Research, Engagement and Achievements 2020 Research Projects External funding By the end of December 2020, the Institute had secured around $5.79 M funding for 34 new projects including contract extensions, and additional funding. (Actual funding $5,794,802.) New projects include a major $2.86 three year project funded by ACIAR and led

by Professor Lee Baumgartner that takes fish passage research in South-East Asia to the next level - policy and legislation; a multidisciplinary three year project on rewarding land managers for good soil stewardship; another multi-disciplinary research project taking a novel approach to develop a model wildlife health surveillance system in the Riverina, NSW; a project funded by the National Mental Health Commission that builds on the current Equally Well project; a philanthropically funded project on cryptic wetland birds, the first CSU research project funded this way; two projects to assess environmental impacts of the 2019-20 Australian summer bushfires; a fisheries monitoring project in the Mekong Basin to assess impacts of hydropower projects; and further projects to increase understandings of how environmental water can be utilised to maintain ecological condition.

Our main external funding partners during 2020 were the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office (CEWO), Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE), NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI), NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (NSW DPIE), Australian Water Partnership/UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO), CRC for High Performance Soils, National Mental Health Commission, the Forestry Corporation of NSW, Hermon Slade Foundation, Murray Local Land Services, Murray Darling Basin Authority, NSW Environment Trust, IHE Delft, and the UK Darwin Initative Fund. We also were the recipients of CSU’s largest philanthropic research donation or gift, administered through the CSU Foundation Trust. The funding was made to the researchers specifically to investigate the distribution of wetland birds using innovative technology, and to then inform conservation management.

This includes $25,000 for an AGRIPARK Collaborative Research Agreement with Regional Development Australia- Riverina NSW for the Riverina Skills Audit project led by Professor Oliver Burmeister.

As well ILWS members are lead researchers for four projects (total value of $74,746) funded by the DVCRE COVID-19 Research Fund announced in May. ILWS members are also members of the research teams for another three projects under this scheme. Dr Simon Wright also received a CSU Green sustainability grant of $10,000 for a native garden for pollinators on the Bathurst campus.

In 2020 the Institute provided four Honours students with ILWS-funded scholarships of up to $3000 each for students supervised

by ILWS members and conducting research projects that align with its research themes. Additional operating funds were allocated but only two students were able to use them ($4121). The Institute also provided a total of $139,034 to members in three categories.

Through Category A: member research time support funding, a total of 1922 additional research hours was provided for eight members ($118,144). Through Category B: team research support and development funding, support was provided for two activities.($18,369) Through Category C: professional development, conference attendance and training funding, support was provided to four members. ($2521.) More grants were awarded, however, because of the travel and other restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, members were unable to utilise them. Further details on ILWS internal funding allocations are available at https://www.csu.edu.au/research/ilws/ home/for-members/resources Expenditure In 2020, total expenditure using externally funded research grants (R-code funds) by ILWS was $5.568M, of which $2.054M was on staffing ($0.962M on general staff and $1.092M on academic staff).

On-going and completed projects Major on-going projects include: • the two four-year MER (Monitoring, Evaluation and Research) projects for the Edward/Kolety-Wakool, and the Murrumbidgee river systems funded by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office • three ACIAR funded projects - the Fish Passage project in Laos (expanded in 2018 to include four additional countries of the Lower Mekong Basin); the Pakistan Groundwater project; the Xayaburi Dam project in Lao PDR; • a Community Reforestation project in Timor-Leste funded by the UK Darwin Initative Fund • and an Australian Water Partnership/UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) project in South East Asia ILWS Annual Report 2020

Research Themes & Strategic Research Leaders Since the Institute’s reaccreditation in 2017 as a CSU Research Centre, research within ILWS has been arranged around four thematic areas - Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Water, Rural and Regional Communities, and Sustainable Developmernt (International).

However, in line with the Institute’s emphasis on integrated social ecological research, research projects may sit under more than one theme and researchers may work across themes. More detailed information about the themes including research projects and activities, and related Higher Degree Research projects is available on the relevent web pages.

To further strengthen the Institute as a researcher led organisation, the Institute’s Management Advisory Team (IMAT) appointed three strategic research leaders, one for each of the “Land,” “Water” and “Society” pillars of the Institute towards the end of 2020.

The new two-year appointments, effective from November 1, were Associate Professor Dale Nimmo for “Land”; Professor Lee Baumgartner for “Water” and Associate Professor Branka Krivokapic-skoko for “Society”. The leaders’ primary responsibility is to monitor external funding opportunities and communicate these in a targeted and strategic manner to develop and enhance research activity of their theme, ILWS and the University.

Our Members At the end of 2020 the Institute had 185 members made up of 66 Full Members, 30 Associate Members, 52 Adjunct members, and 39 Higher Degree Research (HDR) students whose research topics are congruent with the Institute’s members. Included in that membership are 10 ILWS academic researchers which includes senior research fellows, post-docs and research officers.

New members in 2020 were social researcher Dr Sarah Redshaw, psychologist Dr Jessica Tout-Lyon, sustainability researcher Dr Simon Wright, spatial scientist, Dr Richard Crabbe, geospatial scientist, Dr Mobushir (Moby) Khan, marine microbial ecologist and socio-economic researcher, Dr Jessica Tout-Lyons, Indigenous health researcher Associate Professor Faye McMillan, lawyer and paramedicine researcher Dr Ruth Townsend, sports sociologist Dr Chelsea Litchfield, post-doc ecologist Dr Chris Jolly, acoustic recordings analyst Dr Michael Towsey, social marketer Dr Felicity Small, criminologist Dr Ruth Delaforce, and data mining researcher Dr Ashad Kabir. We also farewelled environmental chemist Dr Julia Howitt who passed away in April, 2020. Institute Director Associate Professor Andrew Hall was appointed Acting Director at the end of 2019 and will continue in this role until the end of 2021.

Post-graduates In 2020 we had 44 HDR students, slighlty less than the 48 in 2019. This includes our ILWS PhD scholarship recepients; two Australia Award recipients, Dwi Atminarso (who commenced in 2019) and Vu Vi An (who commenced in 2017); and an industry funded PhD scholarship recpient Joachim Bretzel, from Germany, who commenced his study in Australia in 2020.

ILWS PhD scholarship recipients Each year the Institute awards two PhD scholarships. Currently there are 10 students who are/were recipients of ILWS PhD scholarships and have not yet graduated.

Recipients in 2020 were Lauren Stoot, supervised by Professor Lee Baumgartner, ILWS Adjunct Dr Jason Thiem (NSW DPI), and Dr Gavin Butler (NSW DPI); and Leia Rogers, supervised by Dr Raf Freire and ILWS Adjunct Dr Keller Kopf (CDU).

Awards Institute Adjunct Dr Swapan Paul has been awarded the qualification of Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) by the (International) Society of Wetland Scientists based in USA. This prestigious body offers this award to those limited number of wetland practitioners who have made remarkable contributions to wetland science, practice, education, awareness and advocacy. Dr Paul is the first wetland scientist from Australia to have received this award.

Institute Adjunct Professor Martin Mallen-Cooper won the 2020 Quentin Martin Best practice-Orientated Paper Award for the discussion of “Balancing Hydropower Development and Ecological Impacts in the Mekong: Tradeoffs for Sambor Mega Dam” by Thomas B. Wild, Patrick M. Reed, Daniel P. Loucks, Martin Mallen‐Cooper, and Erland D. Jensen, published in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management.

Institute Adjunct Andy Herb from Colorado, USA, received a Society of Wetland Scientist President’s Award in June 2020.

Dr Belinda Cash was recognised for her outstanding service to the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) over many years with an AAG Distinguished Member Award at the association’s AGM, November 11.

The Institute was represented at the 2020 Engagement Australia Awards with members finalists in two categories, namely: • Professor Robyn Watts and Associate Professor Skye Wassens were finalists in the ‘Excellence in Community Engagement’ Award for their Environmental Long-Term Intervention Monitoring and Monitoring, Evaluation and Research Programs.

• Associate Professor Faye McMillan and the Djirruwang Aboriginal Mental Health Worker Education and Training Program were finalists in the Engagement Australia Award for ‘Excellence in Community Engagement, Closing the Gap’.

Institute Adjunct Professor Roy Gardner was the recipient of a Society of Wetland Scientists 40th Anniversary Award, announced at the society’s virtusal meeting, December 1-3.

Appointments Professor Lee Baumgartner and Institute Adjunct Professor Martin Mallen-Cooper were members of the Technical Advisory Group for the MDBA’s Native Fish Movement and Recovery Strategy which was finalised by the end of April 2020. More information about the strategy at https://www.mdba.gov.au/managing-water/drought-murray-darling-basin/native-fish-recovery-strategy In the wake of Australia’s bushfire crisis, Associate Professor Dale Nimmo was appointed to the Federal Government’s wildlife and threatened species bushfire recovery Expert Panel in January, 2020. The panel was chaired by the Threatened Species Commissioner Dr Sally Box. Based on the Panel’s advice on March 24 the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment published a Revised provisional list of animals required urgent management intervention following the 2019/20 bushfires. For more information go to https:// www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/bushfire-recovery/expert-panel Associate Profesor Catherine Allan was appointed to the Environmental Strategic Advisory Panel for the Winton Wetlands Committee. The panel provides strategic advice to the community-based committee that is managing the restoration of the Winton Wetlands following decommissioning of the dam and drainage of the reservoir in 2010.

Associate Professor Maree Bernoth is the CSU representative on the Standards Australia Committee for Ageing Societies (MB-027).

This group collaborates with the ISO International Committee.

Professor Lee Baumgartner was one of five academics appointed by the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) to review its Evaluation Reports the Basin Plan (2014-2019).

ILWS PhD scholarship recipient Richard McLellan is the foundation chair of the Board of the global Forest Conservation Fund, an international Swiss-based initiative which aims to decentralise conservation by empowering local communities and private sector actors to protect forest under their control.

A new MOU between ILWS and IHE-Delft (Institute for Water Education), sees Institute Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson continue in the role of Chair for the Wise Use of Wetlands for IHE-Delft, which is based in The Netherlands. The five year cost-free part-time appointment replaces the previous tri-party collaborative agreement between CSU, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and IHE-Delft.

Institute Adjunct Professor Roy Gardner has been appointed to the Friends of the Everglades’ Policy and Science Committee.

Institute Adjunct Dr Dave Pritchard, who is based in the U.K. , has been appointed to the UK Government’s Darwin Expert Committee.

He has also been appointed to the Steering Group of PLACE (People, Land, Art, Culture and Environment) in the Centre for National Parks and Protected Areas, University of Cumbria.

