Chair’s welcome

Chair’s welcome Thank you for joining us today to celebrate the achievements of our postgraduate students, to honour staff and students who have made exceptional contributions to the College and to recognise colleagues from outside Imperial through honorary awards for the outstanding accomplishments they have achieved within their disciplines.

In October 2019, three months before I took up the role of Chair of College Council, I was invited as a guest to attend the Commemoration Day Ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall. I sat in one of the boxes at the back of the Hall and was immediately struck by the enormous sense of excitement and ceremony and by the feeling of warmth and community. It reminded me of my own graduation, not from Imperial, but from another fine university – Edinburgh – many years ago. Two and a half years later, as we emerge from the many constraints the pandemic has placed on us, I am overjoyed that we can again celebrate, rejoice and share in our graduates’ remarkable achievements in the Royal Albert Hall. Imperial’s Royal Charter of 1907 gave the university a distinct mandate focused on the application of education, research and scholarship. For generations, those with a degree from Imperial have made their mark in science, technology, engineering, medicine, business and education to the benefit of society. Imperial graduates are an illustrious group of outstanding innovators and thinkers.

Mr John Allan

About the day

About the day Graduations are a highlight of the College year, a time when we welcome back our graduating students, together with families and friends, to celebrate outstanding academic achievement.

Graduations for Imperial College London have taken place in the Royal Albert Hall for over 60 years. The Hall, which opened in 1871, was part of Prince Albert’s grand vision for a cultural, scientific and artistic quarter in South Kensington. Given that Imperial also has its origins in this vision, it is fitting that the College should celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates here. The order for the day is: 10.00: Graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering 13.30: Graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Medicine 17.30: Graduation ceremony for Imperial College Business School; Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication; and the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship

Photography Please note that unauthorised video recording and photography are not permitted in the Royal Albert Hall. Professional photographers will be available during the day to take portrait photographs of graduands. The ceremony will be live-streamed on the Graduation website, so friends and family will be able to watch you graduate. Visit www.imperial.ac.uk/graduation to view the live stream.

The Imperial Mace The Imperial College London Mace was presented to the College by the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2009 in recognition of Imperial’s status as a university in its own right. The generous gift reflects the livery company’s longstanding relationship with Imperial and its predecessor institutions. The intricate design of the Mace incorporates elements of the College’s coat of arms. The helix-shaped stem represents human DNA or a chain of atoms in a spiral, providing a visual reference to the College’s expertise in science and medicine. The Mace is a focal point of the College’s graduation ceremonies: it traditionally heralds the arrival of the Provost, President and Chair of Council during the Procession.

The exterior of the Royal Albert Hall, shown here in the late nineteenth century, is built from over 6 million red bricks and 80,000 blocks of terracotta.

The Imperial Mace traditionally leads the procession of the Provost, President and Chair of Council.

Music The orchestra is conducted by Mr Oliver Gooch, Director of Music and the Blyth Centre at Imperial. The organist is Mr Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral.

Academic dress Academic dress has its origins in medieval Europe, when it identified the rank and profession of the wearer. Today, academic dress denotes the graduate’s institution and the level of degree awarded. The unifying theme of academic dress at Imperial is the colour purple. This is an homage to the work of Royal College of Chemistry alumnus Sir William Henry Perkin, who invented mauveine, the world’s first synthetic purple dye, in 1856.

MPhil graduands wear black gowns and black hoods with purple lining. PhD, DEng, MD and DSc graduands wear purple hoods and purple gowns; the sleeves of PhD, DEng and MD graduands are purple, while those of DSc graduands are white.

Associateships Alongside their degree qualification, graduands may also receive the award of Associate of the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines, the City and Guilds of London Institute, or the Imperial College School of Medicine. Associateships reflect the origins and development of the College and have been recorded since its formation in 1907.

Master’s graduands wear black gowns and black hoods with white and purple lining. The coloured stripe on the collar of the hood denotes Faculty affiliation.

Imperial’s past and future

Imperial’s past and future For over 100 years, Imperial College London has been at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovation, a unique institution dedicated to enduring excellence in research and education.

