The 2025 STL Pizza Passport Promises More Pizza at Half the Price as of January 1
A record 41 St. Louis-area restaurants have joined forces, all offering one pizza of any size or topping combination at half price starting January 1, expiring October 15. That is, for anyone who has a “2025 St. Louis Pizza Passport” in hand. The program, launched in 2020, is designed to celebrate STL’s love of pizza, while raising needed funds for an organization making an impact in the community. For $35, purchasers can enjoy one pizza at a 50% discount at all participating restaurantsany size pizza with any number and combination of toppings. And, with each passport sold, a donation will be made to Home Sweet Home, the region’s first and largest furniture bank, providing essential household items and furnishings to families in need. The goal this year is to raise more than $7,000.
“What we’ve created is an awesome excuse to explore the main streets and municipalities of the region, while trying out some of the best pizza found anywhere,” said Michael Powers, Founder of the St. Louis Square Off Pizza Festival on The Hill, a beloved event that had to be reimagined due to COVID. “Pizza makers played a
vital role in keeping all of us fed when we were sheltered in place, really showing how important these local restaurants are to our daily lives. The introduction of the passport drove traffic to these locally-based pizza places, while raising funds, and awareness, for a deserving non-profit.”
Participating restaurants are located in the St. Louis metropolitan area, which includes the City of St. Louis and surrounding counties in two states, encompassing dozens of ZIP codes, so people can sample squares (or slices) from the best purveyors of pizza from South City to Crystal City, from St. Peter’s to Waterloo and all places in between. Pizza styles vary greatly from St. Louis thin crust to woodfired Neapolitan.

NIAF to Honor Diamondbacks’ Torey Lovullo, Financial Advisor and Philanthropist Francis Joseph DeBlasi, and Chef Dom Ruggiero at 2025 Arizona Gala
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) will host its Regional Arizona Gala on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the new lifestyle hotel, Caesars Republic Scottsdale, with Rao’s Homemade as a presenting sponsor.
This elegant black-tie event, chaired by Pete Melucci, NIAF Regional Vice President – Phoenix, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada, and NIAF Area Coordinators, Massimo Sommacampagna and Mike Farrar and will celebrate Italian American excellence in the region.
“This celebration exemplifies the vibrant spirit and achievements of our Italian American community,” said NIAF President Robert Allegrini. “We are proud to recognize these outstanding individuals who continue to make significant contributions to their fields and community.”
NIAF will present the 2025 NIAF Honoree Award to Salvatore Anthony “Torey” Lovullo, the current manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. A former professional baseball infielder and respected MLB manager, Lovullo has been at the helm of the Diamondbacks since 2017 and is the longest-tenured and winningest manager in franchise history. In his first season at the helm, Lovullo led the D-backs to the National League Wild Card game, earning him National League Manager of the Year honors. In 2023, he guided the club to its second National League pennant to secure the franchise’s first World Series berth in 22 years, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished baseball career. Born to an Italian American family, Lovullo has been a prominent figure in Major League Baseball, demonstrating leadership, strategic prowess, and a deep commitment to the sport.
NIAF will also honor with the 2025 NIAF Honoree Award, Francis Joseph DeBlasi, a Financial Advisor/SVP at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the New York/New Jersey area, DeBlasi attended Christian Brothers Academy before moving on to Wagner College, where he played Division 1 basketball. With over 25 years of wealth management experience, he has also been the recipient of the prestigious Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 under 40 award. Holding philanthropy very close to his heart, DeBlasi is the Founder of the Baller Dream Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides many levels of support to children and young adults batting cancer across seven states.
The 2025 Tomaso Maggiore Culinary Excellence Award, which honors the legacy of the Italian chef and restauranteur, who was a fixture of the Phoenix food scene for more than 30 years will be presented to Dom Ruggiero, Chef and Founder of Cast Iron Concepts. A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran who grew up in Long Island, New York and moved to the Valley, Ruggiero has held various positions at many popular restaurants training under James Beard award-winning chefs. His culinary talent and desire to bring elevated dining to his hometown inspired him to open his first restaurant, Hush Public House, in 2019 to immediate acclaim. Two more concepts, Fire at Will and Bar Cena, have since joined the Cast Iron Concepts family, each with its own unique spin on Ruggiero’s chef-driven approach to drinking and dining.
The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. on the Cleopatra Pool deck and Romulus Foyer, followed by a dinner and awards program at 7 p.m. in the Romulus Ballroom. Proceeds from the gala will benefit NIAF and the Baller Dream Foundation.
Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the 2025 NIAF Regional Arizona Gala are now available on the NIAF website.

