EDITORS LETTER Welcome to Issue Thirteen “The Mini Issue”. We are calling it the mini issue is because it is mini compared to our others. The reason for this is we are currently putting all our efforts in making Image 34 grow and be the best it can be. However we didn’t want to not release an issue.

So we just made it a mini one. We have some exciting things to announce very soon. But that will all have to wait until it happens.

However it may be mini issue it’s got a cover girl who is dreams are so big they could fill this issue a million times over. You may have recognise her. Rachel Rose the issue nine cover girl. Rachel is set her sights on concerning 2015 for her own. She will start this year by releasing her debut album “It’s Time” and going on tour with X-Factor runner up Ray Quinn. We are so proud of Rachel and what she is doing and couldn’t think of a better cover girl to start this years issues. Enjoy the issue.

On Saturday 14th Feb the University of St Andrews hosted one of the highlights of the Scottish social colander, the St. Andrews Charity Fashion Show. Perhaps best know as the event where Will first met Kate Middleton, this annual spectacular continues to impress with a mixture of established luxury brands and the best new designers with the aim of raising money for worthwhile charities.

Drake & Hutch, the British underwear brand was certainly one of the highlights of the show impressing the 1600 strong audience and global press alike. Donning bowler hats, Drake & Hutchs’ signature logo, and luxury underwear the male models strutted through the raucous and “a little grabby”, as one press observer put it, crowd. The collection on show consisted of core designs and limited edition seasonal prints with a “hunting theme”, certainly apt in the decadent university grounds. RACHEL ROSE RACHEL ROSE!! Welcome back to Image 34. We are so pleased to have you back (can you believe it’s been a year). We are also very excited about what is about to happen to you this year.

So jumping right in! Your very first album. Why did you not go for an E.P?

Honestly, I just have so much to say, so much to sing about. So much has happened in the last couple of years! I've not released anything for such a long Hme I wanted to give people something worth waiHng for. An E.P wasn't enough this Hme round.

Your new album is called “It’s Time” what was the reason behind that?

One of the tracks is called It's Time which inspired the Htle, and it just fiLed because it everything right now is just perfect. AMer working on this album for such a long Hme (two years or so) it just feels like the right Hme now, and my Hme.

What inspired the album?

Everything! LOL. My life has been an emoHonal roller coaster the last couple of years and that inspired so much wriHng. The sound itself I can't really pinpoint an exact person or instrument that has inspired

it, but basically anything that has made me feel. All I want for this album is to make people feel.

Whether it's happy, or excited, or sad, or sexy or whatever. I want it to impact them like other music impacts me.

How did you go about wriRng the songs for the album?

I'm one of those hard and fast musicians (lol so immature) but honestly if lyrics come out quickly, it's a keeper, if i'm struggling with it, I just let it go. My producers (Dan Weinberg and Trey Mukwaya) send me music and I tend to write to that. I find thats my best way of working.

Although, one of the songs on the album was

wriLen by me at my piano aMer a heartbreak. It's one of my absolute favourites from the album. A real moment of just pouring my heart out, creaHng something beauHful out of something painful.

What is your favourite song off the album and why?

OOOHHH Tricky tricky… hmmm ok probably for fun 'Trouble' because it's fun and sexy and cheeky and I love singing it. It makes ME wanna dance so I hope it'll have the same effect on everybody else.

What did you learn most when making this album?

About who I am. The sound I love, the musician I want to be, and that you have to LIVE to feel, and you have to feel to write. I learnt to

open up, experience the good and the bad, and using those experiences to grow and channel them into something amazing.

What do you hope people will take away with this album?

I want them to feel. I love it when a song comes on the radio and it makes me want to wind down my windows and dance behind the wheel or cry my eyes out like "OH MY GOD YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL" and eat loads of ice cream. I want people to connect with the album that way.

What was your personal high of making this album?

Working with my cousin and working with Ben Waters. My cousin, Dan Weinberg, is an incredible musician, and an unbelievable producer.

Through this journey he has become one of my best best friends and I feel so blessed and lucky that he is part of my family and my number one team member.

Having Ben Waters feature on the album too is also like a dream come true. He's been an inspiraHon and one of my heroes since I was a liLle girl. I am overwhelmed that he has been apart of my journey and adding something extra special to the album.

Of course this isn’t the only bit of exciRng news that you have to tell us.

You will also be one of the supporRng acts for singer Ray Quinn on his new tour!

How did it feel to be chosen for that?

Oh it has been so exciHng!!!

Ray is an absolute darling, and have had so much fun hanging out and working with him to this date and can't wait for more in the future!

How did it come about?

He came into my live music night that I run in Camden at Gilgamesh on the first night I was running it, and we just hit it off! I then supported him at his EP launch in London and it went from there.

What will you be singing on tour?

I will be performing the album :D eeeee and a few covers.

What would you say to anyone who is thinking of doing something like you?

Do it. Do it with every part of you. Throw yourself into exactly what you love and don't let anybody tell you you can't do it. Don' let anybody ask you what your back up plan is, screw the back up plan.

Things won't always go right, bad things will happen, people will let you down, but don't don't let it stop you. Go punch stuff, have a run, eat ice cream, and try again tomorrow. Believe in yourself, because if you do, other people will follow…

What would be your top Rp for not going crazy when making an album?

