Downtown Gains Uptown Style by Candace S. Abbott

Downtown Riverside ups the ante by adding chic to their resume

Behind a mass of stylized, modern buildings lies a charming enclave that conjures images of a lifetime passed. From Spanish-inspired facades to quaint antique shops and tree lined streets, Downtown Riverside has evolved to become more than the place you take your visiting grandmother. Sipping unique 22 ieStyle April/May 2010

varietals, unwinding in a Tuscan villa, snacking with girlfriends, spending a Saturday morning at the farmer’s market or taking in the latest Broadway production are just a few of the finds that have made Downtown Riverside a “must” among the Inland set.

A

short of decadent. Plus, it’s more than fair to call 7,000 square feet palatial. Such is true when you spend five minutes in the tranquility room—an area boasting healthy snacks and fine tea, Venetian chandeliers, foiled wallpaper, comfy couches and where lounging in cozy cotton robes pre and post-treatment truly enhances the overall experience. Kelly’s Spa is host to 12 treatment rooms and five outdoor villas (each baring the name of a location in Tuscany) complete with glowing fireplaces, barrel-vaulted ceilings and luxurious linens. A rich color palate translates the essence of Tuscany throughout the space as do a wealth of hand painted frescos. According to Kelly, she’s “gathered the best spa treatments used throughout Italy and the world and brought them to this spa.” Her signature treatment, Kelly’s Fountain of Youth Signature Body Treatment, is designed to showcase just how luscious a lazy day can be. A grape seed scrub is the prelude to a hydrating green tea and ginger body wrap. As your dermis takes in the goodness, your scalp is massaged and treated with natural conditioners. A rinse later, arrive back at your bed, which is adorned with fragrant rose petals, and get a classic rub down. Two hours later, you’ll emerge a more serene guest, naturally. But no visit to Kelly’s Spa is complete until you’ve spent some time in the eucalyptus-infused steam room.

dorning the exterior hallways of the Mission Inn is images of a wistful blonde, ushering you along with a promise of relaxation and tranquility. The sweet smell of healing oils emanate from the surroundings while an inviting fountain lures you in. You’ve arrived at Kelly’s Spa, the quintessential Tuscan sanctuary and personal creation of Kelly Roberts (who along with her husband, Duane, owns the Mission Inn). Though the property’s roots are Spanish, Kelly’s Spa successfully melds indigenous architecture with European luxury. Starting your visit with champagne and rich chocolate Located in the Mission Inn at: 3649 Mission Inn Avenue truffles or a juice infusion (served in a champagne flute) meant to detoxify, calm, (951) 341-6725 energize and refresh your being is nothing www.kellysspa.com ieStyle April/May 2010 23

Cupcake Walk

T

here was a time where the only sweet treats in these parts came from your kitchen. But in December 2009, that changed… drastically. Riverside welcomed the first bakery with a hopeless devotion to cupcakes. Casey’s Cupcakes & Cappuccinos touched base with a sticky sweet image and even more delectable offerings. Casey Reinhardt, pageant sweetheart, former MTV “Laguna Beach” golden girl and accomplished daughter of Kelly and Duane Roberts, drew from a rich childhood and endearing memory of her great-grandmother when she decided to bring homemade cupcakes to Riverside locals. Casey has dubbed her great-grandmother’s recipe as “lovely,” “luscious,” and above all, “irresistible.” The cute as a button shop sits on the exterior of the Mission Inn and deviates from the rustic aesthetic with white double doors and a candy pink awning. 24 ieStyle April/May 2010

Inside are bright pink walls, sparkling chandeliers, black & white images of Casey, and a host of cupcake girls donning 50’s style dresses, hot pink aprons and classic Converse All-Stars. Casey candidly told ieStyle Magazine that the space is “a true reflection of my own personality and style. The goal was to design a space that evokes an old-fashioned Parisian bakery, but with a Hollywood twist, of course!” It’s the uncompromising space, where you can catch up over Italian-style cappuccinos or munch on one of the 12 delicious flavors (and there’s always a “Flavor of the Month”). So, what is Casey partial to? The red velvet cupcake; It’s her personal favorite. Casey knew that the Mission Inn was an ideal spot to open her first cupcake locale, noting it as an integral part of her family and a sensible spot to share something delicious with locals and guests. And for $3.25 who can’t afford a taste of the good life? Located in the Mission Inn at: 3649 Mission Inn Avenue (951) 328-6908 www.caseyscupcakesandcappuccinos.com

ometimes spending the day wine tasting isn’t an option, but the craving for a full-bodied red, still doesn’t subside. That’s when you can feel free to look to 54° at Duane’s—Riverside’s official wine bar. As an appropriate accompaniment to Duane’s Prime Steaks & Seafood, the wine bar plays home to eclectic wines, delectable tapas and a modern city-style atmosphere. The premier spot features over 32 wines by the glass. Ever sampled a Château de la Garde 2006 vintage French Bordeaux? Probably not. So here’s your chance to sophisticate your palate. One of the most attractive features at 54° is that there’s no pressure to commit to a glass. You have options. Go one ounce, go four ounces or go six ounces if it’s your first time around with that Chassagne-Montrachet “Louis Latour”

