written by: Candace S. Abbott ever one for cutting corners when it comes to glamour, Southern California has rolled out a throng of decadent rooftop pool lounges designed to trump the typical backyard soiree. Some of the silver-screen ready outdoor scenes are more posh than your living room and promise more thrill than the city’s latest nightclub. Others are handing over the keys to relaxation and a dose of la dolce vita. From Santa Barbara to San Diego, living the “high life” is the only way to spend the dwindling days of summer. And we know all the right places...

Petit Ermitage

T

hat age-old saying, “less is more,” holds true upon arriving at West Hollywood’s private gem, Petit Ermitage. The all-suite property sits on a quaint street and often goes unnoticed behind the lush landscape. But for those privy to the Cynthia Street resident, they know what unmatched magic can be found within and up top. Travel past the lobby’s antique gramophone, down the doll-sized hallways, under the hand-painted archways, up the circus-like mirrored elevator and you’ve arrived on the fourth floor, which is poignantly marked by an Erté print. A few steps across woven Turkish carpets and

the jewel box opens up to the Private Rooftop Club--a teak deck, Dutch tiled oasis. As the newest addition to the property, the rooftop shows its staying power with 360 degree views of the glittering Hollywood Hills, a saltwater pool, plush kumquat hued lounge beds and one giant cabana space. Afternoon lounging Petit Ermitage

at Petit Ermitage lets you achieve the utmost relaxation as tranquil fountains pour forth only to add to the worldly soundtrack heard all over. And when the suns rays have left you famished, you’ll look to the Butterfly Bar (borrows its theme from Kafka’s Metamorphosis) for an array of delectable, seasonal eats featuring everything from Jumbo Shrimp and Cactus Salad to a life-changing Garden Burger Pita. Sip on a housemade lemonade or one of the restaurants signature cocktails complete with herbs from the adjacent garden. This same fragrant garden offers up a little break from the cool waters and a foray into the rustic paradise that is a Wildlife Federation certified butterfly and hummingbird sanctuary. Book your stay on a Sunday and the pool turns into a film festival as they roll out the antique popcorn machine and show international films. Or if you prefer, you can just pop in for a weekend poolside lobster and champagne feast. Create a summer escapade with secret gardens, exotic accoutrements and artisanal flares--all poolside, naturally.

S

kipping the surf and the sand never felt so good. The Ivy Rooftop at Andaz San Diego is the perfect excuse to wave “bye bye” to the waves and head down to the Gaslamp to sip on a few refreshing caipirinhas and mojitos. Kicking off last Memorial Day, the Sunday fun at the Ivy Rooftop gives daylifers a chance to groove to local DJ sets, cool off and stretch out on the ultra-plush beds that surround the spot. The “sunsational” layout not only gives panoramic views of the San Diego skyline, but makes for an optimal tanning spot. Designed in the minimalist tradition, the Ivy Rooftop pool shows off a crisp decor with white lounge chaises and bright orange cushions accessorizing the Ivy Rooftop at Andaz San Diego

pool’s edge, canvas umbrellas and a host of modish furniture pieces for understated flare. When the San Diego sun glitters off the aqua water, you’re one-hundred percent sure that this is the kind of scene you want to last all day long. Problem solved. An appropriately dubbed, “Endless Summer” package wraps up all the goodness of the sunshine months into one super-sleek, unquestionably cozy cabana. Think a 42 inch HD Plasma television, comfy furnishings, two bottles of premium liquor, Evian, fresh fruit and a spa kit, complete with sunscreen, self tanner and lip balm. Seems more like endless pleasure. Don your Dior’s with a cut out bikini and say, “high.” l

The Perch at Canary Hotel

L

eave your troubles with the birds at the Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara. Situated against a backdrop of the breathtaking Santa Ynez Mountains, the Spanish style hotel features one of the most recognized rooftop pools in the town. Known for its commitment to luxury indoors, Canary Hotel follows through outdoors with The Perch. Here, unmatched views of the mountains, the Channel Islands and the Pacific are available, not to mention revered by pool parlayers north and south. Outfitted in Spanish tiles, so to reflect the theme of the property and the town, The Perch becomes a quaint and inviting option for soaking up sun and sipping Santa Barbara varietals. Especially, on wine and cheese Mondays. No pool party or local DJ’s spinning here, The Perch at Canary Hotel

just the SB breezes and an oversized firepit that begs for evening chats, a few canary yellow umbrellas at your service and poolside eats of your choice. Bougainvillea spills onto the roof and ivy dances around a chocolate trellis to gently tap your shoulder as you day dream. The Standard, Downtown LA

I

t’s a classic. A classic doesn’t mean out of style. The Standard Downtown never fails to lift a spirit, spark up a smile, provide a refuge or just make one memorable night. Acclaimed over and over, this pool is home to cutting edge design and an uber cool atmosphere. The locale forgoes traditional green astroturf for red, skips cabanas for vibrating waterbed pods and ditches day beds for sculptured lounges. Day or night the rooftop delivers. serious business--you know, chatting and noshing on a grilled cheese. What’s more is the systematic palate that sets The Standard’s tone--white and any color that pops, goes. This is a rooftop scene that gets it’s cred not only because of its look, but its location. It sits high enough to feel like you’re getting a stellar view, but low enough for you to look up The Standard, Downtown LA

and be mesmerized by the sleek city buildings. End up at the pool only to find you’ve left your bikini at home? Well, that’s not a problem because the Quicksilver vending machine (complete with swim trunks and sweet bikinis) isn’t far off. You’ll want to look dashing once you step into the infinity pool. And as for the happenings at The Standard, guests and social media buffs are always privy to what’s going down on the property, be it a set by a local DJ or just a super sultry Photographer: Nikolas Koenig pool party.

