We want to help our readers to know us so they can understand who is writing, who is behind these words… so that they can understand the articles way better!

So dear person with this magazine on his/ her hands, here you have us!

Maider Nieves: I am 16-year-old girl (will be turning 17 the 5th March) who is absolutely passionate about languages. I also love literature and all the possible senses, reading (being Fyodor Dostoyevsky possibly my favourite classical writer) but also writing. I consider myself a pretty positively idealistic and dreamy so I like to say that I am kinda dreamchaser! Naia Macho: I’m 16 years old but in few months I will turn 17. I love dancing and I have been going to dancing lessons since I was 7. In my free time I usually watch TV series, specifically the ones that are related to mystery or science fiction. I do not have a clear idea of what I’m going to study in a near future, but between my choices there are: psychology, journalism, pedagogy or something related with children’s education.

Social Education Project The Social Education Project is an optional activity that students from high school can do. A large number of differents options are given to each student. Among these options there are different centres where you can collaborate. For example, us, the members of the magazine are collaborating in “Bakuva”, “Fundación síndrome de down” and “Adoratrices”. “Fundación sindrome de down”, is a centre where people with down syndrome or other intellectual disabilities go in search of help and support for them and their families. We collaborate in a group of people of our age that work different topics such as: toxic relationships, sexuality, anger… On Saturdays they go to a leisure club where they take part in different activities, for example, on Christmas they went skiing. Then on special dates they do a special celebration or a party. ‘Bakuva’ is an educative centre where immigrant children go in order to improve their school efficiency. There are children who have more difficulties to learn, maybe because of their different language, culture, way of thinking,... In Bakuva children must do homework on their own, but if they have any doubt about it we, the volunteers, try to help them. “Adoratrices” is a home for the elderdy, where the volunteers spend time with the women that are in better conditions than the other ones. They tell the volunteers about their lifes, such as: their experiences, anecdotes, how they have finished there and more. All in all, the Social Education Project has helped us to open our eyes and to notice that are a lot of people that live in different situations. Because of that now we can empathize more with them.

A SELF-EXPERIENCE IN “PES” (By: Maider Nieves) (*Bonus part for Social Education Project article)

Not only are we taking part in some foundations as the previously mentioned ones, but as a matter of fact, one of our publishers on this magazine goes every week to an independent group that doesn’t put an official name to themselves. They work in Quinta Parroquia in some free classrooms that used to be for catechesis. It consists on a group of volunteers who help migrants that have just arrived to our city or have been living here for some years and still struggle with our language, Spanish. These migrants come from every single place in the world you can imagine, leading us to have more nationalities than firstly thought about. Nevertheless, the most numerous immigrants come from both Algeria and Morocco. People are divided in classes separated by their level, in turn classified by how much knowledge they have (Basic reading, they can -or not- have a conversation…) which is usually shown in spontaneous talking activity with a teacher. There is some people who don’t know how to write the Latin Alphabet, some others that wouldn’t even have to need of taking classes… there is a bit of everything. Our writer in this school-magazine claims to be really happy for being able to participate in such a beautiful activity. She remarks the ability these migrants have to learn faster than expected and also the will, interest and attitude they show. She is in charge of a class that originally started with 8 pupils (depending on the week, the number could variate and decrease due to personal problems these migrants could have, a new work they found....) but as soon as 2018 started, more and more people started coming to the classes, most of them (not least all them) with no idea about our language; This was the reason why new teachers were hired and new classes opened.

The volunteer and writer on this magazine (who will not put her name here just because others didn’t before) noticed how when she told anyone where was she volunteering, people reacted as if they were shocked and even letting out some comments full of offensive stereotypes, if readers know what we mean. But the true behind this experience is that after meeting this extraordinary people who are making an effort on integrating, they are no more “The arab guy living in San Francisco”, “The eastern european that scares me” or even “The *insert F word here* gypsy” as people usually refers to.

No. They are Hamza, Chioma, Hamid, Ahmed… They have a name. They have a living. They have a family. You know who they are now, how tough it was for them to reach Spain by using dinghies, the problems they have to deal with… So, as she and other workmates say, don’t dare to refer to them scornfully. They are after all, humans like you and I. And both them and us have many things to learn from the each other. Thanks to these classes, the volunteer discovered we are not so different in reality, and that it sometimes seemed that she’s the one receiving lesson indeed.