Our history Imperial was founded in 1907 with the merger of the Royal School of Mines, the Royal College of Science and the City and Guilds Central Technical College. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, each institution had played a crucial part in establishing science education and research in Britain, employing some of the finest minds in their respective areas of expertise. Each had also found a home in South Kensington, an area which, under the patronage of Prince Albert, had become a hub for science, culture and education. The Royal Charter which formed the Imperial College of Science and Technology described its remit as “giving the highest specialised instruction, and providing the fullest equipment for the most advanced training and research in various branches of science, especially in its application to industry”. The College swiftly began expanding its presence in South Kensington, constructing an extension to the City and Guilds College, a new building for the Royal School of Mines, and the Beit Buildings.

6

During the two world wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45, thousands of Imperial students and staff volunteered for service. On the home front, several of the College buildings were commandeered by the government and military. Staff and alumni undertook critical war-related scientific research in fields including munitions, aeronautics and medicine. The post-war period saw unprecedented growth at Imperial, as science and technology were seen as increasingly critical to facing the challenges of the twentieth century. New disciplines were introduced, including nuclear science and engineering, and computing and control.

After a series of mergers between the College and major medical schools, the Imperial College School of Medicine (now the Faculty of Medicine) was established in 1997. The Business School was granted a status equivalent to a College faculty in 2003, and a year later moved to its current location with the opening of the College Main Entrance. As the College approached its centenary, the decision was made to withdraw from the University of London, a federation of which Imperial had been a part since 1908. The College’s independence was formalised in 2007, and the first students to receive degrees of Imperial College London began their degrees later that year. The Queen’s Tower, under construction in this image from 1886, was originally part of the Imperial Institute. Whilst the rest of the Institute was demolished from 1957 to 1968, the iconic tower was saved by a public campaign and is now in the custody of Imperial.

Leading lights Here are just some of the figures who have shaped our history and changed the world. SIR WILLIAM HENRY PERKIN In 1856, while studying at the Royal College of Chemistry, Perkin discovered the first coal tar dye, mauveine. His discovery of the synthetic purple dye revolutionised fabric colouring, bringing bright colours to the masses for the first time, and transformed the science of chemistry. DR MARTHA ANNIE WHITELEY Whiteley joined the Royal College of Science as a teaching scholar in 1904, and by 1920 had progressed to the role of Assistant Professor. She was the first woman to hold a position on the teaching staff at the College and was awarded the OBE in 1920 for the contribution of her research in the First World War. SIR ALEXANDER FLEMING In the course of his research at St Mary’s Hospital, Fleming discovered the fungal mould penicillium notarum. His 1928 breakthrough, and subsequent work by Sir Ernst Chain and Sir Hugh Florey to isolate and concentrate penicillin, was recognised in 1945 with a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. SIR DEREK BARTON Barton’s work on the spatial arrangements of organic molecules and reactions mechanisms was undertaken while he was Professor of Organic Chemistry between 1957 and 1972. His research transformed how chemists think about molecules in three-dimensional space, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Odd Hassel) in 1969. PROFESSOR JOAN WOODWARD As a lecturer and subsequently professor in Industrial Sociology, Woodward undertook pioneering research into organisational structures in technology and production systems. Woodward Hall, a College Hall of Residence which opened in 2015, was named in her honour. PROFESSOR DENNIS GABOR During the 1940s, Gabor began to experiment with holography, a process which allows the storage of propagating optical wavefronts for later reconstruction. For this research, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971, the first engineer to receive the accolade. PROFESSOR RODNEY ROBERT PORTER Porter was Pfizer Professor of Immunology at St Mary’s Hospital between 1960 and 1967, during which time he conducted research into the blood’s immunoglobin. In 1972, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology with G.M. Edelmen for their work on determining the exact structure of an antibody.

The Sir Michael Uren Hub in White City will drive advances in life-changing medical technologies and treatments.

Our future Imperial College London is one of the world’s leading universities in the fields of science, engineering, medicine and business. Imperial’s strength in these core disciplines has allowed it to push the boundaries of what a university can do, with the community working together to solve major global challenges. World-leading research at Imperial

World-leading research at Imperial Imperial is home to many world-leading pioneers in science, engineering, business and medicine, and the alma mater to generations of award winners, government advisers, business leaders, politicians and entrepreneurs.

Research at the College is multidisciplinary, with academics working with partners around the globe to tackle the greatest challenges we will face in the coming years, from public health and wellbeing, to engineering novel solutions and harnessing the power of big data. Today’s graduates have been firmly embedded in a vibrant, research-led environment, learning alongside researchers who are experts in their fields. Imperial researchers are making new breakthroughs every day. Here are some of the highlights of the past year.

