Welcome to the winter edition of County Golfer.

A

fter the Ryder Cup success, which spurred many on to play better golf, it’s time to face the winter. Many clubs are offering tempting deals on rounds, while others are trying to attract new members with some tasty membership fees.

We see people taking on a new challenge by moving to a new club at this time of year too. There seems to always be a bit of a shuffle round which is never a bad thing as it’s possible to get into a bit of a rut, and a new club can spur us on to playing better golf, or at least learn how to adapt to a new challenge.

Chatting to someone this summer who had moved, I was surprised to learn that the reason for the change was that the catering was better! I drove home trying to work that one through in my mind, thoughts like ‘chips over chipping then’ came to mind! I came to the conclusion that the social side must outweigh the golf. I could be wrong, but surely the course is why we are there. There’s ‘nowt so funny as folk’ as they say.

Anyway whatever floats your boat, please enjoy this issue of County Golfer and if you see us on your course please say hello.

Golf’s new Rules have been published by The R&A and the USGA ahead of coming into effect on 1 January 2019.

For the first time, a new Player’s Edition of the Rules of Golf is being introduced to provide a shorter, more user-friendly version of the Rules for golfers at all levels of the sport.

This version, which will serve as the primary publication for all golfers, features: • A more intuitive organisation with ten simplified topical groupings • A “Purpose of the Rule” description at the top of each Rule, to better define why the Rule exists • Easy-to-follow, full-colour diagrams and charts • A simpler, more direct writing style.

The Rules of Golf have existed for over 270 years. Consistently evolving the Rules is a central tenet of golf, but this current iteration is a significant and laudable change, one that aspires to make the game more inclusive, approachable and welcoming to all. Golfers of all abilities are universally passionate about the game. The significant changes outlined in this year’s Rules of Golf reflect and embrace that passion among all golfers who play, in every corner of the world.

Golf ’s greatest traditions will always reign, and the Rules will always evolve. Modernizing the Rules is integral to leading the game of golf into the future.

Here is a brief overview: • Search time - reduced from 5 minutes to 3 minutes • Ball moved during search - replace no penalty • Embedded ball - free relief anywhere through the course • Measuring a drop - use longest club (except putter) • Dropping - drop from knee height rather than shoulder • Taking stance on wrong green is not permitted • Ball unintentionally hits player or equipment - no penalty • Double hit - no penalty. olf through the winter brings many challenges with it, as we all still like to get rounds in weekly so that our game doesn’t suffer. We have had a great summer, with possibly the best conditions for golf for years, but each season brings with it something very new.

In this edition of County Golfer you will see many clubs offering winter packages to keep us up to speed. Some of the clubs in our counties are privileged to be on land

that drains, while others have to put things in place to protect their courses, such as mats to carry round, or they close a few holes, some even have to have periods of course closure, but do offer driving range facilities so that at some point we get to play.

The Pro shops gear themselves up with items of clothing to protect us from rain, hail, wind, snow and downright freezing cold conditions.

A warm golfer plays a much better game, so gear yourself up for a winter of golf.

Golf in idyllic surroundings

Wollaton Park Golf Club

T

here aren’t many golf clubs that you go to where you have to keep your eye out for rutting deer. However, it makes for a super atmosphere and an interesting and scenic round of golf. Lefty, as usual played the risk game in both senses.

Firstly, a couple of errant shots on two different holes led to him placing his ball within definite striking distance of the frisky stags. Obviously Lefty was not on the somewhat amorous stags list. Even funnier was that he scuffed one of his shots which took him no further away, but a lot closer to the stag. www.countygolfer.co.uk 11

Sadly, I played the most lethargic, if not pathetic, round of the year and yet strangely I thoroughly enjoyed playing this beautiful parkland course. One par in the whole round was all that I managed, and for the rest of the round I dodged pars with skilful aplomb and double bogeyed may more. Scorecards like mine need to be in close proximity of a shredder. Do stags eat paper I ask?

Before I talk about the round let’s discuss the club itself that was founded in 1927 when Tom Williamson designed the first course. Over the years sympathetic improvements have been carried out to make the course a challenge to both the new and experienced golfer.

We sat with General Manager and golf professional for 28 years, Steve Sayers, who enthused about his role and also the challenges that modern day golf faces.

We have seen, during the twenty years of producing County Golfer, courses that change on the whim of the current captain who may not quite like where a particular

bunker is placed. For example, if Lefty was made Captain of Wollaton, any hole that had a bunker down the left would have the bunker moved quickly. With that mindset in place, courses would change every year at great cost to members, stretching their much needed resources. We were quite encouraged then when Steve explained that since being formed as an Incorporated Company in 2015, such decisions at Wollaton Park Golf Club are made by a committee giving a total overview of the course to find what would benefit everyone.