French White Burgundy. You can already envision yourself tasting and pairing with friends, right? The seasoned staff is happy and eager to offer tips and educate on the wine, food, and WineStation®, an Inland Empire first. Expect temperature-controlled wine dispensing and an enhanced preservation system that ensures freshness and crispness from your first glass to your third. As for the eats, 54° offers a sophisticated menu of small plates featuring everything from the ultra-light—marinated olives and cheeses, to the mid-range—seared ahi skewers or lemon-butter scallops, to the heavier bites—lamb lollipops. The bronze-lit bar is an inviting, romantic-meets-masculine atmosphere, laden with rich wooden furnishings and delicate archways—all of which pair perfectly with the wine list. Foxy Lady Chances are you thought that a night of great theatre meant booking an East Coast vacation or inching through hours of traffic to L.A.; not true anymore. Riverside’s theatrical gem, the Fox Performing Arts Center, re-opened its doors in January to reveal a restored theatre dating back to 1929. Fox was once home to silent movies, as well as the much gabbed about spot to catch a sneak preview of “Gone with the Wind,” in 1939. But now, the 1,640-seat performance house will become the nest for Broadway in Riverside. After a three year rehabilitation project (Fox closed its doors in May 2007), the intricate details on each level of the tri-level space have been restored and the Fox Performing Arts Center revealed an expanded stage, plush velvet seating and updated lighting fixtures—all recapturing and 26 ieStyle April/May 2010

upping the glam factor. Like a precious jewel box, the Fox Performing Arts Center exudes radiance onto Riverside’s Market Street and beyond. They’ve kicked off their Broadway series (99.1 KGGI’s Evelyn Erives is the official voice of Broadway Riverside) with “Annie” and intend to move forward with other headliners like cult favorites “Hairspray” and “Jesus Christ: Superstar.” Moreover, the theatre is where Inland Empire music junkies can go to take in grade-A talent. Pat Benatar, David Sedaris, and America take to the IE stage. Located at: 3801 Mission Inn Avenue (951) 788-3944 www.foxriversidelive.com

A Day in the Life of… Evelyn Erives by Candace S. Abbott

We’re following the Inland Empire’s First Lady of Radio… Evelyn grew up in Fontana and spent her early days hosting KVCR and producing the morning show. By the age of 20, she established her spot on the Inland Empire’s home station, 99.1 KGGI. And now she’s a devoted wife, mom, and philanthropist who starts her day before Starbucks is open and ends her day amidst the area’s finest. ieStyle Magazine spent the day hanging with Evelyn Erives to learn all the things that keep her upbeat even when she’s off the air. 4:40am: ieStyle arrives at the home of Evelyn Erives just as Evelyn heads out the door with her Ed Hardy “bag of tricks.” According to Ms. Erives, it’s hard to dress at this hour, but she still looks smashing in a bright V-neck tee, jeans, stiletto boots and shows off her freshly colored reddish locks. We stop for coffee and head down the 91 Freeway to the 99.1 KGGI Studio while listening to news radio. 5:10am: Arrive at studio and get situated for the show. “Jeff and Evelyn in the Morning” on in twenty… 5:30am: 99.1 Morning Show is in full affect. Jeff and Evelyn belt out their signature wake 48

up song, appropriately titled, “The Wake Up Song.” ieStyle notes Evelyn’s pleasant singing voice. 5:50am: It’s time for a snack. Evelyn pulls the first “trick” out of her bag—a protein shake… followed by her Blackberry (a girl’s gotta Tweet). 6:00am: Evelyn gives her signature weather report (looks like rain tomorrow). 6:30am: Taking calls from listeners to add to the guest list. Evelyn has an event this evening. She’s hosting an Elle Macpherson Intimates lingerie soirée.

Evelyn Erives

10:15am: Post-show, Evelyn heads to her office to update her webpage and blog that are filled with some of the news you may have missed earlier during the show.

6:50am: Between segments, Evelyn shares with ieStyle stories about her daughter, Juleen (a reformed Ke$ha fan) and tells us that she’s very pro-women in radio. 7:00am: Evelyn gives 99.1 readers their daily dose of gossip. The lady writes her own news stories and delivers on the hour. From publicist clean-ups to American Idol, Evelyn’s in the know.

10:30am: Evelyn dishes on some old school favorites like “The Real World Miami” and “The Grind,” how she feels such a kinship with her listeners (they’ve gone through so much with her in the last eight years and oftentimes stop her on the street for a casual chat), and how women need to be self-sufficient and find that guy that loves and supports them unconditionally (for Evelyn, that would be Chris). 12:00pm: Office party-time! Chili, chips, pizza, and Pepsi are all in attendance. Count the First Lady of 99.1 in! A competitive game of Apples-to-Apples goes down and Evelyn takes a box of Wheaties to secure her win. They’re like family in this office, really.

