Antigamente os tais eram guardados numa cesta feita de palma de aikadiru e era posta em cima do hadak lor 5 superior da uma lulik. Hoje em dia, os tais são guardados numa mala ou no guarda-fatos, juntamente com as roupas, como um enxoval pronto para ser utilizado quando chegar o momento do casamento, ou o momento de ser utilizado.

the rooster, flowers and vines and even of garuda 4 (I). There is a singularity in the bunak selendangs (I), woven by a few weavers in Lourba. These selendangs are decorated with large futus motifs and litan bars in the intervals between each motif.

It is now rare to find bunak tais with traditional patterns and made of hand-spun cotton thread. These types of textile are now a part of the relics of ancestors and stored and passed on from generation to generation, together with the old samples (fig 7 and fig 18), the equipment to prepare and spin the cotton thread and the knowledge related to the weaving.

Weaving techniques are mostly passed on from mothers to daughters. The first tais they learned to do was the salis belis (B), which has the size of a scarf, of plain white colour, no stripes or motifs and made with hand spun cotton thread. After mastering the technique, they begin to weave tais salis belis kesh (B), in black and white stripes, also with the size of a scarf. Since bunak commoners were forbidden to use thai uthus (B), the next phase consisted in learning how to make the tais salis gaun wen (B) and gaun hilion (B), the weaving technique with floating warp thread, also known as foit. The last phase in this learning process is the introduction of the futus.

In the past, tais were kept in a basket made of aikadiru palm leaves and were placed upon the hadak lor 5 of the uma lulik.

Nowadays, the tais are kept in a suitcase or in a wardrobe, along with the clothes, like a trousseaux ready to be used when the time comes, be it for a wedding or any other significant moment.

Os kemaks são conhecidos como grandes produtores de tais e senhores dos tais pretos. A maioria dos seus tais são de estilo tradicional e decorados com padrões pequenos tingidos com cores naturais.

São mestres da técnica do tingimento com lama, um conhecimento adquirido pelos seus antepassados há séculos.

The kemaks are known as major tais producers and masters of the black tais.

Most of their tais are of traditional style and decorated with small patterns dyed with natural colours. They are masters of the mud dyeing technique, a knowledge acquired from their ancestors’ centuries ago.

O Sabu, Api Den e Bo Dato, são os três principais tais usados nas cerimónias culturais kemaks, segundo os kemaks de Marobo. Estes tais também são conhecidos com outros nomes como tais Metamá e Rican em Cailaco e Atabae. São todos pretos, com o futus saramata, tingido em azul índigo com um enfeite principal nas extremidades. No centro ficam os futus pequenos, gun (K) e silu kesak (T) a preencherem toda a superficie central. Nas extremidades, sobretudo no tais Bo Dato, que é um tais feminino, existem pequenos enfeites chamados pa’a, ou seja, pequenos padrões feitos com fio suplementar de várias cores em forma de pequenas estrelas.

Segundo as tradições dos kemaks, antigamente os tais Sabu e Api Den eram usados pelas personalidades como os liurais e os seus decendentes. As mulheres usavam o tais Bo Dato ou Rican. As pessoas comuns vestiam-se de tais Tadan. Depois da introdução dos fios industriais, os liurais começaram a usar os tais com mais cores

Traditional customs and practices are still very much alive in this patriarchal community, spread throughout the administrative posts of Cailaco and Atabae and also in the village complex of Marobo.

Here the kemak women spend afternoons in the back terrace of their houses weaving tais for both cultural and commercial uses.

The Sabu, Api Den and Bo Dato are the three main tais used in the kemak Marobo cultural ceremonies. These tais are also known by other names such as tais Metamá and Rican in Cailaco and Atabae. They are all black, with the saramata futus dyed in indigo dark blue as the main ornament at the extremities.

In the central part lie the small futus gun (K) and silu kesak (T) to fill the entire central surface. At the extremities, especially in the tais Bo Dato, which is a feminine tais, there are small ornaments called pa’a, that is, small patterns in the form of small stars made with supplementary thread of various colours.