Recent decisions, included inviting Ken Moody from Creative Golf Design to assess the course and provide advice on how best to improve it, has led to 5 bunker renovations including the Durabunker synthetic bunker edge construction system which ensures that the deer don’t ruin them.

Steve emphasized that Wollaton Park GC is, and always wants to be a bespoke, private members golf club, renowned for its

welcoming atmosphere and fantastic winter course. They are busy promoting their winter packages for visitors and societies, especially the afternoon availability. Membership is full at Wollaton which was nice to hear, so your chance to play here is as a visitor, and then you can always put your name down on the waiting list to join.

The big attraction at Wollaton is that as it’s an all year round course, everyday day is a play day which is great news for golfers whose course close when it gets a bit boggy, or if you hate having to carry a piece of carpet round with you!

The Golf We set off behind a fourball, in what can only be described as a high wind. The guy in front tried three times to tee off and kept being blown about. It was funny to watch but not so funny when it’s your turn. At 403 yards and stroke index 5, it’s a pretty straight hole and all of us got away okay with the wind playing a part in wafting the ball around. I managed to just skirt the bunker to the right and then chip onto the green, and there for 3. The green was nice to play and I came off with a bogey. This was maybe my best hole so I’ll tell you that now, so that you don’t expect a succession of birdies and eagles.

We waited as the fourball tee’d off at the second, two managing to go into the bunkers and one hitting the green. Where the other one went beats me however, I wasn’t in a position to boast as my first shot went about forty yards into the rough and under a pile of leaves. Well it is autumn, and the course is blessed with beautiful trees each with stories to tell. I managed to hit the green with my second, only to see it roll down the slope and off the back. A chip on and a double bogey was mine. This was looking bad. However, every cloud as they say….and Lefty lost his ball in the rough to the right. My driving on the first eight holes was doing okay, and I got good distance even though I have

abandoned my driver in favour of a three iron, keeping me within reasonable distance of the other players.

Brian and Lefty were slogging it out on the third, and both got to within a par ,but bogeys were their only reward. We were fighting against the wind and it went right through my jacket.

The sun kept peeping through and the autumn colours showed off the glorious park around us. The course covers about forty percent of Wollaton Park, and the relationship between Wollaton Hall and the Golf Club has never been better.

The stroke index one 425 yard fifth wasn’t as hard as I expected however, landing under some leaves didn’t help my cause, but there’s one thing about a strong wind, they blew away just as I got to my ball.

Wonderful. But still I made no dent into the double bogey run. Oh, I did get a six at the par 5 fourth, albeit with a stroke of fortune as the ball following a delicious chip, sneaked in between the two bunkers. The bunkers are all in great condition albeit with the deer playing a part in trying to mess them up.

I’ll move to the eighth hole which was what kept me going for the rest of the round. I hit a beautiful tee shot that soared high and looked 'green bound' until the wind caught it and it dropped just on the slope at the edge of the green. A beautiful chip and an eight feet put and the birdie was mine. The others only get bogies. Pah! I came back down to earth on the ninth and carded eight. I suddenly started to struggle off the tee between holes nine to fifteen.

bunkers worked on, and I just managed to get close enough to the green just left of the railings and so I chipped onto the green after taking a drop out of the GUR. However, I had peaked far too early with my birdie. We were all enjoying the greens which are straight and true. The first nine seemed faster than the back nine, and we got caught out on the tenth with it, but soon adapted.

We now started to experience the ‘stag” effect. Lefty was in his element but we were far more wary.

The wind had dropped, the sun was out, and the experience just got even better as we made our way up the fourteenth, a hole which to me at 414 yards was harder than it looked from the tee. Lefty said ‘why are you leaning backwards after you’ve tee’d off?

“My question was “why didn’t you tell me earlier?” The answer is pretty obvious though isn’t it. Why would you help the opposition?

That would be like a goalkeeper telling a striker taking the penalty how to score past him. Competitive this game, isn’t it.

I was feeling at this moment that the course favours the big hitter as some of the par 4’s are quite long. I think over the eighteen holes I must lose a good four shots in this way. That’s not an excuse, because I’d be the same if I was playing Tiger Woods or possibly a lot worse!

Well after that I was ready for a hot pie but as the kitchen was being worked on, it was down to the pub this time. Brian and I called into the Pro shop to say our thanks to Club professional Martin Browne, who had made us most welcome, and equipped us with

drinks, chocolate and balls. Lefty was quickly packing the clubs in the car, rushing to get his pint.

