Welcome!

By now you’ve noticed something new and exciting in your mailbox!

You’re probably wondering what we’re all about and why we’re reaching out to you.

The reason is simple: ImagesAZ is your magazine. We are about you and your community.

For 12 years, ImagesAZ magazine has been presenting North Valley residents with news and features about their own neighborhoods, from arts and humanities to feel-good stories about their neighbors and friends. We love what we do, and we are proud to share the positive and uplifting highlights of our beautiful home state and local communities.

Our print and online versions have become an inspiring source of information, from service to smiles.

As Arizona celebrates its Centennial this month, we are celebrating our own growth. This month, we are launching a second version of our acclaimed ImagesAZ magazine just for you. We want to share the local personalities, events, history and special facets unique to the North Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek area in a version separate from our Tramonto, Anthem, Desert Hills and New River magazine.

Likewise, we want to hear from you! What is important to you? Who are your local heroes? We can help you spread the word about your favorite causes, events and people! You are always welcome to pick up the phone and call us or send us an email with your comments and suggestions.

In the case of the Nacarios, that courage came in the form of a gastronomical dare

Paul was born in the Philippines and was six months old when his family moved to San Francisco. He is well versed in Jesuit education, having attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory and then on to the University of San Francisco. He has been in the financial service industry since 1990. Paul currently works for Charles Schwab Advisor Services in business development.

Paul made a work-related move to Arizona from San Francisco in 1991, however, because he is an avid golfer and hates the fog, it seems that the move was just as much for pleasure!

Kathy was born in Terre Haute, Indiana and attended Ball State University. She moved from Indiana to Arizona a few years after her family made the move to Scottsdale. “The weather made my decision to move very easy,” Kathy shares. From 2003 to 2008, Kathy was a stay-at-home mom, easily the toughest job she has ever done, albeit the most rewarding.

She is currently the Assistant Director and a Montessori Teacher at Quality Interactive Montessori in Cave Creek, Arizona. “When we starting looking for a pre-school for Brandon, he was two and a half and we got really lucky; we found Quality Interactive Montessori and immediately fell in love with the school. The school is in a country-like setting that was immediately welcoming.

We knew it was a nurturing place for our son right away. It was one of the best decisions we made! When I decided I wanted to re-enter the workforce, I really wanted a career change. Pam Schiele, the Director and owner of the school, approached me about a teaching position.” In order to teach, Kathy was required to become Montessori-certified, so the Nacarios spent the summer of 2008 in Las Vegas to begin her certification process.

Their son, Brandon, is eight years old and in second grade at El Dorado Private School. He has many hobbies, including playing basketball, flag football, golfing and skiing. In fact, the family makes it a point to go skiing during every spring break. They love vacationing in Telluride, Breckebridge and Purgatory. Their most recent trip found them in Durango for skiing the snow-covered peaks between Christmas and New Year’s at Purgatory.

Mom says Brandon looked “bright and fabulous” in his new Loudmouth Ski Pants with the Captain Thunderbolt design that he received from Santa this year!

Skiing is, by far, not the Nacarios’ only athletic pursuit.

Brandon plays basketball all year long in two different leagues, and he plays flag football all year long as well. Paul coaches both sports, so most of the family’s recreational time is spent on practices and games. A typical Saturday includes two, sometimes three games.

Paul says, “We have balls, golf clubs and all sorts of athletic equipment throughout the house. Fortunately, we haven’t broken anything yet.”

Brandon played his first soccer game when he was five years old, and it was truly a memorable one! Mom, Kathy, remembers, “The soccer ball came right to Brandon, pretty much at eyelevel. Instead of using his head to ‘head’ the ball, he simply punched the ball with his fist! It was understandable that he didn’t use his head, and very funny seeing him punch the ball!”

In line with the Nacarios’ athletic endeavors, they plan on starting a youth basketball league in partnership with PrimeTime Athletics. According to the Nacarios, PrimeTime is currently the leader in Arizona youth flag football, and they are looking forward to the new addition of youth basketball.

Two very loved, furry members round out the Nacario family: Nina, an Apricot Toy Poodle who is three years old, and Cedric, a rescue dog from VJ Ranch animal rescue in New River, who is two years old. In fact, the Nacario Family is a great supporter of dog rescue shelters – it is a cause very close to their hearts. Other causes that the Nacarios support include Breast Cancer Research and foster homes for children.

