A

s Bundobust celebrated their second Birthday in Leeds, we headed over to Manchester to gain a little sneak-peak into their expansion The first thing you plans and take a nosey realise is that this around the site on the is big step up from day they got the keys. Leeds, not just taking the bold move into another City, but with it actually being 150% bigger than the Leeds site. Location wise, it is sitting right in the middle of Piccadilly and the Northern Quarter, which makes this a very interesting location and one that is comparable to Leeds, being on a commuter run near a rail station.

A former buffet restaurant, the site has been shut for some time. With the license already in place, a pretty extensive kitchen area, walkin refrigeration and loads of space, it makes so much sense. The actual floor area is set out quite well, in the centre of the main seating area is an atrium, which when we looked around had old Chinese stained glass details, holes in the wall had been

... knocked through to check on the state of the walls behind and with the builders having moved in the last few weeks, the project is taking shape. What we find interesting is that these guys are taking on risk and ploughing money into areas that may not have got the attention to detail that the sites deserve. Bundobust Leeds was a former amusement arcade on a pretty run down unloved street in Leeds, yet it was a five-minute walk to one of the busiest stations in the UK. Manchester is following a similar format, the current front door has a million tales to tell and is on a hugely popular commuter run. We are super excited to see what happens on the site (and will of course keep you updated). The plan is to open in late November. Do not worry the concept will not change, this is a bigger site but will welcome you in in the very same way. lkley Brewery. You probably know their multi-award winning pale ale, Mary Jane but you might not be familiar with some of their small batch, experimental & seasonal brews. If you 1. SIBERIA RHUBARB COLLAB were lucky enough SAISON WITH MELISSA COLE to taste their festival exclusives at Leeds International Beer You start off with this Festival, you’ll know beer wondering where just how tasty they are the rhubarb flavour is - Salted Caramel Stout, but it’s important to Roggenbier & Aged remember that this isn’t Apricot Pale Ale – all a rhubarb flavoured of which sold out by beer, but that whenever Brewery use the Saturday. Here are Ilkley adjuncts in their beer it’s three must try beers. to complement rather than dominate the flavours. A lovely earthy flavour to this saison & it’s good to know that all the rhubarb used comes from one farm in the heart of the Rhubarb Triangle that has been growing the finest forced rhubarb for decades.

ILKLEY BREW 2. WESTWOOD WHITE CHOCOLATE STOUT COLLAB WITH BREWDOG A beer that really messes with your mind in the best kind of way. When poured, Westwood looks like a light golden ale but it’s without doubt a stout when you taste it. A milky bar stout. 3. NOTORIOUS F.I.G. (THE BEER FORMERLY KNOWN AS FIG DUBBEL) An absolute beauty of a beer. We first had a taste of this back in May during Leeds Indie Food when it was first brewed as a one off collaboration between Ilkley Brewery & George & Joseph cheese mongers, especially to pair with blue cheese. The great news is that they’re brewing it again & we plan on stockpiling it for Christmas (and yes we’ll be enjoying it with blue cheese again because the combination was downright mind-blowing.)

" WE WANT TO P

eacons began life in 2011, replacing a tired Moor Music Festival. After a turbulent start with the first festival being cancelled due to site flooding the day before, Beacons Festival came back brighter and hungrier. Three years in a field and having played host to Toots & the Maytals, Wild Beats, Django Django, Daughter, Action Bronson, Danny Brown and Darkside they decided to move it into the city. A brave move. 2015 saw nearly 4 months of shows as it helped launch Headrow House. Starting on 27th October the 2016 the format has been streamlined to great effect and features a line-up which boasts Dinosaur Jr opening up and Local Now in its 2nd year of Natives closing a series its current incarnation, of pioneering gigs. Ben Beacons Metro feels Lewis tells us more… like it’s really found its feet. Last year was a sprawling event that took in the whole Autumn, and although we had some amazing events and shows with the likes of Mac DeMarco, Everything Everything, Daniel Avery as well as debut shows in the North for exciting new artists like Nao, Mura Masa and Loyle Carner, it was a slightly incoherent concept. This year we’ve ironed out the premise and returned with a carefully put together 10 days of events. Picking up where the original Beacons left off, programming forward thinking and diverse acts, we’ve got huge acts like Dinosaur Jr and Local Natives playing alongside acts doing their first headline shows

in Leeds such as Cat’s Eyes and Anna Meredith and then grime acts like Lady Leshurr and Leeds favourites Hookworms playing a very special at Leeds Holy Trinity Church. To me it feels like this is the future of programming events, festivals and series like this, true diversity through the line-up. 4 guys playing guitars is done, and although many many people still go to see that, we want to push the envelope, indie bands next to composers next to MC’s next to producers playing all night DJ sets, it’s that kind of sentiment that we’re extremely proud of purveying and intend to be at the very forefront of bringing these kind of events to the North of the country. beaconsmetro.com

NEWS FUTURE TALES AND TRIBULATIONS

We’re delighted to welcome a couple of new bands onto the I Like Press roster, namely T.O.M.B, Furr, Esben and The Witch and We Were Strangers. Exciting things are afoot with plenty more to come.

