Welcome to the winter edition of County Golfer.

ere it is again. Winter presents its own beauty where golf is concerned. The changing landscape gives our game more choices on placing of shots. Trees without leaves can afford us a little more freedom with nothing but thin branches in our way. In this months edition you will notice that many clubs are offering tempting deals on rounds, while others are trying to attract new members with some tasty membership fees.

So many courses have embarked on improvements in drainage over the last two years recognising that golfers need to keep playing whatever the weather. Common sense also needs to be applied as in winter courses can take a lot of stick especially after heavy rain. Mats are one way to preserve fairways and tees but are not always the perfect answer to having a good round.

In this edition the lads were invited to Prestbury and Moortown, courses out of our normal area, but nonetheless courses that recognise that golfers are not afraid to travel or pay for a great round of golf in dry conditions.

We also played in the annual Morley Hayes Golf Competition and lost. We really need to brush up on counting our strokes better as it's three years since we won!

We hope that we have something for all to enjoy in this edition.

Breadsall Moorlands

Designed by architect Donald Steele back in 1991 the Moorland course at Breadsall Priory is the first choice for the winter golfer.

This free draining course is playable for the majority of the year unless of course there's snow on the ground, but then most courses are the same when that happens.

Lefty and Newby played this course last year and their comments still hold true today.

We arrived at 10:30 and our tee time was 10:50, could we squeeze in a bacon cob, a coffee, get our golf clubs together, our shoes on and be on the tee in time for our tee slot? Absolutely! Last year we had virtually turned this into an art form, so it was nice to know that we hadn’t lost any of our sharpness.

As I mentioned, we had chosen the most beautifully sunny day, it was perfect for golf. We’d had quite a bit of rain in the previous few days, but as the Moorland course is based on sandstone, the drainage is excellent and keeps it from getting boggy. This is one of the reasons this course gets played a lot more than the Priory, especially during the winter months. With this in mind, I was expecting the course to look a little bit tired and well played. But this simply wasn’t the case. The course looked fresh and well manicured throughout, with the greens in especially good condition.

You start with a short par-3 which in fairness was not all that inspiring, however, when you cross the road to the second hole the course really opens up in front of you and you start to see why it’s held in such high esteem.

After a dodgy start by myself and Lefty on the first, we soon got into our stride.

The second presents a great opportunity for some pars and a birdie, but at its full 452 yards, it’s a real challenge so early on in the round.

Breadsall Moorlands Onto the third fairway; firstly it drops away in front of you, then rises up over a brow, then drops away again, and then rises back up to the green! This makes it look great, however, none of it should really come into play. A good drive on a dry day will leave you on the fringe of the green. I landed just a couple of yards short and the Badger landed just to the right. A simple chip onto the two tiered green should leave you with a steady par.

The 4th tee gives you a great view across the city of Derby. As we stood in our short sleeve shirts and shorts looking at the city we took a minute to appreciate that there are far worse places we could have been on a Monday morning. Maybe this is how all Mondays should start!

Myself and the Badger were pretty much trading blows for the first nine holes going out in 6 and 7 over respectively. The wide dry fairways really lending themselves to good

drives, it’s amazing the extra carry you get on a dry well cut fairway, and the difference it makes to your approach shot.

The sixth hole is a beautiful little par 3, at just 118 yards it’s only a wedge, but with bunkers either side and rough behind, you have to be accurate. The tall trees wrap around the green and frame it beautifully. Three shots on to the green, three pars, golf can be such a simple game sometimes!

One of the big changes over the years has been the reduction of the rough, if you miss the fairway you will still find your ball, but your next shot will be a challenge. Again this goes back to the philosophy of Donald Steele, golf is all about enjoyment, not about loosing 10 balls a round. This course punishes you for a slightly wayward drive, but it doesn’t completely destroy you. It’s a great balance .

The back nine follow the flowing, lightly undulating nature of the first nine. It’s a very open course, which means you can see many of the holes from the elevated tees, and on a busy day many golfers too. But lines of trees, bushes and stonewalls keep you on your toes.

Venture too far off the fairway and you will be struggling to get to the green with a chance of a respectable score.

The Moorland course is incredibly enjoyable to play, it’s in great condition, you will most

likely (but you can’t hold me to this!) make one of your better scores here. I don’t know about you, but I play golf as a hobby, to help me relax, to enjoy myself, and you can’t help but enjoy yourself on the Moorland.

In the end I shot my best score for a long time but it wasn’t quite enough to beat the Badger, who beat me by just the single shot....but, it was a great tussle throughout. And as for Lefty…… well let’s just say he took some great photos!

The dilemma of the

winter golfer

here to play during the winter months and still get to play a decent course that does not have you putting your waders on to get a good round, is always a problem?

Don’t worry, here at County Golfer HQ we have gone before you to find three great courses that laugh in the face of rain and winter tees, in fact we have sourced three courses that between them have hosted the Ryder Cup, Curtis Cup, R & A Open Qualifiers just to mention a few, and have all been designed by the famous course designer  Dr Alister MacKenzie.