8:00am: Evelyn and Jeff host an in studio guest—a comedian, who shares choice words 1:30pm: Sneak out of the office (it’s a super busy with listeners. But, Evelyn tells ieStyle, with day) and head to Tyler Mall. Evelyn scopes out live radio… anything can happen! the goods in the lingerie departments… Macy’s, Nordstrom, Victoria’s 8:42am: Jeff and Evelyn give away Mariah Secret? Loving it all, but finding the perfect Carey tickets along with a side of cash. Who piece isn’t always easy. knew the 99.1 drive-thru window was so good?! 9:00am: Still operating at one hundred percent, Evelyn gives the gossip again (in case you didn’t hear it the first time) and her “buzz word” for the day. 10:00am: Evelyn concludes the show with her 9:50am Bonus Buzz and a tonguein-cheek joke. All in a day’s work.

ieStyle April/May 2010 49

Evelyn Erives

7:00pm: Evelyn gets some family time. She and Chris manage to take in an episode of one of their faves, “Jeopardy.” 7:30pm: Time to start getting ready for the evening’s festivities. The kiddies are off to grandma’s.

1:45pm: Macy’s wins! Evelyn scores a pretty sheer black robe with ruffles galore and itty-bitty night shorts to accentuate her evening look. 3:00pm: Arrive back at home but there’s no time to rest. Evelyn preps for a planning meeting with her team. What team? The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, naturally. She’s been nominated for the 2010 Woman of the Year! Go Evelyn! 3:30pm: Talking bar nights, shopping events, and mani-pedi parties makes the work day seem like a piece of cake. Evelyn’s friend (and owner of Manhattan’s Salon & Spa) pops over to offer up some help. 4:15pm: Evelyn’s campaign manager and doting hubby, Chris, helps to lock in dates and keep things running smoothly. 4:30pm: Aiden’s up. Evelyn’s two-year old cutie comes down and craves nothing more than his “mama.” Holding a baby and balancing a calendar while talking lingerie is the activity of champions, indeed. 5:30pm: Finally, some down time. The super-cute, Juleen arrives (probably one of the most stylish seven-year olds in the IE). She matches her mom in looks and gusto. 50

ieStyle April/May 2010

8:30pm: Evelyn and Chris are ready to go. She looks fab in her Elle Macpherson chemise, shorty shorts and that little Macy’s number… oh, and a pair of knock out boots. Vamp it up! 8:45pm: Heading to San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino and listening to the new Timbaland. Evelyn’s totally digging the track with Katy Perry. 9:00pm: Arrive at San Manuel and off to the Pines for hair and makeup. 9:30pm: Evelyn gets done up, Hollywood style. A soft and sultry eye look and sleek locks pair well with the sexy theme. 9:40pm: Evelyn sips on a coffee, but secretly craves a Red Bull. It’s been a long day!

Evelyn Erives

11:15pm: Models hit the catwalk—garters, lacey shorts, barely there bras, and nighties in feminine hues reign supreme. 12:00am: Evelyn closes the show with an infectious energy, encouraging people to stick around, enjoy a cocktail, dance it up, and win a few gifts. 12:15am: Evelyn makes her way to the DJ booth and gives away an Ed Hardy bag (of tricks) and some CDs, then poses for pictures with devoted listeners. 12:30am: Evelyn and Chris take to the dance floor for a few. 1:00am: The day has come to a close. Chris s uggests a stop at Del Taco (it’s one of the IE’s finest) for bean and cheese burritos. 9:55pm: Evelyn talks to ieStyle about how awesome the Elle Macpherson line looks and how she wouldn’t mind a nightie or two. Conversation turns to her magical wedding day. Evelyn and Chris made it official in Maui at the Olowalu Plantation House. To this day they talk about going back… it’s their special place (Juleen’s too. She’s dubbed the beach, “Juju Beach”).

1:30am: Back at Chris and Evelyn’s house. They’re both craving some sleep and so is ieStyle. Evelyn thanks us and heads inside. In three hours she’ll do it all again. Sweet dreams Ms. Erives!

10:15pm: Evelyn does a quick rehearsal, preps her intro, and waits patiently. 11:00pm: Show’s on! Evelyn comes out (ironically enough, to Ke$ha’s, Tik Tok) filling the room with energy and her signature charm. She’s here to let fashion show viewers know that “the sexy” is hitting the stage. There’s excitement all around. 11:10pm: A scantily-clad go-go hits the runway and shimmies to Kylie Minogue’s “Cherry Bomb” in furry boots and a pink boa.

