IIAD President COVERICA

Seasons Change…. yes, it is that time of the year when our students return to school after a summer of fun in the sun, vacations wind down and schedules are more routine. As summer slowly turns to autumn, it is also the time of year when we say “thank you” to the past year’s IIAD Boards and “welcome” to the incoming Boards. This month’s Officer Installation Luncheon was a special celebration of all the above. A heartfelt thank you to Tammy and the IIAD Staff for your creative efforts in hosting such an event. Together, with many volunteers, you always contribute so much throughout the year, from the Jim Millerman Insurance Convention, to our annual golf tournament and clay shoot, to the Make-A-Wish send-off and beyond.

As we look forward to the 2019 – 2020 Association Year, I would like to remind everyone we are blessed to serve in such a noble industry and that “together we can” continue to make a difference. We encourage you to join us along the way as we strive to live out the IIAD Mission Statement: Serving and Strengthening Independent Agents through Education, Perpetuation and Promotion of Goodwill. As the saying goes “It takes a village.” In the case of IIAD, it takes a village of volunteers – won’t you come and join us? As this year’s incoming IIAD President, I look forward to the opportunity to visit with you. The opportunity to share ideas, hear your feedback and together with the Board, Tammy and her Team, discover even more ways the IIAD can better serve you, our valued members.

TOGETHER WE CAN!!

Independent Insurance Agents of Dallas IIAD will host our third Sporting Clays event on 9/10/19 at the Dallas Gun Club. This event was established for the purpose of generating a revenue stream for an IIAD Scholarship. The goal is to fully support students pursuing a degree in Insurance/Risk Management. The first two Clay shoots have netted a total just under $60,000, and we are optimistic that we will net another $40,000 with the upcoming Tournament. Dedicating much time, research and deliberation, the IIAD board has settled on funding for an Opportunity Fund endowment to UTD’s Risk Management and Insurance program to be matched by their dean. We are putting the finishing touches on the actual IIAD Scholarship Fund with the UTD Risk Management/Insurance Program and will announce the details soon. The IIAD’s Jim Millerman Insurance Convention is November 7th at the Irving Convention Center. This year’s theme, “Together we Can” will have a 1940’s patriotic feel to it. Divisiveness is on full throttle in our country, but our 136-year-old Association thrives because people work together in it and through it. This year, we are changing things up based on feedback from our members. The agenda carves out deliberate time for the tradeshow and provides an opportunity for EVERYONE to hear the fantastic speakers. There will also be a separate social starting at 3 PM at The Thirsty Lion (part of the Toyota Music Factory complex), with shuttles for attendees.

7

What great speakers, you ask? For starters, we will open the day with Clay Dyer. Clay is a professional sport fisherman, who was born without any lower limbs, no arm on the left, and a partial arm on his right. His motto for life is, “If I can, you can”. Clay will also lead a panel of folks in our industry who have also overcome significant obstacles in life. This panel features Enya He of Lloyds, Evelyn Rawls of Chubb and Adam Sammons of MHBT, a Marsh McClennan Agency. Our Keynote luncheon speaker is Keni Thomas. Keni is an American country music singer and former US Army Ranger. Thomas was a member of Task Force Ranger as part of Operation Restore Hope in Somalia and served in the Battle of Mogadishu, subject of the movie “Black Hawk Down”. You will be captivated by his story. Please join us on November 7th for our annual signature event. I promise, you will not want to miss it!

On August 21st, IIAD held their annual Installation luncheon at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, TX. The luncheon introduced new officers as well as honoring the outgoing President Stephen Pine. The morning CE was provided by Enya He who is the South Central US Regional Director of Lloyd’s. At the luncheon, Director Tammy Land interviewed Stephen Pine and presented him with gifts to thank him for his work. Chairman and CEO of CoVerica Mike Sterlacci gave a short speech expressing his appreciation and confidence in new IIAD President Rhonda Cox. Sterlacci spoke of Cox saying “Without reservation Rhonda has been a shining example of supreme competence, patience, teach-ability and most importantly, most effective as our operations chief. I am in awe of her abilities to accomplish what is needed, while reminding us, as best stated by Ronald Reagan that "There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit." After Rhonda was introduced and interviewed, she named the new IIAD & IES board members, and provided her reflections on the accomplishments of IIAD, and commitment those before her have made to the mission of IIAD. A humble leader, she gave thanks to God for blessing her life and leading her to such a noble profession that has been a part of her life for 30+ years. A big thank you to all of those who participated and made this event happen!