Award-winning solution supports Tanzanian farmers A study by Imperial College Business School examining financial support for farmers has received a Financial Times Responsible Business Education Award. Led by Associate Professor of Actuarial Finance, Dr Enrico Biffis, and Research Fellow, Dr Erik Chavez, the study addresses issues facing farmers in Tanzania who cannot access affordable insurance to protect them against the effects of climate change. Using machine learning to analyse data such as weather variables, soil characteristics and farming practices, the researchers developed a set of criteria by which a farm’s performance could be judged. Working with the World Bank and insurance firm Munich Re, they developed a product for farmers that combines loans and insurance to help protect smallholder farmers, many of whom lack access to basic financial services, which makes managing unexpected emergencies difficult. Dr Biffis said: “Tackling major social issues requires a broad range of skills and ideas. We found that by working directly with market participants and other experts, we were able to come up with an effective solution to the problems facing farmers in this region.”

Many farmers in Tanzania lack access to affordable insurance to protect them against the effects of climate change.

Researchers from the Dyson School of Design Engineering are exploring how artificial intelligence could help develop new immersive audio technologies for virtual and augmented reality environments.

Generating realistic expressions for robotic patients

Uncovering hidden connections with AI

A new approach to producing realistic expressions of pain on robotic patients could help to reduce error and bias during physical examination.

A branch of AI that scans for connections in patterns of stocks and shares has been applied to discovering and mapping connections between proteins.

A team led by researchers at Imperial has developed a way to generate more accurate expressions of pain on the face of medical training robots during the physical examination of painful areas. The team’s findings suggest this could help teach trainee doctors to use clues hidden in patients’ facial expressions to minimise the force necessary for physical examinations. The technique could also help to detect and correct early signs of bias in medical students by exposing them to a wider variety of patient identities. Study author, Sibylle Rérolle from Imperial’s Dyson School of Design Engineering, said: “Improving the accuracy of facial expressions of pain on these robots is a key step in improving the quality of physical examination training for medical students.”

The method aims to speed up life sciences research by automatically updating knowledge and finding new correlations between genes, proteins and small molecules. Many of these are involved in disease and could be targets for new drugs. The technique, known as “natural language understanding”, has been used to find patterns between investments and how they change over time. Now, researchers at Imperial and Vector Space Biosciences have used the technique on academic literature, which can help map – in real time – how proteins relate to each other.

“ Proteins play a role in all the essential functions of our cells, so mapping their interactions, and which other molecules modify these interactions, is of huge importance.” Dr Sarah Rouse, Department of Life Sciences

Faculty of Natural Sciences

Faculty of Natural Sciences Dean’s welcome A very warm welcome to today’s celebrations! It’s wonderful to see so many former students together again, to have the opportunity to congratulate you in person and present you with the degrees you’ve worked so hard for.

I am honoured to celebrate with you and offer my sincere congratulations. In very many ways the pandemic and its consequences have continued to test us all, and these circumstances mean that you have achieved something very special indeed. You have risen to the challenge in these most testing of times.

Professor Richard Craster Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences

As much as today is about your degree, it’s also an opportunity to remember your many other achievements at Imperial. I am always incredibly impressed by the activities you get involved in and dedicate yourselves to beyond your academic studies. It was great to see some of our Chemistry postgraduate students organise a virtual datathon, for example, that brought 75 staff and students from across the Faculty together, pooling their communication skills and scientific understanding to find solutions to real-world problems. Two of our Master’s Physics students turned their first-year undergraduate project, using real data from the Cassini space mission, into a peer-reviewed paper during their studies here. A team of our Life Sciences postgraduates won an LSC Digital Hackathon award for their COVID-19 vaccine smart label – their tamper-secure design is capable of monitoring temperature, ensuring vaccines can be stored safely. Congratulations to you all for these extracurricular accomplishments, and the very many others that our students have accomplished! I am sure that as you all reflect on your years here at Imperial you will realise how much you have changed, both as a person and a scholar. Your experiences during your time here will help you make a success of your next steps wherever they may take you. Although today is a celebration of your hard work, you did not do this alone. Take a moment to think of everyone who has helped you along the way. Postgraduate Graduation is cherished by everyone in our incredible staff community – they celebrate with you, so please join me in thanking them for everything that they do. You will also have been supported by your friends and family; don’t forget to thank them for their love and support. Although most of you are moving on, you are not leaving us. You will always be a part of the Imperial family; we will enjoy watching you succeed and you will always be welcome to visit. I hope you will remain engaged with us, come to alumni events, read the newsletters and I welcome you to the Faculty of Natural Sciences alumni community. Enjoy this special day – it’s your day to relax and celebrate your success: congratulations!

