The firm will use the new premises to continue their long term aim of ‘demystifying’ the process for its customers through providing design quotations and first class technical support. As a technically biased firm, Underfloor Warehouse boast six engineers who treat each scheme individually, which has resulted sales in excess of 100 heat pumps per month. The firm prides itself on supplying the highest quality systems which are correctly supported, at competitive prices – clients are able to arrive with an idea and leave with a system designed for their specific needs. Underfloor Warehouse are also able to recommend an installer who is qualified to install renewable systems, who themselves have had to meet the UFW code of conduct. The expansion is just one sign of Managing Director Nigel Parkes’ unrivaled ambition and plans for the business. Already he has seen an annual growth in excess of 30% since

it was set up back in 2007 and is insistent that Underfloor Warehouse will become a £20 million company within just three years. His brand new training center that is set to open its doors in May will further enhance the solid set-up he already has on the firm and allow him to see even more growth and development within the company.

Entrepreneur of the Year

hanging the shape of any business can be a challenge but the significant changes in the energy industry meant that when David Hayle joined PJD in 2006, his battle to bring the company in line with its competitors was a tough one, particularly as his field of expertise was finance, not power stations! Four years down the line and David has emerged from the challenge victorious with a host of new clients to shout about, a turnover increased by £20 million and a nomination for Entrepreneur of the Year at the Leicestershire Business Awards. PJD is a leading mechanical engineering business, employing the very best engineers to enable its customers to build, repair, maintain and decommission high pressure heat and power generation plants as effectively as possible. The firm brought in David in 2006 to lead the management buyout (MBO) of the company. At this point, over 90% of turnover came from just two sources, making David’s first challenge marketing the business to other potential clients. PJD now have a targeted marketing plan in place, have re-branded and are enjoying a wealth of new clients. PJD has always prided itself on offering a different and innovative approach to a range of projects within the power generation industry. In 2008 the firm realised that coal-fired power generation was unlikely to grow in the short to medium term , offering David the perfect opportunity to re-market the company and position the firm at the forefront of the energy market, diversifying into new markets in order for the business to grow. Today, the company has incorporated a new market – environmental energy; allowing them to become involved in the building of biomass and energy from waste plans and expanding the services they offer customers. David spearheaded the relocation from the previous headquarters in Uttoxeter to a larger space in Castle Donington, whilst he also brought in in new faces from key blue chip companies who had the knowledge and

contacts to help PJD expand into the new markets. David completed the company’s first merger in August last year with Grayton Engineering, forming a group that now employs over 165 people with revenues in excess of £30 million per year. David’s work since taking over the firm has cemented PJD as one of the UK’s leading mechanical engineering firms across the power, environmental and industrial sectors. They are well on their way to beating their growth plans – proving that David Hayle is a great candidate for the Leicestershire Entrepreneur of the Year Award. you were looking for a firm that is consistently giving back to its community, then you need look no further than independent insurance brokers Brett and Randall. Having traded in Leicestershire for 28 years, not only have they attracted business to the area and created a multitude of local jobs, but they are currently financing a £2.5 million relocation in the city from their current site in Leicester city centre to a larger property just outside the city. This private sector investment in Leicestershire is just one factor that has earned them a nomination for the Investing in Leicestershire accolade at this year’s Leicestershire Business Awards. Its an even bigger celebration bearing in mind the company is approaching its 30th anniversary; an event they will enjoy in style as they are in September, due to begin a new life in a brand new 10,000 square foot office at Grove Park that is only a stones throw from the nearby motorway, providing them with easy transport links to all their clients who are based throughout the UK. Specialists in commercial and industrial risks, they provide businesses with completely independent, professional advice. The firm has already placed Leicestershire firmly on the business map for it was Brett and Randall who brought Brokerbility to the insurance market. Brokerbility is a group of like-minded, high quality, independent brokers that share common values and goals. Consisting of 34 independent companies the Group delivers £420m GWP to the UK Insurance market. Much of the work that Brokerbility does is with Insurer partners based in larger cities in particular London and operationally there is some attraction to

move to London but Brett & Randall stress this is not on the agenda and aim to continue to ply their trade in Leicester, a city they have invested so heavily in. After starting out from very humble beginnings as a motor and household brokerage in the late seventies in 1982 the firm sold off its personal lines business and has since been focusing on business insurance. The company has grown progressively throughout its 28 years in business but particularly in the last 6 years, acquiring other Brokers in Nottingham and Northampton as it aims to become a larger regional broker focusing on the East Midlands. Today, they have 92 highly qualified staff across all areas of insurance with specialists in Healthcare, Employees Benefits and Marine.

