We are spiritual community that has places of worship for most religious affiliations and community outreach benefiting our residents.

We are an entertainment community that has the Lake Erie Crushers for baseball, Rockin’ on the River for live music and live theater venues such as the Palace Theatre, Stocker Center, French Creek, just to name a few.

We are a historically significant and cultural community with various underground railroad stops, Oberlin College’s admission of black students and women students and the women’s suffrage movement.

We are an entrepreneurial community that has been home to pioneers who changed the way we think and use products. Some of the company names include Lorain Products, Thew Shovel, Garford Manufacturing, Invacare,

We are a community that supports and gives back to those most in need. We have organizations dedicated to helping the homeless, women and children in need, veterans, mental health and addiction issues, animal welfare, LGBTQ. Easter Seals was founded in Elyria.

Opportunity and Potential Reside in Lorain County

Lorain County has always been known for being a great place to live and a great place to grow your business. From our first industry of shipbuilding to steel and to an automotive hotspot, we find ourselves on the cusp of being part of the “Silicon Heartland” as Intel broke ground for the $20 Billion chipmaking facility near Columbus. As we witnessed with Detroit with the automotive industry and Pittsburgh with the steel industry, our location fueled growth locally and will do the same with our location on the shores of Lake Erie. Ten years ago, Lorain County Community College went “all in” on the exact curriculum needed to train and fill the talent pipeline for the 3,000 new jobs Intel will create. We are so lucky to have a nationally recognized institution of higher learning like LCCC, setting the pace for workforce development and the next generation of industrial revolution coming our way.

And we still have growth within our automotive sector, as Ford recently announced a $1.5 Billion dollar investment in Lorain County, where it plans to make electric vehicles. Ford knows that Lorain County has great workers, and their investment will provide an additional 2,000 workers to our local workforce. The changing face of manufacturing locally

and worldwide has once again put Lorain County in the right place at the right time, as our local elected officials, educational partners and regional and state economic development partners all came together to make this happen.

While Lorain County has always been known for working together to make good things happen, the pandemic made it apparent that we truly needed to get everyone on board to survive the economic effects it inflicted on communities. We lost some businesses, but we also saw an uptick of entrepreneurial start-ups that included businesses many from our historically underrepresented communities. The SBDC (Small Business Development Center) at LCCC and the Lorain County Chamber worked with many of these minority businesses to help them get started with webinars and training and networking opportunities to help them thrive. A free online Minority Business Directory helps promote them and it includes businesses from the African American, Hispanic, Women, Veteran, Disabled, LGBTQ and Rural communities.

Lorain County has seen investment in our legacy cities, where Lorain’s downtown streetscape has led to new bars, restaurants, a hotel, and shopping filling the many shuttered downtown storefronts. Elyria is moving forward with an

E-sports complex due to transform their downtown into a hub that will include amenities found in mixeduse developments – restaurants, entertainment, and apartments to bring Broad Street back to life. Likewise, we have investments in our Eastern most communities with Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield, and North Ridgeville continuing to see new businesses open and expand. The recent ribbon cutting for the new Bendix facility in Avon highlighted a world class facility that will ensure their presence in Lorain County for decades to come. Lastly, the Lorain County Chamber is finishing up a year’s long community outreach to establish a 501c3 public, private partnership. The purpose is to facilitate and build upon established relationships to position Lorain County as a prime location for corporations, businesses, and entrepreneurs to open, expand and relocate here. This organization will act as the unified voice and liaison to Team NEO and JobsOhio as more businesses decide to call Ohio home. The goal is to make sure our workforce includes all segments of our society will have the opportunity to benefit from the growing economic environment in Lorain County.

Other Veterans Helping Each

Knowing what benefits you as a veteran or spouse of a veteran is eligible for can make a big difference in the quality of your life. For Lorain County Veterans, we help explain what you may be entitled to due to your service to our country. We assist veterans throughout the county in getting them answers to their questions.

Through my service, what kind of benefits am I entitled to?

Many veterans (and their spouses) go years without ever asking that question. Here is how we at the Lorain County Veteran Service commission can help.

We have Veteran Service Officers (VSO) trained and ready to help veterans and their families file Service-Connected Disability claims and pension claims. We also help in signing up veterans for VA healthcare and assist with filing for final expenses.

For those veterans experiencing financial difficulties, we have a dedicated team that can assist in helping to file for temporary Financial Assistance (FA). If approved for this program, we can assist veterans in paying for their housing expenses, car payments, and even utilities, to

name just a few FA possibilities.

