Message from the IHMRI Chair Collaboration is a major goal for many organisations around the world. And with good reason. Working with people from different backgrounds or areas of expertise can result in better ideas and outcomes.

The Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) provides the right environment for collaboration to flourish. As a not-for-profit charity, we bring together a diverse range of academics, clinicians and health professionals to work on solutions to diseases such as cancer, dementia, diabetes and mental illness. Our vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in the IllawarraShoalhaven through research excellence and innovation.

This financial year was a remarkable time for increased recognition on the international stage. In November 2018, IHMRI secured widespread attention with the opening of its new Electrophysiology Facility for Cell Phenotyping and Drug Discovery, which was attended

by Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel AC. I am very excited by the breakthroughs in drug discovery that this facility will uncover.

Relationships are the foundation of IHMRI’s continuing success.

Throughout the year, we worked closely with state government entities, such as the Office of Health and Medical Research, to report on our results and provide feedback on policy proposals.

IHMRI also plays an influential role in key partnerships with other universities and medical research institutes.

This year I was proud to see IHMRI CEO and Executive Director, Distinguished Professor David J. Adams, appointed to the Advisory Committee of the NSW Government’s Cardiovascular Disease Research Capacity Development Program. I look forward to assisting in efforts to secure more cardiovascular researchers to this region to take advantage of this significant stream of funding.

As a dynamic and agile organisation, IHMRI is ready to respond to Australia’s challenging and competitive environment for health and medical research funding.

The Australian Research Council's 2018 Excellence in Research Australia report also revealed how IHMRI researchers are making a significant contribution to UOW’s global reputation for research, with five health and medical disciplines ranking 'well above world standard'.

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Professor Judy Raper and Emeritus Professor John Rostas who both retired from the IHMRI Board of Directors after many years of service. I would also like to thank IHMRI’s Executive Management Team and operations staff for their swift and energetic implementation of IHMRI’s Strategic Plan 2017 – 2021.

Now that we are on the cusp of a new decade, I am excited to see how IHMRI can shape an expanded partnership with our founding partners so that our shared research can continue to create lasting impact in our region and beyond.

Message from the IHMRI Directors The passionate and unwavering pursuit of discovery. This is the spirit of the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI). Our affiliated researchers are a diverse group of academics, clinicians and health professionals. They work together to uncover new insights into the human body, find better ways to treat disease and illness, and improve clinical practice.

Our efforts are paying dividends. In 2018, 20 new clinicians joined IHMRI as affiliated researchers. IHMRI is actively working with clinicians in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) to support research project development and source funding opportunities, with almost $200,000 provided to clinicians in IHMRI internal grants.

Over the past 12 months we continued to implement initiatives set out in our Strategic Plan 2017-2021. To develop a collaborative internal culture focused on excellence, we promoted research integrity, and supported equity, diversity and inclusion. We also sought a deeper understanding of the diverse needs of our researchers.

This year we implemented a new Community Engagement Strategy and assigned extra resources to develop new outreach and engagement activities. We are very grateful to our community supporters, including The Great Illawarra Walk, the Saving Chloe Saxby Foundation, the Illawarra Cancer Carers, the Oak Flats Lioness Club, UniActive and Mr Richard Miller.

By improving research performance, we have increased funding for infrastructure from the Medical Research Support Program of the NSW Office of Health and Medical Research, with $1,177,848 received in 2018-2019.

We acknowledge Professor Brett Garner for his contribution to IHMRI as interim Executive Director in 2014. An outstanding researcher in neurodegenerative diseases, Professor Garner retired from his academic position at the University of Wollongong (UOW) this year.

We wish him all the best in his new endeavours.

To further increase the chances of funding success, IHMRI’s new Research Development Office (RDO) implemented a proactive and strategic approach to grant applications and quickly identified, promoted and advised on new funding opportunities such as the inaugural Dementia Australia Research Foundation, and new funding streams of the National Health and Medical Research Council.

We would like to thank IHMRI’s Board of Directors for their continued commitment to IHMRI’s growing independence and our partners — UOW and ISLHD — for their ongoing support. Finally, we thank our dedicated operations team who help make IHMRI a dynamic, focused and outcome-driven research institute.

This year we have also been fortunate to secure commercial funding sources for key projects in IHMRI’s new Electrophysiology Facility for Cell Phenotyping and Drug Discovery.