I have to say that anyone who enjoys golf in a parkland setting, with an all year-round course, playing on superb greens, well then it’s time you gave Wollaton Park Golf Club a try. A Tale of

Two Courses at

Worksop Golf Club

I

t's that dreaded time of year where Golf Clubs go into winter mode, which usually means winter tees requiring you to carry a hammer in your bag to drive your tees into the winter matt, also those lovely greens you use to play on are now out of bounds, and instead you find yourself putting on the fairway into a hole the size of a family size KFC Bucket!

So where can I recommend you to go to play a decent round of golf that doesn't become second rate when winter strikes? The answer is Worksop Golf Club.

Worksop have now moved onto their ‘winter course’ and I can assure you this is by no means a second rate, downgraded alternative to the summer one, rather, holes like the 4th and 7th play completely differently from the summer ones.

The biggest of these changes comes on the par 5 9th, on the summer course it’s just a straight shot off the tee down the fairway, off the winter tee however, it turns into a big dog leg left, needing an accurate tee shot to avoid the tree lined approach to the fairway. Over driving is a big problem

now, something you’d never worry about on the summer set up. For me this tee position was a lot better than the summer one and improved the hole.

The course, like many courses in the area, is under-going a ‘tree management improvement programme’ in cooperation with the Sherwood Forest Trust. Rouge trees have found their way onto the course over the years that were not part of the original design, you can see the effect of this especially on the 4th, where a big group of trees use to cling to the left of

the fairway catching many golf balls, now these have been thinned out, thus giving you a chance to find your ball if you go off line and not completely ruin your card. The added advantage is that it speeds up play as you spend less time looking for your ball.

Something that will no doubt please the members greatly.

As mentioned in the intro, how many times have you had to try and hammer a tee into a winter matt? You will be pleased to know that Worksop has invested heavily into new winter tees that still give the feel of putting

your tee into grass. They’re so good in fact that for the par 3s, Newby preferred to play without a tee, as the mat allowed you to get under the ball.

Alongside this huge investment in the course to ensure it plays superbly through winter, Worksop have also gone all out to improving the club house too. The old windows have been taken out in the dining room and replaced with modern Bi-Fold doors, along with an new outside seating area giving a great view of the 18th green.

The Locker rooms for the men and women have undergone a massive refurbishment too, with modern toilets and shower cubicles recently installed. So far over ÂŁ250k has been spent on the club house, with further six figure investment approved, to carry on the refurbishment of the club house throughout 2019. Worksop are not sitting still, they are moving with the times.

Back on the course, Newby and myself were having a great time even though some of the shots were a little wayward to say the least (check out our Facebook page for a live video of Newby on the 8th, I don't think it hit the green!!).

in over the past 5 years is really showing; improvements to the bunkers, removal of rouge trees, new tees, it’s all coming together nicely! There’s no wonder the members we met had huge smiles on their faces, and wanted to stop and chat to us about how much better it is, they certainly have a lot of pride in their course.

The lay out of the course has to be applauded, usually I have a good old

moan that “a course is a right handers course”, but Worksop have it just right, a balance of holes that favours neither a Lefty or Righty.

Holes to look out for: The 9th 488 yard par 5, off the winter tee this hole offers a real challenge, tree lined tee shot, dog-leg left.

Hole 14a that only gets played during winter really is a little gem of a par 3 as well.

I've decided that Worksop has two courses, the summer course and the winter course and neither is a poor relation to the other. If you’ve ever played Worksop in the summer, come back and play the winter course, you will not be disappointed.

A big thank you has to go to Alan Mansbridge, the Secretary/Manager, who brought us two of the best bacon cobs whilst we were out on the course, and coffee to keep us warm too. Don't expect this kind of service when you play, although I hear it can be arranged with Alan for a small cash fee and prices will vary depending on his mood!!

Winter Probably days18 like this are a distant memory of a summer that gave us so many golfing delights weather wise. Courses got pretty dry and the grass got scorched but we didn’t mind as we got the most beautiful warm sunny days for many a year.

Remember days like this?

At 8 am one crystal clear sunny morning in September the temptation to nip out for a round got the better of us, and so a quick text around resulted in us teeing off at Alfreton Golf Club for an early morning nine hole treat. With only a two ball ahead and no one

following us we enjoyed a most blissful round.

Alfreton offers a challenge to all golfers, tight in some areas and open in others, bringing into play the clever thinking process of club choice which I still have to admit that I’m not the best at. I tee’d off at the first hole

It took a genius shot to get to the green from here!

really well if a little left but then picked the wrong club out, and drove to the back of the green leaving me to chip back on and watch, as the ball agonisingly rolled down the sloping green, leaving me a wicked uphill put just to ensure a par. Lo and behold I did it, one up to me. Having the fine privilege of teeing off at the second, I placed my ball beautifully on the first fairway, making a shot over the road and through the trees particularly tricky. A fluky second saw me hit the

trees but come out through, leaving a pitching wedge onto the green and in for another Par. This was getting embarrassingly good. It didn’t last as I messed up holes 3,4,5 big style, leaving the rest to play some great golf onto the 4th green. Two got their ball firmly on and two of us fell way short in the rough with tricky chips up and on.