Associate Professor Dale Nimmo was appointed a member of the National Indigenous Australians Agency’s Independent Reference Group for the federal government’s $750M Indigenous Rangers Program (2021–28), where he will help to design the implementation of the program.

Institute Adjunct Dr Richard Loyn was relected president of a local NRM organisation in North East Victoria, Swamps, Rivers & Ranges.

Associate Professor Raf Freire was appointed to the Animal Welfare Advisory Council of NSW, a non-statutory body that provides expert independent scientific advice to the NSW Government on animal welfare matters and proposed regulation to support the delivery of the NSW Animal Welfare Action Plan.

Associate Professor Faye McMillan, as an Australian Pharmacy Council Board Member, has been appointed as the Board’s representative on the Pharmacists’ Support Service, a charity which focuses on the mental health and wellbeing of the Australian pharmacy profession.

Engagement Despite the travel restrictions and the limitations caused by the COVID I9 pandemic, LWS members have continued to engage with a wide range of external stakeholders regionally, nationally and internationally through a variety of means including academic publications; community engagement activities; conferences, seminars and workshops; public lectures and seminars; ILWS hosted/supported events; and through collaborations with partners, industry and the community as they undertake research projects and activities. During the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding travel restrictions and social distancing measures, many events that members would normal attend in person such as conferences and seminars were held virtually. Members’ engagement with the media during the year continued to be high, especially when asked for commentary and opinions around the two major news stories of the year- the summer bushfires in Eastern Australia, and the COVID 19 pandemic. The effort to capture more information about members’ and the Institute’s engagement within CSU (internal engagement) continued.

Community Engagement Most of the Institute’s community engagement is done at the regional level where members (inclduing our adjuncts) interact directly with regional communities in a number of ways including webinars and other on-line events and activities, talks, workshops, public lectures, social media surveys, and working with special interest groups, schools and other organisations. Examples in 2020 include: • The Mitta Valley Southern Bell Frog Surveys project was a small Landcare funded project undertaken by ILWS PhD student Anna Turner as a community engagement activity with the Mitta Valley Landcare group. It involved frog surveys targeting the Southern Bell frog ( Litoria raniformis) along the Mitta Mitta River, North-east Victoria, during the 2019-20 breeding season (Nov-Dec). The project kicked of with an event on November 9, 2019, organised by Dr David Hunter, DPIE, through the Saving our Species program who introduced Anna to members of the Landcare group and the aim of the project.

• Two CSU hosted public seminars, “Thinking Fish – Saving Native Fish in the Murray Darling Basin” were held at CSU’s Dubbo campus, on February 25, and at the Wagga Wagga campus, March 12. Funded by the Murray Darling Basin Authority, the seminars ILWS Annual Report 2020 6

focused on the Murray Darling Basin and the plight of native fish. Speakers included ILWS Adjunct Dr Professor Martin Mallen-Cooper at the Dubbo event, which attracted about 60 attendees; and ILWS Adjuncts Dr Craig Boys, and Luke Pearce (NSW DPI-Fisheries) at the Wagga event which attracted about 45 attendees.

• Conservation biologist and Institute Adjunct Dr Helen Waudby teamed with artist Dr Paul Peeters to produce an e-book, free to download, The Southern Bell frog Story - a colouring adventure and treasure hunt. It contains an introductory video for the resource’s two components:- a teaching resource with class activities; and an interactive presentation which contains information on frog facts, Corowa’s local frogs, local frog habitats, and threats to frogs.

• Associate Professor Dale Nimmo was one of three members of an expert panel for a free webinar “From the ashes: Australia Re-imaged” presented by The Conversation and the National Library of Australia (NLA) on June 19. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=1Psn0wJyex4 • A free on-line course developed by CSU lecturer Robin Harvey and ILWS member Dr Belinda Cash on Understanding Ageing was officially launched by the Federal Member for Indi Dr Helen Haines on July 22. The course, an initiative of the Leadership in Healthy Ageing Network is designed to increase knowledge about ageing and later life for community members and prospective students.

It follows the successful webinar “Exploring impacts of social isolation on older adults” presented by Dr Cash on April 28 which had an audience of more than 860 participants including both older adults and a wide range of professionals from coming from the health care sector, community organisations and local government. The webinar, on exploring the impacts of social distancing on older adults because of the COVID-19 restrictions, was presented by CSU and the Australian Association of Gerontology.

• Institute Adjunct Dr Richard Loyn gave a presentation in June by zoom to the Geelong Field Naturalists Club on looking for wildlife in China including the Tibetan plateau (including snow leopards and red pandas).

• Historian Associate Professor Bruce Pennay authored an on-line exhibition together with the Wodonga Historical Society to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The exhibition which focuses on the impact of the war on Wodonga and its surrounds was launched on August 15 and is accessible on the historical society’s web site at https:// historywodonga.org.au/the-impact-of-the-second-world-war-on-wodonga-and-its-surrounds/.

• Professor Max Finlayson gave a presentation on “The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands & the Gippsland Lakes” at a virtual Gippsland Lakes community workshop organised by Environmental Justice Victoria, Sept 8.

• Members of the MER Murrumbidgee team Dr Damian Michael and Gaye Bourke gave a community group presentation to the Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists via zoom on September 10.

• Dr Simon Wright, a lecturer in Sustainability and Strategy and Director of Simply Sustainable, and Institute Adjunct Ashley Bland, Managing Director of Constructive Energy, were members of a panel of local experts in the energy sector from the Bathurst region who took part in an Upstairs Startup Hub and virtual panel conversation, September 17.

• Institute Adjunct Dr Geoff Heard’s photograph of a Growling Grass Frog has been used for a commissioned mural using native Australian species in Coburg. The Moreland Council aims to reduce graffiti in areas with high tagging rates by commissioning the murals.

• As an associated event for the Museum of the Riverina’s storytelling exhibition “Care Factor- Stories from the home and hospice”, a Facebook Live online event Panel Discussion/Myth Busting: When someone dies at home, with Master of Ceremonies, Associate Professor Maree Bernoth, was held on October 7.

• Professor David Watson, an expert on mistletoes, shared his knowledge about mistletoe at two on-site workshops at Yanco and Griffith in October.

• On December 1 and 2, 2020, six workshops were held at the Western Murray Land Improvement Group centre in Barham to give about 150 students from Barham High School, Barham Primary School, Moulamein Public School, and Wakool Burraboi Public School hands-on experience of environmental science and to learn about river monitoring. The workshops, part of the community engagement activities for the MER-Edward/Kolety Wakool project, were led by Professor Robyn Watts, Dr Nicole McCasker, Dr Sha sha Liu and Roseanne Farrant from Charles Sturt University.

• Dr Stacey Jenkins is a member on the Steering Committee of Wagga City Council’s Domestic Violence Project 2650 which runs until June 2021. The project aims to educate the community on the causes of violence against women and their children, promote gender equality and respect, and challenge rigid gender roles and stereotypes.

Examples in 2020 include: Regional • Regular meetings of the Environmental Strategic Advisory Panel for the Winton Wetlands Committee, Benalla, Victoria, of which Institute Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson is chair and Dr Catherine Allan a new member.

• Associate Professor Branka Krivokapic-skoko meet with the Majors of Wagga Wagga (Greg Conkey)and Leeton (Paul Maytom) and Belinda Crain, the CEO of Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga (MCWW) on February 18-19 regarding a potential research project which would include Charles Sturt University, University of South Australia and the MCWW. The project, around exploring the impact of refugee settlement in rural/regional Australia, using Leeton and Wagga Wagga (NSW) as community case studies, has since received funding from the University of South Australia.

• Institute Adjunct Kate Charters, Chair of SEGRA (Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia) set up a series of webinars called “A Conversation for Regional Australia about COVID-19” as a forum for those who live, work and invest in regional, rural and remote Australia. The goal of the webinars was to enable regions to get a greater understanding of the issues and pool their ideas and initiatives to ride out the COVID-19 storm.

• Indigenous health researcher Associate Professor Faye McMillan was on a panel talking about creating culturally safe workplaces as part of the 7th Western NSW Health Research Network Symposium was repackaged as a combination of on-line webinars, workshops and writing groups, held from June- December.

• Members of the Edward/Kolety-Wakool environbmental flows team Professor Robyn Watts, Dr Wendy Minato and Neil Sutton (Streamology) gave presentations to the Edward/Kolety-Wakool Environmental Water Reference Group on October 13.

National • On January 22 and 23, Professor Lee Buamgartner attended a workshop led by NSW DPI with colleagues from CSIRO, the South Australian Aquatic Sciences Centre to discuss and analyse data from the fish that died in 2019 in the Lower Darling. NSW DPI has provided funding to contribute to an analysis of the data.

• Acting Director Associate Professor Andrew Hall gave a presentation on the Institute and the research it undertakes as an integrated social and ecological research centre to the Australian Government House of Representative’s Standing Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources on Friday, February 7, at the Wagga Wagga campus • Acting Director Associate Professor Andrew Hall (along with CSU’s PVC for Research and Innovation, Professor Michael Friend, and Industry Professor Niall Blair) met with the interim One Basin CRC leadership in Sydney on February 26. Follow up discussions have been held with Geoff Cockfield on the fit for ILWS members within the Adaptation Solutions Program. Involvement in a Smart Regions CRC bid is also currently being considered.

• February 27-28, Institute Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson, along with Adjuncts Dr Gavin Rees and Dr Paul McInerney participated in a workshop, organised by CSIRO Land & Water, Canberra, on “Dynamic ecosystem modelling of Gunbower-Koondrook-Perricoota Forest icon site.”

• Acting Director Associate Professor Andrew Hall and Professor Lee Baumgartner had a meeting with the Federal Minister for the Environment Hon Sussan Ley in Albury on Monday March 9 where they discussed a range of issues impacting the Environment Portfolio and the Farrer electorate.

• ILWS PhD student Richard McLellan mounted a campaign to have the spectacular Western Australian wheatbelt species llyarrie, Eucalptus erythrocorys voted Eucalypt of the Year on National Eucalypt Day, March 23….and it worked! Eucalypt Australia congratulated Richard for single-handedly leading the strongest campaign for the title that it had seen yet.

• In lieu of the Soil CRC Participants Conference, which was to be held in March, the Soil CRC held a series of five webinars from March 30 to April 8 for each of its Programs plus one for its special project “Managing soils for high performance after drought”. Associate Professor Catherine Allan, who heads Program One, Investing in high performance soils, presented an overview of the program for the webinar on March 30. Dr Nick Pawsey then gave a presentation on “Financially rewarding farmers for soil management” related to the project he leads - Collaborative approaches to Innovation.