The rollout of the Research and Innovation Strategy 20172020 continued, with new programs to assist the professional development of our researchers, to grow expertise in health analytics, and to encourage collaboration between academics and clinicians.

Mental health and the ageing brain

Our multidisciplinary researchers work within and across three broad research themes.

Diagnostics and therapeutics Researchers in this theme explore the fundamental mechanisms of disease.

They use this knowledge to design, test and evaluate new drugs as well as medical devices. They work together to increase treatment options and quality of life for patients with complex medical conditions.

Researchers in this theme examine the mechanisms, causes, prevention and treatment of a wide range of chronic and complex psychiatric illnesses, neurodegenerative diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders. Together they seek to address the burden of mental illness and neurodegenerative diseases in the region.

Chronic conditions and lifestyle Researchers in this theme study the links between disease and lifestyle risk factors, such as excess weight, poor diet, high blood pressure, drug addictions and physical inactivity. They work together to find better treatments and prevention strategies to extend healthy ageing.

USA Department of Defense funds search for new treatments When motor neurone disease (MND) strikes, the results are devastating, not only for the people afflicted but their families, carers and communities.

Around 2,000 Australians are living with the disease, gradually losing the use of their arms and legs, as well as their ability to speak, swallow and breathe. There is no effective treatment or cure, and most people die within three to five years of diagnosis With in-depth knowledge of proteostasis and cellular stress responses, Senior Professor Mark Wilson and Professor Heath Ecroyd are part of the global fight against MND. Based within the University of Wollongong’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, the duo are gaining an international reputation for their expertise, with the USA Department of Defense (USA DoD) supporting their development of a drug testing trial for MND, which is also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The USA DoD is a major source of funding for MND research. War veterans in the USA, who currently number more than 21 million, have a higher incidence of MND than the general population.

In 2019, the researchers received a Therapeutic Idea Award from the USA DoD’s Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program (ALSRP).

Over the next two years the researchers, with collaborators at Macquarie University and the Queensland Brain Institute, will use the funding to perform a rapid flow cytometry screen for identifying novel drug leads for MND. “We invested several years of work to develop a new cell-based assay that provides a unique way to rapidly and quantitatively examine the effects of large numbers of small drug molecules on a process that is strongly implicated in disease causation,” explains Senior Professor Mark Wilson.

Once armed with their state-of-the-art rapid flow cytometry screen, the researchers will be able to discover potential new treatments for further analysis and clinical trials — knowledge which one day may help alleviate the plight of sufferers and their families worldwide.

Clearing the air on medicinal cannabis

IHMRI researchers play key role in NHMRC Centre of Excellence Although policy makers in Australia are in the process of decriminalising cannabis for medicinal purposes, scientists are still debating the therapeutic properties and long-term safety of the drug.

Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Centre for Cannabinoid Clinical and Research Excellence (ACRE) wants to ensure Australians have access to products that are safe and effective for certain conditions.

Co-led by Professor Jenny Martin from the University of Newcastle and Professor Nadia Solowij from the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Psychology, ACRE aims to build capacity in medicinal cannabis research and provide a national response to current challenges.

Distinguished Professor Xu-Feng Huang and Dr Katrina Green from UOW’s School of Medicine are also part of ACRE, which comprises over 20 Chief and Associate Investigators from multi-disciplinary fields from over 10 Australian universities and other research institutions.

Helping people with blood cancer Cancer Council NSW supports research into graft-versus-host disease What happens when a life-saving treatment causes a life-threatening side effect?

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a debilitating and painful illness that occurs in around half of patients who receive a donor stem cell transplant to treat blood cancer. The disease attacks the organs, including the liver, skin and gut. It can cause organ damage and failure, and in some cases, death.

In 2019, over 6,400 Australians will be diagnosed with lymphoma, and 4,200 will be diagnosed with leukaemia. More research is urgently required to ensure these people can receive essential transplants without developing GVHD.

Dr Debbie Watson In recognition of this growing health challenge, the Cancer Council NSW awarded Dr Debbie Watson from UOW’s School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience a three-year project grant to investigate measures to prevent graft-versushost disease (GVHD).

Improving the detection and treatment of delirium Training nurses through role-play Delirium is an acute, reversible, short-term confusion that presents as agitation and reduced alertness. Untreated and undetected delirium leads to falls, longer stays in hospital and sometimes death. Older people undergoing surgery are at a higher risk of experiencing delirium.

