IIAD Presiential Address

As the saying goes “For it is in giving that we receive.” As we take a moment to stop and reflect, we can see just how true this is for our Association and its valued members. 2019 truly has been a year of “giving” back to others.

In this, our final print version of our IIAD Dallas Insurance Insider Magazine, I would like to highlight opportunities where the collective work of IIAD’s members has helped to impact the lives of those in our community. All are special reasons to celebrate during this Season of Giving.

UTD Scholarship Opportunities - through funds raised from our annual Clay Shoot, in September of this year we were able to donate $80,000 to fund scholarships for several deserving UTD Business/Insurance and Risk Management students.

North Texas Giving Day – Each year we earn spending amounts on the fund balance to be used for charitable giving. The Board elected to hold the spending amounts for the past couple of years and as a result this year were able to share $12,500 with five (5) very deserving charities – Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas, EQuest, Community Partners of Dallas, The Warren Center and Make-A-Wish.

Make a Wish Grant – For the first time, IIAD qualified for a $10,000 grant through Trusted Choice. This grant goes towards helping children and their families who are burdened with medical conditions to realize a special “wish.” We look forward to celebrating our recipient during IIAD’s February 12th monthly membership luncheon. Make a Wish Toy Drive – once again, you, our valued members demonstrated your giving hearts by donating a mountain of toys, games, bikes and balls during our IIAD Holiday Open House Party on December 5th. The large number of toys will be delivered to Make-A-Wish in time for those special Christmas wishes to be granted. That is $102,500 in giving $’s and a mound of toys and other gifts to bring smiles to many, all thanks to your giving hearts!

As another calendar year ends, I give thanks for our IIAD Staff, our Board, our valued members and all the volunteers who give of their time throughout the year. Your generosity will touch the lives of so many and is greatly appreciated. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”- Helen Keller.

Merry Christmas and Holiday Blessings from My Family to Yours…..

"For it is in giving that we receive.”

IIAD Executive Director Address

This is our last edition of the Dallas Insurance Insider. It has had a good run, but the Board has elected to shift the advertising focus from quarterly digital magazines to our new IIAD 365 mobile app, newsletters and social media advertising offerings starting in 2020. Various reasons are propelling this change, including a desire to provide our members with real-time information about the association, events and our industry.

Speaking of the mobile app, IIAD365 is available for download. We encourage you to add this to your app collection to help you track our calendar of events, register for events and connect with other members. Please see page 32 for details on how to download this to your smart phones. If you are interested in advertising with us, we have the following available: • Member of the Month – video or article • Website ads/links • Mobile app blasts • Blog posting • Social Media and email blasts • Newsletter advertising • Rotating Banner, Push notification or featured Sponsor ad on IIAD365 app

The ad kit can be found on our website, or contact Courtney (courtney@iiadallas.org) for more information.

As we approach the end of 2019, we begin to look forward to a new beginning. The calendar of all 2020 IIAD events is now on our website and app. Please take a moment to lock in all the important dates. In addition to our regular events and luncheons, IIAD members are entitled to three complimentary workshops designed to help you grow and protect your business: 3/10/20 Thompson Coe presents a 3-hour CE EPL seminar, including the latest regarding marijuana, gender identity and other hot new trends, to be held at IIAD 04/02/20 Chubb presents CE Day on Transportation with Doris Hoopes, to be held at IIAD. 04/28/20 Texas Mutual sponsors ½ day Agency Workshop on Producer Hiring/Training/Testing, by Robbie Smith of Smith McKenzie Consulting, Inc. to be held at Texas Mutual. Lastly, please consider how you can give back in 2020. We have wonderful opportunities for engagement within the association and our community, and a spot at the table awaits you. I wish you the very best for the coming year. Happy New Year!

Mark you Calendar for all of our 2020 Events!