Smoke Signals

When there’s smoke there’s fire? Not so in the make-up world. Owners of SAM Makeup Studios, Sharon Tabb and Melissa Chaires, show off a fresh approach to the beloved classic--the smokey eye. By Candace S. Abbott

The Bronze Smokey Eye

Weddings

The IT girl’s bride guide to what she wants now

First comes love, then comes marriage The Association for Wedding Professionals International forms a fruitful union with the Inland Empire

M

any times it’s been said that the one business that will never go out of business is the wedding industry. And despite the current economic climate, the average cost of weddings in 2009 was at $28,385, which was only a 5% decrease from 2008, according to a recent survey conducted by The Knot Inc. “As the economy continues to affect consumer spending, brides remain committed to planning a memorable event and are thoughtfully cutting back,” said Carley Roney, editor in chief of The Knot Inc. With positivity like that in mind, it made sense that the Association for Wedding Professionals International move forward with an Inland Empire chapter. After all, we like weddings in these parts. On February 18, 2010, the Association held their inaugural event at Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona. Award winning industry professionals gathered amidst the Mardi Gras themed ballroom. Over 60 wedding professionals along with five wedding establishments in the region--John Goolsby of Godfather Films, Vision to Mission Entertainment,

Loving Images Photography, and Koyal Wholesale were all at the unprecedented event. The AFWPI Inland Empire Chapter, which is headed up by Cristina Barragan, owner and event producer of Unforgettable Events, and Leslie Velazquez, owner of wedding planning company Veils and Fairytales, is a worldwide organization for wedding professionals including everyone from florists and caterers, to venues, planners and unique odds and ends. Both Cristina and Leslie noticed the absence of such an organization in the Inland Empire, and with the region’s popularity among the soon-to-be wed, it was obvious it was for more than a luxury, but a necessity. According to the two women, “It’s important for those in the industry to get together to exchange ideas in an effort to innovate, grow and provide promising job opportunities and economic development for the IE.” From the vineyards of Temecula, the historic Mission Inn, the pristine landscapes of Palm Desert and Palm Springs and the myriad of country clubs in between, there is no shortage of wedding bliss. Moreover, there is no shortage of resources in the area. With many of the attendees having been awarded the 2010 Bride’s Choice Award from WeddingWire / Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc., it’s no question there is an insurmountable level of talent and greatness close to home. Tales from the Boudoir Temecula photog creates a place where thongs and therapy meet By Candace S. Abbott

Boudoir It’s a word that conjures up images of sensuality, underpinnings strewn across lavish chaise lounges, powder puffs sitting pretty on vintage vanities and come-hither tunes flowing from an unknown source. You’ve always imagined yourself in the midst of such a setting, but never knew how to make it happen. That was until “boudoir photography” arrived on the scene. Ella Diumea, owner of FD Atelier, is a Temecula based photographer who has become the go-to for scantily clad shots. According to Ella, 64 ieStyle April/May 2010

boudoir photography is as much an extension of showcasing your sexuality and femininity, as it is a way to show your individuality. Ella had hopes of capturing her pre-baby body and figured this fine art photography approach was ideal. Not only did this experience give her a strong appreciation for the woman she was before her baby, but provided her a better understanding of her clients and how to consult them before, during, and after their shoot. Ella has watched the nature of boudoir photography evolve from a suggestive gift with the intent to rekindle romance into a way of celebrating womanhood.

FD Atelier’s website opens to a continuous stream of women decked in lace, pearls, bows, boas and marabou, all claiming that they “did it” and shooting back with a “now it’s your turn.” This comfortable tone displayed on Ella’s website, manifests itself in her work. So just who are Ella’s clients? Brides who want to give their new husbands a little something extra--a black book of images; just a little reminder that his wife is eternally the sexiest woman known to man. Those who want to celebrate a milestone birthday or who’ve just come out of a life-changing situation and want to capture the essence of who they are now and how they’ve overcome. Oftentimes, according to Ella, post-op women come in to show off a new body--waists, breasts, or even noses. And boudoir photos are not limited to svelte figures, but full-figured women as well, and those schedule a session as incentive to continue to lose and work towards a happier, healthier person. The beauty of this artistic approach is that it goes behind amping up the sex factor, but acts as a means of encouragement and overall empowerment. Especially, for those women who are fresh out of abusive situations. Perhaps, boudoir is synonymous for confidence?

What does a Provocateur Boudoir session entail? Lighting that flatters every curve, a hired team of make up artists to primp you to perfection, and an unfathomably large collection of lingerie--all at your disposal. This is where you get to unleash your inner Victoria’s Secret model (without worrying about anyone walking on your pouty face). Ella and her team guide you the entire time, suggesting poses that accentuate you. Additionally, creating vintage-like sepia or black and white are no problem. Ella can do it all! Retouching and enhancements are your friends too. Get ready to paint your toes red, let your pin curls loose, and unleash your inner pin-up. ieStyle April/May 2010

Commitment Issues On the eve of a new decade, Sin City proves to the world that a commitment issue isn’t always a bad thing

L

as Vegas is like that bad boyfriend that can always make you come back. Why? Because it’s a place that cleans up nicely and knows to say all the right things. Forget that you lost your rent money and your shoes during your last visit; you had the time of your life. And that thrill alone is enough to keep you jetting up the I-15 again and again… and again… and again. Well, just as you’ve settled comfortably into the idea of new explorations, Las Vegas makes its way back into your heart. Call it the act of a selfish suitor or a stroke of genius, but during the final weeks of 2009, MGM Mirage rolled out their biggest project to date, CityCenter— a sleek 8.5 billion dollar collection of reflective buildings—to win you back. 68 ieStyle April/May 2010