Stephen,

Incase you missed it, here are excerpts from our special tribute to our outgoing IIAD President, Stephen Pine. You have been a joy to work with in every way, but I think hearing you sing and play air guitar to Gun’s and Roses “Sweet Child of Mine” on 6th Street was a highlight for me. I gifted you with a few items at the Luncheon that have been hand picked just for you. First, as a reminder the Hula dance that you learned for Koah’s Make-A-Wish send-off party, I have a special coconut planter for your new office. By the way, don’t quit your day job. Dancing isn’t your thing. Although we loved the effort!

Stephen Pine and Ben Patterson learning the Hula at the Make-a-Wish Luncheon.

Stephen showing off his new favorite tee shirt.

Next, I have something I know you will really like. Who knows what Stephen’s favorite SEC Team is? I'm sure everyone is well aware by now that he is a huge Alabama Fan! And recently, I learned just how very much Stephen loves Tee-shirts! We were discussing the possibility of buying IIAD logo’d tees, and Stephen couldn’t have been less enthusiastic, stating that he purges teeshirts on a weekly basis. So, of course, i had to get him a very special tee shirt to remember us by! Lastly, we admire your dedication to your physique. I often catch Stephen looking in the office mirrors while flexing. It’s important for you to know that Stephen is a professional weightlifter, so you can understand the meaning behind this last gift. Because we are in insurance, we don’t want you to get hurt…ever! Well We special ordered a leather weight lifting belt with the IIAD logo on it so you will always remember that we've got your back! We love you and your leadership this past year and hope you don’t short time us. You encouraged everyone to get involved with IIAD for the benefit of our industry, and you set the finest example. Thank you for all of your hard work and motivation that you gifted us over the past term! -Tammy Land, IIAD Executive Director & the IIAD Staff

The Battle for the Heart of Personal Lines Insurance Bodie SpanglerSenior

Territory Manager/Dallas County

Collectively and individually as independent agents, you have what my mom calls “starch.” That’s a good thing too because you need it like never before. Independent agents and the companies they represent are in a very real battle. The stakes are high as direct writers gobble up personal lines market share from captive agencies while simultaneously plotting ways to win independent agency customers. The 2017 Market Share Report from the Independent Insurance Agents of America noted that the direct to consumer personal lines channel almost doubled in size, growing its market share from 9.6% to 16.2% between 2010 and 2015. Over the last few years, that number has continued to grow. The same report showed that the Independent Agent channel “held on” to their 35.5% market share over the same five-year time period while the Captive channel continued to lose market share, falling below 50% for the first time. When I started my insurance career 25 years ago, the Captive channel controlled two thirds of the personal lines market. When considering the market share of each channel and the trajectory of all three, even a casual observer would notice that the biggest threat to independent agencies in personal lines is the rapidly growing direct to consumer market. It isn’t too hard to figure out why that channel is growing either. Just turn on the television today or flip on the radio and you will be bombarded by direct to consumer insurance commercials telling prospective customers that they can save them all kinds of money if they will just give them 15 minutes of their time. They tell customers that they can name their own price, but barely mention value or coverage. They have, in effect, commoditized the product. The commercials are well done and they work. This decades long campaign has gone a long way in convincing the general public that the most important component of personal lines insurance is price. This tactic coupled with the ease of access to quoting mechanisms that cut the agent out of the equation altogether has delivered a one-two punch to the Independent Agent channel. The personal lines insurance industry is no doubt changing but change always brings opportunity. My hope as we consider this opportunity is that we will be encouraged to develop a passion for this industry and our roles in it, and that we will be prompted to pursue the product knowledge that will enable us to compete in this increasingly competitive environment. I hope that you will not only be energized to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity that is before you, but that you will also find strength in the challenge that your day-in and day-out work brings. My good friend, Ben Patterson, past President of the IIAD and a Partner at Patterson & Associates in Richardson, gave me his perspective during a visit recently when I asked him about the state of the market and the changes taking place in personal lines. This is what he told me: “The growth of direct carriers and the shrinking captive agency channel has created a huge advantage and opportunity for us if we will continue to adapt, change, develop, and constantly improve. That will set us or any agency willing to do that apart from the agencies that don’t. The current market conditions give us a massive opportunity to separate ourselves from the pack. The harder it becomes, the fewer there are who are willing to do it… and the greater the prize.” I love that last part of what Ben said most of all: “The harder it becomes, the fewer there are who are willing to do it… and the greater the prize.” Navy SEALS, professional athletes, CEO’s -- and yes, independent agents willing to take the hard road – are all examples of people who pursue the greater prize. The conversation I had with Ben is part of the ongoing “constant conversation” I have with all of you and the “constant conversation” you have with your customers as you work to sell a value driven product in a price driven market. As you consider all of this, I encourage you to remember that anyone can sell on price, but it takes a talented salesperson to coach, teach, and counsel his or her customers in a way that helps them understand the difference between the upfront price of a product and the long term cost of insurance decisions. The best part about that market condition is that nobody sells value better than an independent agent. From my first day on the job at Safeco in 1994 through today, I can’t think of a more exciting time to be an independent agent in personal lines or a more exciting time to be working with them.