The 5th gives great opportunity for a big drive.

I always get the green wrong here, as I seem to think it’s in a different place. Why I will never know. Once that’s done it’s down the hill to a particularly tricky par 3. Too much club and it’s the woods for you in Leafy Hollow, too little and you fall woefully short. Again club choice is important, even a pitching wedge but I favour a 7 with gentle swing.

Getting firmly under the ball at the 7th is vital as the steep slope needs clearing to give a great approach to the green. I have been known to go into the field on the left with a few wild shots, mostly down to not watching the position of my feet. A rookie error I know but sometimes when playing with others, chatting can take away your concentration.

I always remember this hole as the one, when playing with a friend and business associate (Kerry Robinson) many years ago, the ball exploded as soon as I hit it. A simple trick which amused them greatly as I reeled away in horror. Ah well, at least it cheered us up.

Dress down Friday on the greens?

The sun was rising rapidly now and the warmth on our backs was massaging us gently. Getting over the bridge is my challenge at the ninth. I did it but a little too far right leaving a strange shot to the green and I strayed left again leaving a chip on but resulting in a bogey. .

So, after a cracking start, so full of potential I came away having thoroughly enjoyed our short time out but totally frustrated that I couldn’t hold it together for the other seven holes. As there are eleven holes here there is the opportunity to extend your round and play a full 18.

If you are a long hitter just watch out at the eighth for the bunker on the right. I’ve never been in there as I’m always short and have to play an extra shot. You see that’s where I go wrong, I’m always half a shot behind the rest .

I have a full season to re-cap on but I think it’s only right to start at the end....I am writing this two days after returning from the Ryder Cup in Paris. It is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The atmosphere was just unbelievable; the European players were fantastic with the crowd and I currently can’t talk from all the singing!!

On day 1 we spent the first few hours behind the first tee, and all I can say is wow.....it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. The night before in a Paris wine bar we put some lyrics to a famous football song ‘Allez, Allez’, admittedly I was under the influence of a few glasses of red. The song ended up like this We wear the blue of Europe, And we will never stop.

With Tommy Bjorne our captain, We will win the Ryder Cup. Seve is our hero, And Poulter is our boy.

And no one hits it further, Than Rory Mclroy.

Allez, Allez, Allez, (and make sure you bounce at this point).

It started with four of us singing but we soon had over 3000 people on the first tee singing our song! Unreal. The picture on page 42, of the 1st tee is just amazing. It’s one I’ll definitely be having in my man cave… and gents don’t get jealous… I do have a man cave!

I have to say we didn’t see loads of golf but what we did see was fantastic.... I think I saw Poulter hit about 10 putts from 15ft and in, and he only missed one. Probably the best putting display I’ve ever seen. Another highlight of the week was meeting Nick Faldo; I grew up with him as my hero, and although I tried to model my swing on his, I didn’t do a great job.

The golf course was set up very well and suited the European players. The fairways were so tight, and one thing Bjorn did was

to move the ropes quite far away from the fairways, meaning the crowd couldn’t stop it going in the rough. This is something you see in the US, a player hits in the crowd and they end up having a great lie.

I said in my article at the beginning of the year, I was going to live life to the full after losing my sister Janine. The weekend in Paris definitely created a life long memory. I smiled from start to finish and this picture sums up how I felt, and we clinked a few glasses in memory of Janine.

Playing season

This year has probably been the most enjoyable for years, along with being very successful. With the season starting with wet fairways everywhere to mid-way through, having the hardest and driest summer I’ve ever seen, it has definitely given me a test.

Here are a few highlights of my season;

Championships at Wentworth, and the top 3 qualify for the GB & IPGA Cup team. I have played both these events, but would love to have another chance to play, especially the PGA cup, having lost by half a point to the USA team in 2007. I will do my best to get my game in shape, and we will roll the dice and see what happens.

One of the things I have introduced this year has been CrossFit. I have tried almost everything when it comes to fitness, but now nearly a year into it, I really love it. It challenges me every time I go in, which is normally 2-3 times a week. A year ago, I couldn’t squat to save my life, however I am progressing in the right direction.

I won quite a few more Pro ams throughout the year; I would probably say the most rewarding event I mentioned above was the 2nd in the Midland PGA Championship.

