Twenty-Two Q’s with Dr. O Plastic surgeon to the Stars and co-host of “The Doctors,” Dr. Andrew Ordon reshapes more than lady-parts. He’s reshaping thinking in a one-on-one with ieStyle.
D
octor Andrew Ordon, M.D., F.A.C.S., meets up with us on a rainy October afternoon in his cozy-meets-luxe Beverly Hills office to answer some plastic surgery FAQ’s. Speaking on everything from boobs to the boob-tube, Dr. O is candid, light-hearted and, no doubt, filled with knowledge. He speaks with a unique confidence that makes you want to ask, “Who is this guy?” He’s the guy who enhances your natural beauty. He’s the guy who’s known for his facelift. He’s the guy that everyone’s talking about. Whether they’re chatting about his captivating features or the big-name celebs that have passed through his doors, everyone wants to know more from Dr. Ordon. That could explain his spot as co-host on the CBS television series, “The Doctors,” where he dishes on plastic surgery daily. 30
ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
Dr. Ordon has been called “the governor of plastic surgery” and has spent over two decades receiving accolades as one of the most acclaimed aesthetic plastic and reconstructive surgeons. And when he’s not giving presentations, writing books, acting as Fellow with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery or lending his surgical knowledge to med-school textbooks, Dr. Ordon is deep in his newest non-profit project, Surgical Friends Foundation. Together they reach out to those suffering with physical deformities in the US and abroad, and seek to correct difficult and potentially life-threatening conditions. Listen up if you want to know what’s up... doctor’s orders.
Q: At what age would you recommend a woman start entertaining Botox, fillers, Juvéderm and the like?
Q: The ieStyle lady is interested in a number of things, but let’s first talk about preservation. What methods do you recommend to maintain a youthful look? A: There are so many things you can do without having to go under the knife, starting with Botox. There are facials, light therapy, and micro therapies. If a younger patient gets on top of the aging process early she can avoid having to get facelifts later in life. Q: What are the main factors that contribute to the less-than-fabulous aging process? A: There’s no getting around it, in the end, it’s your DNA. This is one of the biggest things that defines our age. Overexposure to the sun, smoking, diet, air quality, weight,
vitamins, sleep--all of these things affect the aging process as well. It’s primarily genetic, but we can’t change that. So, that’s why it’s important to develop a skin program that works for you early. Q: Any products in particular that you’d recommend? A: What works for some may not work for others. But whatever skincare you use, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Regardless of what expensive products proclaim, the skin is a natural barrier and doesn’t allow all of those molecules to penetrate. You have to experience a few products, then, see what feels good. Find a good cleanser, exfoliator, and a good moisturizer. It’s very important to moisturize.
A: When you start to see lines forming on your face. The best candidate is the woman who begins addressing the line early on, so it won’t get deep. You want to keep the situation at bay. But again, a portion of it is genetic. Some of my clients are in their 20’s, but most of them are in their 30’s and 40’s. Q: Do these procedures (fillers, Botox, etc.) eliminate the need for more invasive surgeries in the future? A: One who takes care of them self and their skin may never need an invasive procedure. But for those that do need a little more, we can do facelifts and eyelids. I do them for men without making them look feminine or without losing the character of the face. Less is better for a man. Q: How do you feel about the term, “aging gracefully?” Antiquated? A: I prefer to call it “controlled aging.” You want to feel good about yourself. From your hair to your teeth to your skin; when you’re feeling good about yourself, it comes across and that is what makes for a positive aging process.
ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010 31
Dr. Ordon
Q: Let’s talk about reversal procedures. What do you recommend for these older clients? A: For brown spots and red spots, I can do laser resurfacing. A lot of these older clients have sun damage as well; especially those living in the desert, so I’ll do laser resurfacing. We need to keep pushing skin maintenance. Gravity is, unfortunately, our enemy and we have to make peace with the enemy. Botox and fillers are a waste of time and money to clients already experiencing the effects of gravity. At that point we need to put things back in their place and then address maintenance. Once the jowls start to show up, you’re probably ready for a face or neck lift. We can do a complete facial by lifting and adding volume with the patient’s own fat and do some skin resurfacing as well. All of this can be done at the same time. And the patient is ready to be seen in about ten days. Facelifts are what I’m best known for. Q: Please give us ladies, the lowdown on stretch marks... Can we get rid of them? Are we stuck?
creams to lessen the effects, but once you stop the stretch marks come back. Q: There’s a lot of chatter about Dysport. Can you tell us about this? And is it better than Botox? A: I’ll call it some friendly competition for Botox. Botox has monopolized the market for a while now. The two are kind of like Coke and Pepsi. Dysport hurts less, you don’t need as much, and it lasts longer... so they say. But it hasn’t been out long enough to really tell. The two are probably comparable. The most important thing, no matter which you opt for, is who is the person injecting you. Be careful who you go to. You must see that a trained specialist is doing your injection all the time. Q: Breast augmentations have become increasingly popular in recent years. What’s the average age of your client?
A: There are two categories—younger, in their early twenties, who didn’t really A: Stretch marks are micro tears or injuries caused to the dermis develop and those women by growing too quickly. There who are older and want really is no remedy to completely to reverse the effects of eliminate stretch marks. But if pregnancy. In my practice, you catch them early, when they I see both, but more of the are red or purple, laser therapy “mommy makeovers.” will help, so to make the final stretch mark slightly less visQ: Have you seen women ible. Although, with a tummy move back to silicone imtuck, we can cut out the worst plants or is saline still the part and put the skin under some tension, which helps to fill preference? Which do you prefer? Is there a new prodout the lose skin. You can use uct expected any time soon? 32 ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
A: I have seen a move back towards silicone. And yes, there is a new product expected to launch. It’s part silicone, part saline, so patients are getting the best of both worlds (clinical trials are currently underway). I’m a fan of silicone, myself. I’ve always liked it because it is cohesive, more like a Jell-O bag as opposed to saline, which is similar to a water balloon. Silicone is also designed to decrease ripples. Q: Liposuction vs. Liposculpture A: Liposculpture is the evolution of liposuction. In the 1980’s, our instruments were more crude. Now, we’re using much finer instruments, have controlled technologies, and refined techniques, like Vaser or laser assisted technologies. Q: Any new procedures that combat cellulite? Velashape? A: Like stretch marks, there is no permanent fix for cellulite. These sorts of treatments, like Velashape, make temporary improvements and they are quite costly. For cellulite, the best treatment is water, green vegetables, and exercise. A lot of stimulant treatments provide a temporary fix, but once you stop treatments, cellulite comes back.
Dr. Ordon
Q: What’s your favorite procedure to perform and why? A: The facelift. That’s what I’m known for. Q: What’s the procedure that people seem to take lightly? And why? A: People seem to take all of plastic surgery lightly, probably because it is elective surgery. But you must know everything going into it. You want a board certified doctor performing your procedure and you want it in a safe, accredited surgical center. Q: Everywhere you turn, or tune to on your radio, there are ads pushing affordable surgeries from certified cosmetic surgeons & plastic surgeons; But can you tell us the difference between plastic & cosmetic? A: “Plastic” is a broader term that encompasses reconstructive, meaning everything from burns to clefts to fractures. “Cosmetic,” is just one part. We’re trained in all of it. Q: What changes have you seen in your career, in terms of techniques, technology, and trends? A: The biggest advance that I’m seeing, are face transplants. When I was in my training we were using tissue from the abdomen to reconstruct a breast, but
now the possibilities are almost endless. Bio-engineers are working out the kinks with rejection, but they are doing things like creating new parts from stem cells. They are working on taking someone else’s face and transplanting it to another person. Of course, the downside is that you could be on autoimmune support drugs indefinitely. But I didn’t think I’d see what I’m seeing in my lifetime.
Q: You have such an impressive background! Did you always know you wanted to become a plastic surgeon? A: Usually in med school, you make your decision of your career path. I knew I wanted to be a surgeon early on and I enjoyed plastic surgery the most. It was important to decide early because of the competition for a residency. Q: What’s the greatest delight you get from your work? A: Making people happy. When it’s obvious that I’ve improved the quality of their life.