We are delighted to be of service to

Entrepreneur of Sales & Marketing the Year - Mo Bham L Business of the Year

hen Mo Bham bought out Imperial in 2004, the company was struggling. Despite having previously enjoyed success, it had fallen on hard times but Mo, who joined as a 15-year-old and worked his way up to the top of the firm, saw the business’ potential and was determined to turn it around. Seven years later and he has turned losses into profits, increased his workforce from four to 26 and moved into a £3.1 million new complex in Whetstone – you could say he has deserved his nomination for Entrepreneur of the Year at the Leicestershire Business Awards! Imperial is now one of the UK’s leading homeware accessory companies, supplying kitchen and bathroom accessories to leading high street retail and trade markets. When Mo first took over the company, it only sold items to independent stores; today it supplies a number of popular household names and even designs bespoke stainless cookware for leading retailers AGA and for Historic Royal Palaces of London. In fact, so high is the quality of the company’s designs that their first international collection is going live in America in April. As one of the fastest growing homeware suppliers in the UK, Imperial prides itself on in-house design innovation, high levels of product availability and

excellence in customer service. The company’s current site boasts an exceptional design studio complete with extended stock and storage facilities. If there is something you want that you can’t find on their products list, Imperial are happy to design it for you – in fact, they will even go as far as to invent a new product if you are after something specific! Perhaps the most admirable thing about the company however, is its commitment to its community. Since it was founded in 1967, the firm has stayed loyal to Leicester and since Mo took over the company, he has created endless jobs for local citizens and invested huge amounts of money into the local area as he has developed the business and turned it from a struggling, old fashioned firm to a company that is dominating its market. He comments: “I was born and raised in Leicester and have always known Imperial. From the very day I joined the company as a junior in the 70s, I have been building on my knowledge of the homeware sector and the city itself. One thing I wanted to do when I took over was to give something back to Leicester; my home and the city that has kept Imperial going through hard times. I am delighted to have built the business back up again and help put Leicestershire back on the international map for design and manufacturing.”

Since taking over at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, Daniel has transformed the venue’s public image as just being the home of Coventry City Football Club to a world class venue for business, entertainment and sport – efforts that have helped him win a prestigious Midlands Business Award in the category of Business Person of the Year. From a background working in leisure operations and commercial contract negotiation, specialising in catering, large scale management and ticketing, Daniel joined the Ricoh Arena in October 2006 and instantly saw the potential for development of the premises. After initially opening its doors in August 2005, the Ricoh Arena was known simply as the local club’s football stadium but Daniel wanted it to be known globally as a top business, entertainment and sport destination.

The Ricoh Arena was losing £3.5 million when Daniel took over and now has an EBITDA profit of over £3 million. In the last four years the business has repaid £5.6 million of senior debt and the balance sheet has moved from negative shareholders’ funds of -£3.67 million in 2006 to positive shareholders’ funds of +£1 million last year. The company is completely self funding and has reinvested its profits to drive future growth. 2010 saw the company invest £3.7 million in expanding its burgeoning B2B offer. It is not just a numbers game though. The Ricoh has hosted some enormous scale events over the last few years that has helped it to become a recognised venue worldwide. In business, the venue has hosted a conference for a global company for 3,500 delegates; in entertainment they attracted over 115,000 fans for three-sell out nights of Take That in June 2009 – the largest concert to ever take place in the Midlands; and in sport, the Ricoh Arena has been named the only Midlands venue to host live footballing games at the 2012 Olympic Games. As if that wasn’t enough, the venue will be hosting the FA Women’s Cup final on May 21 this year, followed by a Kings of Leon concert on May 30. Furthermore, the Ricoh Arena has been named a venue for the Rugby World Cup and has even hosted England Under-19 and Under-21 internationals – not surprising then that the venue has had over seven million visitors since August 2005! However, as an aspirational businessman, this is not enough for Daniel Gidney who continues to have high hopes for the