I went into the last event 5th in the order of merit, knowing I probably needed a top 3 finish to push into the top 3 in the order of merit... in very very strong winds I produced a good display of ball control to shoot 2 under par. The afternoon was cancelled due to the course being unsafe, and a tied 2nd finish moved me to third in the order of merit and booked me a place in the end of season PGA playoffs.

EMGA has grown this summer, going from four professionals, to six. At the beginning of September we welcomed Natalie Clarke to the team, who brings a wealth of experience from previous roles. Many of her clients have come across and the popular Prosecco nights will be launched at Morley Hayes very soon.

Will Painter, recently passed his year one PGA exams and has joined the coaching team to work alongside us all. He has been pivotal in growing and delivering our members nights, which have gone from strength to strength.

To help keep your game in shape this winter...

here are a few tips to help you improve: 1.Lower your expectations, golf courses will play longer, Greens won’t run as true and fast.

Make sure you enjoy your golf and don’t beat yourself up if you miss the odd short putt.

1.If you don’t get chance to play much because of the weather, get yourself down to the driving range at Morley Hayes. I would encourage you all to use a variety of clubs, you could even play your home course on the range. I carry about 10 course planners in my golf bag to help me keep my practice varied.

1.Club up, the majority of us miss greens short, even in the summer, so this winter try and take a club that could get you to the back of the green, and I would expect to find you in the middle of the green more often.

1.Book a lesson. If you are someone that never has lessons, but struggles around their handicap, go and see your local PGA Pro and get a plan together this winter.

Morley Hayes

We’re over a year into the membership at Morley Hayes and it is really building momentum, there are a lot more members with active handicaps and the competitions in 2019 will be bigger and better. The changes to the driving range have been well received and a lot of people are using the cafe either before or after lessons or just practicing.

Please remember this winter, Morley Hayes will not be on temporary tees or winter greens.

You won’t be required to use a mat on the fairways, it will be a full-length course for 12 months of the year. I totally understand why some golf clubs protect their courses but the tees and fairways this summer at Morley Hayes were in just as good a condition as local courses that use mats for 4 months through the winter.

I always look forward to the winter season at Morley Hayes, driving in with all the lights on makes it a really special place to work. I really hope I see a few of you down at Morley Hayes this winter, if we haven’t met before please come and introduce yourself.

Anger Management!

Each year our involvement in the Morley Hayes Golf Day brings with it both moments of joy and of frustration. This years competition was fought out on a gloriously sunny day and was won by

We, here at County Golfer, were a few points short much to the dismay of our team captain Spence who handed our card in with little relish. Before handing it in however he took a picture of it to send to his wife just to show her the scores. It wasn’t pride that made him do it, just total frustration. He sent one to Newby too with the message “just look at Lefty’s points”.

Who says irony is dead?

It didn’t start too well with new playing partner Mike who seemed to think he played off 18 although he hadn’t picked up a club for twelve years! So, only playing with a three quarter handicap didn’t give us much of a chance to get big points.

As it turned out though, once he’d got his eye in, he really played well and picked up good points with he and Spence carrying the team, albeit with a few dirty looks from Spence each time Mike picked his ball up on the green. “Why did you pick up?” said Spence, “that was for a point”. After about four times you could see Spence realized that we weren’t going to win this, but in true style he fought on with his game as we trailed along behind.

The best part about playing in this competition is that it’s played in such a

good spirit among golfers who aren’t at the top of the profession and can’t really add up. I think basically it’s a case of ‘enjoy the day’ with plenty of chatting even if we do forget how many shots we’ve taken. Sadly Spence knew exactly how many shots we had all had and there was no deviation on the score. He’s a hard taskmaster and drove us on to a creditable 6th place. It is always comforting to know that the card handed in is an accurate one and that you’re truly in the position you should be. Isn’t it?

After a shower and enjoying the superb food and wine laid on by the Allsops he slowly mellowed… or so we thought. He called into the office two weeks ago and he just couldn’t resist mentioning it. It’s a good job we are all friends.

Once again the competition was held on a beautiful sunny day and the course was in excellent condition. The greens were especially good ,being pretty quick and true. We started the shotgun round on the 9th hole and from there on we didn’t have anyone following us too closely and so we could just enjoy our golf. Lefty nearly won ‘beat the pro to nearest the pin’ competition but his ball wasn’t quite on the

green. Well there’s always next year when we will be hoping that “Angry” Spence will lead us to a new level of mediocrity!

The after dinner speeches were as usual full of laughs but especially good was the applause to say thank you to Andrew and Robert Allsop because they really deserve it. Hospitality doesn’t come much better than this. Long may it last.