That’s a very positive thing. The smallest treatment, maybe just some Botox, can impact in the biggest way. And I still get a lot of reward from reconstructive procedures, as well. Q: How do you feel about the portrayal of plastic surgeons and the world of plastic surgery in the media (i.e. Nip/Tuck and Dr. 90210)? A: I am a fan of Nip/Tuck, definitely. But the public has a fascination with plastic surgery. It’s almost god-like in the changes that can come from it. It’s taken to such an extreme on these shows. It’s not reality. The profession is definitely glamorized and made more dramatic, whereas in reality, it’s more nuts and bolts. But in a way, we do try to shine. This is my talent and people want to see me perform--surgeries. Q: How do you enjoy taping “The Doctors?” A: I love it! It’s a new job and I’m new to television. But this is a great learning experience and I’m able to translate my passion to the television. We actually tape six shows in two days. It’s a challenge and I have a lot of homework to do, in terms of prepping for the episodes. Q: What are the words you live by? A: As a doctor practicing medicine, I try to treat people the way I’d want to be treated. I don’t make light of issues or questions. I don’t cut corners. I put myself in my patient’s shoes. ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010 33

shop girl:
Does Claremont
It’s a town that seems plucked right out of a storybook. Along the main drag, Indian Hill Road, the treetops kiss as if to create a charming archway and the delicate leaves dance to the ground--nature’s way of welcoming visitors and residents. This little town of which we speak is Claremont. At times, this magical town doesn’t seem to fit into the Inland Empire equation. Those quintessential super-stores, beloved shopping complexes and ever-present Starbucks on every corner are absent. Claremont assumes the title as the Inland Empire’s precious little anomaly. ieStyle writer, Candace Abbott, spent a day scoping out the scene and taking note of the off-the-beaten-path spots that are an absolute must when bulking up your winter wardrobe (think, unique pieces that you won’t find in any shopping mall). She also gives you the lowdown on where to snack and stock up on the little things that always make you smile when perusing through the most captivating of places.
a no-brainer for any girl who craves effortlessly stylish pieces,a cozy backdrop and some of the most unique fashion finds this side of Interstate 10. Amelie is what boutique shopping was meant to be--a carefully curated collection sitting pretty on dark wooden hangers, sweet tunes spilling out of the speakers, fragrant Tocca candles flickering and waist-high tables littered with items like curve hugging denim by J. Brand, soft tees, Tolani scarves and buttery leather bags. I was overjoyed to see some of my favorite designs irst stop, Amelie on display. Civil Smith anyone? I spotted the Parlor shirt and Railroad dress; it was instant love. Methinks the boutique is onto something as they appropriately placed items side-by-side to showcase the potential of each piece. I sifted through the coordinated racks to find glam offerings from Wish and lust-worthy bits from Goddis Linsey.
I also couldn’t take my eyes off of a drop-back, long-sleeved silk frock from Tea & Honey and signature pocketed numbers from Prodigal Daughter (the doings of local designer, Joni Fraser). Prodigal Daughter’s boyfriend dress is a staple and great with leggings, jeans or tights.
When I wasn’t mesmerized by the wears, my eyes were fixed on odds and ends by Pyrrah. Think gift or think for yourself these 19th Century wax seals turned into silver or gold necklaces and rings are a great addition to any jewelry box. The best part? You can customize them.
After a pleasant chat with Jenny of Amelie it was off to explore more of the Claremont Village. So, I headed over to Bath Junkie (175 N. Indian Hill Blvd, Suite 100a, 909.625.3417)
T
o score a few luxury items. I’d visited specialty bath shops in the past, but none so special as this. If I was in the mood to pick up some customized lotions and potions, this was the only place to be. I was particularly interested in gardenia scented bath products. Not a problem in these parts, where I could not only have bath products, but gardenia scented cleaning and pooch products.