Dear fellow golfer, I introduce to you Moortown, Alwoodley and Ganton.

Moortown report by Lefty Moortown has always held a richly deserved reputation as one of the country’s finest Championship Golf courses. Originally designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, Moortown is set in 175 acres of dramatically contrasting, mainly level woodland and moorland.

From the opening par 5 there are many fine holes to enjoy including the new 6th, rated the most difficult, and the famous Gibraltar par 3 10th with its sloping plateau green, the Club’s signature hole.

The day we chose to play was after 48 hours of torrential rain with many golf clubs in the area closed, but not Moortown, they were not even playing off winter mats, a testament to how well the course drains.

Before you start you must look around the club house as it is steeped in history. Having been the club to host the first ever Ryder Cup on European Soil, the memorabilia is fantastic and there are some great golf stories to be heard and seen, such as the golfer Nigel Denham who was playing in the Brabazon Trophy competition. Let’s get on to the course, which is 6452 yards off the yellow tees, par 71, and off the red tees it’s 5939 yards par 75. From this yardage you know your in for quite a test.

The first is a nice hole to get you warmed up, a 488 yard par 5. You tee off from a nicely elevated tee looking down a sloping fairway. The only problem here is, for most golfers like myself, there are several fairway bunkers sat just about where you would drive to. I did as all good golfer do, ‘hit and hope’ and managed to miss them all! From this point the fairway narrows with a ditch either side to catch a wayward ball. Negotiate through this successfully, you will then have a shot at the green which is well protected by bunkers. Somehow I managed to miss all the hazards on this hole and got a par. This games is easy!!

Moving onto the second you get to see across most of the course. It did remind me a lot of Sherwood Forest Golf Course in the way it looks, with well placed trees and open spaces where the hummocks can grow,

and some gorse bushes dotted here and there. I felt quite at home. This hole, a 440 yard par 4, needs a nice straight drive but not too far as a ditch lies diagonally across the fairway. I laid up short of this but I still needed to hit the elevated green. Coming up short I managed to skip the ball up to the hole for my third, and in for another par! I was on fire....,but would this run continue?

I was about to be humbled by the 4th a long par 4 at 436 yards. They have cleverly put a cross bunker here which most of us will struggle to get over, but because I think I’m a better golfer than I really am, I tried to drive over it, and failed. If you managed to get over this you would still need a well hit wood to get any chance of a par, as I struggled to get out of the bunker. I was hit with my first 7 of the day.

You find on a championship course that sometimes only a good, well struck drive will do. Hole 5 is a good example of this as it’s a relatively short par 4 at only 340 yards, but it’s a true dog leg left, and from the tee there is a wilderness of gorse and heather bushes between you and the fairway. Many a golf ball has been sacrificed to the golf gods here! Avoiding this it’s a 5 iron to the green, fortunately we all

managed to get away. I rattled the hole for a birdie, so it’s all about the drive.

Hole six is the first of the new holes introduced when changes to the course were made in 1989 and more recently altered in 2012. Once etched out of the woodland, the hole has been modified to represent the heathland feel that MacKenzie initially designed.

Many of the birch and rowan trees that once lined the fairway have been removed, to be replaced by bunkers and areas where the natural heath will again return. You can see that Moortown have repeated this around the course, just like Sherwood did themselves some years back, the result of this is that it keeps the shade off the greens and fairways, stopping them getting boggy and attracting unwanted diseases that attack the greens.

One of my favourite holes has to be the 10th or ‘Gibraltar’ as it’s known to the locals. A very

picturesque hole to look at and play. It’s 172 yard Par 3 teeing off up to an elevated green which sits on top of steep banks and nestles into a rocky slope at the back, hence the name ‘Gibraltar’. There are bunkers scooped into the side of the slopes, so either you hit the green or you end up trying to chip out of a bunker with the green above your head. Fortunately both Newby and myself hit the green, but even putting here is a challenge as the green slopes back toward the tee. Even with the rain the day before they were playing fast. I managed a par but I can imagine that if the greenkeepers were in a bad mood they could really put the flag in some very challenging positions.

You now head out to the furthest point of the course where you will have to face some blind tee shots and clusters of fairway bunkers hidden from view.

The course here really opens up with the moorland coming through.

The course starts to tighten up as you approach the 15th. . I decided to play this hole with an iron, which was the right choice especially with my sometimes wild slice. Accuracy is needed here, in fact both this hole and the 16th will punish a wayward drive with ditches and fairway bunkers and trees waiting to catch you out. My advice is, if like me you hit a wayward drive then stick to your ions.

The 18th is an excellent finishing hole, you can just imagine what it was like back when the Ryder Cup was played here, holding your nerve as crowds of people watched. After Newby and myself got two nice tee shots away we could see the club house welcoming us home.