The Nacarios strive to live by the motto, “Always be respectful to others, no matter what.”

They work to pass on this philosophy to their son Brandon. Kathy shares, “Our greatest pleasure in life is when someone tells us that we have an extremely polite child – nothing is more rewarding!”

Neighbors might spot the Nacarios around town at some of their favorite places, Local Bistro, Pure Sushi, Bryan’s BBQ, Spotted Donkey, Flapjacks, and Brandon’s favorite, Rubio’s. They can’t wait to see what 2012 brings their way, and they wish their friends and neighbors the best in the year ahead!

CCUSD Preschools Earn Accreditation

Early childhood programs at three Cave Creek Unified School District preschools have earned NAC accreditation for the next three years for their high standards in care and education of the area’s young children.

Desert Sun Academy, Horseshoe Trails Elementary and Cactus Shadows East received accreditation awards for their programs based on their promotion of preschoolers’ individual growth and development, as well as professional training opportunities for staff. Each program also demonstrated that it exceeds minimum state licensing requirements for child care programs.

All parents, staff members and administrators for Desert Sun, Horseshoe Trails and Cactus Shadows Child’s Play Learning Center preschools are to be congratulated for achieving this level of excellence.

“Authors’ Month” at Cave Creek Museum

Cave Creek Museum’s popular “Authors’ Month” returns in February! The museum, located at 6140 Skyline Drive, Cave Creek, has lined up an exciting roster of renowned and local authors to speak each Saturday in February. Free presentations take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the museum’s historic church, followed by a “meet and greet,” book signing and refreshments inside the museum until 3:30 p.m.

The Body Lab

February 3-19 In the Devil’s Frying Pan

In honor of Arizona’s Centennial celebration, Desert Foothills Theater (DFT), a program of the Foothills Community Foundation, is presenting a new form of theater through an original play, “In the Devil’s Frying Pan,” which tells the story of the founding of Arizona through first-person accounts of life in the Territory prior to 1912. This theatrical event premieres Feb. 3 and runs through Feb. 19 at Stagecoach Village, 7100 E. Cave Creek Rd., in Cave Creek.

The cast is comprised of 100 people from the community, many of whom provided feedback on the early drafts of the script to shape it into the final version. An officially sanctioned Arizona Centennial Event and Legacy Project, the play includes a mix of professional actors, families, students, and other residents interested in participating in this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets range from $15 to $20 for children under 18, and from $22 to $30 for adults.

February 10-12 Wigwam Festival of Fine Arts

Lovers of Western and Native American art will not want to miss the Wigwam Festival of Art sponsored by the Wigwam Resort and Western Art Collector Magazine. This spectacular three-day festival will take place in a beautiful outdoor setting from Feb. 10-12.

The festival will be filled with award-winning master artists of Western, Native American and Southwestern genres who work across a variety of media including bronze, stone, oils, pottery, carvings, jewelry and more.

February 11 Sharing Healthy Experiences for Girls and their Parents

Cave Creek Unified School District and the Soroptimists of Saguaro Foothills are presenting the S.H.E. (Sharing Healthy Experiences) event Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sonoran Trails Middle School.

Girls in grades 5 through 8 will experience high-energy break-out sessions with experts in the fields of communication, body image, self-esteem, nutrition, law enforcement and fitness. They will enjoy a day of music, dancing, food and hands-on interactive sessions.

February 11-12 ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra ~ The Arizona Centennial Concert

In celebration of the Arizona Centennial, ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra (PMAZ) is presenting The Arizona Centennial concert. This official Arizona Centennial event will feature music that celebrates the diversity of Arizona’s cultural history since becoming a state on Feb. 14, 1912. PMAZ will perform newly-commissioned pieces for orchestra and choir, created for the special occasion as well as works by Carlos Chavez and Randall Thompson.

The Arizona Commission on the Arts (ACA) commissioned two pieces to celebrate Centennial.

The orchestral piece is called “Arizona Centennial Overture,” and was composed by Sy Brandon, a resident of Cottonwood Arizona. Mr. Brandon’s one-movement piece uses many elements of Native American music in the first two sections, and then transitions into a raucous celebration reminiscent of music of the early settlers of Arizona.