• ILWS PhD student Richard McLellan gave a number of presentations on his Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) research during the year including for a Bush Heritage webinar “Resilience and Hope in Uncertain Times”, April 23; to Bush Heritage Australia supporters at Hamelin Station Reserve in September on “The ecological functional significance of hemiparasitic plants in a warming world” and to the Western Australian Wildflower Society on October 13 in Subiaco. He also went to Parliament House in Perth August 19 to speak with Chris Tallentire, MLA, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Forests, Forestry, Innovation and ICT, Science, Youth, Hon. Dave Kelly MP, about sandalwood becoming extinct in the wild in Western Australia. Then, at the invitation of the WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), he spent two weeks late 2020 studying sandalwood populations on Wirruwana (Dirk Hartog Island) with a view to conducting a ‘before and after’ analysis of sandalwood populations on the island to coincide with the planned translocation of critically endangered woylies /brush-tailed bettongs (Betongia penicillata) to the island in 2022.

• Professor David Watson gave a webinar presentation on the Australian Acoustic Observatory for SWIFT (State Wide Integrated Flora and Fauna Teams for Victoria and south-eastern Australia ) April 23.

• For the second year in a row, members of the MER-Murrumbidgee team (Dr Damian Michael, Associate Professor Skye Wassens and Gaye Bourke) have produced a financial year calendar (2020-2021) to showcase the work that is being done and the benefits of environmental watering. Five hundred copies of the calendar were printed and distributed to project partners and stakeholders, community groups, industry groups, Indigenous groups, and the CSU Research Office.

• Following publication of a forward-thinking paper co-authored by Dr Maggie Watson and Professor David Watson on PostAnthropocene Conservation Professor Watson was invited to given an online seminar talk to UNSW, June 4.

• Former ILWS PhD student Dr Sam Strong, who now works for DELWP and is an Institute Adjunct, gave an-line presentation on “Social Ecological Recovery. Our bushfire reality: Exploring sense-making myths,” based on her PhD research findings at an on-line Nature & Health- Research, Practice and Policy Symposium presented by the the Association of Australian Bush Adventure Therapy with partners the University of Tasmania and Griffith University on June 16.

• Institute Adjunct and historian Professor Bruce Pennay was a panelist for an on-line webinar hosted by political journalist, Annabel Crabb, and organised by the National Library of Australia to launch “Trove the new chapter” on June 26. Bruce spoke about why it was important for regional history to have the resources on Trove accessible nation-wide.

• As part of a visit by Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s Executive Leadership Team to the University’s Wagga Wagga campus on July 2, ILWS researchers took part (by Zoom) in a “research showcase” where Professor Lee Baumgartner spoke about fisheries research conducted by ILWS with a focus on the Murray-Darling Basin, and Associate Professor Skye Wassens on CEWO’s the Monitoring, Evaluation and Research program for Murrumbidgee river system which she leads.

• Professor David Watson gave a webinar on “Mistletoes in horticulture, Towards best-practice management” to the Australian Pecan Association on September 10.

• Professor Robyn Watts and Neil Sutton (Streamology) gave a webinar to river operators on September 10 on the results of bank erosion research. Thirty people attended including representatives from the MDBA river operations, Murray LLS, Water NSW and CEWO. • Six members of the Edward/Kolety-Wakool environmental flows team (Professor Robyn Watts, Dr Nicole McCasker, Dr Jason Thiem, Dr Xiaoying Liu, Andre Siebers, Meaghan Duncan) attended the MER Annual Forum, September 16-17, where they gave presentations to federal and State water managers on day 2 of the forum. The forum was on-line but interactive with breakout discussion groups for each theme as well as plenary sessions. Associate Professor Skye Wassens, who leads the Murrumbidgee team also attended and gave a presentation on behalf of her team.

• NSW DPI have released a video “Making more fish” featuring Dr Nicole McCasker, Paul Childs. Senior Environmental Water Manager, NSW DPIE, and recreational fisher Wayne McPherson, Leeton Bidgee Classic Fishing Competition. https://www.environment.nsw.gov. au/news/making-more-fish • A webinar “Building a customer focused marketing and communication strategy for your NDIS business COVID-19 and beyond” was presented by the Federal Government’s Boosting the Local Care Workforce Program and CSU staff to South Australian disability support services on September 18. Presenters from CSU were ILWS member Dr Jodie Kleinschafer, (School of Management and Marketing) Victoria Erskine (School of Communications) and Kath Attree, School of Management and Marketing. Dr Kleinschafer led a research project, Exploring the transition to the NDIS in the Western NSW region: Service provider and carer perspectives, from 2017-2019. More than 50 people attended the webinar. The webinar was well-received with additional webinars conducted in other states / territories later in the year.

• Institute Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson, together with Jason Alexandra, gave a presentation on “Floods after bushfires: rapid responses for reducing impacts of sediments, ash and nutrient slugs” as part of the River Basin Management Society’s one day River Fest to celebrate “Waterways in our Communities,” September 29.

• Dr Belinda Cash was invited by the Municipal Association of Victoria to present at its Positive Ageing Network meeting on October 21 which was attended by 107 government and local council representatives. Her presentation was about “Strategies for working with older adults as restrictions lift and we return to a “post-COVID normal”.

• Professor Lee Baumgartner and ILWS Adjunct Dr Martin Mallen-Cooper were invited to NSW Parliament House, Sydney on October 29 as expert witnesses to the NSW government inquiry into the “rationale for, and impacts of, new dams and water infrastructure in NSW.” This was the first of three hearings with the committee scheduled to hand down their findings in early 2021. “This was a significant opportunity for CSU/ILWS to influence the future of dam construction in NSW by speaking directly to upper and lower house politicians about this important water-related issue; of being able to translate university research into policy outcomes,” says Professor Baumgartner.

• Dr Stacey Jenkins was a member of the Program Advisory Committee (of which Professor Russell Roberts is chair) for the Mental Health Workplace Symposium, held virtually November 4-5, and has been invited to continue in this role in 2021. Professor Russell Roberts is the Chair of the Committee. Russell chaired a session on “How to be an agile workplace in times of crisis Part 2: natural disaster disruptors.” He also gave a presentation on “The mental health impacts on police and paramedics due to COVID-19.”

• Dr Emma Colvin, together with Dr Lizzie Knight (Victoria University) and Edward Kriletich (Griffith University), presented a webinar “Supporting the career information needs of young people from out of home care environments” as part of the CICA (Career Industry Council of Australia) Australian Research Series, on November 10.

• The Doctors Reform Society invited Professor Manohar Pawar to speak on “COVID, Social Determinants of Health and non-COVID health outcomes” at its annual meeting (webinar) on November 15, 2020.

• Dr Jamie Turner gave a presentation on “Arboreal folivores in the heat” looking at how heatwaves may impact arboreal marsupial folivores (the koala and some pseudocheirid and phalangerid possums and allies) at the virtual Australian Mammal Society Conference, November 17-18. Also presenting at the conference was ILWS Adjunct Dr Helen Waudby who gave a talk on on “Population connectivity of southern Ningaui (Ningaui yvonneae) in the Scotia Mallee region, NSW. • In response to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry & Environment (DPIE) invitation for public feedback to its draft Social Impact Assessment Guideline and Technical Supplement in November 2020, Dr Andrew Manning reviewed the draft policy and lodged a submission under the auspice of the ILWS. The key points raised were to encourage methodological flexibility and to align the technical assessment for an SIA to the UN Sustainable Development Goals framework.

• Dr Belinda Cash and Robin Harvey ran an interactive online workshop on “Building knowledge and practice in a climate of rapid change” as part of the virtual Australian Association of Gerontology national conference, November 18-20. The workshop was in recognition of the significant climate of change experienced during 2019 and 2020 which has altered life and work for most Australians as they responded to unprecedented bushfires, a global pandemic and economic crises. The rate of change saw governments, organisations, professionals and individuals all required to respond rapidly to novel challenges in unfamiliar contexts.

Older adults have been particularly impacted by government and community responses to the coronavirus pandemic. The interactive workshop explored the potential of individuals and organisations to respond rapidly to such changing contexts and crises. The session brought together around 30 practitioners, academics, health service managers and policy advisors involved in work with older Australians.

• As part of CSU’s partnership with the Women’s Agenda, Dr Stacey Jenkins was one of three panel members for its webinar on burnout titled: “Live chat: The Burnout Year. Key tips for getting through”, held November 23.

• The Ecological Society of Australia 60th Anniversary Conference was held on-line, November 30- December 4 with the theme “Understanding Ecological Extremes: Mechanisms of Resilience and Recovery.” ILWS presenters (or people associated with ILWS projects) were: Dr Jodi Price: Herbivore exclusion effects on plant diversity depend on rainfall and evolutionary history; Michael Callan, founding director, Habitech Pty ltd: Thinking outside the box: a novel nest box design with improved thermal properties; ILWS PhD student Richard Segal: Small-scale species distribution model identifies restricted breeding habitat for an endemic island bird; ILWS PhD student Richard McLellan - Parasitic plants as foci for facilitation: Insights from Australia’s rangeland ecosystems; and ILWS Adjunct Dr Swapan Paul, Manager Wetlands - SOPA Mangrove rehabilitation requires multifactorial and multidimensional thinking • ILWS Adjuncts’ participation in the Australian Freshwater Sciences Society’s 2020 national virtual conference on December 8 -10 included ILWS Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson who gave a plenary talk on “A thread of connectivity – meandering through wetland research, conservation practice, community participation, international assessments, policy and research editing to end up with the rights of wetlands”; Dr Paul McInerney: Mesoconsumer growth and selective integration of fatty acids; implications for apex predators in lowland river food webs; Lorraine Hardwick: Insights in aspects of ecosystem productivity in Mulwaree Chain-of Ponds, a rare geomorphic relic; and Dr Yoshi Kobayashi: Stream metabolism in the Murrumbidgee River. Also former ILWS PhD student Dr Amelia Walcott gave a presentation on: Frog responses to flows in the Gwydir Wetlands System, in the Northern Murray-Darling Basin, 2014 to 2019.

International • Dr Richard Culas, a member of the Pakistan Groundwater research team, gave a seminar on “Improving water productivity to enhance agriculture and farming livelihoods” at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, January 9.

