Patti Ellish President/CEO, St. Tammany Parish Hospital

Women IN Business 2013 spotlights women who have achieved success in the exciting world of northshore business. As CEO of St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Patti Ellish is a singular example of such an achievement. She sits at the helm of the parish’s second-largest employer. (The parish school system is the largest.) Now in her 13th year as CEO, Ellish is spearheading the hospital’s most recent expansion effort, with construction slated to begin later this year. The story of Ellish’s service to the hospital and the community is a fitting introduction to Women IN Business 2013.

St. Tammany Parish Hospital is one of the primary providers of health care on the northshore, and CEO Patti Ellish is at the heart of St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She has been at the helm of this growing, thriving, changing organization for 13 years. That’s more than twice the national average for a hospital CEO, a position that the late management guru Peter Drucker referred to as one of the most difficult jobs in America. The only thing more impressive than the length of her tenure is the impact it has had on our community. Under Ellish’s leadership, the hospital has tripled in size, set a precedent for disaster preparedness, led the way in technologically advanced health care and developed an integrated cancer center by partnering with a renowned leader in cancer care. But Ellish is not pausing to celebrate her accomplishments. She is preparing for the next phase of growth—a $21 million expansion project that will add another 21-bed, all-private nursing unit and a new, separate emergency department created specifically for the hospital’s youngest patients. In an area demographically dominated by young families, a dedicated pediatric emergency department might seem like a no-brainer. And yet, St.

The description of areas filled with art, aquariums and soft music is a far cry from the stark and sterile impersonal hospital corridors that occupy many of our fears and some of our memories. “It’s not just what you’re doing but how you’re doing it that I think is going to impact people’s lives,” Ellish says of the ongoing shift in clinical care to an approach that treats the whole person rather than just the disease. She works hard to lead a team of clinicians who connect with their patients. “I hope that what they’re thinking about when they deliver care is what if it were their family member—their wife or their child or their mother. What is it that they would want to do for that individual? It changes your whole perspective.” Ellish’s health care career began with that perspective. As a registered nurse, she cared for the sick for more than 20 years before she began graduate school and her executive track. “I’m a nurse. And I can’t separate that from everything that I do. … I’m no longer at the bedside, but I can’t help remembering what it’s like. For me, that’s from where I came. So I want to give back and do better.” The hospital’s newest additions will be designed to do better for our

From Nurse’s Station to Corner Office Tammany Parish Hospital will have the first of its kind in the parish. “We are responding to what we feel is a growing community need,” Ellish says, though she is quick to clarify that emergency care for children is currently available at St. Tammany and in the northshore’s other acute care medical facilities. “It’s there and it’s excellent. But we are absolutely elevating that experience.” Empathy is a main ingredient in the design of the new department. “We want to get a picture of what it’s like to be a child and have to use our emergency room. And we want to focus the facility as well as the specialists and the folks caring for your children. We want to bring that expertise to the community. It looks and feels different, and it should.” A difference will also be felt in the design of the new nursing unit. The principles of healing arts have been increasingly incorporated into St. Tammany’s clinical environment over the past decade, and new construction always offers a blank slate with which to create a place of healing that takes in all of the senses and accommodates the presence of family members. “That means not just the bricks and mortar, but the lighting and the flooring and the actual areas where we deliver care centered around the patient,” Ellish says.

community’s children, and for other patient populations whose unique needs have often been overlooked, such as geriatric or mental health patients. Ellish and her team have looked to facilities across the country to find out how they can improve their services for these groups. For the elderly or others with limited mobility or balance, common areas will be designed with wider doorways and more handrails. A special area will be created for patients with psychiatric needs to keep them safe while they await transfer to a different facility. (St. Tammany does not have psychiatric beds.) Though this next phase of growth does not come without its challenges—like adding onto the existing structure without the slightest interruption in the hospital’s current services—Ellish is a practiced leader who knows how to combine talents and plan ahead. When recognized for this, she is quick to spotlight the hard work of others. “I really have to give credit to my team,” Ellish says. “I know the financing and the bond issuance and making sure that this fits into our strategic plan probably sit in my corner. But the real design, the real work that went on day-to-day, [was done by] our chief nurse, Kerry Milton; our lead architects, Fauntleroy Latham Weldon & Barre; our COO, Sharon Toups; and our chief medical Women In Business 2013 5

officer, Dr. Robert Capitelli, who were tremendously involved in this project. We made sure we interjected the clinical folks with the technical people and the architects, because it’s those clinicians who are going to take care of patients.” The managerial savvy required to bring together such diverse talents and get them all speaking the same language also comes from Ellish’s corner, though she does not mention it. Ellish’s knack for forging collaborative partnerships has created many recent wins. The creation of Mary Bird Perkins at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, for example, has added a new dimension to cancer care on the northshore. The hospital and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center have nurtured an ongoing partnership since 1998. Today, they are no longer just partners; they are integrated. “It’s not ‘we’ and ‘them.’ It’s ‘us,’” Ellish explains. This integration goes beyond the beautiful new building that brings the Mary Bird Perkins radiation treatment, research and support under the