The ACA also commissioned a work entitled “Turquoise and Thunder.” The music was written for chorus and piano by Dr. James DeMars and the ethereal text is by Alberto Rios. The beautiful and haunting music uses 20th Century sonorities and text painting to express the wonders of natural Arizona.

The Orchestra and Chorale will each perform additional works that celebrate Arizona, cowboys, the Sonoran Desert and the great American West.

The concert will be held at Cactus Shadows Performing Arts Center, 33606 N. 60th Street, Scottsdale (cross street is Carefree Highway).

February 17-19 Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival Award-winning Native American art, music and dance are coming to downtown Carefree Arizona as Magic Bird Festivals presents the Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival.

The three-day Indian cultural festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 17–19, at Carefree Desert Gardens, 101 Easy St. in downtown Carefree.

Live performances are slated at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. daily.

Set amid the town’s new four-acre, cactus-filled botanical gardens and adjacent to the town’s famous Carefree Sundial, the first-ever cultural festival will feature live hoop dancing and musical performances, along with Native American arts and crafts made by tribal member artisans from throughout the country.

“We are honored to present the first Indian cultural event in downtown Carefree. We feel privileged that such talented and world-renowned Indian artists have agreed to participate in this first-of-a-kind event for the town.

The serenity of the new botanical gardens and the beautiful backdrop of Black Mountain create a special environment of intimacy that we believe the artists and attendees will cherish,” said Roberta Toombs Rechlin, president of Magic Bird Festivals.

Carefree Mayor David Schwan agrees. “Our new cactus gardens are the perfect setting for this type of authentic cultural event, recognizing the diverse people that make Arizona great,” said Schwan.

February 17-19 Waterfront Fine Art & Wine Festival!

Thunderbird Artists’ Festival will line the banks of Scottsdale Waterfront with renowned artists, fine wines and talented musicians, creating romantic reflections across the waters.

Featured artists are husband and wife team, Kathy and Rory Chetelat, two fabulous artists who combine their talents in wood and metal work with the beauty of fused glass to create stunning sculptural and wall-hanging pieces.

The Scottsdale Waterfront is a 1.1 million-squarefoot project, located in downtown Scottsdale at the southwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Camelback Road.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is $3 for adults.

February 18 MIM Celebrates Arizona’s Centennial with “I Am AZ Music” Exhibition

On Feb. 18, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) will add its voice to the statewide centennial celebration by showcasing Arizona’s musical contributions to the world. Through a special exhibition, public programs, teacher curriculum and video stories, MIM will document how music making continues to be an integral part of Arizona’s cultural fabric.

“I Am AZ Music: MIM Celebrates 100 Years of Arizona Music” examines Arizona’s history through a musical lens.

Beginning with the original statehood celebration in 1912, MIM’s exhibition tells the story of numerous musicians, musical instrument makers, recording studios, performing arts organizations and musical traditions significant to Arizona’s past, present and future. The exhibition consists of more than 30 exhibits, each one including artifacts, photographs and audiovisual content designed to bring the subjects to life.

American Healing Arts Foundation (AHAF) a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity unites with Horses Help, along with Trail of Painted Ponies for the “Painting Live Ponies” event. The gathering is held in the sculpture garden at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO (southwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Jomax Road) March 17, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Renowned artists Bob Coonts and Gene Dieckhoner will kick off the biggest live horse painting event of the year in Arizona by painting the first horse with washable watercolor paints that are harmless to the animals. Veterans from AHAF classes, as well as any other veteran attendees, will paint the second horse. Children of Fallen Heroes will paint a miniature pony.

Veterans are invited to sign up for AHAF and Horses Help classes during this event. AHAF offers free art classes for our U.S. veterans by award-winning art instructors for art therapy. For the veteran that would like to take therapy to a deeper level, the foundation also has licensed art therapists.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder continues to affect both wounded and uninjured soldiers, and suicide and divorce rates continue to soar. Art is proven to be a great form of therapy for victims of all backgrounds.

These classes are also intended to reunite veterans with their fellow service members, away from hospitals and the battlefield, in a peaceful environment.

Horses Help provides horse therapy for veterans and those with disabilities.

