Message from the IHMRI Chair 2016-2017 marks a turning point in the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute’s (IHMRI) development as an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI). It was a period to acknowledge our significant achievements to date, but also a time to plan for our long-term future.

Creative ideas and strategic thinking will help IHMRI quickly respond to dynamic and competitive conditions for health and medical research in Australia.

Since 2010, the success rate of applications for NHMRC project grants has steadily declined, with a corresponding increase in high quality applications. This in turn changes how review panels evaluate research proposals. Funding bodies are now favouring collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects that demonstrate value to the Australian economy by addressing major health challenges.

To ensure continued growth and success for IHMRI in this funding environment, the Executive Management Team of Professor David J. Adams, Professor Leonard Arnolda and new Chief Operating Officer, Kara Lamond, delivered a series of high-level activities.

Major achievements included the finalisation of a new Strategic Plan for 2017-2021 and the development of a new Research Strategy for 2017-2019. The latter, when finalised, will broaden the scope of IHMRI’s operations to encompass health analytics and commercialisation. The establishment of the Clinical Research and Trials Unit at Wollongong Hospital will also assist in supporting IHMRI’s translational approach to research.

Gender inequality in health and medical research, and the loss of women from senior research roles is well documented in Australia and internationally. I applaud IHMRI for striving to address this pressing issue with the Dame Bridget Ogilvie Awards and Scholarships, an initiative named in honour of IHMRI’s Patron, Dame Bridget Ogilvie AC, DBE, SCD, FRS, FAA, to recognise, support and celebrate women researchers in our region.

I would like to thank my fellow IHMRI Board members for their direction and stewardship of IHMRI. I would also like to thank the Executive Management Team for their drive and expertise. It is very satisfying to see we have the right mix of people, infrastructure funding, facilities and partners to advance IHMRI’s vision of a healthier Illawarra community.

The important groundwork conducted throughout 2016-2017 will help IHMRI consolidate its position as the key facilitator of health and medical research in the region, together with our founding partners, the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).

Message from the Chief Executive of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) extends about 250km along the coastal strip from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south, servicing a population of more than 400,000 residents.

ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 7,300 across eight hospital sites and 45 community health services, with an annual budget of more than $850 million.

Research is key to improving health and patient care, especially when our region faces a high incidence of chronic disease. Our staff need to continuously expand beyond current knowledge and practices, and test new ways of doing things. This is why ISLHD remains committed to being a strong partner of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institite (IHMRI), as we have done since 2008.

IHMRI provides clinicians with access to the research expertise of University of Wollongong (UOW) academics, who are some of the finest researchers in Australia. Clinicians also gain access to IHMRI’s state-of-the-art laboratories and clinical trial spaces, as well as the support of highly experienced technical services and clinical trials staff in IHMRI’s Operations Team.

However, it is not just a one-way street when it comes to the sharing of information and skills. Our clinician researchers provide academics with unique and practical insights into the clinical challenges of health service delivery, and the health issues of people living in the region. Together, we can have a major impact on growing clinical translational research towards improving health service delivery and outcomes for our community.

I am pleased at the way IHMRI unites academics and clinicians and believe there is a real commitment to grow these relationships.

I want to thank Professor Leonard Arnolda for his dedication and advice. Together we are making progress. The establishment of the new Clinical Research and Trials Unit at Wollongong Hospital is an exciting new phase, as it will help doctors get more involved in research and connect hospital patients with the latest treatments.

I am very excited to work as a partner of IHMRI into the future as we strengthen the research culture within our facilities and services.

Message from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong In just over 40 years, the University of Wollongong (UOW) has become a benchmark for Australia’s new generation of universities: dynamic, agile, innovative and prominent in national and international rankings for the quality of our research and teaching.

From 3D bioprinting, materials engineering and medicinal chemistry to social transformation, UOW’s major research facilities and strengths are working assiduously to solve complex, real-world problems. In the past 15 years, our research program has attracted almost $1 billion in competitive funding. That is one billion dollars making an impact on our region, our country and our world every day.