The Bath Junkie guru, Hailey, informed me that there were 199 other scents to pick from at the “scent station” including categories like Florals, Citrus, Botanicals and Wannabes. The brightly lit space, with its soft wooden floors and pastel hued walls, also proved helpful in the bath accoutrements depot--shower-caps (adorned with giant bows), baby soft bathrobes, and hair towels were among the assortment.
I stood in the store thinking, what better gift to give to my girls than paraben-free, glitter filled scrubs, conditioners and shower gels; or better yet, personalized fortune cookie soaps. An array of colors and concocted smells were available to start but within two weeks, these things would arrive bearing my very own message of good fortune. After an on-site hand scrub and some aromatherapy pouches, I left a converted Junkie thinking this is the perfect place for a party. Good thing, Bath Junkie plays host to that sort of thing. Just BYOC (Bring Your Own Champs).

The thought of giving a party got me in the mood for some personalized stationary. Where to go? CLOUD Nine (175 N. Indian Hill Blvd, Suite B101a, 909.624.3147)
Of course! The brainchild of owners Joanne Monroe (who crafted invites out of her home for fifteen years) and Dina Prentiss (a veteran event planner), this little stationary shoppe is packed from ceiling to floor with goodies. It’s a place where oddities rest on mirrored desks and plums sit with authority in large containers. Being an avid connoisseur of stationary, pens, stamps, and all the trimmings, I was in a bit of a fantasyland.

ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
The owners were sweet to strike up a conversation with me, while in the midst of a paper project. After learning that the two (who’d worked collaboratively for a while) finally meshed their passions or what they affectionately call, “a marriage of ink and paper”, I was impressed. From custom invites to social stationary,
personalized stamps to quirky wedding cards and etiquette books, CLOUD Nine proved to have everything for the craft goddess within and a little something extra as the ladies revealed the launch of their full-service, event coordination leg, Silver Lining. Bliss, indeed.
Joanne tell of their bond with their customers and what fun it is to be a part of their special day or event. My gaze was then fixed to the prophetic saying on the wall by Priscilla Young Pratt, “Great symphonies begin with just one note.”
A
ll of the shopping and learning left me starving, so it was only right to stop in for a coffee and tartine at Le Pain Quotidien (175 N. Indian Hill Blvd, 909.625.1609), a rustic French cafe. Emitting the spirit of the old world, the wood laden locale was warm and the scents of the pastries were intoxicating. Delicious almond & chocolate croissants, Belgian sugar waffles, lemon tarts and their signature brownies took hold of me. And the chocolate chip cookies were piled high. All the makings of a sweet ending, right? Well, I opted for the cafe’s most popular tartine, Chicken Curry Salad, with a side of harissa-cranberry chutney. Très magnifique!

Accessories are a must. No visit to Claremont is complete without a visit to Amor Femina (101 N. Indian Hill Blvd, Suite C1-106, 909.399.5898), where Cettu handbags fill the cases (in colors you crave). I had my eye on a dusty silver number, but was then entranced by an orange carryall. Couldn’t I just have it all? Above the handbag case was a photo of Audrey herself as Holly Golightly, classic, peering into the window at Tiffany’s with her tiara, black shades, cigarette holder and simple black dress. It’s best to consider Amor Femina just that, the Tiffany’s of Indian Hill Drive. The decadence was confirmed once I caught sight of the Freelook Watches. No doubt I was taken back by the collection of jewelry (Swarovski bracelets, rings crafted of vintage buttons, brightly hued clutches and bejeweled magnifiers), but it was the Freelook Watch (hailing from Paris) that won me over. Freelook is where luxe meets “I like the price.” Before me was a glittering set of large-face timepieces. My choice, black ceramic, outfitted with a tasteful (and affordable) amount of bling (Swarovski, naturally).