New Carefree Desert Gardens

American Public Gardens Association, all started with two women who thought downtown Carefree needed “a little sprucing up.” The four-acre Gardens located in the town center are now a spectacular showpiece with hundreds of cacti and plants, many unique including several rare species.

It all began in October 2010. Carefree resident Marilyn Maloney contacted Mayor David Schwan to discuss her concern that the garden was looking a little tired after its 2001 debut, and that she wanted to help improve it.

June Reilly, also a resident, had talked with the Mayor and

several members of the Town Council expressing the same sentiment. Mayor Schwam put the two women in touch with each other and they soon met for coffee.

Maloney and Reilly really hit it off and found they had a similar passion for plants, enhancing the town center, and getting things done. Maloney, a master gardener in South Dakota, and Reilly were originally planning on sprucing things up themselves since there was no funding available for the project. However, realizing their limitations, they decided to contact the pros, the local landscape companies.

Early on, they had coffee at the Sundial with Mark Wdowiak of Desert Foothills Landscape. He was very excited about the project and after consulting his wife, Juanita, and others in the company, he offered to take it on. After meeting with Mayor Schwan, they took the proposal to the Town Council, who approved the project.

The Wdowiaks feel very strongly about community and they donated plants, time and labor valued at a million dollars to bring the vision to reality. They, along with five co-designers, created a visual and emotional masterpiece that was a year in the making.

“The end result is gorgeous!” exclaimed Maloney. “In addition to the plants and re-sculpting of the gardens, the concrete and paint were freshened up.” The Gardens weave their way along Carefree’s Easy Street among features that include the world-famous Carefree Sundial, which received a facelift in August, the Carefree Amphitheater, a waterfall, art and sculpture, a giant gila monster slide, plus numerous shops and restaurants.

The Gardens boast of some of the best specimens in the Valley including a rare Boojum tree and a crested saguaro. The rare crested saguaro with the fanlike or lumpy top is said to occur in only one in 20,000 saguaros. It took two months to gain approval from the Arizona Department of Agriculture for the boxing and replanting of the crested saguaro. It was privately

owned and has been donated to the garden. The curious-looking Boojum tree is a skinny tree that can reach 65 feet in height and resembles a spiny, upside-down carrot.

Many people helped bring the project to fruition. For the Wdowiaks the experience is just one of a number of philanthropic projects in which they have been involved. They also generously contributed landscaping to the Carefree Rural-Metro Fire Station and the Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek. As the Gardens continue to evolve, the Wdowiaks will provide maintenance and will work to keep making it better.

“We are so pleased with how it turned out and the growing interest for the Gardens,” said Reilly. “We believe that this treasure helps instill community pride and will inspire people to take care of their surroundings and keep the downtown beautiful.”

Ensuring that the Gardens will be a destination for years to come, a self-guided map with labels on the plants is available. Part of the vision is that in addition to being beautiful, the Gardens can be educational.

This month, the Carefree Desert Gardens will be the setting for its first-ever cultural event, the Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival.

The three-day event will run from February 17 – 19 and include award-winning Native American art, music and dance. It will feature live hoop dancing and musical performances, along with Native American arts and crafts made by tribal member artisans from throughout the country.

Admission is free.

The juried exhibit and sale features arts and crafts including jewelry, pottery, baskets, carved stone fetishes, woven rugs, bead work, Kachina dolls, clothing, drums, flutes and more.

All arts and crafts at the Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival are recognized under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 to ensure authenticity, quality and collectability. All artists are members of federally or officially State-recognized tribes or are certified as Indian artisans by the governing body of an Indian tribe as a non-member Indian Artisan.

A specialty food market will provide Native American and festival favorites such as Indian-made fry bread with the full variety of toppings, Indian home-baked goodies and more, plus a full offering of typical fair and festival foods.

Tony Duncan of the Apache and Arikara/Hidatsa nations is a four-time world champion teen hoop dancer. He is consistently ranked in the top ten in the world and was recently invited to entertain the First Lady in Washington D.C. Duncan also won the 2011 World Hoop Dance championship in Arizona. In addition, he is also a world-class musician and has been nominated for a Native American Music Award. He is recognized for his smooth and soft melodies of the Apache cane flute.