Casa del Mar

M

i casa es su casa? Precisely. Santa Monica’s Casa del Mar wastes no time in making you feel at home. Originally opened in 1926 as a beachclub and hotel, this Southern California coastal jewel was frequented by the who’s who of Hollywood and the L.A. elite. The property transformed over the years and reopened as the esteemed Casa del Mar in 1999. The old spirit of glitz had returned to the oceanfront and still lives today. Casa del Mar’s fifth floor rooftop pool lounge is a favorite among locals and Santa Monica visitors alike, because unlike the others, it offers stellar views of the Pacific, Santa Monica’s signature pier and happy beach-goers down below. The Casa del Mar

l

Palm Terrace, which happens to be surrounded by palm trees, carries out the same opulent feel of the interior to the exterior, with a deck crafted of Italian granite stone and a Mediterranean garden to outfit the space. This unique landscape conjures days of old as the all-brick property and charming French doors act as a backdrop for your poolside scene. A sparkling plunge pool and jacuzzi also make their home atop the property along with a host of chaise lounges and chairs. The ambiance is relaxed--light tunes, light fare, summer cocktails al fresco. And to take that relaxation a bit further, you can treat yourself to a cabana massage right there on the deck. Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

P

erhaps, you’ve experienced Hard Rock style daylife in Las Vegas. Well, everyone knows the California way is always a bit different. “Sunday Funday” seems so last year when matched up against the religious rooftop experience at Hard Rock Hotel San Diego’s Float pool lounge. It’s a holy day when some 1,500 sun worshippers hit the 8,000 square foot space for specialty cocktails, bites from the hotel diner-inspired restaurant Maryjane’s, and the beats of acclaimed DJ’s like Paul Oakenfold, Felix da Housecat and deadmau5, to name a few. Get decked out in your Sunday best as the Intervention party is a serious affair; one that’s not to be taken lightly. The adult playground features poolside favorites such as: Daybeds, VIP cabanas,

tables, a wooden and white stoned bar and an oversized astroturf area known as Woodstock; designated for dancing and mingling. Rooftop at the Hard Rock means outrageous views of the surrounding city, specifically the Gaslamp, and the perfect amount of sunshine. And if you’re one of those who only does cabanas, thank Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

yourself as you lap up the luxury in private digs complete with leather seating, a flat screen and mini bar. The contemporary space, designed by Michael Czysz, owner of award-winning firm Architropolis, also welcomes an A-list celebrity clientele, with names like Kim Kardashian, Brody Jenner and Jamie Pressly frequenting the party. The hobo? Oh no. And boo to bucket bags. For ladies whose mantra is “less is more, meet Lisa B. and her Original B Bag. The most practical and stylish addition to your bag collection has landed. Photographer: Tahra Jones

T

hose big name, Trans-Atlantic bags you know and love have served you for years, transforming your day-to-day happenings into one stylish mission after the next. But sometimes you don’t want to arrive on the scene with all of that baggage. Lisa Berck had that same thought in 2009 while walking her dogs, Button and Leo, only to notice that she was holding a cell phone in a bra strap and cash in the cups. This led her to create the Original B Bag.

LisaBerck Photographer: Rhonda Mazurek

Lisa B., a Temecula native and lover of hearts (check out the interchanging logo), realized that her busy world--complete with a husband, children, four grandchildren, two dogs and a castle-like home--didn’t support the oversized handbags that were taking over. So, in an economic climate where downsizing seemed to be a good thing, Lisa crafted handmade bags that are big enough for just the essentials--lip gloss, a cell phone, a passport, some cash, an ID and few credit cards. Not only the founder, but the designer, Lisa is at the forefront of the entire process. From incorporating

a memorable lining--a red satin, reminiscent of a sexy red bra--to the names of the styles, which bear the monikers of her daughters and granddaughters, to her fabric sources including ultra-soft leathers from a top-notch hide house in Napa. Lisa has worked her way into Atlanta, Dallas and LA showrooms and sold the big retailers on why her bag beats out the rest. Simply put, she does it all.

A

s for the actual bag, it’s a minimalist’s dream come true, measuring 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide and comes in an array styles and colors. B Bag features make as much sense as the bags themselves. Lisa designed each one with a fully functional chain strap that can be worn cross-body, as unique jewelry piece or even a sexy chain belt; a latch hook meant to attach to that big bag you can’t get rid of or a grocery cart and a signature set of charms like fleur de lys, hearts, angel wings and butterflies. Lisa calls this the “accessory that is a necessity” or an absolute “necessory.” Photographer: Rhonda Mazurek

Lisa has created a brand that is fluff-free and completely rational, not to mention sophisticated and fun. The stores sell out while devout “B Baggers,” crave Lisa’s next collection. And this fall, Lisa’s collection goes from “how did I live without it,” to “haute,” as she introduces the next level of her fashion empire--Lisa Berck, a higher-end collection of embroidered leathers, acid washed calf skins, exotic skins, minks, Persian lamb fur, a Chanel-esque

quilted bag and a host of furry boots and handbags. She’s done all of this out of her 700 square foot home office. It’s a production wonderland, where Lisa and her loyal team work until the wee-hours, sewing, attaching, designing, growing and marketing the line. What’s more is that Lisa’s personal journey is as riveting as her bags, as Lisa suffers from Fibromyalgia. But this woman is unstoppable. She manages to keep on day after day. The 5’11 designer is a

tenacious and excited being. She’s fabulous, always in heels and someone who was born for coffee talk. Lisa’s love for her family is real, her creativity has no limit, her belief in her fans exceeds the norm and her passion for her product is unmatched. The Original B Bag,

hile it seems easy to go the clutch or wristlet route, the B Bag is completely hands-free and a perfect addition to day and evening ensembles. Ms. Berck has even created some styles that pair perfectly with a bikini. Seven luxe collections, named for the girls that inspired them, make up the lot--suedes, leathers, faux croc and fur pieces covered in metal studs for some edge or Swarovski crystal for some bling. For even more signature flare, Lisa adds a red crystal heart and a red metallic wallet to every bag. So one is never without the glam-factor. There are no zippers, because zippers mean limits. However, stuff stays safe thanks to a magnetic closure. All style, all purpose baggage is easy to get into.