• Professor Lee Baumgartner was one of 120 people who attended the AWP (Australian Water Partnership) Partners Workshop in Sydney, February 5 to 6. The workshop was attended by representatives from 71 of AWP’s partner organisations - one-third of all AWP Partners- based in Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Nepal, Italy, including AWP staff, DFAT Canberra and DFAT Posts from Bangkok and Laos.The workshop’s theme was “Partnering to address water security in the IndoPacific region.” Professor Baumgartner participated in two small table discussions on “Water security and sustainable hydropower” and “Water Security and Bushfire Management.”

• Institute Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson, the former Director of the Institute, and a world reknown wetland ecologist, continued to engage with international colleagues during the year. Before the COVID-19 lockdowns he was in Middleton, Wisconsin, U.S., February 18 to 19, to attend and chair the Executive Board and Board of Directors meetings of the Society of Wetland Scientists of which he was President until June. ILWS adjunct Dr Matt Simpson also participated, representing the Society’s Ramsar special interest section. While there Professor Finlayson met with Dr Richard Beilfuss, CEO of the International Crane Foundation to which Professor Finlayson is an expert advisor. Most of his other international engagement activities during the year then had to be conducted online. They included: -in February, a skype conference with adjuncts Professor Nick Davidson, Dr Rob McInnes and Dr Matt Simpson, to plan a further version of the citizen science assessment of the state of the world’s wetlands; -a pre-recorded plenary talk on ‘Temporary wetlands within the context of the Global Wetland Outlook’ for a conference on Temporary Wetlands Future in Drylands Under Projected Climate Change Scenario, in Baeza, Spain, March 9-11 -a pre-recorded talk (presented on May 25) on climate change and wetlands for the European Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists’ virtual seminar series co-ordinated by Institute Adjunct Dr Matt Simpson -in July, a webinar on Wetlands and Global Climate Change to the IHE Master course module Wetlands for Livelihoods and Conservations, followed by an assessment of the student project report by webinar -a talk on “Ramsar framework for wetland inventory” on four occasions to different audiences on October 19, 20 and 21 as part of the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands’ National Wetlands Inventories Training Webinars series.

-the opening plenary talk on “The Second Warning to Humanity: Providing a Context for Wetland Management & Policy” at the National Wetlands Indaba – A Virtual Celebration of Wetland Biodiversity conference on October 28. The conference was hosted by the South African Wetlands Society.

-presentation, along with Institute Adjunct Dr Swapan Paul at the Inaugural Sydney Wetland Institute (SWI) webinar on October 29. The aim of the forum was to celebrate and share 20 years of Wetland Education and Training (WET) at Sydney Olympic Park; to share the lessons learnt and to look to the future of the institute and how it could serve the sector through webinars, online workshops and professional networking events. The webinar was the launch of the 12 month pilot phase for the institute which aims to further expand and diversify the WET program to meet industry needs.

- a presentation at a session on ‘After 50 years of ups and downs, what is needed for international conservation to become a relevant force for the challenges of the future?’ at the Society of Wetland Scientists’ 2020 virtual meeting, “Wetland Connections over 40 years” December 1-3. Other ILWS Adjuncts who presented in that session were Dr Matthew Simpson, Professor Nick Davidson and Associate Professor Rob McInness. Other ILWS Adjuncts who gave presentations were Dr Ritesh Kumar, from Wetlands International South Asia, a plenary speaker who spoke on ‘Wetlands wise use: Reframing for multiple worldviews’; and Dr Swapan Paul on ‘Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on wetland education: Overcoming challenges and making connections using online and distance learning.’

• From February 25 to March 3, research team members – Professor Lee Baumgartner, Jarrod McPherson and Karl Pomorin, from KarlTek Pty Ltd - were in Laos at the Xayaburi run of river hydropower project, to undertake their first major field trip which involved running intensive training workshops. While there they were joined by Dr Alan Temple from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Between the four they ran training workshops on electrofishing and PIT tagging; tagged and released some fish into the Mekong River; and began tag retention trials at the a fish research centre which has been constructed at the site. – a combination of Xayaburi employees and Lao government officials - were to give the in-country partners the skills required for the project. On October 5, members of the project team project team hosted the Australian Ambassador to Lao PDR, Jean BernardCurrasco’s visit to the project site, the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant. The trip was coordinated between ILWS and the Australian Embassy in collaboration with research partner Xayaburi Power Company Limited. Australia (through the DFAT/ACIAR funded project) is supporting independent monitoring of the dam’s fish passage facilities. During the visit, the Ambassador released fish implanted with PIT tags (microchips) that will help monitor their migration progress. The visit was well promoted through ACIAR’s, the Australian Embassy’s, the power company’s and CSU’s social media channels. The ambassador was accompanied by officers from ACIAR (Dulce Simmanivong and Khampheng Mounmeuangxam), ILWS adjunct Garry Thorncraft and Senior Research Fellow Dr Wayne Robinson (who are both based in Laos) along with our research collaborators from Xayaburi Power Company Limited, National University of Laos and Living Aquatic Resources Research Centre (Lao government agency).

• Institute Adjunct and wetlands law expert Professor Royal Gardner, the Director of the Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy, Stetson University College of Law, in Florida in the U.S. continues to keep the Institute informed of his various engagement activities which, in 2020, included presenting at the Ecological Restoration Business Association’s 2020 Policy Conference in Washington DC on March 5; ‘The Navigable Waters Protection Rule: Highlights and Initial Take-Aways,’ Association of State Wetland Managers Webinar, March 25; the Welcoming Remarks, 20th International Wildlife Law Conference, April 1; on ‘POTUS, SCOTUS, and WOTUS: The Clean Water Act in the Trump Era’, University of Florida’s Water, Wetlands and Watersheds Seminar Series, April 8 and again (as a plenary presentation by video) as part of the Society for Freshwater Science’s Summer of Science program, July 2; to the Georgia Environmental Restoration Association in July); to the National Ecosystem and Mitigation Banking Conference in August about how the Trump administration’s policies will affect the environmental restoration industry. In September, he was a participant on a sciencepolicy panel at the American Fisheries Society’s Virtual Annual Meeting. In October, PBS NOVA Now’s podcast on “Science in the courtroom” featured the amici brief that he co-wrote on behalf of aquatic scientists and scientific societies in the U.S. Supreme Court case of County of Maui v. Hawaii Wildlife Fund. He has continued to express his concerns about issues around the (U.S) Clean Water Act with on-line presentations for a Florida Conservation Voters Facebook Live event in October 2020 and the University of Georgia River Basin Centre Symposium in November 2020. In December, 2020, on behalf of nine scientific societies opposing the Trump administration’s efforts to redefine which waters are protected by the Clean Water Act, he filed in a U.S. District Court an amici brief: https://www.sws.org/2020/12/21/sws-joins-other-societies-in-filing-amici-brief-in-district-of-massachusetts/ He also gave on-line presentations about the role of scientific advisory bodies in the context of human health and zoonotic diseases at the University of Soongsil’s 10th Godang International Conference on Law (Republic of Korea) in November, 2020, and at a seminar organized by the University of Barcelona Faculty of Law in December, 2020. Professor Gardner is a member of the Management Working Group of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

• Institute Adjunct Kent Hortle is a co-author of a report for the Don Sahong Power Company in Lao PDR on the achievements of the Don Sahong Fisheries Management Committee (DSFMC) established to improve fisheries management at Khone Falls in southern Laos. The committee comprises Lao government officials, local villagers and leaders of three village groups in the Khong District.The power company constructed a hydropower plant on the Sahong Channel at the falls from 2016 to mid 2019.

• Professor Manohar Pawar, President of the International Consortium for Social Development, continued to be in demand to speak (online) at international conferences and meetings. During 2020 he was invited by the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology to give a lecture for an international webinar on ‘Applied Social Psychology: Potential to flourish’, July 16; by the the Indonesian Association of Social Development to deliver a keynote speech at its annual general body meeting on ‘Development of Social Development Studies in Higher Education in Indonesia’, August 26-27; by Bankura University, Department of Social Work, West Bengal, India to give a presentation on ‘Responses to COVID-19 Pandemic and the Social Work Profession’ at an International Webinar on Pandemic and Social Work Profession, August 28-29; by Visa-Bharati University, Department of Social Work, West Bengal, India, to introduce the university’s third webinar series, for a presentation on ‘Child marriage during pandemic and coping skills’, October 21; to speak as one of the panel speakers to discuss the justifications for the proposed National Council for Social Work (Education and Practice) Bill, 2020, India, organised by the Department of Social Work, Shantiniketan, West Bengal, India, November 26, 2020; and by the Department of Social Work and Psychology, University of Gävle, Sweden, to speak and take part in a panel discussion at an international webinar for the University’s International Migrants Day Program, December 18.

• ILWS researchers are members of the InFish Network, a global network of people who focus on inland fisheries. Because of the interest in the impact on fish from the Australian summer bushfires, Professor Lee Baumgartner was asked to moderate a series of talks highlighting some of the issues on August 24. Speakers from the Institute were Dr Katie Doyle (ILWS): Bushfires and fish impacts in North East Victoria; and Adjunct Luke Pearce (ILWS Adjunct and NSW DPI-Fisheries): Maccas in the Mannus; impacts of bushfires on threatened Macquarie perch.

• Dr Zhenquan (Jan) Li was invited to give a keynote presentation on “A new mesh generation technique for fluid flow” at the at International conference on recent trends in applied mathematical sciences, September 26-27. The conference was funded by the Arunai International Research Foundation.

• Professor Lee Baumgartner and PhD student Dwi Atminarso took part (on-line) in what was essentially a research project planning workshop between the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the Indonesian Department of Public Works and Housing for the Modernising irrigated agriculture to protect and restore aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem services in SE Asia project funded by the Australian Water Partnership/UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN FAO) on October 5. The “Workshop on Water Resources Management that Supports the Protection of Aquatic Biodiversity for Sustainable Development” was held in Palembang, Indonesia. It was organised by project partners, the South East Asian Fisheries Development Centre (SEAFDEC) / Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) and Research Institute for Fisheries and Fisheries Extension (BRPPUPP). Also in attendance were Perjaya fishermen representatives.

• On October 14, at the invitation of the Director General of Capture Fisheries, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia, PhD student Dwi Atminarso gave an on-line presentation on how fishways could be included in Indonesia’s eel fishery management plan.

The meeting was important to gain public response and awareness regarding the eel fishery. A draft plan has almost been finalized with maintaining migration pathways of paramount importance.

