Of course, Merlin’s parents are extremely proud of him and what he’s trying to achieve. The pair pointed out that his grandma loved the outdoors, so Merlin’s efforts allowed the family the perfect opportunity to remember her by doing an activity she would have Speakingloved.
A Yorkshire lad has set himself a huge challenge; to climb the 10 highest peaks in England, before his 11th birthday, to raise money for St Cuthbert’s MerlinHospice.Rowell, from Kirk Hammerton, set himself this challenge after his Grandma Kathleen was cared for at St Cuthbert’s Hospice last year. After talking to his Mam Hester and Dad Andrew, they came up with Merlin’s 10. Merlin and his grandma Merlin described his Grandma as “lots of fun”. He says they used to fish for tadpoles, make dinosaurs and go on the best adventures, so he felt it was only right to go on an adventure of his own in her memory. He also pointed out that his grandma was really well looked after at St Cuthbert’s, and he knows that they need a lot of money to care for people the way that they do. So far, Merlin and his parents have climbed five of the ten peaks they’re aiming to complete in their challenge. The team started out in March by climbing Helvellyn in the Lake District, then Cross Fell in April. May saw the family rise up two peaks; Skiddaw and Great Gable. In August, they conquered Bowfell.

The staff at St Cuthbert’s are overwhelmed by Merlin’s support and generosity. Most of all, they are blown away by how young Merlin is. In fact, Sarah Donkin, the Communications and Marketing Coordinator at the hospice says that she’s never heard of such an amazing challenge being completed by someone so young. She went on to say: “Without incredible fundraisers such as Merlin, we wouldn’t be able to provide the level of compassionate care that we do for the many families who need us each year.”

John Tatum became a prominent inspiration for Faraday, especially after he attended his lectures on natural philosophy. Faraday’s brother gave him the shilling it would cost to attend, after being impressed by his brother’s devotion to the Faradaysciences.was later asked by a customer of the bookshop, William Dance, if he would like to attend a lecture by Sir Humprhy Davy. During the talk, Faraday took so many notes that he was able to bind them into a 300-page book, which he sent to Davy as a tribute. He had also begun to carry out more advanced scientific research, building an electric battery using copper coins and zinc discs, and using it to decompose chemicals.
Despite being born on September the 22nd, 1791, to a very poor family, Michael Faraday went on to become one of the greatest scientists in history. At a time when the sciences were typically preserved for those born into wealth, Faraday defied all odds and made incredible discoveries about electricity. Michael was the third child of James and Margaret Faraday. Despite his family living in extreme poverty, Michael attended school until he was 13, and was then apprenticed to a book binder. It was during his time working as a book binder, that Michael began to educate himself and developed an interest in science. He would spend all of his free time after his working day, reading books about science, and eventually started spending his wage on chemicals and apparatus to prove that what he was reading was true.
Michael Faraday died on the 25th of August, 1867 at the age of 75. He and his wife Sarah had no children and he even turned down a burial in Westminster Abbey, alongside Britain’s Kings, Queens and the likes of Isaac Newton. Instead, his grave can be seen in London’s Highgate Cemetery, alongside his wife.

Over the years that followed, Faraday was given many promotions at the Institution, rising to the Fullerian Professor of Chemistry by 1833. In 1848 and 1858 he was offered the Presidency of the Royal Society, but turned it down on both Faraday’soccasions.most notable discoveries include electromagnetic rotation (the basis for the motor), gas liquefaction and refrigeration, discovering the Benzene, electromagnetic induction, electrolysis, and the Faraday Cage.
After Sir Davy was injured in an accident, Faraday managed to negotiate being his note taker for a few days. He then wrote to Davy, asking for a position as an assistant, which he was granted after another assistant was fired for misconduct. By the age of 21, Faraday was working at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and living in a room in the attic. After just seven months of work, Davy asked Faraday to accompany him as his secretary on an 18 month tour of Europe.

To make the crumble topping, weigh the remaining 25g butter and 25g sugar into a bowl, add the rest of the flour and a pinch of salt. Rub the ingredients together between your fingertips until they are a crumbly consistency. Mix in the flaked almonds, then scatter the crumble over the cake. Scatter with the 1 tbsp caster sugar and bake for 45 mins until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Step four... Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4, butter a 20cm square tin and line with baking parchment. Beat 200g of the butter and 200g of the sugar together in a large bowl using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until well combined. When smooth and creamy, add 225g of the flour, the baking powder, almonds, milk and vanilla, and mix to combine.