Visually it’s a nice approach shot to the green but now is not the time to duff your shot as you are being watched from the club house. We both managed to miss the windows unlike Nigel Denham, (check our Facebook page for his story), and sink our puts for a couple of pars.

Sitting in the club house surrounded by golfing history we both agreed that Moortown is a special place, you feel at home here and we were in no rush to get away. The course was in excellent condition.

I would say that this course is an honest course, if you go in the rough you still have a chance of finding your ball and getting out. The greens run so true they are a joy to put on, and, in true MacKenzie style, the bunkers are well thought out and dare you to go for the risk to reap the reward.

A

lwoodley is a Dr Alistair MacKenzie course, which means it has the MacKenzie ethos of variety, natural beauty, and risk/reward shot making. Even today, the club has not changed the original layout of the course but what they have managed to do is introduce championship tees which lengthen the course to 6,900 yards, which has helped them attract some prestigious competitions such as the R&A Open Regional Qualifying Competition.

They have implemented improvements such as management of the rough and semi rough, reducing the irritation of searching for lost golf balls. Course architect Ken Moodie was called in to reinstate several original bunkers which help challenge and improve the spectacle of the course. This, along with the full refurbishment of the stunning club house has put Alwoodley in a very strong position going forward.

Arriving at Alwoodley you know you are in for something special as the club house has the look of a French Chateau. Food is ordered via a phone on the bar and I would highly recommend the full English. The pro-shop is just to the side of the first tee and is very well stocked. The locker rooms have just been refurbished with the gent’s shower rooms more akin to a Mayfair hotel.

The tight, springy, fast-running fairways are cut out of heather and gorse.

Cunningly bunkered, the large greens are undulating and allow for many interesting pin positions.

The overall feel of the course is of a natural moorland with fairway cutting through heather, whins and shrubs, with well-placed bunkers and large undulating greens which, even on a rainy day, are immaculate and play fast. As it stands, Alwoodley is ranked at No.13 in the UK though this may soon change.

Ganton

Ganton is certainly a course that can be discussed in the same breath as St Andrews, Royal Birkdale, Royal St Georges. Ranked Number 9 in the U.K.'s top courses, and having held the Ryder Cup the Curtis Cup and the Walker cup, the club has some real pedigree.

F

irst opened in 1891 as Scarborough Golf Club, the course was soon put on the map by the great Harry Vardon, the then captain. The course continued to develop and change, with the likes of Harry Colt, Alister MacKenzie, and Tom Simpson all making their mark on it. That was until the late 1930s, since then the course has been left pretty much alone in its design. To get an idea of how highly regarded this club is, just check out their website and the long list of competitions it has held over the years; the stand outs being the 1954 Ryder cup as well as the Curtis and Walker cups at the turn of the century.

When you arrive you instantly realise that you are in a world where golf is changing and rules are constantly being relaxed, Ganton have taken the approach of sticking to their traditions. Ganton’s policy of ‘tailored shorts may be worn but only with single colour knee length socks’ might catch a few out. We received a very warm welcome at the club and learned that the main focus over the next few years will be the completion of the renovation of the 100+ bunkers.

The sand base of the course means that there isn’t really a perfect window to play Ganton in, it’s as good both in the summer as the winter. So look out for their winter offers. It might not be the cheapest round you play, but pound to quality wise, I can’t think there’s anywhere better.

The Course itself has an inland links feel to it, fast, sandy and gently undulating fairways, weave around the gorse and heather. This is explained by the fact that thousands of years ago the area would actually have been a beach. One of the stand out features of the course is the bunkers, put simply, you will end up in one. Placed perfectly around the course to catch anything slightly wayward, they are the main obstacle to try and avoid, and, when you first go in one, you’ll want to avoid them even more! The vast majority have been revamped recently and the sand is perfect to play out of. But the depth of them is just something else.

JAMES WHATLEY I'm writing this article whilst on holiday in St Andrews, the home of golf.

W

e have come to celebrate my son Jays 10th birthday.

We have played, Archerfield on the way up, then played the Strathtyrum, Castle, and Eden courses. Golf is our family glue, we all play and it’s one thing we can all do together, stay fit, enjoy, laugh and definitely get frustrated together. It will hopefully allow us to travel the world together and enjoy playing lots of different courses. If you haven’t visited St Andrews, I can highly recommend it. If you have a family that don’t play golf, get them to give it a go.

We are in November, there have been a few frosts, the clocks have changed, winter is officially here. What does that mean for golfers?

Winter mats, winter greens, course closed emails, no trolleys, no buggies.

If this is happening to you, come and play at Morley Hayes. We will be open, have buggy paths, and will remain on proper tees and greens all winter. Some will say that this will ruin the course, but I’ve seen the condition of the course for the last 16 summers and we have some of the best fairways in the county.

The last few months of my golf season definitely tested me. I had increasingly got frustrated, lost motivation to practice and really didn’t want to compete. I had to snap myself out of it, but I found this so hard.