• A three-part webinar series, Motivation and Ability (MOTA) Framework: Decision Support for Strategic Planning and Implementation, organised by IHE Delft, has been published on its web site. The aim of the webinars is to introduce the MOTA framework; discuss its application and similar methods; and propose an agenda for further work. MOTA is a tool being used by ILWS researchers for the new major project- Translating fish passage research outcomes into policy and legislation across South East Asia.

For Webinar 1 (October 21) Dr John Conallin gave a talk (on behalf of Professor Lee Baumgartner) on “Integrating inland fisheries into irrigated landscapes to meet development goals: Aspirations for MOTA as tool for better implementation of our programs”; and another on “MOTA the front end. The need for a strategic context analysis and understanding your situation before project implementation”. The extensive MOTA team from ILWS includes Professor Lee Baumgartner, Dr John Conallin, Dr Wayne Robinson, Dr Nathan Ning, Dr Jen Bond, Dr Nick Pawsey, ILWS Adjunct Garry Thorncraft, and Hannah McPherson (consultant). The Institute, through the ACIAR project, is one of the webinars’ financial supporters.

• Following an interview on Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat program in September where he discussed developments in contemporary Fijian politics, Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan was invited by the United Nations to deliver a paper on pacific politics to staff of its Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations in New York and Suva on October 22.

• For World Fish Migration Day on October 24, Dr John Conallin took part in an event organised by the Myanmar Department of Fisheries - “Migratory Fish and Free-flowing Rivers”. The aim of the on-line event was to raise awareness on the importance of free-flowing rivers for productive fisheries with decision makers, civic society organisations and development organisations within Myanmar. Dr Conallin spoke on “Two species on the move: Hilsa Shad and Pangas Catfish” before taking part in a panel discussion on Fish Migration in Myanmar.

• Professor Lee Baumgartner gave an on-line seminar to an international audience on “Overcoming river development challenges and sustaining productive fisheries in South East Asia using fish passage technology” as part of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) FI Seminar series on October 28.

• As part of two ILWS projects in Myanmar on fish migration – the Quantifying biophysical and community impacts of improved fish passage in Lao PDR and Myanmar, and the Delta Flows: The Role that Delta’s play in sustaining basin-scale fisheries in the Mekong and Irrawaddy Rivers projects- Professor Lee Baumgartner, Dr John Conallin and PhD student Vu Vi An have contributed to a short fish migration animation movie “Fish Heroes of Myanmar” developed with WWF-Myanmar which tells the story about the importance of fish migrations in Myanmar. https://vimeo.com/channels/pausecafe/472513464 • Dr Lalantha Senevirathna was an active participant at the virtual 13th international conference on challenges in environmental science & engineering (CESE 2020) November 7-8, 2020. As well as giving an oral and poster presentation, he also contributed as an expert resource person for the conference and chaired a session. His two presentations were based on the findings from the research project Long term prediction of PFAS profile in the soil and its possible pathway into groundwater (a case study).

• ILWS Adjunct Tim Marsden spoke on “Fish passage through a cone fishway on the Stung Pusat river a major tributary of the Tonlé Sap lake, Cambodia” at the 23rd International Riversymposium, November 9-12, held virtually.

• Two virtual seminars that highlighted the outcomes of work undertaken over the past two years in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand by members of the Fish Passage research team were presented by the Institute’s in-country partners, November 15 and 25 with ILWS team members participating.The Laos, Thailand and Myanmar teams presented on the 15th; the teams from Vietnam and Cambodia on the 25th.The sessions were recorded.

• Dr Andrea Crampton and Dr Angela Ragusa attended (virtually) the Eighth International Conference on Environment, Pollution & Prevention (ICEPP), December 3-5, where they presented two co-authored conference papers on research examining environmental sustainability literacy and behaviours in response to air pollution, and on waste disposal and plastic consumption awareness and actions.

• The Pacific Paravet Training Project, which is funded by the Australian Government’s Centre for Health Security (DFAT) and led by Associate Professor Andrew Peters, hosted a series of online Knowledge Exchange Sessions in mid-December.

Media Engagement Our members regularly engage with traditional and social media.

In 2020 CSU Media issued 72 media releases and Opinion Pieces featuring our members on a wide range of topics from all our thematic research areas. This more than doubles the number in 2019 (33) and is a very big increase over previous years. This reflects both an increased interest by the media in the work and views of our researchers, particularly around environmental, wildlife health, human health, and political and economic issues and an increased willingness by our members to engage more with the media. All releases are accessible on the web pages at https://www.csu.edu.au/research/ilws/news/media-releases-2 Our members were particularly sought by the media for expert comment on the Australian bushfires over the summer of 2019/2020, including their impact on our waterways and wildlife. In the first three weeks of January 2020 CSU recorded more than 350 media hits related to the buishfire crisis, the majority of which came from media interviews and commentaries provided by ILWS members. Then, with global COVID-19 pandemic, our members were again sought for, and gave, their expert opinions.

Our members are increasingly active in the Commentary space, writing Opinion Pieces and articles for on-line news services such as The Conversation, CSU News Opinion, and The Policy Space with 47 commentaries (in 2019 that number was 31) covering a range of topics including the Australian bushfires and its impacts; impacts of COVID-19; Indigenous rights and representation; shortages of ‘tradies’ in regional Australia; impacts of LaNina; regional growth; issues around ageing; mental health; and workplace culture..

The increased interest from the media is also reflected in the increased number of “Media hits”, based on the information provided by CSU’s media monitoring service, which we’ve had. These are recorded in the Institute’s In the News web pages at https://www.csu.edu.

Expert commentary was provided by members from various disciplines including ecologists Associate Professor Dale Nimmo, Associate Professor Andrew Peters, Professor David Watson, Professor Lee Baumgartner, Dr Luis Silva, Dr Katie Doyle, Professor Max Finlayson, social researchers Dr Belinda Cash, and Dr John Rafferty; spatial scientist Associate Professor Andrew Hall and political commentator Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan. Associate Professor Dale Nimmo was a member of a team which compiled a report for WWF report which estimated that 3 billion animals had been affected by the bushfires.

The report Three billion animals affected is a true measure of effect of Australian bushfires generated much media interest both national and internationally. Institute Adjunct Luke Pearce from NSW DPI featured in a story on ABC TV News on the relocation of Macquarie Perch saved from the aftermath of the bushfires. Members’ interviews, commentaries etc have resulted in the largest number of media engagements in the Institute’s history around a specific issue.

• a forward thinking paper written by Dr Maggie Watson and Professor David Watson on Post-Anthropocene Conservation, which was published in the leading international ecological journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution. The paper, which looks at a world without humans and what we can do now to maximise life after we are gone, has generated a lot of interest and discussion. It also resulted in a Feature Article written by Michael Gross in the editorial magazine section of the prestigious journal Current Biology, published January 2020.

• various perspectives around COVID-19. Dr Andrew Peters, as a wildlife health expert, spoke on possible causes of the virus including large scale ecological disruption which led to his being a panellist on the ABC’s The Drum, a live TV news interview with Channel NewsAsia and an article in Australian Geographic. Others in the media included Dr Belinda Cash, on the impacts of social isolation caused by COVID-19 restrictions on older adults; Associate Professor Maree Bernoth about the situation in aged care facilities initially, then in response to the the number of outbreaks and deaths in the aged care sector in Victoria, the Royal Commission into that, and the shortage of nurses in the aged care sector (interviews for ABC Statewide Drive, ABC Weekend breakfast); economist Professor Kevin Parton about why people stockpiled toilet paper; regular on-going political commentary from Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan; Dr Stacey Jenkins on workers’ health and safety amid COVID-19; Professor John Hicks on impacts on regional economies; Professor Lee Baumgartner and Dr Katie Doyle on differing restrictions on recreational fishing; Associate Professor Rachel Whitsed on the impacts of the NSW/Victoria border closure from a spatial perspective; Professor Russel Roberts on a new project to look at the effects of dealing with a pandemic and the impacts on the mental health of front line workers; and Associate Professor Faye McMillan on how Indigineous communities have fared during COVID-19.

• a world-first report on migratory fish declines, co-authored by Professor Lee Baumgartner. As part of the coverage Lee was featured in National Geographic who had asked for comment specifically on the situation in Australia (ash from wildfires killing fish and the drought that led the Darling River to dry up killing millions of fish). Charles Sturt expert co-authors world-first report on migratory fish declines The report found that migratory freshwater fish populations have declined globally by an average of 76 per cent between 1970 and 2016. The interest inthe fish kill in the Darling River continued with a report by co-authored by Institute Adjunct Dr Martin Mallen-Cooper being picked up by The Land which resulted in ABC regional radio interviews.

• as COVID-19 dragged on, stories to do with Australian wildlife got particularly good uptake from media. They included two seperate stories on snakes, one on Dr Damian Michael’s discovery of endangered a population of endangered grey snakes in the Murrumbidgee which resulted in a story in ABC On-line News, which then led to radio interviews aired in regional NSW and stories in regional media.

The media’s interest in snakes continued with an article in The Conversation written by Dr Damian Michael, Professor Dale Nimmo and Associate Professor Skye Wassens Does Australia really have the deadliest snakes? We debunk six common myths, being picked up by international and regional media with Dr Michael then doing lots of radio interviews. New ILWS post-doc Dr Chris Jolly, who is a snake-catcher, was on ABC Darwin and ABC Alice Springs talkuing about human and snake interactions. Other wildlife stories with good update were on why magpies swoop (Dr Melanie Massaro), and one about a new patented design for plastic nest boxes that have been developed using high tech 3D printing technology certainly piqued the media’s interest. The boxes are the outcome of a project, funded by a CSU Green research sustainability grant, where Professor David Watson’s honours student Mick Callan trialled a range of different construction methods. It is hoped that commercial production of the next boxes will help the millions of Australian wildlife displaced by the bushfires last summer. On April 2, 2020 Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan recorded his 500th radio interview as an independent political commentator • D r Melanie Massaro’s research on the Lord Howe currawong and the effects of a rodent eradication program which was published in Science magazine, resulted in regional and national ABC radio interviews and a story in Australian Geographic published in January, 2020 • A report co-authored by Institute Adjunct Dr Martin Mallen-Cooper has found that water storage and diversions were the main cause of the Darling’s low flows. • And, as happens in most years, the media were keen to run a “mistletoe story” for Christmas from our resident mistletoe expert Professor David Watson. This year the uptake was impressive, and international, with a feature story “The Biology of Mistletoe” in the Smithsonian Magazine , December 23, and, following the timely release of a paper by David in the American Naturalist, an article in The New York Times “How did mistletoe get into the treetops” on Christmas Eve. Both stories did the rounds and were republished by other media. Professor Watson also did radio interviews for ABC Hobart, and ABC Goulburn Murray and Shepparton.