teaching facilities aren’t limited to those facilities. What we are able to do is bring care into the community by bringing those protocols and treatment modalities here.” Ellish notes that while the academic and research-driven facilities are able to provide a different level of care for the more unknown or esoteric conditions, St. Tammany is able to join many of the clinical trials that come out of those institutions. “I think our physicians are absolutely participating in the most advanced, evidence-based research protocols that are out there.” St. Tammany remains at the forefront of high-tech health care with advancements such as robotically-assisted surgery and computerized physician order entry systems. “The advancements that are here locally are impressive, even to my regional and academic teaching facility counterparts,” Ellish says. “It’s nice to know that we are able to deliver on that [level of technologically advanced health care] right here close to home.”

same roof as St. Tammany’s chemotherapy, oncology and surgical services. The American College Commission on Cancer, an organization that sets the standard for best-practice in cancer care and research, surveys and reviews the partnership regularly, and designates it an integrated cancer program. “Having us all together provides the synergies and the resources that this community deserves to have under one roof,” Ellish says. “It’s exciting! And definitely a success story for the community.” From a fully integrated cancer center to the latest technology in information sharing, diagnostic procedures, minimally invasive surgery and early detection, St. Tammany continues to bring highly specialized care “close to home.” For a hospital that services what is often referred to as the most affluent parish in the metro area, this means providing services that are on par with such renowned medical facilities as the Cleveland Clinic or the Mayo Clinic. Ellish explains one way they are able to do that. “The evidence and the research that are being produced by

Ellish’s achievements as St. Tammany’s CEO have been instrumental in raising the number and quality of health care offerings in our area. The effect has been reciprocal; the job brought Ellish home. A New Orleans native, she left Louisiana in 1996 to take the position of vice president and COO for the Memorial Health Systems of East Texas. And yet, Ellish found herself returning frequently for visits, weddings or just for a true po-boy or king cake. Her recruitment to St. Tammany in 2000 brought her home for good. “We got the chance to come back. And we were so grateful,” Ellish says wholeheartedly. So what does a woman do to feed her soul if she has the heart to persist with efforts to elevate compassion and clinical outcomes for patients, plus the mind to keep a large hospital financially self-sufficient and growing in a diminishing reimbursement climate? Patti Ellish surrounds herself with family, friends—and the flavors of South Louisiana.

Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution

Kimberly Kringel No one cares more about your child’s success than you do, except maybe Kimberly Kringel, Managing Director of Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution in Mandeville. For more than 35 years, Huntington’s proven methods have provided quality instruction and academic success for hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. “Students who come to Huntington improve their grades, their test scores and most importantly, their confidence. They leave here ready for any academic challenge they may face,” says Kringel. Kringel has always found it rewarding to work with children. “I love their energy and enthusiasm and their possibilities,” she says. “I especially love when I see that ‘I can do it’ look on a child’s face and know that I helped him or her to succeed.” Huntington provides tutoring in reading, study skills, writing, phonics, spelling, math and ACT/SAT/LEAP exam preparation. An individualized academic evaluation identifies exactly where the child’s strengths and weaknesses lie, and a learning 8

plan is specifically designed to meet that student’s goals. Ann Habisreitinger Barré, M.Ed., Director at Huntington in Mandeville, says, “A lot of what we see are children who fall behind because they do not have a solid foundation in the basics. Teachers have to move at a certain pace before the child has a full understanding of foundational concepts and skills. They simply need to catch up.” Logan J., a local second grader says, “Huntington is the greatest place in the world for kids to learn. They taught me how to read and spell better.” Logan’s mom, Katie L., says, “Huntington has helped my son tremendously to improve his reading and writing skills. He now has a newfound confidence and is excited to keep improving. There is no better investment than your child’s future.” Kringel adds, “We teach lots of study skills and time management methods that they can use during testing and in completing homework assignments. These are important life skills as well as academic skills, and it sets the child up for success.” If your child found this school year challenging, summer is a wonderful time for students to prepare for the next school year and for upcoming ACT/SAT exams. Students in Huntington’s ACT/ SAT program are evaluated individually by taking a practice test. After a student takes a practice test, a program is designed in each subject area to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Unlike many prep programs, tutoring is done on a oneon-one basis. “Our programs go far beyond a general ACT/SAT prep course, and our students report a significant rise in these important scores,” says Kringel. Hunter, a local 12th grader, says, “From

