WELCOME

We are delighted to introduce the 2023 programme for the ESRC Festival of Social Science in Northern Ireland.

Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University have collaborated to create an engaging and enlightening line-up of discussions, exhibitions, workshops and tours. This diverse programme highlights the breadth and quality of social science research conducted by our academics. And, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS, this year’s festival includes a number of events themed around lifelong wellbeing.

The Festival is an annual, UK-wide celebration of social science and the contribution it makes to major societal and economic challenges. It offers a fascinating insight into some of the country’s leading social science research and how it influences our lives –now and in the future.

This programme was made possible thanks to funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Conversations - ‘The Story

I want my Life to be’ - Next Steps

This event unveils findings from the Conversations Project, a collaboration between Queen’s and the Greater Shankill Children and Young People Zone. The project engaged children and youth in the Shankill community, enabling them to share their current and potential future lives, or to put it simply, to help them discover ‘the story they want their life to be’. The event brings together children, teachers and researchers to explore if, and how, things have changed and what the next steps should be.

Making Business Better? Ethics and Sustainability in Organisations

It remains an enduring myth that ethics and sustainability only apply to large international organisations with limited, if any, applicability in a local SME context. This event shines a light on the vibrant local SME business community that places integrity and business responsibility at the heart of all that it does. Drawing on recent research largely within the business community in NI, the workshop will explore the relationship between ethics, sustainability and ‘good’ business practice.