efuse collection vehicle manufacturers Dennis Eagle ended 2010 in style after their Managing Director, Norman Thoday received a nomination for the Businessperson of the Year award at the Midlands Business Awards. Norman originally joined Dennis Brothers in Guildford as an apprentice and has experienced many changes at the company, including the merger of Hestair Dennis with Eagle Engineering in 1985 to form Dennis Eagle as we know it today. A worthy nominee, his own personal success came on the back of a year of significant progress and development for the Warwick-based company. For 2010 was the year that Dennis Eagle celebrated 25 years in business at its headquarters and an expansion of the site. Furthermore, the firm’s Olympus vehicle saw unprecedented success and was shortlisted for Vehicle of the Year at the Chartered Institute of Waste Management Awards for Environmental Excellence. The company was awarded several significant contracts both in the UK and abroad and Ethan Flynn, one of the company’s second year apprentices, was awarded the Mechanical Apprentice of the Year accolade at the MGTS annual award ceremony. As a consequence, Dennis Eagle are now able to offer a better all round paint finish on their vehicles which lasts longer, thus improving the performance for customers and increasing the durability of the trucks.

Norman is a strong believer in making the firm as environmentally friendly as he can – something recognised in his Midlands Business Awards nomination. He helped the company to announce it would upgrade its Euro 5 engines from the start of this year in order to achieve Enhanced Environmentallyfriendly Vehicle compliance. Business Person of the Year - Nick Surface

hen Nick Surface took over at Coventry – based Nettle Hill Training and Conference Centre, the business had just announced losses of £50,000. Within his first year in charge, Nick had turned this around to profits of £12,500 and has since transformed the business into one of the most recognised conference centres in the Midlands, earning him a nomination for a Midlands Business Award in the Business Person of the Year category.

Nick, an ex-project manager, followed a very simple theory in order to develop the centre into a renowned venue and instead of making one aspect of the business 100% better, he made every aspect of the business one per cent better. The results are there for everyone to see. Already, Nettle Hill Training and Conference Centre has played host to such companies as Rolls Royce and Ford, increased its number of staff and even added a new service for clients to take advantage of. Originally a farmhouse built in the 17th century, Nettle Hill was converted into a training and conference centre in 1989 after it was purchased by a Christian charity now known as Together. Boasting a total of nine rooms that can double up to accommodate from 6 – 140 people, Nettle Hill is now a leading venue for training seminars and business conferences. However, due to its unique surroundings, Nick has also introduced weddings to the venue’s list of services. Already Nick is seeing an interest from couples wanting to wed within the natural surroundings of Nettle Hill and has developed his usual food menu to suit. The venue prides itself on offering something for everyone. It’s not food that needs fancy words or over explaining. It’s just good, wholesome, traditional meals, whether for your wedding guests or your business colleagues and associates. With on-site accommodation for up to 38 people and mod-cons like Wifi thrown into the deal, Nettle Hill Training and Conference Centre is an ideal venue for

alesowen-based Nicklin Business Advisers have added to their list of honours by being named a finalist in the category of Service Provider of the Year at the Midlands Business Awards. Their latest achievement adds to their success at the Institute of West Midlands Chartered Accountants awards, where they have won Accountants of the Year for three of the last four years. It is little more than they deserve after diversifying their business over a decade ago to offer a more modern variety of services to SMEs across the country.