Finally, we transport hundreds of veterans each year to and from their VA appointments

at no cost to the veteran. Should you need transportation to your VA appointment, please call us at 440-284-4624.

Earn as You Learn

LCCC’s Earn and Learn programs help students earn an income and gain job experience while attending college.

Lorain County Community College is ramping up its Earn and Learn programs, providing students opportunities to earn an income while they gain relevant job experience and attend classes. The format, where students split their time between coursework and industry-specific employment, began in LCCC’s microelectronic manufacturing program. It’s been so successful — maintaining 100% employment rates for students post-graduation — that the college has replicated the format across many career pathways.

Today, LCCC students in automation engineering, cyber security, software development, data analytics, digital fabrication, CNC machining and now nursing can participate in Earn and Learn programs, increasing their chances of graduating debt-free, building their resume, and securing a job before finishing school.

Reassembled, and Moving Forward

Educators across the county are slowly finding their groove in their classrooms as the COVID-19 pandemic is tapering off. Mask mandates are gone. Remote learning is an option of the past. There is a feeling of confidence and reassurance that the worst of the pandemic is behind us. While the feeling may be gone, there are still lingering effects brought on by the pandemic; and now is the time to rebuild the education gap caused by nearly two years of disrupted learning.

Schools have increased services such as social workers and school counselors in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to focus on the social-emotional wellbeing of not only students but their families as well. It is important to know that educating our students is more than just learning academic content. It is supporting the whole child, and their family.

And although our schools are making strides in education, there are still challenges facing all school districts - mainly staffing issues. Schools all over are in desperate need of substitute teachers, bus drivers and support staff. To be a substitute teacher, a bachelor’s degree is required in any field, coupled with a clean background check and experience working with children. The best part about serving as a substitute teacher is the flexibility. Bus drivers are the key

behind getting students to and from school safely every day. But, without bus drivers, it would be a challenge to transport students to afterschool programs, such as sporting events. Some districts are paying more than $20 per hour for drivers; and are making plans to train those without experience. But, if you are looking for an alternative way to assist with schools, districts are also in need of substitute support staff. These roles include teacher aides, custodians and food service workers. These roles are imperative to not only meeting the needs of today’s students; but also to ensure each school building remains organized, clean, safe and overall run more efficiently. Remember, our students deserve the best.

One local high school teacher put Lorain County on the map in the spring when he was named National Teacher of the Year for 2022. Oberlin High School history teacher Kurt Russell received the recognition on April 19, 2022; and since that day, he has been rallying for teachers and students across the country. After personally hearing him speak, one can truly feel his passion for educating students. As a teacher, he understands that not every day is a good day. There will undoubtedly be bad days. He makes his presence known by attending extracurricular events. It’s just as important to be seen outside of the classroom as it is to be seen inside the classroom. Teachers must be present and kind. He never gives up on his students. And he has HOPE - hope that today’s students will have the power and knowledge to thrive as citizens in either the workforce, military or higher education. And that is something we can all learn from and implement in our daily lives.

In Lorain County, schools are working together to fill the gaps of the prior two years and amazing work is being done. Our focus is on students and their families to ensure learning isn’t lost but rather it is being rediscovered. Oftentimes students thrive in a classroom setting, but if your child is having a bit of difficulty adjusting, please know the ESC of

And, remember, like National Teacher of the Year Kurt Russell, tells his audiences: Have HOPE - because just a little bit of hope goes a long way in the world of education.

Connecting People Who Care With Causes That Matter

Community Foundation of Lorain County works to improve the quality of life for those living and working in Lorain County. We make grants to local non-profits thanks to the support of income from endowment funds contributed by individuals, families, and businesses. Non-profit

organizations and school districts also collaborate with us to create their endowments to ensure forever funding for organizational needs. In 2021, the Community Foundation of Lorain County received more than $6.2M in gifts, distributed approximately $6.8M in grants and scholarships, and

Founded in 1980, the Community Foundation of Lorain County is made up of more than 670+ endowment funds valued at approximately $163M. A Strong Foundation

Founded in 1971, Lorain County JVS offers accredited career-technical education for high school students in

grades 9-12 and adult learners. Through career tech programs, students gain the skills, knowledge, and

training needed to be a success in their careers. Located on a 100-acre campus in Oberlin, with the school building being 10 acres under one roof, Lorain County JVS is one of the largest career tech schools in the state!