he product line? You swear by it. The haircare? Is there any other? The skin care? Prepare to be all about it. Victoria Garden’s celebrated, Jade Aveda salon is not only leading in the style department, but they’re leading Rancho Cucamonga in skin care. Take time out to experience the Elemental Natural Facial at Jade Aveda. Tucked away from the blow driers and the luscious coloring sessions, Jade Aveda’s spa is home to a softly lit hallway of treatment rooms. Once outfitted in your signature robe, you’ll soak your feet as stones gently massage your soles. This is a natural journey from the bottom up and draws upon the three of the four elements: earth, air and water. You decide the way things go with this facial. Choose from three aromatic oils (cinnamon, patchouli or rose) that are incorporated into this highly customized facial. Your facial begins with a cleansing so

deep you can feel your pores open up. Then it’s on to prolonged steam and an exfoliation to brighten the skin. This is where things get personal. That scent you opted for earlier is combined with a masque and carefully massaged into your skin. Hands and feet don’t go ignored as the masque penetrates deep into the skin. They’re given special treatment with Aveda’s signature hand and foot creams. One hot towel later and nature has taken its course on your face. Once hydrated, you’ll feel renewed and in line with the universe. Located within Victoria Gardens at 12505 North Mainstreet, Suite 200 in Rancho Cucamonga 909.646.8955 l www.jadesalonspa.com

t’s known for the dry climate, so the desert might be the last place you’d go for a hydration. That was until Pink Tanning and Body Spa Salon touched down upon the Palm Desert scene in August of 2009. Owner, Skincare Specialist and former aesthetician at La Quinta Resort, Danielle Pinkerton, shares her expertise with anyone who walks through her doors. As for the top-notch, must have facial on the menu, that would be the Regenerating Facial. This eighty minute treatment targets dryness and works to slow the hands of time. Danielle’s product of choice is the HSR (high skin refiner) line by Babor, a luxurious, all-natural line hailing from Germany and designed for people who want real results. A two step cleanse leads you through an experience of Babor’s own, Hy-OL, which is plant oil based and allows for a deeper, more milky cleanse. Then it’s on to a phytoactive cleanse, an enzymatic exfoliation, and a vitalizing mask to enhance blood circulation. Danielle believes in targeting

each client’s problem specifically. She can then apply a mask suitable for an individual’s skintype. Next, is a lifting eye treatment, be it a cream or serum that your peepers require. And no facial experience is complete without those extra pampering elements. At Pink, it’s a luscious hand treatment to soften your touch, and a traditional neck and shoulder massage. HydraFacial at Skin & Beauty Aesthetic Spa, Norco

eave it to the premiere med-spa in the Corona-Norco area to roll out with the latest in skin care advancement. The warm, Tahitian-scented sanctuary that is Skin & Beauty Aesthtic Spa recently introduced the HydraFacial. No doubt, this is one of the most advanced and results-driven treatments in town. It’s replacing traditional microdermabrasian by adding a “wet” element, therefore allowing cells to be hydrated and produce an optimal outcome. Through suction-style exfoliation and a series of serums (based on your skintype), the skin is renewed and rid of hyperpigmentation and fine lines to reveal softer, more youthful skin. Created by Edge Systems, this is more than a facial, but a technology that houses all of the necessary elements. From the serums, to the LED lights, to a self-cleansing system,

it’s all regulated through a touch screen computer. The sixty minute treatment has been getting rave reviews as it is showing greater results than the average dermabrasian session. With the use of various tips, the machine cleanses, exfoliates and extracts. A particularly enticing element to the facial is the use of the diamond tip, which is composed of real crushed diamonds that offers an aggressive, not to mention focused exfoliation. Another employed method is the use of LED light therapy. This destroys bacteria underneath and on the skin, stimulates collagen, and breaks up hyperpigmentation. And as if you weren’t already sold, another attractive feature of the facial is that HydraFacial preps the skin for a peel, making it more receptive. It’s recommended that you go in for a series of six treatments to begin seeing changes in your skin. That’s simple, especially when this outrageously effective facial incorporates a scalp and decollete massage. ucked into the Inland Empire’s wine region of Temecula, is the GrapeSeed Spa at South Coast Winery. A no-brainer spot to unwind, this spot also offers unprecedented skin care treatment. The perfect way to renew your skin? With a bit of champagne, naturally. But it’s not a flute you need, it’s a Champagne Facial. One of the only treatments of its kind in the area, this facial employs the extracts from a rare pinot noir grape. This becomes a yeast and in turn, stimulates regeneration. The ingredient is powerful, and offers up significant results by boosting the skin’s natural defenses and acting as a protector from environmental pollutants. Make it fifty minutes or eighty minutes of the good life. Either way, you’ll experience intense relaxation and a carefully selected product line that is tailored to your skintype. The kind of results you’ll get from this facial are the kind you been searching for. From the intense cleanse to the deep moisturizing methods, the treatment leaves the skin glowing--literally. The Moon Mani Dita Von Teese has been spotted sporting this style since she arrived on the scene. It’s an absolute in the world of burlesque and the fashion world has caught wind of its elegance. The moon manicure is a throwback trend with its roots in the 1930’s and 40’s and originally done with peach or rose tones. But these days, the moon manicure or the “reverse-french” has become a favorite among top designers like Thakoon and Ruffian who keep this style a staple on the runway. What’s more is this sultry style manicure has taken a twist and getting an update from designers like Dior and Chanel, who are mixing colors like nude and Bordeaux or navy and white or even black and beige. All Lacquered Up Consider this your “Who’s got it, who’s doing it, who’s wearing it” guide to nail trends for fall 2010. written by: Candace S. Abbott