BEFORE YOU READ: What’s the TIL Project?

BERRIOLIMPIADAK: The cusp of the TIL project

T.I.L is the acronym of Tratamiento Integrado de las Lenguas (This is, Integrated Treatment of Languages), a new Linguistic Project proposed for several grades in, for example, our school. To mention some examples, 4th of ESO did it about sexism, and 1st of BATX. did it on Olympics.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

On December 20, 2017 the school Berrio-Otxoa organized an unusual event between first baccalaureate students. This event was calle ``Berriolimpiadak´´ and took place in the enormous sport center off the school. The ``Berriolimpiadak´´ lasted approximately 3 hours. This sporting event was realized by pupils, who prepared this in subjects like Latin, Spanish and P.E. The event was based on the Olympics of the ancient Greece. In those Olympics the main activities were jump; the one who jumps further away wins, discus; the one who throw it further away wins; Long distance run; the one who ends first the 4 laps wins and then combat; the one who stays lonely in the middle of the circle wins. While the participants were participating students and teachers were looking and encouraging the participants. Those cheers were so helpful for people because they help them bringing themselves up.

greece they were the people in charge of the olympic fire and in charge off doing things correctly. Their entrance was spectacular and after that the traditional music started and activities get started. As I said before four modalities were done. In each modality was one winner, so at the end off all the activities all the winners won a prize. This prize was the same one as in ancient Greece, a laurel wreath. This crown was done by pupils.

After that all the winners and the participants take a picture together because the important thing wasn't to won, it was having fun.

This event was very successful and every student enjoyed it so it might be done next year. next year

The show started with six girls called ``vestales´´. In the ancient

The first Olympic Games were hold in Olympia (Greece), city that give the name to the games, in the 776 b.C? Alexander the Great was one of the most famous participants!

INTERVIEW: OPINION ABOUT SCHOOL FROM AN OUTSIDER Today, we are here with a student’s parent who will tell us how she sees Berriotxoa from an outsider’s stance. Let’s see what will we discover! (*Note, I=Interviewer / P=Parent) (*Note 2: The interviewee prefers not to tell her name) “Berriotxoa is a good centre that I cho-

sed, and I am sure other parents agree, because is a school I share values with” (Interviewer: Maider Nieves) Interviewer: Well first of all, good afternoon, and thank you very much for accepting the interview. You are going to help us a lot! A parent: Thank you for choosing me as the interviewee! (Interviewer giggles) I: I’d like to start by asking you what general idea do you have about this school P: Well see, Berriotxoa is a good centre that I chosed, and I am sure other parents agree, because is a school I share values with I: And could you deepen more on that answer please? I mean, which are those values you identify with? P: Love and vocation for school, studies…, and also the fact that kids learn principles like respect, solidarity, fellowship… I: How did you first heard about Berriotxoa? Maybe you have been living in the neighbourhood since ever or… (Parent interrupts) P: Oh no, no, I am not (giggles) A friend of mine told me about it. She was a former student and she even inscribed her children in Berriotxoa, so you see, now here are my children too I: Oh I see, okay. And does Berriotxoa live up to your first impression and expectations? P: Yeah, it does. However, I’d like to remark that it is slightly changing in sense of familiarity and it looks like there is too much improvisation. It past times, teachers used to be lifelong, they used to know the students deeper… etc. Now, teachers have changed and you don’t really know if a new one won’t stay next year even if he or she is a great professor. I: Alright. Is there anything else you are not really convinced about regarding school?

