OWNED BEAUTY T h i s month, IM A G ra duates and I n s t ru ctor s w er e i n s pi re d by the c o v e rs of Jet M aga z i n e and Fashio n F a i r C o sm eti cs. The iconic line relaunched its capsule collection in September, 2021 and renewed interest in a brand that was once the largest Black-owned cosmetics company in the world. Ebony Traveling Fashion Fair: The Ebony Traveling Fashion Fair launched in 1958 as a charity fundraiser to benefit Flint-Goodridge Hospital, a facility that predominantly served African American patients in New Orleans, LA. Clothing for the show was provided by Johnson Publishing Company’s founder, John Johnson. In addition to supplying garments for the show, ticket recipients received a subscription of Jet or Ebony magazine, both of which were owned by Johnson Publishing Company.

For the five decades that followed its launch, Eunice Walker Johnson directed and produced the Ebony Fashion Fair. The show continued to be a charitable event and raised over $55 million in funds to benefit African American charities. Fashion Fair Cosmetics: Foundation shade ranges were very limited for women of color during the run of the Ebony Fashion Fair. Models had to mix their own foundations because major cosmetic brands were not interested in developing a range to suit deeper hues. Eunice Johnson took notice and created a mail-order makeup compact that would later grow into a full cosmetics line due to high demand. In 1973, Fashion Fair Cosmetics was launched and it stood to serve its clients for decades. In 2021, former Johnson Publishing executives, Mayberry McKissack and Desiree Rogers, relaunched the brand with a fresh look and updated product line. Fashion Fair is now available at Sephora and Fashion Fair Online. Check out our shoot inspired by the frosts, powdery hues and lashes that graced the faces of Jet Magazine cover models between the ‘70s-’80s.