Faculty of Medicine

Faculty of Medicine Dean’s welcome Congratulations, graduands of the Faculty of Medicine! I am delighted to be able to welcome you to today’s ceremony to celebrate your achievements.

Your studies with us will no doubt have been impacted by the most disruptive infectious disease pandemic in a century, and I'm sure you have continued to feel its force as you embarked on the next stage of your careers. Your commitment and capacity to adjust to new circumstances is a huge credit to you and all those who have supported you along the way.

Professor Jonathan Weber Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

We are pleased to be welcoming you back to graduate during a milestone year for the Faculty of Medicine, as we celebrate our twenty-fifth anniversary. In 1997, the undergraduate west London medical schools – St Mary’s, Charing Cross and Westminster – and the postgraduate institutes at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and National Heart and Lung Institute came together to form a single school of medicine within Imperial. The Faculty is built on its collective strengths and is now highly ranked nationally and internationally: a major achievement underpinning Imperial’s status as University of the Year 2022 in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. Your time with us has not only given you the opportunity to grow your knowledge, but to take on new challenges, forge new collaborations and be part of the excitement of developing solutions that have real and positive effects on people’s lives. We aim for an Imperial education to prepare our students with the skill to bring their talents to bear on addressing the needs of the world today, and with the analytical agility to respond to unforeseen challenges in the future. As a Faculty, we aim to live this model also, and you will have seen the world-class research that underpins your Imperial education in action as, together, we responded to the challenges thrown down by COVID-19: through the epidemiological modelling of the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis; the REACT study which has determined population-level data on COVID-19 infection trends; in research studying the implications of ‘long Covid’; and more. You have been part of this community and I do not doubt that you will tackle the health needs of tomorrow head on, and contribute greatly to medical care, science and innovation throughout your careers. I hope that as an alumnus you will continue to be an active part of our dynamic global community. But for today, please simply take pride in your success, thank those who supported you through those important years and enjoy the ceremony!

Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication, and the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship

Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication, and the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship Welcome from the Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) It is with pleasure that I offer my congratulations to all of you on your great achievement. You have had the unique opportunity of studying education and humanitiesoriented subjects in a science, engineering, medicine and business environment, and have gained a perspective which will undoubtedly have provided insights that will serve you extremely well for the future. Today, 43 students graduate from Imperial’s Science Communication Unit. They have followed courses which combine knowledge of the humanities and social sciences with skills in TV and radio production, journalism, exhibition and web design. These graduands join almost 1,000 science communication alumni pursuing careers in the media, policy, museums and public engagement. The programmes’ particular style of teaching celebrates our students’ collaborative and creative instincts, breeding a distinct type of communicator: thoughtful, critical, and imaginative. Professor Emma McCoy Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience)

Eighteen students graduate from the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship with a Master’s in University Learning and Teaching and two students graduate with a PhD. These students are all Imperial staff who have studied part-time alongside busy academic schedules. Their studies have challenged them to think more deeply about their own teaching, learning and educational leadership and to critically engage with the evidence base for educational practice and innovation. In doing this these students become experts in teaching and learning in their disciplines and are inspiring ambassadors for the learning and teaching community at Imperial as a whole. By investing significantly in education, the College is empowering those with educational expertise such as this to design, deliver and inspire the high-class educational experience that prepares Imperial students to solve present and future world challenges. Today’s graduands remain a key part of the College community by providing inspiring examples of alumni activity in previous years. I am very proud of the achievements of all graduands and celebrate with you today as you now join the lifelong Imperial alumni community. I thank all your family and friends who have supported you during your time at Imperial and I wish you all a truly special day.