Social media ILWS has three social media channels, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Regular Facebook and Twitter posts are used to promote awareness of researchers’ expertise and to position the Institute. The number of Facebook followers increased in 2020. At the end of 2019 it was around 1350-1400. However popular posts in January 2020 pushed that number up to 1500. At the end of December 31 we had 1574 Facebook followers. The number of Twitter followers @ilwscsu also increased, up from 701 at the end of 2019 to 786 by of December 2020. Our YouTube video channel is used primarily as our video library and is not a main engagement tool. Recordings of presentations for Social Sciences week were uploaded in 2020.

In the last few months of 2020 a number of research surveys were promoted on our social media channels. They were “Community wildlife health surveillance system in the Riverina” for a project undertaken by Associate Professor Andrew Peters and Dr John Rafferty; Associate Professor Peter Simmons’ work on “Riding a bike in regional NSW, a survey for riders and non-riders”; and an honours project

by Simone Maree Hyde exploring the four day working week and how regional organisations are addressing employee wellbeing. Using both paid and unpaid promotions the posts form part of the strategies used by researchers to get responses. Consequently our top Facebook post in December was promoting the regional bike surveys (assisted to achieve great shares and reach by the offer to go into the draw to win one of 5 x $100 pre paid visa cards). The posts reached a total of 51,990 people and were shared over 1000 times. The surveys were also promoted on Twitter with one post in November on the wildlife survey having 796 impressions, and, another post in December, having 470 impressions.

On June 4, 2020 Associate Professor Paul Humphries achieved a long-held ambition to record a series of interviews with researchers in the field of freshwater science with the launch of his YouTube channel Rheophilia. He has uploaded five interviews to date, including with ILWS Adjunct Dr Gavin Rees, microbiologist and food-web enthusiast, from CSIRO’s Land & Water and invertebrate taxonomist, ecologist and geomorphologist Dr Brian Timms. Subscribe to his channel to keep informed of his new interviews.

Charles Sturt Social Media team has created a video to promote research on the Theme Life Below Water as the University had scored in the top 40 universities in the world for ‘Life Below Water’ in the Times Higher Education. The resulting video Explore Our World-leading Research In Life Below Water features some of our researchers and video of the David Mitchell wetlands on the Albury campus, and promotes the work we do.The video was produced with Sustainability at Charles Sturt.

Facebook Engagement and post reach can vary widely with sometimes very unexpected popularity. Facebook posts that continue to attract good interest are the posts on our visitors, HDR and honours students which can often reach 400-600 people. The stories over the summer of 2019/2020 on the impacts of the bushfires on wildlife and fish reached, on average, between 300-400 people. (The usual reach is generally between 100-200.) Popular posts during the year were: • A CSU news story (January 8) by Associate Professor Dale Nimmo on how animals survive bushfires, reached 1249 people.

• PhD student Mitch Cowan @CowanMitch getting his honours paper accepted in @ConservationSP reached over 2090 people with 374 reactions, comments and shares.

• Adjunct Dr Helen Waudby’s co-authored colouring adventure book reached 1842 people, and 80 reactions, comments and shares.

• A request by honours student Krystal Dacey for people to do a short survey on the behaviour of lost persons in the bush reached 3,538 people with 368 engagements.

• Sharing of photos of the Murrumbidgee MER team’s annual waterbird survey, including an image Dr Damian Michael checking out a red belly black snake on the road, reached 483 people with 89 engagements • Our promotion of the “RiverDialogue:Rivers on Fire Forum” that ILWS partnered with reached 847 people, with 67 engagements • Promotion of the Sloane’s froglet teaching and learning teaching resources developed by Dr Alaxandra Knight and the Corowa Landcare group reached 478 people with 40 engagements.

Twitter Top Tweets during the year included: • In January with 3649 impressions, 68 engagements, 34 link clicks ‘As Australia battles devastating bushfires, five Australian researchers, including Institute researcher A/Prof Dale Nimmo look at some of the long-term implications for ecosystems.’

• In February tweet ‘Drs Luiz Silva & Katie Doyle, freshwater fish scientists at ILWS, have now documented 14 sites where ash-related fish kills occurred across south-eastern Australia in recent months’, 2311 impressions and 45 engagements.

• In March post on ‘B&Bs for the birds and bees in your urban garden @D0CT0RDave shares climate refugees might need help in your garden’, 1995 impressions and 51 engagements.

• In April, the sad news of Dr Julia Howitt’s passing, with 3841 impressions and 109 engagements.

• In June the promotion of the free online webinar “From the Ashes: Australia Reimagined” with Dale Nimmo on the panel of presenters had 1,359 impressions, and 31 engagements ILWS Annual Report 2020

• In August a post asking people to do a survey on experiences of being lost in the bush had 2,281 impressions and 55 engagements • In September a post congratulating Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan on his recent CSU senior research fellowship achievements had 688 impressions and 10 engagements.

• In November our ILWS on-line conference “Research for a changing world” was the main feature of our tweets. The top tweet for the conference presenters saw @CowanMitch presenting on spatial ecology and habitat selection for northern quolls reach 1,696 impressions and 72 engagements.

The Conversation In 2020 ILWS members authored or co-authored 15 articles for The Conversation authored or co-authored by ILWS Members. Articles which have had good responses include: • A number of articles authored by Associate Professor Dale Nimmo in The Conversation in early January 2020 attracted large audiences. “Tales of wombat ‘heros’ have gone viral, Unfortunately they are not true” appeared on January 14, 2020. It was picked up by ABC news and attracted 394,980 reads, leading to a total of 456,613 reads. Another of his articles, “Animal response to a bushfire is astounding. These are the tricks they use to survive” published January 7, 2020, reached 214,298 reads as it was shared on ABC, Canberra times, 10daily and a number of other online sites. It included 26,191 reads from the United States.

• Associate Professor Peter Andrews’ ‘Death by irony’: The mystery of the mouse that died of smoke inhalation, but went nowhere near a fire appeared in the Conversation on July 12, 2020. It has 45,294 reads and was reprinted by 11 external publishers including ABC, Australian Geographic, Down to Earth (India), Phys.org. The readership was predominantly from Australia but did include 3,745 readers in the USA, 545 from the UK, 499 from India, New Zealand 299, Germany 112 and Singapore 97 among others.

• Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan is a regular contributor to The Conversation, with three articles so far this year. His articles have a total of 120,494 reads. His article on ‘Why Trump’s Make America Great Again hat makes a dangerous souvenir for foreign politicians, in the Conversation May 26, had 33,688 reads, of which 20,921 were from the United States, and 5,478 from Australia. The readership included Norway 168, South Africa 261, New Zealand 1,736 and Canada 898. His post on August 31, “Two inquiries find unfair treatment and healthcare for Maori. This is how we fix it” has 16,377 reads of which 13,452 were from NZ. The story shared on Stuff. co.nz, accounted for 13,189 of those reads.

• Dr Damian Michael, Associate Professor Dale Nimmo and Associate Professor Skye Wassens’s article “Does Australia really have the deadliest snakes? We debunk 6 common myths”, published on September 28, had 45,816 reads. It was republished on National Interest, Flipboard, Lifehacker and Gizmodo. Top reader locations include Australia, 27,010, United States 13,365, United Kingdom 669 and Canada 655.

Authors’ Achievements with The Conversation Associate Professor Dale Nimmo is the highest read author in Charles Sturt University’s Conversation Articles. To date, since The Conversation began in 2011 he has authored/co-authored 18 articles, with 1,132,146 reads, 612 comments. In the last 12 months he has 8 articles, 941,620 reads, 257 comments. The articles were distributed via 111 publishers, with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation accounting for 521,175 reads.

From the list of 128 CSU authors for all time, in terms of reads, ILWS members Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan is sixth; Adjunct Professor Max Finlayson 11th; Dr Travis Holland 12th and Dr Maggie Watson 13th.

Events COVID-19 impacted on the number of events that the Institute would usually run, sponsor or assist with the organisation of. However there were some events that were run before the restrictions came in, in March. After that all events were held on-line.

Events in 2020 included: • A two day MOTA framework development workshop to “kick start” a new project - Translating fish passage outcomes into policy and legislation across South East Asia - which will build on the knowledge gained from previous fish passage projects was held at the Albury-Wodonga campus, February 20-21. The workshop was centred around the Motivation and Ability (MOTA) framework which takes a multi-stakeholder and multilevel approach to assess and compare projects and plans, centred on the integral relationship between Trigger-Motivation-Ability. The workshop was focused on the project’s main research questions and was an important step in understanding the motivations and abilities of the various actors in relation to successful institutionalisation and implementation of fish passage programs within SE Asia. Special guest and presenter was Professor Ho Long Phi, Centre for Water Management and Climate Change, Vietnam National University who has developed the MOTA framework. Participants included ILWS members, representatives from international partner organisations and Hannah McPherson, Hendricks Consulting, Australia.

• A one hour webinar presented by Dr Belinda Cash and facilitated by Robyn Harvey on April 28 had an excellent uptake with an audience of more than 860 participants including both older adults and a wide range of professionals from coming from the health care sector, community organisations and local government.The webinar, presented by CSU and the Australian Association of Gerontology, is associated with an innovative program developed by Robyn called Leadership in Healthy Ageing which aims to get academic knowledge in practice through teaching leaders of health and aged care services in North East Victoria.The aim of the webinar was ILWS Annual Report 2020

to explore the potential impacts of the COVID-19 related restrictions on different groups of older adults and to begin the conversation about strategies and solutions to ensure suitable and adequate supports are available to encourage positive physical and mental wellbeing for all older Australians.

• Organised by the World Fish Migration Foundation to conincide with World Fish Migration Day, a free non-stop 24-hour “Global Swimways Webinar Marathon”. Commencing May 14 the event started in Oceania, focusing on Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, before moving west around the world. The webinar included presentations from over 50 local, national and global experts over nine sessions. Charles Sturt hosted the Oceania session with Professor Lee Baumgartner giving a presentation on “300 hundred years of decline; status and trends of native fish across Oceania”; and Institute Adjunct Professor Martin Mallen-Cooper spoke on the “The Darling River catastrophe: Can we fix it?” The event was very well-attended with 427 registrants, from 41 countries across the world and a range of professions from academics, managers, fishers, community members, teachers, and policy makers, with an average of 250-300 attending each talk.