According to kemak tradition, in the past, the Sabu and Api Den tais were used by prominent personalities such as liurais and their descendants. Women wore the Bo Dato or Rican tais. Commoners wore Tadan tais. After the introduction of industrial thread, the liurais began to use tais with more colours except in certain cultural rituals where coloured tais were not allowed.

Estes tais com cor eram o tais Naban, Mgai e Lar Pua. De acordo com as tecedeiras, o tais Naban e Mgai são tais que mostram a influência dos bunaks, pois a cor vermelha que aparece nas extremidades foram adaptadas dos tais bunaks mantendo os padrões e a composição dos tais kemaks.

Hoje em dia, já se encontram motivos estrangeiros como os futus florais ou ai hetun (K) nestes tipos de tais.

Entre os kemaks de Marobo, Cailaco e Atabae, os de Marobo são os mais fieis à tradição6. No interior de Marobo, nas aldeias de Ilat-laun e Soelesu, é proibido tecer com fios industriais coloridos, só são permitidas as cores preta e branca. Para terminar as pontas dos tais, que normalmente são feitas com fios industriais coloridos, as tecedeiras destas duas aldeias transportam o seu tear

Essa prática contribuiu para que a maioria dos tais de Marobo continuassem a manter o estilo original como os tais Sabu, Api Den, Bo Dato, Tadan, Naban, Magai e Lar Pua. Ao passo que os kemak em Cailaco e Atabae já são mais flexíveis nas tradições culturais. Os tais identificados naquelas áreas já são mais coloridos e diversificados. Além dos futus também se aplicam outras técnicas como o foit, aqui conhecido como tais sico (K).

As tecedeiras de Cailaco, só tecem os tais pretos para uso cultural, de resto preferem tecer os tais coloridos, com futus ou foit, feitos com fios industriais. A maioria dos tais encontrados em Cailaco apresentam padrões estrangeiros como flores, galos e o garuda (I).

Enquanto que as tecedeiras de Atabae, principalmente as das zonas remotas, como a aldeia de Aidaba Leten Foho e a zona de Coitapo, já usem fios industriais para tecerem os tais para fins comerciais, ainda mantêm os padrões tradicionais,

these two villages transport their loom to a part of the village of Atuaben, located outside the lulik area, that is, outside the sacred zone. With this practice, most of the Marobo tais continue to maintain the original style such as the tais Sabu, Api Den, Bo Dato, Tadan, Naban, Magai and Lar Pua, whereas the kemak in Cailaco and Atabae are more flexible regarding these cultural traditions. Tais identified in those areas are more colourful and diverse. Besides the futus, other techniques are applied such as the floating warp technique, locally known as tais sico (K).

The weavers of Cailaco only weave the black tais for cultural uses, preferring to weave the coloured tais with futus or floating warp technique made with industrial thread.

Most tais found in Cailaco present foreign patterns such as flowers, roosters and the garuda (I).

On the other hand, the weavers of Atabae, especially those in remote areas such as the village of Aidaba Leten Foho and the Coitapo area, still maintain the traditional patterns left by their ancestors despite already using industrial threads to weave tais for commercial purposes. Some of them still spin cotton (bai ren) for the futus.

Para designar o tais feminino e masculino, os termos são os mesmos: tais hinen e tais manen. O selendang é conhecido por san sere.

The futus that appears more often in the Atabae tais is the futus tagaan (K) or, as the weavers say, baliga tagaan. There are three types of baliga tagaan: koe hena, uma sui and slar (fig 18).

Besides the names of the tais, the kemaks in different administrative posts have different terminologies to designate the tecniques. For example, in Marobo the futus is designated as uthus (K), in Cailaco as utusu (K) and in Atabae the futus is known as baliga (K). The term foit is used in Marobo, while in Cailaco and Atabae, sico is used. To designate a female and male tais, the terms are the same: tais hinen and tais manen. The selendang is known as san sere.