I wrote an email to my clients asking them to sign up to my winter coaching programs, and realised I was asking them to commit to getting better, but I wasn’t willing to do the same myself. This gave me a reality check, do I give up playing or do I do something about it. The latter was the only choice and I’m pleased to say in the last event of the season, the Midland PGA Championships, I finished 3rd with 69 and 67 at Shifnal.

I’ve addressed my nutrition which has made a massive difference to my energy levels. It’s been fascinating learning about the correct foods that I need to take in to allow my body and mind to function at its best.

This winter I will travel to Portugal at the end of November for a four day, pro am, then in the new year, I will be in Turkey in January and March, and in Spain in February, delivering coaching and playing trips.

My season will get going in April.

How can you improve this winter?

Morley Hayes this winter.

The next five months is the perfect time to get your game in shape for the start of the season. I would encourage you to start by setting a goal for next year. This is like having a destination in your sat nav. It’s so important to know where you want to go / achieve.

It would be great to see you down at Morley Hayes this winter, whether it’s for a meal, a game or just a drink.

After that, sit down and look at the obvious and easiest things you can change to get better. I would encourage you do this with your PGA Professional, if you need help with this please get in touch with myself or one of my EMGA Professionals.

One of the things I see when people practice in the winter, is they are just working on their swing. If you had a basket of 60 balls on the Morley Hayes Driving range, I would recommend you break the basket down;

Balls 1-10: Chipping, up to a max distance of 15 yards. This helps get a feel for the ball on the club.

Balls 11-20: Pitching distances, work from 20 yards to 110 yards.

Balls 21-42: Swing work, take your time, lots of rehearsals of the correct move.

Balls 43-60: Go through the 18 tee shots of your home / favourite course. This will get you to use lots of your clubs in your bag, make sure you go through your pre-shot routine.

Prestbury A golf course with a pedigree

P

restbury, as part of the golden triangle, is referred to as one of the poshest villages in the UK. A beautifully quaint little village that now has a host of footballers and celebrities living there, the area is becoming the place to live. But is the golf club there the place to play golf?

Prestbury golf course was founded in the 1920s and was designed

by Harry Colt, designer of Muirfield, Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s, Sunningdale New Course, St George’s Hill, the Eden Course at St. Andrews, Wentworth (East and West Courses), Rye and Royal Portrush

to name just a few. The area for the course was picked due to its dramatic and sharp elevation changes, and Colt has clearly made the very best of this creating some of the most stunning holes you’ll ever find. But be warned, these big elevation changes make it a real trek, it’s not a course for the unfit!

It came as a real surprise to me to learn that the course lies on only 90 acres of land, relatively small for an 18 hole course, but you’d never know this, as the course is structured in a way that makes it feel far, far bigger.

PRESTBURY GOLF CLUB The club has hosted many county and national competitions, including the English Seniors Championship and Open Championship Regional Qualifying. In 2020, their Centenary year, they will be hosting the Reid Trophy (English Boys’ Under 14’s Championship).

Despite the terrible weather we’re currently having, we somehow managed to play on a beautifully sunny but cold winters day. The course had drained really well, and with the exception of the 7th and 8th you’d never have guessed we’d had so much rain. The greens all rolled fantastically and some of the fairways were as good as I’ve ever played on.

After a disaster of a round the previous week at Moortown Golf Club I was determined that I would bounce back, and opted to play the first few holes with irons to get back in the swing. A 459 par 5 would be seen by some as a good birdie opportunity, but when you’re recovering from a shocker, you’re just happy to hit fairways again! It plays gently down into a valley before rising back up to a generously sized green. A nice easy starter hole.

The par 4 5th hole is a great challenge of accuracy, a steady drive onto the fairway will leave you 100-120 yards into the pin, but with the green so narrow, elevated up and surrounded by bunkers and trees, it’s either land on the green or you’ll be in a world of pain. Lefty hit the right of the green and bounced back down the hill finishing with a 6. I went slightly over and landed in the rough behind the green and managed to rescue a 5.

The 9th hole is the stroke index 1, and is well deserving of this ranking. The tee gives you incredible views over the course, and is a pleasure to tee off from. But don’t let its beauty deceive you, it’s an incredibly challenging 455 yard par 4. A very elevated tee shot plays over a brow and if you get enough distance on it, it’ll run down the hill into a valley, still leaving a big uphill tight approach to a narrow green. As a medium handicapper, I’d take a 5 on this hole any day!

The 11th is a great opportunity for a birdie, a 489 yard par 5, with a good drive over the brow, the fairway then sweeps to the right and down towards the inviting green, with just the 1 bunker protecting the green you can take it on with your second shot. It’s a hole that really rewards you for being brave.

Prestbury backs up its exceptional course with some exceptional facilities too. The club also has a 27-acre practice ground with purpose built grass tee, long and short game areas and indoor teaching facility.