• What was to have been a two day face-to-face workshop sponsored by ILWS on frog and reptile responses to environmental water management at CSU’s Albury campus became a successful one day on-line workshop using zoom, on July 1.Seven presentations were given for the workshop which included two by Institute members namely: Introduction to water dependent snakes and lizards, Dr Damian Michael, and Introduction to frogs, Associate Professor Skye Wassens. Nearly 60 people (made up of representatives from state and commonwealth agencies and scientists from partner universities) attended the workshop which identified four key themes and areas for further collaboration.

• The “RiverDialogue: Rivers on Fire Forum”, held on July 6-7, was organised by the International Rivers Foundation (IRF) in partnership with ILWS. Twenty five researchers and adjuncts from Charles Sturt University and seven alumni were among the 120 people attending the online forum initiated to examine the impact of bushfires on waterways, the forum provided an opportunity for 11 Australian and international experts from government, industry, science and the community to share valuable knowledge and consider the way forward. Institute researchers freshwater fish scientist Adjunct Dr Luiz Silva and freshwater ecologist Dr Katie Doyle were on the organising committee and facilitated some of the sessions on Day 2. Day one of the forum focussed on the human dimensions of fires and rivers. Presentations covered how the bushfires impacted Australia’s drinking water supplies, Indigenous perspectives on caring for country, learning to work productively with fire, and building resilience capacity. Day two focussed on stream health and included presentations by two ILWS adjunct members- Fisheries Manager for the Greater Murray with NSW DPI Fisheries Mr Luke Pearce, and Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Land and Water Dr Gavin Rees.

• A successful webinar to launch some easy-to-use mobile phone and web-based spatial applications for the Pakistan groundwater project’s farming stakeholders was held on Monday, July 27.The applications have three integrated components – Apna Pani (meaning “our water”), and its two additional modules, Wells and Apna Farms. The new tools were launched by the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Geoffrey Shaw, and ACIAR’s CEO, Prof. Andrew Campbell. They were followed by a presentation and demonstration by Dr Moby Khan, a spatial scientist now based at Charles Sturt University, who leads the spatial component of the project. He explained how the Apps work and the reasoning behind their development. Pakistani farmer Sharaz Akhtar, from the village of Cheecha Watni in Punjab then shared his experiences of using the Apps. The project’s leader and Institute Adjunct Professor Jay Punthakey also presented, giving a brief introduction to the overall project. The event was moderated by Dr Michael Mitchell. Included in the 60 plus attendees for the one and a half hour long webinar were the project’s in-country partners, representatives from NGOs, donor agencies such as USAID, and local farmers.

• F or the second consequent year the Institute was again very involved in Social Science Week, September 7-13, 2020 with CSU’s involvement organised by organised by ILWS members and staff Dr Jen Bond, Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan and Simone Engdahl. Of the 11 CSU events offered six involved ILWS members. They were: -Zooming into online clinical skills training, September 8. Presented by a team of CSU social researchers including Associate Professor Susan Mlcek.

-Conflict & extremism in invasive species management: perspectives from the social sciences, September 8. Presented by Dr Alexandra Knight and Dr Jen Bond with 111 attendees (including speakers and moderators) with registrations from tertiary institutions, NSW Environment, Energy and Science; consultants; Parks Vic; DELWP; LLS; Animal advocacy groups; CMA; and Agriculture Victoria.

-Webinar: Visions 2020 – Social science in our daily lives. September 9. This webinar comprised of four presentations on different topics. Janice Ollerton and Associate Professor Rosemary Black’s presentation was on Playground users’ experience of a socially inclusive playspace: The case study of Livvi’s Place, Port Macquarie, NSW. -Can birds of different feathers flock together? Developing better research collaborations in regional Australia. September 9.

-Christianity, Disability and Indigeneity: What do these mean for person-directed practice, policy and politics, September 10. This successful 2.5hour event attended by 42 people comprised of two public lectures, one by Monica Short and the other by Associate Professor Dominic O’Sullivan who spoke on ‘I have come in order that you may have life – life and all its fullness’ (John 10: 10): Faith, indigeneity and human rights,’. Two panel discussions followed the lecture. Partners in the event were Anglicare and the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, Common Grace. Associate Professor O’Sullivan’s lecture will be included in a staff training resource for Anglicare’s 450 staff.

-The myth of the child offender. September 10. This on-line panel session with a Q and A was presented by members of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology Children and Young People in the Criminal Justice System Thematic Groups with Dr Emma Colvin one of the convenors/moderators.

• The Institute’ held its first-ever on-line conference on November 26 and 27 with the theme “Research for a changing world”. Hailed a a “resounding success”, the conference was an opportunity for members to share the results and conclusions from recent projects and activities and to showcase the work of our strong research teams.The variety of the 44 presentations (five were five-minute presentations, the rest 20 minute) certainly demonstrated the breadth and diversity of the research our members undertake across ILWS Annual Report 2020

the Institute’s four research themes. A number of presentations also reflected the multi and interdisciplinary research ethos of the Institute. The presentations represented all categories of Institute membership – Full Member, Associate Member, Adjunct and Student. Visitors The number of visitors has been impacted by national and international travel restrictions caused by COVID-19. However there were some earlier on in the year including: • Professor Ho Long Phi, from the Centre for Water Management and Climate Change, Vietnam National University, was a special international guest for a two day MOTA framework development workshop held at the Albury-Wodonga campus, February 20-21.Other international participants at the workshop were Rezki Antoni, from the Southeast Asia Fisheries Development Centre, Inland Fisheries Resources Development and Management Department, Indonesia and Chann Aun Tob from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Cambodia • The Women in Trades team hosted the Minister for Women Bronwyn ‘Bronnie’ Taylor for an International Women’s Day afternoon tea during her visit to CSU’s campus at Bathurst on March 3.The Minister, a CSU alumni, joined in a lively discussion facilitated by Dr Donna Bridges where tradeswomen talked about their experiences in male dominated workplaces.Team members Dr Donna Bridges, Associate Professor Branka Krivokapic-Skoko and Elizabeth Wulff, CSU representatives Fiona Nash and Julia Andrews, local tradeswomen, business owners and stakeholders formed the group who met with the Minister.

• Former ILWS PhD student Dr David Dowel, now a Senior Lecturer at St Andrews University in Scotland, returned to CSU’s campus at Bathurst, March 9 to 13, to work on a paper with his former supervisor Professor Mark Morrison, Professor Kevin Parton and Dr Jodie Kleinschafer on climate change champions in households. He also gave a presentation on March 11 on a study he has done around household and family unemployment, volunteering and well-being.

Research Activities Institute members undertake many research activities and projects where the funding for the project is not managed by the Institute, the funding is internal (from within CSU) or the work, while unfunded, is done as part of the research component of their employment with CSU. Examples in 2020 include: • The findings from a research project which sought the perspective of service providers and carers with respect to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been shared with the Government’s Boosting the Local Care Workforce (BLCW) and disseminated by 33 specialist and regional coordinators across Australia. The Choice under the NDIS: Service provider and Carer Perspectives project, led by Dr Jodie Kleinschafe, received some initial ILWS funding and was part of a much larger longitudinal study Exploring the Implementation of the NDIS in the Western NSW Region (2016-2019). This larger project received $8000 in external funding from the Association for Consumer Research.

• An ILWS research team led by Associate Professor Branka Krivokapic-skoko has teamed up with academic colleagues from the University of South Australia (UniSA) to work on a project The social, cultural; and economic impacts that humanitarian migrant communities can have on receiving communities – A case study of Hazara Afghans in Leeton Shire, NSW.The project has received funding from the UniSA ($14,850) and ILWS Team Research Support ($14,500) for Associate Professor Krivokapic-skoko to work with UNiSA colleagues towards potential competitive grant development around the theme: Evaluation of the resettlement of refugees/humanitarian immigrants into small regional centres in Riverina.

• The Riverina Skills Audit project, led by Professor Oliver Burmeister, is underway in collaboration with Regional Development Australia- Riverina NSW, and funded through a $25,000 Agripark – Collaborative Research Agreement. In 2017 Regional Development Australia (RDA) - Riverina commissioned a report to investigate skills issues in the horticulture industry of the Riverina. This project is building on that work with a broader study to investigate current and future skills shortages, focussing on significant industries across the Riverina.

• In 2019 year Dr Luiz Silva and Dr Katie Doyle received ILWS Team grant funding for the project Unraveling the effects of wildfire on freshwater ecosystems in Australia and its impacts on social environmental components, the aim of which was to trigger and develop a new research area within the Institute. Other members of the new multi-disciplinary research group include Associate Professor Dale Nimmo, Dr Paul Humphries, Dr Gavin Rees (CSIRO) and Dr Ana Horta. Members of the new research group who had already begun reading the literature and exploring some of the issues around the theme when Australia experienced the devastating bushfires over the 2019/2020 bushfire season. As a result they were able to provide expert opinion to the media. As part of developing the new research group Dr Silva, in partnership with American collaborators, organised a Symposium around fire resilience and the impact of fire on both terrestrial and freshwater resources at the American Fish Society Conference, in Reno, Nevada, in September 2019. Outputs from this research group in 2020 included “RiverDialogue: Rivers on Fire Forum”; the publication of a “Letter to the editor” , Silva, L.G., Doyle, K.E., Duffy, D., Humphries, P., Horta, A. and Baumgartner, L.J. (2020) Mortality events resulting from Australia’s catastrophic fires threaten aquatic biota. Global Change Biology; the Opinion PIece in The Conversation “Before and after: see how bushfire and rain turned the Macquarie perch’s home to sludge” featured in The Conversation July 10; and presentations for an InFish meeting on August 24.

• Biodiversity responses to the re-introduction of cultural burns in long unburnt grasslands. Price, J. (2020) CSU Green Research Seed grant, $9,956. Dr Price is working on Dja Dja Wurrung country in North Central Victoria to research impacts of cultural burns on country long un-burned.

• Can Australian native birds recognize the odours of invasive mammalian predators? Massaro, M. (2020) CSU Green Research Seed grant, $6,800. Dr Massaro is investigating behaviours of native birds linked to odours of feral predators and potential ILWS Annual Report 2020

applications to increase survival rates of native birds.

• Professor David Watson continued his long-term study monitoring birds in Sturt National Park in the arid, far north-western corner of NSW. Transect surveys recording bird species richness have been conducted along four ephemeral creek lines - Arcoola Creek, Mistletoe Creek, Stud Creek and Thompson Creek- in the south-eastern corner of the park every winter, every year (with the exception of 2005 and 2013) since the study on bird distributional dynamics in arid landscapes commenced in 2003. Professor Watson has “value-added” to the study by installingacoustic recording sensors (acoustic monitoring stations) in 2014 at each of the creek lines as part of the ARC Discovery grant project Bio-Acoustic Observatory: Engaging Birdwatchers to Monitor Biodiversity by Collaboratively Collecting and Analysing Big Audio Data. Roe, P., Brereton, M., & Watson, D, M. (2014-2017).