Service Provider of the Year

Nicklin Business Advisers was originally set up in 1931 by Mr Tom Nicklin, as a sole practitioner he offered accounting, auditing, book-keeping and taxation services. However, current Managing Partner Harvey Owen saw the position of an accountancy practice evolving as the everyday demands of businesses increased. As such, the firm introduced a new range of services to their charter including management advice, tax mitigation, forensic accounting, wealth management, business development and financial services – the kind of support that most clients would usually only receive from top national firms. The expansion of the firm’s services has resulted in an increase of new business and has also allowed the company to offer more to existing clients, many of whom have been with them for a number of years and some since inception in 1931. With around 50 staff offering expertise in all areas of business development and accountancy, Nicklin Business Advisers have the depth of knowledge required to offer owner-managed businesses a surprisingly wide-ranging service. Recently, the Firm has brought together a consortium which, with the support of Walsall Council and both the Black Country and Worcester Chambers of Commerce, is applying for £4m worth of funding from the Regional Growth Fund. This project will help supply a number of services including business support, accountancy, marketing etc., to SME’s throughout the region.

it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, it is fair to say that Worcesterbased Gtech has come a long way since being a one-man bedroom project to a company with 27 staff and a turnover of £8 million a year! Gtech was set up by owner Nick Grey in 2001 with the aim of creating a cordless product that could pick up dog hair from carpets. After working his way through the ranks of his old employer’s firm, Vax, Nick developed a talent for designing and creating new products and when the firm was bought out in 2001, Nick decided it was time to create his own independent products. His idea was simple – to create cordless floorcare products because nobody likes big, heavy products that need to be plugged in and are noisy. His first invention, which became the company’s name, was an immediate success, selling out of retail stores across the country. Today, Nick has sold over twenty million of his power sweeper devices and grown his business to design and manufacture a wide number of cordless household appliances. Nick spent every working day on his very first product as he aimed to create a sweeper that was the first ever to pick up animal hairs and his work ethic has not changed since. Everyone at the company follows a policy that every little detail has to be as good as everybody else’s; one weak link and no matter how good your own part of the product is,’ you are wasting your time. It is an ethic that has enabled Gtech to keep their products at the forefront of the UK market in stores that have housed their work for many loyal years. With ten years of success behind them, Gtech are concentrating on developing their brand and new products with ever-better performance. Just this month, Gtech have launched their first commercial product for shops, offices and restaurants – a cordless power sweeper with a two hour run time and anti-bacterial protection. And by spending more on marketing and staff to support a new marketing strategy that will propel the company into the upmarket end of the consumer market, Gtech looks set for another decade of overwhelming success.

Willenhall based Pennine Prostamp LLP was set up in January 2010 with just one worker to supply chain links to Yorkshire assembler Pennine Industrial Equipment Limited, which has ploughed £500,000 into the business. However, the firm has proved so successful that already it has taken on three extra staff, an apprentice and two extra machines to cope with demand. Now, the business is in talks with firms throughout the UK as they look to secure the contracts that will see their work taken outside of their parent company.

inviting other work in the high quality end of the precision pressing market. We are no longer specialising in just one type of product but are offering our services to cover all aspects of metals pressing. We are able to offer a one-stopshop for clients who can visit us with a design brief and, working with our partners within the industry we are able to aid with product design, manufacture tooling, and supply finished product including any special finishes such as plating or painting. Through my time in the industry I have established important relationships with a variety of supply partners and we can call upon their expertise to ensure our customers receive a finished product to the highest level of quality”.

The chain links manufactured by Pennine Prostamp form part of a conveyor belt that is later sold onto bottle factories in over 70 countries including vineyards in Chile, perfumes in France and vodka distilleries in Russia. Set up due to the apathy experienced over three previous external suppliers, Pennine Prostamp is run by Mr Hallam, who has over 25 years experience in the metal pressings trade and is able to provide a dedicated, personal service to both Pennine Industrial Equipment Ltd and now, other firms.

Further expansion of the current suite of machinery is planned within the next few weeks with the addition of a new process which will involve cropping profiled wire. It is envisaged that this extra diversity will open up further opportunities for the company.

The expansion was announced with two open days at the company’s site, just off Neachells Lane, where other firms were invited to tour Pennine Prostamp’s facilities and learn more about how they operate. So successful were the open days that already – only a month later – the company has received a host of enquiries that could turn into potential business partnerships. Mr Hallam comments: “We will still be supplying Pennine Industrial Equipment Ltd but are also

Family-run holiday firm stages GIANT birthday party!