Over 30 career tech programs are offered for high school students and numerous career development programs for adult learners. These courses are led by passionate instructors that will guide the students toward their successful futures.

Alina Younkin, 2022 Masonry Trades alumni, is now an Apprentice with the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Ohio Local 5 Union. “I graduated when I was seventeen and went right to work in my career field, getting good paychecks. Lorain County JVS gave me a head start in life!”

The Lorain County Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting and supporting our local business community. With over 2 years of interruptions, delays, and postponements due to COVID-19, we have worked hard to remain the voice of the business community and provide leadership during this unusual time. We solidified our partnerships to become stronger as we learned to navigate new ways to do business during the pandemic. When others cancelled, we adjusted and pivoted to see that our members could still take advantage of educational

programming and training, creative networking opportunities, discounted business services and ways to promote their business. In 2023 and beyond, the County Chamber will provide a renewed focus with our partners on economic development and workforce opportunities for all segments of our community. An upskilled and ready workforce will prepare us to welcome new businesses, entrepreneurs, and residents to Lorain County.

Lorain Public Library System (LPLS) is the largest library system in Lorain County. Services are provided from six branches in Lorain, Avon, Columbia, North Ridgeville and Sheffield Lake as well as our Little Library on the Lake, open seasonally at Lakeview Park in Lorain. We also have Outreach Services for seniors including a Books by Mail program and by appointment one-on-one tech assistance.

Cindy Andrews is President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Lorain County. Cindy has been at the Community Foundation for four years, during which she led the Board and staff in strategic planning. Lorain County Veterans Service Commission

Joe Gee has been a resident of Lorain County for over fifty years and is a longtime advocate for veterans. That sense of duty began as a student at Vermilion High School, and during the height of the Vietnam War, Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as Radioman. After basic training, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines and deployed to Vietnam (68-69).

After his service, he came home and worked 31 years for Ford Motor Company and is currently on the UAW Local 2000 Retirees Executive Board.

Marcia Ballinger, Ph.D. has more than 30 years in community college leadership roles advancing student success, workforce and economic development, strategic planning, and institutional advancement. She serves as Lorain County Community College’s (LCCC) fifth president and previously held positions as Provost, Vice President for Strategic Development, and Vice President of LCCC’s Foundation. Her unwavering commitment to equity and student success has led to significant reductions in educational achievement gaps – especially for underserved students.

Through Dr. Ballinger’s strategic vision, LCCC became the first community college in Ohio to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Microelectronic Manufacturing in 2018, and a second applied bachelor’s degree in Smart Industrial Automated Systems Engineering Technology in 2022.

Lorain County Health & Dentistry

Lorain County Health & Dentistry (LCH&D) is an independent, non-profit Community Health Center operating since 2002, under the direction of CEO Stephanie Wiersma. With a mission to improve the community’s health, particularly for those most in need, LCH&D provides primary and preventive health care of the highest quality to persons of all ages, at six locations in Lorain, Elyria and Oberlin. r. Glenn Faircloth has been the Superintendent of the Lorain County JVS since 2012. Under his leadership, Lorain County JVS continues to offer effective, high-functioning programs that equip high school students with curriculum built on integrated academic and technical content and work-based learning opportunities. The JVS Adult Career Center connects motivated adults who want a new career, improve current job skills or enhance their daily lives with short–term training that leads to certifications and skilled positions in the workforce.

Dr. Faircloth is a U.S. Army veteran. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and a Master’s Degree in Urban Educational Leadership, both earned at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He received his Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Dr. Faircloth ultimately believes that education is the true key to unlocking poverty, erasing ignorance and revealing opportunities!

Chronic Disease Management

Lorain County Health & Dentistry (LCH&D) delivers high quality care and, while ready to serve everyone, specifically seeks to serve the vulnerable population experiencing poverty in Lorain County. In 2021, LCH&D treated 17,585 unduplicated medical and dental patients of all ages. We consistently achieve excellent clinical outcomes, and in 3rd Quarter, 2022, reported record achievements in managing patients with Diabetes and Hypertension. From July -September 2022, 91.7% of patients with Hypertension had controlled Blood Pressure on their subsequent clinic visit. In the same period, 96.39% of patients with Diabetes had the recommended HgbA1c blood test to measure glucose level over time. Of these, 76.1% had a controlled HgbA1c level.

At LCH&D, Team-based Care is an important component of our work, and the basis for our success. At each of our six health center locations in Lorain County, we employ the best professional and support staff who have a heart for our community, and an extra dose of compassion.