If you venture into the clubhouse you’ll find an award winning chef preparing some great food, giving an extra bit of quality to a society day.

I’m calling 2019 the Year of Rain! For pretty much every time we here at County Golfer went out to review a course we got soaked, mainly because I think ‘Spence’, or Noah as we now call him, was playing with us. We are thinking of sending him around the world wherever there is a drought!

ou will be pleased to hear that ‘Noah Spence’ kept up his record when we were invited to play the Morley Hayes Golf Day. Frantic phone calls were going between the office and Morley Hayes with such questions as “Are you sure it’s still on”? And “are you really, really sure it’s still on”? “Yes” the reply kept coming back.

It’s a testament to Morley Hayes and the green staff that they managed to keep the course open, yes there were times when a small river had appeared and ran across the green, but I found if you hit it on the current, it carried the ball right into the hole!!

Spence our Capitan. I was in his good books this time unlike last year.

The food after the game was warmly welcomed, and it has to be said that Morley Hayes know how to entertain, the meal and the wine was second to none.

A big thank you to the Allsops for their hospitality and to the Staff, that as always make it a truly pleasant experience, in fact it’s something we look forward to every year. We must also say a well done to Max and the green staff for managing to keep the course open.

Fame Tate, owner and director of Stanedge Golf Club, Chesterfield, Derbyshire has been shortlisted into the final two for the “Newcomer Manager of the Year” for the 2019 GCMA Golf Club Management Awards, which take place in November.

Fame has lived in Chesterfield all her life, despite travelling whilst she was playing golf on the Ladies European and Asian Tours. In February this year, she purchased Stanedge Golf Club, which closed in December 2018 and had lost all of it’s members.

Fame and her team are now in their eighth month of business and what an incredible eight months it has been, in more ways than one. Earlier this year, Fame was named the PGA Female Assistant of the Year and the top PGA student for the Midlands, 2019, plus being crowned the winner of the “Outstanding Achievement” award for the English Women’sNorth Business Awards category.

How do you feel about being short listed for this award?

I am absolutely delighted to be short listed for the award and I feel incredibly proud of what we accomplished in a matter of months at the club and it is fantastic for this to be recognised

What was your thought process when you had purchased Stanedge Golf Club?

When I purchased the club, I had a strong vision, ambitions and aspirations of what I wanted to achieve in terms of the club as a whole. But in simple terms, I had to ask myself what was our future?

What did we need to do to get there?

How did we need to work together?

I wanted the club to thrive again in every aspect and I strongly believed that it had fantastic potential and could be achieved. Of course, there is a lot more to it than that. I had done an enormous amount of market research and demographic segmentation, plus having a strategic business plan in place.

My passion since retiring from professional golf has always been to get more people into golf by giving them the opportunity to learn and play but not only to recruit them but to retain them. I am guided by what I want to achieve at the club and its future. It’s not just a vision, it’s what the vision does. This is what drives my ambition every day. I care and it matters and that it is what has made me put all of my energies into the transformation of Stanedge.

As a business we have grown and developed massively over the last few months and we have had to move

and change with it. All along I have been mindful that wherever possible I have had to re-invest back into the business to make it grow, develop and thrive.

You have been so successful in turning the club around from zero to over a 100 members in a matter of months, what has been to key to that?

The biggest thing for me from the start was for people to see change. The clubhouse was incredibly run down, which is putting it mildly and the golf course wasn’t in great shape. Everything just needed an awful lot of TLC. The previous members had lost faith in the club and visitors were not coming due to the poor condition of everything. I wanted everyone to see that we were there for the long haul, that we meant business and wanted to put Stanedge Golf Club back on the map. As a consequence of this, the clubhouse has been completely refurbished and the golf course has undergone an extensive improvement plan, which is obviously an ongoing process.

We have put so many initiatives

in place since February to raise awareness and the profile of the club. We held an Easter fun open day in April which attracted over 100 people and was a huge success.

We run various coaching initiatives for existing golfers and those who are new to the game, for ladies, men, juniors and mixed coaching. We have held a 6@6 league for Congu and non-Congu golfers, social nights, various offers to incentivise people to come to the club for golf or food…. the list goes on and on.

You can not underestimate the power of word of mouth and over the last eight months we have re-gained people’s faith and trust back in the club. We have created an environment that is accessible, affordable, friendly, social and welcoming for everyone, whether you are a golfer or not. We don’t have a dress code, but people are still respectful of that. We are constantly developing what we are doing at the club, to make Stanedge a better place for members and visitors. For me it is more than just golf, we are providing people with an experience and building a new community and culture. www.countygolfer.co.uk 41

FAME TATE every member of my team to feel empowered and have a sense of ownership, giving them a reason to go the extra mile. The whole team needs to succeed, no matter what their role or responsibility in order for the club to be a continued success. There is no committee structure in place at the club so if a decision is made, we are in a unique position to be able to run with it. After all of the decisions that are made, we reflect, re-assess and change accordingly for the better of the golf club.