To some, CityCenter might resemble a futuristic airport, but this is, as Caesar Pelli, worldrenowned designer of Aria put it, “Twenty-First Century Las Vegas.” Thanks to this second life, Las Vegas emerged kitsch-free, laced with luxe, equipped with a new attitude, and wearing the stamp as the world’s largest private sustainable development. But visitors needn’t worry; none of that quintessential Sin City flair was lost in the transformation. You’re still made to feel like the most important person to walk through the doors, gaming still reigns supreme (but only at one of the properties) and cocktails still flow freely. The landscape of the new wonder world is such: Aria, Vdara, and Crystals. Each place offering up a distinctive vignette of what Las Vegas has become.

W

hen Aria (the only gaming property on CC soil) opened its doors to the public, a lobby drenched in natural light, floral trellis overhead and a fresh vanilla scent emanating from the vents were subtle hints that the “bad boyfriend” had changed his ways to reveal a softer, more conscious approach to the most indulgent of cities. The property employed drought tolerant and indigenous greenery, the guestrooms have low-flow water features (that don’t mess with your aquatic session) and chefs like like Michael Mina and Jean-Georges Vongerichten

were brought in to uphold a culinary consciousness. But change is not code for compromise at Aria. In fact, it has worked to the property’s advantage. Visitors delight in the natural light and the Light Group for their latest decked out watering holes. The Deuce, a high limit club that occupies the noon to 4am spot, faces a wall of cryptic Christopher Walken images. But there’s nothing mysterious about the interior. It’s gold, it’s majestic, it’s over-the-top, and it’s unquestionably seductive. The second spot bearing the Light Group’s insignia is The Gold Lounge. An ultra-swank

pad with a life-sized horse lamp at the door pays homage to the King—Elvis. This black and gold space features original patterns from Graceland, sexy black velour seating, and cocktails with a nod to Mr. Presley. Sure to become your favorite lounge on the property, The Gold Lounge makes its home across from the Aria Theatre where Cirque du Soleil performs Viva ELVIS, an acrobatic interpretation of the King’s classics like “All Shook Up,” “Got A Lot O’ Living to Do,” and “One Night With You,” bring Elvis back to life. An auburn haired, Pucci clad Priscilla Presley said, “Elvis would be pleased to know that he’s back in Vegas, the way he should be.” Cut across the property for the dining experience. Sit in a carefully designed box like a china doll at Blossoms, sample the curry at Lemongrass, the ravioli at Sirio Ristorante, foie gras crème brûlée at Sage,

or take advantage of the twenty-four hour café fare at Vettro. Aria’s culinary scene is not one to be overlooked. Whether causal or fine dining, it rivals Sin City’s finest. And in keeping with tradition, Aria features the Las Vegas absolutes, an 8,000 square foot spa with sixty-two treatment rooms, Liquid (adult pool club… summer can’t get here fast enough) and HAZE Nightclub (another two-story, 20,000 square foot Light Group success). The 4,004 rooms at Aria defy the odds as some of the most technologically advanced slumber chambers in town. ieStyle April/May 2010 69

Waltz in to find that your room knows you better than you know yourself. The curtains open and the music chimes in, so to announce your arrival. Wake up to a Las Vegas city view or the surrounding mountains, thanks to floor to ceiling windows. Velvet and patent headboards, warm interior hues, marble floors, fresh orchids, panoramic sky villas and a private porte-cochère make your stay in Las Vegas personal again.

Another way Aria cares? It’s the only place in the world that would mix modern art and poker lessons, which are offered to the “royally flushed.” dara situates itself as Aria’s more dignified and less edgy older sibling. A non-gaming property, Vdara is ideal for the non-Vegas, Vegas experience. It’s elegant, quiet, and smoke-free. Like Aria, the property emits that majestic vanilla scent and gladly lets the light flow in.

V

Somewhat simplistic, Bar Vdara takes up a portion of the lobby space, with a whimsical patio where a modish adaptation of the hammock is on heavy rotation and floral infused rosemary cocktails get served—straight up, naturally. Along with proudly displaying a LEED certification, the property is an all-suite hotel, where the sleek spaces house stainless steel appliances, full kitchens, plasmas, luxurious bed linens, deep bathtubs and undoubtedly, the plushest bathrobes around. Be it a one bedroom, two bedroom or a two-story penthouse that catches your eye, the soothing color palate (luscious green and chocolate hues) will have you ready to move in—that is if the Spaghetti Bolognese on the in-room dining menu didn’t win you over first. These sweetly designed “apartments” make it easy to unwind after a massage, a chocolate body treatment, or an afternoon at the spa’s champagne bar. Vdara Health & Beauty Spa is 18,000 square feet of green beauty. 70 ieStyle April/May 2010

Holistic treatments and a eucalyptus sauna give a sneak peak at the spots commitment. How often do you go to Las Vegas for meditation? Almost, never. But now you will. Slip outside post-treatment and soak up the sun poolside, kick back in a daybed lounge, or jumpstart a cabana gossip session at Sky Pool & Lounge. The hotel’s rooftop pool sits above the grand entrance of the property with a minimalist design and a host of made-to-order cocktails and snacks.