In the markets of Maliana, black tais from Marobo are more commonly seen on sale,

Soru tais sei sai nafatin nu’udar meiu de subsistênsia ba soru-nain kemak barak, maske ohin loron faan tais rasik ladún manan ida, tamba tais sira ne’ebé sira halo hanesan no nafatin hela deit no ema nia vida ohin loron mós muda ona. Soru-nain sira ohin loron fo tais ba sira nia oan sira bainhira sira ba eskola iha Dili. Bainhira estudante sira ne’e susar osan sira sei lori tais sira ne’e ba faan iha merkadu tais ka ba ema sira ne’ebé sira hatene.

Nos mercados de Maliana veem-se mais à venda os tais pretos de Marobo, enquanto que no de Balibó os dos bunaks. É nestes mercados que as tecedeiras compram os fios industriais. Para as tecedeiras que vivem longe do mercado, a solução é recorrer ao algodão fiado embora esse processo de fiação seja longo e cansativo, a razão porque poucas são as tecedeiras que recorrem a esta solução.

A tendência do mercado local, com exceção dos tais para fins culturais, dá preferência aos tais coloridos e brilhantes feitos com o fio lurex. Os bunaks são os grandes compradores de tais da zona pois muitos delas já não tecem. A tradição cultural dos bunaks é flexível, por isso podem utilizar qualquer tipo de tais. O mesmo não acontece com os kemaks, que têm de usar tais específicos nas cerimónias culturais. Se não cumprirem os requisitos vão ter que pagar multas com tais, ou animais. Por exemplo, num funeral dos kemaks é exigido o tais Kasen, um tais de homem grande, composto por três painéis para cobrir o caixão do falecido. Se por qualquer razão não for possível este tais só pode ser substituído por um tais Api Den ou Sabu por terem a mesma cor. Para as festas, são usadas os tais Naban, Mgai, Lar Pua ou Manu Saen por serem mais coloridos.

A tecelagem ainda continua a ser um meio de subsistência para várias tecedeiras kemaks, apesar de o comércio de tais não ser muito forte, devido à pouca diversidade dos produtos, bem como às mudanças do modo de vida. As tecedeiras costumam entregar os tais aos filhos antes de irem estudar para Díli e nos tempos de maior dificuldade, estes vendem-os no mercado dos tais ou as pessoas conhecidas.

For those weavers who live far away from the markets, their solution is to continue to spin cotton although the spinning process is long and tiring, which causes only few weavers turn to this solution.

The trend of the local market, with the exception of tais for cultural purposes, gives preference to bright, coloured tais made with lurex thread. The bunaks are the major buyers of tais in the area as most of them no longer weave. The cultural tradition of the bunaks is flexible, so they can use any kind of tais. The same does not happen with the kemaks, who have to use specifics tais in cultural ceremonies. Fail to meet the requirements will cause penalties and have to pay fines with tais or animals. For example, a kemak funeral demands a tais Kasen, a men’s cloth composed of three panels to cover the coffin of the deceased.

If for any reason this tais is not available, it can only be replaced by a tais Api Den or Sabu because they have the same colour.

For parties, tais Naban, Mgai, Lar Pua or Manu Saen are used because they are more colourful.

Weaving still remains a livelihood for several kemak weavers, although the tais trade is not a very strong one due to the low diversity of products and changes in the way of life. Weavers usually deliver tais to their children before leaving for Dili to study and in difficult times, they sell them on the tais market or to acquaintances.

Komunidade bekais iha aldeia Leohitu maka komunidade kiik ida ne’ebé moris iha komunidade kemak, bunak no tetum terik sira nia leet iha Balibó, Munisípiu Bobonaro.

Komunidade ida ne’e bolu sira nia an ho naran: welaun. Maske kiikoan, sira mós iha sira nia lisan rasik, inklui mós uzu kostume soru tais ne’ebé sira kaer nafatin durante tinan barak ho ninia karakteriska tradisional balun.

A comunidade de bekais em Leohitu é uma comunidade minoritária que vive entre os kemaks, bunaks e tétum teriks, em Balibó no município de Bobonaro. Esta comunidade é conhecida localmente com o nome de Welaun. Embora pequena, também possui a sua tradição cultural, incluindo o tais que tem conseguido manter ao longo dos anos com algumas das suas características tradicionais.

