FlexAbility Fitness raises over £1000 for St Cuthbert’s Hospice FlexAbility Fitness, a gym based in Tursdale Business Park, took on an epic challenge for St Cuthbert’s Hospice, resulting in them raising over £1000.

What was the challenge?

On Saturday 4th of June, the gym hosted a “Flexathalon” and encouraged their members to row a full marathon on the gym’s rowing machines, cycle 140 miles “coast to coast” on their exercise bikes and run a full marathon together, over the course of 24 hours.

A team of over 50 gym members completed the challenge in 15 minute time slots, managing to raise over £1000 for St Cuthbert’s Hospice. Donations were still pouring in after the challenge was complete, as more fundraising efforts took place.

Daniel Long, the owner of FlexAbility Fitness, described the event as a real team effort, saying: “The guys were all amazing and I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the #TeamFlexability family for working together on the day, showing up, working hard and helping us to conquer our challenge!”

Notable Birthday:

Annie Oakley

Anything you can shoot, she can shoot better…this month, our notable birthday is the inspiration for the hit movie musical, Annie Get Your Gun, Annie Oakley!

Born on August 13th 1860, Annie Oakley was born around five miles east of North Star, Ohio.

Annie was the sixth of her parents' nine children, and began providing for her family after her father passed away in 1866.

She began trapping at the age of seven, before learning to shoot and hunt at the age of eight.

Due to Annie’s prowess with a gun, and her selling the hunted game to locals in her village, Annie was able to pay off her family's mortgage by fifteen.

It was around this time that Annie met her future husband, Frank E. Butler. Butler had offered a $100 prize to any fancy shooter who could beat him in a match. After missing on his 25th shot, Butler lost the match. Soon afterwards, he began courting Annie and the two married, though they did not have any children.

The pair joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in 1885.

During this time, she experienced an intense rivalry with Lillian Smith, a sharp shooter who was eleven years Oakley’s junior.

After temporarily leaving the show, Annie returned in 1889, just in time for the Paris Exposition. This tour cemented Annie’s status as America’s first female star and earned her more than any other performer in the show, other than Bill himself.

Aside from performing, Annie’s passion was self-defence for women, and she became a huge advocate for women being able to take an active role in combat and taught over 15,000 girls how to use a gun.

Later in life, Annie remained an activist for 16 | IN&AROUND

women’s rights and other causes, and continued to support young women that she knew. In 1922, Annie and Frank were in a car accident that forced her to wear a steel brace on her right leg.

In 1925, Annie's health started to decline, until she died of pernicious anaemia, on November 3rd 1926, at the age of 66. It is believed that Frank was so grieved by her death, that it caused his own death just eighteen days later.

Annie Oakley’s legacy endures into the 21st century, thanks to Hollywood and history. Her life is captured on film, in television and even on Broadway and West End stages, as well as in museums and history books.

Microchipping What would you do if your pet went missing?

Posters? Facebook campaign? Ring around local vets?

Well if they are microchipped they could be easily, and quickly, returned to you! Vets, dog wardens and RSPCA inspectors all carry microchip scanners which provides them with a unique identification number.

On contacting the database this number is linked to your details – meaning we can phone you straight away and get your pet home! Some scanners will even instantly inform us if an animal is lost or stolen!

Dogs All dogs need to be legally microchipped by the breeder by the age of eight weeks old. It is also a legal requirement to keep the details registered

It is not currently a legal requirement to microchip cats, although this has been discussed by the government as recently as this year.

Cats roam long distances and are not uncommonly ‘rescued’ by well-meaning neighbours, or presented by strangers after road traffic collisions – so ensuring they are microchipped is very useful. Microchip activated catflaps can also prevent unwanted visitors!

Other Species All but the most tiny of species can be microchipped – although it may not be necessary for animals kept in secure tanks or vivaria. Ferrets are definitely worth getting microchipped; parrots can fly and tortoises are remarkable good at escaping and wandering off.

It is also a requirement of taking cats, dogs and ferrets abroad that they are microchipped.

Why are they there?

Pressure washer, Radio, Sealants. Well, the majority of our work is reviving old driveways so we definitely need the pressure washer for that, we also love to listen to a bit of smooth radio too whilst sealing either block paving, tarmac or imprinted concrete

The transformations that we create, and seeing our customers’ faces at the end of the job.

Directions Step one...

Put the noodles in a bowl, cover with boiling water and set aside to soften. Heat the grill to medium and place a piece of foil on the grill rack. Mix 1 tsp of the miso with the vinegar, paprika and 1 tbsp water. Spread over the salmon and grill for 6-8 mins until flaky and cooked.

Step two...

Heat the oil in a wok and stir-fry the ginger, pepper and leeks over a high heat for a few mins until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 1 min more.

Drain the noodles, reserve 2 tbsp water and mix with the remaining miso.

Step three...

Add the drained noodles, miso liquid and spinach to the wok and toss over the heat until the spinach wilts. Pile onto plates, top with the salmon and any juices and serve.