Louis Vuitton—a two-story shop that’s akin to a design installation, not a shopping destination, KiKi de Montparnasse—the most decadent adult store on American soil, ILORI— shades galore, along with Tom Ford, Assouline and Nanette Lepore to highlight a few. If you haven’t maxed out your card with a new wardrobe, you will have worked up an appetite that could only be satiated by the offerings of Beso. Beef tartare, lobster bisque, and artichoke guacamole are welcomed starters, while

The way to a girl’s heart is through her closet and Las Vegas knows this well. Along with two stunning properties, MGM Mirage unveiled Crystals, a bi-level renowned shopping destination housing some of the biggest retailers in the world and the second location of Eva Longoria Parker’s beloved eatery, Beso. If the handsome fellow you met at HAZE doesn’t add drama to your stay, surely the exquisite architecture and design of Crystals will. The shopping space joins CityCenter in introducing an environmental standard to the “down and dirty” town, by bearing a LEED symbol and employing energy efficiency throughout. So you’ll feel like you’re doing your part to save the earth when you sit down for breakfast at Tiffany’s (diamonds go best with those crepes). Following behind the famed jewel house is

Natural Black Angus Beef Cuts, Paella, and Char Grilled Chilean Sea Bass are praised. An extensive wine list and signature cocktails also make for a nice, post shopping thirst quencher. All in all, CityCenter is that place that seeks to “change the world.” According to CEO Bobby Baldwin, “It might, but there is no doubt, it’s changed Las Vegas.” This all-encompassing, vertical city serves up more than you’d ever dreamed of and caters to a new decade or at least a new way of thinking. This is the thrill of something new and familiar all at the same time and you’ll love it. Isn’t that what the bad boyfriend always says as he waltzes back into your world with that first phone call? Designer To Watch Reckless? Never. Thoughtful? Always. Extravagant? Naturally. Meet Joni Frazier, the mastermind behind Prodigal Daughter—the hottest thing since last July.

72 ieStyle April/May 2010

While most twenty-three year olds are settling into the freedoms of adulthood, Joni Frazier is running her own business. The bright-eyed Claremont native launched her business, Prodigal Daughter, two years ago and officially kicked things off in Fall 2009. After her first season, there was no doubt that a signature look had been set—feminine fabrics, flattering silhouettes and signature pockets define this inaugural collection. Ms. Frazier’s an anomaly. She didn’t spend her days in design school or color-coding sweater racks. Instead, she developed a knack for fashion by studying inspirational designers like Diane von Furstenberg and Yves Saint Laurent; and gained a strong business sense from watching her parents (also business owners). The easy going, blonde designer, who bides her time between her LA and Montclair offices, is constantly thinking about her next move and works alongside an incredible creative team, who Joni says, she could not live without.

There is the Carlton Dress with its sexy racer-back form and lingering train—a must with tights or leggings as well as a playful-meets-sexy silk blazer. The Cambridge T—an off-the-shoulder, wide top that has an elusive train. And the pièce de résistance, the Romper, which boasts adjustable straps, front pleats, adjustable length and comes in every color from charcoal to purple. According to Joni, the all-silk collection is versatile, requiring the owner to build and accessorize as she sees fit. Prodigal Daughter doesn’t seek to wear its owner. Instead, it’s the line that offers a deeper message, by bringing out a woman’s confidence and demanding respect.

For spring 2010, Prodigal Daughter, who borrows its name from the Jeffrey Archer’s novel and nods to reckless extravagance, features a host of brightly hued staples that possess the line’s [sig] pockets. But when comparing the two collections, you can see how far Joni’s vision has come. She admits this herself, noting that spring is an evolution and shows “more of who I am as a designer.” You’d be hard pressed to find barely-there pieces meant for model forms (breaking the industry rule, the line goes up to extra-large).

As the spring duds hit local boutiques, Joni, a hometown homebody (who rocks the blazer from the collection along with jean shorts and killer booties), continues to drum up new ways to connect with her clients. From visiting with the people who love her work, to asking them what they want more of, Joni continues to build her brand and participates in charities like Be Perfect Foundation, that benefits those with spinal cord injuries. What does the future look like for Prodigal Daughter? It looks bright and complete with pockets, tailored bottoms and skirts, silk and maybe even a leather jacket. Prodigal Daughter is available at Amelie in Claremont. Location: 132 North Yale Avenue, Claremont (909) 624-5651

whole body to cap in internal moisture and not just your face. Do this as soon as you get out of the shower when your skin is damp. Spritz with a hydrating toner throughout the day. Look for ingredients like phospholipids, evening primrose oil, avocado oil, shea butter, and silicone as they are nourishing and help to mend the skins barrier to prevent dehydration and dry skin. ieStyle Mag: Can you talk in depth about 14-zone Face Mapping skin analysis? What is it exactly?