The community of bekais in Leohitu is a minority community that lives between the kemaks, bunaks and tétum teriks, in Balibó, in the municipality of Bobonaro.

This community is known locally as Welaun.

Although small, it also has its cultural tradition, including the traditional textiles, with some of its traditional characteristics maintaining over the years.

Tais sira ne’ebé identifika nu’udar tais típiku komunudade bekais/welaun sira nian maka: tais Inan Keli (Be) no Kari Lamaran (Be).

Tais Inan Keli maka tais feto naruk ida ho ninia dimensaun úniku. Tais ida ne’e nia luan metro ida deit no nia naruk metru rua to’o tolu. To’o ohin loron, seidauk identifika iha territoriu Timor tomak tais feto ida naruk hanesan ida ne’e.

Os tais identificados como típicos da comunidade de bekais/welaun são: o tais Inan Keli (Be) e o Kari Lamaran (Be). O tais Inan Keli, corresponde aos tais feto (T), isto é ao tais tubular de uso feminino. Só que aqui têm uma dimensão única: um metro de largura e dois a três metros de comprimento. Até à data nunca tinha sido identificado no território de Timor-Leste nenhum tais feto com este comprimento.

Tais Kari Lamaran, maka tais mane ne’ebé uza par ho tais Inan Keli. Tais ida ne’e ninia modelu hanesan tais mane babain, retangular ho sarin iha rohan rua. Diferensa husi tais ida ne’e ho tais bunak no kemak sira maka futus inan no oan ne’ebé mósu iha tais ida ne’e. Tantu tais feto hanesan mós tais mane sira nia kor predominante maka mean, no sira iha funsaun espesífika ida iha serimónia kaben tradisional nian. Iha serimónia ida ne’e tais Inan Keli feto sira la hatais ida, maibe sira uza hodi kahe iha kabás noiva nian no tais mane Kari Lamaran kahe iha kabás noivu nian. Tais rua ne’e soru-nain sira halo espesifikamente ba fim ida ne’e no la faan iha merkadu.

O tais Kari Lamaran, é um tais mane, que é usado pelos homens; tem a forma retangular com franjas em ambas as extremidades. O que difere este tais dos tais bunaks e kemaks é o futus principal e a sua composição. Chama-se Kari Lamaran porque têm uma série de futus pequeninos espalhados no centro do tais entre dois futus principais colocados em cada uma das extremidades.

Tanto o tais feminino como o masculino têm o vermelho como cor predominante e possuem uma função específica no ritual do casamento tradicional. Nestas cerimónias o tais Inan Keli não é vestido, mas sim posto sobre o ombro da noiva e o Kari Lamaran no ombro do noivo. Estes dois tais são tecidos especificamente para este fim e não são postos à venda no mercado.

The textiles identified as typical of the bekais/welaun community are: the tais Inan Keli (Be) and the tais Kari Lamaran (Be).

The tais Inan Keli, corresponds to tais feto, that is, to the tubular tais for female use.

But here it has a unique dimension: one meter wide and two to three meters in length. To date, in Timor-Leste, no tais feto had yet been identified with this kind of length.

The tais Kari Lamaran is a tais mane, worn by men; it has a rectangular shape with fringes at both extremities. What differs between these and the bunak and kemaks tais is the main futus and its composition.

It is called Kari Lamaran because it has a series of tiny futus scattered in the center of the tais, in between two main futus, one at each of the extremities.

Both the feminine and the masculine textiles have red as the predominant colour and play a specific role in the traditional wedding ritual. In these ceremonies, the tais Inan Keli is not worn, but rather placed on the bride’s shoulder and the Kari Lamaran placed on the groom’s shoulder. These two textiles are woven specifically for this purpose and are not sold at the market.

Futus tatan, é uma amostra feita em palitos de bambu para documentar os desenhos de futus ou padrões da família ou do clã. É usado pelas tecedeiras na transmissão dos motivos das suas famílias de geração em geração. Hoje em dia, este tipo de banati já não é muitos desaparecem devido aos incendios as casas e uma lulik durante o periodo da guerra. Encontram-se mais facilmente amostras de ponto cruz ou desfiado para se criarem os motivos nos tais.