Matte Polish Shine is superb, but subdued is so now. Fall 2010 fingers are all about deep colors with a flat finish. These less-than-lacquered looks made their debut at Alexander Wang’s show and continued right on through to DKNY. Whether it’s for you is TBD, but you might have a bit of difficulty staying away from some of the cool hues. Major brands like Zoya, Opi and Knock Out cosmetics have unveiled a throng of colors. So have the masterminds at Creative Nail Design, a.k.a. CND, who’ve developed a super matte top coat that stripes your varnish of glean and leaves you with a bit of twinkle. Sheer matteness. 3D Nail Art It’s always better in 3D. That goes for nail art too. A new trend that’s literally popping up all over is the 3D acrylic set. This is where a highly skilled nail technician (like the ones at Theory Nail Lounge in Upland) place small bits of acrylic powder (usually colored powders) onto an existing set and raise these small pieces into sculptures. The result is nothing short of fabulous as they manage to create flowers, hearts, petals and even Miss Hello Kitty herself onto your fingers. For more excitement you can add crushed pearls, beads, glitter and even rhinestones. Where to find it: Theory Nail Lounge in Upland, 909.257.8855

Textures Tracy Reese, who’s known for creating feminine silhouettes and memorable textiles, took the manicure to a whole new place. For fall 2010, she showed off colors from Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicures collection (available in colors: Bitter Sweet, Touch of Mink, Wet Clay, Fedora, and Evening Fog), which offers the benefits of a base, strengthener, a rich color and a top coat, and mixed them with a touch of feminine lace for a look that’s part edgy, part fem and part classic. The look pairs perfectly with all of the looks this fall is serving up--especially those sexy and sophisticated black lace numbers. Where to find it: Sallyhansen.com, lace from your local fabric store

CND Shellac Long lasting is key. How about a manicure that lasts up to 14 days? That day has arrived with the introduction of the newest technological advancement in nail care, CND Shellac. Built up of solvents, polymers and monomers, this scientific method passes the test. It keeps a mirror-like reflection and doesn’t chip, smudge or scratch thanks to a UV system and a hard as nails top coat. Application is a 30-minute process and drying time is down to zero. As for the Luscious colors, try “Fedora” (it’s a fall favorite). Where to find it: Salon O in Murrieta, 951.698.8100

Pole Vote... T by: Candace S. Abbott

he votes have been cast. The ballots are in. And the wait is over. Well qualified and ready to get the job done, Corona newcomer, Embody Pole Fitness, is taking charge of external affairs.

Pole-based fitness has been around for a while now. But last July it found a home in South Corona at the doing of Diane Boyle, a certified pole dancing and kettlebell training instructor. Embody Pole Fitness opened its doors to a warm welcoming as the ladies of Corona were thrilled to finally have a monotony-free workout option in their own backyard.

Diane, who for years traveled to Orange County and LA for her pole fix, decided a little over a year ago to grace the Circle City with a pole of its own. So she made a plan, signed a lease in February, hired what she crowns as the best team of instructors around and made Embody Pole Fitness a reality. Diane’s enthusiasm for pole fitness has deep roots. With a history in long distance running, hiking and mountain

Photographer Kristeen Moon

climbing (she’s climbed Mt. Whitney several times), she loves a physical challenge. The creativity of pole dancing coupled with the challenge and choreography gave Diane just what she needed. And do note this femme fetal has a B.A. in Computer Science and runs her own IT business. Pass a plush waiting room and into a pole dancing paradise, where one can’t help but marvel at the sophistication and elegance of the workout space. Red oak hardwood floors share the spotlight with mirror covered walls and twelve glistening poles (which spin for more advanced students). The room is laced with deep hued, almost black curtains, filled with fresh flowers and lit by seductive red lighting that turns every figure into an appealing silhouette. Pretty enticing! The beauty continues right through to the ladies room, a perfect violet space, meant to calm a girl down after an intense class. Classic molding and divine details make for what the owner dubs a, “very pretty space.” What goes on behind the curtains at Embody is nothing short of amazing. Women gather into the room outfitted in shorts and tanks ready to take on the pole. For the next 90 minutes, students experience a workout unlike any other, one that kicks off with stretching, light yoga, erotic dance moves and movement meditation and then moves on to pole work. Each class promises a new trick, fluid transitions and the learning of proper technique. Instructors at Embody (all professional dancers and pole dancers) work to gradually increase a student’s “vocabulary” while on the pole by adding 2-3 new moves every time they come to class. Then time to put it all together--the technique, the transitions, the freshly taught tricks and the languid movements--in a choreographed routine. The result? Pure confidence, sensuality and sheer joy. Most classes end with a free dance session or more eloquently put a chance

to “immerse yourself in the music.” And these are just the basics. Embody Pole Fitness offers three levels, from beginner to advance. Beginners learn the fundamentals and become acquainted with pole work, while the intermediate set venture into leg grips, one arm spins and core strengthening. As for the advanced group, who arrive in heels are onto inverted aerial and hands free movements and the spinning pole gets introduced into their lessons. All in all, students do more than burn a few calories, but develop an artistry. The benefits of pole dancing, besides becoming an absolute talent are, according to Diane, “drastic.” She claims that women begin to see results in the body not long after practicing. The upper body develops and sculpts as does the core. Many students develop increased balance and better posture as a result of dancing. But what Diane finds the most poignant, is the mental change that comes along with pole dancing. She believes that this method of exercise is designed to “change you.” Everything about the space, the practice and the energy is a reminder to “love your body and embrace yourself,” says Diane. She sought out to create a non-judgmental place for women to work on themselves, both physically and mentally. There’s no doubt about her success. With monthly events, burlesque classes, flexibility training (created by two Santa Barbara contortionists), boot camps, kettlebell training, dance hall cardio and hoop dance, Embody Pole Fitness is quickly becoming the IE’s hottest new hang out to get fit. With moves like these, Corona might get a name change from the Circle City to Spin City. 1535 E. Ontario Avenue in Corona. 951.310.3344 l www.embodypolefitness.com