the always helpful tutors to their unique test taking strategies, Huntington helped me immensely with my ACT score. I improved from a 26 to a 31 and scored a perfect 36 on my reading section. I am extremely grateful for everything Huntington did for me, and I would recommend their ACT/SAT prep for any student.” Hunter’s mom, Lynn W., agrees. “Huntington is a great place for any student. We found that it produced measurable results in Hunter. Hunter did well on his first ACT with no practice, but he knew that he could improve with preparation. Huntington provided one-onone preparation, including tutoring and testing strategies. Hunter improved his score by five points and now has many scholarship offers.” To give your child an educational edge and to reach their full potential, call Huntington: Your Tutoring Solution today to find out about our summer programs. Candice Knight, MD Louisiana Heart Hospital Physician Group Dr. Candice Knight will soon begin her second year with the Louisiana Heart Hospital Physician Group. Board Certified in Family Medicine and Integrative and Holistic Medicine, Dr. Knight brings a passion for preventative and functional medicine to her practice and residents of the northshore. Functional medicine, she explains, seeks to form a partnership between patient and physician to treat the underlying cause of chronic ailments. “My practice is different from a traditional one. I focus on the root cause of a problem.” says Dr. Knight. “When patients see me, it’s as though they’re coming to see an experienced friend and we talk. No one knows their body better than the patient. And I’ve learned that when a patient tells me something doesn’t feel right, no matter what’s on paper, that something is wrong. Listening to my patients is very important; I hear what my patients say and add medical knowledge. Together, the two of us work as experts to solve the problem. “Focusing on the patient’s lifestyle is a big part of my practice. Eating healthy and regular exercise are important. It’s that simple. But, sometimes when stress levels are high, things don’t always operate the way they’re supposed to. The problem may also be caused by something as simple as the patient having been exposed to something they are allergic to.” She adds, “The most rewarding part of my practice is helping patients get their health and life on track so that they feel good. That’s why I do this. That’s what I live for.” A New Orleans native, Dr. Knight completed her undergraduate degree at Yale University majoring in pre-med and history. Following Yale, Dr. Knight entered Tulane University’s Master of Public Health program majoring in epidemiology and maternal and child health. After completing

her master’s degree, Dr. Knight entered LSU Medical School in New Orleans. In addition to being Board Certified In Family Medicine and Integrative & Holistic Medicine, Dr. Knight is pursuing certification in functional medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Dr. Knight joined the Louisiana Heart Hospital Physician Group in 2012. She and her partners, Brian Galofaro, MD, and David Persaud, MD, also family medicine physicians, are located in Mandeville at 2190 N. Causeway Blvd, Ste. 150 . The group will be moving to a new location in Covington in June 2013 due to the success of the practice. Women In Business 2013 9

Center for Women’s Health For women, by women is the motto of the Center for Women’s Health (CWH), the only all female OB/GYN practice in West St. Tammany. The practice was founded in 2005 by Dr. Katherine Williams. Kelly Brewster, a women’s health nurse practitioner, joined her at that time. Dr. Rachael Cresap came on board in 2010 and Dr. Hadar Waldman rounded out the group in 2012. The physicians, along with Kelly, practice a teamwork approach with a collaborative method for treating patients. Dr. Williams says, “We really do see every aspect of a woman, not just the physical component but also the emotional issues that we as women deal with. We feel like we do have that advantage as women to care for women.” Kelly Brewster follows, “the cornerstone of our approach is patient education. How can you beat a disease if you don’t understand it?” The mission of CWH is to provide innovative, quality health care for female patients in a warm and comfortable environment. The focus on patient care is so essential that it’s even evident in the design of the building. Patient rooms are painted in soothing colors and each one is decorated with a different theme depicting women at various stages in their lives. Patient rooms also offer custom cabinetry, crown molding 10

and granite countertops. Dr. Cresap says, “We want our patients to feel comfortable and free to ask questions, to learn about their health and how to take care of themselves.” “We care for women in all stages of life from adolescence to senior,” adds Dr. Waldman. “We also see both low and high risk pregnancies as well as comprehensive gynecologic care.” Conditions treated include pelvic pain, female sexual dysfunction, incontinence, menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms and polycystic ovarian syndrome. All physicians are board certified and perform both robotic and laparoscopic surgery.

Wax’d

One year ago, Michelle White and her husband, Brett, opened Wax’d, their version of what a full-body waxing salon should be. Their goal was to create a gender-neutral space offering services for both men and women. Wax’d was deliberately designed to be different and to put the guests’ comfort first—including the time allotted to perform the services. Michelle studied at John Jay on the southshore and worked for a top dermatologist in uptown New Orleans, where she gained valuable clinical experience. She says, “Wax’d is the ‘anti-day-spa’ day spa. We want our guests to feel as comfortable as possible, not like they’re in an assembly line.” It’s so relaxing at Wax’d that Michelle says several guests have fallen asleep while having their eyebrows done! Wax’d also offers deep-cleansing facials, diamond-tip microdermabrasion, chemical peels, airbrush spray tanning and massage therapy. The salon carries a selection of all-natural organic products and was recently named as the featured retailer for The Grapeseed Company. Michelle says, “We wanted to build a place where people can have fun, relax and be themselves. You’ll usually find us running around in jeans and tennis shoes joking with our guests.”