Data, Data, Data.

olf players and fans alike have always had an affinity for data, you can look up your favourite golfer to see how many times he or she hits the fairway, their number of tournament wins, their longest drive, the list is endless, and these days your top golfer will get themselves wired up to the latest system to see how he can improve his game.

Does this technology translate to your average golfer who just wants to knock a few shots off his round? Well Aaron Holtom, the senior instructor at EMGA based at Morley Hayes, invited yours truly (Lefty) down for a golf lesson using the latest teaching tool ‘BULL 3D motion capture system’.

To start with, Aaron had me stand on a pressure mat then just start hitting a few balls with my six iron. Now, like most of you reading this, sometimes you hit a shot and it’s a beauty, it sails majestically through the air but then you play your next shot with the same club and you scuff it. Inconsistency really costs you on the golf course and I was doing just this - striking it so well, then the next shot I scuffed. The question is ‘why?’

While I stood on the mat hitting my shots, Aaron had one eye on me, and the other on his laptop screen. “Okay” he said, “Let’s get you hooked up to the 3D system”. This only took a few minutes to set up as you wear a strap around your waist with a sensor on it, and one on your back. Aaron then with a click of a pen mapped out my shoulders, hips and neck, another sensor went on my club then I was ready to go. “Right” he said, “hit a few more balls for me”, so off I went again, sometimes I hit it sweet as a nut, then other times scuffed across the ground. I think the main frustration for me is that I don’t know what I’m doing wrong so the 3D mapping technology came into its own, with Aarons skill as a pro and the new data, he could see in real time why I was so inconsistent.

Aaron showed me the results he was getting from the pressure mat which clearly showed that at the point of contact with the ball, all my weight was on my back foot. If we were playing cricket that would be a good shot

to the boundary, but in golf it meant I was always going to hit the top of the ball. All my swings never hit the sweet spot on the club face which makes the ball go up and further, and when I thought I was hitting a good shot I was still topping the ball. He then showed me a video of a tour player where on impact all their weight is thrown onto the front foot, this naturally makes you get under the ball. Looking at the 3D data, which was basically me in skeleton form, he showed me how the top half of my body leans back on point of impact.

This imagery really helps you appreciate why a shot is bad, it’s like a Eureka! moment.

With all this data on hand, Aaron had me back on the pressure mat and hooked up to the 3D mapping machine which this time would beep if I was in the correct position of impact. This really helped because you could swing in slow motion and get your body in the right position to active the beep needed by hitting the right point on the ball. For me the correction was to lean forward putting pressure on my front foot.

The first few times felt so strange I could feel muscles pulling that had not been used for a long time, but eventually I got it, I was getting under the ball, and at the point of impact I was hitting the sweet spot on the club face.

Aaron did now point out that I would now have to rethink my club choice as I was hitting the ball further. The next day I took my new swing on to the golf course at Wollaton Park where I kept smashing my 9 iron over the back of the green whereas before it was my ‘go to’ club to get on it. The real bonus of this technology is that if I make a duff shot I know why, so by the time I hit it again I can correct myself.

If you are looking to strike the ball more consistently, and improve your game by reducing your shots and so your score, then get yourself booked in. Aaron won’t weigh you down with too many stats or confuse you with data, but he will help you to see where you can improve, and then show you how to do it.

Over the past 18 months Craig Pollard and I have done some great work, helping to get more people active through introductory sessions to golf. Specifically over the last two months, we have worked together delivering the sessions at South Chesterfield Golf Club, which have proved to be a great success.

We have both worked on the North East Derbyshire Community Golf projects run by the Derbyshire Golf Development Group supported by Sport England’s Small Grants programme. The funding from Sport England has enabled us to take golf into the community and engage with differing age groups from different walks of life.

To date the project has seen 340 people be introduced to golf on 6 week coaching programmes. 163 (48%) were female and 177 (52%) were male ranging from as young as 14 through new golfers in their 70’s. Our research showed us through participant feedback: 97% said the coaching was very good or exceeded their expectations.

24% had undertaken further coaching.

75% have subsequently used a Driving Range.

43% have subsequently played golf on a golf course.

100% said they would be interested in further coaching.

100% said they would be interested in playing more golf.

46% said they would like to join a golf club.

38% said may be they will join a golf club.

This feedback demonstrates there is a market for projects like this to help grow the game of golf. Future investment in these types of activities can only be good for the health of the game, as golf clubs are currently experiencing difficult times with falling memberships. It has been an absolute pleasure to work on all of the projects and witness after only a few sessions, the fantastic progress that individuals have made. Seeing them out on the golf course playing some holes and the support and camaraderie between the members of the various groups has been incredibly satisfying and rewarding to see as a coach. Projects like this are undoubtedly so worthwhile, providing a stepping stone into golf that some golfers might ordinarily never have taken. Giving individuals the opportunity to try the sport and more importantly sustain their interest is crucial if we are to continue to grow and promote the game of golf.

