MERCHT Mercht x AM Charity Christmas Jumpers 2016 Chrismtas isn't too far off, not sure you knew this? One of our favourite parts of this time of year, apart from all the food and drink is the jumpers! Our good friends Mercht have sorted this right out and all for a good cause.

The project consists of five individual Christmas sweater campaigns running simultaneously on the Mecht platform, the sweaters have been designed for Awesome Merchandise previously and they are ‘recycling’ them each to raise funds for a separate charity chosen by the artist. Lize Meddings and Drew Millward are working with Mind. Rob Flowers - Help Refugees. Kristyna Baczynski - Wakefield City of Sanctuary and Hungry Sandwich Club - CLIC Sargent.

Mercht is a ridiculously good and innovative way of designing T-shirts and mugs, having tried and tested the platform, we are more than happy to vouch for everything. They have launched a special Christmas sweater campaign which runs until 9th December, so be quick!

Campaign Links

Working alongside some of the UK’s leading artists & illustrators and with print partner Awesome Merchandise at the helm, they have handpicked some great causes to complement the wonderful initiative.

"WHAT DO YOU

he holiday camp festival model should 100% work but often fails to deliver everything in a modern festival market. We, as humans, require more from festivals now and not just the option to have a chalet, which is of course a delightful experience from pitching a tent. A brand new music festival is launching next year in North Wales and is hoping to take the whole format to a new level. Safe As Milk is the festival and will happen April 21st to the 23rd 2017. Leading the bands is English folk legend Shirley Collins, who is releasing her first album in 38 years this November on Domino Records, and Syrian dabke vocalist Omar Souleyman who’s latest Four Tet produced record ‘Bahdeni Nami’ was described by The Guardian as “irresistible, hyperactive electronica”. Joining them at Safe As Milk will be legendary San Fransico experimental art collective The Residents, indescribable Japanese group, OOIOO, led by Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms (who is also the subject of The Flaming Lips 2002 masterpiece ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’) and the live reincarnation of the revered experimental rock band This Heat, This Is Not This Heat, featuring a mix of original members and special guests that have and may indeed include people such as Thurston Moore & Alexis Taylor. Other acts appearing at the festival include brilliant Swedish punk band Brainbombs, legendary Detroit electronic duo Dopplereffekt, Double-drumming Cairo trio Islam Chipsy & EEK, Afro-futurist techno producer and legendary DJ Hieroglyphic Being, Baltimore math-rockers Horse Lords, Avant-garde music pioneers Nurse With Wound and critically acclaimed songwriter and producer Grouper. Safe As Milk is an impressive new festival that will celebrate the very best in leftfield music from around the world. Named after Captain Beefheart’s 1967 debut album, it brings together a carefully curated blend of most exciting musical ideas across genres and geographies,

INTRODUCIN THE NOT SO LATE SHOW one we highly recommend checking out.

R

oss Brierley and Joshua Sadler were two school friends who weren’t actually friends at that important growing-up stage of life. They basically went to the same school. The two were very different characters during the adolescent years and now find themselves starting a comedy partnership. They describe 'The Not So Late Show' as a live talk show full of red hot chat, news and daft behaviour. The format of the show, as you may guess from the title, is an American chat show hosted by themselves. Each month they invite other comedy pals along to be guests and join in throughout the night. It is a relaxed but very funny evening and

8

Leeds' comedy scene seems to be in a strong ascendancy, with nights like Group Therapy coming to Leeds, taking up residency at Headrow House (monthly) and Leeds Comedy Festival getting bigger each year. The Not So Late Show happens monthly in Leeds and every now and then elsewhere. NEWS FUTURE TALES AND TRIBULATIONS

In tour news 65daysofstatic head out on tour across Europe & the UK plus they’ll be hitting the Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen in February 2017. Wembley Arena got a double dose of prog magic thanks to Anathema supporting Opeth on the 19th November. Looking for some punk rock thrills from back in the day with a few sing a long big hits? Terrorvision have been on tour again, dates across the UK.

Hip Hop Karaoke hits the Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen on Saturday 3rd December courtesy of the UK's Original Hip Hop Karaoke event fresh from it’s weekly residency at The Social in Soho and a slew of major festivals including Glastonbury, V, Bestival, Isle of Wight, Lovebox and Radio 1 Ibiza. With over 200 songs to choose ranging from WuTang Clan all the way to Drake, all performed with a live DJ.

14

The I Like Press roster continues to grow and we’re thrilled to announce that Norwegian prog maestros Shaman Elephant, the enigmatic and multi-faceted Crippled Black Phoenix have joined us along with Young Legionnaire which features exmembers of Bloc Party and Yourcodenameis:milo. Never a dull moment & definitely no dull music in the I Like Press office.

The ever excellent Mi Mye will be launching their new Christmas single 'I'm Dreaming Of A...' at the Brudenell Social Club on Sunday 18th December. This show will take place in the afternoon, meaning no late night trains and trudging home in the cold December night, you can also get a Christmas pie, a Christmas beer and watch a Christmas film. Did someone say Christmas?

Friends Of Ham are bringing us a very special pop-up series called All The Trimmings over the Grand Arcade to celebrate their new concept, Ham & Friends opening in 2017. Expect all things ham & cheesy including a cheese and wine shop, hampers galore, wreath making classes, wine tasting and wait for it… a raclette bar for all your melted cheesy potato needs and cravings!

