THE IFDA INTRODUCES FOUR IFDA FORUMS

F

resh from the success of the first IFDA networking event hosted by Ox Club, sure-fire hit with multiple Oliver Awards and even a nod from the bible of food itself – the Michelin Guide. This year the IFDA brings a series of four events to take place across the city. Designed by Thom Hetherington, these give access to some of the UK’s

food and drink experts and provide a holistic, dynamic learning experience to the independent food and drink businesses that already thrive in Leeds The first of these sessions to be held at The Tetley on the 25th of April will look “at what Leeds’ USPs are. Where is Leeds going, where are the opportunities for entrepreneurs within the local food and drink landscape? Who or what are the key players?”

4

The IFDA Forum plans to move beyond the introspective, building on its strengths to look externally for inspiration, innovation and opportunities IFDA members have free access to all the IFDA Forums. To join the IFDA and access the selection of services, events & mentors visit url.

ith digital industries growing a whopping 32% quicker than other economies in the UK, Leeds’ status as a centre for Tech and digital industries is certainly something to celebrate. But is the ballooning success of this historically masculine industry any use to improving figures for female employment and work place diversity?

Leeds International Festival wants to show that it is and it can be; that there is both space and an overwhelming need for a diversification of voices in the Tech field. Leeds Dock is a thriving Tech hub. Look at Sky, one of the biggest employers of coders in Leeds. We spoke to Natasha Sayce-Zelem, Sky’s Head of Tech, who is also the woman behind the Leeds International Festival line-up. “Sky surpassed original targets,” she told us, “with a total of 650 highly-skilled employees now working at the Leeds Dock site. UPPORT AND PROMOTE GENDER

INTRODUCIN TOM JOY T om Joy is one of the hardest-working photographers we know. Splitting his time between London
and Leeds, he shoots everything from big fashion clients, to pretty much all of the Leeds scene, from food to events and openings. Tom is always on our list when we need a great shoot. He always nails the brief. We asked him a few questions to get under his skin and discover about the first meeting between Fogal and Tom. What are you drinking? Favourite drinks right now are Northern Monk's Patron Project no.4.01 with Drew Millward and North Brewing's Transmission - holy shit. They're so moreish!! Generally though, you'll find me enjoying gin, coffee and pints of water to keep my mind going.

What’s been your most favourite project, recently I recently shot for a jewellery brand called "Toolally" for the third time just before Christmas and I had finally created some studio work that I was super proud of. Another was a series for O2 and England Rugby around touch rugby. There was a killer team covering every aspect of production and it was amazing to be part of. You get to be an animal for the day. What animal do you choose & why? The wolf is definitely my spirit animal but I'd probably like to be a bird of prey for a day. At least nothing much will attack you so you can be free to soar around and enjoy some crazy views from the skies.

What did you want to be when you were younger? I wasn't even sure to be honest... Towards the end of school I was interested in 'business' as a subject which I guess links to being self employed but I enjoyed art from a young age. I just never expected to take that to any professional level and actually make a living from it! Do you speak any other languages? Aye, pure mintal Scottish, ken? You’re on death row (sorry) what would you request as your last meal? Christmas dinner made the same way as my parents do it with more pigs in blankets that I can actually eat.

NEWS FUTURE TALES AND TRIBULATIONS

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Oliver Awards saw Bundobust, still giddy from a fantastic review of their Manchester outpost, scooping best street food in Leeds. Fine dining faves Ox Club won a welldeserved three awards – Best Newcomer, Best British and coveted Best Overall titles.

Ham & Friends is nearly back. Their Christmas popup "All The Trimmings" was more than enough to whet our appetites and we’ve been lucky enough to have a snoop around the Grand Arcade building to see the unfolding transformation. The cheese situation is going to be worth the visit alone, never mind the wine, charcuterie and all the other carefully curated delights that await.