Nigel Furniss, Development Officer for Derbyshire Golf commented: “The project has been a fantastic success and we can’t thank Sport England enough for their generous support. This project has had a real impact on people’s lives, getting many elderly people active again through golf. We have been able to take golf into the community and attract new participants to what is a great

game providing many health and social well being benefits. We are helping these people to sustain their interest in the game and hopefully they will become regular participants and possibly join a local golf club.”

Some feedback from some of the participants: “Finding this session was just what I needed. Fame and Craig were very welcoming, the group was a reasonable size, mixed age group and everyone was really friendly. I was a bit nervous to start with but Fame and Craig’s encouragement and personal tuition was the boost I needed. The team games were fun and got the group to mix more and was a great way for us to encourage and support each other.” Wilma Spinks.

The ladies and junior group coaching at Barlborough has continued to grow over the past few months, attracting new faces from both in and out of the county. The format of the coaching, coffee and cake morning which runs every Thursday 10:00-12:00 and is for ladies of any ability, has changed slightly over the last few weeks and is still proving to be extremely popular. The ladies have the opportunity to come for an hour of coaching 10:00-11:00, where we work on a different topic each week. Some weeks I select the area that is going to be worked on, depending on where I feel improvements could be made, and other weeks the ladies choose collectively as a group an area of their game/topic that they would like to work on, giving them ownership of the session, which I think is hugely important. The ladies then have the option to go out and play two or three holes in the time they have remaining, before coming back in for coffee and cake, or they can play the full nine holes if they do not want refreshments.

The social element to the Thursday morning coaching is hugely important and I find myself saying this a lot, “that it is more than just golf”.

We have created a social community at the club, where the ladies are able to practice, play and learn their golf in a fun, relaxed, comfortable environment with like-minded ladies. There are no participation barriers and equipment can be provided. We have formed a Watts App group where ladies can chat, arrange golf and ask me any questions they have regarding their golf and coaching.

They are such a lovely, fun group to coach and there are always new faces attending the session every week… everyone is always made to feel very welcome by the staff at the club, the other ladies and myself. In addition to the Thursday morning ladies group, I run ladies structured coaching sessions on a 52 www.countygolfer.co.uk

Tuesday evening for an hour. To attend these sessions, ladies have to pre-book their place.

The junior sessions still take place on a Saturday: Girls only 09:30-10:30 and the mixed session 11:00-12:00.

I would like to add at this stage, that I don’t solely teach ladies and juniors…..I DO TEACH MEN too!

On a more personal note, this is the first year since having my right shoulder replaced in May 2017 I have been able to start playing more golf without pain, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have played more social golf and a little bit of club at Chesterfield Golf Club, Walton where I am a lifetime honorary member, plus a little bit of competitive golf, which has been an enjoyable test. This has been down to medical advancements in surgery and a lot of hard work with Phil Goulding at S40 Personal Training with a weekly structured strength and conditioning programme.

Without Phil’s knowledge and expertise, I know I wouldn’t be capable of the mobility and strength that I now have which has undoubtedly helped me with my golf.

On a golf related fitness and coaching note, earlier this year I became TPI and BodiTrak certified, learning how the body’s strengths and weaknesses affect the golf swing.

Identifying any physical restrictions that may be limiting a player’s swing and simple techniques to improve these limitations. Plus learning about the relationship between a player’s feet and their interaction with the ground, which I feel is of up most importance.

This is something that Andy Carnall and myself may be exploring further at Barlborough Links Golf Course over the winter months….

Rams Stars Carry Out the Official Opening of Morley Hayes’ New Driving Range and Tower Café Golf enthusiasts and friends of Morley Hayes turned out in force to see Derby County stars Jack Marriott and Martyn Waghorn carry out the official opening of the new driving range and Tower Café at the facility on Main Road in Morley.

The event marked the completion of extensive renovation works to expand the golf provision at Morley Hayes, which includes a 17 bay, all-weather floodlit driving range.

The expansion has also seen the creation of better disabled access and 18 more parking spaces.

Alongside the driving range is the new Tower Café, which serves hot and cold drinks and a selection of snacks, cakes and light bites.

There is a new comfortable lounge area where golfers can relax after a session on the range. The café is also open to business customers and includes power sockets on each table and free wi-fi.