CLUB KIDD

One Palm Desert business woman builds her brand by staying color conscious. Hers is the hippest club in town. But there are no strobe lights, no guest DJ’s, and no backlit bars here. Just shelves, isles, rows and rooms of girlish merchandise. This all access haven is known as Pink Club and Pam Kidd is the owner that makes it all happen. After seven years, people still flock to Pink Club for fashion forward and blinged out odds and ends. Favorite lines like Soul Revival, Miami-based Uno Luna and Veronica M., who designs exclusives for the boutique, call this place their home. Also, newcomers like Laguna Beach Jeans, Laguna Beach Jeans swimwear, and Miami-fave; Betty Bangs swimwear have also checked into “the Club.” The ladies are partial to the Betty Bangs collection of rock n’ roll inspired suits (think Rolling Stones, Motley Crew and Aerosmith ‘kinis embellished in hundreds of Swarovski crystals) and Pink Club is the only California boutique to carry the line. The party doesn’t stop at the cheeky clothing options. Everything

you’d ever hope to be covered in Swarovski is here. From crystal-covered Hello Kitty flat screens to baby binkies, custom covered wedges and Havainas, “Crazy Pill / Happy Pill” cases, pepper spray, t-shirts, hats, and the super-craved and coveted crystal iPhone case (sometimes with Hello Kitty). Pam works closely with designers to develop custom items for her customers and unique pieces that keep the ladies coming back. Most of the merchandise like golf bags, golf balls, the boutique’s signature tee and headbands show up in pink, obviously, but you’ll find a touch of red (vintage trunk style suitcase), blue (furry diaper bags) and black (crosses and skulls). Pam’s shop is a wonderland for any woman who can’t get enough of the fem scene. And if you want to deck your baby girl in sweet pieces, look to Pink Club for reversible tutus by Posh, baby Chanel-inspired pants, pink dresses, bows, furry cheetah lunch boxes, and Pinkalicious books for your big girl. 73130 El Paseo, Palm Desert. 760.779.0919

company known for designing Fortune 500’s. As for the looks throughout, that’s the doing of Amy Gaertner and Cara Cohn, two sisters who inspired the boutique’s name. The ladies are among Fashion Week’s finest and some of the smartest business women in town. They know what girls like. Cutting edge lines like Prairie Underground, Susana Monaco, Testament, Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent, Fifteen Twenty, Single, and fashionable staples like Saint Grace take over the floor. And that’s only a sampling of the list. Look onto the unique structure and there you’ll find a wealth of Tom’s Shoes. Head to the back and it’s a “baby boom.” Some of the most stylish pieces for babies (boys and girls) make She She their home. Darling tutu’s by Oppsy Daisy share the space with 3-D swimsuits by Kate Mac and Gigglemoon rompers. Treat yourself with a luscious leather bag or a ring of gold and precious stones. HEIRESS

Expect nothing short of the royal treatment and queenly finds at this spot--a celebrity favorite and local love.

Maybe you’ve heard about the boutique that is a celebrity magnet? Maybe you’ve heard about a boutique where you can find all things Swarovski encrusted? Or maybe you’ve seen the regal blue awning and golden figures that mark the spot. Either way, you’ve heard of Heiress, the Palm Desert must that’s been taking up residence for six years now. Down the stairs and into an absolute wonderland of sparkle, the celebrated shop is frequented by some Hollywood names you might know. Brittany Spears, Paris and Nicky Hilton, or Steven Tyler,

ring a bell? This boutique features exclusive pieces from True Religion, Bejeweled and Sky. What’s more is that Heiress is a Palm Desert Fashion Week favorite, with a host of crystal covered hats (the boutique’s own designs), tanks, dresses and sandals. And for those who can’t get enough of the bling, look to the jewelry case where peace sign, heart and cupcake necklaces reign supreme alongside dazzled bracelets and earrings. Heiress also carries authentic New Mexico turquoise. It’s love, right? Almost. You can’t help but pay attention the extensive Hello Kitty

collection. Off to the side of the shop is a case filled with the coolest kitten around. From quilted Hello Kitty bags and roll along duffles to crystallized lockets, belts, chains and phone charms, there’s no shortage of feline prowess. Get your baby blinged too. She needs an encrusted pacifier to go with her tutu and ribbons. And to kick your ensemble up a bit, score your sweetie a too cute tee reading, “What happens at Grandma’s stays at Grandma’s.” Heiress also creates their own line of seasonal dresses. The best part, there’s one size of each, so you don’t have to worry about showing up at the desert fete wearing the same gown as your neighbor. This boutique is also active within the community, sponsoring every major charity around--Big Brothers and Sisters, the Carousel of Hope Ball in LA, Desert Arthritis Association and many of the local schools. Shopping with a cause, sounds like a plan, just don’t forget your glittery cowboy hat. 73260 El Paseo, Palm Desert. 760.776.8252

Dog Day Afternoon by: Candace S. Abbott

Take a break. Spend some quality time with your pooch. Where? The latest outposts to hit the Inland Empire, Lazy Dog Cafe, Don’t Get Dirty Pet Spa and Ruff House Pet Resort are just a sampling of the dog-friendly locales that are popping up.