O que explica, em parte, a diminuição dos padrões antigos no tais de hoje em dia.

Alem deste dois tais, o Inan Keli e Kari Lamaran, também foram encontrados outros tipos como o tais “futus tatak”, tais “gaun wen” e “nini wain”. Estes últimos tais assemelham-se aos tais dos kemaks e dos bunaks. Os tais futus tataks possuem grandes futus em toda a superfície com algumas tiras fininhas coloridas enfeitando ao redor dos grandes futus. À primeira vista, estes tais confundem-se com os dos bunaks e também com os de Oecusse. Os gaun wen, ou tais foit usam a técnica de teia flutuante na criação dos seus padrões.

Futus Tatan, is a sample made of bamboo sticks to document the futus patterns or motives belong to family or clan. It is used by weavers to transmit the motives of their families from one generation to another within the family. Nowadays, this type of sample is no longer common, most of them disappeared in fire when the uma lulik and the houses got fire during the time of war.

Cross-stitch or embroidery samples are more easily found to create the traditional textiles motifs. This explains, in part, the diminution of the ancient patterns in today’s tais.

In addition to these two tais, the Inan Keli and Kari Lamaran, other types have also been found such as the tais ‘futus tatak’, tais ‘gaun wen’ and ‘nini wain’. These latter resemble those of the tais kemak and bunak.

The tais futus tataks have large futus across their surface, with a few colourful, thin strips adorning the major futus. At first glance, these textiles are confused with those of the bunaks and also with those of Oecusse. The gaun oen, or tais foit use the floating warp technique to create their patterns.

Tais interesante ida ne’ebé identifika iha Balibo maka tais feto foit gaun rua, tomak. tuir tais nia nain, tais ida ne’e soru-nain ida husi Atsabe maka soru iha tempu okupasaun Indonesia nian. Soru tais ida hanesan ida ne’e kolen no han tempu tamba ne’e maka ohin loron soru-nain sira barak mak lakohi atu soru tan tais hanesan ne’e (fig 35).

O tais mais interessante identificado em Balibó vila foi precisamente um tais feto foit. Segundo a proprietária, este tais foi feito no tempo da ocupação Indonésia por uma tecedeira de Atsabe. É composto por sete painéis pequeninos cheios de padrões feitos com a técnica de teia flutuante longa.

Por ser difícil a sua produção, hoje em dia muitas das tecedeiras já o não querem tecer (fig 35).

Iha aldeia Mohak mós iha tais mane ida ho téknika hanesan ho dezeñu garuda. Hanesan parte ida mós husi programa ida ne’e maka sira mós halo distribuisaun kabas industriais no kabas lakan, lurex ba soru-nain sira, ne’ebé fasilita soru-nain sira soru tais maibe mós hamenos tiha uzu husi kabas tíi.

Na aldeia de Mohak também foi identificado um tais mane com a mesma técnica para “desenhar” o garuda. Segundo as tecedeiras, estes padrões e a prática da técnica de teia flutuante longa foi mais intensificada no tempo da Indonésia, com a presença das senhoras do Darma Wanita do programa PKK (Pendidikan Ketrampilan Keluarga) 7, em português: “Ensino do Artesanato Familiar”. Fazia parte deste programa a distribuição dos fios industriais, o que fez com que o uso do algodão fiado fosse perdendo lugar para os fios industriais e o lurex.

Alem de soru tais, soru-nain sira barak mak homan nain mós. Sira homan sasan oioin atu uza ba iha serimónia kultural sira no mós hodi lori ba uza iha uma (fig 36).

7. PKK maka atividade ida ne’ebe iha tempu Indonesia dignitariu sira nia fen hamoso hodi servisu hamutuk ho feto sira iha area rural. PKK é uma atividade criada pela associação das esposas dos dignatários para trabalhar com as mulheres nas áreas rurais e urbanas. PKK is an activity created by the dignitaries’ wives association to work with the women’s in the rural and urban areas.

Além de tecerem os tais, as mulheres em Leohitu são também boas cesteiras, produzem várias cestas para usarem nas cerimónias tradicionais, assim como para uso doméstico (fig 36).