A new retail area showcases a range of golf clothing, accessories and golf balls from leading golf brands such as Under Armour, Footjoy and Titleist.

already top-class golf facilities available at Morley Hayes, which include a championship length 18-hole Manor course, 9-hole Tower course, golf pavilion and the highly-respected East Midlands Golf Academy.

After the event, Jack and Martyn signed autographs and posed for photos, before heading out on the driving range and trying their hand at hitting one of the new illuminated signs, another new addition for golfers.

itleist celebrated an incredible milestone for the Pro V1 golf ball at the Nedbank Golf Challenge this weekend, notching up its 3,000th win since the launch of the franchise in 2000 at the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas.

This historic week for the Titleist family came in Sun City, South Africa, as Pro V1x loyalist Lee Westwood returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since 2014. The victory marked Westwood's 24th career win on the European Tour and his 43rd worldwide, all of which have come with the #1 ball in golf.

Since 2000, the #1 ball in golf has led the way as the most trusted golf ball on the worldwide tours. The performance and consistency of both the Pro V1 and Pro V1x has seen professional golfers across the world place their trust in a Titleist golf ball, when teeing it up on golf’s biggest stages.

This latest milestone comes in a year which has also seen Titleist dominate all the men’s Majors. The year culminated at the PGA Championship, with the winner in August using a Pro V1x golf ball, which signalled a run of seven consecutive Majors won with a Titleist golf ball, and a run stretching back to the US Open in 2017.

Shortly after Westwood’s victory in South Africa, it was a 1-2 finish for players relying upon the new Titleist prototype golf balls at the Mitsui VISA Taiheiyo Masters. When I mentioned to someone that I was going to meet John and Ben Stevenson owners of Stevenson’s Jewellers in Chesterfield their immediate reaction was ”Ah, a real jeweller”. That’s a fine accolade to have in business, one of being at the top of your profession and being well respected as such.

A Reputation Built on Experience

F

inding out the story behind the Stevenson’s name was a real eye opener for me. There are ‘jewellers’, and there are ‘jewellers of distinction’ which when you mention names like Rolex, Cartier and Omega take your mind on a new route, and then it takes another turn when you add ‘bespoke jeweller’ either new or remodelled.

Where on earth do I start? As I walked up Glumangate I saw two gentlemen talking in the doorway of Stevensons, one of whom turned out to be John Stevenson. He seemed to know everyone who passed and that was true for most of the time I was there, with people calling in to collect this, buy that, drop something off. John was so welcoming and friendly and put me at ease in a huge industry that I really don’t know a lot about other than recognising the large branded companies by name that I mentioned earlier John introduced me to his son Ben who was just as friendly and I could see why they have built such a prestigious reputation over the years. John’s experience covers a staggering fifty nine years in the jewellery industry, originally as a sales representative, which gave him a great insider’s advantage when he then opened his own shop. From that time on Stevenson Jewellers have forged a fine reputation as diamond merchants and their name is synonymous with quality and personal service.

Ben, who used to come into the shop from being just 12 years old, explained that their three areas of business are, new jewellery sales, repairs and the purchase and sale of pre-owned Rolex . But, within those categories lies so much. For instance sourcing stones for bespoke items takes Ben all over the world.

“When I see a stone, whether it’s a Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald or Diamond” Ben says “I can immediately visualise the best way of using it and the piece that I can create”. This kind of vision can only come with experience, but then Ben has spent over twenty years in Bond Street London. If they see the right stone, then they buy it, knowing just what cut and what setting to use it in, and within a short time you will find their latest, original creation in the shop.

And he’s right!

“What about the Pre-owned Rolex and Omega side of the business?” I asked. Basically, if you want a new or pre-owned Rolex you just ask Ben and he will scour the globe for you, however rare the edition. “But”, says Ben, “That’s just the beginning.

Once the item is found, where ever it is in the world, you then have to allow for the exchange rate whether it’s Euro, Dollar or something more

obscure. That rate can be critical to getting the right price for our clients”.

John and Ben monitor the foreign exchange market constantly and then strike when the rate is best.

Like I said earlier there’s such a lot more to learn about how people operate their businesses to give us the best possible service.

John and Ben are very product led.

They are passionate about what they do and that shines through. I witnessed people coming into the shop and they were so patient with them. There’s no pressure to buy.

Even when they showed someone the box that a certain necklace came in, they were enthusiastic about it.

Presentation means so much to them whether it’s the goods or how they are boxed, wrapped and displayed.

Getting it right for their customers is of paramount importance.

Stevenson’s shop isn’t huge but it just oozes quality and service. John and Ben focus on giving each customer the dignity of personal service and you don’t need 1,000’s of square feet to do that, you just need that certain something that gives you the edge and I’d have to say that I, amongst many others found it here at this family owned Jewellers of Distinction.