Take a toothpick, a piece of bread and sample until your heart’s content.” A culinary gift shop specializing in a wide selection of on-tap oils and vinegars, the store sells products ranging from herbs and spices, sauces and dressings, to pastas and sweets. The easy and fun part is tasting! Choosing a favorite flavor is a bit more challenging. Katie Irving, Pemmie’s daughter and store manager, says, “We encourage our guests to sample. Anything that is edible is available for tasting. We want our customers to be pleased with their purchases.” Pemmie encourages guests to experiment with the wide variety of flavored oil and vinegars on tap. She says, “I did not like chemistry in school, but I am having a ball in my oil and vinegar mixing lab. It’s fun to try different combinations.” After you make a selection that fits your pallet, the bottle is filled. You take it home, use it and then bring it back for a refill. (Buy the bottle only once.) Locally owned and operated, the store also sells pre-packaged products from countries all over the world. Dr. Ellen Schneider Dr. Ellen Schneider is the first eye surgeon in St. Tammany Parish to perform laser cataract surgery. While traditional cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful medical procedures today, laser cataract surgery is a technological breakthrough that has significantly improved the accuracy and precision of this surgery. With traditional cataract surgery, incisions are created manually with a blade. With laser cataract surgery, the incisions are bladeless, as they are created with the laser. Each patient’s unique measurements are customized. Using computer-guided 3D imaging, incisions are created with micron-level precision; astigmatism is reduced, which provides better visual outcomes. When laser cataract surgery is paired with premium intraocular lenses such as the ReStor multifocal lens, there is no need for glasses after the surgery; glasses are no longer required for reading, driving, or using computers and smart phones. In addition to laser cataract surgery, Dr. Schneider, a board-certified ophthalmologist, provides state-of-the-art comprehensive eye care for the entire family. Dr. Schneider has offices at 550 Brownswitch Rd in Slidell, 985-781-7531, and at 4720 S. I-10 Service Rd, Ste. 406, in Metairie, 504-304-5475.

Susannah Leaming’s love of color and uniqueness were her inspiration in creating her line of wire-wrapped jewelry and accessories. A New Orleans native, Susannah began making rings while living in California. “Everyone wanted them,” says Susannah. “In stores, they sold out immediately. I made hundreds of rings.” Stores began asking for other pieces of her distinctive designs, which use 14karat gold-plated, non-tarnishing metal wire. She created Classic Earrings, which are still a must after five years. “I search all over for the best wire and stones. Combining them makes a statement through the use of texture, color and design,” says Susannah. Colors and styles change with each season. This spring’s line includes earrings, necklaces, belts, fabulous cuffs, hair accessories and new home accents featuring gorgeous sea glass, jadeite greens, coral, baroque pearls, turquoise and more. “You and your friends can wire-wrap your own pieces at our Ladies Night Out, bridal or children’s parties—either in your home or in our Mandeville studio,” says Susannah. Recently, Susannah’s earrings were featured on The Today Show. As her reputation and business grow, Susannah Elle will expand to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Susannah’s jewelry is available at The Villa and Simply Southern. Home accents can be found at All Wrapped Up on the northshore and on the southshore at Little Miss Muffin. Ochsner is pleased to have Polly Davenport, BSN, MBA, RN, as Chief Executive Officer of its North Shore facilities, including Ochsner Medical Center – North Shore in Slidell and 13 health centers throughout the region. Under Polly’s leadership, Ochsner North Shore became the first in the Ochsner system to successfully transition to a new, uniform electronic medical record, an accomplishment that earned the North Shore a Stage 6 designation from HIMSS Analytics. This system connects the needs of the patients to the providers among all the Ochsner locations. Polly also oversaw the implementation of the Ochsner Critical Care Telemedicine at Ochsner Medical Center – North Shore, a stateof-the-art technology that provides additional monitoring of the most critical patients under their care. Using advanced technology to enhance the quality and safety of patient care is paramount to the Ochsner mission on the North Shore.

Ochsner Medical Center – North Shore

Polly Davenport, BSN, MBA, RN

Polly has a strong background in providing patients with top quality healthcare—something evidenced by the care provided locally at Ochsner. Prior to joining Ochsner in 2011, Polly was the CEO of Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, Texas. She earned a master’s degree at Our Lady of the Lake University and a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

When not leading a region of more than 1,000 employees, Polly is continuing her education and expects to achieve her doctorate in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the fall of 2014. Polly enjoys mentoring young professionals interested in joining the healthcare field and is frequently seen rounding in her facilities to understand the needs of the front line staff. Jenny Mutter Hestia Luxury in Linens

Nine years ago, when Jenny Mutter was just 25, she wrote a business plan, took out a loan and opened her store, Hestia Luxury in Linens in Covington. Formerly in the furniture/bedding industry, Jenny was eager to run a business where she could use her creativity. With a unique vision in mind, she chose to name the store after the Greek goddess of home and hearth, Hestia. “I love designing. I love colors. I love visualizing a room and seeing it turn out in the end,” Jenny says. Her store carries linens of all kinds, ranging from sheets and duvets to window treatments and pajamas. She also offers custom designs and free in-home consultations. “When people hear luxury, they think expensive. It doesn’t have to be that way. I can design a bedroom within your budget. Our prices are comparable to Target and Bed Bath and Beyond, and the bed will be unique to you. Essentially, no two people will have the same bed.”