The most interesting traditional textile identified in Balibó Vila was precisely a tais feto foit.

According to the owner, this traditional textile was made during the Indonesian occupation, by a weaver from Atsabe. It consists of seven tiny panels filled with patterns made with the long floating warp technique. Because its production is difficult, nowadays many weavers no longer want to weave it (fig 35).

In the village of Mohak, a tais mane was also identified which used the same technique to ‘draw’ the garuda. According to the weavers, these patterns and the practice of the long floating warp technique were further intensified in Indonesian times, with the presence of the Darma Wanita ladies from the PKK (Pendidikan ketrampilan keluarga) 7 program. The distribution of industrial threads was part of this program and thus, the use of the cotton spinning gradually lost its place to industrial thread and lurex.

Besides weaving tais, the women in Leohitu are also good basket makers, producing various baskets to use in traditional ceremonies, as well as for domestic use (fig 36).

Maski sira sai nu’udar komunidade kiikoan ida, ema tetum terik Cova sira ninia moris no lisan sira hanesan hela deit ho tetun Terik sira husi Covalima no tetum terik sira husi Malaka, iha Timor Osidental.

Os tetum terik também fazem parte da comunidade minoritária do posto administrativo de Balibó, Município de Bobonaro. Habitam no suco Cova, em apenas quatro aldeias. Embora se trate de uma comunidade pequena, os tetum terik de Cova têm muito em comum com os tetum terik de Covalima e os tetum terik de Malaca em Timor Ocidental.

The tetum terik are also part of the minority community in the Balibó administrative post, Municipality of Bobonaro. They live in the Cova suco, in only four villages.

Although it is a small community, the tetum terik of Cova has much in common with the tetum terik of Covalima and the tetum terik of Malaca in West Timor.

Uma tecedeira entrevistada, a Sra. Estefania Pereira revelou que em Cova as novas gerações não estão interessadas em dar continuidade à tradição da tecelagem. As que ainda tecem são idosas e as “feto foun” (noras) vindas de outras zonas. Segundo ela, em Cova já não há muitas tecedeiras.

Devido à falta de fios industriais nas lojas, em Cova, a senhora Estefania continua a fiar o algodão, que tem plantado à volta da casa, para tecer os tais. Ela fez questão de nos mostrar a técnica e é verdadeiramente impressionante o domínio do fuso (fig 44). É uma pena que saberes destes se percam para sempre. Mas, além de ainda tecer tais, a Sra. Estefania também é uma excelente artesã de esteiras de folhas de palmeira, os biti tali. As esteiras são vendidas para ajudar no sustento da família, pois ela é viúva e vive com uma filha, também viúva com 4 filhos.

Um dos tais antigos que a Sra. Estefania conserva até hoje é o tais feto Suri Ulun. Este tais foi tecido por ela com algodão fiado e cor sintética. Os padrões são tradicionais, foram retiradas do cabo da espada, que em tetum se chama surik ulun.

Tais identified in Cova, in the Mane Haat Village, are identical to those of the tetum terik of Suai Covalima: the tais namok and tais feto hakserak.

Mrs. Estefania Pereira, an interviewed weaver, revealed that in Cova the new generations are not interested in continuing the weaving tradition. Those that still weave are old women and the ‘feto foun’ (daughters-in-law) come from other areas.

According to her, there are only few weavers in Cova.

Given there is a lack of industrial threads in stores around Cova, Mrs. Estefania still spins cotton, which she has planted around the house, to weave the tais. She was keen to show us the technique and her mastery of the spindle is truly impressive (fig 44).

It is sad that this knowledge may become lost forever. However, while still being a tais weaver, Mrs. Estefania is also an excellent artisan of palm leaf mats, the biti tali. The mats are sold to help support the family, as she is a widow and lives with one daughter, also a widow with four children.

One of the old tais Mrs. Estefania retains to this day is the tais feto Suri Ulun. This tais was woven by her with spun cotton and synthetic colour. The patterns are traditional, they were taken from the sword hilt, which in tetum is called surik ulun.