My Experience at IIAD by Makayla Twigg

IIAD's Courtney Erskine enjoying the Golf Tournament with Makayla

The IIAD staff indulging before the big Golf Tournament

This summer I have had the pleasure of interning with IIAD. Just a few short months ago in May, I graduated from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Last summer, however, I did an internship at a news station and realized that wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. With that realization, life after graduation was not how I had imagined it. I had a desire to get into marketing and communications but a degree that was not in business. I then began to search around for internships in marketing and was blessed with the opportunity at IIAD. During my time here this summer, I have been able to work on a number of projects. Some of which allowed me to get more experience in skills I already have and some working on things that I haven’t had much experience doing. I have created videos at events such as the golf tournament and luncheons. I also have worked on designing media for social media platforms, the magazine, and newsletters. My favorite project from this summer has been the intern interviews that I conducted with interns from various agencies. I traveled to three different agencies to talk to interns about their experiences. I loved talking to the interns as well as getting to make creative videos of our conversations. I am now headed to Little Rock, AR to work for Life Strategies Counseling as their Community Marketing Coordinator and will begin grad school this fall online at Liberty University. I am extremely grateful for my time here at IIAD and I'm thankful for every single experience that I have had here. A special thank you to Tammy, Courtney, Noemi, and John for all of the time and wisdom you have given to me. I’ll never forget anything that you all have done for me!

Welcome, Oscar! We are so excited to welcome Oscar Silva as the 2019-2020 Emerging Leaders president! He has big plans to make the Networking Events become the most attended event of the month. Oscar's ability to make friends with anyone has already proven to be his greatest resource as the attendance at our August Social was the largest it had been in a while. He also has big plans to get more involved with local college graduates looking to find a career in the Insurance Industry.

Oscar Silva, Tammy Land, and Rhonda Cox

Oscar has already implemented a change in the Emerging Leaders charity for this year's fundraising to Make-a-Wish North Texas. They will continue volunteering their time to previous chosen charity, CitySquare, but as a group decided to donate their fundraising at the end of the year to Make-a-Wish. We are so excited to see what this year has in store for Oscar and the Emerging Leaders!

24

Emerging Leaders in Action! Our group of Emerging Leaders were able to make two donations from their 2018-2019 fundraising efforts. One was to their 2018-2019 charity CitySquare for $1,100. CitySquare is a broad community development organization offering a comprehensive array of social services that address four key areas related to the persistence of poverty: hunger, health, housing, and hope. Together, their 22 social service programs provide more than 50,000 human touches in Dallas, Waco, and Paris, Texas.