The Inland Empire is known for its dry climate and oftentimes-harsh water conditions and pollution pockets. So how do we deal with that and how does it translate to skincare? The answers are here. Annet King, Director of Global Education for skincare favorite, Dermalogica, and curriculum writer for the International Dermal Institute sat down with ieStyle Magazine to give us the lowdown on Dermalogica’s signature FaceMapping™ and how to achieve a perfect glow despite the less than perfect conditions. ieStyle Mag: What skin care recommendations can you provide for women who live inland and are exposed to harsh climates and hard water? The skin is likely to be much drier and dehydrated. Add a moisture serum or booster under your moisturizer. You may prefer a creamy, milky, cleanser to a foaming cleanser if your skin is dry. Moisturize your 74 ieStyle April/May 2010

Chinese Facial Diagnosis has been around for thousands of years. It’s the ancient science and art of associating the areas of the face with internal organs, and with the specific emotions that these organs represent. According to this system, activity of the skin in these facial zones reflects the condition and activity within the body and entire being. For example, did you know that broken capillaries across the cheeks might indicate lung stress; dark circles can be a sign of poor kidney function, and breakouts on the side of the chin can point to ovarian activity? This classical technique is just one of the diagnostic tools used in Dermalogica’s signature 14zone skin analysis called Face Mapping™. It takes only a few minutes, is painless, does not require disrobing, and it’s offered to customers at no charge by Dermalogica-trained skin therapists as the first step in learning about your skin and getting it back on track. Consumers can learn more about their zones by visiting Dermologica.com to take an online Speed Mapping skin analysis and find the nearest Dermalogica skin treatment center or salon.

ieStyle Mag: How do you maintain a healthy glow despite smog and pollution? Proper cleansing! Start with an oil based, water-soluble, cleanser to dissolve sebum, makeup and dirt (oil dissolves oil). Follow with your normal cleanser and spend at least 30 seconds cleansing your skin. Do this twice a day - morning and night! Use an exfoliant daily to brighten and remove dead cells. Look for a gentle powder with rice bran and phytic acid or a leave-on liquid that resurfaces the skin. Wipe over your face before your moisturizer. ieStyle Mag: How important is diet and exercise to foster a youthful look? What are some foods or methods you subscribe to, if any? Very important; the skin is a mirror of what goes on in the body and shows everything, our stress, our diet, our general health, etc. A diet that’s rich in healthy, unprocessed foods, packed with antioxidants (blueberries, pomegranates, grapes seed), healthy fats (nut and fish oils), minerals and vitamins (green veggies and fruit), will help you regenerate and protect your skin from reactive oxygen species (free radicals from pollution, sun, smoking, bad diet and stress). Exercise boosts circulation, drains lymph nodes and reduces stress, which all helps the skin. ieStyle Mag: What are your “can’t leave home without” Dermalogica products? PreCleanse, Daily Microfoliant, C-12, Dynamic Skin Recovery (AM) and Power Rich (PM).

Jaded Dynasty Photography by: Zim Killgore

ieGem Rebecca Ybarra takes over the fashion scene one tutu at a time.

D

on’t get confused, this isn’t a fantasy driven comic strip or video game, but a fantasy driven clothing line. It’s time to get well acquainted with Jaded by Rebecca Ybarra. The Rancho Cucamonga based designer who has successfully gone from 80’s loving tutu creator and children’s designer to hip hop feature favorite in less than a year, gets noted for her homage to ballet-inspired frocks and her less-than-conservative use of color. Rebecca has dubbed the line, “high fashion fun”- a collective mix of avant-garde, punk, feminine, street, couture, funk, creativity, alternative, and fashion forward, while others have simply marked it a “must.” After the line debuted in June 2008, the requests flooded in. Celebrity journalist, Necole Kane, proudly showed off a black strapless and white tulle number from the Pretty in Punk collection at the 2009 BET Awards, proving the power of the poof. So, between creating new silhouettes and biding her time between wife and mother

(of a tutu loving little girl named, Sky), Rebecca is rubbing elbows, with hip-hop heavies like Kelis--who’ll wear Jaded in her upcoming album shoot, and T-Pain and Young Jeezy, who’ve requested that their dime-piece video diva be decked in nothing but Jaded. Busy much? Naturally. This selfmotivated business woman doesn’t just give her love to the threads, but heads up a non-profit organization with her sister (Christy Grammer, owner of Suite 106 Cupcakery), Jordan’s Heart. The organization was developed after an unfortunate car accident during Rebecca’s pregnancy. Her son, Jordan, who fought in the neonatal intensive care unit, became an inspiration and the driving force to fuel an organization that supports new parents who have babies in the NICU. Four years later, Rebecca celebrates his life through fashion as she’s teamed up with Mary Cruz, jewelry designer for MC2. The two talk of a fashion event supporting Jordan’s Heart. This local darling is making waves; hope you can keep up.