He began playing the flute at age ten and was hoop dancing since the age of five. Tony, now 28 years old, plays the flute and hoop dances during the same performance.

“Unique” is the term he uses. This approach shows the range Tony is capable of.

Using both forms of art are incorporated into his performances.

“I miss one when I’m doing the other.” he said. The combination includes the tradition of Hoop dancing which represents the circle of life by creating images of life forms such as rattlesnakes, the eagle, butterflies and other forms.

Alex Maldonado will perform music and sell his handmade instruments. His work has been shown at art shows including the Heard Museum Indian Market, Santa Fe Indian Market, Eiteljorge Museum, Navajo Nation Fair, Red Earth, Jackson Hole and Totah Festival.

More recently, Alex and his son, Nick, have been working on metal art, specifically sculptures that make music. Some of these he hopes to preview at the Carefree Indian Market and Cultural Festival.

Through the Native American flute, Alex Maldonado has been able to discover more about his Yaqui heritage, share his music publicly and perform with his daughter, Melissa, and son, Nicholas. “In playing the flute, I feel a connection to finding out more about my people and myself. One of the many victories in life is knowing who you are and being proud of it,” he said.

This sharing of music along with his artistic talent has gained Alex, a tribal member of the Pascua Yaqui Nation now living in Mesa Arizona, national recognition.

With three recordings released, one collaborated with daughter Melissa, he has been recognized

by Native American Music Award nominations for two of his three recordings.

Her answer left her family in awe, and the outcome has

Melissa’s 90-day goal was to sing and play the ukulele in front of 1,000 people to raise money to support an organization that facilitates music education for young people. She ended up dedicating the proceeds to her school district, Cave Creek Unified Schools, knowing it would support her local community first. Ultimately, it was a stepping stone to her ‘bigger’ dream of helping make music education accessible for every student, no matter where he or she goes to school or how much or little money their family has.

It was a chilly, overcast beginning to our morning hike at the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area (SCRCA). About a dozen intrepid trekkers were gathered at the Spur Cross trailhead. A

few hearty souls were clad in shorts, but most had warm jackets, gloves and layers of clothing that could be shed, should it warm up. Each had bounced and bumped their vehicles over the five-mile Spur Cross road that connects Cave Creek to this newest addition to Maricopa County’s Regional Parks System.

We were anticipating the morning’s hike to the ruins of the Spur Cross Dude Ranch, located along the west bank of Cave Creek. Tammy Teegardin, our docent guide, arrived and introduced herself as a botanist with a more than general knowledge of the Spur Cross area.

Her mission on this brisk, Arizona morning was to lead us on an easy two-mile hike while answering any questions about the history, flora, and landmarks of the 2,154 acres that make up the SCRCA.

We began our excursion by following the northwest branch of the Spur Cross (Maricopa) Trail down to a bridge over Cave Creek. The “bridge” was made of 2”x6” boards laid lengthwise (one board for each foot) across the creek.

although at certain times of the year it flows about 4” underground in places.

A short discussion took place between Tammy and some who had hiked this way before. They wondered what happened to the big boulders that they had used to cross the stream some years back. It seems that flood waters had actually picked them up and moved them downstream, where they could be seen, some 200 yards and more away! The power of nature is always a source of amazement.

along the Metate Trail. It is hard to believe such lush and verdant growth can be so close to the arid land just a few miles away. We wandered through trees, bushes and grass listening to tales of the ancient Hohokam and early pioneers to the Cave Creek area.

Our first stop of consequence was the main object of the hike, the ruins of Spur Cross Dude Ranch.

According to Tammy, the founders of the first ranch were cell-mates in prison. Edward M. Joyce, who had killed a cowboy having an affair with his wife, and Philip K. Lewis, who had been charged with embezzlement, decided to go into business together. Joyce was an experienced dude rancher, having worked on several southern Arizona ranches. Lewis had a brother, Alfred, who was operating the Mormon Girl

hiking Spur Cross Ranch Mine on Black Mountain in 1928, when the two friends were released from prison. He suggested a site on the west bank of Cave Creek for a possible dude ranch. Spur Cross Ranch, with its distinctive brand of a u-shaped spur with a cross below it, was born.