A family-run company, Modern Roofs Ltd carry out expensive repairs and maintenance complete with a dedicated metal decking and cladding division. Trading from their Leicester base, the firm has built a reputation over the last few decades as one of few companies that offer a quality service without charging over the odds for equipment and call-outs.

local holiday company is to celebrate its 20th birthday in style... with almost 200 of its customers. Laver Holidays runs a popular weekend away every year as a reunion for people who travel with them time and again. But this year’s special event – to celebrate two decades in business – has been a runaway success.

Laver Holidays now offers cruises and flightbased holidays as well as coach tours and excursions, with customers so loyal that several of them have been to every one of Laver’s 13 ‘reunion’ weekends! Many more have been travelling with Laver for ten years or more.

“We’ll have to stop taking bookings soon because there are no hotel rooms left!”

The 20th Birthday Party is a three-day trip to a plush hotel in the Pennines, with entertainment each night... including a ‘star turn’ from the Laver family: “It will be good to see everyone,” said Tony, whose son, daughter-in-law and even a granddaughter work at the company. “Many of our customers have become lifelong friends, too.”

Tony, along with his wife, Jean, took the plunge into running his own tour business when the coach company he worked for ceased trading: “I was offered the holiday part of the firm, bought it, changed the name and it has gone from strength to strength.”

With fuel prices rocketing for people who once drove to their holiday destination, touring by coach is growing fast. Spreading the fuel cost between 40 coach passengers brings costs right down, while the buying power of Laver Holidays ensures that, on

“It’s taken us by surprise,” said Tony Laver, who set up the Loughborough-based company in 1991. “We expected perhaps 100 people to book but then it grew to 120, and is now heading towards 180 people.

order to reach thirty years of trading as a business, you have to be open to the demands and ideas of your customers – just like J & M Provisions Ltd who this year celebrate their third decade as one of the region’s best independent food wholesalers. Originally set up to supply meat and cheese to the butchery and delicatessen trades, J & M Provisions Ltd underwent a huge development when purchased by current owner John Gardiner in 1999. After listening to their client base and studying the market, John decided to introduce more products to a wider range of companies, merging his own small business with J & M Provisions Ltd. The result is a family-run business that is small enough to care but large enough to offer some leading brand names to independent wholesalers across the region. With a fleet of vehicles at their disposal, J & M Provisions Ltd offer fresh meats, sausages, frozen foods, groceries, soft drinks, canned foods, crisps, snacks and locally produced products to businesses within an 80-mile radius of Gloucester. Furthermore, if there is a product you are after that they do not currently provide, they are more than happy to look into securing new supplier contracts for you.

OWEN’S FAMILY BUTCHERS With over 1500 different products available, delivered whenever you need them, it is not surprising that J & M Provisions Ltd have consistently been the number one choice for a number of regional schools, independent stores and hoteliers for many years. As an ambitious company, the firm is always growing and recently added packaging to its list of supplies. J & M Provisions Ltd place a large emphasis on the needs of every individual customer they work with – after all, it is the customers that have helped them reach such a milestone anniversary. By listening to customer feedback, the company is always looking to grow and widen its services. With the promise of always offering a reasonable, competitive price for goods and an ongoing commitment to deliver quality produce reliably and efficiently, it looks as though J & M Provisions will be going strong for many years to come. recent study by Seafish has shown consumers are still happy to go out to eat if they can choose scampi. The great British favourite is enjoying a revival as nostalgic comfort food thrives in this economic down turn. A whopping 38,137,000 portions were enjoyed “out of home” in the 12 months leading up to the end of October 2009 (Source Seafish Protein Comparison Report October 2009). It should come as no surprise to find out that 69% of this massive number of portions has been eaten by over 35s - the age group most likely to remember the 70s and 80s when scampi in the basket was a fashionable meal in pubs. It seems that the love affair between scampi and pubs continues with 17,000,000 portions being eaten in pubs in the last 12 months which must be good news for the demoralised British landlord. Whitby Seafoods, the UK’s largest scampi manufacturer, have

supplied their famous Whitby Scampi to pubs and restaurants around the UK for 25 years, and supply more pubs and restaurants than any other brand. They offer pubs free Whitby window stickers, table tent cards and swingboards to tempt the pub customer into ordering a meal with their drinks. Despite scampi’s slightly retro image Whitby Scampi has some very modern health credentials to boast with a portion containing less than 2g saturated fat, iron, calcium and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids, which are linked to healthy brain and heart function and development.

