ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

FUTURE-FOCUSED STUDY ABROAD The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) delivers flexible programs that optimize the long-term benefits of study abroad participation. Since 1988, IFSA-Butler has grown to support students from hundreds of U.S. and Canadian institutions each year. The IFSA-Butler student experience is personally tailored for individualized impact. More than just an exciting study abroad opportunity, IFSA-Butler programs integrate the acquisition of critical lifelong skills—the essence of Future-Focused Study Abroad.

INTENTIONAL PROGRAMMING IFSA-Butler offers more than 100 dynamic study abroad programs in 18 countries. Comprehensive academic, personal and logistical support allows our students to focus on making the most of the study abroad experience. Through our local staff experts, our students develop insider knowledge of the local academic environment. Internships, directed research options, volunteer opportunities, community-based learning and our signature Exploring Community & Culture model all facilitate critical skill development. Many of our programs are based at pre-eminent institutions abroad offering direct access to academic departments distinguished as leaders in their respective disciplines, while other programs offer IFSA-Butler courses taught by local experts. All programs are structured to engage students and promote intellectual growth.

BEYOND STUDY ABROAD Our philosophy is guided by the key principles of appreciative advising, a positive, goals-oriented strategy that builds on the strengths of the individual and encourages the exploration of new perspectives, allowing students to challenge themselves and maximize their learning in unexpected ways. Because constructive learning is the most meaningful, IFSA-Butler students take part in a pre-arrival process that prepares them to succeed; on-site experiences that push them to create knowledge through their interactions with peers, instructors and community members; and post-program reflection that clarifies transferrable skills acquired. The personal agency that emerges is one of the greatest benefits students can achieve through studying abroad, and it is at the core of the Future-Focused Study Abroad approach that distinguishes IFSA-Butler.

EXPLORING COMMUNITY & CULTURE MODEL (C&C)

In today’s global world, it is no longer enough to travel and study in another country. Employers and graduate schools want to see more. They want you to demonstrate that you have successfully navigated another culture, that you have the skills to work in a multicultural environment and that you have gone beyond just academic tourism. Set yourself apart Set yourself apart from other students studying abroad with IFSA-Butler’s Exploring Community & Culture (C&C) model. C&C is exclusive to IFSA-Butler and is a distinguishing feature of every program. Our C&C course and community engagement philosophy will help deepen your understanding of your host community and our greater global society.

4

TAKE OUR COURSE Our C&C course is a 3-credit option that fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of local society. Some programs offer an on-site class, while students in other locations take the course online as a global cohort with other IFSA-Butler students worldwide.

DO THINGS! PARTICIPATE IN CULTURAL EXCURSIONS

Take advantage of this opportunity to go beyond the surface through C&C!

Learn More: www.ifsa-butler.org | 800-858-0229 | https://www.facebook.com/IFSAButler

Each of our countries offers different co-curricular excursions for students, and our local staff arrange these unique activities so that you don’t have to. You’ll have access to experiences you wouldn’t even know were available! These co-curricular activities are fun, informative and help students delve even deeper into the cultural complexities of local society.

HOST FAMILIES

CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT

IFSA-Butler places students with carefully selected host families in Latin America. In most locations we house only one student per family for maximum language and cultural integration.

IFSA-Butler’s university-based programs allow students access to campus sports, organizations, clubs and social events. C&C students are able to truly engage with host university students and to have an authentic university experience in their newly adopted community.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES C&C helps students give back to their host community by arranging meaningful volunteer opportunities. Activities are available for a wide variety of interests and at all types of organizations in our Latin America programs and in many of our English-speaking locations.

WHAT C&C OFFERS YOU C&C offers you the exciting chance to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. It is designed to take study abroad to another level. While abroad, do you want to do what locals do? Go where they go? See your new culture and environment through their eyes?

GET MORE OUT OF STUDY ABROAD WITH C&C Using your host city as your laboratory, C&C will help make an unfamiliar place more familiar. Get a behindthe-scenes look at your city that you could never learn in a classroom or see on a tour bus. You’ll experience and enjoy some of the cultural quirks that make your new home unique, and maybe you’ll recognize some quirks of your own.

WORK-TO-STUDY GRANTS Build your resume and help pay for study abroad at the same time! Work-to-Study grants allow students to work on special projects before or during their study abroad experience. IFSA-Butler pays $250 to $1,000 for completed projects. Positions are typically available in a wide range of areas related to study abroad and IFSA-Butler and Alliance programs.

USE YOUR FINANCIAL AID TO STUDY ABROAD! Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about its policies for transferring these types of aid. 6

The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 at Butler University. Our primary goal is to provide quality study abroad opportunities, plus academic and personal support services, for qualified North American undergraduates seeking to earn academic credit through study abroad. While the Institute for Study Abroad has an affiliation with Butler University for transcripts and other purposes, it is a separate organization. The Alliance for Global Education was formed with the vision of opening study abroad destinations to an ever-growing and more diverse U.S. undergraduate population. Our core mission is to develop and promote innovative programs in vibrant, dynamic countries that are of ever-increasing scholarly, political and economic interest. The Alliance is a division of IFSA-Butler. IFSA-Butler and the Alliance currently operate programs in Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic, Ecuador, England, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Scotland, Spain and Wales. Institute for Study Abroad is registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. CONTACT US AT: 6201 Corporate Drive, Suite 200 Indianapolis, IN 46278