The original ranch had a short life due to the competition in the southern part of the state. It was sold to a rancher who ran cattle on it until 1945, when the ranch, which included more than 2,000 acres of deeded land and about 10,000 acres of leased ground, was sold to Warren and Billie Beaubien. The Beaubiens and their six kids built additional cottages and renovated the main building to enable them to accommodate 24 guests. They also added a generator for electricity.

Tammy took us up to the foundations of some of the buildings, all that is left on the site.

We were invited to imagine the square-dancers reveling in the evenings, campfires and sing-alongs. We walked over to the filled-in swimming pool area, where we were told of the last days of this lovely dude ranch. Warren had created a small, make-shift landing strip nearby. One night in 1953, Warren was killed trying to land his small plane. Some of the remains of the crash can still be found on the nearby creek embankment. Billie and the kids sold the ranch and moved away soon after his death. The buildings were demolished and the land became cattle range once more.

As our hike proceeded, we stopped at a lovely shaded pool near the old landing strip. The pool, created by former Park Supervisor, John Gunn, is fed from a nearby well and holds several species of fish, some endangered. An infrared camera, mounted on a tree beside the pool, records nocturnal visitations to this secluded area.

Hugh Blanding The next stop on our journey was on a side trail, the Towhee. The hike proceeded past a downed saguaro (a good place to find snakes), a Saguaro whose limb has served many as a seat, and many plants and bushes good for gourmandizing, according to Tammy.

Back on the Metate Trail, Tammy took us to a double metate, namesake for the trail we had been following. There were two mortars in the large stone, each with a small mano or pestle for grinding.

The mano is nothing more than a fist sized stone that is used to pulverize grains or pods placed in the metate. After a demonstration of Mesquitepod grinding, Tammy produced a small packet of Mesquite flour for a taste-test. It reminded me of cinnamon, for others it was chocolate. Everyone had an opinion; Tammy remained non-committal. We found out that it takes 12 cups of pods to create 1 cup of flour; the seeds are inedible.

We followed the Metate Trail past a swimming hole, back over the creek and up to its junction with Spur Cross Trail, 1.5 miles north of our original trailhead. On the way back to our trailhead, we stopped to view some petroglyphs on a boulder where a wash crossed the road/trail. Much is left to the imagination when viewing a petroglyph. My impression was of 2 people, one with a bow, 2 bighorn sheep, and 1 possible deer on the side of the boulder next to the wash. On the top of the

boulder, I could make out a spiral like the one used as a logo for Cave Creek Regional Park. The rest were too worn for accurate description.

Tammy left us with one last lesson. From her pack she withdrew a small jar of salve. It was made from creosote leaves and vodka. She told us it made a great sun-screen and would cure any disease ending in “-itis”. Well, that’s the way I heard it!

How do you describe your music? These days we’re kind of a Top 40 rock band that plays 20 percent original music. We play pop rock and pop country.

What do you like most about performing here? Knowing the history behind Harold’s -- who has played there, and playing for Creekers. It is still very much a Cave Creek bar and I appreciate that. When I was 16, I worked at Harold’s as a bus boy, and they have been very good to us. We perform there once a month and during special events, like their 3rd of July Fireworks Celebration and their annual anniversary party.

The thing I like most about Harold’s is that you know everyone. It’s really a big part of the Cave Creek scene. The characters all go there. If you want to get a good taste of Cave Creek, go to Harold’s.

What’s your favorite meal or snack from this venue? The Strip District Sandwich. It’s from Pittsburgh, but you have to put A-1 on that.

What’s the best-kept secret about this venue? (Laughing) There’s really no secret about Harold’s … everyone knows everyone. Everyone already knows your dirty laundry. There are no secrets there.

How do you rate the music scene in the Cave Creek/Carefree area? It’s unparalleled. There’s really no place like it. I grew up in Cave Creek. It is a dream situation for any young musician because you can see live music in three different places any night of the week.

How do you describe your music? I heard the term “new folk.” That is probably a good way to say what it is I do. It’s kind of all over the place, but generally acoustic guitar-driven. I am inspired by all kinds of music and I like to write in a bunch of styles.

What do you like most about performing here? The response from the Cave Creek crowds has been really positive. You don’t find that everywhere you go. Each time I’ve come here I get a listening crowd eager to hear new music.

What’s your favorite meal or snack from this venue? All the fish. Any of it. Sooooo good.