15

You can’t really call Christmas news, but the feasting across Leeds that is lined up is definitely news for anyone who likes to eat & that’s kind of our thing. Ox Club, Bundobust and Northern Monk Refectory are doing special Christmas menus that had us all drooling over them. Belgrave Christmas Feast has possibly the best line-up we’ve ever seen. Headrow House is transforming itself into a wintery beer hall with pretzels, schnapps & more and when your belly is full you can feast your eyes on the amazing art installations along the Christmas In Leeds art trail.

MUSIC THIS SOME MUSIC RELEASES

Young Legionnaire - Zero Worship (Superstar Destroyer Records) - Out now

Crippled Black Phoenix - Bronze (Season of Mist) - Out now

Featuring former Yourcodenameis:milo frontman Paul Mullen and ex-Bloc Party bassist Gordon Moakes, 'Zero Worship' is a record fighting to be heard in a sea of noise, both literally and conceptually. Esben and The Witch - Older Terrors (Season of Mist) - Out now Something ancient and primordial stalks the four tracks on the fourth full-length of ESBEN AND THE WITCH. The haunting voice of Rachel Davies weaves arcane spells through hypnotic patterns. Interlaced in these invocations is the emotive string sorcery provided by guitarist Thomas Fisher while Daniel Copeman evokes a state of trance with his shamanic drumming and wide sonic landscapes painted by electronic synthesizer magic.

18

Bronze consists primarily of copper but it is the inclusion of other metals and non-metals that gives this alloy its specific characteristics. Ever since mankind discovered the secret of its making thousands of years ago the golden and shining bronze has changed the course of history spawned destruction and war yet also been crafted into desired objects of extreme beauty. You will find each of these traits inherent in the sixth studio album of Crippled Black Phoenix.

MONTH T.O.M.B - Fury Nocturnus (Peaceville Records) - Out now

65daysofstatic - One Time For All Time (Monotreme Records) – Out Now The long-awaited re-issue of their critically acclaimed 2005 album ‘One Time For All Time’ on vinyl for the first time. Following the release of their widely acclaimed debut album ‘The Fall of Math’ in 2004 65daysofstatic spent several months touring the UK playing to packed venues and festival tents. They recorded three radio sessions for BBC Radio 1 - for the late John Peel, Zane Lowe and a live from Maida Vale Studios set for Huw Stephens. ‘One Time For All Time’ was written on and between those tours and captures the chaos of a scruffy band of noise apparatchiks thrust from obscure beginnings in bedrooms.

Through 18 years of existence, T.O.M.B. (Total Occultic Mechanical Blasphemy) has created a multitude of horrific, spell-binding sound structures across thirteen different releases including compilations, splits, EPs and LPs. During that time, the project has devoted itself to developing material with an essence directly derived from areas and elements associated with death, paranormal activity and occult practices.

Seven Impale - Contrapasso (Karisma Records) - Out now Visiting places where no band has been before with 'Contrapasso' Seven Impale pay no heed to genre boundaries by melding melody, experimentation, dramatics, atmosphere and contrasting rhythms together.

CHRISTMAS Adventure: [Explore] the Christmas in Leeds trail of art, light and magic this Winter... LeedsBID have launched a very exciting trail around Leeds City Centre supporting their Welcome to Leeds portal, they have collaborated with artists and locations across the city to create an astounding array of light, bright installations to wow you this winter. As well as the majesty of the tree found in City Square and the beautiful Northern Ballet-sponsored tree you’ll come across in the train station, Trinity Leeds is this year hosting Europe’s largest “Kissing Tree”! Pucker up beneath this 60 foot-high beauty and watch the tree’s blush spread from its roots to its tip!

24

Most of the fifteen displays centre around the majesty and festive feelings prompted by light. Whether it’s candles on the table, twinkly fairy lights on the tree or the brash and beautiful streetlights that cheer our streets at this time of year, lights really do have a big impact on festive spirit. But lights are not just the festive twinkle described above – light can be powerful, inspiring and altogether beautiful. From the ephemeral to the monolithic, delicate to gaudy, refined to childfriendly, Leeds’ Advent[ure] Trail promises to inspire, unite and cheer the people of Leeds right through to Christmas, and beyond. www.christmas.welcometoleeds.co.uk #ChristmasInLeeds

FOR THE DIA A SHORT GUIDE TO SOME MUST SEE THINGS IFDA Call us biased but Leeds has one of the fastest growing & best indie food & drink scenes in the UK and there’s plenty of national recognition to back it up. What has been missing till earlier this year has been a strong support network. Here’s where the Leeds Independent Food & Drink Academy comes into it’s own thanks to Leeds City Council & Leeds Becketts University. Industry experts are now here to help our independents whether they’re street food vendors to small businesses, get the advice, training & all those bits in between. Throw in the IFDA inspiring events, the most recent being a small business speed dating advice mash up with our very own Simon Fogal dishing out Leeds Indie Food wisdom. Now, adding to their smorgasbord of skills is Thom Hetherington who brings his vast knowledge of the food & drink industry to the team as a consultant. The IFDA is quickly showing they mean business in their role as a vital service for anyone looking to take the food & drink self-employed plunge.
