曲目介紹 1. 旅行者 (Journey)：不要停止相信 (Don't Stop Believing) 20 世紀流行音樂中，數位音樂下載賣得最好的是旅行者樂隊於 1981 年的經典歌曲《不要停止相信》。 這首歌的靈感來源於鍵盤手 Jonathan Cain 父親對他的叮囑：“你要不停地相信自己，不然人生就完了。” 毫無疑問，這是個永恒的人生道理，而這首歌也被用於不少影視劇集，如《黑道家族》（The Sopranos） 和《歡樂合唱團》（Glee）裡。後者的主題正是青春、成長和競爭，“相信”永遠是年輕人關心的話題。 所以《歡樂合唱團》原班人馬演唱的《不要停止相信》大賣逾 50 萬份，也不奇怪了。

Pode ser surpreendente que, entre as músicas do século XX, é o clássico de 1981 de Journey “Don’t Stop Believing”, que teve as melhores vendas com downloads digitais. Mas isso é um facto. Com o tempo a passar, a canção ainda continua melhor do que nunca. É fácil perceber porquê. A canção nasceu de uma frase de motivação do pai do teclista Jonathan Cain, que sempre o encorajou, dizendo: “Não pare de acreditar ou você já ficou para trás, jovem.” Como um tema eternamente humano, foi incorporado em numerosas séries de TV e filmes, nomeadamente na última cena de os Sopranos e Glee. Ete último é sobre dedicado a temas da adolescência, o crescimento, e a competição, e “acreditar” é sempre uma preocupação para os jovens. Não admira que a gravação de Glee de “Don’t Stop Believing” tenha vendido mais de 500 000 cópias.

14. Beyond: Really Love You
A vida de um músico é supostamente pobre se ele/ela não se pode tornar num superstar. Aspirantes a músicos enfrentam sempre dificuldades financeiras e relacionais. Programme Notes 1. Journey: Don’t Stop Believing
It may be surprising that, among 20th century music, it is Journey’s 1981 classic “Don’t Stop Believing” that has sold best as digital downloads. But this is the fact. As time goes by, it even fares better than ever. It’s easy to see why. The song was born of a catchword of the keyboardist Jonathan Cain’s father, who always encouraged him by saying “Don't stop believing or you're done, dude.” As an everlasting human theme, it has been incorporated into a number of TV series and movies, notably the last scene of The Sopranos and Glee. The latter deals with themes of adolescence, growing up, and competition, and “believing” is always a concern for young people. No wonder Glee’s cast recording of “Don’t Stop Believing” sold more than 500,000 copies.
2. George Michael: Faith
The sudden death of George Michael, at the young age of 53, on Christmas day last year stunned his numerous admirers. For 35 years, this “pop superstar” “blessed with good looks and a fine singing voice” as described by BBC, seemed indefatigable in producing hits and giving to philanthropy. Among the hits is “Faith” from his debut solo album. Although described as one of Michael’s most simplistic songs, it nevertheless hits people with an unlikely organ introduction in contrast with a lively “Bo Didley beat.”
3. A-ha: Take on Me
Northern Europe has produced many unearthly musicians. The Norwegian band a-ha’s hit song “Take on Me”, from 1984, is not only high-flying in its vocal line, with the vocalist Morten Harket covering an impossible range of two and a half octaves, soaring up to high falsettos, but also very artistically produced in terms of harmony and the music video, both still quite refreshing after three decades. The video, now legendary, with its rotoscoping animation, won six awards in the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.

9. Emelia Rydberg: Big Big World
While the simple line “a big big girl in a big big world” in Emelia Rydberg’s song “Big Big World” touches the heartstrings of many young ladies, the 1998 ballad doesn’t really sound as big as the words, and so is the cover art with Emelia, then 20, sitting quietly, a little forlorn, with distant city background only vaguely distinguishable. Even so, self-assurance quietly expressed is a girl’s bold and treasured first step towards growth and independence.
10. The Beatles: Penny Lane
Penny Lane is both a place and a name. In Beatles’s 1967 song, it refers to an actual street in Liverpool, England, which was also an important bus terminal, and a square around it. Paul McCartney and John Lennon used to meet at the terminal to catch a bus downtown. Therefore this song is mainly a reminiscence of the time past, with references to puppy love. Penny Lane is also the name of the female protagonist in the movie Almost Famous about growing pains of an almost famous rock band and their fans, who include Penny Lane and a middle school student whom she falls in love with and who tries to catch up with and interview them.

The Doors was one of the most controversial and mercurial bands under its leader Jim Morrison, a charismatic but unpredictable legend fractured at the tender age of 27. They released 8 albums within 5 years from 1967 to 1971, the year Morrison died. All but one reached top 10 in Billboard 200, and the legend is still alive for more than 40 years after the band disbanded in 1973. “Light My Fire” is one of their favorites, with infinite loops of wild and agonizing harmony in the bass building up immense intensity. The mainly classical pianist Friedrich Gulda wrote an set of astonishing variations based on this bass figure.
12. Bruno Mars: Uptown Funk
A good theme song not only helps the popularity of a TV series; it may immortalize it. For the 2003 TVB series Triumph in the Skies, a story about loves and dreams in the aviation industry, the theme song titled “The Years like Songs”, composed by Peco Chui with lyrics by Lau Cheuk-Fai, fits the role exceedingly well with its heartfelt but soaring melodies and yearning lyrics.
“The days when brags weren’t humble and disco wasn’t retro” is the image created by the relative new song “Uptown Funk” produced by Mark Ronson in 2014 featuring Bruno Mars, which became a worldwide phenomenon with its major impact on pop culture. While getting its inspiration from the “Minneapolis sound” of 1980s-era funk music, in many aspects “Uptown Funk” may just be a lucky piece that did everything in the right proportion, which secures its omnipresence.