You obviously have to wear many different hats being the owner, the golf club manager and PGA professional at the club…how have you managed to juggle all of these very different roles and your staff?

Time management has been key, however sometimes there haven’t been enough hours in the day, plus hard work and the ability to 42 www.countygolfer.co.uk

delegate. As a manager of the club, I won’t ask any member of team to do something that I am not willing to do myself. I accept that I can’t do everything. I have a small but very strong team of staff who I trust with their responsibilities, which enables me to focus my time on other elements of the business. It has been so important for me to surround myself with the right people. Every member of my team brings something different to the table which is crucial as everyone sees things differently. I encourage collaboration, team meetings and brain storming sessions. I want

With the nights drawing in and the clocks going back I find myself writing this article in the warmth of the clubhouse. The clubhouse is certainly cosier than when I took over eight months ago, now with a country living theme in mind it’s given such a lovely ambience and feel. We are currently embracing the change in season, our menu is evolving into hearty meals, warm bar snacks and homemade soups using seasonal produce from local suppliers..., perfect for the walker passing by or the hungry golfer. Mornings in the clubhouse have become a regular destination for ladies who coffee and cake, social groups and clubs, members and non-members alike.

Our in house baker Nicki has been creating some exceptional cakes as well as her popular scones. For those wanting to take a tasty treat home for a sneaky treat or to share, our “take home” boxes are an absolute hit. The food side of things has grown bigger than I could ever imagined over the last few months and we have introduced weekly Sunday Luncheon. With the arrival of local cook Yvonne Walker, our kitchen team has expanded. Yvonne comes with quite a following and reputation for serving her amazing locally sourced Sunday roasts. November will be the second month of our popular quiz night,

welcoming non-members and members. Dimmed lights and beautifully lit table accessories offer a great setting, with a hearty meal and a chance to open the box. It has become a blast and seen many new faces each week, creating a great sense of community. In addition to all of this I have made the decision to name the bar and restaurant “Tyzack’s Bar & Restaurant,” after Bill Tyzack……so who was Bill or “Mr. Stanedge”? Bill Tyzack was born in the east end of London, in a terraced house owned by the giant Tate & Lyle sugar refinery, where his father worked as head timekeeper.

Golf was not a sport played a great

deal by east end Londoners at that time and his chosen game was football, where he played in goal.

When he moved to Chesterfield, he, of course, felt the need to become a member of a local club and as well as joining Hardwick Probus, he joined Stanedge Golf club. This was his introduction to the sport and it wasn’t long before he was challenging himself to be the best that he could be, whilst endeavouring to assist with the running of the club in any small way that he could. It wasn’t long before he took on the mantle of club press officer, writing a weekly report on club affairs and tournament results for the county newspaper. Humour was always a

major part of his writing.

When the position of club secretary became vacant, Bill was a natural for the job. A position that he held for over 20 of his 30 year membership of Stanedge, becoming club Captain in 2003 and overseeing many changes including the purchase of the land in 1995.

Having suffered a stroke which left his right side paralysed, some thought that this would be the end of Bill’s involvement with Stanedge golf club and certainly, his time as press officer. They were wrong!

Despite being right handed, he taught himself to use his left hand and continued to type reports on his trusted Remington portable typewriter, carbon paper and all.

His last report on Stanedge Golf Club was actually published in the Debyshire Times on the day of his funeral in 2011. To quote it’s editor: “His dedication to Stanedge Golf Club was clear from the outset and his desire to keep it in the headlines burned brightly right until the end”.

Bill Tyzack became known as ‘Mr. Stanedge’ and it was a title well earned and well deserved as he left no stone unturned to keep the golf club alive and thriving. Everyone speaks so very highly and fondly of Bill, about his tireless work and service at Stanedge Golf Club.

I am moving the club forward away from the traditional golf club model, putting Stanedge Golf Club back on the map and I am trying to convey a message that we are open to the public, with a very relaxed atmosphere and ambience.

Naming the bar and restaurant after Bill, seems the perfect fit and I feel strongly that it is important to retain some of the club’s previous history and Bill’s memory, whilst driving the golf club forward.

his year Chevin Golf Club celebrated its 125th anniversary. A traditional members Golf Club Chevin has moved with the times and offers an excellent golf course, expertly maintained, and with stunning views of the Derbyshire Countryside.

Over the last five years the club has made many improvements to both course and clubhouse.

Buggies were introduced and have proved to be so popular to both members and visitors that we are increasing the fleet of buggies available for hire.

Next year we will have a fleet of 12 buggies available.

Our Professional Tim Stevens, has completely refurbished his shop and now has a shop and teaching studio with the latest equipment for sale and modern technology for teaching in his studio.

He offers excellent service and customer care is the top priority.

The clubhouse has had a major refurbishment and further improvements are planned for the future.