14

Harrogate’s Scandi fine dining stars Norse smashed their Kickstarter target, meaning that they’ve secured a dedicated home for their restaurant. So many of those familiar with their concept got involved, illustrating just how beloved their food is. We’re very much looking forward to both seeing & eating in the new space.

Leeds has shown that it’s not all grim up north by showing the UK how it’s done when it comes to nurturing independent restaurants with three years of growth. Our incredible foodie wealth in the city is a testament to that and couldn’t be what it is without Leeds Indie Food and the Independent Food and Drink Academy and of course everyone who supports the many indie restaurants across Leeds.

Leeds Creative Family Tree is back and expanding. This project is designed to showcase the immense range of creativity in
the city alongside its culture. A non-profit organisation built to help collaboration with likeminded creatives, the 2017 issue of the Leeds Creative Family Tree
was launched on 23rd of March with a party at the Leeds Corn Exchange and a celebration of Leeds’ talents

15

We turned 5! Crazy times, with new offices and an expanding team… it’s quite something to think that I Like Press has been about for half a decade, but there you have it.

HOWL VS KAISER

S

imon from the Kaiser Chiefs sat down to interview Sam, the singer and guitarist, and Alex the drummer from Howl for a bit of a Live At Leeds lowdown...

moment for me, I was really into it…

ever caught any of these special acts?

Alex: Yeah… I don’t even remember a lot of Live at Leeds

Sam: 1975.

Sam: Haha mister cool! Simon: You’re playing Live At Leeds this year - what are your best memories of the festival? Have you been? Sam: Erm, for me, it’s two years ago when I went to see, well me and the boys, we watched The Cribs in the Town Hall, and that was amazing, that was really fun. Who else have we seen there? Simon: Are they one of your favourite bands, or…? Sam: Nah, I mean I really like the Cribs but I’d heard loads about their live show, that its pretty decent, like amazing, and when I saw that I was like flippin’ heck, that was quite a good

Alex: Actually I saw a band called Gengahr who were really good, and we saw Parma Violets, at the Town Hall Alex: Oh Parma Violets! They seemed really good! Simon: That leads us to the next question – which is, what are your stand-out Leeds venues? Sam: Brudenell! It’s just always for me going to be Brudenell. Simon: Thumbs up for Brudenell all the way! Live at Leeds has had some of the biggest bands before they get big – 1975, Ed Sheeran etc – have you

16

Alex: No, but we couldn’t see ‘em, we didn’t get in did we! Sam: Ohhhhh no, almost, basically, we could’ve almost seen 1975, but we didn’t. The queue was absolutely massive; there was no chance anyone could’ve got in. Alex: So the answer is, we saw the queue for 1975 – the queue was pretty impressive, so. Actually, we saw King Cruel… Alex: Yeah, he was good Sam: I mean, he’s not as big as Ed Sheeran… Well done Ed Sheeran. Catch Howl at Live At Leeds on Saturday 29th April 2017. Tickets available at liveatleeds.com

MUSIC THIS SOME MUSIC RELEASES

Roxanne de Bastion - Heirlooms & Hearsay Berlin-born, London-based singer-songwriter Roxanne de Bastion will release her second album ‘Heirlooms & Hearsay’ on the 5th May. Following her 2013 debut album ‘The Real Thing’, Roxanne de Bastion’s new album is assured, thematically complex and showcases the kind of growth as an artist and writer that years of touring and working on your craft earns you.

Napoleon IIIrd - The Great Lake

Dance To The Compilation

Radio

4x12”

Famed Leeds label Dance To The Radio are back and have announced the return of their 4x12” vinyl compilation series. For the first instalment of the newly revived format, four Yorkshire artists will be stepping up to contribute a single. Self-styled Trash punk trio Dead Naked Hippies will lead the release followed by the psychedelic madmen of FLING, the brilliant & gloomy electronic pop of singer and producer LAMIA and arty odd-ball recluses The Tiny Minds from the deepest darkest corners of the Yorkshire Pennines.

