ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

FUTURE-FOCUSED STUDY ABROAD The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) delivers flexible programs that optimize the long-term benefits of study abroad participation. Since 1988, IFSA-Butler has grown to support students from hundreds of U.S. and Canadian institutions each year. The IFSA-Butler student experience is personally tailored for individualized impact. More than just an exciting study abroad opportunity, IFSA-Butler programs integrate the acquisition of critical lifelong skills—the essence of Future-Focused Study Abroad.

INTENTIONAL PROGRAMMING IFSA-Butler offers more than 100 dynamic study abroad programs in 18 countries. Comprehensive academic, personal and logistical support allows our students to focus on making the most of the study abroad experience. Through our local staff experts, our students develop insider knowledge of the local academic environment. Internships, directed research options, volunteer opportunities, community-based learning, and our signature Exploring Community & Culture model all facilitate critical skill development. Many of our programs are based at pre-eminent institutions abroad offering direct access to academic departments distinguished as leaders in their respective disciplines, while other programs offer IFSA-Butler courses taught by local experts. All programs are structured to engage students and promote intellectual growth.

BEYOND STUDY ABROAD Our philosophy is guided by key principles of appreciative advising, a positive, goals-oriented strategy that builds on the strengths of the individual and encourages the exploration of new perspectives, allowing students to challenge themselves and maximize their learning in unexpected ways. Because constructive learning is the most meaningful, IFSA-Butler students take part in a pre-arrival process that prepares them to succeed; on-site experiences that push them to create knowledge through their interactions with peers, instructors and community members; and post-program reflection that clarifies transferrable skills acquired. The personal agency that emerges is one of the greatest benefits students can achieve through studying abroad, and it is at the core of the Future-Focused Study Abroad approach that distinguishes IFSA-Butler.

QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT STUDY ABROAD

ARE YOUR EXCURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM FEE?

DO YOU HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS? IFSA-Butler and the Alliance place a high priority on making study abroad accessible to all students. For more information on our scholarships and other funding opportunities, see page 3.

DO YOU ORGANIZE CULTURAL EXCURSIONS AND ACTIVITIES? Some study abroad programs advertise host university activities and events as their own. Alliance and IFSA-Butler staff abroad organize special cultural events and excursions just for our students. Of course, host university activities are also available to our students and are a bonus to the IFSA-Butler and Alliance cultural experience.

IFSA-Butler and Alliance program fees include all of our excursions and activities, which often include “off the beaten path” attractions that most students wouldn’t be able to do on their own. These co-curricular opportunities complement your academic learning for a well-rounded cultural and academic experience.

64%

of employers consider study abroad an

important quality in potential candidates (Erasmus Student Network)

DOES IFSA-BUTLER HAVE HEALTH AND SAFETY PLANS IN PLACE? The Alliance and IFSA-Butler have nearly 30 years of experience in emergency and crisis response. We maintain emergency phone numbers where both resident and U.S. staff can be reached after hours for any urgent situation, and our Crisis Management Team headquartered in the U.S. coordinates with resident staff in the event of a crisis that may affect the safety or well-being of our students. Our crisis response plans are detailed and specifically tailored for each program location.

QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT STUDY ABROAD

DO I HAVE TO ARRANGE MY OWN HOUSING? Can you imagine having to arrange your own housing abroad? Neither can we. The Alliance and IFSA-Butler program fees always include housing that’s pre-arranged before you arrive abroad.

DO YOU HAVE FULL-TIME STAFF IN EACH HOST COUNTRY? Some study abroad programs just give busy professors extra money to provide an occasional event or to organize a brief orientation. We have offices and full-time staff in every country where we have programs. Our staff provide everything from thorough orientations to academic guidance to emergency assistance.

ARE ALL YOUR FEES LISTED UP FRONT? We don’t have any hidden charges. All of our fees, plus deposits and potential supplemental fees such as meal plan charges, are clearly outlined in our program fee pages on our website. OUR FEES INCLUDE: • Tuition • Guaranteed prearranged housing • Meals for some programs • U.S.-based program, academic and finance staff available on a daily basis • Assistance finding the perfect program for you • Personalized advising and assistance from your IFSA-Butler program advisor • Predeparture support for students and parents • Assistance with financial aid transfers • Travel and student visa assistance • Optional group flight arrangements for most programs • Butler University transcript for easy credit transfer • Grade and credit appeal assistance • Permanent academic record maintenance

QUESTIONS TO ASK ABOUT STUDY ABROAD

HOW WILL MY GRADES AND CREDITS TRANSFER? Every IFSA-Butler and Alliance student receives a Butler University transcript with official grade and credit translations at no extra cost. Having a U.S. university transcript will make your academic career smoother, because most U.S. universities treat the Butler University transcript as transfer credit.

DO YOUR PROGRAMS INCLUDE MEDICAL INSURANCE? All Alliance and IFSA-Butler programs include comprehensive accident and illness insurance at no additional cost.