Finally, I popped into Isabella Dee (101 N. Indian Hill Blvd, Suite C1104b, 909.624.3907) and what an ideal way to conclude my shopping trip. Mint colored walls and industrial concrete flooring coupled with fem details like fleur de lis covered fitting rooms, luscious curtains and an intricately designed aluminum ceiling put me over the edge as did the clothing. The onpoint style spot is the doing of Vanessa Sharp, formerly of Forever 21 and Trina Turk where she showed her talents as an assistant designer. Vanessa knows fashion and I knew that instantly as she’s filled her calming space with lazy day favorite Twisted Heart along with tees by Mynx. It’s a beautiful display of perfect party duds from Sky and wardrobe staples: Paige Denim,
Sanctuary, True Religion, Nu and Pathway (to name a few). I chatted with Vanessa for a bit and learned that Isabella Dee got its start online, but the need for beloved clothing in the area left an opening for a boutique such as this. And thank goodness for that. Chandeliers shone overhead as I took inventory of the enticing tables throughout. Fun accessories and blinged out baby gear were also on hand. As with any noteworthy boutique, sweet smelling candles burned so to set that exclusive mood. I was taken over by the comfort of Isabella Dee and gave in, leaving with a vintage cut Local Celebrity tee shirt displaying the word, “Love.” Perhaps, the best way to describe a day of shopping the Claremont row.AA

Winter
Wonderland Doing Lake Arrowhead... the right way By Candace Abbott
Patron and gummi bears. The coup de’état in this wonderful room--cozy waffle bathrobes. You might not want to leave your suite, but when you know there’s a spa situation not far off, you’ll suit up and head down.
Snow-capped Mountains, lacing up your boots, and hitting the slopes are ruling your thoughts. The chill factor is at a high and you’re ready to strut your stuff in your newest snow bunny duds. The ideal place for the lady who seeks luxury along side her hot toddy? Lake Arrowhead. Up interstate 215 and around the vertiginous mountain sits the sweet little town (marked by a bustling town square). It’s an absolute nature-fest for any girl who gets her kicks by breathing in fresh air and letting the chill hit her brow. So, you’ve convinced your girls that a “bunny trip” is in order. It might be nice to rent a cabin, but where would you steam? Where would you get a “scent-sational” salt glow? How would you sip local varietals and stargaze? Problem solved. The only place to slumber (and play) is Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa--a warm and luxe locale that’s humbly tucked behind the pines trees. A few years back, the one-time Hilton underwent an extensive renovation and rolled out the red carpet for Arrowhead visitors. What’s the spot really like? Unload the BMW and stroll into a lodge gone lavish lobby. A beautiful combination of wood, rustic details and modish elements make up the space. And when you check into your digs (that just might overlook the private lake), you’ll see these same elements repeat themselves, accompanied by an ultra-suede duvet on your bed topped with super soft sheets, marble-topped furniture, a flat screen, roaring fireplace, and mini bar with all of the big players--Voss, Grey Goose, 64

No doubt you should relax on the property. Shimmy down to the spa and start with a steam. On hand are peppermint towels to cool you off and help you Zen out. With each room named after a plant indigenous to the area, you’ll surely feel in a natural state. Each of the treatment rooms features these supersavvy blankets that you’ll wish adorned your own living room. Maybe you and your bud (or beau) want to share a treatment room. That’s where the Journey Suite comes in. Complete with a patio off the room (which, of course) overlooks the lake. Get a pretty, dewy look thanks to a Microdermabrasion facial done with True products, naturally.
If it’s some exercise you seek, (to work off all of those delicious sweets you consumed at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and The Belgian Waffle Works), then go to the fitness center located in the spa and sign up for some butt busting classes. Salsa dancing? Yoga? Pilates anyone? It’s all there along with some inspirational words on the walls. When you leave, don’t forget to score a pair of fuzzy, pink flip-flops!
Leroy’s is a well-known name around Lake Arrowhead and it’s chock-full of gear, accessories, and even boards. Coach is no stranger to the pine palace either. One of the largest outlet shops, Coach carries those styles that you wish you grabbed two weeks ago. Key chains, doggy collars, jackets, gloves and hats are just a snippet of the offerings. You’ve got your eye on a new set of luggage. Why not head home with luxe travel pieces and a sporty handbag? The final spot you’ll need to hit up before you go settle in with a glass of vino, Three Dog Bakery. Your pooch should know mommy’s thinking of her even when she’s more than 6,000 feet above sea level. Grab yummy and all natural treats for your furry prince or princess. Although puppy bagels and cookies will curb your critters appetite, the pup needs more than eats. Score a new collar and pretty, little bowl for your cutie. Shopping’s done.