A

favorite in surrounding communities has made its way to the IE. The Lazy Dog Cafe joined the Temecula dining scene last May under the culinary prowess of Executive Chef Gabriel Caliendo. Ever since the doors opened, proud pet owners have been flocking to the restaurant for spot-on fare, unmatched service and a special menu--one just for their dogs. The Lazy Dog Cafe isn’t the average eatery. First, the design speaks to your canine instinct with bits of greenery throughout, large, funny photos of random dogs and “fire hydrant” style beer taps. You can’t help but feel you’ve been put in the “dog house,” but that’s a good thing here, where leather booths mix with dog-printed fabrics and gigantic chandeliers (crafted of Aspen logs) share space with modern lines and real ledge stone. Dog-centric art is all over the place. Oh, and you can’t miss the saying on the wall, “Live like a cat, drink like a dog.” It’s probably a reminder to try out one of the 21 beers that The Lazy Dog has to offer, or the local wines hailing from the Temecula vineyard, or one of the spot’s house made organic margaritas. An open kitchen filled with chefs donning white coats makes the menu options even more enticing. What will it be? The Rocky Mountain Wings or the super-tasty Beer Battered Fish ‘N’ Chips or the

mouth-watering Bleu Burger (a classic topped with hickory-smoked bacon and bleu cheese butter)? The fare gets defined as eclectic American with international touches (hummus trios, “inside-out” quesadillas, and penne carbonara). As for your pup, she’ll have the burger or a steak. Sit on the restaurant’s surrounding patio or kick back around one of two firepits and enjoy dinner with “woman’s best friend” and a few friends of your own. Finish up with a banana split served in a “doggie bowl.” Talk about a doggone good time. The Promenade. 40754 Winchester Road in Temecula. 951.719.1884. www.lazydogcafe.com

nother spot that has pups wagging their tails and owners smiling at the simplicity is Don’t Get Dirty Mobile Pet Spa. The four wheeled doggy spa is hard to miss as it’s cruising through the streets of Rancho, Fontana, Corona / Norco, Riverside, Chino Hills and surrounding surrounding cities. Marked by eye-catching colors--pink, green and more pink, the trailer is equipped with all the things that keep a puppy fresh and clean. The place is an air conditioned palace for a pooch with interior outfitted with slick pink workstations, a large stainless steel tub (that pours forth warm water), a heater and tons of natural light. The trailer also features a 50-gallon water tank and its own holding and runs off of generators. Dogs feel super special at the spa because at Don’t Get Dirty furry little things never have to hang out in a cage. Instead, owners and sisters April and Ashly, give pets one-on-one attention from start to finish. The team of two is committed to making animals look their best by offering luxurious treatments like Blueberry Facials (dogs love those), Hot Oil Moisturizing, Nail Painting, Highlights, Ferminators, Cologne, Tooth Brushing, Ear Cleaning and a bow (or bandanna) to boot. Both pet owners, April who’s mom to four English bulldogs: Baxter, Bailey, Bentley and Bella and Ashly who’s mom to three Chihuahuas: Frankenstein, Munster and Mclovin, grew up with dogs and horses, so their love for four-legged folk runs deep. The ladies take into consideration all aspects of the pet, from his age to his temperament

Offering 365 days of dog watching, the 43,000 square foot resort is located in Riverside. The resort is accessible to many Inland dwellers and a conscious place for your dog to hang while you vacation. The resort has several indoor and outdoor play yards (all fenced in and designed with rubber flooring) as well as one large outdoor play yard that is the “in” spot for so many fuzzy folks. The play yard is outfitted with grass and an above ground pool, and a wealth of play equipment. And with those Inland summer temps, dogs stay cool thanks to canopies and delicate misters. In vain of a camp setting, pets get paired with a “Pack Leader” to watch over them and lead activities for pets and their new-found friends. But before they join with a pack, pets are evaluated so they get grouped with the proper kind of buddies. The happenings on this property will certainly make any dog wag her tail--Movie Muttinees, ice cream socials and birthday parties are just a sampling of the fun that’s had here. Like the spa, Ruff House isn’t into leaving pets in kennels or cages all day and they work with pets to ensure the best stay possible. What puppy wouldn’t enjoy an afternoon nap or bedtime biscuit and soothing music? While your dog is boarding there’s also an opportunity to train. You can watch the whole thing via webcam too. Learning everything from ball chasing to good verses bad behavior, pooches spend time--daily--with a private trainer and get schooled on top-notch canine behavior. How posh of your pet. Ruff House Pet Resort isn’t only a doggy hotel, but a great place to integrate your new puppy through playgroups, participate in monthly hikes, daycare and events with other proud dog owners...yappy hour anyone? The privately owned dog resort is definitely the cat’s pajamas. 3035 Chicago Avenue in Riverside. 951.588.1200. www.ruffhousepetresort.com

Such Great Heights Born and bred in Redlands, Claudia Ollis, owner of Demi Things boutique, is known for the little things. But these days, she’s talking about doing big things.

A

s she bides her time between her two boutiques (one in Redlands and one in Laguna Beach), her new swimsuit line, her children, business meetings, guest appearances and everything in between, Claudia is adding another “to-do” to her list--boxing management. Claudia cozies up in one of the boutiques ultra-suede slipper chairs and reveals that she’s taken on the job of public relations manager for up and coming female boxer, Kaliesha West. That’s a lot for a woman who jump-started her business seven years ago by hosting accessories parties out of her home.

By Candace S. Abbott

Photographer: Mark Sacro

According to Claudia, “It all started with belts. Then there was denim and tanks. My business was growing even before I had secured a location.” So, in 2005, Demi Things in Redlands opened its doors, in a sweet complex just off State Street. Claudia (an unquestionably strategic woman), opened her first business with a goal to create a personal shopping experience, one where each client received one-on-one service. She shares that she opted out of the busy shopping district of the town because she wanted a certain shopper--one she could build a relationship with. Five years later, Claudia still honors her opening principles. She still creates a unique and utterly enjoyable experience for her clients and with the help of Petrona (her BFF and the Redlands store manager) they design lust-worthy vignettes throughout the shop, making clients crave the Demi Things look. There are so many facets to Claudia that to understand each one, you have to know her history. The radiant Libra grew up in the charming town of Redlands with her two sisters and one brother. She describes her parents, who still reside in Redlands, with great joy, sharing that her family is conservative and tight-knit. She was raised in the Methodist faith and still maintains some of those core values. Her father is a reader and very much the observer--the opposite of his

daughter. And though her home life was traditional, Claudia was not. She was always a risk taker and a fashion-hungry girl. She worked at Contempo Casuals during her high school years, was voted “best dressed” by her classmates and always stood out in her Z. Cavaricci’s and Material Girl-inspired looks. Shortly after graduating from Redlands High School, Claudia enrolled at Valley College to pursue a career in nursing, but soon realized that was not for her. So, she opened a nail salon with a friend. Simply put, from early on Claudia had to be her own boss and she knew she was destined to operate outside of the box. A tattoo on her body speaks to that. It’s an octopus. Each of the animals eight arms are holding something--it’s a reminder to Claudia that it’s not always easy to have a grasp on so many things in your life, but you maintain that grip for success. “If you were to cut off one appendage of that octopus, it would grow back and grow back stronger.” says Claudia.