Australia, New Zealand,

Great Britain, Ireland and Israel are ranked

AMONG THE

TOP 20

Development Index

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE AN EMERGENCY ABROAD?

WILL I HAVE AN ON-SITE ORIENTATION? IFSA-Butler and the Alliance won’t leave you out in the cold. Each program begins with an orientation upon arrival abroad. Our resident staff abroad organize and conduct the orientations themselves.

We operate on-site offices in every country where we have programs. These offices and our staff are dedicated to the assistance of our students and maintain 24/7 emergency systems to provide help and support to students with any kind of medical or personal emergency.

EXPLORING COMMUNITY & CULTURE MODEL (C&C)

In today’s global world, it is no longer enough to travel and study in another country. Employers and graduate schools want to see more. They want you to demonstrate that you have successfully navigated another culture, that you have the skills to work in a multicultural environment and that you have gone beyond just academic tourism.

TAKE OUR COURSE Our C&C course is an online, 3-credit option that fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of global society. Some programs offer an on-site class, while students in most locations take the course online.

DR. DEIDRE MENDEZ

As the instructor for IFSA-Butler’s online C&C course, Dr. Mendez will guide and mentor IFSA-Butler’s global cohorts as they reflect on their experiences abroad and use this dynamic learning opportunity to gain critical cross-cultural skills. Dr. Mendez is Associate Director for Cultural Programs at the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at the University of Texas at Austin.

Set yourself apart Set yourself apart from other students studying abroad with IFSA-Butler’s Exploring Community & Culture (C&C) model. C&C is exclusive to IFSA-Butler and is a key component of every program.

DO THINGS! PARTICIPATE IN CULTURAL EXCURSIONS

Take advantage of this opportunity to go beyond the surface through C&C!

8

Learn More: www.ifsa-butler.org | 800-858-0229 | https://www.facebook.com/IFSAButler

Each of our programs offers different co-curricular activities for students, and our on-site staff arrange these unique activities so that you don’t have to. You’ll have access to places and events you wouldn’t even know were available! Best of all, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on these excursions in your C&C course and discuss how they fit into the greater context of your study abroad experience. See our website for more details.

GO LOCAL! JOIN A COMMUNITY Wondering how you might make local friends and actually feel more like a local? With C&C, you’ll engage in a community of your choosing in your host city. This could include joining a university club or sports team, a local NGO, a faith-based organization or doing volunteer work.

“C&C is a project-based, crash course of the dynamic and lively facets of the Irish culture as well as the reflection of one’s own. It is two hours a week spent delving into topics most certainly forgotten by a typical study abroad student, and there would have been a void in my experience without it.” –Megan Madonna Vanderbilt University

WHAT C&C OFFERS YOU: C&C offers you the exciting chance to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. It is designed to take study abroad to another level. While abroad, do you want to do what locals do? Go where they go? See your new culture and environment through their eyes?

GET MORE OUT OF STUDY ABROAD WITH C&C: Using your host city as your laboratory, C&C will help make an unfamiliar place more familiar. Get a behindthe-scenes look at your city that you could never learn in a classroom or see on a tour bus. You’ll experience and enjoy some of the cultural quirks that make your new home unique, and maybe you’ll recognize some quirks of your own.

Stipends are $250 to $1,000 for completed projects. Positions are typically available in a wide range of areas related to study abroad and IFSA-Butler and Alliance programs.

College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid. 10

ABOUT IFSA-BUTLER AND THE ALLIANCE FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION

ABOUT BUTLER UNIVERSITY

The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988. Our primary goal is to provide quality study abroad opportunities, plus academic and personal support services, for qualified undergraduates seeking to earn academic credit through study abroad. While the Institute for Study Abroad has an affiliation with Butler University for transcripts and other purposes, it is a separate organization. The Alliance for Global Education was formed with the vision of opening study abroad destinations to an ever-growing and more diverse U.S. undergraduate population. Our core mission is to develop and promote innovative programs in vibrant, dynamic countries that are of ever-increasing scholarly, political and economic interest. The Alliance is a division of IFSA-Butler. IFSA-Butler and the Alliance currently operate programs in Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Scotland, Spain, Turkey and Wales.

Butler University is a nationally recognized comprehensive university encompassing six colleges: Arts, Business, Communication, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Together, these colleges offer over 60 undergraduate majors, eight pre-professional majors and 18 master’s degrees. Around 4,700 students are enrolled at Butler, representing 45 states and 52 countries. Approximately 77 percent of Butler students will have participated in some form of internship, student teaching, clinical rotation, research or service learning by the time they graduate. In addition to this professional experience, Butler students develop lifelong skills in critical thinking, effective communication, cooperative teamwork and ethical decision making. Butler endeavors to prepare students not simply to make a living, but to live lives of purpose in which personal flourishing is intertwined with the welfare of others.

Country Life Weekend was hands down the best weekend I had in Australia. I hadn’t realized how much I had gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of the city, but a weekend away taught me that I needed to find ways to relax. All in all, Country Life had the perfect timing in the semester. – Michael Brown Wake Forest University