Ingredients -

2 nests wholemeal noodles (100g) 1 ½ tsp brown miso 2 tsp balsamic vinegar ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 skinless wild salmon fillets (230g) 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 30g ginger , cut into matchsticks 1 green pepper , deseeded and cut into strips 2 leeks (165g), thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves , finely grated 160g baby spinach

Hunmanby for Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, and Filey

For

a summer outing by train, the east wolds of Yorkshire offer an enticing prospect. Take a trip to Hunmanby, on the line from Scarborough to Hull, and it’s a short walk to the new Spirit of Yorkshire distillery, from which the products are now matured and for sale.

From the north east you get there on a train to York where you head north east to the coast at Scarborough. You can check your routing at nationalrail.com, now in its twentieth year of booking rail tickets and answering enquiries. If you have a short connection, change trains at Seamer, the station outside of Scarborough where the lines from Hull and York meet. If you have a long connection wait at Scarborough itself, may be on the long bench, about 139m, which is reputed to be the longest in the world. The small island-platformed station at Seamer is great for quick changes, not so good for a longer wait.

Through Filey with its unusual covered train shed, to Hunmanby, you take a left on leaving the station uphill on the Bridlington Road, passing a tyre recycling facility (I did not know tyres could smell as much!) to the industrial estate where the distilliery is located. Tours run daily at 1100, 1300 and 1500, with no 1500 tour on Sunday. Book at spiritofyorkshire.com. The owning family are farmers and brewers, so the process is kept in house from field to bottle, since they even bottle the spirit on site.

Time your journey to spend the rest of the day at Filey Bay itself, with trains covering the trip from Hunmanby back to Filey about 20 past the hour. Having my bag from a few days away, I elected to avoid the footbridge and take the flat path out on to the Muston Road. As a regular depositor of luggage, I checked the Radical website to see if I could leave it somewhere, but Filey was not covered. (Radical works with general dealers, computer stores and Indian restaurants etc to look after items cheaply.) I turned right around the end of Station Avenue and into the compact town centre. In the 1850s the developer John Wilkes Unett, completed the Crescent, a grand row of houses on the cliff top to provide quality accommodaiton for passengers arriving by train. The railway had arrived a little earlier in 1846. Another developer, Sir Billy Butlin, built an even bigger site to the south which was due to open before the Second World War, but instead became RAF Hunmanby Moor.

Eventually opening his holiday camp in 1946, Butlins traded until 1983 and a peak capacity the 11,000 campers eclipsed the 6,000 people in the town itself.

There are five miles of golden sandy beach at Filey, and to the north bracing walks may be had at Filey Brigg, a promontory of land jutting out into the sea. It’s one of the best stretches of beach in the UK, with a range of eateries and entertainment to please the visitor. It was a lovely afternoon and I enjoyed my potter about. On return to the station for a well-connected trip from Filey, via Seamer, to York and north, I noticed a neat sign in the window of the taxi company: Left Luggage 50p. I wish I had passed by before! An unencumbered walk around a town is always better than hauling a bag.

Laying on no shortage of director Baz Luhrmann’s famed maximalist approach, Elvis is, in at least some ways, the rip-roaring and even irreverent spectacle the Elvis legend arguably needed. It is a biopic dedicated to dispelling the funerary gloom that has long accompanied images of the King since his passing in 1977, and largely succeeds in communicating the energy and subversiveness that Presley stood for in the eyes of a generation of fans in his own time.

Much of that success, of course, can be attributed to the sheer physical and emotional electricity of Austin Butler in the titular role. Embodying an easy androgyny that might initially have you believing you have inadvertently walked into a screening of The Phil Oakey Story, Butler’s Elvis conveys sufficient rebellious zest, smouldering physicality, playfulness, and vulnerability to convince us of the enormity of the pop-culture phenomenon – and precisely why that was so.

Less sympathy is extended to a moribund and past-the-times Hank Snow (the ‘50s country legend portrayed

by David Wenham), and even less in the case of Tom Hanks’ Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s long-time manager, who takes on the narration and framing of the entire tale.

From his deathbed in 1997, the man alternately known as the Dutch-born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk desperately attempts to recast the film’s own suggestion that he played a less-than-ethical 44 | IN&AROUND

part in Elvis’s rise and fall. He cannot help being haunted by his own retelling, one of the most memorable moments seeing him insist when presented with an exhausting and ailing Elvis, “the only thing that matters is that that man gets up on that stage tonight.”

Also played upon to great extent is the King’s channelling of Black music, Elvis being situated as a joyous recipient and appreciator of the sounds of such influential figures as B. B. King (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), Little Richard (Alton Mason) and Big Mama Thornton (Shonka Dukureh). We certainly come away feeling educated on Elvis’s enchantment with gospel and blues from his youth, even if Luhrmann makes little attempt at a deeper confrontation with the complexities of how Black art has historically moved through white spaces.

Along similar lines, other, darker elements of the Elvis mythology are largely sidestepped in what remains, in the round, a high-octane extravaganza that keeps the drama largely onstage, rather than off. It is territory in which Luhrmann is comfortable, with the result being more of a bracing jukebox than a source of greatly piercing insight into any of the men – or women – behind the King.