Our main social celebration was a masked ball held exactly 125 years to the date of the first committee meeting of Chevin Golf Club. Chevin has a special friendship with Stratford Golf Club, who were also celebrating their 125th year.

Sadly, due to very wet weather the annual past captains match had to be cancelled, but a mixed away day was held at Stratford and many members attended. A very happy day was had by all. The winners received specially made commemorative prizes and the day was such a success that it will now be an annual event held alternately at each club.

All in all, Chevin has had a great year supported by all its members and staff. We look forward to the next 125 years knowing the Board are committed to helping members and visitors alike get the best possible golf and social experience the club has to offer.

St Enodoc Restructures Winter Green Fees to be More Appealing to Small Groups.

t Enodoc Golf Club (www.st-enodoc.co.uk), home to the highly-revered Church Course, has restructured the pricing for the forthcoming winter season in order to make golf over its championship layout more appealing to small groups with individual green fees starting from as low as £37.50 per person.

Available on weekdays from now until March 31st, 2020, 13 golfers or more will be charged £37.50 whilst golfers playing in a group of between 5 and 12 will pay £40 per green fee. A regular fourball group is priced at £170, costing each player £42.50, which is exactly half the price of a summer green fee.

This represents incredible value for a golf course that is regularly featured very high in the numerous rankings featuring golf courses in England, especially as golfers are never asked to play from temporary greens or tees in the dead of winter, even when many courses in the area may be either closed or restricted in use.

The Church Course at St Enodoc Golf Club, Cornwall, offers great golf all year round. Indeed thanks to the temperate climate in this part of Cornwall and the natural drainage delivered by the dunes on which the course is set means that the greenkeeping staff is able to maintain the course in great condition throughout the winter.

“adhere to the rules of the road”

fter reading that headline on the Web I felt quite sorry for the Welsh rally competition drivers.

I think all of us need to take heed of that warning after watching the F1 or a Rally because we have the propensity to become Lewis Hamilton, Elfyn Evans or Ott Tanak.

Having watched the drivers setting off for the Gwydir Forest Shakedown stage just outside Llanrwst I climbed back into my car and was immediately transformed into Seb

Ogier as I flew over the bridge, handbraked left onto the high street narrowly missing the lamp post on the right and pushing though a crowded street past the chippy and onto the long straight, quickly moving round the undertakers and through the puddle, wetting shoppers through. As I got out nobody bothered to interview me but the flashing blue light really hurt my eyes! If only life was so much fun.

However I was very impressed with the rally drivers as I watched them leave the Service area on Llandudno’s promenade and weave through the streets to the starting point where their cars were registered for the run down the main road to Penmachno for the next stage. We followed

one of the main competitors and enjoyed it as his engine growled and popped its way along behind a small car complete with Bert and Doris off on a little run at 45 mph out into the country. Goodness knows what they were thinking as they were sandwiched between the Rally Ford and Citroen breathing fire. It wasn’t their average run out. Like all good rally drivers the guys in the beasts stuck to the limits even though they probably wanted to floor it and flash past a few cars.

A true spectator sport Many sports work hard at keeping spectators away from the drivers and action, but rallying truly

encompasses the fan as we experienced watching the cars come in for service where we were able to mingle with the drivers as they started off to the next stage. Dads used their kids as an excuse to get a selfie with their favourite driver! Cars arriving back from each stage covered in mud with many bits missing were quickly repaired and transformed into pristine condition. The engines never sounded smooth but then why would they?

200kph (125mph). Getting this performance out of a 1600cc car is something to admire. Although they are based on standard road cars and are identifiable with the type of car that you buy in your local dealership, that is where the similarities stop because these WRC rally cars can go sideways at incredible speeds too!

Up around LLyn Brenig, with fans togged up to withstand the battering, the rain hammered down and visibility was pretty poor as Elfyn Evans, previous winner of the Wales Rally GB event, and part of

the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team, having had a poor Friday, forged his way through the stages with the Welsh crowd firmly on his side. Some even waved to him as he sped by but I’m not sure that he waved back! How rude!

I’m hoping that Wales retains this stage of the Rally Championship next season as it’s a true spectacle and worthy of a visit by all the family. If you missed it then I’m sure you can catch up as BT Sport had tremendous coverage with many hours of exciting footage.

My business is travel and development, my hobbies are fishing, photography and filming. Alaska combines all these perfectly. After numerous visits I accompanied my fishing friend and fellow adventurer Chris Tarrant to the stunning setting of Lake Clark in southwest Alaska. Our remote but quite luxurious accommodation, Silver Salmon Creek Lodge, could only be accessed by light aircraft using the beach as a landing strip. No roads here!

and David, Joanne and Oliver Coray run a very professional operation. About 30 years ago, when principally a fly fishing lodge, the Corays decided to live around some of the worlds largest bears, the Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear.