what’s the fuss about on Instagram and other social networks. Is it really so important to post that much pictures and videos about every single thing students do? I don’t think so! I: I shouldn’t be taking a stance on this, but I admit that I agree with you on this point. Anyway, I am sure that there is still some positive things about my school, right? P: Yeah, totally. There is a lot of great things other schools could learn from yours, starting from sports-facilities to all the different extracurriculars available, such as athletics, groups of free-time “Astibiltokia”... to name a few I: I am glad! On the other hand, what’s your opinion on the classes? P: I am afraid I cannot answer to that, since I am not inside or taking part on them I: Oh really? Nothing, nothing really? P: (Thinks for some seconds) Well actually… I: Yes? P: I am really dissatisfied with the way laptops have been brought to classes. You might be wondering why, so, well, neither pupils and parents nor teachers were in fact ready for that. I: Okay, I will write this down too. To finish the interview, is there something you’d like us and the responsibles of school to know or be aware of? P: Little I have add. Maybe just change the timetable so that students can have a free afternoon. I know that this system is being used in many other successful schools, and their students can easily practice sport, do homework and other activities. I don’t have much more to say. I am really happy with the education my children are receiving overall. I: I am sure kids will absolutely agree with that change (laughs). I am happy to hear that you are mostly satisfied with Berriotxoa anyway. Again, thank you for your help! P: You are very welcome!

P: I am not sure if you’ll able to translate this word, which by the way, you teenagers love, “Postureo” for your English project (both interviewee and interviewer laughs), but yet I think there is so much of it. I don’t really understand

FIGHTING FOR EQUALITY In our school we fight for equality too. Specifically, the club that supports this idea is called “Txoko morea”. It was created 2 years ago when the Basque government suggested this idea in different schools of the autonomous community. We gather every Friday at three o’clock. The major aim of the club is to raise awareness in our school about gender violence by doing projects. This year we have improved some things; for example this year we don’t talk only about gender inequalities, we have started to talk about some important social movements such as: lgbt movement or black lives matter movement. By this we want to reach the total equality as possible between all the sexualities, gender and races in our school. In the club we are working in different projects, as you can see in the school corridor we have purple board where we put up articles, and interesting news. Recently we hang a world map where we could see in how many countries was accepted the patriarchy. Every Friday a different person prepares the meeting and we talk about different issues, For example two weeks ago we ended up talking about cultural appropriation and last week we talked about sexist behaviour that were perfectly accepted by the society. This year we have had a special guest, a person came to the club and gave us a workshop about sexism, he will come back soon to talk about sexuality. To finish we would like to invite anyone interested since all the members are from 1st of Bachillerato, and when we finish the school we would like the club to continue. We also want to make clear that if you came or visit the club once that you don’t have to come every Friday. Anyone can come whenever he/she wants, without any obligation.

EQUALITY BUS On December 1, 2017 the school Berrio-Otxoa organized a little trip to a equality bus. This bus was located on Republica de Begoña street. This location is not the only one, the bus has been moving around Bilbao. This bus is there every year in order to help people konwin how important is equality in aur society. The main reason for the existence off this bus is an obvious reason , sexism. Every day in every country in the world there is a woman suffering this types of abuses. Nowadays in our day a day life we can see little things like jokes or comments that are offensive for women. This bus has already publish a campaign in order to quit this little things.

Our school apart from having a special club for equality, students take part in different activities like ``Beldur barik´´ which is a competition organized by Emakunde where we can see short films about women and the abuses they suffer. At this time our school decided going to this bus with 2 CSE students. There in the bus a girl specialized in this kind of subject tell them about today's situation. The apart from that they saw some short films and videos. Eventually the finished their chat discussing and defending their own ideas. One day later the equality club of the school went to this bus and there talked about which things are right and which things are wrong… etcetera In our school we think that make aware of these things is very important for young people so then in the future they would behave correctly in face of this problems.

REQUESTS ON LAST WE COLD,RAIN AND THE PLAYGROUND. We all know that with the arrival of the winter the playgrounds start getting colder and colder and It's not doable to be outdoors and when It's raining is impossible to get a place without getting wet. In the last two weeks some students have agreed to let in the suggestions postbox some letters talking about the problem. In that letters they also demand a place where the students can go on the playgrounds. One of the suggestions is to let students stay in classroom,I t´s hotter ther and the students can do their homeworks or study.

COMPUTERS AND MOUSES. In the last month too many computers can´t be used. This was caused because of the scarcity of the mice on good conditions. Some students have suggested to buy some new mice and replace all the old ones.Sometimes the problem It's also that some students change the mice places so then you must change it or find a good mouse to work.