Celebrating over 70 years in business H

aynes Catering Butchers is a small, family-run business started by Eric Haynes in 1939, at 62 Springhill, Birmingham. At the end of the war Eric was joined by his brother Chris, with the two of them building up to 23 retail butchers shops, at its peak in the late 60s and 70s.

Arthur’s wife, Virginia, took over the sales side of the business.

Chris unfortunately died in 1982 and Eric’s son, Arthur took over Chris’ shop. It was at this time with the development of supermarkets that Arthur started in Haynes Catering Butchers from the firm’s depot in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. In a very short while the catering supplies side of the business took over from the retail. Arthur’s wife, Virginia, took over the sales side of the business. This has flourished to this very day and is now run from their premises in Acocks Green, which has a retail side as well as a catering department. With no plans to wind down the company just yet, Arthur and Virginia are looking forward to driving the business forward, meaning that the firm is set to enjoy many more years of success. Pinfold Motors pride themselves on being able to offer a one-stop shop for customers. In their fully

As a member of the Autosafe Group, they offer a 12-month guarantee on all parts fitted and always look to deliver exceptional customer service to each and every client. In fact. the firm has become known for the friendly and personal experience they offer customers. 1st Class Hospitality at Hereford United W

hat better place to relax – entertain or even broker a business deal than on the sporting stage of a football club? Hereford United successfully launched their new hospitality programme at the start of the season and are now looking to the future and new horizons. The club, which has a new Chairman in David Keyte and Vice-Chairman in Tim Russon, are working hard to embrace the corporate world and are trying to bring business and sport together for the benefit of all. On top of their Golden Partner Scheme, which offers a season long package of hospitality, sponsorship and advertising the club are keen to welcome more local businesses to their Edgar Street ground to promote, reward or celebrate their own enterprise. The club have refurbished their hospitality rooms and now have three pitch side suites named after three of the club’s greatest players – Colin Addison, John Charles and Terry Paine. The match day experience can kick-off hours before Hereford’s big game. All the

rooms have a full SKY TV package, so on a Saturday you could start by watching the big premiership battle of the day, and then enjoy a drink and a meal before taking your seat in the stand to cheer on the Bulls. After the game you can chose and get to meet your Hereford Man of the Match.

“Coming to a game is a great day out. For a business it can be the chance to relax and network away from the pressures and formality of the office, it can be the chance to reward or say thanks to colleagues or clients and it can also be an opportunity to promote your own company’s service or success.”

Raising Profiles and Connecting Business Social networking has been around for many years and whilst thousands of businesses are signed up to the medium through one social media site or another, very few actually know how to use it correctly to aid their business - that’s where The Unisey Hub comes in. Set up in 2009 by social media marketing expert, Sue Cartwright, The Unisey Hub shows

companies how to combine local networking with social media marketing in order to generate more contacts and more business. The Unisey Hub was originally set up as a Linkedin group as a way of bringing local businesses together and such was the rapid growth of the Hub that it soon won Sue the West Midlands Business Consulting Professional Award 2010 in June last year for her use of social media to boost enterprise in the area. Coming from a background of business consultancy, Sue has developed The Unisey Hub into a thriving business, offering social media coaching, consultancy, workshops and advice for the region’s business community. “I read somewhere that 78% of consumers act upon positive reviews online whereas only 14% of consumers act upon an

advertisement. This is the foundation that The Unisey Hub is built upon – the idea that you should promote yourself but others as well. Integrating social media into existing marketing strategies is a key objective for my coaching, consultancy and workshop programmes – promoting fellow businesses and forming lasting relationships with other professionals is an essential factor in developing new business opportunities and

gaining competitive advantage.” “We already have over 200 professionals contributing to our Linkedin Group which is going from strength to strength. It is all because our tips for success are so simple and easy to implement, actively demonstrating that social networking can be a huge advantage to businesses when used properly.”