A
fter your hard workout, you’ve either worked up an appetite for shopping or dining. Shop first. But where? The Lake Arrowhead Village. It’s a must when visiting those parts. But with all of the little spots you might not know what will delight? Easy. First stop, Triangle Boutique. They have all of your favorites on hand--Seven Jeans, Twisted Heart, C&C California, Joie and Juicy Couture. Scented candles, quirky books, hats, boots, Portico vintage soaps, and a wealth of unique jewelry (you’ll probably flip for the bangles) are also there to fill your shopping crave. Next up, stock up on your cold weather accessories at Leroy’s Boardshop How else do you plan to look like a pro in the powder? Volcom gloves… check! Tricked out Thirty Two Ladies Nova Board boots… check! Roxy hoodies… done! You’ll probably even walk out with a few extras, like super cute jammies from Lost.
Now it’s time to make your debut on the slopes. What to do about that? Head over to Snow Valley Ski Resort and give yourself kudos for booking a Lake Arrowhead winter package. There you’ll get the low down on how to approach the beautiful white blanket before you. Whether a novice or a newbie, Snow Valley is for you. There are a ton of things to do. From hanging in the lodge, late night skiing, cruising in snowmobiles and Terrain Parks, you won’t run out of options. And should you go “overboard,” rest up with a hot toddy at the Last Run Lounge before you go at it again. You and your girls are doing it up, but you’re not done. There’s ice-skating to be done at the Ice Castle International Training Center. Nothing says winter like a triple Lutz, or maybe just laughter and a few laps around the rink. Whatever the case, you’ll remember your childhood and partake in one of your favorite winter activities here. ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010 65

ll of the day’s excitement has left you hungry, no doubt. Head back to the resort (your little slice of heaven) and dine in style at the property restaurant, Bin189. The story behind the name? Wine ferments in bins… You’re off of highway 189. It’s a marriage of wine and location; you’ll love it. Sit down in the rustic style restaurant where birch outlines the bar, oversized antlers are chandeliers, and wing-backed chairs make up the space. Dine on the delights of a local chef who’s in to local ingredients. How does Mountain Meatloaf, sweet potato fries, or Portobello Caprese sound? The most impressive thing about the beautiful restaurant? Well, besides the fare, the patio, and the wine list, it would be the Magnum Room. A private room crafted of a glass wall showing some of the many bottles that come from the resort’s bottle cellar (think, over four thousand bottles). Lusciously light and over the top, this is the prime spot for you and your group. After dinner, go stargazing. Rumor is that Lake Arrowhead is one of the best spots in the world for stargazing. Say goodnight to the lake and good night to your girls. Wake up and do it all again. This is how you do Lake Arrowhead, with style. 66

s the feelings of Fall were settling upon the Inland Empire, ieStyle Magazine and Temecula favorite, Anela Apothecary teamed up to unveil a night of unforgettable kisses and overthe-top luxe. Now, the IE is no stranger to the traditional wine and cheese soirée, but this time, the red carpet was rolled out for some of the area’s very important people. Rose petals littered the floor as guests arrived to take in the spectacular scene of saucy bedroom vignettes done up by event diva, Eva Meloy, and stunning boudoir fashions. BabyDollz Lingerie models arrived decked out in ritzy little diddies from charming, pin updos to fluffy, marabou slippers.