Set up like a design studio, Hestia Luxury in Linens is located 61 Park Place, Suite D in Covington, 893-0490. Open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and by appointment. 16

At Grieshaber Dermatology, great skin is a family affair. Dr. Emily Grieshaber is the third generation of Board Certified Dermatologists in her family’s practice. In 2012, she joined her father, Dr. Bob Grieshaber, in the Covington office, which has served the area for more than 30 years. “It’s such a privilege to work with my dad and to have the opportunity to bring the newest technology and advances in dermatology to the northshore,” says Dr. Emily. Since Dr. Emily’s grandfather, Dr. Fred Grieshaber, began practicing in New Orleans

Dr. Emily Grieshaber Grieshaber Dermatology, Covington

in 1949, Grieshaber Dermatology has been known for its excellence in the treatment and prevention of general dermatological problems and skin cancer. In addition to practicing medical dermatology, Dr. Emily has expanded the practice to include cosmetic dermatology. She offers Botox, chemical peels and Juvéderm, as well as pulsed dye laser to treat facial redness and spider veins, non-ablative fractional resurfacing, laser hair removal, and photo facials that reverse years of sun damage and improve the skin’s texture. “It is so important to choose a Board Certified Dermatologist,” advises Dr. Emily. “We provide medical and surgical treatments that require specialized training and experience, and these procedures can have very bad outcomes when not performed properly.” Dr. Emily cautions patients about placing their skin in the hands of a practitioner not specifically trained and board certified in dermatology. Dr. Emily welcomes both medical and cosmetic dermatology patients to the new office of Grieshaber Dermatology, conveniently located just around the corner from the old location on Tyler Street.

Kelly Simon mélange by KP After 20 years in corporate Americana, Kelly Simon took a big step. She retired to devote all of her time and energy to her shop, mélange by KP. Now in a new location—still in Turtle Creek—with double the square footage, Kelly has increased her collection of shabby-chic furniture, accessories and gifts. Even more exciting is the enlarged studio for the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® classes she has made popular. “We have expanded the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® classes to include canvas art and workshops like ‘Re-Vamp Your Lamp.’ Students bring in an old lamp that has seen its better days and paint it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®. This paint is incredible—it can paint over almost anything, from ceramic vases and candlesticks to kitchen cabinets and floors,” says Kelly. Repainting saves money, but also creates a new look and gives the student a sense of accomplishment. The classes teach students how to apply the paint and wax and glaze the pieces for the desired finish. One client painted her Dupioni silk draperies and another painted a pink floral sofa! “I love to paint and re-purpose old furniture,” says Kelly. “That led me to be the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® stocking dealer in Mandeville. The paint brings an old piece up-to-date, giving it a distressed, shabbychic finish. Our homes are filled with pieces that we don’t like the look of anymore, but we hate to get rid of them. These pieces are perfect for chalk painting.” Kelly has always offered all 30 fabulous Chalk Paint colors in

quarts and sample pots, along with waxes and accessories. She now has color mixing on site, painted samples to browse and borrow and more. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® books are available for beginner and advanced techniques. Fabrics have been added to the line in stripes, toile and patterns that complement the paint colors. In the shop, Kelly has chalk painted the floors and decorated the shop with great finds. Burlap accessories like shower curtains and tote bags by REpurposing NOLA carry that theme along. The ever-changing inventory of the shop includes antiques and newly constructed cypress furniture. Planters, preserved boxwood plants and handcrafted natural loofah soaps are just a few of the many gift items available. John Hodge’s decorative pottery pieces, which are handcrafted using holy water in the clay, are wonderful gifts for a special someone. Jewelry by twenty-nine eleven, handcrafted in Pensacola, is a best seller. Custom pieces, sofa tables, dining tables, trumeau mirrors and headboards can be special ordered and crafted to your specifications. Kelly says, “We are very grateful for the high percentage of our business that comes from repeat customers and referrals. I believe that follows from the firm commitment of our entire team to our highest priority, meeting our customers’ needs.” mélange by KP is located at 5200 Hwy. 22, Suite 2, Mandeville, 807-7652. melangekp.com. Even as a girl, Sheri Duplantis knew that she wanted to own her own business. Almost six years ago, while working in real estate, Sheri had the opportunity to purchase a small boutique in Houma called JuJu’s Boutique. When she bought the store, it only carried handbags and accessories. Sheri expanded the merchandise to include stylish clothing and shoes and molded the boutique to her own vision of retail fashion. The success of the first JuJu’s JuJu’s Boutique prompted Sheri to launch other locations. A true entrepreneur, she opened JuJu’s Boutique in Lafayette and then, in November 2012, JuJu’s of Mandeville. A fourth store opened in Baton Rouge this spring. “Many women think that a change of season means they have to buy a whole new wardrobe, but just adding a few fresh pieces can update your look. Lace, sheer and chevron prints are all hot trends and can update a wardrobe instantly,” says Sheri. JuJu’s carries on-trend clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags and accessories from lines such as Jessica Simpson, Ya, Ark & Co. and Volatile to dress you from top to bottom or simply add a WOW factor to an outfit you own. With a wide variety of merchandise, customers of any age can find something fabulous. “JuJu’s is a fun shopping trip for a mother and daughter or a group of girlfriends,” says Sheri. The knowledgeable and friendly staff at JuJu’s can guide even the most reluctant shopper to the perfect look for her age and style. Sheri frequently hits the road to check on JuJu’s many locations and to lend shoppers her personal touch.