The combination of academic and clinician skills that IHMRI harnesses also leads to unique collaborations and innovative new treatments, such as the new chemotherapy drug, Deflexifol, which is currently in stage two clinical trials, and wearable technology such as the intelligent knee sleeve.

As a founding partner with ISLHD, UOW has supported IHMRI since its inception. I am looking forward to the many discoveries and breakthroughs by IHMRI affiliated researchers in the future. I take great pride that together we are developing the Illawarra into a world-class centre of excellence in health and medical research.

The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) plays a crucial role in elevating UOW’s national and international reputation in health and medicine, not just for basic scientific research, but translational research that improves the quality of health services.

By connecting UOW academics with clinicians in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), IHMRI ensures that our researchers focus on real world solutions, and remain informed about the most pressing health challenges facing our communities.

This in turn helps UOW researchers meet the practical outcomes now required by government funding agencies. Thanks to IHMRI’s support and coordination of research and clinical trials, UOW remains well equipped to maintain our profile in an increasingly competitive environment for health and medical research grants.

Message from the Executive Director of IHMRI The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) is a notfor-profit charity that supports health and medical researchers from the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).

We provide our affiliated researchers with a range of services so that they can focus on finding better ways to treat disease and illness, such as cancer, mental illness, dementia and diabetes.

These services include access to IHMRI grant schemes and funding, use of laboratories and equipment, assistance with clinical trials, as well as networking events to bring together academics and clinicians.

2016-2017 has been a dynamic period for IHMRI as we prepare for the next phase of our evolution.

A pivotal achievement has been the establishment of partnerships with other Medical Research Institutes (MRI) with complementary research strengths, including the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the Ingham Institute of Applied Medical Research. Such partnerships will not only facilitate research collaboration, but will also support the NUW Alliance between UOW, the University of Newcastle and the University of New South Wales.

In August 2016, IHMRI appointed Kara Lamond as Chief Operating Officer. She has been instrumental in the development of IHMRI’s new Strategic Plan for 2017-2021 and a new Communications and Marketing Strategy for 2017-2019.

In early 2017, I appointed a new Scientific Advisory Committee to provide advice on IHMRI’s research priorities and strengths, as well as guidance on funding opportunities. We also embarked on the development of a new Research Strategy, which will launch IHMRI into a new era of commercialisation and entrepreneurship, and provide more opportunities for researchers to improve their skills.

I look forward to the implementation of our new strategies. I want IHMRI to be renowned internationally for translational research, to attract and retain the best researchers, to collaborate with other prominent MRIs, and improve philanthropic support through increased community awareness.

I would like to thank our founding partners—UOW and ISLHD—for their continued support and recognition of IHMRI as an independent Medical Research Institute (MRI).

As we move through a time of growth and change, I would also like to thank our Board for their direction and advice, Professor Leonard Arnolda, IHMRI’s Clinical Director, for his leadership of research within ISLHD, as well as our dedicated Operations Team.

Message from the Clinical Director of IHMRI The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) brings together scientists, clinicians and health professionals from around the region, and around the world.

Diversity is our strength—our researchers come from a range of backgrounds. What binds us together is our desire to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in the Illawarra.

While the work of our researchers is locally relevant, it resonates well beyond the borders of our region. Our success springs from our translational approach to research. We want new knowledge converted into new treatments for patients as quickly as possible.

IHMRI supports health and medical researchers at every stage of their career, whether based in a laboratory or in a hospital ward.

We also help researchers collaborate with each other so that new projects can flourish and deliver tangible outcomes.

I am now in my second year at the helm as Clinical Director of IHMRI, working alongside Professor David J. Adams, and my colleagues at the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), to build a vibrant and strong research culture within the region’s hospitals. In addition to the ongoing management of over a hundred ISLHD research projects, together we have achieved significant goals.

The establishment of a Clinical Research and Trials Unit (CRTU) at Wollongong Hospital will help attract more clinicians to research. I would like to thank everyone who made the CRTU possible.

IHMRI will now have a physical presence close to where clinicians work and patients are treated. The CRTU will be available to all ISLHD employees and provides an opportunity for staff to gain experience in running a clinical trial.