Hacken Lee, who will celebrate his 50th birthday this December, has been one of the best loved Hong Kong singers for almost three decades. Famed for unerring precision, Lee has received, as of 2015, 16 “Outstanding Pop Singer Award” at RTHK’s “Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards”. “Red Sun” was produced in 1992 during one of the downs in his career. Adapting Toshiyuki Tachikawa’s song “That Is Important” into “Red Sun” with Cantonese lyrics, Lee boosted his career with it. The song was soon taken up by the whole city, and its popularity has never waned.
6. David Bowie: Life on Mars
The death of the legendary British rock star David Bowie in January 2016 still sounds like a shocking piece of news to many. Always inventive and impersonating many characters throughout his career, Bowie developed an androgynous alter ego called “Ziggy Stardust” in early 1970s, and Mars became a favorite setting. “Life on Mars” was created before the official debut of Ziggy Stardust, but nevertheless its surreal lyrics about denied love and media has been described as “a cross between a Broadway musical and a Salvador Dalí painting.”
While in the year 1986 human beings were hardly as struggling in numbers as they are now in this truly digital age, the song “Digital Life” humorously describes the anxiety of living a life decided by numerical rises and falls supposedly in the stock market. Lyrics by Poon Yuen Leung and music by Denny Randell & Sandy Lizer, the music smartly assembles various trifles such as Bach’s Minuet in G for piano beginners, Alberti bass and early digital sounds.
14. Beyond: Really Love You
The life of a musician is supposedly poor if s/he cannot become a superstar. Aspiring musicians always face financial and relational difficulties. Support from parents, then, is probably the most treasured gift a musician can hope to receive. This was the case for Beyond, and their breakthrough song “Really Love You” is a tribute to band leader’s mother who unwaveringly supported them in their early years.
7. Carpenters: Close to You

The song “Close to You”, composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 1963 and made famous by the Carpenters in their 1970 album of the same title, already lasts longers than numerous classical pieces composed in the same year. It’s easy to see how the endearing images and melodies in the song attract generations of listeners. The harmonies that open the song are also close to magic. Throughout the years, the song has enjoyed numerous covers, and has been used in popular TV series including The Simpsons and The X Factor.
8. Bee Gees: Stayin’ Alive
There was a time when dancing was viewed as lewd. Saturday Nigh Fever, an 1977 American musicaldrama film, showcased otherwise: how music, dancing and subculture help the protagonist cope with harsh realities. Bee Gees’ song for it “Stayin’ Alive” straightforwardly deals with the issue of survival in the streets of New York. As Barry Gibb, one of the Bee Gees, recalled: “People crying out for help. Desperate songs. Those are the ones that become giants. The minute you capture that on record, it’s gold. ‘Stayin’ Alive’ is the epitome of that.” It still rings truth and thus stays.

Fundada em 1983, a Orquestra de Macau (OM) é uma orquestra profissional dependente do Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E de Macau. A Orquestra é actualmente um agrupamento eminente na Ásia, com um repertório que inclui clássicos chineses e ocidentais de todos os tempos. is now a distinguished orchestra of Asia, performing Chinese and Western classics throughout the times. It has also played a key role in the music and cultural life of Macao residents and overseas audiences.
In 2001, the Orchestra was extended into an orchestra with double winds; today, it has developed into a small-to-medium-sized orchestra of around 60 outstanding
musicians from more than ten countries and regions. In 2008, Maestro Lü Jia commenced his tenure as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestra,
initiating the convention of “Concert Seasons” and in each season 70 different concerts would be held, presenting to the public, comprehensively and systematically, classics from both Western and Chinese.
The Orchestra collaborates regularly with numerous internationally renowned
musicians, conductors and ensembles including Pláciado Domingo, Krystian Zimerman, Stephen Kovacevich, Boris Berezovsky, Leonidas Kavakos, Barry Douglas,
Iván Martín, Fou Ts’ong, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Sarah Chang, Ning Feng, Jian Wang, Tan Dun, Daniel Oren, the Teatro Regio Torino, the English National Ballet, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Latvian National Opera, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Korean Chamber Orchestra, etc. In addition, the Macao
Orchestra has regularly been invited to perform in Mainland China and overseas,
participating in the 2015 Austria Bruckner Festival as China’s representative and attending the music festival “La Folle Journee au Japon 2016” in Japan, leaving its
footprints in at least 30 cities across China as well as Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, the U.S.A., Japan and Korea, etc. The refined quality of the Orchestra is unanimously acclaimed, testifying to Macao Orchestra’s significance as a symbol of Macao’s prosperity as an international cultural city.
Meanwhile, the Orchestra has been endeavouring to invest in creativity and vitality in
terms of music education and community promotion, organising a series of “Music for All” concerts such as “Love Music, Catch Dream”, “Love Music, Share Joy”, and
“Love Music, Enjoy Arts”. The Orchestra also visits schools, community and the underprivileged groups in order to enlarge the audience base of classical music and even help young musicians realise their music dream.