If you choose to stay close to a station anywhere in England, Wales or Scotland, you can have a low carbon holiday and with plenty of opportunity to visit interesting places with little e ect on the environment. I was in the area of Church Stretton in southern Shropshire during July and visited Welshpool (for Powis Castle), and Shrewsbury, staying for a few nights. Rail strikes notwithstanding, which constrained our activity on 27th July, my wife and I particularly enjoyed our visit to the town of Ludlow, which lies on the Welsh Marches WithLine. an o -peak day return, you can break your journey as o en as you like in both directions, which enabled us to stop o at Craven Arms (where the Heart of Wales veers o to the southwest towards Swansea, calling at 28 mostly tiny stations on the way), to visit Stokesay Castle. An o -peak return from Shrewbury to Ludlow, without discounts, is £14.30. Cross the car park at Craven Arms – noting the times of trains onward later in the day –and turn right to walk south along the A49 road out of the village to nd English Heritage’s wonderful Stokesay Castle, which was built by Lawrence of Ludlow from 1285 onwards, and he had the King’s permission to crenelate (fortify) his manor house in 1291. He traded in wool and became a very rich man and the collection of buildings testify to his wealth. ere’s a good tea room at Stokesay to sample a er climbing up the towers of Stokesay Castle, before walking back into Craven Arms for the onward train to Ludlow. ere is an alternative to walking back to Craven Arms station: the Minsterley Motors service 435 from Shrewsbury runs hourly, from Stokesay about on the hour, and takes just ten minutes into Ludlow. My home village in Co. Durham has three listed buildings. Ludlow has over 500, including the famous Feathers Inn, pictured, which must be one of the most published buildings in England. ere are black and white half-timbered structures wherever you look, interspersed with later Georgian and Victorian buildings. ere is a range, a cornucopia even, of independent shops around the town, for example a well-stocked cheese shop called e Mousetrap where we tried several of the cheeses on o er, and the lady looked a er our choices so we did not need to carry them around whilst they stayed refrigerated on a hot day. ere is a hedgehog rescue centre called Pricklebums, opposite the clock shop on Quality Square, visitors by

appointment only. It must be one of the few Hedgehog Hospitals. We found a pleasant place to eat at Changs ai Bar and Restaurant where the service was very fast and the Asian food delicious, ere are no high-rise buildings in Ludlow, so the tower of St. Laurence’s church stands proud. One of only 18 churches given 5* rating in Simon Jenkins’ “England's ousand Greatest Churches” and the views from the top are magni cent. To the west is the mostly ruined Ludlow Castle, owned by the Anglo-Welsh Powis Estates, and to the north east you can watch the trains running through Ludlow Station, and make a mental note to visit that restored Victorian railway shed close to the station which is the home of the Ludlow Brewing Company, before rejoining your train. Don’t attempt Ludlow in a day – it's too far - but as part of a few days away, based, say, in Shrewsbury, it’s a town well worth a visit.

Going into this movie, I was expecting to have already seen all of the best bits in the trailer. I could not have been more wrong. The all-star cast of Bullet Train, which includes Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King and Sandra Bullock, provide two hours of non-stop laughs and action sequences that constantly has the audience asking

From the outset, this film is a laugh a minute, beginning with fantastic banter between Pitt's character, Ladybug, and his mentor Maria (voiced by Bullock), who remains unseen until the end of the journey, but regularly provides support to her charge. Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry play siblings Tangerine and Lemon respectively. The easy banter between the two characters, despite Lemon’s eccentricities, makes for a compelling watch for the viewer, and I even foundanticipatingmyself their next on
Ladybug’s inner monologue. It is established very early on that Ladybug is seeing a therapist, to attempt to work through some of the trauma he has developed during his time working as an assassin. feel that a major plot point within the movie was overlooked, in favour of some of the comedy moments, and to give more screen time to some of the bigger names in the film.
Throughout the movie, we are reminded that Yuichi Kimura (”The Father”) has boarded the train to avenge the attempt that was made on his son’s life. We find out very little to further this plot throughout the movie, and it simply serves as a device to further the journey of the other characters featured in the film. It must be noted however, that every named character who is introduced to the plot, furthers it somehow. Every character is cleverly interlinked, and has come across another in some way, shape or form in the past, before finally meeting face to face on the Bullet Train. Discovering each character's connection to another was an aspect of the film that kept me on the edge of my seat, even if some of the links were simply comedic in value.
Overall, Bullet Train is a lighthearted story that I certainly recommend to anyone who isn’t squeam ish, and enjoys a good laugh. It’s certainly one to take your friends along to, especially if you enjoy laugh out loud moments, and analogies of the human psyche using Thomas the Tank Engine metaphors.