The acoustic monitoring stations at Sturt National Park (all bar one of the original devices which is still functionally well) were replaced in 2019 year with updated models, developed as part of the ARC LIEF project Acoustic Observatory: a network to monitor biodiversity across Australia (2017-2020) led by Queensland University of Technology with ILWS team members Watson, D., Luck, G. & Nimmo, D. He is also a CI for the Acoustics for large scale biodiversity assessment. Schwarzkopf, L., Fuller, R., Roe, P., Watson, D. & McDonald, P. (2020-2023) Project led by James Cook University, ARC Discovery grant project, which, by agreement, has nil dollars going to CSU. • Indigenous health researcher Associate Faye McMillan is currently involved in a Commonwealth funded project, led by the University of Newcastle called SISTAQUIT, (Supporting Indigenous Smokers to Assist Quitting). The project aims to improve health providers’ skills when offering smoking cessation care to pregnant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and is based on the mid-north coast of NSW. Other projects she is a CI for are, Age of Opportunity - engaging adolescents to improve mental health care in Indigenous primary healthcare services: A multi-site mixed methods study. (2020-2022) ARC Discovery Indigenous grant. $699,000. Led by Central Queensland University; and 2018 Medical Research Futures Fund Clinical Trials Rare Cancers, Rare Diseases and “Unmet Need” (2019-2022), $1,294,542, led by the University of Canberra. This clinical trial is assessing the efficacy and safety of a gel formulation of tea tree oil (TTO), a traditional Aboriginal bush medicine, in the treatment of scabies in remote-dwelling Aboriginal children.

• Institute Adjunct Dr Richard Loyn has completed a project Birds in Black Box woodlands and associated habitats along the Murray River from Hattah-Kulkyne NP to Lindsay Island, spring 2019 to autumn 2020 as part of a long-term program.

• Institute Adjunct Associate Professor Bruce Pennay, an historian, is one of the key drivers behind efforts by the Albury and District Historical Society to have editions of the Border Mail, from 1873 to 1946, digitalised and added to the Trove History website.

• Murray River PIT Tagging. Baumgartner, L., McPherson, J. KarlTek Pty Ltd & Australasian Fish Passage Services (Adjunct Tim Marsden) (2020) MDBA, $17,693. In June two electro-fishing teams (from ILWS and Ecology Australia) were funded by the Murray Darling Basin Authority to PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tag native fish in the River Murray below Mildura. Over a period of 10 days, a total of 571 native fish (Golden Perch, Murray cod and Silver perch) were PIT Tagged. PIT tagging the fish allows the MDBA to continue monitoring fish movement along the River Murray and assess the performance of the Sea to Hume Fishways. The work was undertaken as the result of a recommendation to the MDBA from recent studies that there were not enough tagged fish (fewer than 10,000) left in the river and more tagging was needed so that the collection of important data about fish movement along the river and how they are using fishways installed from 2001, continues.

• Professor Rylee Dionigi is a member of a Canadian/Australian research team for the project Sport, aging, and disability: International perspectives on the meaning of sport in the lives of older adults living with a disability. Horton, S. (University of Windsor), Dionigi,R., Weir,P. and van Wyk,P. (University of Windsor), Baker,J. (York University) and Gard,M. (University of Queensland), (2020-2023), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada,CAD$81,170.

• Coming out of the Ramsar Section of the Society for Wetland Scientists in collaboration with others (World Wetlands Network, Cobra Collective, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature) is a repeat of a world-wide citizen science survey on the state of the world’s wetlands first done in 2017. The new survey is now available in seven languages. Working on the project is Institute Adjuncts Max Finlayson, Professor Nick Davidson, Associate Professor Rob McInness, and Dr Matt Simpson, along with Chris Rostron and Connor Walsh from the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in the UK and James Dalton from IUCN. The data from this global assessment is being maintained by the Open University in the UK. • For some time now, a number of ILWS Adjuncts have been working with other interested colleagues to propose and develop a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Wetlands consistent with the 1982 World Charter for Nature. Recognition of these rights is seen as an essential step in efforts to stop wetland loss and degradation. While the intention is that the proposal will be promoted extensively next year, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the signing of the text of the Ramsar Convention. There have been two papers recently on the concept, namely: Simpson, M., Davidson, N., Davies, G., Finlayson, M., Moomaw, W., Pritchard, D., Fennessy, M., and Whitacre, J. (2020). After two years of threatened species monitoring in Albury, in 2020 the Albury Conservation Company expanded its program to include Wodonga. The initial focus of the program, which began in June 2018, was on the Squirrel Glider (Petaurus norfolcensis) across Thurgoona/Wirlinga. There were concerns that development of the area, a major urban growth area of Albury, would impact negatively on the gliders’ population.The program was based on a monitoring plan funded by Albury Conservation Company (with NSW Department of Industry – Lands), and produced by the Australian Research Centre for Urban Ecology in December 2016. Dr Damian Michael, who is a CSU representative on the board of the Albury Conservation Company, conducted a peer review of the plan in 2017 and the monitoring plan was refined accordingly. In 2020 potential monitoring sites in Wodonga were identified and mapped by ILWs PhD student Liam Grimmett on behalf of the Albury Conservation Company and the program extended by a further 60 sites.

Impacts The research undertaken by our researchers is making a difference. At the local, regional, national and global levels, our research generates insights that help to address issues of social significance, inform policy and decision making, and support people, communities and the natural environment.

Research Impact is defined as the demonstrable contribution that research makes to the economy, society, culture, national security, public policy or services, health, the environment, or quality of life, beyond contributions to academia.

Examples: • Since 2017, ILWS researchers have been involved in a series of social research projects funded by the NSW Department of Primary Industries through its Shark Management Strategy which have looked at public perception and acceptance of shark harm mitigation strategies. Harm from sharks is relatively rare but fear of sharks is widespread and has a range of important consequences. From their studies the researchers (led by Associate Professor Peter Simmons) found that the community had a clear preference for strategies that are less invasive to sharks and other marine life. Recent surveys have showed that the more invasive a strategy is, the lower the community support. The results of their studies were presented at a National Shark Bite Mitigation Measure Workshop, in Adelaide, February 2020, which included shark management policy leaders from NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia where shark management has been a contentious public issue in recent years, as well as Surf Life Saving, Taronga Zoo’s Shark Management File, the Federal Government, and researchers from five universities. Authorities responsible for shark management policy are recognising the importance of understanding and addressing community perceptions. Future policy will increasingly be informed by social research as well as marine environment and technology research, and involve targeted communication to ocean users.

• On September 7, the Asian Development Bank, with support from ILWS, University of South Australia and National University of Laos, released its new Asian Development Bank (ADB) fish passage strategy for LaoPDR. The plan incorporates many aspects of the Institute-led Fish Passage project, a major collaborative research project funded by ACIAR and USAID, including the decision support tool developed by UniSA. The strategy concludes with a statement of how fish passage is relevant to poverty reduction strategies listed in the ADB 2030 strategy and is seen as an excellent example of impact with donor agencies. On the back of this work the ADB have agreed to fund a $US500K fish ladder at That Luang Marsh north of Vientiane. ACIAR’s Ann Fleming, Research Manager (Fisheries) said the strategy was “an excellent example of research translation leading into wide-scale impacts for communities.” New fishway to be built in Lao PDR. Accordingly researchers involved in the major Fish Passage project in Lao PDR and Myanmar are partnering with the Lao Department of Irrigation and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to build the new fishway with funding from the Netherlands Support to Food and Nutritional Security funds. One of the important first steps in building a fishway suitable for local conditions and local fish is the concept design. The design report for the new fishway was published late 2020. The report follows a Fish Passage Masterclass held at Dondok Campus in Vientiane in December 2020 which provided an overview of all aspects of designing fishways with a focus on developing a concept design and cost estimate for a fishway at Houay Mak Hiew. The Masterclass was organised by the National University of Laos (NUoL) and Charles Sturt University (CSU), Australia. Participants included staff from the Department of Irrigation (DoI), Provincial Agricultural and Forestry Office (PAFO), District Agricultural and Forestry Office (DAFO), Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF) officers, as well as representatives and experienced fishers (male and female) of the local community at the proposed site. Since then engineers, biologists, river operators and fishers (NUoL, CSU and the masterclass team) worked together to produce a concept design that will: pass fish, be cost-effective, and be easy to operate and maintain.

While several fishway designs were assessed, the vertical slot fishway design was considered the most suitable for Houay Mak Hiew Regulator. The next step is for the DoI/ADB to commission further engineering work and progress to detailed design, tender and construction. Further steps will include the development of an operation manual; training for regulator operators; and finally monitoring of the fishway to evaluate that it is passing fish and to provide any recommendations for improvements. “The project is an excellent example of proof of concept research proceeding to practical on-ground solutions which are supported by national governments, donors and lending banks,” says project team leader Professor Lee Baumgartner. “The long-term benefits of this project will be improved fisheries in the regions upstream and downstream of the regulator. It is expected that this will lead to improved livelihoods, nutrition and income for people in the regions where the fishery declined after the regulator was built.”

• A CSU-led national initiative known as Equally Well is a concrete example of how our researchers are “making a difference”: of research impact. Equally Well was mentioned 48 times in the Australian Government Productivity Commission Inquiry into Mental Health report released November 17, 2020. The report from the two-year inquiry into mental health has recommended all governments implement the actions of the Equally Well National Consensus Statement (developed and curated by Professor Russell Roberts in 2017) to improve physical health and life expectancy of people with mental illness. The Productivity Commission report estimated that reform of the mental health system would yield $19.3 billion annually in quality of life and increased economic participation. Reducing the gap in life expectancy for people with severe mental illness is highlighted as a priority reform in the report.

The aim of the consensus statement was to help bring together a national, cross-sector alliance, and using a collective impact approach to focus on improving the physical health of people living with a mental illness. Since then, the CSU Equally Well project team has led this initiative, with more than 90 organisations including all governments, 14 professional colleges, national peak bodies, and non-government service providers ‘signing-up’ and committing to make this issue a priority. Since 2017 five research grants supported by the National Mental Health Commission, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, the NSW Mental Health Commission, Neami National, Qld Dept of Health, and NSW Department of Health have been secured– a total of $1,182,114 (of which $849,114 has gone to CSU.)