What’s the best-kept secret about this venue? Well, every time I’ve played there, all the women who work there are beautiful. I suppose that’s not really a secret.

How do you rate the music scene in the Cave Creek/Carefree area? I honestly haven’t been able to observe the music scene in Cave Creek. It’s always been come in to play and leave the next day with the occasional hike in there somewhere.

When can we see you perform here again? I want to make Cave Creek a regular spot on my tours out west. Seems like things are picking up for me there and it’s a beautiful place to visit.

How do you describe your music? Boogie- and blues-inflected, guitar-driven, Texas-style fun.

What do you like most about performing here? The atmosphere is conducive to putting on your best performance, and the audience is way into it. Sam and Mitch, the owners, love live music and they have created an Eden-like setting for performing. The first time I went in the doors, I smelled great coffee, I saw four comfy chairs and a ‘house’ guitar and I knew I was in the right place. Simply put, when it’s our night to play, it’s like we’re having a party in our own backyard. It’s like home.

What’s your favorite meal or snack from this venue? Janey’s Fantastic Sandwiches with everything on them.

What’s the best-kept secret about this venue? It’s a little hard to find, especially at night, but it’s well worth the effort.

How do you rate the music scene in the Cave Creek/Carefree area? I’ve only lived in the Creek since May 2011, and I must say that I’m amazed at the variety of great music you can find in town almost every night of the week. It’s very inspiring to me. And, just as important, maybe even more so than just the music, is the fact that there is an audience for all of this great music.

I’m glad to be considered a part of it.

How do you describe your music? Eclectic, creative, quality sound, tone, and developed skills, different from the norm ... songs that have been “ lived in”, authentic.

What do you like most about performing here? I like the kicked-back atmosphere. There seems to be a high degree of appreciation for what I offer as a musician and artist. That’s huge in my world. Mark Bradshaw, the owner, Dawn Hoffer, the manager, and the staff have been really supportive of my craft and of me personally. They’ve all taken notice that I’m bringing something special to their venue and often comment favorably to me about it. In return, I try to always do my best to deliver the goods. I take a lot a care in my setup to sound as good as possible.

Also, I like that they’ve given me steady, weekly work, rather than just hit and miss. Many of us make our living entirely from music. I do. I think Mark has a great appreciation for what goes into being a serious working musician, and the difference between a hack and an artist, and in turn really supports his artists with steady work. Very rare to find club owners who really care about musicians in that way. Golden, really. I feel like I’ve found a “patron” of the arts in Mark and Dawn.

What’s your favorite meal or snack from this venue? The burgers are the best in town and the fries are a-plenty at good prices.

What’s the best-kept secret about this venue? Where it’s located. It’s “somewhere in Cave Creek.” If you’re a biker, you know where it is. For everyone else … go on the adventure and find it.

How do you rate the music scene in the Cave Creek/Carefree area? I lived in Austin, Texas for three years. Cave Creek is like a little slice of Austin here in the Valley, and that’s a good thing. For such a small stretch of road, there are more good bars with live music here per square foot than anywhere else in the Valley. For me, it’s the best part of the Valley scene and, because of its location, it is kind of exclusive to those who either know about it or those willing to travel to get here.

When can we see you perform here again? I play every Sunday night from 6 to 10 p.m. following the afternoon band that plays outdoors - I play inside, but it’s still open to the patio. I also play every Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. up the street at the Cave Creek Tap Haus, co-owned by the same owners as the Hideaway Grill.

When can we see you perform here again? The Duffy King Koalition is proudly performing as The Cave Creek Tap Haus, “Haus Band” every Friday and Saturday night. I also perform solo acoustic shows on Wednesdays at the Hideaway Grill.

Meribeth Reeves, DFT managing director, said the community theater has taken on unique projects in its 37-year history, but nothing of this magnitude.

“We owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to writer Lori Vander Maten, who spent hundreds of hours researching Arizona history to write our first community play. This new form of theater will include 37 actors from our community portraying more than 100 characters through stories, poetry, music, dance photography and other visuals images about the people and events that brought about Arizona’s statehood,” Reeves said.