A group of IHMRI researchers from the Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Computing and Information Technology at the University of Wollongong (UOW) are striving to improve the care of hospital patients experiencing post-operative delirium.

In 2018, Professor Victoria Traynor and Professor Hui Chen Chang from UOW’s Aged Dementia Health Education & Research received a grant from the Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation to implement a delirium education program.

In 2019, they were part of a larger team that received a Translational Research 1 2

The research team, which also includes Associate Professor Ping Yu, Dr Jessica Nealon, Jessica Bresolin and Nicole Britten, will work with clinical staff in recovery units at Wollongong, St. George and Bega hospitals to improve delirium care.

IHMRI has played a supportive role in the

success of this research, helping with grant applications and providing financial support for supplementary research. In 2018, Professor Victoria Traynor and Dr Jessica Nealon received an IHMRI Collaborative Research Grant for their project, Postoperative delirium in post-anaesthetic care units: Translating knowledge into practice, which helped them implement a survey to understand international perspectives about delirium care after operations.

Under the skin Seeking answers for traumatised people Neuroscientist Dr Natalie Matosin, from the University of Wollongong's (UOW) School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, is an early-career researcher who is quickly developing a reputation for excellence in neurobiology and the genetics of mental illnesses including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

After completing her PhD at IHMRI in 2015, Dr Matosin was awarded a prestigious CJ Martin Fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council. The Fellowship enabled her to undertake a two-year post-doctoral position at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Germany. During her time overseas she refined her knowledge of the genetic and molecular basis of severe psychiatric

conditions. Now back at IHMRI, she aims to develop a framework to identify the people who would benefit from early intervention and treatment.

IHMRI has supported her career trajectory by providing support at key stages. In 2019, she received a Dame Bridget Ogilvie Scholarship to assist with an opportunity to enhance her career profile. She also won an IHMRI Young Investigator Award (YIA) for her project, TRIP: The Trauma and Refugee Intervention Project.

A new treatment for pancreatic cancer Researchers collaborate on implantable drug delivery systems Despite advances in cancer screening, diagnosis and therapy, pancreatic cancer remains one of the most deadly forms of cancer in Australia. It is a highly malignant disease with poor prognosis. The most common treatment remains surgery but for more than 80 per cent of patients this surgery is not an option.

A multidisciplinary team of academics and clinicians are studying a new drug delivery system to reduce cancer cells and

improve the chances of life-saving surgery for patients, combining their considerable expertise in drug development, oncology and smart materials.

Research Fellow and project lead, Dr Kara Vine-Perrow, from UOW's School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience, is collaborating with oncologist Clinical Professor Morteza Aghmesheh from Wollongong Hospital, Dr Javad Foroughi from the ARC Centre of Excellence for

Electromaterials Science (ACES), and supervising PhD candidates Samantha Wade and Sepehr Talebian on the project.

A Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme grant from Cancer Australia/Pancare Foundation supports the project.

The partnership between IHMRI and ACES helps bring together researchers from diverse disciplines through regular seminars and joint PhD scholarships.

STRATEGIC PRIORITY 3: STRONGER COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS

The beauty of science Science art exhibition raises over $10,000 for MND research Magnified, a science art exhibition held at the University of Wollongong (UOW) in July 2018, raised over $10,000 for emerging researchers studying motor neurone disease (MND).

The exhibition featured a stunning display of 55 original images of science, kindly donated by researchers at IHMRI, the University of Wollongong (UOW) and BlueScope Steel.

Organised by former IHMRI Research Assistant, Clare Watson, and PhD candidate, Rachelle Balez, Magnified also helped educate over 300 people who visited the exhibition about the fascinating research conducted in the Illawarra. The pair organised Magnified in honour of Professor Justin Yerbury, a renowned and inspirational MND researcher who also lives with the disease himself.

Funds were raised via the sale of the framed images, as well as reprints. Almost all of the artworks were sold, with 35 quickly purchased at the Opening Night Function,

held at the TAEM Gallery in UOW’s School of the Arts, English and Media The Opening Night Function was attended by a number of VIPs, including the major event sponsor Jason Ballerini from Just Better Care, local community sponsors Sharon Bird MP, Paul Scully MP, Ryan Park MP and Stephen Jones MP, as well as

Thanks to these scholarships, three emerging and talented researchers were able to expand their knowledge and networks at the International Symposium on Motor Neurone Disease in Glasgow in 2018.

For President of the ICC, Sue Maidman, the donations to IHMRI are a longterm commitment to the health of future generations.