The new Graduate Certificate in Health Research at the University of Wollongong (UOW) is another significant achievement, as it will help clinicians get started in research. We have also forged new connections between academics, clinicians and the community with a range of networking and research events, such as the Aboriginal Healthy Hearts Research Workshop.

Finally, I would like to thank the ISLHD Board and Executive for committing a significant level of resources into research infrastructure, such as the Centre for Health Research Illawarra Shoalhaven Population (CHRISP), an information platform to connect data for health and medical research in the Illawarra.

Our multidisciplinary researchers work within and across three broad research themes.

Diagnostics and therapeutics Researchers in this theme explore the fundamental mechanisms of disease.

They use this knowledge to design, test and evaluate new drugs as well as medical devices. They work together to increase treatment options and quality of life for patients with complex medical conditions.

Researchers in this theme examine the mechanisms, causes, prevention and treatment of a wide range of chronic and complex psychiatric illnesses, neurodegenerative diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders. Together they seek to address the burden of mental illness and neurodegenerative diseases in the region.

Chronic conditions and lifestyle Researchers in this theme study the links between disease and lifestyle risk factors, such as excess weight, poor diet, high blood pressure, drug addictions and physical inactivity. They work together to find better treatments and prevention strategies to extend healthy ageing.

How does long-term cannabis use effect health and wellbeing?

IHMRI researcher to map brain changes associated with cannabis dependence Professor Nadia Solowij, from the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Psychology, received a project grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for a four-year project to assess changes in brain structure and function associated with long-term cannabis use and dependence.

The study involves mapping the changes that occur in the brains of regular and heavy users of cannabis over a 12 month period, and then comparing these brain changes to real world functioning and quality of life.

“Previous work has focussed on the levels of cannabis use, whereas this study acknowledges that some people can use cannabis frequently without significant impairment while others develop addiction

“This study will help to identify new treatment targets and develop a new neural model of cannabis addiction.”

and a range of poor functional outcomes,” Professor Solowij said.

The project team, including partners at Monash University and the University of New South Wales National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, will test the models of addiction used in neuroscience that have been applied to other drugs, but never examined in cannabis users.

“We will characterise, for the first time, the brain alterations associated with cannabis dependence relative to regular recreational use via advanced imaging techniques and examine links between neural alterations and quality of life,” Professor Solowij said.

“This study will help to identify new treatment targets and develop a new neural model of cannabis addiction.”

Over 13 million people worldwide have severe cannabis use disorders, yet only a fraction seek treatment. Without medical help, sufferers may experience poor mental health, problems with cognition and motivation, as well as a decline in general wellbeing.

Professor Solowij said that despite the current interest in medicinal cannabis and her own ongoing involvement in such studies, a balanced research program is required to understand both the harms and the benefits that users experience.

Australia’s largest suicide prevention trial Illawarra Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Collaborative IHMRI researchers are involved in Australia’s largest integrated suicide prevention program, which is expected to reduce suicide deaths by 20 per cent and suicide attempts by 30 per cent.

The new approach to suicide prevention, developed by researchers at Black Dog Institute and the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Suicide Prevention (CRESP), is being trialled in four selected locations across NSW, including the Illawarra Shoalhaven.

Called Lifespan, this evidence-based ‘systems approach’ involves the simultaneous implementation of nine strategies proven

to reduce suicide. These include: improved access to mental health care, quality education programs for people at the front line (emergency staff, teachers, GPs), minimising access to lethal means and encouraging safe conversations about suicide in schools, workplaces and communities.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Collaborative implemented Lifespan in the region in February 2017.

The Collaborative, which was established in 2015, consists of representatives from the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s (ISLHD) mental health services, UOW, IHMRI, Grand Pacific Health, Lifeline South Coast and Coordinare, as well as more than 20 local community organisations.

Executive member of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Collaborative, IHMRI researcher and clinical psychologist Professor Brin Grenyer, from UOW’s School of Psychology, stated: “This is an area where we need a whole of community approach—so it is a delight to work alongside more than 20 local groups in the Collaborative who are all committed to suicide prevention. Our partnership with the local community and the Lifespan team gives us the best opportunity to make a difference.”