Introducing a New Italian Book
Submitted by Frank Di Piero
Announcing the release of “Italian Women in Chicago, Volume II, Siamo arrivate (We have arrived).” This anthology is a collection of stories, spotlights, poetry, and much more. Focusing on “Saving Our Stories,” “Pop Culture,” “Entrepreneurial Spirit,” “Shattering Glass Ceilings,” “Assimilation,” “Activism,” “Spiritual Life,” and “Cultural Influences,” the reader will dive into the experience of being a flying angel at the feast of Maria SS Lauretana, learn about the life of a Reality TV Star and become acquainted with a very talented actress who was a childhood friend of Marlon Brando.
The immigrant experience is explored thoroughly from the early 1900s to the more recent arrivals from the 90s and 2000s. Be there every step of the
way as these women experience life in a new country, offering their real feelings, sometimes being delightful and sometimes being painful.
Accomplishments in a wide variety of fields are touched upon, from law, medicine, and dentistry to entertainment, cosmetology, and military. Become familiar with a pioneering organization formed in 1886 by a dedicated group of Italian women committed to providing support and charitable assistance to impoverished Italian immigrants in America.
The editors aim to ensure that the stories of Italian women in Chicago are told with authenticity and respect. They have produced a book that not only preserves history but also inspires future generations to appreciate and continue the legacy of Italian American women in Chicago.

Italian Author Chosen Best Book of 2024
We at Kazabo Publishing are very happy to announce that Italian author Valeria Corciolani’s Pentimento Mori has been chosen as one of the best books of 2024 by the Washington Independent Review of Books. Valeria is one of the best selling mystery authors in Italy today and this the very first of her books to be translated into English.
Pentimento Mori follows the adventures of Dr. Edna Silvera, a prickly art historian who would rather deal with her chickens than her academic colleagues –or her mother. Roped into supervising a Dante Festival in a remote Italian village, she stumbles across what appears to be a medieval painting that shouldn’t exist just seconds before she stumbles over the body of its former owner.
Described as being “a brilliant mystery blending elements of art, religion and history,” having “plenty of laughs,” and with over 2000 enthusiastic reviews on Amazon.it, Pentimento Mori is a must-read – for anyone who loves Italian culture. Available on Amazon.

Inspired New Year’s Resolutions
By Courtney Kamm-Finn
New Year’s resolutions don’t always have to be about getting rid of something — getting rid of sugar, alcohol, losing weight, etc. This year, focus on adding to your life and reconnecting to what makes you, you! Here are five New Year’s resolutions that can help you reconnect with your Italian heritage:
1. Learn or Improve Your Italian Language Skills: Make it a goal to either start learning Italian or improve your fluency through watching Italian films, reading Italian books, or even practicing with a language partner. Check out Speak Italian With Andrea on
Facebook, a native Italian resident of St. Louis.
2. Cook Traditional Italian Dishes: Dedicate time to learning classic Italian recipes that have been passed down through generations. This is a great activity to do with family or friends! Order the Sicilian Cultural Association cookbook at sandychirco@sbcglobal.net or call Sandy at 314-974-8126.
3.Explore Italian Art and History: Make a resolution to deepen your knowledge of Italy’s rich history, art, and architecture. From the Renaissance to modern Italian cinema, learning more about Italy’s cultural contributions will deepen your appreciation of your heritage. Get to know Roberta Kaye Waldbaum, an Anna Maglione-Sie Endowed Professor of Italian Culture; Teaching Professor, Italian by emailing her at roberta.waldbaum@du.edu.
4. Celebrate Italian Holidays and Traditions: Embrace and celebrate Italian holidays and traditions, like Ferragosto (August 15) or La Festa di San Gennaro. You can recreate the festivities, cook special meals, or learn the cultural significance of these events to keep traditions alive in your family. Visit the Sicilian Cultural Association of St. Louis at sicilianstl.com to become a member and celebrate these holidays and traditions.
5. Take a Trip to Italy: If possible, plan a visit to Italy, especially to regions tied to your family’s roots. Even if you aren’t able to make it there this year, start the planning process and give yourself something to look