So she filled her grip with the launch of Demi Things in 2005, and not long after she moved to Laguna Beach. Her tenacious and passionate spirit wouldn’t allow her to sit still. Claudia relocated with hopes of reconnecting with her center and just being a temporary “beach bum.” She took up residence in a gorgeous home across from the beach (and a stone’s throw from the uber-posh, Montage), where she hears the waves crashing and looks out at the horizon on the daily. But even the beauty couldn’t tame this lioness. In 2008, in the middle of what we all recall as economic turmoil, Claudia opened a second Demi Things outpost right on South Coast Highway. Within four weeks of calling Laguna Beach her new home, Claudia was expanding her empire. She says they “gutted the whole thing and did a lot of work.” The Demi Things Laguna Beach location was modeled after the Redlands store, featuring the same sweet-meets-sexy interior, plush seating, wise words on the wall (“look within, you’ll like what you see”), custom wallpaper, pretty pink chandeliers, treated concrete floors, visually delicious fashion vignettes and the sexy by way of glam clothing the boutique is known for. The spot is a favorite of many celebs, locals, and Bravo’s Orange County Housewives. Another success!

Claudia made a habit of morning beach walks dressed down in her sweats (from Demi Things, naturally) and her Uggs. And she makes time for AM meditation on the daily. This clarity of mind has brought her the success that she sees in her everyday life. When asked how she feels on what she’s built and what she continues to build, Claudia replies, “I always knew I wanted something huge. My ventures spread me thin and I couldn’t do it without my family, my faith and Petrona. But although I’m spread thin, I continually need to feed myself--it’s what keeps me going.” She goes on to say that, “It’s a day to day challenge, but I’m living an amazing life.” And there’s no doubt about that as she moves onto her next big project as PR Manager for up and coming female boxer, Kaliesha West. She’s been a boxing fan since she was a little girl, thanks to her father who boxed while in the army. When Claudia’s sisters were cooking with her mom, she was in front of the television watching a match. So, when Claudia met Kaliesha, who spared with Claudia’s older son Bobby, the opportunity for the two women to work together was golden. Claudia quickly became enveloped into the boxing world--attending big ticket Vegas events and spending time at the gym while Kaliesha trained and flying around the world for

her matches (shortly after ieStyle conducted the interview with Claudia, she was off to Peru on boxing business). According to Ms. Ollis, she wanted to, “diversify” herself. Moreover, she says “I want to change the face of women’s boxing. I believe in it.” And Claudia has cred as she’s been in chats with boxing big-wigs to make these changes. Her Facebook page is laced with images of her and boxing stars, flashing her million dollar smile beside the ring and encouraging the rising star. And of course, Claudia always finds a way to marry style into everything she does. She’s working on designing an athletic line, one where fashionmeets-boxing. Claudia’s tight with host of MMA girls who are into fashion, but there’s nothing out there. Leave it to Lady Ollis...she’ll make it happen.

Along with grabbing title belts and selling designer belts, this woman has her hand in swimwear. She opened a sister store to Demi Things Laguna Beach last July. Welcome Demi Swim Couture. Here is where beach babes with style come to find their bikinis. Claudia tells me that there won’t be any Roxy or surfer-girl type pieces between these walls, but a hot house for resort style finds. Lines like Christian Audiger, Hayley Bob, True Religion, CinaBaby and more will call this place their home. Also, on the horizon is a Demi swim line. As for her vision, Claudia can of course speak to that. “I want to open three more swim shops along the coast and become the biggest swimwear store in Southern California...I also see Vegas happening.” The self-proclaimed, “woman in a man’s world” is no doubt, fast becoming the “it girl.” But it’s not always crowd-wowing and “how you like me now” attitudes for Claudia. She always makes time for the three most important people in her life, her children: Bobby, Demi (who loaned her name to mom’s ventures) and Ryder. The party of four often cuddle up in Claudia’s bed for some TV time. The crew loves basketball (Claudia at the time predicted the Celtics would take the 2010 NBA title) and they love being a family, being open, being honest and spending time together. Claudia admits

to the challenges that come along with being a working mom, but gushes with pride over her kids. She seeks to instill a strong work ethic in them and a good sense of self. “I give them whatever I have,” says Claudia. Between her moving and shaking, travels (loves Paris and Barcelona) and tales, the girl has to stay stylish. She’s built a business of shopping, but she’s not a shopper. “No patience,” per Claudia. She’s a dress girl. She loves fedoras and luggage. Jewelry is key and platforms are a must; Claudia is only 5’2. Claudia is sucker for luxe and can’t pass up a designer shoe; Chanel, Zanotti and YSL as her absolute favorites. As for her can’t live without it item, that would be her Chanel Silver Gun shoe, which she wore to the premiere of the Orange County Housewives. It’s a no holds barred shoe crafted from a real gun. Claudia beams as she shares a secret, “Madonna and I are the only ones who own this shoe.” This woman is approaching business on a whole different level. She’s utilizing social networking and enjoying it. “I like Twitter. I’m getting good at it.” Over the years she’s learned her strong business sense and continues to learn more every day. “I put my heart and soul into things.” It almost seems as though there’s no stopping Claudia.