Imperial College Business School Dean’s welcome First of all: congratulations! What a wonderful day and what a wonderful achievement. It is no small thing to graduate from Imperial College London; it is an institution respected and recognised throughout the world, and that is down to the work, knowledge and impact of our graduates – of you. And neither is it a small thing to have achieved all that you have during a global pandemic; I know the extra challenges you have faced during your studies and to be here today, and I applaud you for the confidence, humility and skill with which you have overcome them. But success is never achieved alone. We all rely on the support, indulgence and love of those closest to us. And so, in this important moment, on behalf of our School, I would like to thank all of those who were part of the journey: thank you.

Professor Francisco Veloso Dean of Imperial College Business School

Ours is an honoured and worthy community of graduates. Students who have passed through the same doors as you have gone on to heal the sick across the globe, to make discoveries that have changed science and society, and to play lead guitar in Queen. Alumni from the Business School sit at some of the most important decisionmaking tables in the world, from America to Australia, in central banks, international agencies, at the helm of great companies, creating startups that will change the world, and driving non-profits that make a difference for the disenfranchised. And so, as I bid you a farewell from the School and the College, I welcome you to our global community of alumni. I am fully confident that you will go on to do incredible things, to improve business and better society in ways I cannot imagine now – and as you do, remember us. We want to know of your successes, of your achievements, as we will remain here, ready to support, ready to advise, and – most of all – to applaud. Once again, congratulations – and welcome.

Meet your fellow alumni

Meet your fellow alumni From exploring the wonders of the universe to tackling very human problems, Imperial alumni are making an impact around the world.

Ambassador Yvette Stevens MSC ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEMS AND MACHINES 1974 “Girls growing up in colonial Sierra Leone weren’t taught science at secondary school, but we did study general science, which really interested me. I was given provisional entry into sixth form in a boys’ school. There were only two girls in a class of 18 boys and, because not everyone believed in girls doing science, the boys used to tease us. It made us work so hard, and we did better than the boys.” As Sierra Leone’s first female engineer, Yvette Stevens broke the mould early in her career. Her talent and ambition saw her rise to Director, the highest professional rank possible at the UN, take the lead in developing her country’s first energy policy and be chosen by Sierra Leone’s president as the country’s first Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.

“ At Imperial I was taught to be ingenious and to work independently. That made me very innovative and has served me well throughout my life.” Ambassador Yvette Stevens (MSc Electrical Power Systems and Machines 1974)

96

“I wanted to serve my country in whatever capacity I could, and this was the best way for me to do that. I would like to be remembered as someone who has worked hard in every respect in whatever I do in life. At every place I’ve worked, I’ve tried to do my best and the results show. “You meet alumni from Imperial everywhere – even here in Geneva. Of course, I had no idea I would end up working for the UN, but my time at Imperial prepared me for this. The education you get from Imperial is second to none. “Persevere and make the most of all the opportunities that come your way to improve yourself and your future.”

Dr Gabriele Messori

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard

PHD ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS AND DYNAMICS 2013

PHD CLINICAL MEDICINE 1999

“I’m interested in weather events that happen in the mid-latitudes. I believe that to get something out of the research you must look at the whole continuum, from the theoretical depiction of the extremes to the practical applications.”

“During my time at Imperial, I learnt many of the key scientific concepts and methods that I have applied in my career. It was the broadest scientific training and it was invaluable. Perhaps most important were the generous scientists and students in the lab, who were willing to help me learn.”

Gabriele Messori is on a mission to help the scientific community and beyond gain a holistic understanding of climate extremes. To do this, he combines a variety of approaches, from applied mathematics to statistics, atmospheric dynamics to societal impacts. He is already widely recognised for his work in his field. “I always wanted to do a PhD. But I thought I should see what working in the private sector was like first. After this experience, I knew that academia was the right path for me. Working in research gives me freedom – I can choose what I dedicate my time to which is really important for me. “I think research really allows you to shape your career early on. In other industries, you have to wait until you’re more senior to get that. The research communities are very close-knit. They’re not just colleagues, they become your friends. “Imperial was excellent at giving me an understanding of how physics and science can be applied outside academia. I also had opportunities to do other things that allowed me to engage with the community at the University, such as teaching. My time at Imperial provided me much more than just scientific and technical knowledge.”