Read With Alexandra

“The Housemaid” by
Freida McFadden
This book is a major page-turner! You may be wondering why this is a Read With Alexandra (RWA) pick, and your thoughts are valid. Admittedly, this is a stretch. I read this by the pool this summer. It definitely held my attention despite all the distractions one may encounter at a public pool. This book is the first of four in McFadden’s Housemaid Series.
Nina Winchester hires Mille to serve as her housemaid. The 329 pages leave us guessing who is responsible for the mistreatment of the new maid. Is it Nina or her husband? Here’s where the Italian connection comes in; the gardener, Enzo, is a mysterious character who sprinkles warnings in Italian to Millie. I enjoyed seeing the Italian language written and did not have to use a translator to understand. See if you can spot the incorrect noun endings. (Example, using ragazzo when referring to a girl.) This is a great read during a lazy winter day, and you can brush up on your Italian.
Launches New Line of “At Home” Products Now Available in Local Stores
Award-winning Italian restaurant Charlie Gitto’s is excited to announce the expansion of its At Home line, offering a range of premium sauces, dressing, and wine for patrons to recreate fine-dining experiences at home.
Charlie Gitto’s Expands At Home Line with Premium Sauces, Dressing, and Wine Award-winning Italian restaurant Charlie Gitto’s is excited to announce the expansion of its At Home line, offering a range of premium sauces, dressing, and wine for patrons to recreate fine-dining experiences at home. Five products added in the fall of 2024 are the Pomodoro Sauce, San Marzano Sauce, Sweet Italian Vinaigrette, Chianti, and Pinot Grigio, all of which are naturally vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free.
“We are thrilled to bring the authentic flavors of our restaurant into your home with our At Home line,” said Charlie Gitto, Jr., Owner of Charlie Gitto’s. “Each product, from sauces and dressing to wine, reflects our commitment to quality. We use only the finest ingredients and time-honored recipes that have made our restaurant an iconic culinary destination in St. Louis.”
The sauces are authentic Italian staples that work well in penne pasta, lasagna, or any tomato-based dish. Pomodoro Sauce features a blend of ripe plum tomatoes, olive oil, fresh garlic, and sweet basil, resulting in a full-bodied sauce with a sweet flavor. The San Marzano Sauce is more savory, using fresh San Marzano tomatoes grown in the volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius in Italy to produce a richly flavorful sauce.
A combination of vinegar, oil, garlic, spices, and a touch of sugar make up the Sweet Italian Vinaigrette, the house salad dressing at Charlie Gitto’s. It’s great for salads and as a marinade for chicken, pork, and seafood.
Chianti is Tuscany’s most famous red wine. The blend exclusively created for Charlie Gitto’s primarily uses Sangiovese grapes, along with Ciliegiolo and Colorino grapes. It has fruity and floral notes and pairs well with cheese, salami, and red meat.
Meanwhile, Pinot Grigio is a lightbodied white wine crafted from Pinot Grigio grapes that boasts aromas of lemon-lime, pear, and stone fruits like peach and apricot. It complements salads, chicken, turkey, and
seafood.
Jars of sauces, $9.99 each, and bottles of dressing, $6.99 each, are available at the local section of Schnucks grocery stores. The Chianti, $60 per bottle, and the Pinot Grigio, $56 per bottle, are exclusively sold at Charlie Gitto’s on The Hill.
About Charlie Gitto’s
Founded in 1981 in The Hill neighborhood, Charlie Gitto’s is an award-winning Italian restaurant with Sicilian roots. The St. Louis staple honors the rich traditions of Italian food and hospitality, offering a fine dining experience of classic dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Future of Missouri Baking Co. Unknown
By Courtney Kamm-Finn
One famous St. Louis bakery is in jeopardy because of a disagreement between the two current owners. Stefano Gambaro, a native of Genoa, Italy, opened Missouri Baking Co. in 1924 as a sweet treat destination on The Hill. One hundred years later, the establishment is still in the family — well, kind of.
Stefano Gambaro’s grandchildren, Chris Gambaro and his sister Camille Lordo, co-managed the bakery for many years until Gambaro sold his 50 percent stake to his longtime friend Anthony Favazza late last year. The new partnership between Favazza and Lordo has been anything but smooth, as Lordo sued Favazza’s company in St. Louis Circuit Court in November 2024, asking a judge to dissolve their co-owned company and dispose of the assets.
The dispute mainly sources from differentiating opinions between the two current owners: Lordo wanting to continue the business the way that it always has been, and Favazza wanting to add wholesale, online shopping, and more.
There has been no change since the original lawsuit in November 2024.
Carol Caico’s New Book “A Sicilian Family” is a Riveting Novel Following the Lives of a Sicilian Family Who Must Rely on Each Other to Survive Both Trials and Triumphs
Fulton Books author Carol Caico, who holds a PhD and is a nurse practitioner, has completed her most recent book “A Sicilian Family”: a gripping and heartfelt story of love, loss, and survival that centers around a small Sicilian family who find themselves torn apart by circumstances, enduring both good and bad times while trying to find their place.
Carol Caico currently lives in a small town on Long Island. The author has two wonderful sons and daughters-in-law,
as well as four beautiful grandchildren, whom she adores. Her publications include several nursing and medical journal articles and a book, “Pathophysiology of Nursing Demystified.”
“Maria and Mario got married young after a situation that happened when she was young; she had to sneak to see him, but when she was nineteen and he was twentyone, they were given a lovely wedding,” writes Caico. “They loved each other and had three sons and a daughter very close in age. This is the story of their lives as parents. A situation occurred, forcing Maria, Mario, and their young daughter to move to America. Two of her sons were at a university in Sicily. Mario had a very successful business growing grapes and making wines and olive oil. He exported to America and at local markets in Italy. His one son then took over the business and was paid a lot of money. There was great sadness that occurred in the family, apart from joyful times. Life took many twists and turns. I hope you enjoy this fictional novel, ‘A Sicilian Family.’”
Published by Fulton Books, Carol Caico’s book is a poignant, emotionally stirring tale that promises to transport readers as they discover the courage of Maria, Mario, and their children as they endure difficulties and challenges along the way. Expertly paced and character-driven, “A Sicilian Family” is sure to resonate with readers from all walks of life, revealing just how strong the bonds of family can be in the face of adversity.
Readers who wish to experience this inspiring work can purchase “A Sicilian Family” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