Vander Maten, a talented performer and director who holds a MFA from UCLA in playwriting, grew up in Tucson and has always been interested in Arizona history. Her husband, Michael, is an historical re-enactor and antiques collector, so she was familiar with some stories, but had no idea how this

With the help of author Patrick Grady, who also serves as a research associate for Cave Creek Museum, and the Arizona Historical Society, she delved into diaries and journals and reviewed oral histories to gain a better understanding of the people who lived here more than 100 years ago.

Director Mark-Allen C. Clemente said directing an original work is a first for him. “It has been great to be part of the process. My challenge as a director is to bring these first person stories to life and provide audiences a glimpse of territorial life, as well as make it interesting to all ages. Lori certainly provided me a great script that will be appealing to everyone. My job is to add the ‘visual glitter’ that will make it shine.”

Everything about this special Centennial play is original, including the music, which was composed by Kevin Glenn of Carefree. Glenn, a well-known performer, composer and community volunteer, is also an actor in the play.

“This is totally different from any project I’ve worked on because I composed music set to lyrics written by someone else. The challenge was to understand and connect to the mood and feel that the writer had in mind while writing the lyrics,” he said. “I truly enjoyed the process. Lori’s lyrics were written in such a descriptive way so that the music came to me fairly quickly. She made it easy for me.”

The play’s music is evocative of the time period. “It’s got a simple, charming elegance to it. Various members of the cast will sing the songs and there are some scenes with the entire cast,” he said.

Kodi Riddle is a Cave Creek resident who plays the role of Sharlot Hall, the show’s narrator.

“Sharlot was the Territorial historian of Arizona in the early 1900s with a great passion for the people who came to the wilds of Arizona. She made a large impact and was influential in helping us become our own state separate from New Mexico,” Riddle said. “I was attracted to the challenge of the role and the fact that it is an original piece. How often do you get to act in a play with the actual playwright in the room? It’s an incredible experience and opportunity.”

So, what will you gain by seeing In the Devil’s Frying Pan? “This play was written about real people, their lives, and contributions. It is fascinating material and I think people will come away with a deep appreciation of those who came before us, paving the way for us to live the way we do.

The trials and tribulations that these pioneers and the Native Americans went through, and the problems that they faced in those days, are absolutely mind-boggling,” Glenn said.

There are a number of names for this classic meal. All versions are slightly different, but the ingredients stay the same. No matter what the version, this is a widely loved dish, and it will be the superstar of any meal in which it is served. Here is one version that makes a great impression, and is fairly simple to create. Fresh asparagus complements this dish perfectly. Enjoy!

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 (6 ounce) beef tenderloin filets 1 tablespoon butter

Boeuf en Croute Directions: Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet over high heat until very hot. Sear the filets until well-browned on both sides, 1-2 minutes per side. Remove the filets from the skillet, and chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Filets must be cold.

8 ounces fresh white mushrooms, minced 1/3 cup minced shallot

In the same skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add mushrooms, shallots and garlic, stirring

until shallots are tender and translucent and mushrooms have given off their juice, about 6-8 minutes.

2 tablespoons red wine

Stir in 2 tablespoons of red wine, scraping and dissolving any browned flavor bits from the pan.

Pour 1 ½ cups of red wine into a saucepan over medium heat, simmering until wine is reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Season wine sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Meanwhile, whisk egg into milk in a bowl, and brush the pastry packages with the egg mixture for a browner crust, if desired.

Return the bundles to the refrigerator to keep cold.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Place puff pastry bundles onto the prepared baking sheet, and bake in preheated oven until pastry is golden brown and crisp, and the filets are the desired degree of doneness (for medium rare, about 15 minutes; an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read 130 degrees.

Serve each filet in the pastry shell with spoonfuls of wine sauce on top.

Ingredients: 24 thin asparagus spears

Asparagus with Lemon Butter Directions: Wash asparagus and line them up on a cutting board with tops even. Cut off tough bottom ends.

1 lemon 2 tablespoons butter olive oil Kosher salt

Fill a skillet or oval casserole half full with salted water and bring to a boil. Dump in asparagus all at once. When water returns to a boil, cook asparagus until crisp-tender, about 1 to 3 minutes, depending on size. Drain.

Return asparagus to hot pan, squeeze lemon juice over top. Add butter and a drizzle of olive oil, tossing to coat. Add kosher salt to taste. Serve immediately.