Other IHMRI researchers involved in the implementation of the program include Professor Frank Deane, Associate Professor Vida Bliokas, Associate Professor Mitch Byrne and Dr Coralie Wilson.

Do healthier guts mean healthier minds?

Workshop unites academic and clinician researchers On 6 June 2017 over 70 academic and clinician researchers from a range of disciplines got together for a workshop at UOW to focus on a rapidly developing field of study—the impact of gut microbiota on the brain and behaviour.

The workshop was the first step in developing a collaborative research group focussed on the Gut-Brain Axis in Metabolic Control.

Alterations in gut microbial composition is associated with marked changes in behaviours relevant to mood, pain and cognition.

Dysfunction of the microbiome-brain-gut axis has been implicated in stress-related disorders such as depression, anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism The workshop featured a range of IHMRI researchers, including Senior Professor Xu-Feng Huang, Associate Professor Eleanor Beck, Associate Professor Jenny McDonald, and PhD candidate, Kelly Lambert. They were joined by special guest, Dr Alena Rinke from the University of Queensland.

Topics discussed included dietary fibre, short chain fatty acids, gut inflammation, renal disease and cognition, dietary seaweed, and innovative techniques for examining the microbiome.

Can omega-3 reduce violence in prisons?

NHMRC Partnership Grant for landmark study In July 2016 a project led by Professor Barbara Meyer from the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Medicine received a Partnership Grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

This collaborative project also involves researchers from the University of Newcastle and the University of NSW, as well as funding and support from both the New South Wales and South Australian Corrective Services Departments and Norwegian seafood company Rimfrost.

The grant is for a five-year study to see if omega-3 supplements can reduce violence in people living in jail. The study will include a 16 week randomised control trial in six prisons in New South Wales and South Australia.

The research builds on a pilot study of 136 male volunteers at the NSW South Coast Correctional Centre in Nowra, which identified that prison inmates who are low in omega-3s are more aggressive and more likely to display attention deficit disorder (ADD) behaviours.

“Nutrition is emerging as a significant yet under recognised contributor to mental health and behaviour and omega-3s in particular have pivotal roles in brain function,” said Professor Meyer.

As part of the study, 600 volunteer inmates at six centres across New South Wales and South Australia will receive either an omega-3 supplement or a placebo oil daily for 16 weeks. The researchers will measure omega-3 blood levels, aggressive behaviour and aggressive attitudes both before and after the inmates take the supplements.

The study will take place in a double blind randomised control environment—neither

the researchers nor the inmates know who is receiving the placebo.

Should the intervention be successful in reducing aggressive behaviour by 25 per cent, the researchers expect to see an eight per cent reduction in inmate assaults, which conservatively translates to $236M in cost savings per year. It also has the potential to reduce violent reoffending if omega-3 use is continued after release.

The project, which is five years in the making, originated from early discussions with UOW Shoalhaven sustainable seafood expert Dr Pia Winberg and Nutritionist Dr Natalie Parletta, from the University of South Australia, and support from Blue BioTech Shoalhaven.

As it evolved, the project team brought in UOW Clinical and Forensic Psychologist, Associate Professor Mitch Byrne, and now involves collaborations with a number of other experts and industry partners.

The keynote guest speaker was Professor Alex Brown, a medical doctor originally from the Shoalhaven who is now Leader of the Aboriginal Health Unit at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).

He was joined by Pauline Brown, Director Aboriginal Health Strategy, at ISLHD, as well as Dr Scott Winch, Academic Leader, Indigenous Health, at UOW. In addition to local Aboriginal people who have heart disease, other speakers included:

Beating Indigenous heart disease Aboriginal Healthy Hearts Research Workshop brings together the community On 30 March 2017 the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s (ISLHD) Research Central and IHMRI facilitated the Aboriginal Healthy Hearts Research Workshop—the first of its kind for the region—to shine a light on coronary heart disease (CHD) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is a pressing national health issue. Overall, the death rate from coronary heart disease

(CHD) is twice as high in Indigenous people as in non-indigenous people. Indigenous people are also more likely to suffer CHD at an earlier age.