Spunky girls rocked the runway in pretty pink ensembles, and tantalizing black and gold numbers; Accessorized in laced-up corsets, thigh-highs, garters, and even a come-hither floor length fur coat. But the runway fun wasn’t limited to bedroom treats. Even more fashion slaves hit the runway donning playful, seasonal duds from Tangerine, Ooh La La and Demi Things. The girls looked stunning in everything from slinky party frocks and animal prints to knee-high boots and furry jackets. As for partygoers, they showed up in style too; with stylish leggings, jewel-toned dresses and the season’s signature hue--black. And a feather-friendly bag kept making an appearance, thanks to Michelle Monroe. Surely it’s the next big thing on the handbag scene.
When you hear someone’s “gone Hollywood,” it’s safe to bet that glamour, indulgence and decadence are not too far behind. A once concrete space transformed. Laced with crisp white drapes and dipped in posh pink lighting with a DJ mix of familiar beats and bubbling (pink) cocktails; Rounds of delectable sweets, delicately procured goodie bags, beauty suites and a couple of celebrity guests are all sure giveaways that Tinsel Town swag is in the building. Enter the Kissable Couture launch event in the unsuspecting town of Temecula. 82 ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
W
hile guests were overheard laughing and singing iTunes wonder track, “Tardy for the Party,” a diamond-dripped feline took to the floor. The latest must in house-pets, Savannah Cats, made a cameo at the fete. The $20,000 exotic cat not only got kudos for her diamond diva style, courtesy of OZEL Jewelers of Redlands, but she also holds the title as the world’s largest domesticated cat. How’s that for cat power?
“What could follow such a posh pet?” is what resident smoochers were wondering. As they sipped their Nuvo cocktails, nibbled on Wahoo’s famous Baja Rolls and snacked on Truly Madly Sweetly gourmet “kissable cupcakes,” the ladies and gents quieted down for a dance interlude. A fascinating duo sashayed out. She, with a darling pixie cut & drop back costume covered in stones that played off the light and he, suited and slicked, shimmied to “Fergalicious” and embraced to “Prelude to a Kiss.”
As the event came to a close, guests lingered while shaking their groove things to a bevy of disco beats spun by Sterling Productions and flaunting their little black bags of Kissable Couture glosses, each having their turn on the step and repeat. Everyone wants to feel Hollywood, even if it’s for a night **kisses**.
Fashion, excitement, and luxe certainly held the floor at the event, but the guests of honor captivated once they arrived. These parts were finally introduced to Keisha Whitaker (entrepreneur, former model, trendsetter and wife of Forest), AJ Crimson (music video make-up guru who’s worked with Fergie and Estelle), and twelve luscious shades of Kissable Couture Lip Gloss. Keisha worked the room with her genuine smile and charming words. She arrived in a little black skirt, stirrup tights and of course, sky-high black platforms -- proving that the “less is more” look is right on these days. As for AJ, he wowed the crowed with his sparkling eyes and warming grin. Showing up in a laid back combo of jeans, sneakers, a blazer, and an oh-so-fitting pink shirt. Upon AJ & Keisha’s arrival, guests flocked to the VIP makeup corner, where AJ spoke freely about the gloss, educating ladies on which colors work and how to rock even the boldest hue, while Keisha indulged guests with photographs and one-on-one chats.

The minus5
The minus5 “story can be traced back to the end of the 19th century, when intrepid New Zealand explorer and adventurer Buck Rockwell, set out on a daring one-man expedition to circumnavigate the North Pole. 86 ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
When his icebreaker became trapped in the Arctic pack ice, he was forced to endure the winter in a remote whaling village with only the local fisherwomen and copious amounts of vodka to warm the long Arctic nights. In 1908, Buck finally returned to New Zealand, bringing with him the story of his polar adventures and a taste for pure, ice cold vodka. His legacy has been passed through generations of Rockwells ever since. In 2003, his great-grandson, Craig Ling hit upon the idea of creating the world’s very first sub-zero vodka bar. The rest as they say is history.
An Experience that will chill you to your bones! Created in
New Zealand, minus5 is an ice lounge where you can touch, feel, and explore handcrafted ice sculptures and ice architecture made from 100% pure Canadian ice. Named for its constant frosty temperature of minus five degrees (twenty-seven degrees Fahrenheit), thousands have flocked to experience this unique concept.
Everything’s made of ice!