By treating them with respect and deciding that this was the bears territory, and humans were tolerated guests, a strange and unique situation developed. Guests and bears get along just great as long as certain protocols are adhered to. The lodge staff view this as the bears domain and we are their invited guests. They are never offered food and if we are fishing we always stop and move out to let the bears fish their way. Respect is the keyword. Young and adolescent bears tend to be the most inquisitive. It is critical that you never panic, turn your back or try to run from these bears as your guides will explain.

immediately agreed to join me on what was to be one of the most exciting of my Alaskan visits…

Coho, The Silver Salmon which although not so big, are still a tremendous sporting fish and late in the summer the rivers of Alaska are full of them.

The first afternoon we spent walking the fishery with Polaroid glasses and the first creature we saw was breathtaking, it was just enormous it was about ten foot in length with a really thick girth, and a massive back, it wasn’t the Coho to end all Cohoes… this was my first ever encounter with an Alaskan coastal brown bear.

It came wandering out of the woods and walked slowly along the riverbank, directly towards us. My guide, Eric

had said “Whatever you do, don’t run, just move back very quietly give him space and he will totally ignore you.”

Very difficult advice to follow, as I’m sure you’ll agree, my instinct was to run like hell or climb up the nearest tree and scream for my mummy but bears love climbing trees and can also run surprisingly fast (like 30 mph fast!) So, I had to resort to the “move back and give him space” technique.

To my relief and amazement it actually worked, and it kept on working throughout our incredible week.

We caught an enormous number of salmon, all bright silver, fresh from the sea, but we also got up close and personal with a lot of bears, in fact in the end I became far more interested in watching the bears than catching any more salmon.

We caught an enormous number of salmon, all bright silver, fresh from the sea feast on 5 or 6 salmon in a couple of hours, before we went back to an enormous breakfast ourselves. Sometimes a female seemed to leave cubs close to us while she went fishing, I couldn’t get my head around this behaviour at all.

But Martin explained that she felt safer leaving the cubs with us rather than risk a big male finding them unattended for the big males would undoubtedly kill and eat any cubs they found.

Some of the behaviour patterns were just fascinating to witness at such close quarters… we often had an adult bear within five feet of us and after the first day of sheer terror I became as relaxed with them as they were with us. It was magical.

It was a wonderful trip, one day Eric, our excellent young guide, Martin and I went up by canoe to the top of the river, where it flows out of a big lake, this was the main spawning area, and although the fish weren’t in the lake yet, they were pouring into the top pool just below it. We had tremendous sport catching Coho salmon after salmon, at the foot of the snowcapped mountains with three bald eagles soaring in the blue skies overhead... at one point a peregrine falcon flew so low over the river I could almost touch it with my rod. We paused several times to let big bears quietly make their right of way along the river in front of us. One huge bear came up to within a very few feet of where I was standing sniffed at me and moved slowly away.

Anyone with an interest in photography or just nature viewing will be amazed at just how varied and close to nature you can be. Experienced guides are always at your side and they have a deep interest and understanding of 62 www.countygolfer.co.uk

their surroundings. These hugely powerful bears at Silver Salmon Creek have a huge natural food supply and being omnivores feed on the lush sedge and grasses in spring and early summer before moving on to many types of berries. The vast shoals of food rich Pacific Salmon arrive midsummer and enable these well fed bears to fatten up for winter. At low tide some bears smell out and dig up razor clams which are a great delicacy to these bears. Humans in this part of Alaska therefore do not feature on their menu.

We are nothing more than a seagull or a rock to them. They are extremely intelligent and naturally inquisitive. It is therefore essential these bears do not associate us with food.

We give them space and it is the bear that decides how close it is comfortable to us. There are occasions when they are almost too comfortable and may take an interest in one’s camera bag etc. The guide will ask us to back up a few feet and may talk to the bear in a calm but firm voice. That is all it takes to ensure mutual respect.

It should be stressed that this is a unique location and experience. Inland bears are something totally different!!

With much less food and a taste for carrion (dead deer, caribou etc.) these inland brown bears often referred to as grizzly bears, should be viewed from a safe distance or around 300 yards, and one should always have a place of safety to reach quickly, vehicle, building etc. With the inland grizzly most things are on their menu!

In addition to the Coastal Brown Bear it is possible to view moose, bald eagle, sea otters, tufted puffins and very occasionally… wolves.

Whilst shorter trips are possible most guests stay for 4 to 7 nights at the lodge where the emphasis is on wildlife viewing and photography. The Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear is obviously the prime attraction and small groups are

always escorted by knowledgeable and highly experienced guides.

Anchorage itself has a great downtown area with shopping malls, museums, bars, restaurants and shops all within an easy walk of city hotels. Anchorage makes for a great hub to venture out and explore this beautiful part of Alaska.

Access: Virgin/Delta provide a great daily service from London to Anchorage via Seattle. Economy is excellent value and comfortable. Upper Class (first on Delta) superb. Service as you would expect from a Sir Richard Branson company is excellent throughout. Highly recommended and my preferred airline to Alaska.