Be paHent! Trust that it all will come together. If we had finished the album when we said we were going to, we would have missed out a whole mini chapter of my life which created 3 of the album tracks! I believe in everything happening for a reason, and everything just seems to make sense right now.

Fight The Power!

The Rise of The Female Superhero Twenty first century cinema is practically dominated by one genre of box-office smashing, merchandise selling, allconsuming enjoyment; the superhero movie.

With the likes of Superman, Batman and The Avengers crew blowing up the

Hollywood box office, it’s hard to imagine a moment in the film year when we’re not waiting to be saved by some spandex sporting hero.

With Marvel and DC chucking out superheroes in film left, right and centre throughout the last ten years, there’s been a serious

lack of female characters that go anything beyond a background love interest, parental figure or narrative drive via their eventual death. This has often been the case in film as a generalisation; female roles are put into shallow categories that appeal to a young, male audience to ensuring aesthetic pleasure. However, times are changing and our prayers are being answered because finally it looks as if we’re getting some bad-ass female superheroes. Yes, we’ve had the token early flicks like Halle Berry’s dreadful Catwoman but there’s still been a lack of sincere female superheroes that are there to serve as more than the average purpose.

To clarify, the war of sexism in superhero films

is by no means over but there is joy to be found in the beginning of a change in these films to accommodate an audience, both male and female, that wants their heroines to be complex, brave and relatable. I first noticed the increase in credible female characters in these male dominated movies with the likes of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Mystique in the Joss Whedon’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in The Avengers. Finally, there were some strong women to be found, toting intelligence, strength, power and talent. Alas, the small victory was destined to be squashed by the constant reminder by both male and female journalists that bombarded these actresses with stale questions about their eating habits, the necessity

to don underwear under those Lycra costumes and a barrage of fitness questions. Well, excuse me but Captain America’s pants are as tight as Black Widows but I don’t see anybody asking Chris Evans how he squeezes his buns in there.

It’s almost as if these film makers and actresses are striving for the chance to blow apart the stereotypes of women in superhero movies and yet are being constantly told they’re meant to be there for the male gaze. While Robert Downey Jr enjoys interview questions on the progression of Tony Stark’s ego and psychological state, poor Johansson is a second thought, being asked about her diet to prepare for the role. It is so

ridiculously boring and if audiences find it tedious, can you imagine how she feels?

Despite this constant reminder from the media and some of society, that perhaps the world’s not ready for a female superhero protagonist, the big boys of movie production, who’ve joined forces with the likes of Marvel and DC, seem to have found their common sense and are going along with the movement of powerful women anyway, hoorah!

In the next couple of years we’ve got so many ass-kicking women to look forward to it’s as if all my Christmas’ have come at once. With the introduction to the new Wonder Woman, played

by Gal Godot, in the up

and coming Batman vs Superman flick, the lasso toting power house will be bagging her own movie for 2017.

amount of professionalism that one would find with say, Thor or Batman.

The film will be directed

by Michelle MacLaren and will focus on the origins story of how the Amazonian princess finds her way to the world of men and Earth. Just having a female superhero as the one and only protagonist is a major step forward in the demolition of the out dated theories of women in cinema. Also, while narrative details are yet to be confirmed, the general storyline of an origins plot means there should be some great character development, plot analysis and the necessity of actually tackling a female superhero with the same

A film like this may seem insignificant in the support of feminism but with film and television being so increasingly viewed by young boys and girls, it’s going to do wonders with instilling a positive view of women.

You see so many young boys dressed up as Iron Man and Spider Man but where are costumes for the girls? Young girls want to be strong, brave and exciting but many still want to remain feminine, it’s about time this genre of cinema gives them something to sink their teeth in. Nobody is saying that there’s women on screen can’t be viewed as beautiful or desirable. I

know plenty of people (me) who enjoy the visual pleasure of seeing Chris Hemsworth throw around that mega hammer but nobody is dismissing these male characters as nothing but eye candy, characters like Black Widow are.

The comic book movies aren’t the only ones that are branching out the representation of women in their films and it turns out you don’t have to be super to be a hero. Films like Paul Feig’s new Ghostbuster reboot, which will feature an allfemale cast, has been met with despairing fans asking “why?” but why not, right? Boys all over the world looked up to those ghost-busting boys back in the 80’s, give the girls a chance, the characters are

dealing with slimy ghosts, don’t tell me a women in the role is weirder than that. Disney is much the same with the production of next year’s Moana, which tells the story about young women who undertakes a wonderful sailing journey with her hero and demi-god to discover a fabled island.

Young girls love Princess movies, nobody is taking that away but, while films like Frozen are beginning to instil the change, they’re after more than just a Prince and happilyever-after. Girls need adventure just as much as the boys do- so do grown women for that matter.

While many of those in the industry stand by the notion that a mainstream audience just isn’t ready to see a strong, powerful

female hero figure in a protagonist role, society is crying out for a change in that perception. Take a breath Iron Man lovers, nobody wants to take away the other movies

from you, they’re great!

What does needs to change, however, is the generalised perception of these female characters in superhero movies and similar genres. Women are bold, they’re strong, they’re brave and they’re pretty bad-ass; it’s about time we all saw that. Now where did I put my spandex...?