Everything inside minus5 is made of ice; the walls, the bar, the sculptures, the seats and even the glasses that you enjoy our famous vodka-based cocktails in. Our focus at minus5 is the art of ice. We have our own ice carver who changes the lounge and sculptures every 6-8 weeks, continually re-inventing the experience. Sculptures can reflect the season, location, wildlife, or even corporate logos and products for private functions. The possibilities are endless.
The minus5 Experience… The minus5 ice guides
are specially trained to the highest level to ensure that your visit to the Ice Lounge is safe and thoroughly enjoyable. Once commencing the tour, guests are kitted out in Eskimo-like ice gear which includes insulated jackets, gloves and sheepskin-lined boots. Ready to brave the cold in sub-Antarctic conditions, guests move into two chambers for briefings before arriving into the Ice lounge. Once inside the lounge, visitors are greeted with an icy wonderland of intricately hand-crafted ice sculptures and furniture.

Guests remain inside for 30 minutes during which a photographer, skilled in the art of “capturing the moment,” roams the lounge. It is one thing to experience something so cool; however it is something else to showcase that experience to friends and family. Printed photos await guests as they complete their tour and guests are given the opportunity to purchase anything from a minus5 pen to an Eskimo hat. It’s a great trip for all the family, children have their own ski suits and we offer kids packs and mocktails (non-alcoholic drinks), and it’s a great occasion for a corporate function. No matter what the event, you and your companions will be treated to the coolest experience in town!
T h e e a g e r l y a w aited arrival of min us5 in America is here! minus5 opened its doors in Las Vegas on the 25th of September 2008 at Mandalay Place in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. osh your way to sweet success. Do as you’re told and eat cake (or any other circular baked good that lands before you). The roundness is a symbol of things “coming full circle.” But cakes and the like mean more then completion. In several cultures, nabbing a pastry with a trinket or coin within locks your luck for this New Year. For Mexico, it’s rosca de reyes, for Greece, it’s the round vasilopita cake that’s baked with a coin inside. Italy has the chiacchiere--honey drizzled pasta dough that’s fried and lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. As for an Eastern food that’s sure to offer up a twist of fate, don’t look to cookies with cryptic messages. Instead, set your sights on a Japanese tradition--a hearty meal of buckwheat or soba noodles. These lengthy additions signify longevity--just try not to break the noodles.

omething smells fishy. Well, that’s a good thing. Fish (cod specifically) has historically shown its ability to be transported without refrigeration, so it gets a “gold star” as it nods to the respected 92 ieStyle Jan/Feb 2010
element of preservation. And although known as a popular Mediterranean feast item, fish makes a lucky lady in many ways. Other sea-worthy items include sardines, which represent a good harvest, herring roe, which denotes fertility, shrimp, for long life, and carp, which gets recognized for its silvery scales that symbolize that of money and fortune--these scales end up in wallets to increase the chances. Those in Scandinavian countries prefer to boil the cod, the Italians salt it and the Polish opt for pickled herring. ver been called a “porker?” Next time, try not to get so upset. Pork is highly associated with progress; something everyone likes to see. Also, the pig is an animal known for moving forward and, of
course, rooting itself to the ground before doing so. What’s more to love about the fatty beast is… the fat, which is symbolic of fattening wallets. Especially in Italy where pig trotters with lentils or zampone is a traditional celebratory dish. Pork also gets play in other places ‘round the world like Ireland, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, and Hungary where it’s all about a tasty roast suckling pig. Want prosperity and wealth? You better start pigging out. entils. You don’t think about them often. That’s fine. But consuming a bowl of the high-fiber, high-iron,
symbolic beans could do you some good in 2010. These yummy little things (that fall under the legumes category along with beans and peas) mean money. Yes, cold hard cash. In the Italian tradition, consuming cotechino con lenticchie or sausages and green lentils, is a sure way to lay ground for a fat bank account in the months to come. Lentils equal dollars, pork equals abundance, and the outcome is nothing but success. Not to mention this dish is tasty beyond words. Want to go Brazilian?