WIFI. Last year the school installed wifi around all the school, but is that wifi fast? No,it isn´t and this problem has carried lots and lots of complaints about it.`The wifi of the school is one of the worst I´ve seen, it goes slowly and it turn off very often´ said a student from 1st of secondary school. As we know, wifi is our tool (one of the most important), and if we cannot use it at a 100% it has no sense. Some students have suggested to revise all the connections to the wifi.

EEKS FROM STUDENTS GLOBAL EXAMS AND THEIR ORDER As students are getting closer to the globals exams, the problem or the order of globals is again on the classrooms .As we know, there are 4 types of A levels, and each of them want an order. Last week they have been discussing who the order will be,one of the problem has been philosophy and mathematics. Last globals one of the problem was that philosophy was the last one as lost of students had issues with this subject. HERE IS HOW THEY EVENTUALLY TURNED OUT TO BE CHOSEN:

Opinion article: Do Humanities really worth so little? By: Maider Nieves

Life goes by quickly without waiting for us. We’ve almost finished 2017 and we’ll bid farewell to a year full of technological innovations amongst which can be highlighted robots who interact with us, new mobile phones, glasses that give sight to blinds… etcetera. Apparently our lives are marked by these steps forward regarding science. It seems that we live and die for technology right now and, since from the very first when we were kids we’ve been surrounded by all this novelties, this is something that we cannot deny or even ignore. Even so, when it turns that a student has to choose his future and the job that will bring his daily bread, each day more and more teenagers pay no heed to the humanities and choose scientifical path instead. Nobody cares about thinking, nobody cares about culture and nobody cares about the speech anymore. Certainly this is a pity, because if we don’t work hard to keep this studies, we’ll lose capacities of understanding human way of thinking or so essencial issues as feelings and behaviour, we’ll forget how to talk to people and we’ll give up human interaction. We won’t have a clue where do we come from if we leave history out of our lives and we’ll commit the same mistakes inevitably. I’d like to quote Victor Hugo, one of the greatest French writers poets and playwrights, right now: “what drives and moves the world are ideas, not machines” (He’s making a clear reference to reason and culture). So why don’t we start taking it into account? However it is still a reality in every language-lover teenager, young artist, amateur philosopher and students passionate about classical culture to deal with such comments like “Oh you really chose Humanities? That’s not witty at all!” or “Artistic grade you say, huh? But what are you doing with your life?” by all the brainiacs -because, of course, only science-students seem to be intelligent for them, we are just a bunch of useless people who are not good at mathematics, as they love to say-. I personally believe that being a man or woman or letters doesn’t mean that you will have no good comebacks. And, unlike what it is in general terms thought, there are undoubtedly brilliant students in these grades, Art and Humanities, just like in Technology, Biology or Social Science. This is why I believe that nobody should have the right on criticize a teen’s choice on what studies he or she will be taking, and neither any teacher must manipulate his or her pupils spreading the lie (because it is definitely a lie) that if you don’t take Science, you will be worthless in society.

Unfortunately (and also unjustly for students who picked Letters), these situations I mentioned before have happened in our school, Berriotxoa, and some of us no matter which school year we’re in, have still to listen the childish tautings who accusatively point us, as for example “they chose Literature because they have no head for Maths” “Okay, you speak Greek but tell me where is that useless thing going to take you”, or the silly gossips when that lonely students passes by the corridors: “He wants to be singer and actor in the theatre. He needs to open his eyes and watch out real life”. We don’t deserve such offenses. I would even say that one of the biggest problems we have in our society is that we have too many science-people who are currently leading the world. Scientists, businessmen, computer-experts… who look down on us. So yes, too many Science and Technology, but no one who really thinks about the society problems and how to solve them as humanists do. Nobody listens to a historian or a philosopher. I believe men of letters could make a positive change to our world. Humanities are a slowly, but each day faster, losing treasure. It is all about understanding where do we come from, where are we going to, how did we learn to communicate and speak, what’s our fate, thinking and reflecting, expressing our feelings in different and beautiful manners such as painting, writing or simply doing oratory. There is a wonderful precious and pretty meaning behind the words LETTERS, HUMANITIES or ARTS. Everyone should be up-to-date about this fact, encouraging children to take wherever subject they love even if it is not a “science-subject” and, most importantly, stop judging other people with different likings with no reasons.