Suite Success

by Candace S. Abbott

ieStyle Magazine scores an invite to one of WeHo’s most gabbed about events and we’re dishing on who was there, who got what, and why it’s hot!

P

re-Oscar season and pre-Valentine’s Day, ieStyle Magazine had a chance to check out one of the most acclaimed, star-studded gifting suites in Tinsletown. Last February, West Hollywood’s famed Café La Bohème, went from romantic dining nook to romance driven lap of luxury for The Second Annual Valentine Romance ‘Sneak Peek’ Oscar Suite. The exclusive soirée was a chance for famous faces to turn out and sample 5-star cuisine from Café La Bohème’s acclaimed chef, Christine Banta. Christine, no doubt, wowed palates with a decadent spread of brioche lobster rolls, wild mushroom tartlets, andouille sausage rolls, miso glazed salmon, and sliced beef tenderloin. For dessert, luscious butterscotch pudding parfaits, crème brûlée and super sweet petit fours. It was a chance to scoop up some serious swag. According to the show’s producer, Doris Bergman, this is the gifting suite that always morphs into one big party! 78 ieStyle April/May 2010

And a party it was, as the dimly lit room bustled with celebrities like “CSI: Miami” alumna, Sofia Milos, “The Mentalist” star, Amanda Righetti, and “Heroes” and “True Blood” temptress, Dawn Olivieri. They scored luxe gifts from Menbur (ultra-snazzy clutches and heels hailing from Spain), cozy full-length bathrobes from The Original FreeBeneath (plan to wear nothing underneath), “Face in a Case” make-up by renowned artist Dimitri James of SKINN Cosmetics, all-purpose and colorful suitcases from Coleman, jaw-dropping

Red Carpet gowns designed by BG Haute Couture and SCALA Eveningwear and that’s just naming a few. Per Miss Morgan Fairchild, “The extravagance of the gifts, the beauty of the restaurant and the warmth of the people-this is unlike any other suite--this is a party!”

Not only were cell phones out for the super-chic Mobigrip—the only way to keep from dropping your Blackberry (ieStyle staff writers can attest to this), but the stars were tweeting about the caliber of the event. Gilles Marini said, “This is beautiful—amazing—I am tweeting right now and telling everyone about this event!” No doubt he was pleased. Perhaps he, like many of the other guests, scored a romantic get-a-way from Hotel Le Petit Ermitage in West Hollywood? From Dazzle Dry Quick Dry Nail System to gourmet caramelized pecans; there was no shortage of loot. ieStyle watched as silver-screen funny girl, Kim Whitley, got a one-on-one training session with Forbes Riley as she demonstrated her SpinGym (another “must” for any fitness conscious IE Diva). Laughter and good energy was filling the Tuscan-inspired restaurant, despite the winter downpour. Natural products were also a big hit for the fete.

Montclair native and creator of Herban® Body Care, Dana Sue, was in attendance with a sweet smelling, ultra-decadent but natural, body care line. Soaps, shea butter, and candles were just a snippet, we learned. While we got the skinny on Dana’s line, Live Life Organics was dishing on eco-friendly apparel—a favorite to some of the stars. Charlotte Ross, former “NYPD Blue” actress, scored a baby pink tank and “Days of Our Lives” star Diedre Hall, walked away with a cozy blue Henley.

Exotic spirits made their rounds in the space and lingerie was fingered and eyed with delight. Then bubbly blonde Bridget Marquardt (you know her from “Girls Next Door”) arrived. The sweet as candy star showed up in cozy Juicy Couture pants, comfy Uggs (after all, it was raining) and a knit hat, but showed off carefully curled locks and a bunny-esque smile. Bridget posed for photos and like many guests got gifted with CellCeuticals Skin Care and Jorg Gray® (official watch of the President and co-host of the event). The rain fell into the evening the day of the luxurious suite, but the stars were still shining bright. ieStyle April/May 2010 79

Cocoa Luxe

By Candace S. Abbott

Early morning workouts and late night chocolate cravings aren’t the ideal combination for keeping your new svelte physique. You’re just a month shy of bikini season, but you still need a cocoa fix. Whip up some guilt-free brownies and sip on chocolate goodness without sabotaging your diet. In the Box Thinking: Diet Coke Brownies Ingredients: w 1 box of brownie mix (ieStyle recommends Trader Joe’s Truffle Brownie Mix) w 1 can of Diet Coke (12 oz) w ¼ cup of egg whites (optional) Directions: w w w w

Pre-heat the oven to 350*F Combine brownie mix, Diet Coke, and optional egg whites Fill ¾ glass bakeware Bake for 20-22 minutes

Out of the Box Thinking: Iced Dark Chocolate from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Sip on something rich and still fit into your mini-dress. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Iced Dark Chocolate is obscenely delicious and comes packed with benefits.

“courtesy of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf”

w Dark chocolate contains nearly 8 times the number of antioxidants found in strawberries w Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production, which gives a feeling of pleasure w Dark chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are stimulants (for that extra push at the gym) w Dark chocolate has been known to lower blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure w Dark chocolate has shown to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad one) by up to 10%