18

In the six years since his last album, Napoleon IIIrd has covered a fair amount of distance, both emotional and literal. The culmination of that journey results in the release of his new album, ‘The Great Lake’ on 19 May 2017 (Hatch Records). A five track exploration of the possibilities of song structures within experimental soundscapes thematically wedded to James’ personal experiences of grief, ‘The Great Lake’ is paradoxically an album full of human warmth and emotion and a strident piece of abstract art, the collision point between the theory of Basinski and the melody of Northern Soul.

MONTH sleepmakeswaves Breath Only

Ex People - Bird Ex People are the the latest band to sign to London label New Heavy Sounds, home to Black Moth, Limb and Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard. 'Bird' was recorded with Wayne Adams (Vodun, USA Nails, Death Pedals, Casual Nun) at Bear Bites Horse Studios, and he's managed to perfectly capture the visceral weight of their sound, a startling amalgam of super filthy fuzz thick riffs, grunge, noise rock and stoner, combined with a punk attitude.

Post-rock trailblazers sleepmakeswaves are set to release their new album “Made of Breath only” on Friday 7th April through Bird’s Robe Records. This release follows their epic 55date, 22-country 'Great Northern' tour of 2015 and 10 Australian tours, 4 European tours, 2 US tours and shows across Asia and New Zealand since their release of their debut album in 2011. To cap it all off they will also be appearing at ArcTanGent festival later this year.

19

Valerian Swing - Nights Initially emerging in 2011, Valerian Swing cemented their place as one of the most interesting bands in the Italian heavy scene, with their second album "A Sailor Lost Around The Earth", and then at an international level with 2014’s ‘Aurora’. Now 2017 sees the return of Valerian Swing following a change of personnel; one that saw the exit of bassist Alan Ferioli in favour of baritone guitarist Francesco Giovanetti. The trio went and created their fourth full length album, during a period of artistic growth and maturity that has seen them gradually expand their spectrum of sound beyond the boundaries of just being ‘heavy’.

YO

OUR MONTHLY TUMMY BURSTING TIPS ON WHAT TO EAT

Cauliflower – Ox Club Hands down a team favourite when it comes to the Ox Club menu, this is cauliflower but not as you know it. Fired over a wood grill and sitting on a smokey romesco sauce then covered in flaked almonds and sherry vinegar, this humble vegetable elevated to a whole other level entirely. We absolutely cannot recommend this dish enough.

OU NEED TO TASTE THIS

Milky Bar Mini Eggs

Gobi Manchurian - Bundobust

Mercifully these are only available at Easter. We rue the day the I Like Press team were introduced to these candy covered nuggets of creaminess as they’ve become somewhat of an addiction in the office. We really didn’t want to like them but these Milky bad boys are damn good. You’ve been warned.

This Bundobust classic is back on the specials boards; mouthwatering cauliflower and egg dumplings are smothered in a sweet and spicy Indo-Chinese sauce. Get your laughing gear around this spicy number before it disappears off the specials board again.

YOU NEED TO DRINK THIS

Bundobust x Chorlton Brewing Co Kulfi Sour 5.1% ABV A saffron, kerwa, cardamom sour beer fermented with jaggery – a delicious type of sugar made from date, cane & palm sap. Bundobust beer collaborations are always worth seeking out for their unique take on traditional styles, so their take on the leftfield style sour makes it a must. Expect a distinctive spicy but fun beer that doesn’t overpower. Ilkley Spring Oatmeal Pale in cask 4% ABV Ilkley Brewery combined some of their favourite New Zealand, Australian & American hops after various hop led experiments for the Tribus Lupulus series to create this cask pale to ease us into Spring. Luke Raven the director rates it as the best cask ale he’s had in the past year. A fresh and herby brew with a very dry finish.

22

Northern Monk x Cloudwater HopCity IPA 6.2% ABV A limited edition IPA brewed to showcase the best hops available, this offers the added allure of golden tickets to HopCity hidden within five of the cans’ peel away labels.
