The decision to be an employee or an entrepreneur is a critical decision. There is always a great pull within us to decide if we want to move from the employee to entrepreneur status. Should we make the move or should we not make the move? We ask ourselves constantly what exactly it would take if we decide to make the move. Recently I made the move from being an employee to become an entrepreneur and I would like to share with you the major differences I have observed between the two phases. I hope after reviewing these differences, you will decide for yourself if entrepreneurship is the path you will take now or later on in the future. Being an employee comes with a low level of risk while the life of an entrepreneur comes with a high level of

risk. 2. An employee is assured of a monthly income while for entrepreneurs especially at the beginning of your business, if you don’t work, you don’t get to eat. 3. Employees get perks such as health care, pension, allowances and so on while for an entrepreneur, you don’t get these perks at the beginning of your business. 4. As an employee, you are told what to do; you are given targets and deadlines. In other words, your path is set for you. As an entrepreneur, no path is set for you; you have to literally define the path for yourself. You have to define your targets and deadlines. You have to learn to not just work hard but work smart also. If you don’t, you would be eaten alive by your competitors. I have observed that the transition from employee to entrepreneur needs adequate preparation and focus. But I would say it requires a major mindset shift which is the shift from having an employee’s mindset to having an entrepreneur’s mindset. The entrepreneurial road is exciting and filled with bumps and turns. But if we stay the course, we will experience the successes of entrepreneurship. I advise you start early on your entrepreneurship journey while you are low maintenance which means you don’t have many responsibilities for example, a wife and kids. If you stay focused, you would have begun to experience the successes of the entrepreneurial journey by the time you have the responsibilities. To any entrepreneur; if you want to do it, do it now. Are you tired of living the 9 to 5 lifestyle and do you want to be more flexible with your time? Do you want to make an impact on your generation and have your name written in the sands of time? Are you tired of living paycheck to paycheck and do you want long term financial freedom? The decision to be an employee or an entrepreneur is in your hands. No one can make that decision for you. Just remember that the longer you postpone, the harder it will be for you to make the transition. And when you do make that move, you run a higher risk of not having the skills or tenacity needed to survive in a highly intense and dynamic competitive world.