“Restaurants are in my blood! I love to cook and create and K.Gee’s gives me the opportunity to do that every day. husband, Grant (called “Gee” by everyone). They saw the need for a topshelf oyster bar in the Mandeville area. Kathy’s family had owned and operated a well-known restaurant, Bozo’s, in Metairie for years during its heyday. Some of her earliest memories are of watching the restaurant goings-on from her perch on a barstool. She worked in the restaurant all throughout high school and college and into her adult life. K.Gee’s celebrates its third anniversary this June. While many customers come to K.Gee’s for the oysters, they return again and again for favorites such as stuffed eggplant, fried seafood, chicken dishes and hamburgers. Kathy cooks everything on the menu fresh to order and sources most of her ingredients from local suppliers. She uses only Louisiana seafood. There are no frozen or boxed ingredients here; many of the recipes have been passed down through Kathy’s family for generations. In addition to serving lunch and dinner every day except Sunday, Kathy and Gee host local music on Friday nights. Artists include Rick Sampson, Christian Serpas and other local talent. Every Tuesday, oysters are half-price all day, and Kathy creates tempting new specials every day. Kathy says, “At K.Gee’s, our motto is, ‘Come as customers, leave as friends.’” Let K.Gee’s cater your next special event. Beverly McQuaid has been blessed. The founder of the northshore’s premier early childhood education center, Planet Kids, had the opportunity that few of us get. She made her dream of a first-class childhood education program in Madisonville a reality—and built it from the ground up. From the beginning, Beverly designed Planet Kids to be different from other “daycare” centers in the area. It is more than 7,000 square feet, filled with natural light and soaring ceilings. Classrooms are meticulously clean and decorated with vibrant children’s art. It has lots of safe and fun outdoor space and nature abounds on its 2-acre campus. The facility also has a yoga studio, computer lab, splash pad and amphitheater. But Planet Kids is about more than its bells and whistles. At its heart, it’s about Beverly’s vision of what early childhood education could be at its best. “I wanted to create a place where kids could be safe, have fun and could learn and be loved,” she says. “At Planet Kids, we work with them on every level. Our desire is for every child to not only have fun and exciting experiences at school, but also be academically engaged at their own developmental level. I want to give them a foundation that will take them anywhere they want to go.” Planet Kids seeks to educate the whole child instead of focusing on only academic performance. “At this stage, a child’s emotional, social and physical development are every bit as important as their academic performance,” says Beverly. “We engage them on all fronts and show them that creative problem solving and learning can be fun.” After teaching kids for the past 16 years, one of Beverly’s greatest joys is watching “her” kids move on from Planet Kids and succeed in schools around the parish. Planet Kids has also experienced some success of its

own. It has been voted the “Best on Northshore” for eight years running— but that acknowledgement is not how Beverly McQuaid measures her success. “The successes of the children who come out of Planet Kids are truly the riches of my heart. They are my blessings,” she says. Planet Kids Academy, located at 317 Hwy. 21 in Madisonville, operates from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and offers full-day programs on a three-, four-or five-day-a-week basis for ages 12 months to 5 years. Laurie Panzeca

Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation

“I feel blessed to be able to wake up each morning and go to work for a foundation I am passionate about. I have an incredibly gratifying career,” says Laurie Panzeca, executive director of the Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation. Laurie has volunteered in her community since she was a child. During college, when the time came to choose a career path, her decision was clear—she wanted to work in the nonprofit sector. “I told my family I was choosing to enter the nonprofit sector and dedicate my career to it,” Laurie says. “I wanted to work in the public side of fundraising for an organization. I was, and still am, so passionate about changing lives. When you have that passion deep inside, it shines through in the work that you do.” As executive director, Laurie is responsible for running the Slidell Memorial Hospital Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the quality of life in the Slidell community. With the help of dedicated volunteers, the foundation aims to educate and better the community by providing technology and equipment that improves patients’ experience with healthcare. Laurie manages the day-to-day operations, works with donors, handles marketing, spreads awareness of the foundation and manages fundraising events. “My job is to do something every day that will ensure the success of the foundation and impact our community for the greater good,” Laurie says. Created to support the Slidell Memorial Hospital, the foundation receives funds from donors, fundraisers and grants. Laurie says the foundation has a firm financial footing and a plan for growth so that it can continue to partner with SMH to provide the services that patients deserve. Laurie maintains a close working relationship with the hospital staff. She says, “Slidell Memorial Hospital is a great place to work, and I am honored to be its champion in the community. I have a huge amount of respect for the SMH employees, the hospital’s Board of Commissioners and the foundation’s Board of Trustees. They are all dedicated advocates for our community.”