Saturday the 15th October sees Northern Monk Brewery playing host to the Northern Craft Fair. Expect crafts galore from artists across the North & beyond plus you’ll be able to get crafty yourself and print your own tote bag with Awesome Merch.

16

The talented team at Oslo have whipped together a slick new website for us that we’re pretty damn proud of. Take a look at it when you get a moment, you might be pleasantly surprised at the range of skills we have to pay them bills.

Welcome to Leeds. —A platform to showcase the world class events, organisations and people in Leeds.

welcometoleeds.co.uk Further afield than Leeds is the Katatonia Shepherd’s Bush show on the 21st October. One of the break out stars of the deathdoom genre, they’ll be celebrating their 25th year as a band & 10 years since releasing Great Cold Distance which they’ll be playing in a special two-set show.

It’s no secret that we like to eat and that we’re rather major fans of the incredibly rich indie food scene in Leeds, so you can imagine how utterly thrilled we were to hear that two of our favourite Leeds spots – Ox Club and Bundobust, have been included in the 2017 Michelin Guide. Great to see the hard work & great food recognised by such a major force.

17

Frustratingly we can’t say too much about this next project, but we can tell you that we’re working with Welcome To Leeds to bring a unique take on Christmas to Leeds that goes beyond baubles and tinsel. Watch this space, or even better watch some of the most unlikely spaces in Leeds for enlightenment.

MONK The Chapter Hall is an event space available for private hire at Northern Monk. Housed in a Grade II listed building, The Chapter Hall boasts wrought iron pillars, exposed brick walls and flagstone floors. The space is the perfect blank canvas for events, whether it's a corporate away day or a personal celebration. This year The Chapter Hall has hosted our own events, including Mead Fest and the launch of Communion, a beer brewed in collaboration with Swedish band Opeth. It has also played home to gigs from Sofar Sounds, a global organisation that plan secret gigs in cities across the world, showcasing a variety of talented musicians. It has taken on a very special role for several couples who have chosen to celebrate their weddings with us, each shaping the room into their own unique space to share with friends and family. Colour Plus Noun transformed The Chapter Hall into a gallery, putting on a fabulous fully-licensed Monty Python Exhibition, curating pieces from illustrious artists and delighting film fans. And one of our favourite evenings has to be when The Real Junk Food Project joined us to host a pay-as-you-feel banquet as part of Leeds Indie Food Fest, a city wide celebration of food and drink culture. This event brought together complete strangers to break bread and enjoy a communal dining experience. If you are interested in using The Chapter Hall for your event please contact us on bookings@northernmonkbrewco.com

MUSIC THIS SOME MUSIC RELEASES

Exploded View

Opeth

Exploded View (Sacred Bones) Nico narrates a fever dream backed by an unlikely array of musicians. Exploded View is discordant, unnerving, haunting & hypnotic. It might just be the most unlikely new favourite you never expected.

Sorceress (Moderbolaget/ Nuclear Blast) Opeth deliver yet again, this time it’s clean vocals on an incredibly intricate and complex album. The one thing they do is never bore you, taking you on an unexpected experimental progressive journey that all makes complete sense at the time.

Rheia (Deathwish) A blackgaze emotional rollercoaster of pure catharsis that you willingly come back to ride again and again. 30th September

MONTH Darkthrone

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard

Arctic Thunder (Peaceville) Not going to lie, we were excited about this months ago & lucky for us, Arctic Thunder has justified the eager anticipation. It’s grim and dark with plenty of moments that remind of True Norwegian Black Metal like only Darkthrone can. FVNERALS Wounds (Golden Antenna Records)

14th October Y Proffwyd Dwyll (New Heavy Sounds) A monsterous beast of a doom album serving up epic riffs reminiscent of the very animal they’re named after trudging through a swamp that manages to take things to a beautiful next level with Jessica Ball’s vocals.

A doom laden ambient soundscape that manages to crush with its heavy, morbid bleakness whilst retaining a fragility. 14th October

Kirkstall Brewery/Zapato Brewing/Jumbo Records 45 RPM Pale Ale 4.5% ABV We’ve yet to have a disappointing beer from Zapato & this is a lovely hoppy pale ale, but more importantly here is the fact that this is a collaboration between a couple of Leeds greats in celebration of Jumbo Records’ 45th anniversary which is no small feat at all!
