Plans for new Durham Bus Station approved The green light has been given to proposals to replace Durham’s current ageing bus station on North Road with a brand new building.

Planners have given the go-ahead for preparations to start in the autumn, with the current structure set to be demolished in early 2021, so that construction of the new station can begin in the spring. It is hoped that the completed building will open to the public by the summer of 2022.

What can travellers expect from the replacement station?

The designs for the new station are geared towards providing passengers with more overall space in a light and airy setting. Facilities will also be improved, with toilet provision set for a boost – including parent and child and a changing facility – alongside increased seating and space in the passenger circulation and waiting areas.

It is also intended that the new station will provide greater visibility and safety for buses that enter and leave it. This will include increased space for buses to reverse in when leaving bays, as well as better visibility when exiting onto North Road.

Residents should expect to benefit from a safe and attractive space, although the design has also been conceived to give visitors to the city the best possible first impression.

as work takes place. This period will see all bus services moved on-street, with stop locations and timetables advertised in advance.

Big ambitions for the new station – and Durham The council has invested in the station as part of its plans to support County Durham’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will help to improve local transport links, thereby attracting visitors and boosting city-centre footfall – as a consequence, helping the city’s independent retailers, hospitality businesses, and indoor and outdoor market to thrive after the coronavirus outbreak.

Cllr Carl Marshall, cabinet member for economic regeneration at Durham County Council, commented: “We’re delighted to be moving on to the next stage of the regeneration of North Road, with the investment in a brand new, state-ofthe-art bus station for our residents, visitors, and businesses.

“The new station has been designed to create a modern transport hub that fits the historic nature of Durham but also is a safe and welcoming space for those who are coming and going from the city.

“Durham City is very much open for business as usual and we encourage visitors to come and enjoy our excellent facilities and visitor attractions.”

Ingredients • 1 tbsp oil • 4 skin-on chicken legs • 1 red onion , sliced • 1 red pepper , deseeded and sliced • 1 heaped tsp chilli flakes • 2 large garlic cloves , crushed • 200ml white wine • 2 x 400g cans cherry tomatoes • 3 oregano sprigs, plus extra to serve • 150ml chicken stock • 200g fresh spinach • pinch of sugar • 300g pasta 12 | IN&AROUND

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Season the chicken and fry, skin-side down, for 5 mins until golden brown. Remove and set aside.

Horden for the

Durham Heritage Coast

Britain’s

newest railway station opened in the north east on Monday 29th June. It’s at Horden on the Durham Coast line between Middlesbrough and Newcastle, situated between Seaham and Hartlepool stations. I took a visit there when the station was only three weeks old with the intention of walking the coastal path north to Seaham along the cliff tops and alongside the railway. It is a walk that takes over three hours to do, whereas the train only takes eight minutes.

There are not many options at Horden, but further north there is much choice of footpaths – generally alongside the railway is the most direct and along the wiggly route of the coastline is longer, but more scenic.

Since it is not yet marked on any maps, I was unsure where the new station actually was, but it’s at grid reference NZ 447 412, somewhat south of where I expected, but the 1140 train from Newcastle arrived punctually at 1217. Passengers from the south, e.g.

Darlington and Yarm, can change at Thornaby to access the Durham Coast Line.

Before it opened, it was known as Horden Peterlee, but was opened as just Horden which has caused some confusion. My phone’s text messaging translated the three letter code for Horden, HRE, as RYE in East Sussex. And asking for Horden gave a message that info on the London Underground station at Morden could not be given. It will no doubt get sorted soon!

Colonel Harland Sanders September 9th 1890

This month’s notable birthday is finger lickin’ good… yes, it’s the one and only Colonel Sanders!

Best known for being the founder of fast food chicken chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), this wonderful man would have been celebrating his 130th birthday on 9th September.

The story begins in 1952, when Colonel Sanders first started selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. Before he came to establish the chicken restaurant that we’ve all come to know and love (arguably even vegans, too), Sanders worked as a conductor, a fireman, and a railroad labourer – and even did a short stint in the legal world. “Tell us more about the chicken part!” we hear you scream.

In 1952, Sanders franchised his secret recipe ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ for the first time to Pete Harman of South Salt Lake in Utah, the operator of one of the city’s largest restaurants.

Unsurprisingly, because we all know that the secret recipe really is finger lickin’ good, restaurant sales tripled in the first year of selling the product, with a staggering 75% of the increase coming from fried chicken alone!

In June 1980, our beloved Colonel Sanders was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and he died of pneumonia six months later, at the age of 90. He was active right until the month preceding his death, pleasing crowds in that iconic white suit.

So the next time you tuck into a KFC meal this month, raise a wing to celebrate the Colonel’s birthday.

The Five Welfare Needs of Rabbits Diet In the wild rabbits feed on high levels of fibrous grasses. Their digestive systems are designed to be kept in constant motion to get the most of this diet. It is important to feed the correct diets to avoiding dental, digestive and behavioural problems.

Environment Rabbits need plenty of space and enrichment to be happy. Rabbit must be able to lie down fully stretched along the width of their house, be able to take 3 – 4 hops along the length and be able to stand on its back legs without touching the roof.

Behaviour Rabbits need to be able to display their natural behaviours that they would display in the wild such as foraging, tunnelling and digging.

Companionship Rabbits are highly sociable animals and should be kept in at least pairs. Rabbits can become lonely without social interaction from another rabbit, which has negative effects on their behaviour and health.

Funding provided to boost County Durham’s affordable housing supply Durham County Council’s award of significant funds to a leading local housing charity will help to create affordable accommodation across County Durham.

A council and charity working together for a greater good

Durham Action on Single Housing (DASH) has received £175,000 from the local authority, with this money enabling the charity to convert part of its Gilesgate office into self-contained flats.

Cllr Kevin Shaw, the council’s cabinet member for strategic housing and assets, commented: “We are delighted to further develop our working relationship with DASH and this will provide access for a greater number of our most vulnerable people into affordable accommodation.

Four much-needed self-contained flats on the way Having already provided homeless people and those at risk of homelessness with accommodation and support for a number of years, DASH became a Registered Provider of Social Housing in March this year, and the charity is now providing affordable homes for local people to rent.

The council handed the charity the money from its Commuted Sums fund, which is received from housing developers to help support local communities.

The funding will allow DASH to convert the first floor and part of the ground floor of its offices, on the ground floor of Hudson House in Gilesgate, into four self-contained one-bedroom flats, which will all be available for affordable rent.

Durham County Council’s housing solutions team will also work alongside DASH to refer local

“We know that the part funding we have provided will help to address housing needs within local communities and by working together with our partners, we can continue to ensure that the services offered can be best delivered to those in greatest need.

“The accommodation that will be provided at Hudson House will have a strong emphasis on local connections. I will therefore look forward to the refurbishment being completed so that we can start welcoming local residents to apply for the flats, or use the referral process to support them into housing.”

DASH chair Les Punton added: “We are delighted to have secured part funding from Durham County Council and Homes England to develop our headquarters at Hudson House to provide four more self-contained flats which are much needed in the area.