Married with two daughters, Laurie strives for a work and family balance. “My family is my priority when I am not at work,” Laurie says. “I feel strongly about passing my volunteerism to my children. We volunteer as a family, and I encourage my daughters to give back to the community regularly. It is part of our way of life. I truly believe that by working together with the community we will make a difference in the world.”

Hair has always been a woman’s most important accessory. Unlike shoes or a handbag, hair is the one accessory we can’t change on a whim, and we all know how we are affected by a bad hair day. Heather Mahoney of H2O Salon is an expert at discovering and drawing out natural beauty in everyone. Most importantly, Heather and her team show their guests how to recreate their salon styles at home. The first H2O Salon opened in Old Metairie in 1988 and in 2006, a second location in Mandeville was opened. Heather’s passion is people and beauty is her business. H2O is so trusted because not only is the team extremely talented but they train extensively and stay abreast of current hair trends. Northshore fashionistas have been thanking Stephanie Pagliarulo ever since she opened the doors of Emma’s Shoes last August! Stephanie has a passion for fashion—and it shows in her exclusive upscale shoe and accessory boutique. Stephanie has always loved shopping and clothes. When she moved to the area after spending many years on the West Coast, she noticed a lack of boutiques offering cutting-edge choices in accessories. Her friends encouraged her to use her keen eye for fashion to open her own store. Emma’s Shoes was born, named for her daughter. Stephanie stays up-to-date on trends in shoes and accessories in New York and Los Angeles and brings them to Mandeville. Emma’s is the northshore exclusive retailer for many exciting lines of shoes, handbags, sunglasses, jewelry and hair accessories from designers, including Joie, L.K. Bennett (designer for Duchess Kate), Delman, Vince, AGL, See by Chloe, Luchesse, Alexis Bittar, Sigerson Morrison, Rachel Roy, Lauren Merkin and Tom Ford. Medical Psychologist

In her busy practice, medical psychologist Dr. Victoria Witt provides diagnosis and treats psychiatric problems with medication in addition to providing psychotherapy (similar to psychiatry). For most psychiatric conditions, research supports this approach as more beneficial than either alone. She says, “What I value about being an MP is that medications often improve the patients’ symptoms quickly and improve their psychotherapy experience.” Having a graduate degree in pharmacology/psychopharmacology, Dr. Witt is licensed by the Louisiana Medical Board as a “Medical Psychologist—Advanced Practice,” indicating high proficiency in medically treating psychiatric conditions. Dr. Witt practiced in Covington from 1992 until Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, she joined a group in Slidell that provides individual and family psychotherapy. Dr. Witt says, “Our clinic offers psychotherapy and medication treatment. We consult with patients’ other doctors to provide the best continuity of care.” An experienced clinician, Dr. Witt treats patients with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADD/ADHD and insomnia, and treats persons with chronic health conditions with secondary depression or anxiety. Sara Adams The Lakehouse, Mandeville

Marta Bragg loves every aspect of owning her upscale women’s boutique, The Villa. “I enjoy talking to the people who come into the store,” she says. “It is really interesting. People often think a certain dress won’t look good on them. From experience, I know it will, and I tell them ‘just trust me.’ When it looks wonderful and they love it, they are so pleasantly surprised.” While the biggest seller is dresses, The Villa carries other apparel, gifts and jewelry. Marta describes her personal style as “classic with an edge,” which reflects in the stock in her store. Known for optimal customer service, The Villa offers free alterations and gift wrapping. Marta says, “Good customer service is hard to come by. I make sure when someone comes into my store, they are treated very special.” Marta and her husband of 23 years, Billy, whom she refers to as “the light of my life,” have two grown daughters, Nichole and Elizabeth. Marta and Nichole purchased the store in 2000. They ran the store as a motherdaughter team until Nichole chose to stay home to raise her children. Marta is the proud grandmother to three little girls. “I love them all more than life itself. It is more fun being a grandmother than you can imagine,” she says.