Andrew Pollard has dedicated his career to improving both child and adult health through immunisation. He is Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immunity at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group. Amongst other commitments, he is also presently Chief Investigator for the global clinical trials of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which has led to authorisation of the vaccine for use in more than 170 countries, with 1 billion doses distributed by the end of July 2021. “These are unusual times – there is no typical day when working on developing a vaccine which will be given to more than a billion people. It has been intense; it is a huge responsibility and at times can be relentless, but the work is the same as for other vaccines I have worked on over the past 20 years. The new experience here is the feverish interest in what we are doing by the media. Coming to work seems normal until I look out of the window and realise the whole world has been watching. “I feel that it was a huge privilege to have had the experiences I had with the people at Imperial at such an important moment in my personal development. Who I am today is deeply grounded in the research, clinical experiences and people who guided me at Imperial.”

Meet your fellow alumni

Dr Reza Jarral

Lucy Jung

MBBS 2010

MSC INNOVATION DESIGN ENGINEERING 2019

“As a doctor, I listen to people’s stories, I hear them cry, hold their hands when they lose loved ones. I want to use the privileges I experience for the greater good, namely mitigating for unintended harms when it comes to disruptive technology and innovation.”

“The highlights are always the user testing, hearing people with Parkinson’s say that they like the device, seeing them go for a long walk or dancing, and having them tell us about how they felt better.”

Tackling inequality is a top priority for Dr Reza Jarral, whether he’s treating vulnerable patients as a GP, or working on the design of an AI-powered approach to predict infectious diseases in refugees. Reza is working on an ongoing project with the World Health Organization investigating how we can measure the safety of AI when diagnosing conditions. “What has been amazing is the collaboration I’ve witnessed across disparate specialities, backgrounds and even competing organisations. There’s sometimes a lot of fear surrounding the future, but with work like this, there is also a tremendous amount of hope. “Reflecting on my journey as a medical student sometimes paralysed with nervousness, unable to get a word out on the wards, I have been struck by the number of generous and kind people who have given me the confidence to become bolder in recent years. Courage is not innate: it’s one of the most important skills to develop. With this courage you can lean into discomfort and learn to celebrate failure as a learning experiment. “At Imperial, you’re surrounded by the brightest minds and the kindest hearts. They see you at your best and your worst. It’s this camaraderie that got me through the tough times.”

98

Lucy Soo Min Jung is the co-founder of Charco Neurotech, which makes wearable tech to relieve Parkinson’s symptoms. Their device, CUE1, is a non-invasive medical device worn on the chest that uses controlled vibration and cueing to offer relief and improvement to a wide range of physical symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It can help patients walk, move their hands and use tools more quickly and easily. It represents a move away from the idea of designing separate devices for different tasks and is instead a simple and elegant device that may improve a wide range of motor dysfunction symptoms. “CUE1 is a perfect example of how a design-project-based approach can lead to a device that improves people’s quality of life. The project started while I was doing my Master’s course in Innovation Design Engineering. We visited Imperial’s Enterprise Lab, and the journey started from there. They introduced us to lots of programs and grant opportunities and we applied for the White City Innovators’ Programme, where we met with our mentor. It was on this Innovations programme that we first pitched our idea, and where we decided to start this journey. “I want to reach as many people with Parkinson’s as possible and listen to what they say about how we can make their life easier and better. If you have a strong vision and you believe in it, always go for it.”

Postgraduate Graduation 2022

Support the next generation of students Medicine student Yasmin’s world has transformed thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends. Our community of donors ensure financial need is never a barrier to an Imperial education.

With your help, we can continue to provide essential bursaries to disadvantaged and deserving students, attract the brightest and best with scholarships, and meet the needs of those facing sudden financial hardship which casts their future at Imperial into doubt. EVERY GIFT MATTERS Last year, over 3,300 donors gave £666,000 to support students across the College. The cumulative value of many graduates giving a small gift as they leave Imperial can make a profound difference.

5 graduate gifts of £5 can pay for a weekly travelcard for a student struggling to meet the costs of traveling to campus.

50 graduate gifts of £5 can help a student buy a new laptop or equipment for their course.

100 graduate gifts of £5 can support an Imperial student in unexpected financial hardship.

Give today www.imperial.ac.uk/giving/2022-graduation

Your support will secure the futures of the next generation working in science, medicine, engineering and business.

“ The bursary has helped me cover my university costs, allowing me to fully immerse myself in university life and take advantage of all opportunities, without having to constantly think about finances. Without support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Your kind action will always be remembered.” Yasmin, Medicine
