Are you going through a tough time? Are you always told to stay resilient in difficult times? We could start by explaining what resilience really means. Resilience means ‘the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties’. It also means ‘toughness’. What does it mean to stay resilient in difficult times and why do we need to discuss it today? I have learned time and time again that in life you must be resilient. You must have mental toughness. My brother tells me all the time, ‘Ifeanyi, you’ve got to be mentally tough’. Life is not for the weak-minded. I have had to learn this lesson in so many ways. Your heart gets broken…stay resilient. You lose your job…stay resilient. Your friends abandon you…stay resilient. You lose a loved one…stay resilient. Is there really any area in our lives which we don’t need to develop the art of resilience? I honestly don’t think so. You could tell yourself, ‘I’m all good. Life is beautiful and so am I’. I don’t mean to scare you but the truth of life is no matter what, the tough times do come. They might not come as bad as they do for other people but they definitely come even if it’s just a trickle. So how exactly do we handle the tough times? How do we stay resilient in difficult times for the people who are currently in difficult times or for others who will encounter these difficult times later in life? I would like to share with you 6 tactics to help you stay resilient in difficult times.

1) Breathe Breath in deeply three times and relax. You can’t think clearly when you are tense so start by relaxing. It might seem impossible to relax in an extremely cluttered world amidst all the noise but it would do you a lot of good. Breathing would help to reduce the stress and tension within you.

2) Re-evaluate the situation Take time to assess the situation you are in. Look at the pros and cons. You might think there are no advantages but if you truly take your time to assess the situation, you would find some advantages. For example, if you lost your job, you might realize that you have some time to take care of your health which has probably been failing for a while. Also search deeply within yourself for the lost dreams and hopes you had earlier on in life. There just might be a new business or venture in you.

3) Be Flexible This is one major lesson we all need to learn in life. Don’t stay stuck in your chosen path. Life might just have opened up another path you didn’t see before. Until you breathe in deeply and re-evaluate the situation, you won’t be able to see new paths. The goals such as the amount of money you want to make or the dreams you have for you and your family might not change but be flexible with the route to achieve those goals.

4) Enjoy Life This is a bit different from taking three deep breaths. This would mean doing something you enjoy such as taking long walks, going to watch a movie, play, concert or comedy show. Just do something you enjoy that also relaxes you. It would help you to come up with new ideas and possible solutions. Sometimes when I feel stuck, I take a step back from the situation and I go watch a movie. When I come back, I feel better and I can think clearly.

5) Take Action After you have re-evaluated the situation and decided on possible solutions, take action immediately. Don’t postpone or make excuses. If you find it difficult to take action because you still feel down due to the difficult situation, become accountable to your partner or a friend. Tell the person the actions you plan to take and commit to report on the actions you have taken after a certain period for example, two weeks or a month.

6) Gratitude After all is said and done, be grateful for what you have in your life right now. You might have lost your job but you can walk and talk. You might have lost a loved one but you still have other members of your family or your friends. Being grateful helps you to stay resilient in difficult times and make room for better times which are definitely ahead. These strategies will get you through the difficult times. Just remember that these tough times do end but at the end of the day, ask yourself two questions? What have I learned from this difficult time? Am I bitter or better? Choose to stay resilient no matter what. I would love to hear from you on how this post helped you. Please feel free to comment, like and share the post with friends.
