What inspired you to create the Amsterdam AI Short Film Festival, and how do you envision its role evolving in the coming years?

The Amsterdam AI Short Film Festival was born out of both curiosity and necessity. I was experimenting with AI tools to improve my music videos and stumbled upon a whole new language of storytelling. It felt like discovering a new instrument something that allowed for unprecedented freedom, speed, and experimentation. But more than the tools, I was inspired by the people the growing global community of artists, technologists, and misfits who were doing extraordinary things in isolation. The festival became a way to bring them together, to give this emerging culture a stage, a voice, and a sense of belonging. Amsterdam, with its rich history of counterculture and innovation, felt like the perfect place to start.

Looking ahead, I see the festival evolving into a kind of cultural embassy — a hub for exploring how emerging tech and ancient stories can collide in beautiful, unexpected ways. I want it to be a launchpad for underrepresented voices, indigenous creators, and experimental thinkers who might not otherwise have access to this kind of visibility or technology.

Do you believe AI is fundamentally transforming the notion of creativity in the arts, or is it more of a tool that extends human imagination?

I think it's both and that's what makes it so exciting and a little terrifying. On one hand, AI absolutely extends human imagination. It allows artists to iterate at lightning speed, collaborate across languages and disciplines, and visualize things that were once impossible. It democratizes access to high-quality production, which is especially powerful for marginalized communities.

But on a deeper level, AI is challenging our very definitions of authorship, originality, and intention. When a machine contributes to an artwork, where does the human end and the algorithm begin? That ambiguity is what makes AI art so compelling — it's not just a tool, it's a co-creator. And that forces us to rethink what creativity even means. Ultimately, I see AI not as a replacement for human creativity, but as an evolutionary partner one that pushes us to dream bigger, work smarter, and tell stories in entirely new ways.