IIAD's Emerging Leader Presidental Address

hank YouThan Thank YouTha nk You Thank Yo "Life's not about expecting, hoping and wishing, it's about doing, being and becoming." -Mike Dooley

Hello IIAD members! As the end of 2019 fast approaches, I can say with full confidence the Emerging Leaders are trending in the right direction. Our last social in October was a success with a great turnout at Sidecar Social. Special thanks to Imperial Finance for sponsoring, and for their continued support of EL. During Jim Millerman, our group was able to raise over $1,000 through the wine toss event. Thank you again to all who donated and participated. As a reminder, our fundraising efforts will be going to Make-A-Wish Foundation. This coming year, we plan to have 7 more social events so don’t miss out on these networking opportunities! Our philanthropic efforts will also be ramping up, and we will share dates and events as we secure them. The Emerging Leaders are excited for 2020 and seeing new member involvement and participation. As always, feel free to reach out to myself or any EL chair member with any questions. Thank you very much for your support!

MISSING MAN TABLE AND HONORS CEREMONY by: THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF POW/MIA FAMILIES As you entered the room, you may have noticed a special table; it is reserved to honor our missing men.

Set for six, the empty chairs represent Americans who were or are missing from each of the services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard – and civilians, all with us in spirit.

Some here were very young, or not yet born, when the Vietnam War began; however, all Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call and served the cause of freedom in a special way. Let me explain the meaning of this table, and then join me for a moment of silent prayer. The table is round – to show our everlasting concern.

The cloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve.

The single red rose reminds us of the lives of these Americans….and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, while seeking answers.

The yellow ribbon symbolizes our continued uncertainty, hope for their return and determination to account for them. A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured or missing in a foreign land. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families. The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The glass is inverted – to symbolize their inability to share a toast.

The chairs are/chair is empty – they are missing…………….. (moment of silence)

Let us now raise our water glasses in a toast to honor America’s POW/MIAs, to the success of our efforts to account for them, and to the safety of all now serving our nation!

Did you miss our 2019 JMIC Speakers?

We started the day with Professional Sport Bass Fisherman Clay Dyer’s presentation of "If I can you can". Clay Dyer was born on May 23, 1978, without any lower limbs, no arm on his left side and a partial arm on the right. However, these limitations did not dampen his determination and positive spirit. Clay began fishing at age 5. A natural competitiveness became evident early. Clay never allowed his physical disabilities to be an obstacle and began competing in fishing tournaments at age 15. He fished with FLW from 2000 to 2010 and began his career with BASS in 2012.

After Clay's speech he led a panel discussion with others that have also overcome significant obstacles that allowed them to be the best version of themselves. Panelists included Dr. Enya He of Lloyds , Evelyn Rawls of Chubb, and Adam Sammons of MHBT. During the panel discussion we learned more about the people we work very closely with. Enya grew up in the ghetto of China, facing poverty and hunger.Evelyn was abandoned by her parents and grew up in an orphanage. Lastly we learned about Adam’s obstacles at losing his dad at a young age and how his mom was diagnosed with bi-polar, forcing Adam to handle family matters that teens typically don’t have to encounter. They shared how their faith gave them the strength and courage to face their trials then, which shapes how they relate to others now

Our Keynote Speaker, Keni Thomas, was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge from the U.S. Army. Keni gave a personal account of his experience in the chaotic 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, Black Hawk Down, to express a unique set of leadership lessons and inspired view of life’s greater purpose. “You do what needs to be done right then and there, because someone is counting on you. And if you don’t step up, who will?” Keni ended his speech with a song he had written accompanied on his guitar. And then one last nugget from Keni, “Please don’t believe what you hear on the news. We are not a divided nation. Disagreement is an opportunity for discussion. It does not mean we are divided. God Bless America!”

For the first time, IIAD has been awarded a $10,000 Trusted Choice grant to provide to our local Make-a-Wish to sponsor a child’s wish, compared to the previous $7,500 grants. A presentation of the award was made on November 7th during the IIAD Jim Millerman Insurance Convention. On hand to accept the grant from Make-a-Wish North Texas were Ashley Ammerman, Director of Mission Integration and Sterling Watson. Sterling Watson has been an ambassador for Make-a-Wish since his wish to BE the President of the United States in 2006. Sterling is now 25 and is an active volunteer, wish granter and ambassador for Make-A-Wish. With our theme being patriotic, he came as President Sterling and give a quick synopsis of his wish then followed up with an Invocation.