She’s an animal lover, has a secret temper (don’t get her going, folks), ran a half-marathon last year, loves watching the World Cup games (even at 4am), she sings, hangs ringside, spends time with her family, gives her all to her children, runs three boutiques, plans to open more, appears at A-list events, tweets, travels, facebooks, doesn’t like attachments, hopes to write a book, makes dinner, meditates and that’s just the short list. Well, there might be one thing to stop her in her tracks--the latest fall 2010 YSL shoe collection.

A Few of My Favorite Things... With Kacee Geoffroy, the Inland Empire bred girl with a worldly sense of style.

N

orco native, Kacee Geoffroy is celebrating her biggest year yet. As a mommy, a wife, a make-up design artist, and a self-made business woman, Kacee is always on the go. Every weekend she’s traveling from LA to San Diego, Temecula, Newport and back making SoCal’s blushing brides look (and feel) their best. As she catapults into her third year, Kacee is embarking on a celeb-status adventure, with her work featured in major wedding publications, Martha Stewart Weddings and The Knot. These two notable accomplishments come shortly after stints with

Banana Republic, working as the lead artist on Food Network’s “Private Chefs of Beverly Hills” and a host of runway shows. When the MAC Studio and Fred Segal trained Kacee isn’t making the magic happen on someone’s special day (she currently has 40 special days this year), she’s kicking back with her local Stroller Stride crew, soaking up sunshine with family in Balboa, or enjoying an outdoor meal with her charming baby girl, Capri, and her husband, Erik. In the midst of all of her happenings, Mrs. Geoffroy sat down with ieStyle Magazine to talk about a few of her favorite things.

Favorite Vacation Location? Capri, Italy. My husband and I visited Capri and just fell in love with it. It’s magical to me. Favorite Color? Pink. Favorite Cocktail? Raspberry Lemon Drop. One-piece or Two-piece? Two-piece. I like to mix and match. Favorite Scented Candle? Voluspa Saijo Persimmon. I love the jar it comes it. It’s so pretty.

Favorite Make-up Line? Right now I’m in love with NARS. I’m loyal to MAC, but I can’t get enough of NARS.

Also, though it’s very “unglam,” I swear by Mary Kay foundation. I sold the product in college, so when I started my business, I just began using it. I’ve tried tons of foundations over the years, but nothing gives results like Mary Kay. It has a great finish, it’s light, comes in every color, stays well and almost gives you an airbushed look. I love it. Favorite Toothpaste? Anything with whitening. Favorite Book? I’m a Twighlight reader. I’ve read them [the books] twice. Favorite Thing About Late Summer? I’m smitten with BBQ. Eating outside with wine is my favorite. I also love Balboa. Every September my family and I rent the same beach house and stay for the entire month. Just relaxing.

Closing Statements? Sometimes, I just have to pinch myself. My “life bubble” is so happy and so solid, I sometimes can’t even believe it. I have such a beautiful life and I’m so grateful. To Book Kacee or see her work visit her website: www.kaceegeoffroy.com

Favorite Hotel? The Grand in Del Mar. They always treat me good there and they just do it right.

Favorite Time Of Day? Around 5:30, when my husband gets home and we sit down for dinner together. Favorite Flower? Peonies. Favorite Thing About The IE? It’s like a little treasure with a booming culture. I love how

Summer cocktails are best served in the sun. But the high-calorie count makes those adult beverages a little less enjoyable. The solution is not an extra two miles on the treadmill, but a few recipes for low-cal (tres delish) sips. Say goodbye to the 600 calorie margarita.

Belmont Skinnygirl™ from Bethenny Frankel Combine 4 tablespoons of vodka 3 Tablespoons of club soda 1 Tablespoon of Peach Schnapps 1 Tablespoon of orange juice Serve over ice Garnish with an orange slice Photographer: Dick Lowry

Infused Cocktails from Dave Northrop of Rush Street Infuse 4 cups of water with 1 chopped heirloom tomato, 1 lemon, 1 bunch of parsley, 12 slices of hot house cucumber. Infuse water in the refrigerator for at least 1/2 an hour and strain through a cheese cloth. Add 1.5 ounces of gin or vodka to ice (in a tall Collins glass). Top with infused water 3/4 full. Top with sparkling water (for fizz & texture). *you can infuse with an array of ingredients to infuse water, according to Dave, including: mint, lemon, lemon & herb (verbena, basil or rosemary), oranges, grapefruits, lime ginger & lemongrass (with honey simple syrup) [side bar to this cocktail, is a quote from Dave] “One of my favorite things I came up with was that most cocktails use simple syrups, juices, or flavored liquors to structure the profile of a cocktail. A lower calorie option is to infuse water with flavors & use that as the cocktails structure.”

Low Calorie Cheery Balsamic Mojito from Ross Pangilinan of Leatherby’s 1 Shot cherry Bacardi rum Muddle 12 mint leaves 1 Ounce lime juice 1 Tablespoon of balsamic 1 Tablespoon Stevia, Sweet n Low or honey and 2 ice cubes (until mint is pulverized) Add 6 oz of sprite zero and a few more ice cubes Stir and serve

St- Honoré 75 from St-Germain Combine 1 part St-Germain and 1/4 part freshly squeezed lemon juice into chilled fluted glass. Top with champagne. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Rosangel Margarita from Rosangel Hibiscus-Flavored Tequila

Coconut Kaffir Martini from Lulu Derouen of Pinot Provence

1 1/2 Ounce Gran Centenario Rosangel 1/2 Ounce premium orange liqueur 1 Teaspoon agave nectar Juice of one lime 1 Teaspoon freshly squeezed orange juice 1 Teaspoon cranberry juice Splash of ginger ale 1 1/2 Cups of ice

4 Ounce coconut juice; fresh 1 Ounce Kettle One Vodka 2 Lime wedges Shake with ice to chill and serve in martini glass. Garnish with torn kaffir lime leaf & fresh coconut shaving (add Stevia for a sweater version).