The workshop gathered a diverse group of people, including national health experts, doctors, public servants and representatives from local Indigenous communities.

“The workshop is the first step in this collaborative initiative. We want to understand the scope of the problem in our area, discuss examples of successful intervention strategies, and define what further research is needed,” said Professor Leonard Arnolda, Clinical Director of IHMRI.

What’s on the menu?

National Meal Guidelines support older Australians to live at home longer Fifty thousand Australians benefit from the subsidised meals delivered

by Meals on Wheels. With the responsibility of producing 10 million meals a year, the Australian Meals on Wheels Association (AMOWA) wanted to ensure nutritious and healthy dishes. For expert advice, AMOWA turned to a team of IHMRI researchers at UOW’s Smart Foods Centre.

Led by Associate Professor Karen Walton, the team (Dr Anne McMahon, Associate Professor Karen Charlton, Senior Professor Linda Tapsell AM and Professor Peter Williams) developed the National Meal Guidelines for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).

“Older adults may become malnourished for a number of reasons, including ill health, reduced appetite, bereavement, dentition issues, social isolation, reduced mobility and economic constraints,” said Associate Professor Karen Walton. “Providing nutritious meals is extremely important, and these Guidelines are under-pinned by the latest dietary research.”

The Guidelines were funded through a contract from the AMOWA, with funding from the Australian Government Department of Social Services (now the Department of Health).

One of the difficulties with current treatment techniques, which map out the cancer ahead of the radiotherapy is that tumours move during treatment, for example when the patient breathes.

Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI)-guided radiotherapy now allows the cancer and surrounding organs to be viewed in real time as it is being treated, but at present it is impossible to check the radiation dose in real time.

A team of IHMRI researchers within the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) and Wollongong Hospital aims to solve this problem by perfecting a novel radiation dosimetry (radiation dosage measurement) system that operates with 1 4

MRI-linear accelerators.

To support this vital work, Cancer Council NSW awarded IHMRI researcher Professor Peter Metcalfe from CMRP a project grant to develop a world-first system to ensure the safe delivery of radiation doses to cancer patients.

Other IHMRI investigators on the project are Distinguished Professor Anatoly Rozenfeld, Dr Marco Petasecca, and Dr Brad Oborn from the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre.

They are collaborating with Associate Professor Gary Liney from the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, Associate Professor Lois Holloway from Liverpool Hospital and Professor David Thwaites from University of Sydney The end benefits of the three-year study will enable technology such as the MRI-linear accelerator to be used to their full potential, resulting in safer, more accurate and more effective treatment for patients.

“It’s mainly for the cancers that are difficult to visualise and treat—lung, breast, oesophagus, pancreas, kidney, rectal tissue, liver, cervix, prostate and lymph nodes—all the tricky ones,” Professor Metcalfe stated.

“These cancers are difficult to target using current technology because they are near healthy organs that need to be avoided.

If you can reduce the size of the radiation field and hit the target more exactly you can spare the healthy organs.”

Professor Metcalfe said that working with Cancer Council NSW really brought home the importance of the project.

“You feel a real responsibility when you’ve got a grant from Cancer Council NSW because you’ve seen the women and men doing Daffodil Day and Relay for Life.

They’ve really worked their butts off to raise this money, so you’d better do some good work.”

Medically smart textiles IHMRI researchers develop new 3D smart textile Since 2013 IHMRI researcher Dr Javad Foroughi has been developing a new class of smart textile—one that not only senses movement from a muscle or joint, but can move in response. This exciting development has been a long sought-after goal in the field of materials science and has the potential for use in a wide range of health and medical applications.

The breakthrough came three years into Dr Foroughi’s Discovery Early Career Research

Award Fellowship from the Australian Research Council. His findings have been published in the high-ranking international journal, ACS Nano.

A Senior Research Fellow and Associate Investigator from UOW’s ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES), Dr Foroughi worked with an international team of experts to develop the smart textile, including UOW colleagues Distinguished Professor Gordon Wallace AO and Professor Geoff Spinks, plus Professor Ray Baughman from the University of Texas.