Courtney Erskine, Tammy Land, Alexia Reddick, Philip Lawson, Morgan Wade, Sam Best, and CitySquare Rep. Matt McBride.

Another donation was made to their 2019-2020 charity Make-a-Wish of North Texas for $500. While this is just a start for them, the group toured the newly renovated facility and learned of way they can get involved in the future! Look out for future volunteer events for Make-a-Wish.

My FCCI Insurance Group Internship Experience by Kristie Tran

insurancenerds.com. August 2019 https://insnerds.com/my-fcci-insurance-group-internship-experience/?tl_inbound=1&tl_target_all=1&tl_period_type=3

As a young child, I was always asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I never knew how to answer the question and every time someone asked me, I had a different answer. The one career choice I never thought would be an option was in Insurance. At the beginning of my 3rd year of college, I had transferred to The University of Texas at Dallas not knowing what major to choose. I had eventually declared my major in Marketing because I saw how the world is innovating in the realm of technology and found interest in that. Still, I was unsure if that was a career path I wanted to pursue in for the rest of my life. A peer who recently graduated persuaded me to join the Risk Management and Insurance organization on campus, which opened new doors for me like it did for him. I knew in my heart I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to help and educate others and to implement fresh ideas. My internship with FCCI Insurance Group allowed me to do that and much more, far exceeding my expectations. The more knowledge I gained through professional development and my academics, I realized how important it is to grow my network and build relationships. At FCCI, I learned how rich culture and core values are both important within the company in order to sustain growth in their employees and profitability. These core values are: loyalty, integrity, vision, excellence, and service. In the book, “A Legacy of Trust, The Story of FCCI,” by E.L. Wilks, he mentions, “We live by these core values, and each of these core values lives in us.”Through my 8 weeks of interning with FCCI, I have obtained a better insight in the industry. I received training in all departments including Underwriting, Claims, Risk Control, Surety, Special Investigations Unit, Agri-business, and Inland Marine. Different projects that were assigned to me, such as the “Quote Not Taken,” helped me to become familiarized with insurance lingo. I learned the process of underwriting a new business application versus renewing an existing piece of business. I was given the opportunity to be a part of virtual conference calls with colleagues and interns from other regional offices. The agency visits provided exposure to additional roles at the agency which helped me understand the Business Development Specialist role and how important it is. Within claims, I was introduced to an attorney to discuss about ongoing claims and what we can do as a carrier to execute a “win.” I also had the opportunity to meet with an accident re-constructionist to learn about the programs used to reconstruct an auto accident, providing a clearer understanding of the case. I was also given some time to market FCCI to future interns by creating a handbook for the Southwest Regional Office. The information I gathered included an overview of FCCI, a head shot of everyone, their contact information, and “fun facts” about themselves. I felt that this was a wonderful way for interns to connect with team members before the internship even begins. This handbook is a source interns can use as a conversation starter. My summer internship at FCCI provided me the perfect amount of exposure I needed to paint a picture of what goes on in the insurance world. During my internship, I have faced and conquered many challenges. I still remember my very first day of interning when I had the hardest time finding the entrance to the parking garage. I kept circling around the building until I finally found it. I still reminisce about the first day I walked through the revolving doors and saw how friendly the people were as I made my way up to the 10th floor. During the progression of my internship, every person I encountered became a mentor to me. They made themselves available when I had questions or needed them to elaborate on a specific topic. All in all, I can vouch that FCCI Insurance Group stays true to what they stand for.I would like to personally say thank you to Sheila Kemp (who was my first point of contact from FCCI), for her approachable personality, and getting me excited about the Insurance industry early on in my academics. Thank you, Tracey Pfab and Don Saetre for always having your doors open, encouraging me to ask questions and emphasizing, “no question is a dumb question.” Thank you, Pete Duncan, Greg Galloway, Erveis Cortez, and Jessica Mead for your enthusiasm, making each day of the internship, another day to look forward to. I would also like to say thank you, again, to Tony LaRocca, Cathy Vasquez, Javier Contreras, and Greg Hare for interviewing me back in February and believing in me enough, to give me the opportunity to intern with FCCI.Thank you, FCCI, for providing an unforgettable internship experience!