Caring for the community Fundraisers support search for new cancer treatments

Over the past 10 years, the Illawarra Cancer Carers (ICC) have donated more than $1 million for cancer research at IHMRI from funds raised through stalls, raffles and events, including an annual banquet.

A unique feature of the relationship between ICC and IHMRI researchers is the

volunteers have direct access to the cancer researchers. This allows the researchers to nominate a pressing project and ICC to fundraise for that specific project, allowing the donors to know where the donations are being spent and the researchers to receive support for vital projects.

Such local support is invaluable as competitive government funding does not always cover the high costs of cancer research. The ICC’s most recent donation supported a project led by Professor Marie Ranson and Associate Professor Michael Kelso from UOW's School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience to develop a novel drug for pancreatic and breast cancer.

This research examined the cancer-fighting characteristics of compounds derived from amiloride, a diuretic drug used for over five decades to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, or extra fluid in the body.

Marathon walkers step out for research Community support enables research into rare disease Chris and Ruth Lovatt love supporting charities and they love to walk! Since 2008, the couple have organised the annual fundraising hike, The Great Illawarra Walk. For the past two years they have donated the proceeds to IHMRI research into Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWMD) for the Saving Chloe Saxby campaign.

VWMD is a rare neurodegenerative condition that affects the nervous system,

causing problems with movement and mental functioning. There is currently no cure for VWMD and current treatments only alleviate the symptoms. Two girls in the region, Chloe Saxby and Holly Burns, suffer from this debilitating and painful disease.

treatments for VWMD. Her team uses cuttingedge stem cell and drug testing technology to undertake this meticulous work.

In 2018, The Great Illawarra Walk raised $100,000 for this research, and in 2019 they raised a further $150,000, with over 800 people taking part in the event.

Research into rare diseases like VWMD is not usually funded by government schemes, so this community support is vital to the continuation of the project.

Chief Scientist launches new electrophysiology facility The drug testing SynchroPatch 384PE robot Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO, visited the Illawarra in November 2018 to open IHMRI’s Electrophysiology Facility for Cell Phenotyping and Drug Discovery (E-Phys core).

Electrophysiology is the branch of neuroscience that explores the electrical activity of living neurons and investigates the molecular and cellular processes that govern their signalling.

The E-Phys core houses the state-of-the-art

Nanion SynchroPatch 384PE robot. This high-throughput (HT) automated patch clamp system allows researchers to measure electrical activity in up to 384 single living cells at a time, and their responses to different drugs. This speeds up the process of cell analysis and significantly reduces laboratory times for researchers.

The E-Phys core, which is available for hire, will also help bring together biophysicists, cell biologists, chemists, pharmacologists

The project, funded by the Dementia Australia Research Foundation, also features researchers from the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the University of California, San Diego, USA.

Do you comfort eat when you are blue?

The Mood, Food and Biomarkers Study IHMRI’s well equipped Clinical Research and Trials Unit (CRTU) offers facilities and services for a range of clinical research studies and commercial clinical trials.

Our region’s demographic and economic diversity, and incidence of chronic disease, also makes it an ideal place for population health studies and clinical trials.

A research team from the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) School of Medicine recently used IHMRI’s CRTU for a study examining the relationship between comfort eating and depression.

The team, Dr Theresa Larkin, Professor Chao Deng, Dr Susan Thomas, and PhD candidate Jessica Mills, measured appetite hormones including grehlin and leptin in the trial participants. Early findings from this trial suggest a link between excessive eating and an insensitivity to hormonal signals.

The researchers plan to conduct a larger study in the Illawarra, which will follow participants over a period of 12 months. The aim of this trial is to determine which comes first – do hormones cause the comfort eating, or does comfort eating affect the hormones?

Understanding this relationship is important for preventing chronic disease, as gaining weight puts people at risk of other health problems later in life, including heart disease and metabolic syndrome.

Scientific Advisory Committee IHMRI Directors appointed a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) for 2017-2019.

The SAC provides advice on IHMRI’s research priorities and research strengths, as well as guidance on funding opportunities. The SAC also participates in reviews of research initiatives and provides a broad perspective of national and international trends in health and medical research.

The SAC consists of eight members, including IHMRI’s Executive Director and Clinical Director, and external members who serve for an initial term of three years. Drawn from a range of external Australasian institutions and universities, the external committee members are highly successful and experienced international researchers.