“Our recent work allowed us to develop smart clothing that simultaneously monitors the wearer’s movements, senses strain, and adjusts the garment to support or correct the movement,” stated Dr Foroughi.

The first generation 3D smart textile is made from multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and spandex fibres. The textile created from the yarn is very stretchy and capable of conducting electricity. It generates a mechanical work capacity of up to 0.64 kJ/ kg and a maximum specific power output of 1.28 kW/kg, which is much higher than that produced by skeletal muscles.

Dr Foroughi and the team have integrated the knitted textile into a rehabilitative knee sleeve, which is currently being tested by researchers at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne.

The team is now working on using the CNT knitted textile as a wearable antenna, as well as in biomedical applications, like lymph sleeves.

“The lymph sleeve will be developed using lightweight actuating fabric that will detect swelling and then respond by ‘squeezing’ the arm to enhance lymph flow,” explained Dr Foroughi.

Dr Foroughi is also working with researchers at Wollongong Hospital to establish a new class of smart textiles for drug-delivery systems.

Collaboration for a cause Event showcases cancer research in the Illawarra The inaugural Clinical and Translational Research Interest Workshop was held at City Beach Function Centre Wollongong in September 2016.

The event brought together some of the greatest minds in cancer research and care from the Illawarra, Sydney and the ACT, including clinicians, research academics, allied health professionals and community members.

Members of the organising committee, Professor Marie Ranson and Associate Professor Morteza Aghmesheh, opened the event, which was sponsored by the Centre for Oncology Education and Research Translation (CONCERT), in collaboration with IHMRI and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

by Associate Professor Catriona McNeil from Chris O’Brien Lifehouse; a question and answer session hosted by Dr Bruce Ashford, Surgeon and PhD candidate; and closing remarks by Dr Daniel Brungs, medical oncologist and PhD candidate from the Illawarra Cancer Care Centre.

Lunch with Dame Bridget Ogilvie IHMRI tackles the science of gender equality On 6 March 2017, IHMRI held the inaugural Lunch with Dame Bridget Ogilvie to recognise, support and celebrate female researchers in the Illawarra.

Held at The Grange to coincide with International Women’s Day, the lunch brought together a very diverse group of women working in health and medical research, including senior academics and clinician researchers, as well as PhD candidates.

The event was not only a wonderful networking opportunity, but also a platform to raise issues that hamper the progression of female researchers, particularly those living in regional areas.

New Clinical Research and Trials Unit Hospital patients to benefit from cutting-edge research During 2016-2017, IHMRI worked together with founding partner the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD), on the development of the new Clinical Research and Trials Unit (CRTU) at Wollongong Hospital.

IHMRI completely refurbished space in Lawson House to provide a reception area and three consulting rooms, where researchers can meet trial participants for clinical examinations, tests and interviews. The CRTU also contains a fully equipped laboratory to prepare specimens (i.e. blood samples), and will be serviced by registered nurses and clinical trial coordinators for high-level research support.

The goal of the new CRTU is to attract commercial clinical trials by pharmaceutical companies and investigator-initiated trials by researchers. The new CRTU will also help clinicians get involved in research and encourage collaboration between academics and clinician researchers. The new CRTU will supplement the existing facilities at IHMRI’s headquarters at UOW. “We are bringing world-class health and medical research into the hospital system and directly to patients who can most benefit from it,” stated IHMRI’s CEO and Executive Director, Professor David Adams.

A number of new trials are already in the pipeline at the CRTU, including one on Chrohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and another on endometriosis pain.

Scientific Advisory Committee IHMRI Directors appointed a new Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) for 2017-2019.

The SAC provides advice on IHMRI’s research priorities and research strengths, as well as guidance on funding opportunities. The SAC also participates in reviews of research initiatives and provides a broad perspective of national and international trends in health and medical research.

The SAC consists of up to eight members, including IHMRI’s Executive Director and Clinical Director, and external members who serve for an initial term of three years. Drawn from a range of external Australasian institutions and universities, the external committee members are highly successful and experienced international researchers.