Sara Adams’ passion is perfect parties. She works her magic at the historic and hip Lakehouse in Mandeville. A breathtaking view of Lake Pontchartrain’s sunset is the backdrop for the wonderful events and memories of a lifetime that she helps clients create. A New Orleans native, Sara came to Mandeville by way of New York City, where she produced large-scale events for non-profits. “I missed my family and was tired of being cold,” she says of her return to Louisiana. If you can dream it, Sara can make it happen. Her ability to really listen to what a bride or party host wants and then execute it is what makes her a standout in her field. She prides herself on careful attention to detail and stays up-to-date on the latest in wedding and party trends. She says, “I want every party to have an individual feel that reflects the personality of the giver. I want it to be perfect in their eyes.” “The Lakehouse is a versatile venue. It can feel warm and intimate for a small gathering like a baby shower or accommodate up to 400 guests for a big event or wedding—with style!” says Sara, adding that the restaurant serves delicious craft cocktails and Southern food with a modern twist—like beignet bites with café au lait shooters. With a unique ambiance that perfectly blends the modern and traditional atmosphere, The Lakehouse is the perfect setting for Sara to weave her magic for any special event.

What if divorce could be done differently? After years sharpening their skills as traditional divorce attorneys, Kim Vanderbrook and Marie Hillman grew frustrated at seeing family relationships and finances destroyed by the divorce process. They set out to create a different kind of law firm where a more peaceful divorce could happen. “We wanted to change what can be a life-destroying ordeal into a transformational process and help couples and their children avoid the collateral damage too often caused by the traditional model of divorce,” the attorneys say about their firm, Simply Divorce.

Divorce Done Differenly

In addition to uncontested divorces, Simply Divorce offers mediation services. Mediation helps couples resolve divorce issues that would ordinarily be raised in court. Kim Vanderbrook has been a family law mediator since 1997. “Even if a divorce is painful, divorcing couples share many mutual interests, especially if they have kids. Mediation gives them, not the court, the control to find solutions that they both can live with and that protect those interests,” says Kim. A traditional divorce can cost between $15,000 and $30,000 and can take an average of 18 months or more. Choosing a mediator or uncontested divorce to resolve issues instead of resorting to court hearings can save divorcing parties thousands of dollars and be completed in a shorter time period. But the best part about mediation is the great satisfaction couples feel when they decide their future for themselves. Simply Divorce is located at 522 N. New Hampshire St. in Covington, 985-327-3024. simplydivorce.me. 30

Since opening her fine art school studio in Covington more than a year ago, Gretchen Armbruster has seen her classes become so popular that she had to add classes and expand her curriculum. She says, “I could never have imagined loving a job so much. Teaching such talented and wonderful people is truly a great thing to wake up and do every day!” Well-known as a portrait and landscape artist, Gretchen works in oils, watercolor and pencil. She paints for galleries across the country, such as Southern Breeze in Jackson, Miss.; Taylor Clark Gallery in Baton Rouge; and the Pineapple Gallery and Arabella in Mandeville. She is featured in the May issue of the national American Art Collector magazine. Gretchen’s notable work includes painting the 2004-2006 Crescent City Classic posters, 12 years of elaborate Bacchus designs and extensive murals in the historic French Quarter Old Absinthe House. Her paintings can also be found in St. Tammany Parish Hospital, West Jefferson Hospital, Ochsner Hospital and many restaurants and homes in the area. Gretchen’s work was seen on the big screen in the movie He said, She Said. Gretchen studied with area artists such as David Robert Rosbach, Alan Flattman, David Jinks and at LSU and John McCrady Art College.

In her eighth year as Executive Director of the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation, Charley Strickland assists the organization in developing philanthropic support for the hospital’s mission—providing world-class health care close to home for generations to come. With Charley’s help, the Foundation raised nearly $1.2 million in 2012 alone. Special fundraising events like Monster Mash, the Heart and Night of Fashion, Angels of Light and the “Get Lucky!” Golf Tournament raised about half of the funds and provided fun and bonding for the entire St. Tammany community. Outright donations, grants from corporations and foundations and bequests completed the year’s giving. Important hospital programs including the Parenting Center, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Hospital, Infection Prevention, Hospice, the Employee Benevolent Fund, Respiratory Services and the Nurse/Family Partnership benefited from 2012’s generous gifts. The community has donated more than $9 million to the Foundation since its inception. Founded in 2003, the St. Tammany Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization led by a volunteer board of community leaders who are committed to keeping St. Tammany Parish Hospital at the forefront of medical technology. Charley shares, “Not many people realize that St. Tammany is a selfsupporting, not-for-profit community hospital that receives no tax funding.” A member of the Association for Health care Philanthropy, Charley has most recently served as its governmental affairs representative for Louisiana. As a planned giving specialist, she has seen the Foundation’s Legacy of Caring Society grow under her watch. “Planned gifts are those made now that come to fruition in the future. They are bequests in wills, insurance policies and charitable gift annuities, just to name a few,” says Charley. “I am blessed to have such a rewarding job. Every day, I interact with our generous donors and volunteers who value the importance of having an award-winning, state-of-the-art community hospital. Keeping St. Tammany Parish Hospital healthy keeps our community healthy.”
